I am now curious about the ocean that's never been posted before, what's his deal?
(Post in question)
AAAA I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE INTERESTED!! :DD His name is Casey! He's an old madness combat OC that I made, along with 5 others! (Although I only drew references for 4-)
Tumblr media
Now I made these guys without really knowing anything about Madness combat.. I just made some OCs with the little scraps of knowledge I had because all my friends had Madness OCs and I wanted to be cool like them.. 🥺
Now his story if I can remember is..
Its along the lines of he was this guy that lived in the Nevada wasteland. And he traveled around in this huge dump truck turned killing machine with two of his friends. At some point they were in a building trying to get diesel..? And there was a fire..? The truck was stolen by this gang and his two friends died in the fire.. Casey had just lost everything, he was of course devastated.. for a few years after he just wandered the wastelands.. just barely surviving.
Eventually, he found the gang that stole his truck. So in a blind rage he went into their camp and murdered everyone. But his truck was no where to be found.. Instead he found this kid tied to a tree waiting to be executed. "Stefany". He ends up cutting her lose and suddenly he has adoption papers in his hands. Weird-
They travel around together and eventually they meet this scientist guy that got separated from his group. I think I did a thing where the people that live in the wasteland hate scientists or something..?? And Eric was like "Please don't kill me I just want to go back to my group!" And Casey said somethin like- "Ok I'll take you back only if you give us this lab thingy when we get there." And Eric agreed.
So they go on this whole found family adventure and by the time they get to the lab Eric had really bonded with these people. He wasn't intending to actually keep his promise but because he really likes Casey and Stef, he kept his word. He steals the lab thingy but gets caught. Casey and Stef save him and peridot style he becomes a wastelander-
Now after a while of traveling around, naturally, Casey gets hurt somehow. He's messed up pretty bad so he's just camping out somewhere while Stef and Eric go look for food. While Stef is out looking for food, unbelievably.. she spots Casey's truck. She's never seen it before but Casey talked about what it looked like and how to break into it.
So she goes after the truck, uses the secret hijack method and kicks the two thieves out of the cab. She hightails it back to their camp to show Casey. But those two thieves follow her. When she gets back there's a stand off between Casey's group and the thieves. When suddenly,
"..Casey? Is that you?"
Turns out his two friends didn't die in the fire. And they had found the gang before Casey did and stole the truck back. Which is why it wasn't at the gangs camp. They talked about the fire.. Casey thought his friends had died, and his friends thought Casey had died. T'was but a silly misunderstanding.
So in the end all of them become a team and start traveling around in the big dump truck together.
I haven't brought the story beyond that, and a lot of it doesn't fit with actual madness combat lore.. 😅 But its all I've got!

YOU WERE PLACING CRAYONS ON EACH DESK DESK AS YOU WERE WAITING FOR YOUR STUDENTS TO RETURN FOR LUNCH. You heard a knock on your classroom door, you hope one of your students didn’t eat something that upset their stomachs again. Your students had the thing where they would do anything to attempt to have lunch with you. From pretending to have tummy aches to begging you to come to spend lunch with them. You walked over to the door and opened it and when you saw Geto and Gojo, your eyes bulged out of your head.
“We had to drop off the snacks for you,” Gojo held up the bag full of different snacks they brought from the grocery store.
You noticed that both of them were dressed in suits. They must have taken the time out of their busy schedules to make sure their end of the deal was fulfilled. You smiled at the two of them taking the bag out of their hands. “So glad you guys came before my little ones returned from lunch. They would have lost their mind if they saw all these snacks.” You said.
“We had to make sure they got their snacks, so we agreed to stop by,” Geto explained, placing the bag he was holding on your desk.
“Have you been on social media lately?” Gojo asked as he took it upon himself to sit at the seat behind your desk.
“No, I don’t really get on it like that.” You admitted. “Social media makes everyone act like they’re above one another, you know?” You questioned.
Both Geto and Gojo shared a look, especially considering that they were verified users on all platforms across. From Twitter to Instagram, the duo had quite a following. “Or have you watched any talk shows these past couple of days?” Gojo asked.
“I mean, no. I have been busy with work and then also updating Shoko on what happened at the ball. You should have seen her face when I told her I got Naoya Zenin’s number and don’t plan on using it,” You carelessly shrug as you went back to placing crayons on each table for your students.
“Y/N, you’re the talk of the fuckin’ city and you don’t know that,” Geto said out loud before he passed you his phone.
When you saw article after article about the woman in the red mask, your body went into complete shock. You couldn’t believe that these many people were interested in knowing who you were. They most likely assumed you were an actress, higher education professor, or influencer, but here you were getting prepared to possibly wipe snot off someone's kid's face. “I didn’t think it was that serious. For all of that, I should have just lost the game.”
“It’s a little too late for that,” Gojo popped a lollipop from the bag of candy he brought in his mouth. “Naoya called me asking for your name and I told him no. It wouldn’t shock me that he’ll pay top-notch money just to find out who you are,” Gojo shrugged.
“Do you think I should text him? You know make a subtle joke about the situation,” You asked.
“Hell no,” Geto answered quickly. “He expects women to come to him first. Just let him come to you. His family owns over one hundred luxury hotels in the world, he’ll find you for sure. Perhaps, it’ll make this whole situation even more romantic.” Geto chuckled.
“I am not fit for the lifestyle you guys live. I love my normal life teaching little kids and going home to the comfort of my home to binge-watch some drama tv show,” You whined. “This is all your fault.” Your eyes glared at Gojo who was fishing through the candy bag.
“Me? I didn’t even do anything,” Gojo said while placing his hand on his chest in complete shock.
“You just had to choose Naoya Zenin for me to flirt with,” You said out loud. “Through all the men in the room.”
“Regardless of who I chose, it would be the same circumstances considering the number of bachelors that were at the ball. Kento probably would have had you in Malaysia right now. But Naoya is just the messiest option because he’s a messy person.” Gojo explained.
“That Fei woman is like his on and off again fling. They’ve known each other since they were younger, and many people in the city expected them to be married by now. Sadly that didn’t happen.”  Geto explained.
“I would feel bad for practically stealing the attention of Naoya from her, but she was so rude.” You uttered.
“Which she shouldn’t be considering that she isn’t even the first heir to her family company,” Gojo bluntly admitted. He glanced at his watch before sighing, “We should get going though. The office will be begging for me to return.”
You placed the bucket of crayons down, “I have to stop in the main office to collect something from my mailbox, so I’ll walk with you guys.”
The walk towards the main office was filled with low chatter in the school halls. You got to know Geto and Gojo a little more and you were grateful to be able to have them to lean upon when Japan finally figured out who you were. You weren’t ready to be pushed into the limelight, but you had a feeling it was coming sooner than you thought. You waved at them as they were exiting the building and you finally stepped into the office. The secretary Mula's eyes got wide. Mula was a year younger than you and you genuinely thought she was one of the kindest people you’ve met while teaching at the school. You smiled at her before waltzing over to the mailboxes for each teacher and staff member in the school. You picked up the papers that were neatly put into your mail space and heard Mula clear her throat to gain your attention. You glanced at her as she motioned to the seats that were in the office for people who were waiting for something and when your eyes finally met with those brown ones, you nearly dropped all the papers in your hand.
There Naoya Zenin sat with a bouquet of red roses on his lap. It felt like time stopped for a moment. You felt stuck while clutching onto the papers that were in your hands so tightly. You watch him smirk at your reaction before he stood up to walk toward you. It was quite odd seeing him in casual clothing from the expensive suit he sported at the masquerade ball. His blue button-down shirt and light khaki-colored bottoms went well with the demeanor he was trying to pursue. You assumed that he didn’t want to get dressed in his usual suit and tie attire to draw too much attention to himself as he wandered the school halls. “It’s really wonderful being able to finally put a name to the face. So, let me properly introduce myself, I’m Naoya Zenin.”
“I am well aware of who you are, more confused on why you’re here.” You took a step forward not wanting your business to be displayed in the office, but you surely weren’t taking him outside to talk. Paparazzi probably was waiting to snap pictures of Naoya. “Actually, let us have this talk in my class. Please follow me Mr. Zenin.” You professionally said through gritted teeth.
“Should I tell another teacher to bring your children from lunch?” Mula asked.
“Yes, thank you.” You said while dragging Naoya by the arm outside the office.
The walk to your classroom was filled with silence. You didn’t want any teachers passing by to hear the conversation, they already were glancing at Naoya with complete shock as is. When you entered the classroom, you closed the door right after he stepped in. You watched as he took in his surroundings.
“When Gojo mentioned you had a teaching job, I thought you were a professor,” Naoya admitted as he let his fingertips drag alongside your desk that was filled with many small gifts from students.
“No, just a regular English teacher who teaches five-year-olds,” You admitted. “What are you doing here?”
“What do you think I’m doing here?” Naoya asked. His head cop to the side in a manner that caused you to roll your eyes.
“When a woman doesn't text you after getting your number, you do know you aren't supposed to go hunt for them and go on live television asking for a manhunt for her,” You said. “That isn’t quite romantic.”
“I find it very romantic,” Naoya comfortably sat down behind your desk. “You’re not understanding how you’ve been running laps around my mind since that night. I just can’t describe the feeling, but you’re different from the usual flings I have had.”
“I’m not a fling. Another thing it was just a game that I made up so the others and I could cure our boredom at the ball.” You stepped forward firmly placed your hands on the desk and leaned forward. “I have no desire to fall in love with you, Naoya.”
“Just give me one date, just one.” He says. “If you go through with the date and hate it, I won’t bother you again. But if you do enjoy yourself, just please give me a chance.” Naoya says as his brown eyes soften while glancing up at you from the seat behind the desk.
You always wondered if any other women got this side of him. Begging for a date while holding a bouquet of roses. “Fine, one date! But I don’t want no one in our business, so it better be as secretive as it could get.” You told him.
Naoya opened up to speak but was interrupted by the sound of children running in high on the energy of the food they consumed. When they saw you and Naoya, you could hear the wave of “ohhhhh’s” from them. Some even playfully make jokes only they would understand. “Is this your husband L/N-Sensei?” One student curiously asked.
“Settle down class, please take your seats. Two of my lovely friends dropped off some amazing treats for me to give you guys at the end of the day.” You cheerfully said as your crowd erupted in cheers.
“But you must be on your best behavior while this gentleman reads you the afternoon book of the day? He’ll be reading one of my favorite books.” You glanced over at Naoya whose face went completely red.
You smirked in his direction. He actually thought he was getting a date with you that easy. You walked towards the bookcase searching for the book. “Everyone please go to the carpet so Mr. Zenin can read to you guys. No pushing each other, okay?”
You could hear the sound of little feet rushing to the carpet quickly. You went back to searching for the book and you soon felt the presence of Naoya next to you. “Making me work for the date, huh?” He whispered into your ear.
“Mhm, dates with me can’t be bought with a fancy bouquet of roses and gifts. You have to work for your time with me.” You said as you pulled A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon out for Naoya to read.
Naoya collected the book from your hand, his fingertips lightly brushing against yours sending a warm wave to tumble down your spine. You motioned him to go sit at the back of the classroom where the students were waiting patiently. In the front of the rug was the chair where you usually sat to dramatically tell the story. “They like when you add animated sounds and voices, by the way, it helps their adorable imaginations grow.” You gave him a cheeky grin.
You watched as he swallowed a huge lump that formed in his throat before walking over to the students. Your students weren’t that intimidating, they just all had very curious minds. They weren’t afraid to challenge someone with a rhetorical question that would have their small minds thinking. So, you were sure that they weren’t going to eat Naoya alive up there—just make him sweat a bit. Especially when it was a person that knew their lovely teacher.
You would let him start reading the book so you could place a coloring worksheet on each table. As Naoya's lips parted to start reading the book, a hand shot up waiting to be picked. Naoya glanced up from the book in a pure panic to look at you and your face holding back laughter. You saw a question from one of your students was coming. You extended your hand indicating that he could answer whatever question your student had.
“Uh—yes?” Naoya said and you watch as the student would glance back at you and then at Naoya.
“Are you two together like that princess book L/N-Sensei read to us yesterday?” The kid asked.
“You don’t have to answer that. It’s an extremely inappropriate question to ask during story time,” You said out loud gaining the attention of your student who was a giggling mess.
But Naoya didn’t back down from the little kid’s curious question. He closed the book he was holding briefly, before speaking once again. “Did the prince and princess have a happily ever after at the end?” He asked as he glanced around the students sitting down for an answer.
“Yes.” It seems they said in unison.
“Then I hope in the near future we do end up like the princess and prince in the book.” He flashed a kind smile and you wanted to facepalm yourself as your students gush at his response.
They were supposed to have your back, not let this guy charm them with that grin. You continued doing what you were doing as Naoya was reading the book to them. Even taking your tips to add different fun voices as the narrator to gain faint laughs from your students. You sat at your desk watching him read and you couldn’t help but let a smile sneak onto your face.
It was one thing that made your heart feel warm and that was seeing each of your students smile and be happy. Naoya surely was working for that date. Each word Naoya articulates, he expressed with such a foolish fine. It was as if your students were watching their favorite cartoons. By the end of the book, your students were circling around Naoya’s seat begging him to read them another story.
“I actually have to leave now kiddos, but you have to promise me one thing,” Naoya said and your eyebrows furrowed together in curiosity about what he was about to say to the children.
You watched as he got out of the seat he was in front of the students and kneel down to their heights. Each of your students scooted closer to him to hear his words you couldn’t tell what he was telling the students. You could tell that it was something regarding you due to the fact that some students would giggle and glance over at you.
Naoya would give them a smile before he’s standing up and waltzing over you with that same foolish smile. “So, I’ll pick you up this Friday evening?” He asks.
With your arms crossed over your arms, you would simply just nod. With your students watching in awe like they were reimagining the moments in the book you read to them last week—you couldn’t shoot the man down in front of them. Especially when it seems he had won their hearts over.
“Friday it is.” You said returning the small so your students wouldn’t suspect anything.
“Great, I’ll send a car to pick you up.” Naoya walked towards your classroom door but your words stopped him.
“What did you tell them?” Your head motioned to your students who at this point were playing with each other and gushing over the epic storyline Naoya just acted out.
“Just to make sure you don’t bring around another prince,” Naoya winked at you before he waltz out of your classroom with a date set up with you and the trust of your little five-year-olds.

Natasha x Reader- coming home late
Been avidly thinking and daydreaming about Natasha with my Oc that I’ve inserted into HSR. Thought about what she would do to help Nat relax after a long day. So I thought I write it as a x reader for you guys. Hope y’all enjoy!
Word count- somehow a little over 1000, 1006
Tumblr media
Natasha told you that she was gonna come home late that night not that it was a strange thing to happen.
You know that people need her and how she won’t come home without looking over every patient she has at least once. So for tonight you decide to stay up until she got home.
You made dinner a little late so that it can be hot an fresh and you decide to pick out some bath oil that smells like her favorite flowers, first snow. It was honestly tough to find so you’re glad that you were able to find someone that made and sold it.
When you heard the door open you immediately went to it to greet her and give her a hug.
“Nat you’re home!” A smile on your face as you brought her close. She returned the hug and let out a sigh as she gave you a tight squeeze.
“What are you doing up Honey?” She leaned back and moved her hands up to your face, rubbing her thumbs against your cheeks.
“I’d thought I would make you some dinner and help you relax for the night. I knew you would be tired by the time you got home” you brought your hands up to hers and gave them a squeeze.
Leaning in close, you gave her a kiss feeling a smile against your lips. “Go eat some dinner and I’ll have a bath made for you when you’re done” you moved her in front of you and lightly pushed her to kitchen.
A small laugh came from her as she went to the kitchen to get some food.
While she did that you went to bathroom connected to y’all’s room and made sure that you had everything you needed. Once done you started to fill up the tub, checking up on Natasha while you waited
You asked her about her day and listened as she told you what ailments and injuries she had to take care of. Also told you about what the kids were up to and how they were sad about you not coming to visit today.
A chuckle came from you and you told her to tell them that you’d come by soon. Once you were done talking you went to check the tub and set it up with the oils.
“Hey the bath is ready whenever you’re done eating Nat” you said.
Once she was in the bath you brought in a little stool so you could sit down next to it “hey come over and lean back so I can wash your hair” “wash my hair?” “Mhm” you nodded your head and patted the space you were in front of.
You had put a little neck pillow so she wouldn’t get uncomfortable “I thought it would help you help relax you know” you grab some shampoo and conditioner.
Natasha moved to where you told her and leaned her head down “I really appreciate this (Name) but i can wash my hair on my own you know” she turned her head to look at you.
“I know I know but I wanted to do something for you. Cooking, cleaning up the house and making you a bath is just me showing how much I appreciate you.” You leaned down,close to her face and gave her a kiss on her forehead.
“So just let me take care of you tonight, especially since you’re always taking care of everyone.”
A smile came to her face as she turned the back of her head to you “alright then well thank you I’ll leave you to it.”
Once you heard that you grabbed the shampoo and got to washing her hair.
As you were washing her hair you were able to get a top down view. To which you were admiring a lot, noticing more beauty marks close to her neck and chest.
You were staring a while before Natasha looked up at you. “Enjoying the view?” She brought a hand up from the water and placed it on the back of your neck, bringing you closer.
Your face heated up at the closeness, breath on your lips. Head shaking slightly “y-yeah Nat I am…” you saw a smile come to her face before moving away and turning back to facing the other side
“Even though I appreciate this bath and it is very relaxing; I don’t wanna become a prune so please continue washing my hair.” You leaned back and pouted a little, continuing to wash her hair.
You were in the kitchen cleaning up the dishes, slowly moving your hand in a circle movement. Your thoughts were else, thinking about how Nat looked in the bath. She looked so good and you realized how beautiful she was. God you wished you had more confidence to make a move especially after her teasing.
Letting out a sigh, you put the plate on the dry rack before going back to washing another one. Mind still on the doctor making you not realize the hands that were placed on your hips. “How bout you put down the plate and come join me in bed Hmm?” She put her chin on your shoulder before leaning her head against yours.
You looked at her out of the corner of your eye “ I still have dishes to do Nat” you looked back at them, clearing your throat when you felt her arms wrap around you.
“I know but…” “ but?” You finished up another plate, putting it on the dry rack. You realized Nat hadn’t answered you yet so you turned to look at her. Hands came to your face and brought you into a kiss.
“I want you (Name)… so come to bed will you?” The look she was giving you was telling you just how much her words meant. You swallowed and licked your lips, nodding “y-you know I can never say no to you Natasha”
A raspy laugh came from her as she led you to y’all’s shared bedroom.

Saw @mango-mya 's si/oc inspo post (lmk if you want to be untagged its ok!!) and decided to make a seperate post instead since I'm going to ramble about Chloe and I dont want to clog the main post with my infos (anyway the post is here if anyone wants to reblog with their char's oc inspo :3)
Here's some inspo for my s/i oc Chloe! I don't really have a lot of inspo as oppose to others but I do have a bit detail about it and ahshskaja I think it's fun for me to pick on so the rambles undercut! (Like, im not kidding all my points are everywhere hsksksk)
When I was making an early concept for Chloe, I used Ima (Sedusa) as my early reference for her design. There's a lot of unique body figure of woman in PPG but I am mostly attracted to Sedusa's frame and I cannot stress enough that I love love LOVE her design! Her design is the exact opposite of Utonium (curvy and circle as opposing to Utonium's rectangular and sharp edges) so like I wanted her design to be the opposite of him. I love the idea of opposite attracts and I refered to this idea a lot when I build her character. More on that in just a bit.
When I created her, I was working as a service crew/waitress and I wished it theres something that could swoop me from my boring job so I thinkered with the idea that she found love at the dinky diner she worked at. So one day, I discovered Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner and I loved this song! What's so interesting to me about this song is that it's an acapella so like I'm able to focus on the lyrics and it basically captured the essence of what I want Utonium and Chloe to be except Chloe would be the one greeting him every morning and give him hello kissies and hhh thats basically the catalyst for their story.
For most of her inspo, mainly personality and clothes, I refer a lot to The Nanny's Fran Fine. I grew up watching The Nanny and I always love how her character is someone that's street smart, extroverted, cares about others and charismatic at times so I based Chloe's personality off this. I also refer to Fran's outfits a lot whenever I draw Chloe in other clothing so if you take a hard look at any of my previous art you may recognize some of her clothes that I used as reference.
For Chloe's hair, I want a distinctive short hair for her and P3's Yukari Takeba was my first choice for a cute short hair cut. I love how her bangs just swoops to her sides and the end of her hair just curls outwards its just so cute to me. I added the heart curl design on her bangs because I really want her hair to be the main focus for her design so that when she wears any other clothes, her hair will remain the same and recognizeable. The heart curls that sticks out of her hair was added veryvmuch later during design process and it almost didn't make it. I'm so glad I keep it, I think people mostly recognize her heart cowlick the most.
While I did say Fran Fine is my main inspo, I did have Bojack's Pickles as another of my personality inspo. She's bubbly, energetic and sometimes ditzy and I never mentioned this but Chloe's a bit ditzy and has a valley girl accent. I have not think of a voice claim yet but the voice that I think that would fit Chloe rn is ATSV's Lyla. There's a significant age gap between Utonium and Chloe and I really want to show how both of them came from different generation (Utonium's a boomer while Chloe's more of Gen X so I want to play around their understanding of trends and how they act with their age accodingly hhh)
Overall, what I want to achieve for Chloe's personality and appearance is someone that would compliment Utonium's personality and appearance in the opposite way because like I said, I love the idea of opposite attracts. Where she lacks education, she makes them up for her communication skills. Where Utonium is big on being a book smart person, she is street smart, she knows how to handle things by her way.
I have no intention to make Chloe have a cool career like Utonium because I still want her to be normal. I always make elaborated backgrounds and jobs for my other s/i ocs so for Chloe, I want to relax, I want her to be normal, have a normal job, nothing interesting. I don't want to rely heavily on those points but instead focus more on building her personality.
When I think about it now, I think its good thag I make Chloe normal. She is really the normality that Prof and the girls needed in their family. She doesn't have any special skills, any benefits directly to them nor any interesting history that makes her unique, she's just some woman that just walks into their life yet unintentionally becomes someone significant to the family's life.

hi i’m that one person who was upset about a sonadow sex joke you made. let me preface by saying i’m not here to argue or scare you but to apologize.
you don’t have to respond to this at ALL i just saw your blog name and felt guilty for hurting you.
im sorry about upsetting you and reacting the way i did. i still think its eugh and everything. but i just get upset when people make jokes about that with characters previously stated to be minors because of personal trauma and people sexualizing me as a kid and just morals in general. of course i know that i can’t control how people enjoy their stuff, and i know it’s going to exist regardless. but i want to at least know if who im interacting with is someone i don’t want to talk to due to being a proshipper or whatever stuff like that.
i wasn’t trying to ‘cancel’ you or anything. i was upset and said something in the moment. i’m sorry. i should have just unfollowed and moved on. i should’ve saw the human i knew behind the screen but what i could only think of was a random person i didn’t know. i’m really sorry.
well, anon, i accept your apology. but also i dont. so let's take this one by one, okay?
first of all. you're still wrong, and i'm still angry.
it wasnt a "sex joke", i was commenting on a uquiz someone else made, because i found the sheer fact that sonadow of all ships was included in that quiz to be really funny. not to mention, the uquiz was based on statistics from ao3, and i guessed the correct answer by just knowing how shipping culture works. i thought this was funny. you know, people are allowed to find suggestive humor funny, even if you're uncomfortable with it, anon.
but i'll humor you. lets say i was doing the things i got accused of doing. big deal. i don't think you're wrong for being upset, much less for being uncomfortable, but one: could've settled this over dms, two: not everyone is you. not everyone is uncomfortable. not everyone cares so much. i didn't give that joke more than two seconds of thought, you clearly did, and i don't think you're wrong for that, i think it wasn't my problem.
secondly, and this will sound horrible, but (like i said) your discomfort isn't something i (the people running that oc poll, and my followers, by the way) needed to know about. i hear you, anon, and i'm sorry that all that happened to you. i understand the discomfort. but, like i said, we could've settled this in private, you could've at least told me which mutual you were, and no one else had to know.
third: i am not a proshipper, and i don't appreciate that you're still calling me gross, by the way. this isn't an apology if you're not accepting you were wrong. i'll humor you again and say that i was doing what you say i was doing: it is not that serious to me, and i don't like being called gross for something that is just plain, morally neutral weird (not good, not bad, neutral weird)
and fourth: thank you for at least recognizing what you should've done. however you didn't do that. from what i understand, based on what happened shortly after your anon, you went to the person running that sonic oc poll (which, whatever, i was losing anyway), and you lied about what i was doing to get me kicked out. good on you for realizing that was wrong. but you know, i'm still angry. im banned from many fandom events now because you couldn't just unfollow me. so i'm glad you realized it was wrong, i accept your apology, but i'm still very much angry with you.
i'm glad you're sorry, i'm glad you're recognizing i'm a human being (okay?) and i'm glad you at least tried to apologize. don't call me gross, apologize for real, and next time don't do this to someone through tumblr anon over whats essentially a common ocurrence on the sonic fandom, and every other fandom
(by the way, even if we weren't mutuals, you shouldnt do something like this to "a random person you don't know" either, but what do i know right? and "because of my trauma" isn't an excuse, because by that logic you also generated trauma in me, because now i'm fucking paranoid about everything i fucking post. i can thank you for that.)
have a nice day.
Tumblr media
by the way

I'm usually quite a ghost on tumblr (pretty much anywhere, actually) but I was so glad to see your art pop up again on my dash and fav tags that I thought I should leave a little something in your askbox. I always loved your colours, so vivid and refreshing to my eyes, and also the way you draw and colour eyes and hair. I would be very bad at explaining why exactly, but yeah, it soothes this tired soul of mine to see your art 😌 Also, I don't know if I should ask for some art or not? I just thought of the message actually 😅 Plus, you already drew Norway a lot. Maybe people would like to see someone else. Hmm... What about your take on Faroe if you got any?
Oh my, I am also a shy ghost, so I know it takes a lot to go and leave a message to creators- This is so incredibly touching. Thank you!! Truly, I appreciate it. It means a lot to me!
To answer your question: Yes, I do have a take on our boy Føroyar… kind of. And on Åland too! They would be part of the Nordic family, and I have some ideas for them! They aren't that well-developed (I have my hands full reimagining the canon as it is), and I don't know are OCs really something people care about, so I have never talked about them in my blog. But I am always super excited to see other people's takes on these characters! They shift the family dynamic in such fun ways.
Greenland and Sápmi exist as well, but they don't interact with the family as much as these two. Denmark is Greenland's guardian by legality, but they live on the other side of the Arctic Circle. Sápmi is a close family friend, interacting with Norway, Sweden, and Finland. I have always adored @saltlakris's take on Sápmi!
Tumblr media
Say halló to the Faroe Islands! He's Norway's and Iceland's half-brother (the other part comes from the Celts), but Denmark operates as his guardian. Growing up, he and Iceland were inseparable, and they're best friends to this day. Faroe is an overall kind and well-behaving kid, but he tests Denmark occasionally with his weirdness. Faroe likes to keep to himself, and others don't see him that often.
Much like Iceland, he's actually a daredevil and adrenaline seeker. He likes working at the Sea to provide for his people. He has more of an active approach to life in general and likes doing physical work. Faroe is relatively passive and known to be fair and reasonable. He's polite and can't seem to hold grudges against people, so sometimes he doesn't know how to stand his ground. He doesn't like to tattle and takes the blame just because he's non-confrontational. However, growing up with the rest of Western Nordics, Faroe can be very pigheaded. He's also moody, speaks loudly, and curses like a sailor. He's a bit slow in the sense that he's out of the loop with trends, and he's usually the last one to laugh at jokes. But when others interpret this as him being dumb, it infuriates him. He might not be book-smart, but he has invaluable practical wisdom. He's skilled and efficient. He still has a lot of maturing to do and should start taking some responsibility. Speaking of which, he's notoriously reckless. He's very relaxed and trusting, so he never locks his doors (which he forgets to do in Denmark's place). He also comes and goes as he pleases, rarely informing anyone in advance. If you're Faroe's friend, don't be surprised to see him standing in your living room unannounced. He's known to be always late, having the worst organizational skills, and he's terrible at calling people back. He doesn't want to cause problems, it's just the way he does things - living in the moment.
He has a heavy accent when talking with others, but he adorably speaks in an old-timey fashion that can sound retro to mainlanders (gøtudanskt). Besides the way he speaks, Faroe also acts old-fashioned, as he's well-mannered and thoughtful with other people. Faroe can also appear more traditional than the rest of the Nordics and values his customs. He lived with Denmark for a long time, almost losing his roots, so he's very protective of his practices and freedom nowadays. He still has his own room in Denmark's place, but he lives on his own most of the time. You'd think Faroe is outdoorsy, but his climate is unwelcoming and harsh on the next level. He has gotten used to it and loves his home, but he doesn't get to host garden parties. Charmingly, he gets excited over common natural sights, such as forests and lakes. While the climate might be unwelcoming, the people are the opposite - That's what he loves about his place, its small communal feel, and lovely people, and that's what he values more than anything.
Being in his late teens, Faroe is at that wonderful age when everything your parent does is embarrassing and annoying, and they just don't get you. He gets annoyed with Denmark all the time, so Faroe storms into his bedroom (softly closing the door), quietly punching the air and finally silently screaming into the pillow. Then he crawls back an hour later when he's called for dinner, acting all normal again. Faroe is such an easy kid that he often gets forgotten by Denmark, who focuses more on repairing his relationship with Iceland and Greenland. Faroe is totally happy to be left on his own. Who would want… attention… or validation from Denmark anyway? Faroe adores Norway and looks up to him, but Norway never seems to have time for him exclusively. Besides Iceland, he gets along nicely with Åland, a fellow seafarer nation. They're both self-governmental islands that get overshadowed by their more prominent family members, so they often exchange those "I know how you feel" looks at the dinner table.
The Faroe Islands and Iceland would consider each other best friends! Besides being related, they have pretty similar cultures and upbringings. They're both young, rural, and have a strange sense of fun - to others' their games and jokes just seem horrifying! Growing up, outsiders thought they were twins; that's how inseparable they were. Younger Iceland would devise harmless pranks and ways to be mischievous, and he'd drag the gullible Faroe with him. Poor Faroe always got the blame and lecturing. After Iceland's independence, their relationship started drifting, and Iceland is now making other friends. Sometimes Faroe gets upset by this, but he's too nervous to say anything. He's happy about his brother's success, but he can get quite lonely in his place. Occasionally he longs for those moments when the whole family lived under the same roof, though he would never admit it. Then he visits Denmark for one week, and all those thoughts are thrown out the window! The longer the distance between him and Denmark, the better!
Tumblr media
Anyway, he's an adorable guy, and I am happy to finally introduce him in my Nationverse <3

Mini vent feel free to ignore
NGL I've always been proud of my height(178cm/5'10) but damn if trying to read x reader fics isn't difficult... I'm never going to be small or petite and I dunno it's hard. Glad 1P gives me a taste of that with how ridiculously sized some of the guys are
No, I can appreciate those feels.
It's one of those things where I do try to make my readers as neutral as possible, but also like - I have been a full 5'00" since I was 12.
That's 30 years at this height.
There is probably a *lot* of stuff I write that unconsciously marks the reader as Short-SHORT without meaning to, because it's a default perspective for me. Now, granted, when I'm writing Kid, or Crocodile, or Doffy, these are BIG guys. Everyone is going to feel small, an Kid's not just big in a height sense, he's a BIG GUY.
I also avoid describing body types anymore than I have to, but I don't think I could write a specifically fat reader. I mean, *I* am fat, I am most certainly 100% Not Thin, or slender, or athletic in any capacity. But I mean, I'm also flexible, and I might have way more stomach than I'd like, but I can still lift the back end of an empty Prius.
To which, I just mean, fat doesn't equate to someone being fit or not, so even when I write a feisty reader, I don't *mean* to imply they're fit. Or not. I mean to try and leave it open to the reader themselves.
The hardest part of X Readers isn't just trying to make them as close to one-size-fits-all as you can, but also in understanding we all make assumptions on both sides of the equation. Writer and Reader both.
That said, representation is awesome, so I LOVE x reader stories that do get into some description. Black Readers, Fat Readers, [Insert Whatever here] Readers, Readers that are almost practically OCs.
In the end, the author should enjoy writing it, and the reader should enjoy reading it, and that requires a lot of work on both sides. Cause even self-indulgent writing is still a lot of work, and shifting through mountains of fic is also a good bit of work.
But, I do understand your frustration. I've heard a few people struggle with it... You know, I realize this is on anon, but if there's a story I've written that you've really enjoyed, if there's ANYTHING you want to take time to point out to me and say "this really implies smallness because in my experience x,y,z." I can't promise anything, but it wouldn't hurt either.
It'd be good education for me - learning about other people's experiences will always help me be a better writer. I've certainly experienced a lot personally, but I'll still only ever have my own perspective. I can't promise I'll write a specifically-tall-reader story, but it might help me pull my writing into more truly neutral territory so I'm not subconsciously just writing all I know.

Okay, hold on because this?
Tumblr media
You’re spitting nothing but facts. I’ve said this exact same thing on both of my previous blogs (not this one, not yet xmdkxkdnd) about how x reader just was not a thing in Ye Fandom of Olde. I don’t know if people really believe me or if I just sound like a hunch backed crone standing on her front porch waving her cane at the neighborhood kids, yelling at them to appreciate what they’ve got because back in my day … but it really was such an incredibly different landscape. There are certain aspects of it that I miss for sure and others I’m glad to leave in the past.
The completely random conversations between the author and the character(s) among them, GOD, the way that still activates every single one of my cringe reflexes. 😂 Actually my all time favorite fic had those for the first dozen or so chapters, but she thankfully left them in the fore and afterword, not haphazardly placed in the fic itself, so it was easy to ignore haha. I can laugh at it and maybe even look back at it fondly, but I don’t think I want that particular trend to make a comeback any time soon xmxmdnd
It’s kind of surreal in a way, finding someone who knows exactly what I’m talking about and sharing that mutual experience. I know there have to be more of us out there but I feel like a good chunk of them have probably moved on from anime fandom content so I’m very glad to have found you like this. 💕
I unfortunately got busy with one of my own projects yesterday and didn’t get a chance to read anymore of your stuff, but I’m really looking forward to diving in once I’m done. When I tell you I am 👀 eyeballing the hell out of your Sesshomaru fics cmdkxmdmd
Also, if I may ask, are you by any chance a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho? 🥹
"I don’t know if people really believe me or if I just sound like a hunch backed crone standing on her front porch waving her cane at the neighborhood kids, yelling at them to appreciate what they’ve got because back in my day … but it really was such an incredibly different landscape."
We can both be crones, in that case! But no, I completely get what you're saying. It was SO different. I am genuinely appreciative of the fact that "reader fic" is so popular and the distaste I see for it is mainly "it's clogging up the regular tags" rather than the absolute nastiness that used to be associated with any OCs or inkling of "hey I like these characters, wouldn't it be neat if they wanted me?"
OCs in general were considered taboo enough, but reader fic was just… not a "thing" back in the early 2000s, really, not in the style we know it today. When second person was used, it was usaully meant to be stylized (rather than today where the intent of second person is "reader fic," to pull the reader into the story in a different, visceral way) and second person fics would fall into the OC bucket.
Gosh on that note, I remember "Mary Sue Hunter" groups that would find any OCs on ye olde fanfiction.net and leave reviews with forms to determine how much of a "Mary Sue" someone's OC was.
If you were going to attempt an OC, it felt like you had to make them Super Super Boring and Normal and Ordinary and No Actual Characters Ever Fell in Love with Them (except maybe non-important side characters) in order to get people to leave you alone.
Not that there's anything wrong with writing characters who are ordinary but it rarely felt it was an organic decision from the authors, but rather a reflection of what was "okay" to write.
Fandom is so different now. As you said, there's some things I miss ("don't like, don't read" and "you're responsible for what you read" being the standard etiquette, for one...) but plenty that I don't, too.
Also, if I may ask, are you by any chance a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho?
Yessss. I love it. I have so many discarded OCs from my teenage years from YYH, they were all ridiculously self-indulgent ofc. I do want to at some point write a few yandere YYH characters, but I haven't gotten any inspiration for it yet.

A Behind the Scenes of: The Modern Day Portraits
Jonathan returns to his YouTube channel for the last time to talk about the portraits at the end of the book.
On AO3.
Ships: jargancy, jopper, steddie, Robin x OC, byler, elumax, Dustin x Suzie
Warnings: homophobia mention, racism mention
~~~~
“Hi, I’m Jonathan Byers, the main photographer and editor of A Collection of Queer Photography and I apologize that it has been this long,” Jonathan starts out the video looking a little embarrassed and rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
Continuing he says: “I had a lot of plans for this – pages I wanted to discuss, guests I wanted to have – but I got swept up in other projects, so I have kind of lost steam for this project, but I wanted to have some semblance of an ending, so today we’re looking at the modern day portraits of everyone at the end of the book, which had always been my intention to end with.”
He grabs the book and starts flipping from the back as he explains: “The whole point of this book was to show the little snippets and snapshots, but these final few pages are showing us now and they’re portraits, which means they are more deliberate, which makes them interesting to explore in contrast to the other ones.”
Jonathan looks back up, having found the page, and says: “Not to discredit them, I’ve done a lot of portraits and being deliberate isn’t a bad thing, I just like casual photos more.”
“You might be asking yourself, but Jonathan, if you like those better, why didn’t you include a snapshot of everyone now at the end?” he goes on. “And that is because I wanted to end on that deliberate note. I wanted everyone to think about what they found important about themselves now and they people they grew up to be and allow them to highlight that.”
“And, of course, a lot of the snapshot include the kids, who were are not putting in a spotlight, because most of them are too young to comprehend what they’re agreeing to,” Jonathan adds.
Then he turns back to the book and says: “The first portrait is of my parents and is called Jim & Joyce Hopper-Byers. I put them first, because I kind of organized them on age and affiliation, if you want to call it that. Like we’re a family, but they are groups. Kind of. It just happens.”
On screen Jim & Joyce Hopper-Byers appears. It’s of an elderly Hopper and Joyce. Hopper is now entirely bald and Joyce’s hair is completely gray and thinning, wrinkles and sun spots cover both of them. The two are standing on the porch of their home, Hopper holding Joyce around her waist and Joyce leans against him. The two smiling contently and looking at peace.
“My parents really wanted theirs to be outside of their home,” Jonathan says. “And I am really happy that it looks as peaceful as going there is. Because that’s the most important thing about them I wanted to capture.”
“Neither of them had a great start – which I won’t go into that much – and they didn’t find each other until later in life,” Jonathan tells the camera. “Getting to photograph a peaceful retirement for them is really special to me.”
“I also like the homey feel of the place, since it has been such a haven for all of us and it still is for many local queer kids today. It’s not only an important aspect of this book, but of them and it fit with the themes.”
“On the page next to is is the portrait of me and my partners, which is taken by Jane, my sister,” Jonathan continues. “I’m glad it’s her, who got to take this photograph, since I was the one that taught her and it bonded us over the years. And because she is also in a polyam relationship, so I trust her the most with capturing us.”
“The titles are pretty simple, so it’s called: Argyle, Jonathan & Nancy Byers,” he adds.
The portrait in question appears. Argyle still has long hair, now with streaks of gray in it. He is wearing a long skirt as he sits on a chair in a sleek apartment, legs crossed. Behind him on the left is Jonathan smiling awkwardly and hunched over a little. He is also older, fully gray and slightly bald in his shirt, jeans and flannel. Nancy is on the right, a hand on Argyle’s shoulder. She looks a little severe as she has always done, hair pulled up in a tight bun, power suit on. She looks friendly, but is smiling only faintly.
“We collectively wanted it to be a more family-style photo in our own home, since we didn’t know if we were going to have that when we started dating and we wanted to show other people out there that you can,” Jonathan says. “Though, I suppose we all had a different take on the why.”
“Of course, dating multiple people isn’t a usual home thing, but for me it also came from growing up poor with a shitty father, so the idea of being able to a home filled with loved ones, seemed far away and out of reach,” Jonathan explains.
“I am also wearing work clothes in the photo, which might seem counter-intuitive, but it’s because I build this home with my work and the people in it with me,” Jonathan says. “My work clothes have always been my comfort clothes. And as the photographer, I wanted you to see the person behind the photos in the book.”
“For Argyle, he has lived in a more absent home, where no one cared about what he did as long as he didn’t step too far out of line,” Jonathan moves on to the next subject. “So, he’s wearing clothes that make him happy, because he is in a home where he can do that now and still be loved.”
“That sound right?” he asks, eyes focusing on something behind the camera.
“Yeah, baby boy, that sounds right,” Argyle’s affectionate voice comes from off screen. “I also wanted to be visibly genderqueer in a portrait, because it’s often not allowed and seen as ill-suited, but look how well it suits.”
“It suits perfectly. You’re very beautiful,” Jonathan smiles, a rare moment of sappiness.
“Ahww, you’re so cute,” Argyle squeals and now Jonathan does blush. “I’m gonna have to kiss you now.”
There is a cut after that, though Jonathan still looks a little flushed as he goes on: “Nancy is also dressed in her work clothes. That was important to her, because she loves her career and she takes it very seriously.”
“Nancy’s home life as a kid was very picture-perfect and American,” Jonathan says. “She was expected to become a housewife and she has always resented that. She never wanted to become like her parents and showing that she has that home, but isn’t the housewife was very important to her.”
“A lot of people have called her cold online, but you have to understand that there is much more to her than this, but she likes exuding this,” Jonathan says. “She’s not cold for cold-ness sake. We talked about it in the video about her career, how hard it is to be taken seriously. This professional persona is what she is proud of, not the only thing she is.”
He flips the page and snorts: “This one was difficult, because it just felt weird to not have Steve and Robin in the same picture, because they’re so closely intertwined. But we settled on having both portraits done in the same room to show their closeness, because otherwise it wouldn’t fit the format. But we did consider it.”
“Starting on page 226 we have Eddie & Steve Munson,” Jonathan reads.
The portrait in question appears. Eddie and Steve are in a cozy living room on a couch together. Eddie is sprawled against over the couch, arms thrown over the back. Eddie still has his long hair, now streaked with gray, his laugh lines are permanent and he smiles easily. His style is much the same, he has a cut off band shirt and black jeans with chains, his arms filled with bracelets. Steve is leaning against his side with a soft smile. Steve is wearing a big sweater and glasses, which had become necessary in his 30s. His hair is shorter now and he dyes it, highlights throughout.
“Eddie put a lot of thought into his outfit,” Jonathan says. “He’s been told his whole life that he’s too much and that he’ll grow out of it, so he really wanted to show that he was still there and still metal.”
“Steve likely put as much thought into it, because he very much likes dressing himself,” Jonathan adds. “I know it doesn’t seem like it now, but Steve got a lot of flack for how much he cared about his appearance. Caring about your hair or clothes would get slurs hurled at you for being effeminate, which is ridiculous but also the society we live in.”
“I personally like how Steve dresses. He’s always dressed softly, approachable. I think he really came into himself once he stopped trying to force himself to be a straight jock,” Jonathan comments idly.
“For them, they wanted their portrait to be casual. Closer to an evening on the couch than an official portrait,” Jonathan goes on.
“Steve has been forced into too many family portraits that were more for show and Eddie has always hated the portraits they had to do as Corroded Coffin, since he’d be checked over meticulously to see if nothing ‘too gay’ showed,” Jonathan explains. “So this casual style is more comfortable for them and it really suits them.”
“On the next page are Robin and Rose, of course called Robin & Rose Munson,” Jonathan continues.
Robin & Rose Munson appears. In it, Robin’s hair is green and she has an undercut. She grins brightly into the camera as she holds Rose close. Rose is still a fat lady in a beautiful floral dress. Her long red hair is up in a ponytail and she has an elaborate flower themed make up look on. Robin’s patterned button up matches Rose’s dress and is loosely tucked into light gray dress pants which are held up by suspenders.
“For them it was important to be old and very much lesbians,” Jonathan says fondly. “Neither of them had any role models and especially none above age forty, so they wanted to be that for all the baby lesbians and bisexuals.”
“They’re also very much a butch/femme couple and they dressed up for this to highlight those parts of themselves, because they’re very tied to how they identify themselves,” Jonathan says.
“Rose has been masculinized a lot due to her size and told she couldn’t be the princess in a story, so to say fuck you to that and show up anyway was important to her,” Jonathan explains. “She loves dress shopping, trying fun makeup and dressing loudly. She called it queer femininity when she was here and that’s what she’s there to represent. The femininity that’s done for yourself, outside of society’s expectations, and I think that’s really cool.”
“Robin, of course, is doing the same for butches out there,” Jonathan goes on. “She is just so much herself and it’s delightful. She doesn’t let the fact that she’s nearly fifty stop her from dying her hair a fun color and wearing loud patterns and masculine clothes. She’s still a weird girl in her heart and she never ‘grew out’ her tomboy phase and she’s still amazing and successful and in love.”
“Both of them are very aware of what they represent when they go out into the world. What little queer girls on the street see. They’re both pillars in their local community and they want to be that bit of hope for people.”
“And they just really like being loud and having fun with their style,” Jonathan says. “I don’t know if I know many people, who can just delight in eccentricity like they can.”
Jonathan flips the page again and says: “I first thought about putting Jane, Max and Lucas on the next page with Erica, since she and Lucas are blood siblings, but it just didn’t fit right as logic. The whole point is that blood relations are the end all, be all and Lucas and his partners have lived in the same city and Will and Mike for a very long time, while Erica is the god-mother to Dustin and Suzie’s children, so that’s how the order was created.”
“First up, Jane, Dr. Lucas & Max Mayfield-Sinclair,” Jonathan introduces.
The photo is of the three of them with their pets. Max is sitting on a chair a husky next to her that she pets his head, her crutches leaning against her on the other side. Lucas is leaning against the chair with a smile, holding a white fluffy cat in his arms. El is sitting on the arm of Max’s chair, she has a tabby cat in her lap and a bird on her shoulder. El’s long hair is in a bun and she looks a little like a hippy, a sharp contrast to Max’s professional wear, while Lucas is their middle ground with his respectable sweater and jeans. He now has glasses and looks like a typical dad, his afro now big and fluffy. All of them look happy, content. Age is starting to show and it fits them well.
“I first wanted to add their pets to the title as well, but they foster pets with an alarming regularity and Jane didn’t want any of them to feel excluded, so we decided on human members only,” he informs the audience fondly.
“However, including their pets was very important, since they’re a huge part of their lives with Jane and Lucas running a vet’s office together,” Jonathan says. “They love their pets very much and I loved including them, even if it made posing a little more difficult.”
“Max is in the middle, since she is dating both people in the picture, so it’s more fitting to have her there. Also, she had to be seated, so it made more sense composition wise,” Jonathan explains. “She is also the only one in work clothes, because she wanted to highlight both her disability and her career. As an activist and lawyer in the anti-ableist movement, it was important to her to be visible in that way, so I ensure that her crutches could be in the photo as well.”
“Jane on the other hand is fully dressed in her comfy clothes,” Jonathan smiles. “She’s had a really rough childhood, before mom and dad adopted her, so having her individuality means a lot to her. She wanted to highlight her own personality and not a professional idea of her – though their vet’s office allows for a lot of personal style. I think she did that marvelously.”
“Lucas dressed not fully comfy, but also not entirely professional. He usually has his hair up when working, for example. He is also aware of how he’s perceived, but for different reasons,” Jonathan goes on, getting more serious. “As a black man he’s very aware of how he’s perceived, so while he seems to just be a normal guy, I know he put a lot of thought into his outfit.”
“He has always been made to feel as an outsider, which means he gravitated towards more ‘normal’ styles when going out. He and Jane actually have a few overlaps in style, but he put on a more professional outfit for this, because he wanted to remind people that he is a veterinarian, who accomplished things and not a hoodlum or gangster,” Jonathan says with a small sigh. “It really sucks that he felt the need to do that, but a sad reality.”
“However, he doesn’t erase himself either,” Jonathan adds. “Those are his clothes and how he dresses, just more when people come to visit that aren’t family. And he did let his natural hair be, instead of styling it. So there are still pieces of him there, he just chose to give a more professional front, like some others have done as well. Maybe just for different and shittier reasons.”
The photo on screen gets replaced by the next one. It’s of Mike and Will in an art studio. Will is sitting on a stool Mike is behind him, resting his chin on Will’s shoulder. Both of them have short hair now and wrinkles are starting to show. Mike is in sensible work clothes that prioritize comfort, while Will’s clothes are a little eccentric and covered in paint. The two are smiling softly into the camera.
“The next one is Mike & Will Byers,” Jonathan introduces. “If you’ve read the book, you might have noticed that Mike loves clinging to Will’s back and that hasn’t stopped yet. I don’t think that posing like this was on purpose, it just is natural for them.”
“Their portrait is taken in the studio, because while it is Will’s work space, it is also a very personal space for them,” Jonathan says. “Mike often poses for Will’s work and they do a lot of craft projects with their daughters there.”
“Will is an artist to the bone and he has gotten so much more comfortable with himself throughout the years, something I’m really proud of. The two of them showed up for this portrait as themselves and that is pretty great for both of them and not at all what they would have done when they were still kids,” Jonathan says.
“Like I’m quite serious, they had kind of forgotten this was happening, so Mike had just come home when I got there and Will was still painting,” Jonathan laughs at the memory. “The back of the canvas you see on the side there is a painting that will be first shown at the opening of the exhibition Will is doing at Tate Modern this year.”
Jonathan looks at the photo again and smiles once more. He adds: “Both of them struggled a lot with internalized homophobia in their teen years, so for it to be a casual domestic photo, a little intimate look into them, is amazing to see.”
He lingers on the page for a second longer, before he clears his throat and flips to the final two pages of the book.
“Okay, on the left we have Dr. Dustin & Dr. Suzie Henderson,” Jonathan moves on.
On screen it appears. In it, the two are standing hand in hand in a modern house. Suzie is wearing functional yet professional clothes, some tools hanging from her belt, while Dustin is a sweater vest and khaki pants, gray at his temples. The years has made the two of them softer, putting fat on their bones and laugh lines on their faces.
“They have also chosen to pose in their work clothes, but it was a little more deliberate than Mike and Will,” Jonathan says. “They have a really big passion for their work and bring that into their personal lives by going to all sorts of museums and organizing field trips and experiments at home for their own kids and other interested kids in the neighborhood.”
“Suzie really wanted to wear her tool belt, even though at NASA she works more in design than actually making the prototypes, because she is a tinkerer first and she wanted to highlight that, since she works in a male-dominated field,” Jonathan explains.
“Dustin is just dressed in his professor clothes. He loves lecturing and from what I’ve heard, he’s pretty popular under students,” Jonathan says. “It’s strange sometimes, to picture the kid with graphic tees that always argued and knew better, now being an adult with a lot of patience. He’s really grown as a person and this outfit truly does show that, if you knew him back then.”
Then Jonathan turns to the final page and says: “Of course we’re ending the book with Erica, the baby of the family. Though she isn’t a baby anymore. If Senator Erica Sinclair is familiar to you, this is not a coincidence, because she did also use this photo for her reelection campaign.”
Senator Erica Sinclair appears, which is a portrait of Erica. She is in front of the Capitol building, smiling into the camera with a sharp grin that has a ruthless edge to it. Her curly hair is up in a bun and she is in a power suit, the little American flag pinned to the lapel. Age has seemingly not yet hit her, she looks powerful and on top of the world. In her prime as an adult.
“Erica is a very important person in our lives and it is sad that she couldn’t be more present in the book – we touched upon it before, I think. Definitely in interviews. But since she is a senator, we did have to be careful about her public image,” Jonathan explains.
“But we did get a few good candid shots of her in the book and I think it’s delightful to see her as an ambitious smart young girl and then as a successful woman,” Jonathan says. “It’s not unknown that she is a huge inspiration for many black girls and girls in general out there and her success is something that both of us really wanted to highlight.”
“She put a lot of work and effort into getting where she is and she has given her whole life to politics. And with that, to bettering our world for all sorts of people, such as queer people, which is central to the book,” Jonathan says.
“I wanted to end with her, not just because she is the youngest and we kind of went based of age, but also because she is the future,” Jonathan goes on. “She is trying to systematically change things for everyone and she is succeeding. That is very hopeful for me and I wanted it to end hopeful.”
“Anyway, that was the behind the scenes of the modern day portraits. Hope you enjoyed it and that it was interesting. Thank you so much for sticking it with me throughout this series,” Jonathan signs off for the last time this series. “Bye!”
~~
A/N:
*Removing my hand from Jonathan’s body to stop puppeting him*: Okay, so I did have many plans for this that I am no longer doing (I know very sad), because I got swept up in other things and by that I mean that I re-binged Leverage, wrote fics for that, decided to write I Found Myself a Cheerleader (AKA a 174K cheerleader!steve steddie au), re-binged FMAB and wrote fics for that, before starting an archaeologists stobin au that I will start posting soon.
So, this will be the last chapter, though I am not saying that I’ll never add anything to this verse, just likely nothing big and not with any regularity. I do hope you enjoyed this last addition and I really want to thank everyone, who has read this and left nice comments, rereading them inspired me enough to add this final chapter and give it a proper end.
OC in 15 or Less
Thank you @sergeantnarwhalwrites for the tag! Anyone is welcome to hop on, and I’ll tag @bloodlessheirbyjacques @tryingtimi @magefaery just in case you guys would like to join, no pressure 💖
The rules are to use 15 lines of dialogue or less that capture the vibes or personality of your character. Bonus points for being able to do it with one line, but it’s okay if you need more than one for context.
For this one, we’re doing Will from Freaks Of Preston. I tried to capture both his dramatic and funnier moments, but I’ve come to the realization that this kid is in desperate need of a personality lol
————————————————
1. “What for?! He doesn’t even love me!” Will rolled up his sleeve, revealing the pale scars that ran across his arm. “I’m his little burden, the curse on his family— Why does he insist on keeping me?!”
2. “I just got you back. I’m not losing you, never again.”
3. He hopped off the bed in a flash, ignoring the pain that shot through his legs, and the spinning in his head.
“Where is he,” Will said, “did he make it—”
“Will, you can’t get up yet!” Sarah pulled him back. “You have to rest.”
4. “You can call me anything, really— except William.” He scrunched his face up. “Or Willy. That just sounds like an old man.”
5. “How can you stand it?!” The boy waved his arms wildly. “They talk all sweet and act like they’re sorry, but they never even liked Jason to begin with. They’re glad he’s dead!”
6. Will grinned. “Is that… disco? The cheesy, seventies disco music that you rolled your eyes at six years ago?”
Jason shoved the CD back onto the shelf, clearing his throat excessively. “You didn’t see that.”
“No, I think I did.”
7. “Pay them no mind,” Vesely said. “They’re going to be bitter. You’re not to blame for it.”
Oh, I know, Will thought, an unamused frown flickering across his face, believe me.
8. Jin poked his shoulder. “So when’s the wedding, huh?”
Will huffed. “I just found out that people can be attractive, I don’t think we’ll get to ‘marriage’ levels for a while.”
9. “Yeah, it sucks to be sick all the time. On the other hand, I haven’t slept this easily in years.”
10. “I only started fighting because you made me. I wasn’t trying to be a hero or a god… I just wanted my family back.”
11. “There they are, the triumphant heroes!” Henry hugged them both over the side of the couch. “You survived your day with that old devil and his family. How do you feel?”
Jason and Will let out a simultaneous “ehhhh” of fatigue.
12. “I know a lot of you are hurt, but we need to get you out of this car in case it collapses. If you can move, I want you to head towards the door in the back. I’ll help any of you who are injured.”
13. “I get it, okay? I’m a filthy fucking Freak with no place in your world, and nothing I do will ever be enough for any of you. I’m sorry you have problems with us, but I really— really— don’t care! There are people up there waiting for us, and I’m gonna make sure they get to see their families again. Can we at least come together on that?!”
14. “I spent so long trying to pretend I was Human, and I hated it. There’s so many amazing things I can do, if I just stop hiding who I am.” Will stared at his hands. “I want to be proud of myself, for once.”
15. “Take whatever you need from me, just leave them alone.”
not so much a fic writer question from the list, but your reply to #48 got me thinking - have you read Sansukh by @Determanfidd? If yes, what did you think of it?
I have! Probably much more recently than every other person on the planet who likes Legolas and Gimli, but I finally have and I adore it.
It took me a while to get fully invested, in part because I'm not really a fan of the leaning-into-movieverse-and-then-pushing-further thing that people have a tendency to do where they really dial-up the antagonism between Legolas and Gimli, which this fic did do in the beginning so I gave it a little side-eye about that for the first few chapters (but thankfully by then I was already intrigued by the dwarves so I kept reading)...and in a much larger part because—and I realize that I'm about to speak sacrilege in the eyes of many here, yes—I simply do not care about Bilbo and Thorin as a couple. I don't! I actually filtered that tag out when I first started looking through the Legolas/Gimli tag on AO3 because of how completely disinterested I was (hence Sansûkh not even showing-up in the tag for me at first lol).
But I kept seeing references to it on tumblr and in fanart (in particular this one) so one night when I ran out of other stories that I was interested in reading I finally popped it open...and, huh, that's an interesting beginning, okay. So I read a little more. And I found myself quickly getting interested almost in spite of myself in all these dwarves whom, I must confess, I genuinely could not remember which was which in most cases (meaning their depictions in the movie; I couldn't place which name went with which dwarf; I googled a few times I'm not going to lie). So it was interesting also in a more meta-sense, because here was this author taking existing canon characterizations and details and building up a whole society upon them...but to me, they were effectively complete OCs. So it was I'm sure a very different reading experience for me than it was for most readers, because I had no context for over half the canon cast!
(The only reason I sometimes know who the movie dwarves are now when people reference them is because of this fic I am not kidding.)
Although speaking of OCs...oh my stars, the OCs in this story are amazing. I'm glad especially that I already had a Mirkwood Populace of my own conceived before I read this, because Laerophen in particular is just the best and I want to read a dozen more stories with him and it would be very difficult to be trying to come up with Mirkwood OCs now without ending up with pale imitations of Legolas's brothers here if I hadn't already had Rilaerloth and company living in my head.
(I will forever live in hope that the author will someday figure out a way to write an original novel with the general premise of that ending trio's journey to the east because that would be amazing.)
Anyway, Sansûkh very quickly went from "I suppose this is interesting" to "I am so invested in this entire universe holy crap" for me and I've actually read the whole thing through twice now. I actually even gave a crap about Bilbo and Thorin's relationship by the end! I was rooting for them so hard!
Absolutely great fic. Spectacular world building, great character work both for the canon folks and especially for the OCs. Love it, recommend it with enthusiasm...even to folks who potentially don't ship one of the main couples, or think they have no interest in most of the characters XD
Although I maintain that I do still want this fic too.
Tumblr media
October 25th.
Dear, Spencer.
My whole department fell in sick yesterday — including my students, barely anyone was spared. Some kind of food poisoning? I don't know, people started throwing up, passing out and whatnot. We didn't know what to do!
(Yes, this is how I start my letter. I had to vent to someone how weird this is!)
I immediately called 911 and the cafeteria became swarmed with EMT's. My first supposition was that something was wrong with the cafeteria food. I never eat there because I either bring my own food or... I just don't remember eating until I'm off to go home. So, I tested it, the cafeteria food. But no. Nothing was wrong. I still find it weird that this happened out of nowhere, but my colleagues think it wasn't anything serious.
ODU was on the news today. Same thing happened. I can't shake this off, it can't be a coincidence, can it?
Sorry, I needed to ramble to somebody.
Ah, Spencer. It's too late for that, I already care enough to worry. What other resources are you trying? I hope you are not self-medicating yourself, it's not good. You're not doing that, right?
I have a friend that I could recommend you. She's a neurologist so she could be more helpful — you've probably been to a lot of those, but she's really good.
Her name is Clare Thompson, her office is in Washington, DC at Georgetown. If you want, I can make an appointment for you, we're close friends. If not, then just ignore this. I'm not trying to push you into anything, I'm just concerned.
What you said reminded me of the concept “Athazagoraphobia”. I researched about it to include it in my MD thesis about Alzheimer's disease. It means exactly what you said: fear of forgetting something or someone, or being forgotten.
I relate to you on that. But I'm more afraid of being forgotten. Sometimes I think that if I don't put my mark in the world, then how will people remember me? Do you feel like that too?
I absolutely know what you mean about the dolls... They're creepy. I had a few when I was a child, I don't know where they disappeared to though, I think my mother donated them. Either way, I'm happy not knowing their whereabouts.
I am happy that your friends are threatening you to to go out more.
Yes, maybe he is sick. It's an option I've considered. But he usually sends an email letting me know he will miss class. Fabian is not the kind of student that misses class without a plausible reason. He's very dedicated and one of my top students.
Of course you'd take is as a challenge, Doctor Reid. I could tell you were the competitive type from the moment you told me you were a rebel as a kid (no, I'll never forget that, you book thief).
Oh, did you really like the book? I'm so glad. Yes! I have like 5 recommendations to you but I'll spare you two: After Dark and Sputnik Sweetheart. Tell me what you think afterwards.
Something reminded me of you today. I was grabbing my coffee and I guess I picked up the wrong order. Do you know why I think that? Because it was the sweetest beverage I've ever had. I could've dropped dead right there if I had taken another sip. Disgusting, really. My blood vessels were almost clogged up. The person left in a hurry and left their coffee right beside mine on the balcony. Oh! And guess what: it was written “Reid” in their cup. I know it is a common name, but it reminded me of you.
Don't forget to drink water and eat, Spencer. As always, be careful. Looking forward to hear from you soon! <3
Love,
Iris.
As a follow-up to my let people use fanfiction as narrative therapy post I would also like to state for the record:
Ain’t nothing wrong with self insert fanfiction. Or Mary Sue OCs that are basically self inserts. Also nothing wrong with people writing ‘bad’ fanfiction that has nothing to do with the canon really. I don’t give a shit. People are making art and that’s awesome. I may not read stuff that isn’t to my personal tastes, but I am Glad people are making their art regardless. Especially young people. Especially people who are otherwise new to writing. Hell yeah, Make Art.
One thing I have noticed about fandom on tumblr is that in very large fandoms with mass appeal, there are often a lot of kids and youths and young folk watching or reading and thus wanting to create transformative art about it. This also means that a high concentration of fic may tend more towards having less to do with the actual canon of the thing and being more focused on whatever those kids really wanted to write or read about it. To discuss one specific example, the largest subsection of fandom that currently exists around the DC batman franchises on this site is the batfam fandom, a fandom comprised mostly of younger fans who are fans more of the platonic ideal of batman and his adopted kids and close associates that only really exists in their own works and also the webtoon**** For most of those people the appeal is the found family aspect, and that’s what they want to read and write about. Hell yeah. Good for them. At least they’re writing. At least they’re making art.
****I know there are a lot of people in the batman comics fandom that have serious issues with the webtoon and the way that dc comics publishing agendas have begun to reflect more what people on the internet are talking about and less coherent storytelling that makes sense based on past canon. And this is a very fair criticism.
But this is not a problem limited to dc. This is a problem of all major production companies who produce art for mass release. TV shows being written in response to what people say on reddit has been ruining creative endeavors in an obvious way at least since Game of Thrones was airing. Books being published based on what will be popular on tiktok derived from the popularity of some frankly terrible novels (yes I do mean acotar) leads to some absolute drivel on the best seller list. Of course the comics industry is also fucking things up the same way.
Your enemy there are not the young fans new to fandom who are just discovering writing fanfiction and doing so by writing about whatever interests them most. Please stop blaming kids and other people who aren’t writing fanfiction close enough to your concept of canon for this problem, it is far bigger than that.
Let people make their maybe bad art in peace. Everyone has to make bad art on the road to learning how to make better art. I am glad they are making their art regardless.
Also no shade meant to those fans this is just an observation and I wish you all well, but I do find it a little funny that the people who Are experts on the dc comics canon who I have seen criticize the existence of the batfam fandom on here are also usually like ‘this is my favorite character, I hate every single run this character has ever been in except this one from 30 years ago and five panels of this one run that got cancelled early.’ Like, you don’t really like most of the canon you wish other people would familiarize themselves with right? Give new fans a chance to want to learn more about it. Most of the fans in that circle are pretty young, they’re gonna have kinda bad taste sometimes and that’s fine and good actually. They’ll grow out of it and maybe some of them will come to know the comics canon more closely.
This is also why even though I am vocal about personally disliking the works of SJM (acotar my beloathed) and its impact on the publishing industry, I am honestly happy for anyone that read those books and enjoyed them. Same for every other book I don’t like. If you read it and get something out of it hell yeah good for you. I was unironically into twilight for many years as a teen I am not here to pass judgement on teens or anyone for that matter for what they enjoy.
Most big fandoms I have dipped my toes into have this same problem. If there are a lot of young people in that fandom, there’s gonna be a lot of fanfic that is written by people just learning to write, and that’s great, I love that actually, good for them. But those are always the fandoms where I see people being perhaps more vitriolic than necessary towards other fans for not being up to snuff. Let people make art that you don’t think is good, please. It’s fine actually. If you don’t like it you don’t have to read it. Just be glad someone is making art that makes them happy and move on.
