Organization Tip
Manageable Chaos & Maintainable Entropy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a point when no matter how many times I organize and and declutter and deep clean my room, it would just go back to being messy. It was a cycle of perfectly organized and unbearably chaotic with no in-between. That's when I found this idea, borrowing some Physics concepts (for I am a Physicist, through and through)
The key is finding the balance between:
Maintainable entropy: No matter how neat and perfectly organized you set your desk/room up, it always gets a little messy in 2-3 days. When you use your space, when you work with your things, it is bound to get disordered. And that's your maintainable entropy (a.k.a measure of disorder). You don't have to keep your space perfectly organized, just maintain it at this level of entropy. It's unrealistic to live in a room and maintain it like nobody touches anything. So embrace the entropy!
Manageable chaos: This is the maximum level of 'mess' that you can work with. How messy can your room get before it affects your mood or productivity. This is often less than the level where you can't even sit/sleep in your room without nudging away things - that's beyond your workable level. That is your manageable chaos. So find that level and when you seem to cross it, organize your room immediately. If it's within your level, and you have time, organize; if you don't have time, just maintain at that level and organize as soon as you get time.
When you try to keep everything pristine and perfect, you get too tired. And that's when the mess builds up and chaos reigns!
Perfection is the enemy of done.
So if you maintain your room in the maintainable entropy level, and keep it under your manageable level of chaos - your room will be consistently organized and neat! 🌻

19.10.2022. 🎧Exile -Taylor Swift (Ft. Bon Iver)
I barely slept 4 hours before I had to get ready for my shift. I'm volunteering at Basta, Kuwait, for the rest of the year and still adjusting to the timings. Their office is located in one of the most shady parts of town, on the rooftop of a run down multi story parking. But the interior is so freaking cool with its indie, arthouse vibes that I instantly fell in love with this space!

week four
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lilmh
wowww, folks. it’s week four already, i can’t believe it! things are picking up. i’m making routines and making friends. and, most importantly, being mindful of my goals.
(also the spelling error in the above pic is on purpose… it’s a joke hehe)
progress of fall 2022 semester goals:
• prioritizing mental health and and over-all wellbeing
i need to actually start going to counseling, just haven’t made that initial call, yet. that’s a must. i’ve been consistently moving my body… taking cycling classes has become a fun new part of my routine. also, i’ve been journaling lately which i’m loving. it is a great stress reliever for me. a way to organize my thoughts. or, go on a long random tangent. it’s definitely become a part of my morning routine.
• daily thesis dedication
this has been a hard one, ngl. i just have sooo much reading everyday that i have no energy to read more. i should make it a morning thing.
• make to-do lists
this has been sporadic, but i do use my planner daily. this week, I have planned out my day hour by hour. it’s okay if i don’t stick to it exactly, i just want to visualize how i spend my time. hopefully, this will make me less likely to procrastinate. we shall see.
• keep apartment tidy
it’s going well. one reason living alone sucks is because you have to clean up after yourself. dishes are like never ending. i’m making my bed every morning… it just looks so nice.
• participate it in class
i have been. at least once per class. slowly, but surely, my aversion to voicing my own opinion is lessening. kind of unexpected so soon. I had a moment today where i was speaking about catharsis as a possible benefit of participation in qualitative research. my mind cleared and i just spoke freely. i couldn’t believe it.
• make friends
i am!! so proud of myself! my cohort is sooo fun! and the 2nd year cohort has some very cool and smart peeps in it. i made a friend at the farmer’s market on sundays. our energies just flow together. very excited for the development of future friendships :)
• reading for fun is non-negotiable
your girl has been readinnnnnng. ngl, i ordered a bunch of adult fantasy romance books (and one academic romance) that i am very excited to dive into. and, i’m also simultaneously reading a non-fiction book about body image resilience and body positivity (thesis things). very good stuff.
accomplished today:
• reviewed the lab task i’m ta-ing
• started reading an article about a predictive framework for body image resilience
• finished thematic analysis textbook for qualitative methods class
• read for fun
• talked to a professor about making a meeting to discuss potential thesis ideas
• did an ab workout in the morning
i’m on my period, so feeling verrrry sleepy. slightly overwhelmed, but also happy with myself and how i’m doing so far. oooof, self-reflection is a form of catharsis. currently watching Netflix to decompress. listening to my body has been something i’ve been prioritizing.
in sum, it’s been fun.
:)
p.s. i really miss my doggy. my girl.

You do what works for you. PhD is all about finding that.
You don’t have to follow anyone else’s advice or some process/tool just because you see it working for someone else. You don’t have to follow any routines or systems just because everyone else in your field or department or your lab is following.
If something doesn't work for you, you need to accept it (tough task), see what works for you and what doesn’t.
Because, most of the time, it is the systems that you use that get in the way of your processes, and limit and inhibit your progress. It’s not about you being unable to work as much as your peers who use that system (imposter syndrome!). A system that could aid them may not aid you; it could pull you back.
That is why you need to find your own system. I guess PhD is all about finding your groove, exploring what works best for you and the best way you can do research. And not about following what’s told and going with the herd.
If you want to be an independent researcher, it is imperative to find your own style of working, create your own system.
Tumblr media
A lot of people find my planning system to be very meticulous and pretty elaborate. That got me thinking if I was "wasting my time" planning. So I tried to go for a week without much planning: I just made a mental note of the tasks I need to do in the week, didn't schedule them. Guess how the week went? So bad, I didn’t do anything and was guilty and anxious about the pent up work.
I realized I work best when I have everything laid out in front of me, with a smooth flow of tasks. My elaborate planning is what gets me there and keeps me sane ( and going). And I created this system over the course of one year, by trying and erring through so many advice, apps and people’s systems I read online.
So never beat yourself up if some well-proven, fool-proof system doesn’t work for you. Experiment with your time and working style, find your groove!

Falling in love with this yellow tree outside my office window even though I know it will be gone in a few short weeks.
I’m doing my best but I still have this constant itch of impending doom.

PhD Tips
Finding Motivation in Small Steps✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/100 days of productivity • 01-11-23, Wednesday
I wanted to share with you a realization that dawned upon me after weeks (6, to be exact) of being stuck and wallowing in the land of motivation. Let's talk about that rollercoaster ride called "PhD Motivation".
✨ Motivation: The Spark We all know that feeling when inspiration strikes, and we're fueled by an intense burst of motivation. It's like a spark, igniting the fire within us, and we're ready to conquer the academic world. But, here's the thing: that spark is fleeting, and it's not always around when you need it.
✨ Momentum: The Sustainer That's where momentum comes into play. Think of it as the gentle breeze that keeps your fire burning. It's that sense of progress, accomplishment, and consistency that pulls you through even on the toughest days. Momentum is what keeps you going long after the initial motivation has faded.
✨ The Secret Sauce: Small Tasks So, how do you harness this momentum magic? It's simple: start with small tasks. When the mountain of research, writing, and analysis seems overwhelming, break it down into manageable chunks. It's like eating an elephant—one bite at a time! Tell yourself to finish just one tiny task (like writing just 100 words in a manuscript or debug just one block of code), and then most certainly you'll continue the task.
✨ ✨ ✨ ✨

18.10.2022. 🎧Seven - Taylor Swift🎶
Waiting to pick up mom at the airport. I'm so glad she's back home and we can finally put an end to the awkward roomate situation my dad and I have been in for the past 3 months.
I realized halfway through this week how much stuff I have to get through before the end of the month. I don't know why I always leave things for the last minute and then book back to back activities like sleep is optional or something. 🤦🏻‍♀️
I spent the whole week working on my writing sample/editing and it is still not done??? I had to take a mini break and get myself a milkshake before I had a mental breakdown. Again, it's fine we are going to be fine it's all good.

So, my Saturday went like this.
I did my advance studying in Microbiology and read some Manga as my break.
I'm loving this sweater weather. It kinds sucks that it has to rain this much to really enjoy it, though. I made a chill playlist and I'd like to share it with y'all once I finished it. ヽ(o^ ^o)ノ
