Organization Tip
Manageable Chaos & Maintainable Entropy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a point when no matter how many times I organize and and declutter and deep clean my room, it would just go back to being messy. It was a cycle of perfectly organized and unbearably chaotic with no in-between. That's when I found this idea, borrowing some Physics concepts (for I am a Physicist, through and through)
The key is finding the balance between:
Maintainable entropy: No matter how neat and perfectly organized you set your desk/room up, it always gets a little messy in 2-3 days. When you use your space, when you work with your things, it is bound to get disordered. And that's your maintainable entropy (a.k.a measure of disorder). You don't have to keep your space perfectly organized, just maintain it at this level of entropy. It's unrealistic to live in a room and maintain it like nobody touches anything. So embrace the entropy!
Manageable chaos: This is the maximum level of 'mess' that you can work with. How messy can your room get before it affects your mood or productivity. This is often less than the level where you can't even sit/sleep in your room without nudging away things - that's beyond your workable level. That is your manageable chaos. So find that level and when you seem to cross it, organize your room immediately. If it's within your level, and you have time, organize; if you don't have time, just maintain at that level and organize as soon as you get time.
When you try to keep everything pristine and perfect, you get too tired. And that's when the mess builds up and chaos reigns!
Perfection is the enemy of done.
So if you maintain your room in the maintainable entropy level, and keep it under your manageable level of chaos - your room will be consistently organized and neat! 🌻

Taking a short break from trying to figure out my dynamic energy budget models and switching focus to hydrodynamic & particle tracking models!
Hopefully I'll use this to simulate mussel larvae moving around the Scottish West coast :)
Can't wait to get properly stuck in with model running and playing around with different climate scenarios ect!

it's time for one more big effort! I'm determined to get this all done now.
(and I'm in love with my vintage desk I bought second hand only last week; plus my gran's blanket is keeping me cosy. So I'm beginning to feel I'll be alright!)

I still feel exhausted and it's so hard to bring myself to do anything for work. There's a few things I should get done but I just can't. Luckily I have a week off. I'll have to work a few days but there'll also be time to relax.

23.04.2024 // some affect theory and writing on a fairly warm day. i'm taking it slow this week, mostly because i feel lazy and kind of...blah.
affect always escapes any attempt to explain or understand it because it lies outside of language or cognition. perhaps that explains why affect seems so vague and abstract. im trying to figure out if affect theory will be useful for my research but I won't pursue it if it continues to be beyond my grasp.

Incredibly Healthy Habits For Students
The most commonplace advice on good habits for students. This crucial component of a healthy relationship is not to be overlooked.
1. Don’t over-stuff your backpack.
Unless a professor tells the class to bring a textbook – keep that thing at home/in your dorm. Also, try not to carry too much with you anyway. At most I have a spiral or two, my computer. It’s not only unnecessary, but it’s heavy. It wears you down over time just adding stress and annoyance that you don’t need.
2. Work out every week.
Finding time to run a mile or two, play some basketball, or lift weights is important. It was a huge stress reliever for me and it also made me happier.
3. Stop Putting Things Off.
You know you should be finishing homework instead of going out every night. The crazy thing is, we ALL KNOW what we should be doing. But a lot of us still don’t get anything done. I’m in awe of the number of times I have put off studying or reading. However, every time I come to the simple conclusion that getting it done in the beginning is waaaaaay easier than trying to finish the task later.
4. Socialize.
Involvement in college is a spectrum. One extreme includes hobbits who stay in their dorm or apartment all day and the other includes social butterflies who are out on the town every night having fun with friends. Your goal is to find a happy medium. You don’t want to be closed off but you also want to interact with people every once in a while.
For me, this was the hardest part. I do not like to make acquaintances, but for myself I decided that it would be useful. I stepped out of my comfort zone.
5. Eat Healthier.
This is the most predictable advice I can give you. What you put in your body matters.
6. Drink more water.
Drinking water is one of the most essential healthy habits for students.
7. Know When To Say NO.
If you get your work done first, you will have time to have fun without any grief or regrets.
The most important relationship you make in your life is with yourself. It’s genuinely all a mind game. You have to learn to trust yourself by putting yourself first so that you can enjoy what life has to offer you. Having fun with this grey cloud of regret and worry about work you haven’t finished is just not fun at all. So have fun and be yourself but learn when to say NO. You’ll be forever grateful you did in the long run.
8. Give Yourself Grace.
One of the biggest downfalls for me was stressing out. Stressing over school work, time management, boys, networking, and the list goes on. It’s important to shut all the negative voices out.
There’s only one you so treat yourself with respect. If there are things you need to fix, make a plan and make it happen. If that fails, adjust the plan. No one is perfect and I wish we would collectively tell ourselves it’s going to be ok. Because it will be!

I sometimes catch myself thinking: maybe academia isn't for me after all? Maybe it's too tough and I too soft? Maybe the sort of passion I am capable of isn't enough? But then I remember that I will be the first person of my entire bloodline to earn a PhD and then, suddenly, it all seems worth it.

100 days of productivity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
starting 25th October 2023 ending 2nd February 2024
Rules
Success or failure -- just show up
No #ZeroDays -- No matter how hard it feels, do a little thing, a bare minimum. Don't let any day become a zero day
Do at least one PhD-related task everyday
Read a journal article everyday. Skim, AIC, full workout - anything
Weekends are excluded, but counted -- because rest is productive
Learn & practice mindfulness
Take two pictures everyday to represent the day (post them here)
Accountability
Daily update of task list here. Perfection is the enemy of done. So don't overthink, just post - even if it feels half-baked.
-----
I’m currently in the final quarter of my PhD. I feel quite demotivated and I find it hard to gain momentum. So I thought I'll take up an accountability challenge to help me stay motivated and eventually build a routine.
If you are already doing a 100 days of productivity challenge, or would like to take on one, please do comment/like this post. I'd love to have some company and inspiration! Please help me find similar accounts! <3

after every good week of research and being the bravest soldier, there comes the crash
I was still doing pretty well in the morning but then I came home and got completely discouraged by the useless stuff I had to do for one of my classes. the absolute basic level of knowledge I'm supposed to gather there is just annoying. that time would be better spent working on my actual thesis or even just going to the gym
so yeah. now I'm annoyed and frustrated and tomorrow I'll be bored at uni again. ugh. need to find something to go during the useless class
btw it was a tea king of a day, i chose some grape one that came from Czech Republic apparently ✨

Life and work are so so busy but I wanted to give at least a bit of an update!!
This second rotation of my PhD programme is so, radically better! My supervisor is amazing and I'm loving the science very much, it's really exciting and the rhythm of the work suits me so well! It's changed my whole attitude towards my PhD which is a huge relief. Things feel brighter. Meanwhile I'm settling into my city and starting to build up a social life, which was hard at first! So I guess if you're having a hard time making a new start - new job, new city, new degree - you can take this as a sign to take heart, because this came around the corner and took my by surprise. ❤️📖🌸🔬
