I’ve been thinking about improv comedy lately, per a few discussions I’ve had on discord and twitter.

I want to give a hearty rec for Paul F Tompkin’s show The Dead Author’s Podcast. PF Tompkins plays HG Wells who hops into his time machine and interview the dead authors of interest.

There's 66 episodes total, including an ep that features Dr. Seuss and another Shel Silverstein. Maya Angelou. Christopher Marlowe. Each author is played by one of the comedians from the Upright Citizens Brigade and I’m always howling with laughter at something or other during an episode.

It’s such a fun kind of improv comedy, running amok with historical details and other silly things. One of my favorite episodes is the Gospel writers which had me in stitches. The Ayn Rand episode had me weeping with laughter and sobbing in nihilism.

I was looking back at their archive and it turns out there's a few episodes I'd missed over the years so I'll be picking my way through these again. It's such a fun ride.

Pretty sure they have their episodes up on Spotify, Stitcher and Apple and all the other usual podcast places. The Dead Author’s Podcast is their official page (not mobile friendly, the banners have broken the page).

It seems like Jon would’ve had his hands pretty full when he was running around in the tunnels with a flashlight in one hand and a tape recorder in the other, I think it would’ve been fun if he just got some light up sketchers so they could just light his way as he walked so he wouldn’t even need a flashlight.

This dose pose two major challenges though, number one, Tim is not gonna leave Jon alone about them lol (as is his right), and number two (my personal favourite) at the end of season two when Jon is trying to out run the NotSasha! It would be pretty hard for him to hide if the NotThem! Could just follow the flashing light coming from his shoes. I think that it would be hilarious, just picture that deranged sweaty little guy sprinting away from a monster, trying to outrun it through these confusing tunnels but the monster knows where he’s going because his sketchers keep lighting up, so then Jon’s trying to outrun the creature and take his shoes off at the same time, hopping down the tunnels on one foot as he tries to pull the shoe off, once it’s off he immediately chucks it at the NotThem! To try and slow them down. It amazes me how easily this horror podcast could have been a comedy, they were really walking that thin thin line.

🗨️ Seokjin’s childhood/school was just, ugh, I really felt heartache for thirteen year old Seokjin 🥹 So very common as a kid, to wish you’re older – and then it’s just not what he expected at all. I really loved it! There were a few times I was laughing so damn hard, times where I was shedding a few tears as well. Just, incredibly good; very well written, the story was captivating and motivating, just yeah, brilliant. (Sorry, I’m suddenly bad with words). I loved the ‘lessons’ he learned, and then having the luxury (I’m using that word because we don’t have that irl) of going back to his childhood (almost like starting over) and damn it was good 👏💯

Yoongi

It has A LOT of angst and at times it’s just sad reading how each character falls apart 😭 it’s amazing! If you’re into stories that will have you question your own morals and who to root for, this is for you 💖

📝 Yoongi fell in love with you. A girl he had never even met before. Knew everything that you were made up of within 96 pages of a worn red journal with a nirvana sticker on front, with coffee and tea-stained pages that also smelled of lilacs and summer.

🗨️ I can already tell that this story will be amazing; it’s so sweet, cute and tender. The storyline/idea is really cute and fluffy, like who wouldn’t love that?? 😭 And as someone who wrote countless journals as a teen, this one just hits differently. It’s so cute and the concept is gold 💜 I really, really look forward to reading the next chapters and what Yoongi will uncover of OC through her journal. And if he can return it to her sometime and they meet! 🥹

📝 Making hating Christmas your entire personality was never the plan. Then again, it seems bad things only ever happen around Christmas - like discovering your fiancé cheating on you, forcing you to move back to your sleepy hometown. 🗨️ I just love me some good enemies to lovers AU 🥵 the relationship between OC and tae is really good, I think the tension between them was well built 👏🏾 I loved how their relationship unfolded and grew through their fake dating 🥹 the way OC realized she had feelings for him, but he had showed her before in his subtle moves, how much more he relaxed in her presence. I loved the interaction between oc and tae’s parents too, the way that they could obviously tell that OC was head over heels 😂 ah just, It was really really good! It was funny, it was comforting, and such a lovely read around Christmas! Nothing this month 😞 — I AM SO SORRY that I haven’t read any with JK this month (though he is featuring in some with the other members). My JK ‘to read’ list is the LONGEST imao 😂 I’ll hopefully do better next month – but you can always check my Jungkook Library 💜

I have spend most of December being on holiday/time off, which gave me a lot of time to write my own stuff, which in the end gave me less time to read 😣 But it’s all good! I loved getting some stories and thoughts out of my head and now there’s space to read and obsess over other’s stories again 😀

When I’m playing genshin, I’m mostly listening to either Paternity Court, or Steve Wilkos. Imagine the characters hearing all of the stuff and being so scandalized by the results and comments. Or being genuinely disgusted and heartbroken for the victims in more serious cases. I can def see a good chunk of them being invested

I don’t think I’ve listened to those yet! I do occasionally get on a true crime binge listen, however the weirdest thing my characters have heard has gotta be Game Grumps episodes or compilations lol

What if i listened to every season of Buzzfeed Unsolved.

What would we do then my Genshin characters, my people, what then.

I saw someone else write about this true crime documentary thing but they described everyone being pretty terrified or disgusted by the podcasts

Which I definitely think some would be literally horrified lmao

But also I think a lot of them definitely would be invested-

I mean shit,

you're listening to your God and they just start playing this like uncomfortably detailed intricate crime case/murder report???

I would be so interested in what kind of person they were, and why they were listening to true crime stuff,

so needless to say characters like Heizou and Yelan would definitely be into it, maybe Kujou Sara as well?

I can see Zhongli getting into it too and Raiden

I mean don't get me wrong plenty would be disturbed

like rest in peace Barbara 🙏

but like it would be fascinating to them too!!

cuz they don't know anything about our world so they could learn a lot about it thru listening to this stuff

esp if ur like me and u just turn on a cool Spotify playlist while u play sometimes, like they've probably never heard so many radically different genres songs, and so many back to back

(could definitely see a myth about u having an immortal inexhaustible musician band that has access to all the songs of the universe that u make them play for you, once again, would be hard to deny bc that's a pretty accurate description of spotify lol)

Apparently now he co-hosts a podcast with a novelist who writes books described as an "offensive, in-your-face, brutally honest and completely hilarious look at male inner life and sexual fantasy" & an AI co-host, which. That may be genuinely the worst podcast in history. Looks like once they made their AI pretend to be Alex Jones so yeah. I think it's time to call this podcasting experiment over, wrap it up boys (and I mean boys)

Giorno is the type to base his YouTube content around music, focusing on the history behind certain artists while also aiming to introduce people to more obscure musicians. He has an entire ten-part series on Jeff Beck alone. It comes across a tad bit elitist, but he’s quick to grow a following due to his reliable information and passionate delivery.

While not one to upload consistently, Abbacchio talks about true crime on his channel. He used to do conspiracy theories at times too, but eventually pulled back on doing so. His videos are never under an hour long at the very least. After finally releasing a video (usually occurs around once a month), the comment section is full of people expressing excitement to see him on their feed. Definitely makes content that people enjoy falling asleep to.

Fugo himself occasionally dips his toe into true crime content. However, his focus is mainly informing people on subjects including history, media literacy, and even philosophy at times. He has a series dedicated to giving as much information on a specific topic in the smallest amount of time possible. Outside of those select videos, they’re all usually hours long. College students especially consider him a lifesaver.

Mista and Narancia both host a podcast where they upload episodes on YouTube, as well as other platforms. It’s comedy oriented and subject matter varies a lot. They could be discussing a book Mista read one week, and how Narancia’s a terrible cook the next. The appeal largely stems from their chemistry together, their audience finding them absolutely hilarious and often saying that they could listen to them ramble for hours on end.

Without a doubt, Trish’s makeup tutorials are both fun and informative- inspiring, even. Outside of that, she also reviews clothing brands and their latest releases. Trish is seemingly always on top of those reviews specifically, coming out with a video on the matter rather fast. At times, she makes videos giving tips on how to better take advantage of deals or coupons when shopping. Every now and then, she appears as a guest host on Mista and Narancia’s podcast.

Although a tad bit technologically inept and generally disinterested in content creation to even think of making anything himself, Bucciarati is always sure to support the others however he can. Across the board, he’s everyone’s number one fan. Similarly to Trish, Narancia and Mista have attempted to get him on their podcast. He always refuses.

So according to the interview:

- TK can't shut up about Taylor, even though she "hates" him flapping his mouth about their relationship. (I see some seeds being down.)

- Travis sells himself hard as a sweet, sensitive guy, but even his friends don't know the real him, and Taylor is still trying to figure it out. (I smell an escape strategy.)

- Scott Swift arranged all of this. Like we suspected.

- Travis was a celebrity in Kansas City and a complete nobody outside it, before the promance. Slice it any way you want - Taylor made him famous, is the message here. (Can we say C-L-O-U-T C-H-A-S-E-R? All together now, come on, kids! Spelling is fun!)

- Travis lacks direction and has no idea what to do when his football career expires. He's just throwing whatever at the wall to see what sticks. He needs money. He thinks about money a lot, while driving around town in his half a million dollar customized car. It's not at all obnoxious.

- Travis has no problem telling Taylor's security guards to step down so he can take charge and feel like the man . . . but he can't assert himself against a friend who talked smack about him on a podcast, or argue his worth to the employers who underpay him.

- He doesn't seem to understand Taylor's popularity, thinking a Hollywood reporter will need the concept of the Eras Tour explained to him. Huh? That's not being "a Swiftie" - that's proving how little attention he pays to her as an artist. It comes across like he only knows the most basic, surface level things about her career. 1989 was a smash hit, the Eras Tour is huge right now, Taylor is known for her emotionally-resonant break-up songs. Maybe his team wrote him out a little primer. Taylor 101.

- I did enjoy the comedy of Blank Space being his favorite song though. Someone somewhere is having fun with all of this.

- Everyone who falls into this man's orbit is struck by a sudden desire to write fanfiction about his relationship with Taylor Swift. It's uncanny. She's probably at his home right now! Tapping her toes impatiently while a home cooked apple pie cools on the window sill! Sure, Jan.

- Stalking Taylor's jet has gone mainstream, apparently. Major publications are just openly admitting they track it to guess where she is. So respectful. Let's just put this in a magazine for millions of readers and normalize it. Why the heck not? What could go wrong? No wonder she cut the wings off the damn jet five years ago

- Travis may be the most cornball of all Taylor's beards. "Wish on a star and you might manifest dating Taylor Swift into being!" I need someone to drag Karlie to the nearest observatory and get her wishing, stat 😂

The main takeaway: this was hilarious, and sure was illuminating 🤭
