"The completion of the openVertebrate (oVert) project is a significant milestone for natural history museums, as well as researchers, educators, students, and the public. How come people just kinda assume that overt/covert system presentation is a strict binary and you are either one or the other lmao

Our system is pretty covert even in the presence of other systems, and we struggle to communicate our needs or who is fronting, but we know other “covert” systems who are more easily able to present overtly

We also know a lot of more overt systems who mask or present covertly depending on environment

And I’ve heard people say this, like genuinely “I think you’re lying about being covert because you did X” when it’s really just self-identification and something that can change with therapy and environment and self-assurance

System A knows that when they switch, it's really noticeable. They envy the systems who can switch quietly and seamlessly mid-convo. But, even with massive personality changes aside, they are disruptive. They sit among a bunch of their friends thinking of this, head pounding with the urge to switch. Already, they're halfway gone, unable to remember what triggered the switch. They make a point to sneak off when the conversation gets to a peak, going to switch somewhere private – or, at least, not around their friends. But as they stumble to the door, a member of the group calls out to them.

"Hey, System A! Leaving so soon?"

They turn to the rest of them, trying to make some excuse and mention they'll be right back. Front slips from their grasp, leaving the words unspoken.

Headmate A2 looks up at their now very concerned friends, embarrassment burning up their face despite the fading dissociation.

I think people forget that the majority of dissociative systems are covert. It’s so tiring seeing ppl judge those with CDDs based on whether their alters act super differently or not. Buddy, we’re not an idiot. We act like the same person every day, it’s called masking, everyone does it, idc who you are. So yeah, especially when they’re recently coming to terms with being a system, alters are gonna act similar. Alters of ours don’t know *how* to act like themselves, they don’t ever get to take off the mask.

When we switch we’re not gonna be afk from the body for a solid minute, we’re gonna be disoriented yes, but I doubt you’re going to notice and if you do we usually say “oh I was just thinking/daydreaming.” The POINT of the disorder is to hide itself. The symptoms are real, but not as easy to spot as some might believe!

I know this doesn’t go just for OSDID as well. I’ve seen the same with OCD and neurodivergence. I’ve been told I don’t “seem obsessive,” and that I’m “too smart” to be autistic. Mental disorders are mental, guys! You don’t know what’s going on in someone else’s head, so don’t claim ownership of it. Stop marginalizing other peoples struggles because you saw Split or watch The A System on Tiktok 🙏

there were any number of characters i could have gone for for this prompt but i decided to tap into my inner horse girl and give epona some love :) she's my best friend. i bought a twilight princess amiibo for her

Rick describing Thalia in Sea of Monsters as "somewhere between a punk and a goth" (plus every subsequent time he uses "emo" and "goth" interchangeably to describe Nico, and that one time Percy describes his ideal self as punk) tells me Rick has no idea what music/fashion subculture terminology is.

im like 90% sure he thinks "goth" and "emo" are the same thing. He's literally just describing emo/punk here. there is nothing here that screams "goth." this was 2006. sir.

Abuse has a goal behind it, and a lot of the time, it's about changing the victims behavior. If someone screams at you for not doing X activity, eventually you learn to do X activity. If someone hits you when you defy them, eventually you learn not to defy them. If someone abuses you frequently enough, and you begin to break down to their will... It is possible to reach a point where it may seem like you're not being abused anymore.

They don't yell anymore because you stay quiet and do what you're told. They don't threaten you anymore because you don't voice even the slightest disagreement or need. What used to be screaming fighting arguments have become lectures at your expense. They may even praise you for doing what they want you to. And all those mundane moments - breakfast, the rare kind act - stand out more. Your perception of the relationship skews even more. It's all normal now.

And it's still abuse. It's just reached its end goal - wearing you down so badly that they don't need to overtly abuse you anymore to get what they want. All they need to do is make a joke, or complain to guilt you, or tell you want to do/not to do, etc. etc. The fact that's all it takes now doesn't make what's happening to you less severe - if anything, it means you're in much, much more danger than you could realize.

It's abuse. It's horrific. It's just not obvious anymore... and that's terrifying. You deserve so, so much better. You deserve to truly be safe - not to have your wellbeing held behind fearful compliance. That's not safety. That's not love. That's abuse. It being psychological doesn't make it less dangerous.
