Oh to sit next to Fawad Khan in a red convertible while gazing lovingly at him. I like how she emphasises on improving the patient’s mental health to help him heal. Incase you haven’t noticed already, cold brooding™️ x silly goose is my favourite character dynamic.

book recs sept/oct 2023

THE SPEAR CUTS THROUGH WATER by simon jiminez -- I have no idea how to describe this. best book I've read in a year. absolutely gutting and beautiful and intricately put-together fantasy about two young men escorting an escaped god-empress on a pilgrimage to bring down an empire. but actually it's so much more intimate than that. please please please read this book, it deserves the world. yes it's gay.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO by jessica dettmann -- an aussie romcom tailored specifically to me, someone who imprinted on the kenneth branagh much ado about nothing movie. very meta and genre aware, lively and touching, a heap of fun.

LOOKING GLASS SOUND by catriona ward -- also very meta! it's uhhh about a bisexual disaster teen's coming-of-age summer, and also about the decades-later fight over who gets to control the narrative of that summer. and hauntings. and serial killers. every single one of ward's books is its own unique thing and a wonder to behold.

THE NOBLEMAN'S GUIDE TO SEDUCING A SCOUNDREL by kj charles -- if i haven't made you read any kjc books by now then what are we doing here. I don't know how she keeps getting better and better and better. this one is another slippery liar/stubbornly goodhearted but bad-tempered lord pairing. I adored every word.

NOT HERE TO MAKE FRIENDS by jodi mcalister (ARC) -- 3rd book in her series set on a bachelor-like tv show, and my hands-down favourite. friends to lovers but also make it schemer 4 schemer!! I would die for this ruthless tv villain and her sleep deprived gremlin producer and their intense, searing, incredible romance entirely free of conventional moral compasses.

THE HOLLOW PLACES by t. kingfisher -- how are her books both so hilarious and so wildly, skin-crawlingly unsettling?? I think it's because of how relatable the protagonist is. I would react EXACTLY like kara if I found an eerie alternate dimension nexus made of willow trees in the walls of my uncle's weird museum. superb and very readable horror.

THE GILDED CROWN by marianne gordon (ARC) -- fantasy with a sapphic romance between a death-witch and the assassinated princess she was hired to raise from the dead. yes you're right that DOES sound amazing. the writing is assured and smooth and propulsive; if you like stories with a heightened mythic/fairytale feel, you'll love this.

“What does it mean to be human, my prince?”

The young prince looks up at his tutor confusedly. They had just been speaking about arithmetics, had they not? Of course, he wouldn’t know, his head was perpetually lost in thought about anything other than his lessons.

“I’m not sure I understand what you mean, professor,” the boy says in turn.

“Just...think about it for a moment, there is no correct or incorrect answer, young princeling,” the old tutor says, his eyes inquisitive as to what the boy would say.

How do the ones who have life handed to them on a silver platter perceive the vast world around them?

The boy ponders for a moment, his head swirling around potential answers. It was surely not as simple as eating his favourite cake or riding horses with his brother along the shoreline. Nor was it the bad things, like his mother tugging his ear when he misbehaved, or his father’s angry eyes. But anything more than superficial was inconceivable.

Perhaps it was the collection of all those things, the good and the bad that made up the answer to that tricky question. It was a start, he thought. But despite his tutor’s push to answer he was still unsure.

“I…I don’t know, professor,” he admits after a few minutes of silence as he thought. But the tutor didn’t seem to be upset, a kind smile gracing his lips.

“No one does. It is the question of the universe, and no one quite has the answer. Or perhaps they all do, since human life is vast and no life is quite the same as the next. Do not be discouraged, but question it as you go to sleep tonight. That is your only task for today, understood?”

The young boy's face lights up at his tutor’s words, this meant he could play.

“Yes, professor!” he says with a giddy smile, leaping out of his chair before bounding towards the door. As he turned the doorknob he suddenly remembered his manners, nodding his head politely once before running out the door.

He would not be getting any sleep tonight.

“MOTHER, FATHER,” the young prince cries out, the fires blazing in a deadly inferno. Like hands, the wisps of flames reached out, ready to drag him to the depths of hell themselves.

With each inch he crawled back, two more were devoured by the blaze.

“BROTHER, PLEASE,” he begged as feet scuffled by his door, shouts to put out the flames throughout the rest of the castle, all deaf to his cries.

The prince was young, but he was smart. He quickly realized there wouldn’t be anyone coming for him, not when the Emperor, Empress and Crown Prince were still in danger. So he searched for options.

The flames had already engulfed their way toward his door, where more would be waiting outside, so that wasn’t an option.

There was nowhere else to hide. Where could you possibly hide from the fury of fire?

His only option was the balcony, but to open the doors meant to provide oxygen to feed the flames. But it was an escape and he had no choice.

Through the flames, he ran. The distance that once felt so short to him now felt like an eternity. The heat of the rocky floor burned his feet, the wisps of the blaze scorched his face, the acrid smoke stinging his lungs.

But he pressed forward.

Closer.

Closer to the only salvation in his sight. The only freedom he could grasp.

He bursts through the balcony doors and the flames behind him explode with a newfound fervour only oxygen could bring. But he was free, if only for a little while.

Looking around frantically, he spots the safety net. A thick entanglement of vines that climbed from the base of the castle to his balcony door.

The young prince was unafraid of heights, but despite that his fingers shook as he grasped onto the thick gnarled wall, the implication of a fall from this height not escaping him.

But there was no choice, the fire still chasing behind him. So with a steadying breath, he leaped over the balcony fence, praying to any gods above that the vines would hold.

To his luck they did, and step by step he climbed down, each more sure than the last as he got closer to the ground.

But even still, the climb felt like an eternity. The thorns dug into his hands and feet, dead vines were interlaced with living ones. One wrong step and he would die.

But at long last, there were only perhaps 10 metres of climbing left.

He was going to make it! He was going to survive.

But then all of a sudden a hiss sounds from behind him, a rush of air flying by his ear before a flaming arrow embeds itself into the vines.

His feet slip first in the shock.

His arms follow, unable to support his weight.

Then all of a sudden he was falling.

Falling.

The last thing he could see was the viridian fletching of the arrow as he fell, and with it a darkness creeping around his heart that was never there before.

And then,

darkness.

Heavy boots echo through the throne room, a cloak of obsidian and scarlet flowing as the man walks.

The weight of the world sat heavy upon his shoulders, the crown of an empire heavy on his head. And yet his posture stood tall, never faltering. On his face sat a mask, piercing white and carved of bone into the shape of a skull. Perhaps even a skull itself.

Flanking his sides were the Lord Commander and the Advisor of the empire, while servants bowed to pay their respects on the sides of the room.

With a heavy sigh, the man sat down on the throne. The same one he saw his father sit on in the past.

‘What does it mean to be human’, someone had once asked him long ago. When he was just a boy, where the world around him was still warm and full of splendour, and the light of the sun still shone on the golden prince of the empire.

He had that answer now.

To be human was to survive. To claw your way through the dirt, past the cold grasp of death, past the infernal chains that wished to drag him through the hells. And to survive was to kill, for the world was cruel and treacherous, and there was no other way.

This is why people were whispering today as they looked at the crumpled form of a young woman in a scarlet robe lying at the base of the dais the Emperor’s throne sat upon.

Outsiders were unwelcome here, the borders closed long ago at the start of the war. Yet the young woman was seen crossing the border by the Emperor himself no less as he accompanied a patrol. In any other circumstance, she would be dead before a foot was within Empire lines.

But here she lay, face unfamiliar and thoroughly unwelcome. The air was thick in anticipation as the twitches of consciousness began to take hold.

She would have the answers the Emperor seeks. If they were inadequate, her blood would stain the carpet as so many others have done before.

You groan softly as you begin to wake up, the ground beneath you harder than any forest floor you had slept on in the trek to your destination.

Your head throbs as you sit up, the impact from the hilt of a sword still lingering.

Your eyes are blurry, likely from the injury but you try your best to blink it away blearily.

Before long your eyes clear, and they dart around in the unfamiliar setting. Stone walls that were charred black, denser near the floor that crawled up toward the sealing.

Tapestries that you had once read to be gold were now the scarlet red of blood, perhaps stained by your people's fallen.

No.

They were no longer your people, that you were sure of.

Finally, your eyes fall upon the imposing figure at the head of the room, his expression unreadable under that striking mask.

“Ah, she wakes at last,” the Emperor’s thunderous voice echoed. “Welcome to the Sol Aurelian Empire, give me one reason to not kill you where you lie.”

ETERNAL LOVE: hidden love brother's story, modern, kinda like frenemies to roomates to lovers?, i don't remember much fem lead and male lead are classmates in high school who used to not be fond of each other and later as adults things happen and he becomes her roommate because his apartment is like undergoing renovations or something? there's some misunderstandings and miscommunications but it's a really good read though the art is changed in this from hidden love. ongoing.

BRIDE OF HABAEK: fantasy, god falls for human sacrifice au??? do not remember much i read it long back but like the fem lead is offered as bride sacrifice to the water god and thrown into some well or something and when she wakes up she's in his realm and he's like a child? he also has his adult form but around her he's in child form and she does come across him in adult form but does not know it's him. i don't remember more details but it's slow burnnnn and interesting pretty different from the kdrama. ongoing or completed? no idea but there's a hella lot of chapters and it's black and white.

INSANELY GOOD !! the author clearly did a lot of research into the era this is set in -- early 1900s, during WW1 (which on its own is pretty unique like im not seeing a lot of historical manhwas set this time) and definitely has some very heavy themes. the mc time travels back to her twenties just before ww1 breaks out, after her marriage goes wrong w her husband and she dies from. falling down the stairs. RIP. i just think its really well written and the pacing is lovely - the author is not infodumping all the bad things that happened in one go and its working really well. also look at this guy

Since the prompts for @zexalmonth are based on tarot cards (which is super cool) I thought it would be fun to draw them like cards too! I tried to emulate the stats in the Anime with the frame. Also I don't think anyone would want to but you could theoretically use them as a phone background because of the canvas size!

Todays Card is "The Empress"! I wanted to draw Rio, because she has one of my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! Designs ever. I also like how she and Shark look related without being copies of each other. Hi! I'm really glad you enjoyed my previous headcanons! I'm touched that you think I'm a good writer 😊. I take pride in what I write so it makes me more than happy knowing that people enjoy what I do.

Know that I'm open to any type of ask as long as it's not non-con or like p*do/incest relationship. So please don't be scared to ask me anything.

On another note, since you asked for general headcanons, I went for what I believe would be like to date Kitana. I chose Kitana from mk11 cuz I wanted to play with the idea of being with the Kahn of Outworld.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this headcanons and for those who might hesitate to ask something, I don't bite I promise.

Kitana

Being the Kahn of Outworld means lots of work aka Kitana is always really busy.

Being the partner of the Kahn of Outworld means looking out for her and making sure she doesn't neglect herself.

Also you get to be her advisor.

Although you're an earthrealmer, Kitana would be delighted to teach you about the history of Outworld and most importantly Edenia.

Prepare yourself for long walks around the city as Kitana enjoys it.

Also Tea

If you don't like tea, Kitana would respect your preference, offering you something else to drink whenever it was tea time.

But if you do love tea, you two would have a hard time deciding which new tea you should try this time around.

She'd make tea from Outworld and, if you ever visit Earthrealm, you'd bring back some from there to show it to her.

As I said before, Kitana would be busy being Kahn but when she did have free time you'd find her reading somewhere or training.

Training will involve flirting and silly banter.

Do expect the visit of Kotal and Jade.

You'd get teased by Jade cuz she knows how infatuated you are of Kitana

Sheeva would also visit, and again being from Earthrealm, you'd be eager to talk with the Shokan.

Your eagerness to learn about those around you warms Kitana's heart.

Oh and Cooking.

Lots of cooking, even with servants cooking for the two of you, you'd pop in the kitchen from time to time to cook Earthrealm food.

She's not much of a cuddler but she'd ask for hugs from time to time.

Her favourite hug? Hugging you from behind while you're busy doing something.

She likes the feeling of you relaxing in her arms.

It was an uneventful day in Outworld. Most of the tasks were done and problems were taken care of. Which could only mean one time. Free time.

Sitting on a comfy chair located on one of the many balconies, arms leaning against a table, (y/n) propped their chin in the palm of their left hand. Their eyes were lovingly staring at the woman reading before them. Lost in their own thoughts, (y/n) failed to notice the brown eyes looking up at them.

"Is there something on my face?"

Wind brushed through Kitana's hair, making her look ethereal as the sun cast its soft yellow glow on her.

"Just admiring your beauty, love."

Rolling her eyes, Kitana went back to her book. However, her cheeks had taken a light shade of pink which pleased (y/n). No matter how much the Empress got to hear compliments from them, they always seemed to make her blush.

"Are you enjoying yourself?"

Chuckling, they leaned on the chair while stretching the now asleep arm they were propped against.

"Quite much but I'd say I'm enjoying you more"

The sound of a book closing echoed around the two of them before Kitana playfully kicked (y/n) foot underneath the table. Smirking, they reciprocated. One thing led to another and soon the two found themselves on training grounds, fighting as well as flirting. Let's just say that their free time wasn't spent relaxing.

I worry that someone will capitalize on HotD by adapting The Anarchy into a historical fiction movie/show.

There's so much potential there: Empress Matilda fighting to be queen regnant in her own right — with her bastard brother (one of the most powerful and respected lords in the kingdom) as her right hand man. Versus not just her cousin, but his queen consort, Queen Matilda. Whom at one point, when Stephen was captured, was leading the cause on her husband's behalf.

That's right, Matilda vs. Matilda. One fighting for her own power, another for her husband's. To be forever compared and contrasted as the good woman and the troublesome one. At one point not only heading their causes against each other, but negotiating with each other when each takes their highest ranking male hostage.

It would be fascinating to explore how these two women were treated differently, are still treated differently.

Even though a Queen Regnant was unheard of, there was also no law against it (sound familiar?) Which meant that she was subjected to misogyny in a lot of insidious, "It's not because she's a woman; it's because she's a BAD woman," kind of ways. People would point to other reasons to obfuscate their true objection. You know, because that's how the patriarchy works.

One of my favourite examples is when Stephen's faction argued that, because her mother spent so much time at a convent as a young woman, that actually made her practically a nun. Which meant she had not been eligible to wed and therefore Matilda was a bastard with no claim to inheritance — even though not only had her father willed the throne to her, but no one objected to the fact that her father had given lands and titles to many of his actual bastards.

Empress Matilda was held to incredibly impossible standards. Not just by the people around her, but by historians. I mean, before her first husband died, she ran the Holy Roman Empire not just as his regent but later as dowager empress to stabilize the transition. She was, for good reason, confident in her abilities and for that, probably the word most associated with her is "haughty." She eventually stepped aside for her own son so her faction could make a truce with Stephen — who would remain king but adopt her son as his heir above his own trueborn sons (a + point for Laenor/Rhaenyra there). And still in her old age, people would come away from interactions with her saying she had tyrant vibes.

So why am I worried?

Because in the name of doing a 'feminist' adaptation, they will absolutely make it the story of two Matildas who were secretly and impossibly best friends when they were younger and all they want is PEACE! Queen Matilda didn't even want the throne dammit! She just went along with her husband like a good woman. She just listened to the Church after that! Empress Matilda didn't want to fight for her throne! It was all her bastard brother, Robert Of Gloucester! He just wanted to be able to rule through his sister!

Women are peaceful creatures! If only men would listen to them! But not too much and they definitely shouldn't demand they be listened to.

Iirc, Saladin joined Caitl's forces to make up for Crow accidentally murdering a Psion? Have we heard from him lately? Is dad ok

Yes! Saladin is having the best time he's had in centuries. He quickly rose among the ranks (went from Bracus to Valus) and serves on Caiatl's war council. He is having a blast honestly, because Caiatl and her soldiers are really the closest thing to Iron Lords. He even broadcasts Iron Banner for them and they cheer for us!

Caiatl is super invested in Iron Banner and we'll see some changes to it this season which is explained in lore as Saladin and Caiatl colaborating on new rules.

He also had plenty of voice lines in Season of the Haunted at the end of Containment activity. For example:

Caiatl: Valus Forge. How fares our defensive perimeter around the Leviathan?

Lord Saladin: The blockade holds. Nothing in, nothing out. Your forces guard the H.E.L.M. as if it were part of their fleet.

Caiatl: You are a member of my War Council. What manner of empire would I lead if your soldiers were not afforded the same protection as my own?

Lord Saladin: An empire doomed to ruin. We stand together, Empress.

Another one that makes me happy for wolf dad:

Caiatl: Another rousing success. Tell me: will we ever see you smile again, Zavala?

Nightmare of Safiyah: You can't coax a smile out of him. I've tried. He's too much like Lord Saladin that way.

Caiatl: And yet, I've seen Saladin smile. It is a glorious thing.

Also a playlist with updated Iron Banner dialogue that reflects Saladin living with Caiatl's fleet. Some faves:

This one when you lose: "The Cabal have a term for such a display: "uro'ok nur." You don't want to know what it translates to." LMAO. They taught him swears first, as it should be.

This one when you get heavy ammo: "I just heard a Centurion cheer for you." We have fans :)

This one on match start: "Caiatl's Gladiators whisper about you between matches. They think you're unkillable. Prove them right." More fans! I love that they watch us and cheer, of course they would love our Crucible.

Caiatl recounted some of this back in Risen at the end of the season. Her comments have my favourite part:

He has also started a version of the Iron Banner aboard my flagship, at my request. There were many volunteers for his training. He calls his Legionaries "Iron War Beasts."

He trains them and calls them Iron War Beasts.... Instead of Iron Wolves. There were a lot of soldiers that did not respect him at first because he's human, some even went as far as to desert Caiatl's fleet. But those that remain apparently trust him and love him a lot and think it's an honor to be trained by him. They wouldn't volunteer for training otherwise. And Saladin has an endearing nickname for them.
