When the daughter of THE Martin Luther King Jr. tells you not to spread propaganda in his name, we think it’s best to just stop.
It’s time to cancel the Hollywood experiment that was Amy Schumer.

I've said this many times before -if you call yourself a feminist and you're silent about ANY person being oppressed around the world by violent dictators/regimes/governments (among many injustices) you're not a feminist. If your feminism isn't intersectional, it's not feminism -it's white feminism. If you don't know about or aren't talking about Sudan and the rampant sexual violence against Sudanese women by a terrorist genocidal militia -then GET TO KNOW and start talking about it because this is horrifying. I'm so tired of seeing mostly white women come to the frontlines of issues when it only benefits or impacts them. I'm beyond embarrassed for you.

Genuinely I think the biggest actual theoretical terminology vs layman's understanding linguistic failure of the last decade is the way the word "privilege" has been ground to dust.
To have "privilege" is to have benefits in life granted to you by institutions of systemic power that in turn place you in a position of power or status over others in a way that is in line with and benefits the institution.
"Privilege" is also absolutely not cut and dry. Institutions of power don't take turns dissecting people into individual parts to decide how to oppress or give benefits to people at any given moment. They treat them as a sum of their parts. That is quite literally the foundational core of Intersectional theory.
But that's a lot of words that require you to actually think about sociological concepts and attempt to understand them in-depth. Unfortunately though, people love simplicity and they hate social sciences - especially theory in social sciences that have been proposed by anyone who isn't White. Which is extremely, dishearteningly ironic in a conversation on privilege.

“When white women are confronted with the possibility they can be perpetrators, and not only victims, of oppressive actions and they burst out crying, antiracist work grinds to a halt. A white woman sobs, and the room falls to her feet. These tears seemingly perform a self-baptism. They cleanse the sufferer of any past wrongs and invest her with a martyred authority flowing from the realm of allegedly indisputable truth: her own hurt feelings. Some of the sanctifying innocence widely afforded to white women when they cry can be traced back to an original wellspring: the inkpot of Harriet Beecher Stowe.

it’s really funny that taylor has adopted a reputation for being well-read and book smart because every time she opens her mouth about a real world issue i am forcibly reminded that she stopped going into school after 10th grade (her words), and even then, her formal education was provided by the state of tennessee.

because… what?
to frame patriarchy as this inherent thing that has ALWAYS existed and is as naturally occurring as a blue sky, is just not true. and to frame capitalism as this thing that is inherent is also just… not true. i could never unpack in just a post why those claims are ahistorical, but i will say that it is fucking nuts to look at an issue of capitalism and say “yeah it’s a problem, but, well, i’m just going to win at it 🤩” and call it feminism.
and that is the problem with white feminism. it just turns into idiots trying to speak on single topics and cherry pick their agendas, even though, in a sociopolitical or socioeconomic sense, it doesn’t work like that. you cannot talk about feminism without discussing western society, organized religion, global superpowers, communities of color, colonization, climate change, corporations, monopolies and more. anything less is useless at best and misleading at worst.
(because when you don’t, you get brain dead hot takes like “patriarchy has existed since the dawn of time, and so has money!”)
it’s like how greta thunberg said that she started as just a climate change activist, but now she’s basically a total anti-capitalist advocating for a complete disruption and overthrow to the way the world currently runs because she realized that advocating for that and advocating for climate justice are one and the same.
and if you criticize taylor swift for talking out of her ass, you’ll be hit with brainwashed swifties throwing out the word “misogyny” or “you’d never ask another celebrity this” or “you’re holding her to her own standards” because they’ve been hearing taylor’s bullshit feminism for so long that now they’ve adopted it as their own
taylor’s feminism will NEVER surpass the self-serving role it fills in her life because to do so would mean confronting the bigotry she has upheld, the questionable people she spends her time with, the wealth she is hoarding, her impact on the environment, and much more.
which is… fine, i guess. she doesn’t have to be a good feminist. but in that case she needs to pick a side and shut her fucking mouth about it. because letting her romp around spewing out the most egocentric and individualistic interpretations of it is boring and unhelpful.

It’s not lost on me that when someone talks about how “Beyoncé is overrated” or that she’s “not that talented” I’m supposed to respect other people’s music opinions, but if I say Taylor Swift’s music isn’t my style or I don’t care for her that much it’s like I said the most heinous thing in the world and I don’t support other women.

Honestly, honestly!! White women have always been taking up space in Hollywood and awards shows. The moment women of colour even get an ounce of recognition, White women won't even allow us to celebrate our achievements.

One of my problems with white feminism is the fact that it doesn’t focus on dismantling systems of exploitation, but instead aims to be part of those structures, creating a concept of ‘winning’ at the capitalistic power system, which is designed to oppress. For example, female CEOs are often used as an example of success, which is basing how ‘feminist’ an organization/person/society is by how well it/they perform under capitalism.
This can also work in other ways as well, such as with queer and trans representation centering those who are successful only in a way that follows the path laid out by the current system.
All liberation will only work if you leave the capitalistic framework.
This kind of feminism had its place in history (think the suffragette movement) but we need to move forwards for meaningful change.

look, I saw Barbie (2023) and all I wanna say is I wrote this article in 2020 and I've yet to be proven wrong:
"The empowerment of white women should not be a tool for the maintenance of white supremacy in our diversifying cultural narratives."

it is a genuine problem that an attribute of white feminism is that men of colour can't criticize white women's racism without being accused of misogyny
hell, women of colour can't criticize white women's racism without being accused of misogyny

White feminism is when there are a gazillion gifs made of Taylor Swift attending the Golden Globes 2k24 for doing abso-fucking-lutely nothing but none for Lily Gladstone the first Indigenous American woman to win a fucking Golden Globe. Go girl, give us nothing 😘✌🏼

@/kittiearie on tiktok wrote this caption on her video: "When the sundown sisters' feminism is being upset Margot Robbie wasn't nominated for an Oscar but silent on how women and girls in Palestine don't have access to pads, tampons, contraceptive pills and other hygeine products while mothers are having their children without anesthetics."
some of white western feminist advocacy boils down to viewing issues (problematically so) as one-dimensional. their praxis never includes reflexivity, accountability, and intersectionality; while they ensure that their OWN reproductive health rights are never threatened, they vastly ignore so many people suffering in the world just because it doesn't directly impact them -looking at their priorities is just always so shameless and despicable.
