Thinking about Harry being multilingual and not realizing he's switching between multiple languages when he's a toddler so it's like all the adults trying to work together to put together the puzzle that makes up his all of his sentences of French from Reg and Sirius, English from everyone, Punjabi from Effie and James, Urdu from Monty and James, and a little bit of Welsh from Remus

Eventually they all accidentally become multilingual thanks to Harry

Harry knows a lot of languages, in theory, but he’s only fluent in English like;

He can completely understands Punjabi because that’s the Potters’ native language but he can’t quite grasp speaking it. He picks up French terms of endearments/cuss words from Regulus and Sirius. He knows welsh cuss words as well as philosophical translations because of Remus. He can playfully imitate Italian pick up lines because of Barty. He knows to hide when he hears Swahili because Dorcas only reverts back to it when she’s completely pissed at someone. But everyone around him speaks English the majority of the time, so that’s what he speaks.

Then he gets to Hogwarts and meets Draco Malfoy who can hold a conversation in just about any language someone speaks to him in and fuck, Harry never thought that French was romantic. He’s never seen Punjabi as alluring before. He didn’t consider Italian as attractive.

He spends the summer begging members of his family to teach him more of their languages so he can go back and prove to Draco that he is stupid in more than one language.

hc that peter knows a bunch of languages bc he already grew up knowing 3 languages (both of this parents know languages other than English) and he picks up languages really easily, so a bunch of his friends will all be speaking in theyre first languages and Peter will just casually respond in the same language and they'll js have to do a double take for a moment

how do we feel about half French half Thai Evan, his skin brown and his hair blond/white.

Barty had always known a lot of languages (smart mf) but made a bet with Reg he would never learn French. He's on the Italian team.

So when he meets Evan the only way to go is learn Thai (not even Evan is fluent in it btw).

The next time they meet he asks him to help him do a stick n poke on himself. it's a sentence (and a song).

'love at first sight'

James sat on the Gryffindor common room couch twirling his wand, trying to get Regulus’ attention. Regulus, reading a book, did not look up.

James turned to Lily, who was sitting next to him.

“Reggie’s ignoring me again” he whined.

“He’s just reading, love. You’ve been with him all morning”, she replied.

James rolled his eyes and threw himself into the couch. Regulus continued to read, as he was very invested in his French copy of The Lady of the Camellias. He had to focus a bit harder to read the French so he blocked everything else out.

After what James would describe as forever, Regulus spoke up—not looking away from his book.

“Jamie?”

James froze. No one’s ever called him that before.

He thought about how it made him feel. He liked it. He couldn’t understand why, but he felt comfortable in it. Just as comfortable as when someone called him James. He twisted in his seat and felt his cheeks start to blush.

He internally panicked, but responded naturally.

“Yes?”

“Tu es belle ma chérie”

James’ face now fell to a full blush. He looked lovingly at Regulus.

“I don’t know what you just said but I love you too.”

Spring Break (1/1) (jegulus)

"James I don't want to be baby about this but I really do not want to go France this spring," Regulus said looking up from his laptop where he had been planning out their yearly trip.

"What? You love going to France!" James replied a bit shocked. The first few years were nice but James really had to be dragged the last few years. It was a lovely vacation but it usually brought up a lot of things for Regulus and not that James' minded, it's just he wished Regulus would pick anywhere else for their vacation so he might actually enjoy himself and relax. The fact that he didn't want to go felt to James like something was wrong.

Regulus sighed in response. "I just don't want to be miserable the whole time," he explained. James wasn't going to say it but wow the insight and awareness of that comment blew him away.

James smiled fondly. "Well love where would you like to go?" He asked.

After a long pause, James watching the cogs spinning in Regulus brain, the courage building in his breath, Regulus tipped his head to the side: "Do you want to go home?"

James' eyes went wide and a happiness he didn't know he was lacking bloomed in his chest. He couldn't contain the way the thought of going to India warmed him from head to toe. They used to go every fall, but since James' parents died they hadn't been.

"Could we?" Is all James can respond.

"Of course darling," Regulus said reaching his hand across the table, an invitation for James to grab it.

"Do you want to go for longer than just our normal one week?" Regulus adds as James squeezes his hand. He looks like he is going to cry with joy.

"Did you read my diary or something? How did you know I missed home so much?" James said getting up to move around the table to kiss Regulus.

"Maybe I missed it too," Regulus said allowing himself to be pulled into James' arms.

"I'm going to call my auntie!" James said as he pulled away. He very nearly skipped out of the kitchen and Regulus couldn't be happier about this change of plans.

Does the entire marauders fandom agree that Regulus and Sirius speak french? (and that Sirius doesn't mention it at all)

it is best to use real french slang/phrases or using google translations when writing a fic.

because personally i’d prefer like being able to use actual expressions but my friend said it would make it harder for people (i would put the translations probably right next to it to make it easier??)

knowing french makes me want to be able to actually…. use it i guess

I would love to write a marauders fic of the Black family always speaking French at home so Sirius and Regulus grew up speaking mostly in French but of course they speak English at Hogwarts- except when Regulus comes along he just doesn’t, he speaks exclusively in French and it gets to the point where everyone including Sirius is questioning if he even knows English because Sirius was required to know how to speak in both French and English and their education should’ve been the same right? But now that he’s thinking about it whenever they went to dinner parties as kids and everyone was speaking English he can’t remember Regulus ever saying anything… Sirius really starts to question if he was just taught English because he was the heir and they didn’t bother with Regulus because he wasn’t meant to really do anything and they decided teaching Sirius was hard enough. In reality Regulus is perfectly capable of both understanding and speaking English he just doesn’t want to. As a child he was too shy to say anything and by the time he got to Hogwarts he’s too jaded to have any desire to speak to anyone so he spends his first days speaking exclusively in French and when a rumor starts that he doesn’t understand English he just runs with it (and also uses it as an eavesdropping opportunity since people talk pretty freely around him thinking that he doesn’t know what they’re saying), even the teachers believe it and teach him a spell that translates spoken and written words (something like that has to exist in the wizard uhh world) so that he can understand the lectures. They don’t know that once they stop casting it for him he actually never uses it because he doesn’t need it

Anyway all that to say I would love to write it but I will not be doing that because I took one year of high school French and retained absolutely none of it so that would be embarrassing for me to personally attempt but if any French-speaking or simply bolder individuals than me want to steal this idea I greatly encourage it and only request that you tag me in it because I want to read it

Regulus was singing to Harry. He was sitting crisscross on the floor, their little toddler in his lap, and Regulus was holding Harry's hands to tip him from side to side and to the clearly choreographed hand movements. There was a book of fish on the table that Harry just loved and well, he wouldn't really let Regulus stop singing the song.

From context clues, James understood the song was about a little fish getting eaten by bigger fish. It wasn't a very happy song despite the cheery tune, but it made his son giggle and smile so what did James know.

After hearing the 3rd round of the song, James came into the living room with a second round of morning coffee. Regulus smiled brightly at him, but as he stopped singing, Harry turned to look at his father's face, tipping his head side to side and humming the tune. "More Papa, encore!" The little boy said.

So Regulus sang again.

"Is that song French baby shark?" James mused after the song was done again.

"Well this song has been around since I was a child, so if anything that song is stolen from this," Regulus said raising his nose in the air. Ever the proper child of his parents.

James just raised an eyebrow at him.

Regulus sighed, "yes, it is French baby shark."

James laughed, then he held his arms out. "Here, time to switch out," James said and Regulus passed Harry to James.

With big green eyes, Harry looked at James, "petit poisson," Harry said and then laughed. He always laughed if he spoke French to James, almost as if he thought it was funny that he knew James didn't understand.

James looked at his son and shook his head no. Before Harry could jump out of his arms back to Regulus, James asked playfully, "baby shark?" And Harry clapped his hands in response.

Regulus laughed as his son quickly switched the similar English version, grateful for his family, and happy the next 19 rounds of a ocean related songs would be in James.
