Enter Merla: Queen of Darkness!!! 🖤✨

I was pretty disappointed when VLD didn't explore the culture and politics of the Galra Empire more, especially after Lotor took the throne, and I was also quite disappointed with Merla's cameo. So I decided to take a crack at her design myself! Some backstory below!!

I made her Acxa's twin sister because while I don't believe it was confirmed, I always thought that 80's Merla's character must have been divided into the four women who became Lotor's generals in VLD, so why not make Merla and Acxa related? Plus in every piece of fiction you need to have at least one set of twins ;) That's just da rules babeyy~

Acxa and Merla are from Planet Drule (a loyal territory of the Galra Empire) and are half-Galra and half-Drule. They are not of royal descent, and since they were children they were looked down on because they are half-breeds. As the oldest, Acxa takes on the responsibility of looking after Merla, who over the years begins to grow restless with the two of them settling for low-ranking positions in the army and living a less than satisfying life.

One day exiled Prince Lotor comes to oversee the planet just as Merla is planning a coup to overthrow the corrupt Drule king. The coup fails, and wanting to protect her sister, Acxa takes the blame even though she had nothing to do with it. When she is sentenced to death, Lotor, seeing the potential and skill Acxa possesses, offers to pardon her in exchange for her loyalty to him, thus saving her life (it is my personal headcanon that Acxa is the first of the generals to be recruited). She accepts and tries to convince Merla to come with her, but Merla refuses and insists on staying, saying that she wants to change things on Drule, and that by leaving Acxa is abandoning her. The two part ways on bad terms, and do not see each other for many years.

Merla eventually succeeds in taking the throne, her followers assassinate the king, and she becomes queen of Drule. She and Acxa have the occasional run-in, which is how Lotor and the other generals get to know her more. There is still lingering resentment between the two sisters, however, particularly on Merla's part. The events of VLD proceed as normal up until the end of season 5, and I personally would like to take out Lotor killing Narti and the generals turning against him. Now emperor, Lotor works tirelessly to unite his people and deal with the growing Galra factions which plot to rise up against him.

News of Lotor's ascent to the throne spreads throughout the universe, and soon Queen Merla is paying a visit to the Empire and demanding an audience with him. She knows all about the Galra factions, including Sendak's Fire of Purification, and proposes that she and Lotor marry in order to combine the forces of both the Galra Empire and Planet Drule. If Lotor accepts, the two nations will become stronger than ever and no one will dare stand against them. If he refuses, Merla will merely seek support from the factions, perhaps even form an alliance with Sendak, who will eventually try to take the Galra throne himself.

What can this mean for not only the Galra Empire, but for Voltron and the Coalition as well?? What can this mean for Lotor and Allura's developing relationship??? For those who haven't seen the 80's show, Queen Merla debuts in the US-made 2nd season. She and Lotor are actually engaged for a time! Merla is cold, cunning, and calculating like Lotor, and perhaps even a little more manipulative. She enjoys being entertained and can on occasion be condescending.

And this is not meant to create any unnecessary love triangle between Merla, Lotor, and Allura. While Merla has people in her life she cares for and she respects Lotor, her first priority is maintaining her seat on the throne and looking after her people, so she really only sees Lotor as a means to gain more power. Lotor recognizes this, because he mostly shares the same mindset as her and can see the benefits of marrying her, regardless of his own feelings. And how does Allura feel about this whole matter?? 👀 Only time will tell, though it is also likely that the princess may be too proud to ever reveal how she truly feels. At the end of the day, I just think it would be fascinating to explore more of the politics of the VLD universe and the complications that come with ruling an entire empire whilst trying to keep alliances and territories intact. Plus it would make for some fun drama! Particularly in the romance category hehe.

Exe's Current WIP and Requests Queue 📝💕!!

Hiya everyone evsgshe 💕! I hope all of you have been well 🥰~

I wanted to share what I have in the works right now and also what I have planned ahead aaaa 🤔!

Firstly, what I'm working on currently is this request for Jaye 🥺!! I haven't written for him since my Valentine's Day event, and he was v fun to write for aaaa 🙏 so I'm happy to do it again!

I'm Exe after all, so of course I've been really hoping for an opportunity to write for Executor the Ex Foedere...😖💞!

I have a few ideas of my own for pieces I could write for 'Rico's alternate, but you guys always have v creative ideas sbsjsh so I'm also waiting on more requests for him from anyone who's willing 🙏🥺!!:

As to answer your question - I don't know if I'll write an actual part 2 for the fic (And if I do, I'll probably have to wait for at least Season 2 or so, to get more relevant plot)

However, I can answer your punctual question, and any other thing you'd like to ask about it! (In DMs also, if you feel more comfortable that way ^^)

So, to the question "Would Husk and Reade tell everyone about their relationship?" - They kinda already know.

Alastor brought Reader to the Hotel and was the one to tell her of Husk's existence and position as his vassal/Hazbin's bartender. Angeldust knows the story, and being Husk's friend, he'll easily realise the correlation between Reader having all characteristics mentioned, and Husk's sudden radiance and bliss. That, and Husk will trail around Reader's pretty dress 24/7.

Charlie and Veggie would realise immediately, as soon as Reader's hand is hooked to his arm, and she makes him laugh. They can spot a couple from a mile away, and though Charlie would most likely be the type to throw a celebration party, Vaggie would calm her down immediately and things are fine.

That only leaves Sir Pentious, who silently gushes over how cute they are, and would start asking them for advice, to court Cherry also (and succeed)... And Nifty is just Nifty haha.

Second question is - "Would reader stay at the hotel even if she is an overlord?" and the question is - Sometimes. Basically, she would stay where Husk wants to stay. She has her own pretty home, in a rather chill and safe neighbourhood, but the Hotel has Husk's friends, and socialising is important. However, she hates Heaven and doesn't want to ascend - In that regard, she's terrified Husk would become an Angel, and they'd be separated again. On another note, dates at Reader's home are the sweetest and most romantic~ <3

The Third and final question is - "Would she involve herself in the fight now?" and the answer is - HELL YES. She died a violent death, she is spiteful and bitter on life and on death, and most of all, she is angry at Heaven for denying her, over a measly thing as having a high self esteem and loving herself and life above the limits. If possible, if any being threatened her, her love, her new idyllic life and her friends, she will go livid. Though she hates how abominable she looks, like a monster - She would not hesitate, a single second, to rip their wings apart and bite their throats off. She almost hated how she enjoyed carnage like Alastor did - It must be that she got desensitised to the horrors of Hell, and how meaningless life is, since they can just respawn, but she is driven by love and hatred. Her only crutch, for a long time, was Rosie, who gently introduced her to the madness of Hell, and their new life; She taught her how to continue her human life fashion and elegance, while also protecting herself and navigating the machinations of deals and raising above all those lesser than her. Consequently, after Husk was kicked out of the Overlord seat, it was her who took his place, recommended by both Alastor and Rosie. Needless to say, most of the others were pleased to have someone mentally stable and with no vices that could ruin the meetings or deals.

Chapter Four:

I remember that this was the chapter I started reading the book again. It was a Friday and I had actually stolen this book from someone else's hold, so I knew that I had to finish it soon before they missed it. So, I sat in my 8th grade homeroom and started reading.

Cinda did such a good job of showing us just how different Han and Raisa's lives were with the smallest of sentences. Like, Magret telling Raisa that her old clothes being sent to Ragmarket being equivalent to being thrown away to her, meanwhile that's how most people Han knows get clothes.

HOLY CRAP THEY GOT IT RIGHT 😭

Just giggling at Raisa looking over her room, knowing that it actually was Hanalea's old rooms.

Micah being the first to bring up that the story of the Demon King isn't totally accurate is hilarious since the breaking was actually caused by his ancestors, not Han's. (Also, Raisa's reaction to him asking questions compared to Han telling her a completely different story that she's always known makes my heart fluttery)

Raisa has always been the smartest in the room, and I love that for her, but it also makes me sad for her

My note for the first mention of Vega is literally just "fufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufu--"

Chapter Five:

I have a very distinct memory of reading this part the first time. I had just got home that Friday, and was prepared to finish this by the end of the weekend. I locked myself in my family's living room and read this, even tho i didn't understand like half of the lore surrounding it.

That being said, this book is way more enjoyable now that I understand the lore about the demon king and the wars and the other realms.

I've been thinking for a while after reading Mika's character story about Capitano's eyes.. You know in lazzo trailer, we can't see anything on his face except just a black void. Meanwhile in Mika's character story, his eyes glows which intimidate everyone when there's a confrontation between the Fatui and Varka's expedition team.

idk why but i feel like Capitano can make his eyes blaze with intimidating aura at his will? 🤔 (also, the fact that he didn't do that in lazzo trailer really shows how respectful he is towards his fellow comrades even though a lot of them are always mocking and bad mouthing each other except Pierro lol 😂)

I really want Capitano so badly 😭🙏 why he is so cool and mysterious.. I really can't get enough of him 😔 I'm already at 210+ intertwined fate now and still saving (thank u Mi/Hoyoverse for that free IFs in adventurer's hand book 🛐), i really hope that when his banner finally arrived, i can get him to C6R5 🛐💞

That would be super cool! 🥺 I feel like he is a guy who avoids battle if possible, since he's respectful and all, so he just kinda. Intimidates others to back down. He's just a respectful guy in general, the first Harbinger probably can't be disrespectful to his comrades, all the npcs talk about his rep lol (I also think they didn't make his eyes blaze in the trailer because we'd never get over it. Okay and imagine- you have no idea what your husband's face looks like much less his eyes *arranged marriage sneak here* and then boom. One day he gets super overprotective of you become someone kept bothering you and all of a sudden you look up and see his piercing blue eyes... help me🙏 and then the angst of him avoiding you because he's scared about what you think of him now🙏 my English is probably bad rn but... i gotta get this out NOW)

Omg I can either think about florist! reader from Mondstadt or Snezhnaya. Mondstadt would be cute because everyone there is pretty into flowers and stuff, there's even that flower shop at the gates, plus they'd definitely appreciate the flower love language the most 💗🛐 Meanwhile with Snezhnayan reader, he'd be intrigued at how dedicated you are to keeping these fragile lifeforms healthy in such perilous weather. Either way, you're giving me the picture of reader and Capitano basking in a flower field😔 (Imagine Capitano giving advice to his recruits about what flowers to give their lovers, they're so shook but their admiration soars through the roof)

omg hi hello yay this is so exciting for me okay here are some nonfiction recommendations!!! most of these are pretty accessible even if u aren't super familiar with reading theory + i've noted the ones that are a little more dense or might require some more background knowledge before jumping in:

The Invention of Heterosexuality by Jonathan Ned Katz. Literally what the title says - Katz traces the historical invention of the word "heterosexuality" along with how its meaning has changed over time, bringing into focus just how recent our modern social constructions of sexuality are. You can also find a condensed article version if you don't want to read an entire book--same title and everything.

Screw Consent: A Better Politics of Sexual Justice by Joseph Fischel. I just finished this book recently and loved it, but it's not something I would recommend engaging with if you don't already have some like...groundwork for engaging with feminist and queer theory. Like it is very much not a beginner text but the work it's doing is so so important in addressing a lot of the issues with our post #MeToo cultural rhetoric and politics when it comes to discussing rape culture and sexual violence.

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde. Personally I simply think everyone should read some Lorde at some point in their lives.

Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldúa. Because I also think everyone should read some Anzaldúa at some point in their lives.

Women, Race & Class by Angela Davis. Another essential feminist text.

Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis. Highly highly highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about prison abolition (specifically within a U.S. context).

The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale. This goes hand in hand with the Angela Davis listed above and is a pretty straightforward breakdown of why police are unnecessary and some possibilities of what a society without them (or defunding them) could look like (again, within a U.S. context).

+ some bonus recs that are a little more niche:

Regarding the Pain of Others by Susan Sontag. This book dives into the ethics of like...trauma + photography but honestly a lot of the points Sontag makes feel very relevant beyond that context considering the world we live in where pretty much everything gets uploaded online.

No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive by Lee Edelman. This is perhaps the single most influential work of theory i've come across in my life on just like...a personal level. Like Edelman's theory of reproductive futurity is burned forever in my brain and fundamentally altered my worldview. That being said this book is NOT FUN to read and it is incredibly dense. I had to return to it many times and discuss it at length with the professor who was teaching it to me before I finally started to grasp it, and then it was literally like my eyes had been opened and could never be shut again. so! i feel compelled to include it in any nonfiction recommendation list, but i definitely recommend going in with some groundwork already laid when it comes to ur engagement with queer theory.

Men, Women, and Chainsaws by Carol J. Clover. Simply a quintessential text for anyone interested in feminism + horror, which i very much am.

Zombies and Sexuality: Essays on Desire and the Living Dead ed. by Shaka McGlotten and Steve Jones. This book is soooo fucking fun i absolutely love zombie theory. some of the essays are denser than others so it's probably best to go in once you already have some background engaging w queer + feminist theory. my favorite chapters were "Take, Eat, These Are My Brains: Queer Zombie Jesus"; "A Love Worth Un-Undying For: Neoliberalism and Queered Sexuality in Warm Bodies"; and "Re-Animating the Social Order: Zombies and Queer Failure".

+ my current nonfiction read:

Texts after Terror: Rape, Sexual Violence, and the Hebrew Bible by Rhiannon Graybill. Look even if you've never touched the bible in your life my favorite thing about this book is the way Graybill questions our frameworks for discussing sexual violence and proposes new ones that better account for the gray area that is so often (and so problematically) scrubbed out by the cultural emphasis on consent. This text engages with the Fischel book I mentioned above, it's just that Graybill's trying to add more nuance into our discussions of rape culture specifically in her area of expertise, which happens to be the Hebrew bible. This is another one where I'd recommend some groundwork in feminist and queer theory before jumping in though :)

The Demon King Chapters 1-2

Chapter One:

I almost forgot how confusing reading the first few chapters of this book were when I first read it. There is no exposition and very little lore outside of what's on the back cover. That being said, it's infinitely more interesting to read going into it with knowledge.

F Han's mom. IDC if you thought he was a demon or not, don't hurt my son like that (yes, i'm claiming him as my own bc you don't deserve him)!

That being said, f Elena for telling Han's mom that she had a demon baby in the first place!

This joke is so much funnier knowing what maiden’s weed is. Really makes you wonder how many kids were running around Rag Market thanks to Han’s fraud 😭

The excitement that just came through me when Han explained the position of High Wizard for the first time 🤭

"Like anything forbidden, wizards fascinated Han" i literally can't stop giggling, like it feels like i'm looking at a baby that can barely talk yet, and is one day gonna be this whole grown up person.

Ew, first Micah mention :(

Micah wincing when he sees Dancer because he recognizes the Bayar in him 😖 this just makes me feel even worse for willo, like my poor baby girl.

Han thinking of the clans as his first real home

Chapter Two:

Only on the first page, and Raisa is a bit of a demon isn't she? like, don't get wrong, everyone deserves it, and i support women's wrongs, but DAMN girl. ofc, i then remember what i was like at 15, and i'm like, okay. i get it.

also, FUCK GAVAN BAYAR! he hasn't done anything yet, but he still sucks!

Some people grow out of how they were at 13. And then, there's Mellony.

The Raisa and Micah relationship 🤢 at least my opinion on that hasn't changed in the last 5 years.

Also, I remember when I first read this book I think this was the point when I closed it, put it in my backpack, and didn't touch it again for another week. That is how much we all hate whatever tf the Raisa/Micah ship name is.

Amon's dad is a breath of fresh air this chapter, ngl

"When I'm queen, I'm going to keep my friends close by." AND YOU DID, BABY!!!

Raisa calling her mother "Mama" made me sad :( Then I realized that that might've been what Hana, Ash, and Lyss called Raisa and I got even sadder

Micah, you fucking liar. I HATE YOU

Raisa just thinking that wizard father's are just cruel, not realizing that Gavan used Micah bc he knew that HE HAD STARTED THE FIRE!

like, i hate gavan bayar, and i will ALWAYS hate gavan bayar, but at least he managed to put Micah in his place BH (Before Han)
