Never Look Down
Part 1: Din’s Evening
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
Prompt: “I don’t know what’s happening but I love it.”
Summary: Din has been ignoring his crush on Grogu’s babysitter for a while now, with varying degrees of success. But after a misunderstanding leads to some revelations, there’s no denying things any longer. Sometimes you just need to look at things from a different perspective.
Rating: Mature (18+) with a smidge of explicit
Pairing: Din Djarin x Original Female Character (for his POV scenes) / Din Djarin x Reader (for her POV scenes)
Word count: 5,330
Tags/warnings: alcohol, drunkenness, vomit (no description), numerous references to erections, some swearing, references to sex, non-explicit smutty thots, Din carries OFC a short distance, masturbation (male, semi-explicit, but I don’t think enough to push up the rating), 3rd person POV (part 2 will be 2nd person POV and OFC will become reader/you).
Author’s note: This was originally supposed to be for @beskarandblasters’ Din Djarin Fic Club Drabble Event, although drabble this is not! Kel said there was no word limit, but it grew so long that I couldn’t even call it a one-shot anymore, so I’m uploading it in two parts to make it easier to read and I think that probably disqualifies it from the Drabble Event. But Kel, thank you so much anyway for the prompt – it resulted in me finally pushing through my writer’s block and finishing/uploading something new, so I’m eternally grateful!

He’s panicking. It’s stupid, really – he’s been in situations far trickier and more critical than this. But Karga said he needed help urgently, and now his babysitter isn’t answering her comlink.
Should he just go and leave Grogu here? It’s not like he never left him alone on the ship.
Except… something’s changed since the adoption. Din has started to care what others think of his parenting style. He hears people whisper that fatherhood clearly isn’t coming easily to him (he thought he was doing alright). He watches how his babysitter closely monitors every move the kid makes (the Mandalorians never watched him that closely). He listens when people talk about how they raise their own children (he hadn’t realised it was such hard work). And it’s made him feel as if he’s… lacking.
He hates feeling less than adequate in any area of his life, but somehow, failing as a father cuts deep. Perhaps it’s because he grew up without one. Plus, that scolding Peli gave him after she found Grogu alone on the Razor Crest still haunts him.
Although the Mandalorian method of letting them learn from their mistakes has merit (and it never did him any harm), he wants to be there for his son. So, no. He won’t leave Grogu here alone. He can’t risk him waking up and wondering why nobody comes if he calls. The kid has probably had enough of that in his past.
Why isn’t Maia picking up?
Din paces the cabin’s length, listening to the gentle ping of the comlink as it tries to connect with the one he gave her. Even the soothing pulse doesn’t ease his frustration. Diligent parenting is hard.
Just as he’s wondering if he can wake the kid and bring him along, the comlink crackles to life.
“—know what the stinking stang is wrong with it! Ah, frotz! Hello? Is this thing totally borked?”
For a baffling moment, he can’t work out whether he’s shocked or thrilled. She certainly doesn’t use that type of language around the kid, but he’s delighted to hear her voice nonetheless.
“Maia!” He interrupts her frustrated confusion as loud as he dares, lest he wake the sleeping child downstairs.
“Shiny, hi! It works! What’s up, my metal man? It’s late… is this a booty call?”
Once again, Din can’t decide if he’s shocked or thrilled. However, his dick’s instant twitch of interest proves that it, at least, is clearly siding with the latter. Dank farrik, he wishes it were a booty call. “No, Maia, I need—”
“Course it’s not!” she interrupts, giggling inanely. “Sorry, that was ridiculous, ignore me. Go on, you were saying?”
He takes a deep breath and tries to push past the stab of dismay at her labelling the idea of a booty call as ridiculous. At least she sounds in a happy mood.
“I’m sorry to contact you so late, but Karga has some kind of crisis. IG-11 is still with the Anzellans for repairs after the last crisis, so he’s asked for my help. Grogu’s asleep, but I’m gonna need you to come over and wait at the cabin until I return. I’ll pay you double your usual rate. I just don’t wanna leave him here alone.”
“Suuure! I’ll haul my jets over to you now. Five, ten minutes, tops. If you wanna take off now, I know your door code. I’ll check on the li’l bug as soon as I arrive.”
Din breathes a relieved sigh. “Thank you, I owe you. I shouldn’t be long.”
“Happy hunting, Beskar Boy! Or happy dispute settling!” Maia signs off with a melodic laugh that instantly makes him grin beneath his helmet, despite the stupid nickname.
The grin fades as he processes the meaning of the words preceding her addictive laughter, and he sighs. She’s probably right, although he hopes he’ll at least need his blaster for whatever mess the High Magistrate wants him to clean up.
Karga was once able to intimidate the townsfolk, but these days, they see him as purely a leader and captain of industry. They respect his ability to govern and improve the town – he’s more than proven himself capable in those roles. But whipping out a blaster from beneath those ridiculous robes now gains him little more than dubious raised eyebrows. By contrast, Cara was a fearsome and capable law enforcer, and now IG-11 keeps the citizens in line.
Except a reptavian tore off both of IG’s legs a few nights ago. Apparently, whatever the droid equivalent of ‘sick leave’ is, he’s taking it.
Din doesn’t mind helping out when he’s not on jobs for Carson. As long as Karga doesn’t solicit his help too often, it’s an easy way to make a few extra credits. He supposes that kind of makes him a part-time deputy, though he’ll never accept a title or a contract. But if tonight’s job is nothing more than a neighbour dispute, he’ll be a little peeved. His friend is aware of his skillset and wouldn’t contact him unless it required weapons and armour. He hopes.
He checks on Grogu once more, then equips himself with his usual arsenal, making sure to lock the weapons cabinet behind him. For some reason, his blasters fascinate Maia. He’s given her several shooting lessons, and she always asks to hold them whenever the cabinet’s unlocked. Although he doubts she’d handle them without his permission, he’d rather be present if she’s caressing his things.
Truthfully, he’d prefer it if she handled and caressed something else entirely, though he buries that thought for now. He has work to do, and an ill-timed hard-on would be awkward at best, if not downright perverse. He can torture himself later.

Din wraps up the problem in less than an hour. It does require his blaster, in fact, and he does have to shoot someone. Okay, it’s in the shoulder to disarm him, but the guy is only on his drunken vendetta because he’s heartbroken. He doesn’t deserve to die.
A year ago, he would’ve just shot him in the head and gone home. But he’s lived among the citizens of Nevarro for several months now, and he’s almost starting to feel like part of the community. Passing through it to visit the old covert was different. The Mandalorians were a separate (secret) colony, and he was merely a visitor who lived on his ship. Even though his new home is still on the outskirts, Grogu attends the school in town, and he already knows many of the other parents by name. These days, the market stall owners try to chat with him instead of looking away in fear as they used to.
The guy standing on a table in the cantina tonight with a blaster trained on his ex and her new flame is someone Din recognises. He can’t recall from where, but disarming rather than killing him feels like the right thing to do.
Once he has him in binders, he delivers him to Karga and hurries straight home. The lava flats are quiet and peaceful this time of night, free from the nocturnal bustle of the town and lit only by the celestial display above. There’s no sulphur fog tonight, and the air smells fresh.
But as pleasant as it is, he doesn’t dawdle. Just like every other time he’s left Maia in charge, he relishes the chance to walk into his home and see her there. As if she belongs. He finds that image far more dazzling than the constellations sparkling above him. It’s far sweeter than the fresh air he inhales through his helmet filters as he hastens toward his cabin.
He can’t pinpoint when his interest in her changed from professional to passionate. Grogu made it clear that he liked her best out of the several childminders they auditioned, so he gave her the job. At some point between then and now, he became enamoured with her.
But he can’t do anything about it.
His loyalty to his son means he can’t fuck the babysitter, so for now, Maia belongs to the kid, and Din sleeps alone.
Even though he’s had no serious relationships in the past, he imagines he’d be willing to try it with her. But since it’ll never happen, it’s not worth dwelling on. He’s noticed a few locals checking him out, so he can always approach them if he’s looking to get laid. He’s much more used to casual encounters.
But none of that stops Din from thinking his babysitter is beautiful. It doesn’t stop him from wishing he could run his hands over her welcoming body, indulge in her tender touch and heady scent, sink into her depths over and over until she’s crying out his name as they shatter together in ecstasy….
Dank farrik, he’d better quit thinking like that. He has enough trouble controlling his physical urges around her as it is. In fact, it’s starting to become a problem. He’s lost count of how many times he’s had to dash off and furtively rearrange himself so his stomach padding hides his boner. He can’t wear the flight suits with the tight pants around her anymore, so the looser-fitting ones are getting much more use. In fact, he’s wearing his last pair. (That reminds him: he needs to do laundry tomorrow.)
Maia teases him whenever she can, but it’s always friendly, not flirty, and it doesn’t come close to being sexual. He’s never caught her looking anywhere other than directly at his visor. Still, he can’t help feeling embarrassed whenever something she says or does causes his cock to harden. He simply can’t control it.
Din reaches the cabin and punches in the door code, happy to note that his guest has locked it from inside. Her diligence and attention to detail certainly helped him trust her in his home from the outset of her employment.
Stepping across the threshold, he notices all the lights are out except for the one above the kitchen sink, which is unusual. Stranger still, all it illuminates is a near-full cup of water standing in a pool of condensation.
Nonetheless, it’s bright enough for him to survey the rest of the room cast in shadowed shades of grey.
He can’t see Maia.
Instantly, his heart rate rises, although he doesn’t panic. She’s probably just in the refresher or the kid’s bedroom with him. But the amount of moisture surrounding that cup shows it’s been sitting there almost as long as he was gone, which is curious. And there’s no light coming from downstairs either.
The cabin is small, with an open-plan kitchen and living space, and a staircase leading down to two bedrooms and the refresher. Din’s priority is his son, so he creeps down the ferrocrete steps, well-practised at following the route silently. With his night vision on, he can see that Grogu’s door is open a crack, and he pushes it wider. Little purring snores verify that the kid is sleeping soundly, and he slides the door fully closed to ensure he stays that way. Good.
Since his babysitter wasn’t in that room, and she wouldn’t invade his private space without permission, there’s only one other option. He bypasses his own bedroom opposite Grogu’s and heads to the door facing him – the refresher. He can’t pick up any sounds from within, but he’s not about to invade her privacy by listening too intently. The door is fully shut, but there’s a faint glow through the ventilation grill at the bottom, too weak to be the usual lights. A glowrod?
That’s rather odd. He’s grateful that Maia avoided putting on the hall lights while Grogu’s door was ajar, but she could’ve switched on the refresher lights once inside.
For an unsettling moment, Din isn’t sure how to proceed. He really doesn’t want to interrupt her if she’s busy. But… his instincts are telling him something is off, and he wants to know she’s okay.
He’ll give her a little longer. He’d rather be cautious than a perv.
He retreats upstairs again, conducting a thorough check of the living space and kitchen but finding nothing abnormal or suspicious. Nothing besides that abandoned cup of water, at least. Next comes his nightly check of the cabin’s weak points – the windows and entryway. He secures them all, figuring he can escort Maia out when she’s ready. Tipping away the water, he runs a fresh cup, turns his back to the stairs to lift his helmet and drink, and refills it. Finally, he disarms himself of most of his weapons, leaving one blaster in its holster and his vibroblade in his boot. He likes to bring some of his usual arsenal downstairs with him, even though he has multiple spares in a secure cabinet near his bed.
Which is where he’s headed now. Din sets the drink on his nightstand, switches off his night vision, and switches on the dim bedside light. His guest has seen him armourless a few times before, so he begins removing his beskar and the rest of his kit. He’s almost finished – just his armourweave stomach padding to go – when he hears a thump from the refresher.
In seconds, he’s outside it again, listening intently for any further clues. He’s been in the business of handling unconscious bodies for decades, and that sounded like an unconscious body.
“Maia?” he tries, keeping his voice low to ensure he won’t disturb the kid.
Nothing.
He knocks gently, giving it a few moments.
Still nothing.
Okay, now he’s really starting to worry. He returns to his bedroom, grabs his vambrace, and flicks through his visual settings until he’s replaced his night vision with the thermal overlay. He hopes he isn’t crossing a line here, but what else can he do? Walking to his doorway, he takes a deep breath… and directs his visor at the refresher.
Dank farrik, she’s on the fucking floor. Why didn’t he check sooner?
Jabbing off the thermal overlay, Din throws his vambrace on the bed, then rushes to the refresher door. He keeps his voice low in case he wakes Grogu, hoping it reaches her anyway. “Maia, I don’t know if you can hear me, but I hope you’re decent because I’m coming in.”
He gives her five torturous seconds to respond or get decent if she isn’t already, and then he keys in the override code. The door slides open, revealing his unconscious (but blessedly fully clothed) babysitter slumped near the toilet, lit by a glowrod on the floor next to her. He can now hear her breathing heavily, though it doesn’t sound laboured, just a deep state of sleep.
His helmet isn’t sealed, so straight away, he’s able to detect the lingering smell of vomit. A somewhat grim consequence of being both a bounty hunter and a father means Din can also distinguish types of vomit. Although she has flushed, there’s no air filtration with the lights off, and the residual odour tells him that Maia has been drinking alcohol.
It also explains her unconscious state, so his worry dissipates a little, and mild annoyance starts to creep in.
She agreed to look after his son when she’d been drinking?
He kneels down next to her, laying a hand on her shoulder. “Maia. Wake up.” He shakes her, but she doesn’t stir.
He assumes she slipped from a propped-up position against the toilet, and the thud he heard was her slumping onto the ferrocrete floor. Did she bang her head? If that didn’t wake her… shit.
He tries shaking her again with as much force as he dares, and she groans and curls up even more. She’s fighting it, but he sees consciousness sluggishly returning.
“Maia, it’s Din. Can you sit up?”
“… y’can’t make me sing for the cup….” She’s still half asleep and confused, but that’s not surprising. A few seconds later, she cracks open her eyes, becomes aware of her situation, and slams them shut again. “Oh… fuuuck… no no, m’sorry… so so so s-sorry… please don’t be mad at meee….” She’s tearful and rambling but mostly coherent, even though she’s still curled on the floor with her eyes squeezed closed.
“What happened?” He can’t think of anything else to say until he’s established her culpability. He knows she wouldn’t drink on the job, so she must’ve been drinking earlier this evening. It certainly explains her overzealous response on the comlink. Dank farrik, he should’ve realised. But, no, he was busy revelling in his own drunken high from her joke about it being a booty call. Idiot.
“It was accidet— ac-ci-den-tal,” she continues from her foetal position. “Tried to call you back, but m’comlink’s busted… figured better I’m here drunk than not at all… ’m sorry sorry sorry, kark, pleeease don’t hate me. I jus’ wanted to make sure the li’l man was okay. I didn’t realise how much I’d had till I stood up, n’ it hit me worse on the way over. But Grogu’s fine, I checked. But I’ve grossed up your ’fresher, ’m sorry…”
Din sighs. In the scheme of things, Maia did the right thing. He’d rather she was here puking in his refresher than risk his child waking up alone. And it occurs to him that she achieved a surprising amount while seemingly drunk as a pirate. She secured the cabin, poured herself some water, stomached a few sips, managed to descend the stairs unscathed, and checked on the kid. Then she sealed herself inside the refresher and threw up neatly into the toilet bowl with no spills, even managing to flush before she passed out. And she did all that by the light of a glowrod so she wouldn’t wake Grogu.
In many ways, his babysitter’s actions tonight were more responsible than some of his own questionable choices regarding his son’s safety. He can’t be mad at her.
He tells her so. “I’m not mad, Maia. Thank you for coming over anyway. Can you sit up? I need to know you’re okay.”
Her eyes are still clamped shut, but she cracks them slightly as she tries to push herself off the floor. It doesn’t go well, so Din reaches forward to help, and together, they get her into a stable sitting position. Nevarro’s volcanic environment means the basement maintains a cosy warmth, so he’s not surprised she passed out down here. It’s not exactly soft, but those who grow up in the Outer Rim spend their lives making do. He likes that she’s a survivor. Like him.
“Everything’s s-spinning,” she groans. “N’ my mouth tastes like bantha balls.”
Din suppresses a snort. “Hold on.” He climbs to his feet, retrieves the cup of water from his bedroom, and then passes it to her. “Here, sip.”
After she’s taken a few delicate sips, Maia gives him back the cup. “Don’t wanna puke again.”
“You won’t,” he assures, placing it in her hands again. “Pretty sure you got all the alcohol out of your system already. You gotta rehydrate, or you’ll feel worse.”
Kneeling down next to her again, he watches her try to follow his instruction, pleased she trusts him. He can’t help but admire how adorably dishevelled she is. Her hair is mussed, her clothes are wrinkled, and she keeps pouting between sips… but it’s all so… cute.
Once she’s had half the cup, he accepts it back, though she follows it up with more apologies. “M’so sorry… , m’such a karkin’ idiot… I get it if you don’t want me to look after Grogu anym—”
“Stop,” Din interrupts sharply, unwilling to let her beat herself up. “This is as much on me as it is on you. I didn’t ask you if you were busy. I demanded you come over and bribed you with extra credits. I didn’t question why you sounded different on the comlink. And I didn’t wait for you to arrive. If I’d done any of those things differently, you might not have ended up on my ’fresher floor. So I’m sorry too.” Maia doesn’t reply besides blinking at him a few times, so he asks, “What was the occasion? For the drinking, I mean.”
“One year of freedom from a terrible relationship,” she states resolutely, and for a moment, she seems a little more sober. “Me n’ Zandi, we were both in deep with some mudscuffers who locked us in when we were too young to know any better. But we got lucky. Marshal Dune caught them dealing spice, and now they’re spending a decade mining the asteroid field at the edge of the system. The Nevarran tribunal sentenced them a year ago today, so we drank to celebrate our freedom.”
Din doesn’t really know how to respond. She’s made some previous passing remarks about the toxic relationships she and her friend escaped from, which he’s always taken as hints of her wish to remain unattached. It’s yet another reason he wouldn’t feel right about making any sort of move on her. He settles on, “You… deserve to celebrate.”
“Thanks, Shiny.” He bristles at the nickname out of habit, but he secretly likes that Maia has numerous nicknames for him. “N’ you deserve a ’fresher without a woman on the floor. I should get outta your way, Beskar Boy.”
She tries pushing herself up but instantly becomes dizzy and topples to the side. Din’s naturally quick reflexes kick in, and he positions himself to catch her, letting her fall into his chest as his arm snakes around her back. Before he can even process what he’s doing, he’s slipping his other arm beneath her knees and lifting her up.
“Whoa!” she exclaims, grabbing onto his flight suit with one hand while the other flies to grasp his neck. He almost shivers from feeling her clutch at him so keenly. “I don’t know what’s happening, but I love it! Thanks for the lift, muscles!”
He’s glad his bold move has amused rather than perturbed her, so he doesn’t answer, too busy willing his cock to remain unreactive to this sudden closeness. His main goal is to get her off the ferrocrete floor and put her down somewhere softer as fast as possible. As he elbows open the door and navigates out of the refresher, he makes a split-second decision. His bed is closer than the couch.
“Shiny! This is your bedroom!” Maia whisper-shouts as he steps through the door. At least she’s lucid enough to keep her voice low in case Grogu hears across the hall.
Din grunts in agreement as he approaches his bed and starts carefully lowering her onto it.
She keeps going in a gleeful whisper. “Is this…? Are we…? Kriff, I never thought I’d actually end up in your bed, metal man! I mean, it’s been a dream, sure, but I figured your creed thing meant, like, no sex or whatever. But holy frotz, I guess tonight really was a booty call! Count me the fuck in!”
He’s already laid her down by the time he fully processes her words.
Dank farrik, he’s a fucking idiot.
He will never have sex with any woman in this state. He’s not that kind of guy. The fact that being with Maia is a dream for him too is meaningless, and so is the possibility that she might actually want him. Because does she really? Maybe this is still the alcohol talking. It has to be. Right?
It doesn’t even matter. All Din needs to do is extract himself from this situation in the least awkward way possible and without having to reject her verbally.
But how?
He points a finger at her. “Stay put.” She bites her bottom lip and acknowledges his order with a sloppy salute.
Damn it, the image of her lip caught between her teeth is now burned into his brain, haunting him with forbidden promise.
He pads back to the refresher in his socks and closes the door, relieving himself, flushing, and then pouring some cleaner down the toilet to sit overnight. He then washes up at the sink as fast as possible and refills the cup of water. Returning to his bedroom, Din places the cup on the nightstand along with the glowrod that belongs to his guest.
Speaking of whom…
In his brief absence, Maia has toed off her shoes, stripped naked and strewn her clothes across the floor, and burrowed under his covers. She’s still bleary from the booze, but he sees fire and lust behind her hopeful gaze as she blinks up at him.
It kills him.
He remembers he never finished removing his armour, so he retrieves the vambrace from where he threw it and places it on its shelf. Then he finally removes his stomach padding and puts that away too, directing his visor anywhere except at the naked woman in his bed. He’s doing everything possible to deny the physical reaction her presence is giving rise to.
When he’s done, Din approaches the bed again, acutely aware that she’s tracking him with a hunger he shares but can do nothing about.
Fuck, this is torture. The blanket has slipped down (or maybe Maia has arranged it) so low that it’s daringly close to exposing her nipples. She’s right there, waiting for him. Wanting him.
But she’s drunk. And she’s his kid’s babysitter. He tries to quell his ache by thinking about how she’s thrown up this evening, which would make kissing gross. It helps for a second, although the idea of kissing her at all ends up eclipsing the negatives, and he hardens even more.
Shit, he cannot think about kissing her. Or how naked she is. Or anything like that. Vomit. He should focus on vomit.
Okay. Din taps off the bedside light and picks up the glowrod, then heads to the door in the dark, stumbling over her clothes strewn on the floor. He can’t activate his helmet’s night vision without his vambrace control, but he won’t put it back on just to navigate his escape. Nor will he switch on the glowrod yet because he doesn’t want to see any dismay or regret in her eyes as he leaves her. He wants to remember the hunger he witnessed there.
Hazardous garments notwithstanding, he finds his way to the exit.
Crossing the darkened doorway’s threshold, he whispers, “Get some rest, Maia.” Then he fumbles for the control and taps the door close button, releasing a sigh as it swishes shut behind him.
Switching on the dim glowrod, he traipses upstairs. It’s going to be so kriffing awkward in the morning. Nonetheless, one thought keeps repeating itself to him above all others, one he can no longer prevent his dick from swelling at the prospect of.
Is she really attracted to him?
He has to know.
Din extracts another blaster from his cabinet, knowing he won’t sleep without one beside him. Then he sits heavily on the couch, thinking about how often he used to sleep in his helmet before this cabin became his home. It’s the first place he’s felt secure enough to remove it at night, so he’s no stranger to sleeping beneath his beskar mask. It’s almost a comfort in a way.
With his face covered in a darkened room lit by nothing but a glowrod while those he cares for slumber downstairs, more memories return…
Sitting in the Crest’s darkened cockpit, fucking his fist by the swirling glow of hyperspace, chasing a release during those first stressful days as a fugitive. In theory, if something had pulled him out of hyperspace, someone could’ve quite literally caught him with his dick in his hand. But the odds of anyone being close enough to peer in through the transparisteel at that very moment and notice his furtive actions were slim. Back then, he was so untethered that in his weaker moments, he desperately sought anything that made him feel good. Fleeting moments when he could pretend his life wasn’t falling apart yet again. The risk was worth it.
Here, too, although he’s locked up the cabin and closed the shutters, there’s a risk of Maia sneaking up the stairs and finding him. But a similar desperation fills him now – the utter frustration of loss. Back then, it was the loss of a stable income, the loss of his covert. Now, it’s his missed chance – the loss of what could’ve been with the woman downstairs. And maybe even the total loss of her in his life. Perhaps she’ll be too embarrassed about this evening’s events and quit. Din couldn’t take that, nor could Grogu. It’s why he tried to avoid this.
Can they get past this? Maybe he ought to find someone else to care for the kid. Would that be best? This is getting too complicated. He doesn’t want to think about it anymore.
So, right now, he’ll imagine the positive and lose himself in the fantasy, just like he used to. He’ll think about the hunger he saw in her eyes and let himself believe it wasn’t merely the alcohol. Just for tonight, he’ll believe it’s the truth. The risk, once again, is worth it.
He’s already tenting his loose flight suit pants, so he fumbles to expose himself and relaxes against the couch cushions behind him. The wet spot on his underwear displays just how profoundly turned on he is simply by the idea of being with Maia.
After all the temptation it’s endured this evening, his cock is extra sensitive, so he begins with measured, lazy strokes. Whilst he’d love to revel in the fantasy, he knows he won’t last long. As he imagines joining her in his bed, filling his palms with those half-exposed breasts he saw, pressing his naked body against her, his movements begin to speed up and his pressure increases. Very soon, he’s plummeting toward the edge of ecstasy like a podracer pilot with the finish line in sight.
His helmet tips back to stare at the ceiling as he pictures how it would feel to sink into her warm depths, and the notion ignites his fuse, burning rapidly. It only takes a few more strokes before the powder keg within him explodes into a million tiny raptures. His hips stutter, his muscles clench, and his orgasm tears through his body. He comes hard, and a fractured groan far louder than he’d intended escapes through the modulator as he spills forth his pleasure…
Fucking. Bliss.
Din’s mind is blank for some time, just a sense of fulfilment and contentment gently rippling throughout his relaxed form.
As the real world filters back in, he’s able to think clearly, and he now knows what he has to do. He doesn’t like it, but it’s the mature and sensible option. It’s also a fucking daunting prospect, but he’s faced worse. Has he? Yes, he has. He can do it.
He tucks himself away and finds a cloth to wipe down the mess on his flight suit. That task makes him realise he’ll have to sneak into his bedroom tomorrow without waking Maia to grab his armour and some fresh clothes. And now he really needs to do laundry tomorrow. The only pants he has left are the tighter ones, which he tries to avoid wearing around her. Great, there’s another reason to dread the morning. Although it’s not as if he’s ever caught her checking out his package – she may tease him verbally, but her gaze is always polite.
For now, he’ll enjoy the security of darkness and the lingering swirl of happy chemicals in his brain.
Din lays down on the couch and switches off the glowrod. With a deep sigh, he surrenders to the relaxing state of comfort brought on by his orgasm, letting himself fall into a contented sleep. Before he drifts off, his last thought is of Maia’s beautiful lips… leaning in for a kiss….
If only.

[PART 2 COMING ON 1 JUNE 2024]
Tumblr media
Those of you who've read my work before will be familiar with my copious end notes:
As usual, it’s British spellings I’m afraid. Demographic stats say about 60% of you are American, but I can’t help where I was born, so sorry about all the extra ‘u’s and ‘l’s and for using ‘s’ where you would expect ‘z’. However, I’ve channelled my inner linguist and used American language and speech patterns since the show is filmed in the US and Din’s accent is American. All other wording is internationally neutral, including Maia’s dialogue (since the next chapter is written from her POV and I’ll be switching to second person reader insert for that, e.g. you/your pronouns). I’m a little sad I didn’t get to include any Mando’a linguistics in this fic tbh. Maybe another time.
The cabin’s layout is inspired by the concept art by Christian Alzmann that appeared in the closing credits of s3e8, in which there appears to be a staircase leading down to a lower level. That makes sense to me, as Din would need total security to sleep without his armour on, and a windowless underground room seemed appropriate. I also like the parallel that on the Razor Crest he used to sleep on the lower level in a windowless room too.
I know Carl’s absence is going to be felt when we finally get the movie, so I wanted to write something where Karga is still around. If this had been a longer piece, I would’ve had him actually featuring in it instead of being in the background, but in any case, Karga lives forever in the universes I write.
The reference to Din wearing looser pants is, weirdly, Canon. One of the ways you can tell it’s Brendan Wayne in the suit is because he seems to prefer these weird baggy clown pants. Contrast to Pedro who likes them tight (Din Peña?), as does Lateef Crowder, and as did Barry Lowin in season 2. Since Brendan did the majority of season 3, we saw Din in the loose-fitting style a lot more, so I decided to write in a reason for that beyond actor preference.
Though we have no information on Nevarro’s judiciary system, they’re an independent world who have a marshal and a magistrate, so my guess is they’d adopt the New Republic’s system of having a tribunal. Generally, group decision-making is favoured during this era, in contrast to the single-judge system of the Imperial era, so it seems more likely that Karga would encourage citizens to serve on a tribunal rather than unilaterally passing judgments himself.
Apologies to @the-mandawhor1an for using the name of your longtime established OC – it was coincidental, I promise! I chose it after looking up the most common female names in the world, one of which is Maria, and I settled on the variant Maia because it sounded like a more Star Wars-y version (and for another reason which you’ll see in part 2). I only realised when you reblogged my WIP Wednesday snippet, and it was a bit late to change it by then. I guess it’s a common name in the SWU too! But I’m sorry and I hope you don’t feel like I’m muscling in on your domain. Your Maia is of course the original Maia 💖
I made the GIF myself. Sorry it’s a bit blurry, I’m not very good at making them yet. I tried to use Tumblr’s GIF-making function, but it wouldn’t let me crop out Grogu’s ears, so this was my alternative attempt. It’ll have to do.
Definitions: Comlinks are those little cylinder comms they all use. Glowrod is a catch-all term for anything portable that produces light. All the swears/insults (stinking stang, frotz, borked, kriff, kark) are from the Legends list of phrases and slang this time (it’s longer than Canon). Nevarran reptavians are the ones that Grogu saved Karga from in s1e7 and that the Mandalorians were roasting in s3e7. Ferrocrete is a compound building material (Canon and Legends) made from concrete and iron, used in roads, reinforced bunkers and building foundations. I figured Din would only be happy with something strong and defensible, so Karga had the cabin built with it. Transparisteel is used for windows and ship viewports, as well as helmet visors.
Part 2 is written and will be uploaded next weekend once proofing/editing is complete. What do we think? Is Din gonna be dumb and tell her she can’t babysit Grogu anymore? Deny himself what he wants for Maia’s own good?

Theory: Elrond effectively wears headlamps like a Dad(TM)
Proof:
Elrond, at least on semi-formal occasions, wears “a star upon his forehead” (RotK book 6, ch.9)—that is, presumably, a pale glowing gem on some sort of coronet. This comes across as very classically Elvish (light, jewelry, star imagery), and a nigh-explicit reference to his father Eärendil. However…
Elrond’s children don’t see as well as Elves, as cited here. If his children don’t, then Elrond, even less Elvish by blood, certainly doesn’t. Now, I will admit that I forget if “Elves can see in the dark” is canon or very popular, D&D-enabled fanon, but it certainly makes sense considering that Elves flourished for centuries or millennia under just starlight, before daylight even existed…and it’s equally reasonable to assume that half-elven night vision is as relatively “weak” as their cited distance vision.
Elrond is the proud father of three, and exhibits traditional Dadly behaviors such as being a little bit of a nerd (loremaster) but also one of the most reliable guys you know, adopting any child left in his presence for a sufficient amount of time (Aragorn), and telling his daughter’s aspiring bf that he won’t be good enough for her until he has a steady job (also Aragorn).
My dad irl, who I promise is a pretty typical Dad, was positively delighted when he discovered casual-use head-mounted flashlights about a decade ago, and has self-satisfiedly worn them on every camping trip and nighttime dog walk ever since.
CONCLUSION: Elrond regularly wears glowing, star-evocative gems on his brow, especially while traveling or at fancy evening parties, and he looks great and it make people respectfully murmur Eärendilion (whether he likes it or not)… But really, it’s not a fashion statement or implicit political position or whatever; it’s because if he doesn’t have some sort of flashlight, he will trip on torchlit steps or walk into low-hanging tree branches in the dark. And it’s so much easier if it’s hands-free! (Especially when he’s spelunking for lost texts!)
His kids all go through a phase of thinking he’s mortifyingly dorky about this, then begrudgingly come to accept that it is really convenient to have a hands-free light for dark nights, caves, etc, and start wearing one themselves.

Mockingbird
Synopsis: Charles Leclerc as always been a family man, so it makes perfect sense to everyone when he chooses to adopt a child. Specifically, you.
adopted monegasque daughter reader x charles leclerc
A/N: for this one; charles will adopt y/n when he’s 28, for the most part, the grid will be the same as the 2023, everyone’s just older, and because charles’ relationships are unpredictable, he chooses to adopt and raise y/n mostly on his own.
. okay so
. again, charles has always wanted a family
. small, big, when he’s young, when he’s old
. doesn’t care, just wants a family
. specifically, a child
. but after many not-so serious and semi-serious relationships
. he realizes that he’ll have to wait a few years until he can have one of his own
. unless
. “what if I just adopt a child?”
. “I won’t have to wait any longer, I can just have one and raise them on my own terms”
. charles decides he likes this idea very much
. so he thinks it over and talks about it with his own family
. then after many conversations with his mother
. he visits a few adoption centers
. talks to a lot of social workers and child protective service workers
. finds one wide-eyed, adorable, 3 year old girl
. and falls absolutely in love
. the directors of the adoption center tell him all about you
. your birth parents, your story, your situation
. his heart was set
. the adoption process takes a few months
. so charles take that time to get ready for you
. but nothing could prepare him for the day the adoption agency called and told him you were his
. he swears it was the best day of his life
. he was beaming the entire drive to the adoption center with pascale
. had tears in his eyes when he finally got to hold you in his arms
. so then
. charles leclerc is a father
. the first two years of living with charles was definitely an experience
. you don’t remember much but he tells you how chaotic ages 3-5 were
. about how he basically lived with his mother in his childhood home for those years so she could help him take care of her granddaughter
. how much he loved getting to know you
. finding your favorite foods, toys, shows, ect
. how he loved teaching you his languages
. (he raises you in french, italian, and english, particularly in that order)
. how he cried when he dropped you off for day care and kindergarten the first time
. how he loved helping you know him
. like playing songs on his piano for you
. teaching you how to play different sports
. or watching old formula 1 races together
. speaking of formula 1
. you were raised racing
. charles bought you your first kart when you were six
. brought you to your first f1 race when you were five
. actually, charles had a love-hate relationship with bringing you to races with him during the early years of having you
. because on one hand
. there’s thousands of cameras around during a race weekend, and charles doesn’t want you televised 24/7
. and there’s also hundreds of people around him while he’s in the paddock, and he wants none of them near you
. it’s also hard to give you his full attention during race weekends
. which is something he always wants to do
. so he’s against the idea at first
. but on the other hand
. he can’t bear being apart from you for a few hours, nonetheless a few days or sometimes weeks
. and he knows you don’t really understand what’s going on, only that your dad puts on a red suit and drives a very fast car for a hour and half
. but he loves coming back to the garage to see you sitting with andrea, clad in ferrari merch and big headphones with a happy grin on your face
. it cheers him up no matter what happened on track
. and he knows he has lots of people willing to look out for you while he’s busy
. because you instantly became beloved by the grid the moment charles walked in with you in his arms
. who’s carlos sainz and pierre gasly?
. you only know uncle carlo and uncle pear
. uncle lew, uncle max, the list goes on
. although charles never lets you out of the ferrari garage
. his closest friends come in and visit you often
. sometimes because your dad asked, sometimes just because they want to
. also, speaking of max
. you met penelope during the winter break when you were five
. and even though she’s three years older than you
. she instantly became like your older sister
. and suddenly charles and max hang out a lot more often for the sake of their daughters
. anyway, the early years of living with charles were still chaotic, but he says that those years contain some of his favorite memories
. he loved watching you grow up
. sending you to primary school
. watching you kart on the same track he drove on when he was your age
. spending many afternoons at his mother’s house with his brothers
. (arthur and lorenzo are the best uncles by the way)
. watching you discover your own passions, whether that be racing or not
. traveling around the world with you, both to race and to explore
. watching you become independent, speaking up for yourself and what you believe in
. it all goes by very fast for charles
. and suddenly you’re a teenager
. by now charles is close to/about to retire
. so you don’t spend that much time in the paddock as a teenager
. but the times that you do are very fun
. instead of staying in charles’s team garage, you explore the paddock with penelope, who’s still an older sister to you
. you befriend all the newer drivers
. and hang out with whichever drivers are left from the grid when you first got adopted
. however, the drivers that charles has been friends with and have retired by now
. lewis, daniel, carlos, pierre, max, george, alex, lando
. you’ve formed your own big family with them and their kids
. because almost all of you live in monaco, you see each other often
. you guys go on vacations together when you don’t have school
. holidays on private beaches and expensive yachts
. or at booked-out ski resorts and mountain lodges
. you and penelope are the oldest, and are mostly in charge of looking after the youngest kids
. but you don’t mind, you love them
. it’s your own little f1 community
. but this is barely the beginning of having charles as a father
. he loves embarrassing you, for one
. at first glance, it might seem cool to have your dad come pick you up from school in a ferrari
. until he gets out in strangely pattered pants and a shirt that will never match
. “papa, do you not have anything else in your closet?”
. “what do you mean? you don’t like?”
. he says it keeps you humble
. you say he should just stay in the car next time
. charles does make sure you’re humble and grateful for everything you have
. but he doesn’t help by spoiling you to death
. you like something from the new gucci collection? it’s yours
. new dior bracelet you said is pretty? your birthday gift
. you think aruba looks nice? where do you think you two spend your next summer vacation
. “papa, when I said I wanted a break from school, I didn’t mean in italy”
. “but mon petit soleil, you are relaxed now, non? you’ll be back by monday, don’t worry”
. whether it be italy or not, wherever you go, charles tries to keep you as safe as possible
. he’s always been cautious of fans and paparazzi around you, no matter how old you are
. making sure you’re holding on to him when a crowd comes out from no where and gets too close for comfort
. keeping you by his side when there’s paparazzi around
. and doing whatever it takes to make sure you’re safe and happy at home/school/in the paddock
. anyway
. I could go on and on about being charles’ daughter
. but the point is that he loves you
. you’re y/n jules leclerc
. his petit soleil
. he couldn’t imagine his life without you

They're siblings, your honor
All of the hermits are one great big psychotic family. Here are the roles of the ones I know enough to point out properly and even reasoning. Might make this a foster au BTW.
Xisuma is the father, obviously. But like he's the kind of dad that works night shift just to see his kids more often. He's the kind of dad that adopts kids by pure accident. He's the dad that is always there to give advice and definitely got half of those tips from the internet and the other half from personal experience.
Doc is the eldest child, he was adopted by X because one day he just fucking appeared with his three friends at X's house (its basically a mansion because of how much space he needs to keep all of these kids in check) trying to steal food and supplies. He got caught because he hit his head on a doorframe an it woke up X lol. Doc would be like 17 in the au and he would immediately find a reason to not like Grian.
Beef is one of the people who arrived with Doc, he is on month younger than him and he's the reason X let them stay he night because he immediately invoked pity.
Etho also arrived with Doc, he is two months younger than him and he was supposed to be the only one going in to steal because he knew how to be sneaky but he had no conception of what was needed to survive on the streets so the rest had to join him.
Bdubs was the final person who arrived with Doc and he is a year younger than he rest of the NHO (he came up with the name in the au) Bdubs and Doc have this weird sibling rivalry where they'll have a huge argument over something important then Bdubs will ask for a ride two minutes later and suddenly all is well with the world.
Grian is classic middle child vibes except he's the kind of middle child that causes so many issues that he actually gets attention constantly. When Doc arrived (Grian was adopted a year before Doc was) he immediately accidentally broke Doc's robotics project he had been working on since before they met. Immediately he realized he effed up while Scar was only scared because Grian was. Grian is like 15 btw
Scar is three weeks younger than Grian and he is the kid who always gets in trouble for the most obscure things in school. Like comes home early cause he was suspended for creating a pyramid scheme for monster energy drinks kind of obscure. Also he has scammed most of his adoptive siblings out of their allowances.
Cub is Scars twin in this, he helped with all of the scams and pyramid schemes. But he never gets caught. Nobody knows how but he never got into trouble in school even though he sold pens that had test answers written on a piece of paper in them.
Cleo is 17 in this, she is the on who is put in charge of the house when X is gone because the NHO was deemed irresponsible after the incident which ended with Grian, Scar and Mumbo locked in a closet with the NHO taunting them through the door. Cleo is the only child who owns a car and the one who is consistently begged to drive people places. She has since used this to her advantage and now has the others pay by the mile.
Ren is younger than Cleo but is older than Mumbo, he apparently knew Doc before they were adopted and was adopted first. Ren is the classic theatre kid and does drama after school every Wednesday and Friday. One time he was supposed to watch the younger kids because X was at work, Cleo was shopping and the NHO group was doing stuff. This ended with X coming back to Ren about to be sent to exile (the yard) because he had crowned himself as king of the house and the TV remote was his magic scepter and he wouldn't let anyone else switch the channel.
Mumbo is a year younger than Ren and he used to be considered the most mature, for all of five minutes until he started doing things, these include; making a custom lock on his door out of rubber bands and twine which proceeded to somehow work two whole times before it ripped the doorknob out of the door, making a semi sentient robot out of an old furby and a gameboy, naming it Grumbot then adopting it with Grian, and then accidentally setting his curtains on fire while he was testing a homemade microwave because he wants one in his room but couldn't afford to buy one.
Pearl is the same age as Grian in this, she is labeled the demon child by every other sibling except for Gem and Cleo but she embraces the title. She is called this because she is known to bring dangerous animals into the house and her room is half full of terrariums and tanks of animals. She has brought in multiple spiders and snakes from outside and kept them as pets, she also has a running joke of taping objects to the ceiling so they're upside down. Her biggest prank was attaching everything in grians room to the ceiling including his bed and nobody except Doc, Cleo and Pearl herself know how it happened.
Joel is somewhere between Grians age and Bdubs' age. He is known for getting caught while pranking people in the house consistently. Which is a good thing because most of his pranks will end in something catching fire. He has started multiple cults and has convinced people to give him money to 'support the religion' He makes way too much money from it because he has multiple siblings convinced that the made up gods are real. He uses this money to buy insane amounts of Lego's to build with. He shares them sometimes. He also has a girlfriend at his school (Lizzie) and also whatever odd thing with his friend (Sausage bc c!Joel is probs poly) whom he has 'joint custody' over a small child they babysit sometimes.
That's all of the hermits in the au, here is all of their age in order of oldest to youngest ig
Xisuma (32)
Doc (18)
Beef (18)
Etho (18)
Cleo (17)
Bdubs (17)
Ren (17)
Joel (16)
Mumbo (16)
Grian (15)
Pearl (15)
Cub (14)
Scar (14)
And here is the order in which they were adopted;
Cleo & Ren
[Two months later]
Grian & Scar
[One week later]
Cub
[Three months later]
Pearl
[Two and a half weeks later]
Mumbo
[The next day]
Joel
[Seven months later]
Doc, Beef, Etho & Bdubs
Here is how/ why they were adopted.
Cleo and Ren were both originally foster kids and X was fostering them. They were about to age out of the system and be forced to live without any real help so X offered to adopt them.
Grian and Scar were runaways from their sucky homes and survived on the streets for a total of three days before X found them while he was at a picnic with Cleo and Ren. He took them in pretty quick.
Cub was actually Scars friend from school who tutored him sometimes, while staying over for dinner one night X asked about his home life. Cub explained that he had been emancipated and lived on his own. X offered to let Cub stay for a bit and Cub never really left.
Pearl just appeared in X's yard one day trying to catch a frog who had hopped into it. X was trying to find out where her parents were and she just sat there very confused on the concept of a parent and she claimed she had just appeared in existence one day. X was going to put her in the foster system but decided to just adopt her.
Mumbo was a kid up for adoption that Grian knew and Grian spent about three weeks convincing X to adopt him before X finally agreed.
Joel was found injured am knocked out in the forest one day and a pink haired girl (Lizzie) carried him over to the first safe looking house and knocked on the door. She was let in until Joel woke up, Joel said he was from space and X had decided that wasn't the weirdest story he's been told and yoinked him. X was close to adopting Lizzie until he found out Lizzie already had parents.
Doc, Beef, Etho and Bdubs were lab escapees who were apparently tested on in a shut down lab a few towns over. They had been living on the streets for a few months before they were caught trying to steal from Xisumas kitchen at five in the morning. They were adopted instantly.
Should I write this as a multi POV book of one shots from the same universe and put it on ao3? This is an idea just now occurring to me.

ok but now that i know paz is a literal father, i need him, din, and boba to get together and talk about their kids.
boba adopted like 5 semi cyborg teenagers so he needs advice, he has no fucking clue what he's doing and fenecc won't help him bc she wants to see her boss/boyfriend/punching bag struggle lmao. ragnar is still a child so he hasn't gotten through puberty yet but boba still asks paz "what do i do when they're angry and growling at me?" and paz would genuinely try to give dad advice, he'd be like "try to talk with them and if that—" but din and his two cents decides to step in and helpfully suggests "if they fight you, fight them back. or give them frogs to calm down. that works with grogu" and boba just...boba just goes back home sgshsjsjjs

i have recently been brainrotting about a batkids racing au. all of them have either shitty home-lives or have had their home-lives taken away and all turn to the concepts of semi-legal street racing as an outlet. in the process, they meet people perhaps in the same boat-- perhaps a family.
Dick
around 21, has been racing since he was 15
likes riding smaller cars. the tighter fit the better. if it's not sleek and swervy he doesn't want it.
had caring parents who he travelled the world with by car, but they died in a car crash when he was 11. due to lack of living relatives, he was in the foster system for 4 years before Barry (Allen) took him in. he never saw Barry as a father, however, and was never officially adopted. basically Wally's roommate and Bart's older brother figure in a way.
Wally introduced him to the street racing world, and despite being very very reluctant at first (car crash trauma), Wally showed him all the good parts of it and he's loved it ever since
experienced racer, everyone there loves him and he's well known as one of the top racers
Jason
20, been racing since 17
he generally prefers driving motorcycles but make no mistake he will shred you no matter what racing vehicle you give him (he's competitive.) in terms of street/car racing he will go for anything with powerful acceleration.
his dad was a mechanic and Jason would sometimes help him out with car repairs when he was younger, although his dad would sometimes drop a bit too much workload on him and not really care for his well-being
mom was a recovering drug addict, cared for Jay but couldn't be around much due to both rehab and hospital visits
his dad was later arrested for underground drug dealing, dying in prison and his mom died of overdose. at 13, he was in the foster system for more or less a year before he ran, living on the streets for 3 more years, doing odd jobs.
at 16, he met Roy, who later (at 17) introduced him to street racing. Jason always had a knack for cars and with his natural talent he won quite a few of his first races, earning money from the betting pools and has been basically splitting rent and crashing with Roy ever since.
absolute MENACE of a racer. showed up at some point and basically showed most people up. can and will judge your car model. might steal your tires for the funsies.
Tim
18, new to the racing scene (been racing since 17) but knows A LOT about it through his own love for motorsports (he definitely has car posters in his room)
will drive any car. literally. he will just love it if you give him a car. in fact, give him a broken one so that he can make it BETTER than everyone else's.
lovely and wealthy parents, but they aren't around much. they honestly try their best, but when you're an only child in a big house it can get boring and lonely. he loves his parents and his mom was the one who first showed him motorsports when she was working on a business deal with a motorsport company (Tim got his first free car poster that day)
definitely takes pictures of cool cars he sees
as soon as he found out about the street racing ring in Gotham he immediately snuck in (age 15)
he would come practically every night he could and made friends with the younger racers (bart, cassie, kon) (they 100% would go to him for geeky car tech tips)
one time bart was sick for a race and cassie and kon asked tim to step in for him on the team, tim did-- he performed so naturally well that he caught the attention of other racers, decided to stay with the YJ team permanently
commonly referred to as a rising star, a prodigy in the racing scene
Damian
15, literally raised into motorsports. god knows when he drove his first car. he started officially racing in the street ring only recently, but already has a reputation as one of the best
preference for aerodynamic cars. the sleeker the better for him.
commonly underestimated by new racers
bruce is still his bio dad, he literally funds most the betting pools and co-runs the street racing ring under the guise of a totally normal auto repair store
hella competitive, will do everything to outshine you especially if you look down on him
LOVES painting on his car. like everyone customises theirs to a certain point but Damian will sit there for hours just painting on it.
does NOT care for the betting pools, if he wins he will just put all the money right back in. he just wants to win and beat you LMAO

In Too Deep | 0.4 | Jake Seresin
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Jake Seresin had sworn he was never going to be a father. He liked his life the way that it was, child-free, stress free and chaos free. Free being the key word. After falling for you, it becomes clear that Jake is in for an attitude adjustment, whether he likes it or not.
Warnings: no smut, maybe allusions to sex at various points, swearing, fluff and teeny bits of angst if you squint. Alex is hereeeee!! No major warnings (:
“Is it just me that doesn’t understand the rules of soccer at all?” Coyote asks, adjusting his cap to wear it backwards as he squints towards the pitch. Fanboy nods in agreement at his side.
“They aren’t playing yet, this is them warming up.” Phoenix explains from the bench in front.
“Oh yeah — Nix, aren’t you on a girls soccer team?” Coyote realises, turning his head from the sport to look at his colleague. They’re a group of six adults, sitting on the bleachers, watching a children’s soccer match. Payback brought his daughters along, hoping that this will inspire them to finally sign up for a sport.
“Women’s team. But yeah. Where is Rooster with our drinks?” Phoenix furrows her eyebrows as she turns to look in the direction he wandered off in fifteen minutes ago.
Bob chuckles softly, then points. All six heads turn. Eight heads if you include Payback’s daughters, who are both bickering over who gets to have Jax sit on their lap, and Jax who is none the wiser and sipping on an apple juice on Payback’s knee.
Rooster’s got two cup holders in his hands and seven drinks, standing a couple of feet away with a woman about ten years his senior giggling and leaning into his touch. He seems thrilled with the attention.
Jake can’t pretend he isn’t amused. Still, he looks back towards the team and lifts his phone, snapping pictures of Riley laughing with her friends to send to you. Then he turns the camera and captures pictures of Jax, now adopted into Payback’s family, the two girls leaning in and grinning around him as Payback grins.
“See, girls, doesn’t this look like fun?” Rueben asks, nodding towards the girls on the pitch. Hayley shrugs, like this might be something she would consider doing, whilst Allie shakes her head adamantly.
“Hey, Romeo — can I have my soda, please?” Phoenix calls out. Rooster shoots her a glare and apologises to the woman. Jake laughs softly.
He maybe shouldn’t have brought everyone along, but it’s the semi-final match — if Riley’s team makes it through this then they’re in the district finals. Jake figured she could do with the moral support, since you’ve never missed one of her games before.
“Got her number.” Rooster grins as he slides onto the bench beside Mickey. Phoenix scoffs and grabs her drink from him, shaking her head. “Her kid’s number 7.”
“The one pulling that other kid’s pigtails?” Javy asks, scrunching his nose up distastefully at the brat that’s assaulting other players. Rooster shrugs as he passes out the other drinks,
“I’m sure they’re just playing around.” He sips on his Diet Coke, then winces as Number 7 sticks her foot out and trips another kid.
Jake checks his watch, they should be starting soon. Riley was a little upset getting ready for her game this morning, he knows that she’s missing you more than she’ll let on. The three of them did video call you last night, but it seems to have made her notice your absence even more.
Still, it’s Saturday now and Jake has almost made it through the first week — the three remaining are going to fly by and then you’ll be back and you’ll see how serious he is about making this work.
“Riley’s headed this way.” Bob comments, adjusting his baseball cap. It’s branded with the team’s crest — Jake doesn’t even know where he got it from, he just turned up wearing it after his bathroom break a couple on minutes ago.
“Daddy!” Riley gasps. Ten sets of eyebrows all furrow at the same time, if you include Jax and Payback’s kids. Six heads turn towards Jake, then back to Riley, shocked. Jake’s heart stops. She’s running right at them.
They’re all thinking the exact same thing. No way has she finally accepted him.
Then she throws herself into the arms of the man who has just crossed in front of the bleachers. Jake hadn’t recognised him from behind. He’s seen pictures of Alex with the kids, but he hasn’t ever met him.
“Hey, princess!” The man kisses her cheek and turns. His eyes land on Jake immediately. Jake pushes himself to his feet, crosses a couple of rows down and holds his hand out.
“Hey, Alex. I’m Jake, it’s good to meet you.”
“So you’re the babysitter, huh?” Alex chuckles. Javy’s eyebrows raise. He and Mickey exchange looks. There’s no way Jake is going to let this kind of disrespect just slide. Rooster looks at Phoenix as he sips his cola, giving her an ‘are we really about to get into a fight at a kids soccer game?’ kind of look.
Jake’s hand is still extended. He keeps up his polite smile and forces a soft chuckle, “Anything that their Mom needs me to be.” Alex squints at him. Jake now knows where Riley gets her attitude from. She’s still hugging his neck.
“I missed you so much!” Riley declares. Jax peers around Bob’s shoulder to look as Jake finally drops his hand, realising that there’s no way he’s getting that handshake.
“Hey, little man. Come say hi to Daddy!” Alex sets Riley down on her feet and holds his hands out for his son. Jake turns to look. Jax looks between Jake and his father, then sinks back into Payback’s arms. “Jax.”
Jake looks between the toddler and your ex-husband, “He’s just shy.”
“He’s my kid, what does he have to be shy about?” Alex challenges. Javy shifts in his seat, expecting the fight to break out any minute now. Jake shrugs his shoulders and takes a step back.
“They’re calling me. Daddy, are you going to stay for the whole game?” Riley asks. Alex smiles at her and pats her head,
“Of course, princess!”
Alex settles in on the same bench as Jake, but a good ways down. Enough room for at least two people to come and sit between them if they wanted to. Jake pretends not to notice.
The game starts with a goal from the opposing team. Coyote wonders if it’s bad form to boo at a children’s soccer match. They catch up eventually when one of the girls on Riley’s team trips over the ball and sends it into the back of the net, completely by accident.
“So where’d you get that hat?” Alex asks. It takes Bob a second to realise he’s being spoken to, and he does a double take once he does.
He grabs the brim of the pink baseball cap and tugs it so that’s it’s down over his forehead a little more securely. “Oh, uh— Riley gave me it. They have tonnes in that box down there.”
Every single adult there silently takes a moment to wonder why Bob was given a hat and they weren’t. Phoenix is never going to admit it, but she wants a hat.
“It’s pink.” Alex points out.
“Sure is.” Bob agrees without looking away from the field. He doesn’t see the look that Alex gives him in retaliation. Alex, however, does see the look that Phoenix gives him in response. He shrinks down slightly.
Jake isn’t paying attention, which is a testament to which parent is here for the right reasons and which one isn’t. The captain kicks the ball to Riley, who’s headed down the pitch with it with zero interference.
“Yes… yes… YEAH!” Coyote leaps from the bench, grabbing Jake’s shoulders and shaking him as the ball hits the back of the net.
“Go Riley!” Jake’s on his feet too, the pair leaping up and down and clapping as Riley turns towards the stands. She’s beaming when she first looks and finds her own little support system of naval aviators all cheering for her.
Jake watches her smile falter. He follows her gaze, turning his head to find Alex looking down at his phone and sending a text. He missed it. Jake wants to tackle him off of that stupid bench.
“So, her team’s winning now?” Hayley asks as everyone settles back down into their seats. Payback can’t help but laugh at the fact that she had jumped up and cheered as much as the rest of them, but apparently had no clue what was going on.
“Yeah, fifteen more minutes left on the clock, so if the other team don’t score then Riley’s team wins.” He explains to her. Jax, disgruntled after all of the yelling, has wriggled out of his arms and paces along the row.
He stumbles as his tiny foot slips into the gap of the bleachers, falling forwards, cushioned as his face hits Rooster’s back.
“Whoa,” Jake turns, reaching back to grab the toddler under his arms. “Careful, buddy. You okay?”
Jax whines and wriggles as Jake lifts him up, setting him on the ground in front of himself and Rooster so that they can keep an eye on him. Of course, Jax doesn’t answer.
“How about you do your job and watch the kids, babysitter?” Alex mumbles angrily as he looks up from his phone. Rooster thinks for sure that this is going to be where the fight breaks out. He tucks an arm around JJ’s middle and pulls him back, just in case Jake leaps up.
“What’s your problem?” Phoenix interrupts. No one’s allowed to fuck with her friends but her. Jake gives her a look, silently asking her to let it go.
Coyote leans in from the row behind, also ready to defend his best friend’s honour.
“My problem? — You didn’t see that? — My kid could’ve seriously hurt himself.” Alex scoffs. Jax is fine. He’s not even paying attention to the conversation, instead he’s tugging softly at Rooster’s dog tags while Rooster makes small talk with the three year old.
“He didn’t. He just tripped.” Coyote answers.
“Always get your buddies to fight your battles for you, babysitter?” Alex taunts.
Phoenix rolls her eyes — she knows he’s just saying that because his original point was so ridiculous. She glares, softening as Jax lifts Rooster’s dog tags and offers them to her whilst they’re still around his neck. He makes a soft sound of excitement. Rooster grins at the soft look on her face.
“No battle here, we’re just watching an eight year old play soccer.” Jake’s calm as ever, even though deep down he wants to put this jerk in his place. He wouldn’t dream of causing an issue in front of the kids.
He notices the dejected way that Riley’s been performing since Alex missed her goal. She keeps looking over, checking to see if he’s watching. He isn’t, he’s still glaring at Jake.
Alex isn’t an unattractive guy. He’s tall, blonde haired, traditionally handsome. But he’s not Jake.
Riley’s team still wins because of her goal, but there’s no action for the last fifteen minutes. Riley’s barely even playing by the end of the match, just sulking around the field.
“You did awesome, Riley!” Fanboy grins as she walks back over to them. She simply shrugs her kit bag closer to her shoulder and forces a polite smile.
“That wasn’t her A-Game. You played way better at last season’s finals.” Alex comments as he pushes himself up from the stands. Riley nods in agreement. Now, Jake really wants to throw him on the ground and scream at him until he sees sense.
“Looked pretty special to me.” Jake interrupts as he steps down onto the grass and pats her shoulder. “How about we stop and grab some lunch to celebrate?”
“I’m down, I’m starving.” Coyote agrees, hopping down and patting Riley’s other shoulder. Jake smiles. He hadn’t planned on bringing them, but he guesses they’re all coming along now.
“Will you come with us, daddy?” Riley asks.
“Ah, I can’t. Maybe next week.” He waves her off. “You work on those passes, okay? — I’ll see you soon.”
Payback can’t believe what he’s seeing, he scrunches his brows. All of them watch in distaste as Alex turns away, pressing his phone to his ear and answering with a quiet hey, babe.
“What a dick.” Fanboy mutters to Payback.
Rooster lifts JJ up onto his shoulders, squeezing his ankles, “We’re starving. Where are we headed for lunch?”
“I say that the star player picks. Where do you want to go, Riley?” Jake asks. Riley shrugs her shoulders and turns quickly, stomping her feet as she takes off in the direction of the car park.
“I vote burgers.” Coyote decides for her.
A half an hour later, they’re all crowded into a booth with Jax on Jake’s lap, pretty much shoulder to shoulder.
“Dad’s right, I could’ve played better.” Riley mumbles as she picks at her fries. Jake’s doing his best to take the moral high ground and not be the stepdad that talks shit about the biological dad.
Phoenix hasn’t taken the same route. “Pfft — there’s no way your dad would’ve made that goal. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, you were incredible.”
Riley lifts her head, shocked.
“Nat knows what she’s talking about. She plays too.” Fanboy comments. He’s sitting on a chair at the end of the table, squished in next to Bob. Riley looks between him and Phoenix.
“Really?” Riley asks softly.
“Yep, and I bet that you and I would kick your dad’s ass in a game. You’ll figure it out, parents rarely ever know what they’re talking about.” She explains. Jake’s eyes widen as he kicks her ankle under the table. She smiles at him.
“Thanks for that.” Jake scoffs.
“Bob.”
The table falls silent. Every single head turns. Jake cranes his neck to look down at Jax, brows scrunching together. At first, they all think that it’s a fluke. One of the babbling sounds that Jax can make. They wait, with baited breath, for confirmation.
Then, Jax lifts both arms, reached out and makes grabby hands towards the WSO at the end of the table.
“Bob!” He shrieks excitedly. There’s more intention behind the demand this time. He wriggles against Jake, reaching out for Bob again. Bob lifts his head, lips parting in surprise.
“Did he just…?” Rooster whispers. Jake shushes him hurriedly.
“Holy shit…” Coyote whispers eagerly.
“Say it again, buddy.” Jake encourages, squeezing at the toddler’s sides. Bob wipes his hands on a napkin and reaches out, smiling and nodding his head.
Jax looks up at Jake, who nods encouragingly and points at Bob across the table.
“Bob!” JJ giggles excitedly as Bob grabs him under the arms and lifts him across the table. The toddler turns and grins, like he’s so proud of himself. Jake’s heart is thundering in his chest.
“That’s it! Atta boy!” Fanboy ruffles Jax’s curls, all of them grinning. Jake chuckles softly and tucks Riley under his arm, his heart swelling. He wishes you were here to see this.

Dp x Dc Blurb #5 (I think)
SO SO HAD THIS THOUGHT WHILE MAKING MYSELF FOOD!
We know, well, fandom kinda goes that ghosts form when around ectoplasm as well as have a strong enough desire to make a core. And Gotham is like Amity but less ley line more murder (so not as good ecto but still just as much, have to be a stronger ghost in general to be fine there).
Martha and Thomas Wayne are very much the type of people to come back as ghosts. No vengeance, no protection. They just wanted to see how Bruce, their little Brucie, grew up. They just wanted Family.
And that's exactly what they got!
They were thrilled when Alfred filled the role of father, even if he later claimed to just be a butler. Dick appearing in their lives was one of the happiest moments, how they wished they could tell him that his parents wished him well before moving on a few years later. Jason was adorable! Though it was upsetting to watch the other two begin too fight. It was even worse to find Jason joining them, even temporarily. Tim was a blessing to the family, keeping it from fully falling apart, and oh how they wished they could help all their little boys, because they knew where they all were and how they were feeling at all times.
With each addition they were thrilled for the large family, yet sad they could never interact, never help. Jason could sense them, but he'd only gotten help with his illness recently, poor child, he was still so ill.
The two Waynes had been there for it all. Watching, wishing, and gently tucking each of the boys in, even when they were far away from home.
But something was still missing. Both could feel that frail bond reaching out for another part of their family. A young boy they discovered while following it. He was about Damian's age, and could see them! He didn't seem aware he was adopted, let alone had a family waiting for him, but he also seemed so overwhelmed. The two decided to watch him but leave their little Danny alone. At least, they would until he was in danger.
And just like with the rest of the family, danger came.
It was just a random afternoon when they'd felt the pull of panic from the half ghost child, yet they couldn't leave Gotham so quickly. Bruce and Dick had a fight for the first time in a long time and...well it wasn't pretty and left ALL of the other children worried and confused.
So with the ectoplasm they'd gotten with their growing family, and even visiting their halfa on occasions, Martha and Thomas Wayne decided to do something about it.
The mansion was haunted. For the last few days things had been going completely haywire with no reasonable explanation but ghosts, or magic, but from what they knew the two went pretty hand in hand. So they decided to call Constantine to figure out why.
None of them expected Bruce's parents. Especially when they told them they needed to go save their brother Danny...a name that one particular batkid hadn't heard in a long time.
~~~
Open ended on which one, but sibling of batkid implied.
Martha and Thomas kept getting stronger with each kid Bruce adopted/got, Steph and Barbara inculded, and could feel a semi-frayed bond with one of the kid's biological brother and it led to Danny 🤗
They didn't plan to introduce themselves since the boy seemed happy enough despite the stress, they did not really see what his homelife was like. It was only after they felt something happen through their bond (which because they have obsessions based around family they can sense their own family) that they realized something was wrong and decided a good ol fashion haunting to catch their attention so they could find a way to tell them to get their brother.
Chapter 10/34 - new years rockin' eve
[Read on AO3]
Tumblr media
After the pleasant, downright normal Christmas they'd had, Mulder wasn't surprised that their New Years Eve was spent being chased by zombies like something out of one of his bad horror flicks.
He did, however, get to spend it with Scully, which was all he really could have asked of the day.
Their first few days back at work had been pretty run-of-the-mill. The traffic in the hallways was a little lighter, with some agents taking additional days off until after the new year. They used their slow days to complete the adoption paperwork and send it in, which allowed them to put it out of their minds so they could finally focus on work.
Aside from Skinner briefly asking in passing if they'd actually done it (trying his hardest to appear only mildly interested), it was easy to forget the monumental step they'd taken over the holidays. Their rings remained safely tucked under their clothes while on the job, but when he was at home, Mulder liked to wear it in its intended place, finding it helped him focus his thoughts when he twisted it idly on his finger.
A mangled arm was a small price to pay for ringing in the new year with his partner by his side, all things considered. A happy ending for all, most especially for Frank Black and his daughter.
Scully watches as the older man wraps the girl in his arms, burying his face in her hair. It's a sweet sight, but something about it makes her grow pensive, her expression darkening.
“What kind of world would we be bringing a child into, Mulder?” she asks quietly, unable to tear her eyes away from the little family as they leave the room hand in hand.
Her words surprise him in their negativity, drawing a halfhearted chuckle from his throat. “Correct me if I’m wrong, Scully, but adoption usually means we’re getting a kid that’s already in the world, doesn’t it?
Her shoulders deflate a little and she casts an unamused glance in his direction, looking far more vulnerable than she typically allows herself to be.
“You know what I mean.”
He does. Of course he does.
“Well, it’s the same world people have been bringing children into for millennia,” he reasons. “And now we’re about to be in a whole new one.”
He nods back at the TV screen, tuned in to Dick Clark's coverage of Times Square. All those people, completely oblivious to the dangers lurking in this world that defy logic and reason. Zombies are the last thing on any of their minds as they count down to the new year.
“But I believe mankind, in its essence, stays the same,” he finishes.
He'd faced this question months and months ago when Scully had asked him about IVF. Was this a life he could bring a child into? Was he a person worthy of being a father, even if only by genetics? The conclusions he'd come to had not been arrived at lightly.
“We can do this, Scully,” he says, softer. Sure. “We might have to make some changes, but… when it comes down to it, you and I are no different than anyone else wanting to raise a child.”
She gives him a disbelieving look, her eyebrow quirking into the air. He knows what she’s thinking; The reanimated corpses they'd just encountered would like a word.
“No, think about it,” he continues. “What's the one thing all parents—well, the good ones—have in common?” His question is semi-rhetorical, and she doesn't seem inclined to respond, so he answers for her. “They want what's best for their children, and they do all that they can to provide it to them because they love them. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm pretty willing to do just that. And I think you are too, if these are the things you're worried about.”
Scully sighs, looking up at him from beneath her eyelashes. “Mulder…”
“I promise to protect you and any children we may acquire from zombies and all other supernatural forces of evil, okay? Is that what you want to hear?” he adds, his joke finally drawing a smile out of her.
“Don't call it 'acquiring,’ Mulder,” she says with a breathy laugh. “That's weird.”
With the mood successfully lightened, he turns his attention back to the TV, where Dick Clark is beginning to count down.
“The world’s a-changing, Scully,” he says as he moves closer, tilting his head up to watch the broadcast. She mirrors him, standing close by his side.
“Thirty seconds, now. Thirty,” Dick Clark announces as the camera hones in on the Times Square ball, lit up in bright colors as it begins its descent. “Hug your friends and loved ones tight. What the heck, whoever that person is next to you. No time like the present!”
Now there's an idea…
“Here we go!” the announcers chant.
Ten!
Mulder looks down to his left. Well, she is standing next to him, after all. Why not?
Nine.
She's smiling. She has a beautiful smile, too. He's always thought so.
Eight… Seven… Six…
New Year's Eve is plausible deniability, right? If this doesn't work? Maybe there's a written rule somewhere he can check…
Five, four.
Well, it’s not like they haven’t done it before…
Three. Two.
Is this a stupid idea?
One.
Without further ado, Dick Clark's voice cheers, “Happy New Year 2000!” and Mulder makes his decision, leaning toward her with purpose. No turning back now.
She catches him at the last second, and by then it's too late to play it off. The only option is to follow through.
And follow through he does.
His eyes flutter closed as his lips make contact with hers, their touch light and tentative as it had been in the courtroom just a week before, only this time, he waits a moment longer to pull back. Her hand reaches up to cup his cheek, and it immediately sends his heart pounding into his throat, and he finds he can't speak. Auld Lang Syne is playing, but the sound fades from his ears.
The only thing his senses can hear, feel, taste, smell, is her.
When he opens his eyes again, she is staring at him, an unreadable expression on her face. Her hand hasn't moved, and neither does he.
“I—”
“Mulder, I—
Whatever words he was trying to conjure to explain himself die on his lips in an instant, and he can do nothing but gape at her. The air feels charged, and all at once he wishes he'd never done it and that he'd done it years ago.
His eyes flick down to her lips and then back to her eyes, desperate to know what words will come out of them next.
“I– got a call from the adoption agency,” she finishes, and his thoughts come crashing back to the present, his heartbeat pounding at an alarming rate. However he'd thought she might finish that sentence, that wasn't it.
She's looking at him though, worry flickering in her eyes.
“Th– the adoption agency?” he asks, his good hand slackening its hold on her lower back.
She nods.
“What did they say?”
Suddenly he feels nauseous, like maybe the mixture of zombies, drugs, and potentially life changing news was a little too much for his stomach all in one night.
“They… said that our application looks good, and they want to schedule a preliminary interview.”
At this, even his fingers on his injured arm have to reach out to her, brushing against the fabric of her shirt at her waist and stretching his sling to its limit.
“What?”
She nods again in confirmation, looking equal parts scared and excited.
“Scully that's– that's great news! It's good news, right?”
He doesn't know what he'll do if she gets cold feet now. A crushing blow like that isn't exactly how he'd like to start out this century, much less the millennium.
Her hand drops to his shoulder and she smiles, holding tight to him.
“It's good,” she confirms, though a trace of doubt still remains in her voice.
He pulls her into a hug, resigning his poor limp arm to be stuck uncomfortably between them, but otherwise holding her tight.
“Mulder, we're actually going through with this?” she asks into his shoulder.
He nods emphatically, a wide grin stretching his face. “Heck yeah, Scully!”
“They could still tell us no.”
His little pessimist. Good thing he's got enough belief for the both of them.
“Not until they've seen us and we've pled our case,” he says, pulling back to look at her. “Call ‘em back and make an appointment!”
Tears begin to pool in her eyes and she nods shakily again. “Okay,” she says, and releases his shoulder to wipe the wetness beneath her eyes. “Okay, I’ll– um… I’ll call them tomorrow.”
He wants to kiss her again. He wants to so bad, but he doesn't. Emotions are understandably high, and this entire situation is so confusing and complicated already, that he's not sure anymore where they stand.
One day, he thinks. One day he'll find the courage.
“Hey, Scully,” he says instead, placing his hand on the back of her neck to capture her attention.
She looks up at him tearfully. He shrugs and smiles goofily, relief and hope shining in his eyes.
“The world didn't end.”
~~~
Should I? Oh, why not. One more chapter. It's the weekend.
Chapter 11/34 - confessions
The interview with the adoption agency is scheduled for Friday of that week, which Skinner happily approves time off for. That leaves less than six days to prepare, and Scully busies herself with making sure they have everything they could possibly need to maximize their chances.
Tumblr media
The night before the big day, Mulder is ordered to come over for a last minute study session (not that he would have been unwilling if she’d asked nicely, but with the stress she’s under, it comes out as more of a command). It feels like Arcadia again, going under cover, making sure they both have their stories straight.
Only this time, their cover is more or less their real life, give or take a few necessary oversimplifications.
“So, we’ve covered employment, medical history, familial relationships…” Scully lists, kneeling beside an array of papers spread out on her coffee table. “Am I leaving anything out?”
She bites the tip of her pen, glancing over her notes with her brows furrowed in thought. Reviewing this stuff could mean the difference between a happily ever after and rejection, that’s the scariest thing. She just wants to be thorough, and Mulder—bless him—has humored her thus far, answering questions, finding solutions to explain their… less than ordinary pasts.
It takes her a moment to notice when he doesn’t immediately answer, the silence dragging on just a little too long. Her first assumption is that he’s fallen asleep—which she wouldn’t blame him for if he did—but that assumption is quashed the moment she looks up at him on the couch, the serious expression on his face instantly shifting the mood.
“Mulder?” she asks, a worried crease appearing on her forehead.
"You know, we never talked about it," he says quietly, carefully, glancing across the coffee table at her. “Not really.”
"About what?" She’s starting to get anxious.
"The IVF."
And there they are, the three letters that still fill her stomach with dread and immense sadness anytime she hears them.
I. V. F.
"Mulder..." she starts, but he only leans forward, reaching out across the coffee table for her hand.
"I want to. I really do, Scully. I need to talk about it. It could come up tomorrow."
"I don't really like... thinking about it,” she says softly, wanting desperately to look away from the pleading expression that she knows she can’t say no to.
"I know. But don't you think we should?” he argues. “I mean, we can't brush it away like it never happened, Scully, I won't do that. It was important to me."
She doesn’t want to hear this. Her heart twists painfully, and she slams her eyes shut to lock down the tears beginning to form, shaking her head. Sure, she knows he’d wanted it back then, had hoped it would succeed. But it’s too late. It’s in the past, and she’d like to leave it there, if at all possible. To hear him say, in as many words, exactly how much he’d invested emotionally in those tiny embryos…
She doesn’t think her heart can take it.
"Since when do you like talking about things like this?" she asks, trying once to pull her hand away. “Things that… cause you pain?”
He clings on tighter, rubbing soothing circles on the back of her hand with both of his. "I can tell you the exact moment, Scully, and it’s when you knocked on my door in a dingy motel room and asked me what those bumps on your back were."
His earnest words stun her into silence.
Rain on the windows. A story of tragedy and determination. Honest words coming from the lips of a man she’d met only days before.
That trust had been there from the start.
He stands from his place on the couch and circles the coffee table, carefully pushing aside the papers in front of her to make a space for himself to sit. "The past hurts, but somehow—” he continues, “somehow you make it easier to face. To me, at least."
She sighs, turning her head so that she can muster enough strength to answer his heartfelt plea. Articulating something like this is not her strong suit, but for him, she’ll try.
"I– I've never wanted anything more in my life,” she breathes, the admission one she has never spoken aloud.
It’s the truth, though, and he knows better than anyone how difficult that is for her. Scully is not one for dreaming big, expecting rich blessings from the earth or her life. She, like him, has grown used to being disappointed, to having the things she wants taken away from her. He could make an itemized list, if he wanted to, of all the ways they’d been let down. Even the expectation of a clean, comfortable motel room has been slowly drained from her, and yet she had still allowed herself to hope in this.
“You know, for a minute, I really did think it had worked, that I was—" She pauses, leaving the word pregnant to hang in the air. Instead, she takes a shaky breath and continues. "Do you remember that day I got sick in the car on the way to a crime scene?"
She doesn’t have to specify which one, because it had only ever happened once, that was what was so odd about it.
"I thought that was it,” she says, “I thought that maybe—"
"I thought the same thing," Mulder cuts in.
Of course he had. She’d guessed as much that day, too, between bouts of heaving into a plastic bag in the front seat of their rental car.
The way he treated her extra carefully, taking turns slower, making a point to turn on the blinker with every lane change on the highway, stopping at a gas station for some ginger ale… She had allowed it all, too—the special treatment—because what if she was? She couldn’t risk it until she knew for sure. If that was her only chance…
Her lower lip trembles and she ducks her head. "I tried to keep my expectations low, but..."
His finger lands on her chin, tipping her gaze back up to face his.
"It would have been pretty cool, huh?” he says, offering her a small smile for comfort. “Can you imagine telling Skinner out of nowhere that we combined our DNA in a petri dish? I think the vein in his head might have actually burst.” He laughs, and is graced with the smallest of smirks for his efforts.
"I'd have these dreams,” she continues. “What our baby might look like, what personality they'd have. Whether they'd… be more like me or like you."
His lips. Her hair. His passion. Her scientific mind.
"Well, hopefully you,” Mulder speaks, smiling at the thought. “I think you've got your hands full already with one of me. There are many who would say you were crazy even to ask me in the first place."
She looks up at him with her head tilted, her eyes softening.
"I knew what I was doing."
She can tell by the way he brushes off the compliment that he doesn’t believe her, so she doubles down.
"I'm serious, Mulder. You're brilliant, imaginative, bold, caring... I wouldn't have chosen you if I didn't want my child to share those same qualities."
She loves Mulder. She loves every infuriating little thing about him. She'd have been lucky to have a son or daughter with his kind, gentle personality, his determination to keep fighting when everything in his life is telling him he can't win. Teena Mulder didn't know what she had, with Fox Mulder as a son. He should have been loved, cared for, nurtured, supported all his life. Instead, Scully has the sense that the first and only person he has trusted to give him all that is her, and that is not a responsibility she takes lightly.
"I pictured this little boy,” he says, his lips curled in a sad smile as he speaks. “Dark sandy blond hair with just a hint of your red. Blue eyes just like yours. Jeans absolutely filthy with dirt and grass stains on the knees."
She closes her eyes, allowing the picture to form in her mind. She smiles, but it's pained. Such a beautiful thought, never to be.
"How can I miss someone so much that I don't even know?” she asks, the hurt audible in her voice. “Someone that never existed?"
Mulder presses his lips tightly together in thought, his eyes trailing over the room.
"They say that grief is the love we have that has nowhere to go, because that person has left us,” he starts, his voice reverent and pensive. “They never talk about how to love a person we never had in the first place, or a dream that’s just out of reach. But still, I think that love feels just as real as any other kind.”
He has a way with words, her Mulder. It has been the bane of their assistant director’s existence on numerous occasions, when such existential ponderings found their way into his reports.
But now… Well, it's just another thing she loves about him. She wonders if he's allowed himself to grieve for Samantha, or if his belief that she's still out there somewhere makes him fall into that second category.
"I just wish I hadn't put us both through that,” she says. “That I dragged you into it..."
"I'm glad you did,” he’s quick to assure. “Scully, that day you asked me was one of the happiest days of my life. The future is such a messy, terrifying thing, sometimes. You showed me that it doesn't have to be that way. That there can be hope. I'd forgotten what that felt like."
She's silent, unsure of what to say in response to that. He has all the right words, and suddenly, she has none of them.
"I don't regret it for one moment, Scully. We gave it a try."
She purses her lips, forcing back tears that are threatening to spill. "I don't think I could have done it without you," she says, shaking her head.
"Well, obviously,” he says, the corner of his mouth quirked up in a cheeky smile.
She gives him a look. "Mulder…"
"I know, I know,” he says, turning serious again. “I'm honored that you let me be a part of it."
That she would have let him be a part of so much more. A family. Everything, if he had wanted it.
"Well, listen,” he continues, “we ace this interview tomorrow, and we're back on track. Plenty of kids out there that need a home, right? Someone's bound to pick us."
His optimism emboldens her. "I hope so."
"We got this, Scully. They're gonna take one look at you and know for certain that you're meant to be a mother."
She distracts herself from his sweet-sounding words by focusing her attention on his loosened necktie, smoothing it down with one hand. "I'm picking out your tie,” she declares. “No alien decals or wild shapes and colors."
"I think it shows personality," he says in mock defense.
She can’t help the fond smile she flashes at him, glancing up into his eyes. "Not tomorrow, it doesn't."
-.-.-
The agency they ended up going with is out in Annapolis, so on the day of their interview, they drive out together, mostly in silence. Scully fidgets with the folder full of information and other documents they might need, picking at the corner of it while she goes over the important points in her head.
Mulder holds the door open for her when they arrive at the building, and she double checks that her ring is in place on her finger before approaching the front desk to check in. They’re instructed to take a seat in the small waiting area, and Mulder follows and sits down beside her. On the coffee table in front of them are a stack of brochures, the same one she found on Mulder’s desk what feels like forever ago. That had been the catalyst for this entire affair, and now look where they are.
She never could have imagined it.
A few minutes later, a plump older woman appears from behind a door, smiling at them warmly.
“Alright, Mr. and Mrs. Mulder?” she says, checking her clipboard.
Scully stands, followed by Mulder. “I, uh– I go by my maiden name. Scully,” she corrects.
“My apologies, Ms. Scully,” the woman says, leading them into her office and taking a seat behind a wooden desk.
They sit down in a pair of chairs opposite her, taking in their surroundings. There are dozens of thank you cards lined up on the windowsill behind the woman’s desk, presumably from families who have benefitted from the services offered here. It fills her with a cautious hope, though does nothing to quell the restless feeling that has plagued her since she woke up this morning. Mulder has kept his cool, so far, and she wonders how he does it.
“My name's Brenda Koske,” the woman continues, introducing herself. “I’ll be your case manager throughout this process. Should we just get right into it, then?”
They nod, unable to do any more than that at the moment.
“Okay, then,” Brenda says with a beaming smile, opening up a file folder on her desk. “So, tell me about yourselves, what made you look into adoption?”
"Well," Scully says, looking at Mulder for approval. "I– We found out a few years ago that I am unable to have children. We tried in vitro fertilization last year, but... it wasn't successful."
The woman at the desk nods and jots some information down in a notebook. Scully suspects their story, so far, is a familiar one.
"And how long have you been together?"
Scully's mouth drops open, but she isn't sure what she'll say. Before she has a chance to stammer something out, Mulder answers, "A little over seven years, now." He’s confident. Sure of his answer, despite it being a lie, or at least an egregious stretching of the truth.
The case manager writes down some more.
"And I see here that Ms. Scully has petitioned for the adoption of a child before. Emily Sim?" she states, checking her notes.
Scully tenses, and Mulder puts a calming hand on her knee.
"It's a long story," he says, answering for her, "but Emily unfortunately passed away from her chronic illness before the adoption proceedings could get very far."
Brenda nods. "I understand that this is a difficult subject, Mr. Mulder, I'm just trying to get all the information I need. From what I see here, this child was the biological child of Ms. Scully. I'm afraid I need more of an explanation."
She knows Ms. Koske doesn’t mean any harm by asking these questions—after all, they’d prepared for them last night. But it’s still hard to hear them come up.
Thankfully, Mulder was paying attention and is more than willing to take the lead.
"My wife was treated for her infertility by a doctor we couldn't trust,” he explains. She still finds it odd to hear him refer to her in that way, but it makes sense that he does it now. He can’t very well call her ‘Scully’ in front of the woman they’re trying to convince to give them a child.
Now comes the next part of their explanation.
“Her ova were stolen and used without her knowledge or consent, and Emily was a result of that. It was complete happenstance that we even discovered what happened."
"I'm very sorry you went through that, Ms. Scully," the woman says, looking genuinely sorry for her. "Quite a world we live in."
You have no idea , Scully thinks, and nods in recognition of Ms. Koske’s expression of sorrow.
"And you're married?" she asks next, her pen hovering over a checkbox on the form in their file.
"Yes, just recently,” Scully answers. The box gets checked.
"Congratulations! Why the long wait, if I may ask?" Brenda says.
“I ask myself that every time I look at her,” Mulder says while leveling her with his adoring gaze. He’s dialing up the married man act, which he is definitely within his rights to do, but it still catches her off guard. She hopes he doesn’t overdo it, risking tipping off their case manager.
"It, um– It never really seemed like something necessary for us to do," Scully answers, ignoring his sickly sweet comment and hiding her blush.
Mulder turns back to Brenda and adds, "But we figured, if adoption works out..."
"We'd like to make it as simple and straightforward as possible," Scully finishes.
"It certainly will help," the agent says, nodding as she jots down another note. "Where would the child be living?"
"I– We have an apartment in Georgetown.” Scully’s heart flutters anxiously at the close call, thankful she was able to correct herself before misspeaking.
"An apartment," the woman says as she adds that to her notes. It's impossible to tell if she means it in a good or bad way, and Scully can’t make out her handwriting enough to tell.
"I have money set aside from my father's estate," Mulder cuts in, causing Scully to look at him in confusion. "We'd eventually like to buy a house, if this works out." This wasn’t something they’d talked about in any of their previous discussions, nor has he ever mentioned it before, so she doesn’t know where it’s coming from. When she catches his eye, he gives her a subtle shrug.
They’ll have to talk about this later.
"I'll put down the Georgetown address for now," Brenda says, smiling encouragingly at them. "Just a couple more questions for now, you guys are doing great." Scully exhales in relief, her shoulders relaxing just a little. "I have to ask about your work. Your medical history tells me that your jobs put you in some pretty dangerous situations. What are your plans should a child be placed into your care?"
Mulder nods and squeezes Scully's hand, encouraging her. They'd planned for this, too.
"I plan to take a step back,” she answers, “I've spoken with our boss, and he's assured me that I could return to a teaching position at Quantico while serving part time in my current department as a consultant."
"Mr. Mulder?" Brenda says, turning to him next.
"I will be doing the same."
Scully looks at him incredulously, which the woman thankfully misses.
"It's time for us to settle down,” he continues, avoiding her questioning stare. “I think we've accomplished most of what we set out to do with our work, and we can't keep doing it forever, especially if we want to start a family. I've talked to our director about seeking out replacements for the both of us. Someone else will take over the department, while we lend our expertise as needed to the new agents."
This is the first she’s hearing about this too, but she wisely keeps her mouth shut, letting him say whatever he needs to say. Starting an argument about this now would not tip things in their favor.
But he can’t be serious about giving up the X-Files, can he? It hadn’t even crossed her mind to ask. Arguably the main reason he started the unit was to look into the disappearance of his sister, and that case remains unsolved. Would he just walk away? Would he resent her for it eventually, if he did?
"I'm glad to hear you're making strides in that direction,” Brenda comments, a pleased smile gracing her lips. “I was afraid we wouldn't be able to consider your application on account of your chosen field of work, but it sounds like you’re serious about starting a family.”
She writes some more and it falls silent. Mulder wraps his other hand around Scully's, bringing comfort and reassurance to them both.
"Last thing—and I'm sorry to keep bringing up difficult topics—” Brenda starts again. “Ms. Scully, you were diagnosed with cancer three years ago. Is there any chance it could return? You understand why I have to ask, don't you?"
"Yes– I understand,” Scully nods, swallowing nervously. “Um, no, I've been told there's little reason to think it will ever come back. I've been in remission over two years now."
Brenda nods and makes a final note, her pen leaving the paper with a flourish. "That's great, I'm so happy to hear that." She closes her notebook and file and smiles. "Well, you two, it sure sounds like you're overdue for a happy ending. Hopefully we can do something about that."
She shakes each of their hands in turn, standing up from the desk to escort them out.
"It was a pleasure to meet you, we'll be in touch as soon as your application is approved, and then we'll start looking for potential matches."
"Thank you very much, Ms. Koske," Mulder says, the perfect picture of a responsible adult worthy of becoming a parent.
Scully mumbles her own "Thank you," too overwhelmed to manage more words than that.
Mulder places a hand on her back and leads her out of the office and into the hall, standing closer to her than he usually does when they walk this way. His neck bends so he can see her face, and he whispers, "You hear that, Scully? She said when our application gets approved!"
Scully shakes her head, not wanting to get ahead of herself quite yet.
"She said 'as soon as', not when,” she corrects.
"Same thing,” he argues. “Come on, that went well, don't you think?"
"I hope so," she says.
His stride is confident and energetic. "It did, trust me. We had all the right answers."
"I was so nervous. I knew she would ask about my cancer," she states, shaking her head in disappointment.
"She was just being thorough,” Mulder assures her. “Cheer up, Scully, the part we had to worry about is over! I'm taking you to lunch."
"Mulder, we really should just get back to work—” Scully tries. She’s supposed to be the responsible one, after all. Reining him in. Wasn’t that why she complemented him so well?
"We're celebrating. One step closer to being parents, right Scully?"
It’s time she admits it to herself: she failed at reining him in years ago.
Now, she just goes with the flow. The best surprises are around the corner when she does so.
She hopes that this time is no different.

what do you think llojavi's child will be? I love reading your hc.
mmhhh i never really stopped to think about it tbh! kid fics aren't really my go-to and i'm terrified of having children myself so it's not something i tend to explore with my ships
but if i had to have a hc for them... i think they'd have a lot of children. all of them adopted.
it just makes sense for them as characters imo! they are both deeply compassionate individuals who know what it's like to lose both parents and know how much it means to be brought in to a loving family. they know.
they wouldn't be able to come across a child who needs what they received at one point and look away.
that plus lloyd is an only child, he always wanted a little sibling and was absolutely delighted to get julian, i think once he gets over the instinctual fear of "oh god what the fuck am i doing i don't know how to be a father" and is more comfortable in his role as parent he wouldn't be able to resist the idea of having a bunch of kids running around their home. i'm thinking maybe four. probably six. no more than eight.
but. i do think the first kid would be javier's fault.
in one of those rare occasions he's not glued to lloyd's side, he'd go out to run some errands or something and then come back with a semi-terrified look on his face and a far-too-small-for-their-age kid in his arms.
lloyd just,,, stares at them for a little bit before taking the kid and charge of the situation. he's never really had any experience with kids but they're just,,, people. in tiny. he knows people, he can work with that. his friendly and straightforward demeanor immediately wins over the child, making him relax and open up in a way that javier's warm but stilted demeanor weren't quite able to.
i'm thinking a four or five year old, just to really hammer down the parallels between javier and him. very tiny. with dark hair and dark eyes. the kind of features that don't really stand out in a crowd.
i think the two of them would think it's just something temporary, just until they find someone more suitable to raise a kid, a good family that could take him in.
neither of them really mentions the idea of keeping the child, at first because it's not even a possibility but then as the weeks pass by because they're just too wary of disrupting the routine they unconscionably created and actually having to take a decision about it.
but then one morning javier looks over during breakfast and there's lloyd pilling all sorts of food into the kid's plate, chatting him up the entire time, playfully teasing him into eating everything he can, the two of them very solemnly haggling and bargaining over just how many vegetables he has to eat in every meal and a wave of pure love and affection rushes through him and he realizes that. oh. he wants this to last forever.
he doesn't mention it tho. he knows lloyd has always talked about having an easy, relaxed life, free of any concerns and burdens. and raising a child is not an easy responsibility. spending the rest of his life at lloyd's side already feels like more than he deserves, he won't selfishly asks for more than lloyd is willing to give.
he will just enjoy however long this lasts and hope the separation won't hurt as much as he's bracing himself for.
meanwhile lloyd caught javier with the kid on top of him napping on a sunbeam like two weeks ago, both of them completely sprawled out and dead to the world, except when they unconsciously moved to chase the moving sunlight and then he immediately decided he was gonna keep this. them. all of it.
he already reached his limit on how many times he can lose his family. he's no longer letting anything else keep him from hoarding his loved ones like a dragon with their treasure.
and he's terrified to admit it but the pipsqueak has already burrowed his way into his heart and now heaven help the soul that tries to take him away from lloyd. he's not above biting.
that's precisely why he doesn't bring it up with javier because,,, he really doesn't know what would happen if javier isn't on board with the plan. he's not selfish enough to make a decision like this for the both of them but he really doesn't think he can give the kid up anymore.
so he just. doesn't say anything. he continues with the routine they've made and hopes time will be enough to make javier fall for the child the same way lloyd did already.
and then this goes on for a couple weeks because these two are terrible and i love them for it. but this is like. not great. it actually kind of really sucks for them but also for the child
it all comes crashing down when the poor kid breaks down on them at some point because someone told him they were giving him away and, hey, turns out, not telling a child who's been left on the streets to survive by himself what's the plan for them because you're too busy worrying your partner won't be on board with keeping him is not a great idea! because he's gonna be lowkey fretting about what will happen to him and ultimately freak out at the slightest suggestion that he's being abandoned again! who would've thought!
they both immediately try to comfort him but they can't get to the bottom of his fears and actually give him reassurance because they don't know if they can promise him anything because they don't know what the other is thinking.
that is until they make eye contact in the middle of comforting him and it's one of those perfect moments where they're in total sync and can have entire conversations with just one look. and they realize how stupid they've been. because of course the other also wanted the same thing. of course they would want to give this child the very same thing they've received from their loved ones. how could've they ever doubted that.
after that is just really a matter of convincing the kid that of course they're not giving him away, he's staying right there with them, they can be his family now if that's what he wants. which isn't really hard because apart from this one communication issue they have actually been pretty good improvised parents to the squirt. and now that they know for sure they will be his parents forever, they try even harder to be better.
so that's how they adopt their first child.
i could go into detail about the rest of the kids are adopted but. that would make for an even longer post and this is already way more than i wanted to write askjhdkss
this is,,, really not what you asked for but it's what came out when i sat down to answer this ask, so like. i hope you still like it nonnie and i'm really sorry 〒▽〒

What if Kaveh's child became a talented sculptor/painter like in their teens? Say like 15 or so? Idk. That second part got me thinking so much abt them just tugging Kaveh by the arm to their next project like "OMG YOURE GONNA LOVE THIS ONE IM SO PROUD OF IT SPGUEJGEJLVWLHELHEJ"
artistic inclination.
summary. what if kaveh's child was artistically inclined?
trigger & content warnings. none applicable.
tropes, pairings, fic length, & other notes. fluff. adoptive dad!kaveh & reader. 0.5k words. they/them pronouns used for reader. this post is an expansion of what if kaveh adopted a child? author's thoughts. GOD YOURE SO RIGHT ANON I LOVE THIS IDEA ITS SO CUTE..... guys. i BEG of you. please send me asks like this. i adore when this happens. getting asks about any of my ongoing series is an absolute delight. requests are always always always welcome, but this kind of ask? this kind of ask is my favorite type fr <3
Tumblr media
kaveh's kid does absolutely end up being good with their hands, whether that's because of the time they spent with the forest rangers or simply because they lean in favor of artistic hobbies, and kaveh himself? he is overjoyed. the fact that [name], his [name], seems to have some inherent inclination towards the arts... archons. he loves that about them. it's like they were always meant to be his child.
he loves that his kid's first instinct is to run to him when they have a sort of creative breakthrough. he loves that their first instinct is to tug him by the arm and show him what they've made, even if there's still wet paint or clay on their hands because really, it's just a shirt. it can be washed. stains are just stains. he honestly understands on a very personal level; he gets paint all over himself, too. things happen.
it's worth it in the end, because he just loves them so dearly. their joy is his joy. their sorrow is his sorrow. their feelings are his. he resonates so deeply with the emotions of everyone around him, so you had better believe that his empathy increases tenfold for his own kid. he feels their feelings as if they were his own.
he understands their joy beyond the influence of his empathy, though. as an artist himself... he's so unbelievably honored that their first instinct is to share their work with him.
art is like a little window inside the artist's mind. the things they create give their father a deeper understanding of who they are, how they think, how they feel, why they think and feel that way. an artist sharing their work is an earnest display of vulnerability.
kaveh is so enamored with the way they are so willing, so eager to be vulnerable with him in such a sensitive way, especially in their teen years. he's heard a lot of things about raising teens; teens are supposed to be... difficult, aren't they? however, [name] just isn't difficult in the slightest.
...
well, children tend to be a reflection of the parent(s) they are raised by. [name] can be sassy and sarcastic, courtesy of tighnari and alhaitham's influence, but... they aren't difficult. they are kind and emotionally aware and warm and gentle.
overall, kaveh and his little co-parenting friend group did very well raising [name].
"baba, come look! i finished that project i was telling you about. it took me a while, but i finally did it!"
this happens multiple times on many different occasions, but kaveh's reaction never becomes any less enthusiastic. it doesn't matter what may be occupying his mind at that moment. he treasures their openness and could never so much as imagine disregarding their joy in moments like that. he always replies with a smile, wiping away a little bit of semi-wet paint that somehow ended up on their cheek.
kaveh only ends up smearing it more, but the gesture is sweet and appreciated nonetheless.
"ah, really?! i'm so proud of you. i know it can be hard sometimes. let me see what you've made this time."
please consider reblogging, it helps me out quite a lot!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You grow more excited as the clock nears midnight. “Only five more minutes, Kaeya!” You exclaim, tugging his hand and pointing at the clock. Your childhood best friend shakes his head, amused at your unusual excitement. “You’re really that excited just for your soulmate band? How funny. I mean, you’ve always been a soft romantic, so I’m not really surprised.” He chuckled, the sound filling your room. Both of you glance towards the golden band already present on Kaeya’s wrist, showing that he hadn’t met his soulmate yet. It had appeared, as it always does for everyone, on his 18th birthday.
None of you said it, none of you knew the other was thinking the same thing. But both of you wondered, if… If you two could possibly be each other’s soulmates.
Both of you had harboured feelings for each other since you were children. It was cute at first. But then as time passed, as you two started to notice each other more, grow up side by side, saw all sides of each other, that harmless puppy love started growing into ‘small’ crushes, even as you two were content to remain best friends. Best friends who were practically attached at the hip, frequently did sleepovers and study sessions, hung out a lot, and always took advantage of the couples discount system. Deep down, both of you wondered if you could ever be more.
The chance of Kaeya being your soulmate was a one in a thousand. So, what harm did it do to imagine the what-ifs of a nearly impossible situation, you both thought, allowing your minds to wander.
The thought of being Kaeya’s soulmate excited you. But it scared Kaeya.
It wouldn’t be easy to love you officially. It’s not because he couldn’t or didn’t want to. He had no idea what the future would bring, but for now, he really did love you, the way you did. But he was terrified what a relationship would bring, not just to you, but to any possible partner of his, which is why he wanted to avoid meeting his soulmate. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to maintain a relationship with his ways. And he was scared of his past.
Kaeya and his dad had fled from their home nation, Khaenriah, when it was on the brink of utter ruin because of the wars that had ravaged the world. Fled to Mondstadt, a stable country with abundant beauty, one that had already risen up after the war. There, his father had disappeared, leaving him with a caring adoptive family.
It had been hard for him to adjust and adapt to this new life, especially since he had just been a mere child when all this happened. And he wouldn’t have been able to, if not for you.
You were his neighbour- still are, in fact. He remembered when he’d timidly ventured out into the gardens of his new house a few days after his life had been uprooted. You had noticed him wandering alone very quickly from your own garden, tugging at your mom’s hand to point at him. He’d been scared then, but then you ran ever to him, eyes sparkling, asking him if he was new here, and if he wanted to play with them, adding that their family were very good friends with his new family.
That was the beginning of their friendship, the one that had led them here, staring at the clock at night, waiting for it to strike twelve. And Kaeya was scared, scared because he’d heard many rumours of whatever remained of the Khaenri’ans searching. Searching for what, he didn’t know. Maybe it wasn’t even real.
But he was still afraid of the possibilities.
And yet, a part of him wished to love you freely, without fear, be with you, be your soulmate.
The internal conflict was tearing him apart.
The clock struck twelve, signifying the start of your birthday.
You grinned excitedly, holding up your hand, on which a golden band had materialised. But then both your eyes widened, as it turned silver, before reshaping into a swirling silver pattern, almost like a bracelet, with a half heart in the middle.
The same happened to Kaeya’s band, the formerly gold band having changed into a silver bracelet, same as yours, with the other half of the heart.
It was confirmed- you two were soulmates.
You two stared at each other, eyes wide and confused. It was silent in the room for a while, as you two let the fact sink in.
I suppose it was to be expected, after all, you two had stuck with each other from the moment you met.
A part of you was incredibly happy, now that you didn’t have to hide your feelings any more. However, another part of you was worried for Kaeya and how he’d take this. I mean, what sort of best friends- soulmates- would you two be, if you didn’t know each others’ deepest fears? You knew what he was afraid of. And you didn’t blame him for it in any way whatsoever.
You were the first to speak up, gently taking both his hands in yours. Something you had done a thousand times before, and yet, it felt different this time. “You alright, Kaeya?”
He slowly nodded, eyes staring off. You understood his internal turmoil and the fact that he’d need time, and didn’t press him. “Do you need space?” you asked softly. “To process this? I don’t mind if you do.” Finally he looked at you. There were a multitude of emotions swirling in those beautiful periwinkle eyes of his- confusion, surprise, shock, fear, and more, as they met yours. “You won’t be upset?” He asked quietly. You shook your head almost immediately. “No, Kae, I won’t. I understand why.” You said reassuringly, squeezing his hands with yours to reaffirm your statement.
“I’ll see you later then..?Once I’ve sorted everything out?” “Sure, take as much time as you want, don’t rush, I’m always here for you, ‘kay? Now let me drop you off home.” You smiled at him.
The next evening, Kaeya texts you to meet him in your regular meeting spot- the swings in the park next to your houses. On text, he sounded like he’d made up his mind, causing you to be a bit nervous as you headed over, albeit a bit early.
You were just swinging gently, lost in your thoughts, when Kaeya walks up to you. He seems to be holding something behind his back, as you look at him curiously. “You alright now?” You question. “Yup.” he grinned back, that easygoing, charming smile that was reserved specifically for you back on his pretty face. “Got everything figured out now, and I have something for you too.” He smiles, bringing out the gift-wrapped package he had been holding behind his back. You chuckle, relieved, as you quickly open it. You stop short when you see what it is that he has given you.
“Forgot to say this, but happy birthday, [Y/N].” He said softly, bending down a bit to take the beautiful silver necklace that had your engraved to put it around your neck. “There.” he said, leaning back to admire you. “Now it matched with our bracelets.” He added, his words meaningful.
This was his way of giving you confirmation. “Let’s give this thing a try, huh? After all, if anything ever happens, I’ll be here to protect my beloved princess, won’t I?” He smirked at his successful attempt to make you flustered as he pulled you up from the swing, holding one of your hands gently in his.

the boxers coaching little mac
Ok, theoratically, if doc were to not be here he would need to be coached by someone else and uhh i forgot, this was very fun to do actually (this turned into a "what if Mac had the boxers as a father/brother figure")
Glass Joe
- has hope in Mac But is also very concerned about everything else, his school life, his health, where the hell his family is.. all that useless shmuck
- has to cover his eyes when Mac gets hit from concern but then acts like nothing happened, he totally doesnt care about this child who he sees as a son and would fight a crocodile for
- his advice is semi-useful but he cant speak in a motivating manner to save his life
- "When i was little, i got my ass kicked all the time, Mac, But with more time and work, i only get my ass kicked sometimes now"
- "was that supposed to be helpful or make me feel concerned about my future"
- outside of the ring, people mostly confuse Joe as a babysitter
- when Mac loses, Joe takes him to get some food to cheer him up, he cant speak in a motivating manner but damn he can comfort a man
- cheers like he saw his least favorite celebrity get cancelled when Mac gets a strong hit
Von Kaiser
- very stern & a bit cold with him and doesnt show affection since he thinks it would "distract him" (he doesnt know how to show affection) but will go out of his way for him
- very strict training schedule with him, if he wants to skip a day he'll ask mac if everything is alright (wow Kaiser's on some school counciler shit)
- to help him after losses, he usually gives Mac some headphones and gives him some space to calm down
- Really good at motivational speaking but terrible at comforting, completely clueless on what to do
- people always assume that Kaiser sees Mac only during training due to how cold he comes off to Mac
Disco Kid
- pretty loose with training, if they do training together he'll turn on some music and cheer him on, doesnt really mind if he wants to train alone or not
- wonderful motivational speaker, also good at comforting too
- people keep confusing them for adopted brothers
- to comfort him after losses, he'll give him a pep talk and it works 70% the time, the last 30% is him just crying harder
King Hippo
- overly concerned for him, if he doesnt want to train he'll just assume the worst and ask if he wants to talk, if he gets hit a little too hard he gasps like your grandma finding out you got a piercing and gets worried for him no matter how much he says its ok
- cant really motivate him well so he justs does a war cry and it works really well, they just communicate in movements & weird sounds sometimes, no better advice than "WHAGGHHHH"
- takes Mac out to get some comfort food to cheer him up after losses
- cooks for Mac to make sure he gets his proteins & eats his veggies, when he found out Mac had some troubles with getting enough nutrition he got to making him some food instantly
- Mac actually knows some basic hippo language from him
- people actually see Hippo as his brother, less like a trainer
Piston Hondo
-cold but tries to show affection since he doesnt wanna come off as too emotionless
- good motivational speaker, horrid comforter
- strict training schedule but a lot of meditation sessions & reading times as well, helping Mac with his education since he doesnt have much time to go to school
- gets some tea with Mac to help him calm down after losses
Bear Hugger
- good at giving advice along with comforting & motivation, the holy trio is complete with him
- they dont train much together, he mostly has ms bear train with him & watches over them to make sure no one gets too hasty
- goes fishing & gathering with Mac sometimes and lets him take out some energy he couldnt take out during matches & training
- goes walking in nature with Mac after losses and lets him punch a few trees
- most of his advice is just "PUNCH EM İN THE EYE!!"
Great Tiger
- training with Mac & teaching him some magic along the side, showing great care for his education since hes pretty concerned how hes gonna do math when he needs to
- uses his clones to demonstrate how to do moves since Mac is a visual learner, including movements, down to how he moves his arm and everything
- doesnt know how to comfort him so he just goes "There there" as hes in pieces
Don Flamenco
- giving Mac life advice knowing damn well his own is in shambles
- starts a crowd chant for Mac to cheer him on during rough matches
- gives him pep talks when he loses matches and chants for him
-not really a brother or a father figure, more like a uncle figure??
Aran Ryan
- making up the most devious cheating strategies specialized for Mac, at first Mac was kinda taken aback but after chugging 25 redbulls and a powerpoint presentation, aran convinced him
- "ok so we're putting needles covered in peanut butter in your gloves since the bastards allergic to nuts, we'll just throw jars of peanut butter at him if that doesnt work"
- "ok??"
- says some truly dumb shit to confuse Mac when hes sad and make him focus less on his loss when matches go bad
- "ya crying?"
- "yeah"
- "i thought your eyes were sweating"
Soda Popinski
- keeps him away from his soda (or does his best since macs a sneaky little boy) he has no clue why Mac is getting stronger and stronger this quickly and just assumes its him eating his veggies
- horrible at giving advice, down to the shitter with it
- "punch him!!"
- "what do you think ive been doing all this time"
- "punch him harder!!"
- horrible at comforting Mac after losses so he just offers him up some books he has lying around or offers to watch a movie with him
Bald Bull
- riles Mac up by going nuts for him in the corner, it helps him win matches, also totally unrelated: mac needs to get anger management
- "GO GET HIM!! BEAT HIM SO HARD HE CHANGES LANGUAGES!!"
- "yeah!!"
- cooks for mac since he doesnt get enough proteins, it started with him saying "dont expect this very often" But after seeing Mac live off pasta he took that statement back very quickly
- first time Mac called him dad he teared up on the spot
Super Macho Man
- both of them train on seperate times so the most he does is make sure he trains for the day
- bad at comforting and celebrating so he just takes him shopping, he won? Shopping, he lost? Shopping
- pretends to not care about him but would iron someones face if they spoke shit about him, thats HIS little punchy boy youre dissing
Mr Sandman
- comes off as cold but cares a lot deep down, he just doesnt know what to say to help him
- gives really detailed advice to mac that always works somehow
- "if you punch him on the forehead while he tries to jab you he'll fall to the ground and struggle for a while and not be able to recover, he'll also get up very slowly if he can since he has iron deficiency"
- "how do you know he has iron deficiency?? Are you his doctor or something??"
- gives some pep talks to him after tough matches, regardless if he won or not

Ok okay 😼 Marie when she realizes stein has a weapon child(basing off the last request and I think it’s obvious I see the mad scientist as a father 🫣🤭) and obviously how stein reaction to his child seeing Marie as a mom!
You can write it anytime! Take your time! Don’t rush anything and MAKE SURE TO STAY HYDRATED AND HEALTHY!🎆
thank you my dear!! I’m healthy and semi hydrated so I figured I met the conditions to write again lol
———————————————————————————
Marie with Stein’s Weapon Child
Tumblr media
-I think this goes without saying but Marie was aware of you long before she started teaching at the DWMA
-she’s a death sythe and Stein is one of the best meisters in the world, meaning your existence isn’t exactly hideabke so she would’ve heard about maybe even in brief passing
-wether she knew you were a weapon or not before she met you doesn’t make much of a difference
-you officially met Marie when she came to stay with you and your dad while they were working on defeating Ashura
-and safe to say she fell in love with you within minutes
-you were semi down to earth like Stein but you were so sweet and just overall doteable
-finding out you were a weapon just made you two all the closer
-you took a liking to her fairly immediately, seeing her as a motherly figure with your own mother gone
-the three of you would train together after school in weekends (Stein even wielding both of you at once one time)
-Marie would be delighted if your weapon form was similar to hers, but even if it wasn’t she would love you the same
-but when Marie finds out you can also fight by herself!!!???
-she’s ecstatic, so so so proud of you even if you aren’t her child
-she wants to make sure you’re safe and healthy first and foremost, she won’t let you overwork yourself one bit 😤😤😤
-is a little concerned that a teenager can figure out how to fight on their own and she can’t but it’s whatever lol
-you would probably also grow a strong connection with Crona from him being over to see Marie so often
(you would totally threaten Ragnarok when he’s being a little shit)
-when you’re in the classroom you and Marie try to act like you two aren’t attached at the hip (but it’s a wee bit obvious she has a slight favorite)
-no one in class holds it against you though and it doesn’t mean Marie doesn’t love her other students just as much
-now getting onto Stein
-this man is shutting bricks terrified
-he barely understands his own teenager, let alone a woman his own age
-you two have your own way of speaking and suddenly you’re style is changing and his house is changing
-the man cannot cope
-once he gets over the first few weeks of “wtf is going on”, he settles in really nicely
-Stein may not say it but he really appreciates the relationship you and Marie have because sometimes he feels he is lacking as a parent in the emotional capacity
-he won’t admit it but he loves how much you two get along, it feels like he has his own small family, it makes his heart all fuzzy
-and when you start to notice that Stein likes Marie you are pushing it SO hard
-i mean accidentally “forgetting” something in Stein’s room so Marie goes to get it while Stein is sleeping
-slipping both of them gifts and pretending it’s from the other
-trying to get Stein to just freaking admit he like Marie
-and when they get together you’re happy as a clam, within a few months of the two of them dating, you start calling Marie ‘mom’
-she started bawling the first time you did, and from then on you three are an actual family
-if and when Stein and Marie get married she legally adopts you
-you three are an unstoppable team of badasses, especially when all three of you resonate
-the only problem is Marie trying to figure out how to tell you both the family is about to go from the terrifying three to the fearsome four….
-———————————————————————————
that’s all my dears!
I hope you thoroughly enjoyed
and per usual I am here solely for your literary pleasure

ANOTHER FUCKING GAME AU BITCHES!!!!!
Or maybe not game but you get the idea, or don't. That works too.
Anyways.
Inspired by: These songs
Now stay with me, is this well thought out? NO!
But come along for the ride anyway!
Anyways.
So, Danny is mad bored and because he's mad bored it inevitably ends up both Sam and Tucker's problem. Not even DOOM can cure Danny's boredom surprisngly.
Meanwhile in the ghost zone:
Pariah Dark, taking out a tray of ecto-cookies in a kiss the cook apron with a tone of skulls on the design: My father senses are tickling.
Which leads to him just showing up out of bloody nowhere and dragging Danny + his friends off into the zone when he finds out Danny's bored as shit.
Pariah Dark: Wait for the cookies to cool, just got out the oven.
He says before going around to rummage in his treasury because he's sure he has at least something in there to stave off his adopted son's bordom.
If his countless priceless artifacts can't even do this, what's the use of keeping them?
A few minutes later as Danny is eating the surprisingly hella good cookies (Which is weird considered that his adopted dad was like, asleep for eons or whatever). Pariah walks back out with a very big, like big enough to touch the floor on him, cape.
He's happy to see Danny enjoying his cooking (Yes, he can cook Pandora nobody is going to almost die for a second time this time he got better and that was literally eons ago stop bringing that up-), but then gets on to what this cape is all about.
He got it about, a century after his coronation by an unnamed ghost, it quite literally just showed up in his castle one day with little to no explanation and he just went with it. Although he didn't use it much, he knows it has some amount of cosmic power in it, doesn't know what it does but its there.
He does know that its 100% safe though.
At least to beings of their level of power.
Though it might have some kind of effects on the regular living if exposed to for a long period of time. Probably, maybe.
He doesn't know, doesn't care.
So, he just drops it on Danny and takes a moment to see how he's just engulfed by the thing, before giving a hum in consideration and snapping his fingers, the thing shrinks but enough for Danny to actually be able to put it on, but still dragging a good distance of the floor behind him.
The cloak's outer appearance is a brilliant glowing white, while the inside looks as if space itself was woven within it.
When Danny put it on, it just felt, right. He couldn't explain it, but it just felt like it was always meant to end up in his hands. No matter if it looked like a toddler wearing his dad's clothes, he's willing to look past that.
Then he just, takes Danny to a very dead vat of space and tells him to have fun (Nothing there should be capable of harming Danny since he made sure of that even before having a child). Like, there's quite literally nothing there and Danny doesn't know what to do.
So, he just fucks around and finds out.
At least the cloak floats behind him as he flies around and looks really cool in space.
Meanwhile Sam and Tucker are just there, left behind, standing around with Pariah Dark. Waiting for Danny to come back.
....
......
Sam: Hey what if you-
Pariah: No.
Sam: I know magic...?
Pariah: Considering hum
Tucker: I have a scepter that can warp reality that was owned by my probably great ancestor.
Pariah: Considering hum increases in intensity
He ends up throwing them in there to, well, after Tucker got the scepter, reality manipulation to allow them to breath in space as a treat (And also for a semi-logic way for them to not die in space).
Danny fucked around and found out he can apparently make stars now.
The three then work together to create an entire solar system.
Danny, making the stars and then the motherfucking sun (with help from Pariah Dark).
Tucker, using his powers to make what is basically the rough drafts of various planets. I.e. just giant rocks. Then carefully using his powers tweak at their designs and make them actually bloody planets.
Sam? Sam just takes a look at one planet and goes: Yea, this would make a great earth.
And proceeded to make earth.
Like no shit, she just filled that shit with her magic and carefully created a working ecosystem and then the planet just, lived.
Is Sam's new world populated? Hahaha, no. Well technically it is, but really only by her and the other two on occasion.
Basically just one gigantic oversized garden.
Tucker set up a base on one of the moons (the one near Sam's planet) and somehow managed to get himself some wifi???? No one knows how he did it, and they aren't going to sit through his explanation.
Danny? Danny's just chilling bro. Most of the time he just kicks back and relaxes in the void of space, occasionally drifting past worlds and stars and sometimes sleeping too.
Basically, just one very big playground for the trio. Sam taking care of her planet garden, Tucker making the entire moon into his personal tech base, and Danny just drifting around in space doing spacing (hehe) out or sleeping.
Me: Oh? What is this? Is that a Dc content over there?
Dc content: rolls
Me: No Dc content! Don't roll into my Dp ideaaaa!!
Dc Content: Rolls into Dp idea
Me: Noooooooo.
Cut forward awhile in time and then a supervillain accidently pulls up into the trio's playground while running from the Justice League, accidently knocks into this random glowing thing in space and then escaped, Danny meanwhile gets rudely awakened and is so surprised the area around him gets enveloped with ice that the Justice League just has to, kinda, move above, below or around.
Which gave the villain good enough time to run.
Then that villain wandered too close to Tucker's moon base and almost got shot to death (Tucker why the fuck do you have space weaponry!?!??!) and then had to make a hasty landing on the nearby planet.
Which is what he wanted so like yea ok.
Same thing happened to the Justice League.
So now both the Supervillain and the Justice League have to navigate Sam's planet. Not knowing that they rudely (in the supervillains case) woke up the prince of the dead and alerted Tucker's moon base.
