All Along [The Casita]
Summary: Just one of the days of the life in the walls of Casita...with a twist.
Category: Genfic, Pre-movie
Warnings: Angst, Abuela being an ass
~~~~~~~~~~~~
10 years.
It had been almost 10 years living alone in the walls of Casita. And despite being housed in a magical paradise, the years weren't kind.
The bags under his eyes had grown deeper and darker, his hair growing more and more unkempt, his eyes losing the light they once held.
And yet no one knew.
Or at least he thought.
Just like every other day, he lay haphazardly across the crumbling recliner catching some much needed z's. An annoying crack of sunlight shone through a gap in the boards, disturbing his slumber. Bruno groaned and buried his face into the old fabric of the chair. It was too early. But yet again, time was only an illusion.
A rat scampered up from the floor, giving a small squeak once it reached Bruno's sleeping form. Not receiving a response, it lightly nudged the side of his face and earned mumbled gibberish in response. It tried again, harder this time. Bruno turned his head, eyes squinting in the bright morning light. The small mammal motioned its head to the boarded mural from where the sun had been peeking in.
Bruno slowly blinked, trying to process the nonverbal cue. To reinforce the rat's message, a soft clatter of porcelain dishes could be heard beyond the walls. Bruno's stomach grumbled in anticipation.
He slowly sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, sending the rat back to the floor. Too tired to notice, he swung his feet to stand and sent the poor thing flying across the room. He opened his eyes widely upon realizing his clumsy mistake. Bruno's eyes shot to his small companion and he carefully made his way over to the other side of the room. With extra caution, he picked up the dazed rat.
"Oh mi dulce Rosalita, ¿estás bien? Lo siento mi cariño. I'm so damn clumsy." Bruno said softly.
Rosalita blinked and wiggled her nose before giving a small squeak in response. Bruno sighed in relief.
"What on earth was that clatter? I heard that all the way from my room, Juli. Everything okay?"
Bruno froze. Of course he had to give himself away to his family, again. It's not like this hadn't happened before. It's bound to happen in a quiet community when you live inside the guts of your house, literally. But over the years, he had grown to be more careful. Especially after he had almost been caught a few times. He was lucky there always seemed to be a distraction right after to cover him up.
"I have no idea. Maybe some kids rough housing nearby?" He heard Julieta reply.
Bruno peered through the gap in the boards, giving him a small glance into casita’s kitchen. Julieta was just finishing up breakfast, as she did every morning. It was Agustín who had come to check in on her. He made a face and shrugged, seeming to agree with Julieta's explanation. It was a quiet enough town, so it wasn’t illogical.
“Everybody almost ready?” She asked, beginning to clean up.
“I think so,” Agustín said. “I can check though if you’d like.”
“Would you, cariño? That would be great.” Julieta said.
“Sure, no problema amor.” Agustín replied.
As he left to check on the others, Mirabel came rushing into the room towards the family plates.
“Good morning Mira, sleep well?” Julieta asked.
“Sí, a little too well. Lo siento, mamá. I guess I slept in.” Mirabel said.
“It’s quite alright, everyone needs it every once in a while. I would take care of setting the table if needed.” Julieta said.
“No má it’s fine, really. I have to help somehow..”
Bruno looked on with a heavy heart. The whole reason he had left in the first place was to make Mirabel’s life easier. Even if it was a little bit. But even with his disappearance, he could see that it apparently wasn’t enough. Mirabel still felt pressure to live up to his mother’s impossible expectations, and still felt like she wasn’t enough. She was still the scapegoat, the one everyone blamed when things went wrong. The thing Bruno had been trying to prevent. It’s obvious his prophecy would have made things much worse, but he thought that his mother would have been at least a little more forgiving of her granddaughter. Apparently not.
Julieta’s voice brought him from his thoughts. “Did you happen to see how everyone else was doing upstairs?”
“Everyone’s pretty much ready. It’s just..” Mirabel scoffed. “Señorita princesa Isabela is hogging up the bathroom for some reason this morning. Can’t she just grow a waterfall or something to wash up? It’s not like everyone else needs to shower or anything.”
Shower.. ¡Mierda! He forgot to shower! And if he didn’t keep up with his rituals.. Well. He didn’t want to think about it. Bruno rushed to the small cracked basin at the other side of the room and quickly splashed water onto his raggedy face. He blindly reached for the soap and began scrubbing himself as quickly as he could manage, knowing he didn’t have much time before his family came down for breakfast. Even though he knew no one would see him or notice his presence, Abuela had always made it known how important it was to have a specific routine. And what the consequences were if you didn’t follow it.
Bruno Madrigal was a grown man. He washed his own clothes, he knew how to make a meal if he had to. But what Abuela said, you would follow. And if you didn’t? Well may God bless you. And even when Abuela was long gone, Bruno was sure the family would still be mindlessly following these habits. They just stuck with you.
As quick as Bruno had begun to bathe, he was already finished. And just in time for him to join his family at his usual place behind the mural. He made a sign of the cross as he sat down and bowed his head in prayer alongside his family. Everyone listened in silence to Abuela’s prayer, waiting in bated breath to dig into their meal. After a brief moment of silence, Abuela sat at the head of the table, signaling it was okay to begin eating.
For a few minutes, all that was heard throughout the dining area was the clanking of silverware and soft sounding of eating. One would think the absence of talking would be unsettling, but it was actually quite comforting for Bruno. It reminded him that words weren’t needed to bond, that the family was still there; without all the usual chaos. He himself had begun to dig into his half of the bunuelo, saving the other half for his small friends. He exhaled in amusement. He could already hear his sisters and his mother if they saw the sight before him. Rats nibbling away at leftovers, on the table. ..And Bruno eating scraps from the night before.
He frowned and looked back at the family through the openings in the mural before glancing back at his “meal”. His stomach growled from the lack of food, causing him to look down. Before his thoughts could spiral deeper, Mirabel’s voice brought him back to reality.
“Hey mami, is it okay if I help out again in the village today? Like I did the other day? I was hoping maybe-”
“Mirabel, you know Julieta needs to focus on helping the community. You should know better than to interrupt that.” Abuela interrupted, void of much emotion.
Mira’s face fell. “I know but, it worked last time! I promise I won’t get in the way-” She said.
Abuela held a hand up, interrupting her again. “That’s enough.”
Bruno helplessly looked on with a fiery, heavy heart. If he wasn’t such a coward, maybe right then and there he would break through the mural and tell his mother off right there. But just like when he left, he just watched in silence. He kicked himself hard in the shin and held back tears.
“Má.. leave Mira alone. She is free to help as much as she wants. She’s never in the way.” Julieta said, placing a hand on her daughter’s shoulders.
“But Juli, you mustn't be distracted-” Abuela began.
“I won’t be.” Julieta said firmly.
There was a brief, tense silence before Abuela sighed and resigned to Julieta’s request. It was a while before the usual chit-chat resumed at the table.
Bruno felt absolutely horrible. He was glad at least someone stood up for his sobrina, but maybe if he had been there… maybe if he lied ten years ago and took responsibility for the vision.. He couldn’t help but think that maybe things would be different. He punched his arm in both frustration and as a punishment of sorts.
Tu idiota estupido.. You really thought you leaving would make things better for your sobrina? Now look what you’ve done, you’ve made it wor-
“What is that noise? Did you all hear that?”
Bruno froze in place and smacked a hand over his mouth. He was muttering his thoughts out loud. Again. His heart hammered in his chest; he didn’t dare take another breath.
“Oh, it was Mariano. I think he’s at the door.” Dolores said.
Bruno slowly lowered his hand from his mouth and swiftly moved to the space in the mural boards, furrowing his eyebrows and squinting in the morning light. And sure enough, Dolores was going to the front door. No.. she wouldn’t-
But she didn’t stop there. She went outside and closed the door behind her. The family looked on in silence for a long moment before slowly resuming their previous conversations.
Bruno blinked. What just.. happened? Did that really happen?
After a few moments Dolores returned, silently closing the front door behind her before she came back into view. The family turned attentively in her presence.
“Is everything okay?” Julieta asked.
Dolores squeaked and nodded. “Sí, he just wanted to know when Isa would be available later. I let him know we will all be headed out al pueblo soon.”
“Perfecta!” Isabela said, excitedly standing up from her seat to hug Dolores. “Gracías prima!”
Isa stopped for a moment and recomposed herself, smoothing out her dress.
“I’ll take care of my plate, Abuela.” She said calmly, returning to the table.
“Thank you Isabela; much appreciated.” Abuela said, finishing up herself. “We have another big day ahead of us today, I want everyone downstairs and ready within a half an hour.”
A mixed chorus of “Yes abuela”’s and “Yes mamá”’s filled the dining room before everyone slowly trickled out one by one to clean their dishes. It wasn’t long before the only one remaining on the lowest floor of Casita was Dolores. She had been sitting timidly, playing with her leftover food. Once she finished chatting with Mira and made sure the coast was clear, she wordlessly turned to the family portrait.
Bruno receded into his ruana and inched backwards, as if she could see right through the painting. He again waited in bated breath. After a few tense moments, she broke the silence.
“You have to be more careful tío. I don’t know how long I can keep covering for you. I won’t be long before they.. you know.” She said quietly.
Bruno’s eyes widened at the realization. All this time, she knew. I mean, yes there was the food she brought to him occasionally, and she always had seemed to cover for him, but she never really said anything. Not until now. He just figured she thought he was lingering around somewhere or something, not that she knew he was still there, within the walls. His heart swelled, despite it hammering anxiously in his ribcage.
“And yes, I knew. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. Just be more careful? Please?” She answered quietly.
Bruno nodded before remembering she had super hearing, not x-ray vision. “Sí.”
She squeaked quietly before hurrying off to take care of her plate and catch up with the rest of the family. Bruno lingered for a moment before turning back to his cuartito. For the first time in a while, Bruno felt loved in his own four walls.
When all you want is to sleep comfortably,
A/N: apologies for disappearing for so long but I had a lot to do for college. I'll try to start posting again but I can't make too many promises.
Phases
"Goodnight mi flor," Julieta whispered kissing Isabela's head.
Once julieta left, Isabela tossed and turned in her bed, trying to get comfortable but unfortunately she got wrapped up in her loose nightgown.
She groaned before she sat up and yanked the pink fabric over her head and tossed it to the floor by her bed. As soft as it was it was too loose and kept getting tangled around Isabela. Mere moments after the annoying fabric had landed on the floor the eldest madrigal had fallen into a deep sleep.
Down the hall Dolores was getting ready for bed when her mother came in to check on her and tell her goodnight.
"Mi bebé, I came to say goodnight," Pepa said stepping into Dolores's room.
"Mama?" Dolores said emerging from her closet.
"I'm right here lola, come sit," Pepa said patting the 12 year olds bed.
"can I ask something?" Dolores asked sitting on her bed.
"ask away mi vida," Pepa said
"it's nearly my time, and I was curious about a few things I've been feeling," Dolores said shyly, still unfamiliar with her cycle despite having it for almost a year.
Pepa assured her that having questions was normal and answered them, remembering how she had to go digging for this knowledge on her own.
"Its perfectly normal to get cramps in your thighs from your period, trust me tia Julieta said it herself," Pepa assured tucking her eldest into bed.
"Ok mamá goodnight," Dolores yawned curling into her blankets.
Pepa kissed her niña's head, and closed her door with a light click. Before Dolores truly settled in she peeled the yellow fabric of her nightgown off and then snuggled into her blankets clutching her fluffy owl to her bare chest. The feeling was odd since she had never slept without a nightgown before. Dolores enjoyed the feeling and curled into her blanket and fell asleep within minutes
The next morning Pepa was in charge of waking up the kids. Camilo and Mirabel had a sleepover in Camilo's room so Pepa gave a knock, then stepped in to get the pair woken up and dressed. Once she'd sent them down to Julieta she made her next stop at Luisa's room. She opened the door and gently patted Luisa's hip until said girl had finally opened her eyes, "buenos dias tia," she sleepily mumbled reaching out to hug Pepa.
Luisa was always her favourite to wake, because Luisa loved cuddles in the morning so she could have a moment to spend with her sobrina wrapped up in happy cuddles.
"Buenos dias mi sobrinita, I need to wake the other girls, get dressed and I'll be back to do your hair," Pepa said sitting Luisa down on the short stool by her dressing table. Believe it or not, Luisa is light for her age, even with her gift. And she takes full advantage of her light build. She loves when Julieta lifts her onto the counter to sit while she makes arepas, or when Agustin gives her piggyback rides. She especially loves when Pepa wakes her up and carries her around her room for a little while while they cuddle, and sometimes if Pepa hasn't dressed, she'll help Pepa pick an outfit, all while Pepa holds onto her in a soft warm cuddle.
"Ok tia," Luisa yawned in the affirmative, and Pepa left to go wake the eldest two.
She started with Isabela,since she was right beside Lu.
A knock at the door proved that Isabela was definitely her mother's daughter sleeping like a rock until she either got up on her own or was forced awake by someone else.
With that Pepa opened the door to Isabela's room. She walked towards the bed and isabela had shifted in her sleep tossing the cover off herself. Usually Pepa wouldn't be surprised by this but when the blanket was thrown away from Isabela all she saw was skin. No nightgown, no camisole. Just Isabela's bare chest, which wasn't a big deal since it was Pepa waking her this morning, but what if it had been tio Felix, or her father. None the less she woke Isabela up, and Isa immediately pulled her sheet to her chest as her cheeks flushed in embarrassment. Isabela didn't say a word at first, but she didn't have to because Pepa was the one to break the silence.
"Isa, there's nothing to be embarrassed over, trust me. It's just something of a phase you go through, I will say, you got lucky this morning since it was me, but be careful when you sleep like this ok," Pepa said reassuring Isa that sleeping in her underwear or fully nude was normal, just to be careful and choose when she slept like this wisely.
"You get dressed, I'm going to wake up Lola," Pepa told noticing that roses bloomed on Isabela's chest for her to hide in until she had an actual top or dress on.
"Ok tia," Isabela said as Pepa left her room.
She took the short walk to Dolores's room and gently opened the door. Her daughter was wearing her head wrap and was sleeping soundly. Her blanket was thrown off her top half much like Isabela, but she was sleeping on her stomach so her chest was pressed into her mattress.
"Lola," Pepa said quietly as she coaxed Dolores to wake up.
"Buenos dias mama" Dolores said as she reached to her right to grasp Pepa's hand and give it a squeeze, a little habit she has picked up as a child.
"Buenos dias mi niña, sleep well?" Pepa asked trying to brace the subject of her sleepwear, or lack thereof.
"I slept well mama," Dolores said sitting up, she pulled the yellow nightgown discarded the night before over her head as she pushed her head wrap up to uncover her eyes.
"Seems you did, is this the first time you've done this or just the first time I caught you," Pepa asked being a bit more straightforward since Dolores had no shame or embarassment about her body. Yet.
"First time I did it, it felt weird, but in a good way," Dolores said stretching.
"Well, little piece of advice, be careful of when you do that, you got lucky since it was my turn to wake you this morning" Pepa said
"Ok mama, I'll make sure," Dolores said crawling out of her blankets to sit on the side of her bed.
"Alright, come down for breakfast when you're dressed," Pepa said giving Dolores a light hug.
She returned to Luisa and fixed her hair with a warm smile on her face, her thoughts racing with a desperate need to talk to Julieta. Once Luisa's hair was done, she and Pepa made their way downstairs.
Luisa was soon scooping Isabela, Dolores, Camilo, and Mirabel up from the living room to take them outside to play. Thankfully giving Pepa enough time alone to talk to Julieta, but not before a coffee.
"What's wrong mi hermana? I know you've got something on your mind," Julieta asked stirring together some cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle over the apples she'd just cut.
"Isa and Lola are going through that phase," Pepa grimaced
"Which one? We have a whole alphabet of teenage phases," Julieta said refilling Pepa's coffee mug.
"Let me put it this way, their sleepwear has changed," Pepa grimaced
"Ooh, that phase," Julieta sighed, "should we talk to them? I mean we went through the dormido desnudo phase when we were their age," Julieta reasoned pulling warm arepas off her cooktop.
"I know, but what do we tell them, if we tell them its wrong then they'll get the wrong idea of it and think its bad, its perfectly normal, but if we tell them that then they'll still do it, and we won't know when they do it, and that could lead to some awkward conversations or incidents." Pepa told weighing their options.
"I've got an idea," Julieta said
In the garden Luisa Isabela Camilo Mirabel and Dolores were kicking a ball around, when Dolores quirked her ear and said
"Cmon Isa Tia's calling us in," Dolores grabbed her older prima's wrist and ran inside with her, she had no idea why she grabbed her wrist but she did. Plus it was funny to hear isa yelling to slow down behind her
"You called?" Dolores said once the two were in the kitchen with Julieta and Pepa,
"Si, now its come to my attention that the pair of you are sleeping without your nightgowns?" Julieta asked
Both girls looked at each other and then back to Julieta embarrassed to admit their secret.
Julieta took that as a yes, and continued
"It's perfectly normal to experiment with sleeping desnudo, Pepa and I did it when we were your age. But to keep any awkward situations from happening, after breakfast Pepa and I will show you how to make a sign for your doors, that way in the morning, whoever has to wake you up will know to let Pepa or myself wake you." Julieta told to the blushing girls
"Can we make them now while the others are outside?" Dolores piped up
"Si mi nina, I'll go get everything you two will need, go ahead and sit," Pepa said going upstairs to grab her art supplies.
When Pepa returns with pens paper and string, she shows Dolores and Isabela what to do and leaves them to make their own designs. At Least now Pepa wouldn't be shocked to walk into one of their rooms and see an excess of skin
"Thank goodness mamá doesn't wake the kids, Isa would die if she did, and I truly dont like that isa has to uphold a perfect persona all the time when mama is around her," Julieta sighed continuing making breakfast
"I know, maybe we should let her sleep in one day when we know mama will be busy and give her a day to be herself, " pepa suggested
"You're a genius Pepa. We can do that probably tomorrow, mama has some plans with her amigas. We can keep the kids at home and make a day of it," Julieta said as she turned the sausages over
About a year later Luisa had her own sign to hang having also been caught, by Isabela.
"Look Julieta, Isa's showing Lu how to make the little door sign I showed her how to make," Pepa said as a small rainbow sprouted above her head at her nieces' interaction.
"It's good to see her talking to Lu and Mira, mama has her drawn so tight it's rare these days," Julieta said peeking out from behind her book. "Especially now since mama has her yanked tighter than ever with the perfect persona. I really hate that she had to stop wearing her favorite blue dresses in favor of more elegant pink ones to show her maturity"
Pepa agreed and continued smiling over her sobrinas.
Mirabel didn't quite get the chance to go through this phase at the same age her sisters did, due to Antonio being in the nursery with her. But when casita was rebuilt and she finally got her own room she was caught, her nightgown tossed to the chair and her chest against a pillow as she slept soundly.
"Mira, wake up," Julieta said.
The 16 year old slowly woke but once he brain had caught up she yanked her blanket to her chest.
"Mama! I-I" Mira studdered trying to explain
"Mi bebé, calm down, it's nothing to be ashamed about. All the girls went through it, even me and your Tia Pepa," Julieta told handing Mirabel her gown.
"Really?" Mirabel asked
"Yes really. You wouldn't believe how many times I caught both your sisters sleeping on their backs with their chests in the air. And honestly, I don't blame them. Sometimes sleeping nude is a nice change of pace" Julieta said. "After breakfast, ask Isa to show you how to make the sign for your door, she showed Lu about four years ago."
Mira smiled and straightened her gown before heading downstairs.
"it's about time you danced on the wild side. Come on we can all make new ones together, mine just broke and Luisa and Lola's are on the verge of breaking" Julieta heard her eldest say.
Things changed after the fall of Casita, and Julieta has to say seeing her daughters act like sisters again is the best change of them all.
HEADCANON: Dolores, Isabela and Luisa were close when they were children. Two older girls treated younger Luisa like a doll and their kinda experimental bunny as they tried out hairdos or first make-ups on her, and little Luisa loved it so much. They always said Luisa was their little doll princess. It changed over the years, and Luisa missed these times. Post-movie girls go back to that little forgotten tradition and try things on already adult Luisa and she loves it as much as she loved it being a few years old girl.
Quote
She looked at her daughters when one of them made a sound as she set about winding Bruno, praying neither of them were waking again, but her fears began to settle and her heart swelled as she watched Pepa simply cuddle closer to her hermana to share her warmth with her thumb in her mouth. Oh, both of them looked like little angels now and one would never think they had been wailing some time ago. All three of them were incredibly hard work, she could never deny that and there was no doubt in her mind that they would continue to be as they grew up, but they were her world and she cherished them. It took a little time to wind her son, but he eventually let out a little burp and she sighed with relief at seeing his eyelids were beginning to droop when she moved him back from her shoulder. Now that all of them had full bellies and were more than contenta to go back to sleep, perhaps she would have the chance to actually get up and start getting ready to face the day ahead. It was going to be a long one, she could tell, what with a number of homes still in the process of being built in town and some things she needed to oversee, but she was glad there was a lot to do. It would help to keep her from thinking.
Searching in the Shadows - Ch. 2
I adore Alma as an abuela, but I have to admit that I have such a soft spot for her as a mama to her babies. You just know, thanks to how the three of them turned out, that she was the best and she really rubbed off on them.
Another idea for a little one-shot?
Yes. Another one,
This is part of a three part fathers day series for Agustín and his girls💙
Happy birthday Agustín!
They find out that Mirabel needs glasses when she's about 2 or 3 years old. Mirabel is in the town square playing with Camilo when suddenly, a donkey cart comes flying at them. Agustín and Félix are at a juice stall right in view of them.
It seems that a wheel has come off the cart. The driver no longer has control of the cart, causing the donkeys to speed up. Camilo quickly runs out of the way, but Mirabel doesn't. He yells at her to get out of the way, but she doesn't understand why, because she can't see the cart. She can't see him either; he's too far away. The cart is careening closer and closer to Mirabel and it looks like it's going to hit her, when Agustín comes flying in out of nowhere and tackles her out of the way. They tumble to a stop. Mirabel has some nasty scratches and some road burn and Agustín's collarbone is broken, but it's nothing an arepa can't fix.💙
Mirabel is more upset that she "hurt papi🥺" than the fact that she almost got killed by a donkey cart and nearly gave her father a heart attack. She's also upset when Agustín tells her she needs glasses, but immediately perks up when Agustín tells her that she'll look just like Papá and no one else will, not even Isa or Lu.
💙I'll elaborate further soon💙
New Story: Buried!
Summary: "Bruno would never forgive himself, he'd only started taking care of Valentina and the other rats about a month ago!"
What's that? Two stories in one day? And it's another story for @encantobigbang 2022? Yep, I was the backup writer for my art partner @orchidlatte. Thank you for your lovely artwork!
Short excerpt: "Diego!" he called out softly. "Valentina! Chico!" It took a moment, but then a smile spread across his face when a furry snout poked out from behind the room divider, sniffing for the treat he was offering.
But the smile turned into a frown when it was only Diego and Chico who came for their breakfast. Valentina was missing. He checked behind the divider where the other two had been, between the logs near the stove, under the dresser, in the flower display in the kitchen entrance…
"Bruno, seriously…"
"Just a moment!" Bruno called back in a frenzy, wringing his hands in worry. "I can't find Valentina!"
The Empty Part of Me
Pirate AU Drabble: After her ceremony, Mirabel was left behind. But she always knew in her heart where she wanted to be. (Angst, backstory, pre-Antonio's gift ceremony)
Warning: child endangerment (happy ending)
--
She hated watching them leave.
For as many years as Mirabel could remember, her dreams had been of open seas, filled sails and new horizons, standing proud aboard the deck of The Casita with the wind in her hair.
For the last ten, the ship plagued her nightmares too.
It was always the same: Her standing onshore, held, unable to follow as she watched The Casita, her family, leaving without her. The stern of the ship, tall, unyielding, and wrong as it carried her home away.
She'd cried out that day, long after the last ship's sails disappeared over the horizon, disappearing just as the magic had: fading from her hands, the glow of the flag, faltering far above her. She'd never wept so much. She hadn't got a gift, but she had lost so much more.
Her abuela had been kind, gathering her in her arms. "It's okay," she'd said. "You can stay here with me. And they'll still come visit. You know they need to return to dock every once in a while."
In time, she'd come to look forward to those visits, delighting in seeing her parents and sisters again, pressing them for tales of their exploits out on the ocean. But they were brief, and all too soon they would head back out to sea, leaving her behind.
She tried to learn what she could, stuck ashore. When they next returned, she puffed out her chest and showed them her ropework: showed them how she could navigate by the stars and the sun; know how to raise a sail, and tack against the wind. She even showed them how to fish a line, long set, over the best side of the ship.
She wept again when they still left without her.
"You don't have a gift Mirabel, it's not safe."
She worked harder. She learned to use a sword, and help with the cannons. And it still wasn't enough.
She didn't visit the next time they were in, instead hiding in the thick jungled slopes that surrounded their home, letting their calls of her name bounce into nothing. She only emerged, tired and cold, when she was sure they were long gone.
It still hurt.
"…the Dorminique clan have restarted their feud with the north collective, threatening to cut off the traditional overland routes from the west and pushing them south. More ships are trying to come through to take advantage of the chaos, and neither Zaos or Marshall are willing to talk to try to resolve it. We're busier than ever, running around trying to keep things in order, but it couldn't have happened at a worse time, what with the baby coming."
"Baby?" Mirabel looked up at her Pa, confused. "What baby?"
There was a brief pause. "Oh, don't you remember?" Agustín said. "Your tía's pregnant." Mirabel's confusion was clearly visible. "She announced it at the party several months ago."
Mirabel didn't need to ask what party. She knew such impromptu gatherings were common onboard the ship. "I- I didn't know."
Silence fell, awkward around her as they realised their slip-up, no-one quite sure what to say. It became stifling, and she stood, excusing herself away.
"Mirabel, wait!"
Her ma caught up with her on the docks. "Mirabel, I'm sorry. I thought you had got a message, that someone had told you. I-"
"I'm going to be an older cousin." Mirabel swallowed, and just about managed a weak smile. "Isn't that great?" Another Madrigal.
"Mirabel,"
So much had changed in the past few years. Her sisters were becoming women- Luisa had become so much taller and stronger, stretching up beyond even their pa and becoming bound with muscle. Her sister had grown too; taller and much more self-sure. She barely stopped by to see her anymore, always tagging along in the shadow of her aunt. It was like she was a completely different person. Everyone was changing without her; Dolores merely sending her a smile across the way. The flicker of confusion on Camilo's face when she brought up a joke from when they were once inseparable. An old joke, beyond its time. But it was all she had to anchor herself to them, and she felt like she was drifting away.
She thought of her cousin, the new bundle of life due to come into the world without her.
"Is he even going to know who I am?"
They had, as promised, returned to shore soon after the birth, telling tales of the storm that had accompanied it with good charm. Mirabel got to see her cousin, a little boy, Antonio, even being allowed to hold him for a little while, under abuela's gaze. For a moment she thought he might stay with them too- he didn't have a gift after all.
Yet the little bundle returned to his mother's ship, and the next day, The Casita left port once again.
They found Mirabel when she emerged from the hold two days later, striding up on deck, determined to get her chance to say her piece and stay aboard. Pepa was furious, her anger terrifying to behold as she ordered her confined to quarters, trapped away until they could send her back home.
The ship came under attack soon after. New smugglers, determined to clear for themselves the lucrative new routes to the south. No quarter. Cannon and thunder rolled into one as they fought, The Casita taking heavy fire until the shots tore through the cabins where she had laid her child.
"ANTONIO!"
Not many would dare to speak of the storm after, only to say that it had torn the ship to shreds in a matter of minutes. Some said there had been a whirlpool, others, a waterspout, but all agreed that there had been no survivors.
Pepa barely noticed as she raced to the remains of her cabin, breaking through the door to the wreckage inside. No less than four holes now adorned the back wall, the floor covered in torn planks and loose paper that swirled at her presence.
She didn't care for that, swinging round and letting out a keening cry as she saw the crate that had been his crib- shattered; blankets strewn in parts across the floor.
...and empty.
She scrabbled around the wreckage. "Toñito, Toñito!"
"Here."
The voice came quiet, from behind her, accompanied by the sound of falling wood. She quickly pulled the rest aside, revealing the dark curly hair of her youngest sobrina, tucked into a tiny gap behind a pile of furniture. Mirabel looked up, blinking owlishly behind her glasses, absolutely covered in cuts and splinters. She wriggled a bit to give herself more space, then uncurled some more, revealing Antonio nestled, unharmed, in her arms. There wasn't a scratch on him. He squirmed, letting out a little coo, his hand reaching out as the cool air snuck in.
Officially, she was just a glorified babysitter, but Mirabel didn't care, so long as it meant she could stay on The Casita. And it was nice, looking after her little primo, the baby turning into a bright young child, full of delight and awe of the world around him. The two had grown close, Antonio absolutely adoring his cousin who would go out of her way to find him pictures of the strange animals and sea-life he was fascinated by. They became inseparable.
Mirabel dozed in her hammock, his warm weight draped across her chest as he still slept. He was nearly five now, and had his own berth- a space in his parent's cabin, but he still liked to slip down to the crew quarters, sleeping in the warmth of her company instead.
Footsteps came down the deck, pausing before the swinging lights, right beside them.
"Toñito," Pepa breathed, soft love and adoration pouring behind the name. As captain, Pepa had many responsibilities to take care of, and they didn't always let her take time to see her child. She would often stop by to whisper good night to her son.
"Mama!" Antonio murmured softly. Mirabel kept her eyes closed, pretending to still sleep as Pepa reached in, quietly chatting away to her son and pulling him into her arms.
Mirabel wanted to protest as the weight lifted, but kept quiet, listening to the precious adorations of his mother as her footsteps faded. It fell quiet again, and Mirabel let out a breath, arms folding over the space where her cousin had been.
Antonio was nearly five now, and growing quickly. Soon he would get a gift, joining the other Madrigals as part of the ship and crew, starting his training proper. She knew it was coming, as sure as time itself: There would be a day when he became too big to join her in her hammock, too old to run to her when the thunder rolled too loud. There would be a day when he decided with all his knowledge that he was finally able to look after himself.
And he wouldn't need her anymore.
@strcngered asked: ❛  i bet he's having a mid-life crisis!  ❜ from Camilo to Dolores
🐝  *  ―  𝑴𝒀 𝑰𝑴𝑴𝑶𝑹𝑻𝑨𝑳 𝑺𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑬𝑵𝑪𝑬 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑬𝑹𝑺. | Always Accepting
Dolores rolled her eyes at her little brother's words.
"Camilo, everyone gets like this when something...," she lowered her voice to an almost inaudible whisper. "Tío Bruno said before comes true." She ended her comment with a little squeak.
I can tell the main issue with the, so far, tiny blue eye samurai fandom is lgbt headcannons
this is a lot like what happened with Encanto, a movie telling a story about a culture, with specific cultural themes that a lot of people who were (mostly) not Hispanic thought were queer subtext
blue eye samurai is much the same. that’s not to say pre modern Japan wasn’t queer as hell but I promise you that Mizu isn’t your “canonically transmasc protagonist” she’s a woman living in a culture that rapes, kills, and abuses women
the subtext is cultural not queer, sorry
When Mirabel is a little girl, she finds a perfect way to deal with her mamá’s tiredness, and she makes it her mission to always make sure Julieta gets her rest.
It’s... fluff. The fluffies fluff I’ve written in a while. I hope you enjoy!
Encanto Oc Appreciation week two! Relationships ✨️
@encanto-extended-edition
It's my beloved sunshine trio! I finally drew all of them together (took me long enough I know)
Some more of Armida's relationships summarized below the cut 💛
(I am so terribly bad at summaries Im so sorry- If I could write out the extent of all of their relationships I would- sadly I dont have the time..)
Alma: Her relationship with Alma pre movie is strained- mostly because she fears the older woman. Armida is riddled with anxiety and intrusive thoughts over what her mother in law may think of her, and often fears Alma thinks she got into the way of her daughter's relationship- or that she isn't a "real" madrigal. Basically.. it's a lot of assumptions on how Alma feels about her.. but they are not always truthful.
Armida also tends to disagree with Alma's ways. But between her being passive by nature and having a fear of speaking up, she never says anything. Rather she does her best to help by being there for other family members the best she can be.
Julieta: She was the first of the triplets that Armida became close to. Armida had visited her stand often, and at first Julieta thought the younger woman was accident prone like Agustín.. Over time it became clear that wasn't the case, but Armida was always super polite- despite lying about why she needed to be healed. She always made sure to thank Julieta - not just for healing her but for everything she does. After that it was surprisingly easy for the two of them to talk- and making friends with Julieta naturally got Armida talking to Bruno and Pepa. Although out of the triplets Armida is the least closest to Julieta now, she still feels incredibly safe with the woman. Armida is set trying to lessen Julietas work load. The only issue being- she really can't cook- all she can really do is help with preparation when needed. So instead she settles with going out to town when Julieta needs anything. It's not a lot, but it's something at the very least, and it's appreciated more than Armida will probably ever realize.
Bruno: While obviously Armida is closest with Pepa and Félix, she also shares a really close bond with Bruno. The both of them being pretty bad insomniacs, they bonded a lot over sleepless nights- She'd tell him about the stars if the sky was clear enough and he'd talk about his rat telenovelas or sometimes about his gift- and she'd comfort him. She's a fan of his telenovelas- she loves the rats, and he's actually a really good writer. She offers to help make small costumes and even jokes about background music for suspense. All and all their relationship is very cute- I like to say they are like platonic soulmates. Obviously after Bruno disappears and comes back things aren't the same.. while he was in the walls some nights she'd sit and talk with his door instead, not knowing he was actually listening. Things are a bit awkward when he comes back- Armida having a lot of feelings about him "leaving" when he hurt his family so badly, but in the end she understands his motivation.
Isabela: When Isabela was little, the girl loved getting her hands dirty. so naturally - Armida loved taking the girl out with her in her nature walks, because even at twenty seven she herself still loved to explore. It was something they bonded over, Dolores never really being as interested. But of course fell apart after Isa was pressured into being the golden child. Now they aren't nearly as close, but the both of them still remember digging for worms near Casita, or going looking for different types of plants in the jungle. Sometimes Isa still takes walks- taking the same paths they used to when she was little- when she knows no one is looking for her. It helps clear her head. Of course after the movie the two begin to grow close once more, Isa being quite excited to show off all the new plants to her supportive tía.
Dolores: I think the majority of the fandom has agreed that Dolores is a daddy's girl- and I completely agree. However she of course loves each of her parents. Mida specifically doted a lot on her when she was younger- having been their first child. She'd often sing to her- writing her own little songs for her daughter. After Dolores got her gift it was a nice thing for the young girl to focus on- her mother singing. Unfortunately getting her gift, like with many of the madrigals, forced Dolores to grow up too soon. She's often a bit protective over her mother, due to things she's heard over time. Armida mostly dislikes the fact that Dolores feels the need to protect her- as she should be the one protecting her.
Little bonus- Armida despises Mariano at first. She disliked him when he was with Isa, not because she knew Isa didn't actually want to marry him (though she has suspected maybe something was up, if she had known that straight up I don't imagine she'd be able to keep quiet about it.) She's- in general- overprotective when it comes to any of the kids dating. She does, however, come around to him.
Luisa: With Luisa there isn't too much to say. Like Pepa and Félix, Armida treats each of Julieta's girls like her own kids,and Luisa is no exception. She used to read or sing to her each night as a kid, as she did with all of them. Each grandkid grew up with at least one song or story before bed, and sometimes even as adults or teenagers they still request it. But as with most of the kids, as Luisa grew up she stopped having time for things like that. Still Armida is always ready to sing or read to her once again- no matter how old she is.
Camilo: Camilo and Armida have very similar senses of humor at times, which means they make for quite the pair. The two of them sometimes pull little pranks around the house, nothing too much of course- after all she's still his mother and won't let him get away with everything, but he still gets away with more with her then he does with Félix or Pepa. Though being fifteen he doesn't spend as much time with his mom as he did at one point in his life- he still won't deny he loves her very much.
Mirabel: Pre movie, Armida would try her best to make Mirabel feel just as special as the rest of the family, but being busy and slightly stressed she could only do so much for the girl. Still, she did what she could when she could. She started to teach Mirabel embroidery after her failed gift ceremony to try to distract the little girl and make her feel better, she didn't expect her to pick up on it- but she's very proud of how far she's come. She's quite proud of the young woman in general.
Antonio: the baby of the family, he is absolutely Armida’s weakness. She has the hardest time saying no to him, much like others in the family. The fact that he looks so much like Félix really does not help- luckily Pepa and Félix are a bit better with saying no to him. She worried a lot about him, and his gift. Part of her had hoped that maybe he wouldn't get a gift, since she's seen how sometimes the gifts the family have can really feel more like curses, and he's only five- but luckily he gets a gift he really enjoys, one that she herself had wished for a lot as a child, one that doesn't seem like it will put immense amount of pressure on her baby boy. She enjoys learning what some of his animal friends are thinking, and reading them all to bed. (Sometimes she spoils some of his animals.. she can't help it)
omg i absolutely loved your dad!spence fic.... MY POOR HEART... thank you sm for ur service 💓💓
aww thank you so much! i'm happy you enjoyed it! the fact that he wasn't a dad in canon is truly criminal.... he's such a snacks always stocked in his satchel, unlimited books read before bedtime, cutting sandwiches into cute shapes, buying mismatched socks for his girls, goes to every single play/dance/sports game happily (except their doctors appointments, those make him sad bc he can't stand to see his babies hurting from the shots), frames all of their certificates (even pre k participation ones) on his office wall, learns (painstakingly) all types of hair braiding, proudly wears a tiara and boa for dress up, answers every question they have and always explains gently, goes no where without a first aid kit, recites the dialogue of their favorite movies because they're amazed by it, voluntarily listens (and sings) to the encanto soundtrack with them even if it's the 2339490 time, calls multiple times a day when he's away on a case, always brings back cute souvenirs from his cases, can never say no to them when they crawl into bed to sleep with the two of you, and only drinks coffee out of his #1 dad mug he got for father's day type of dad
Sneak peek, out of context👀
"You can't do that! She's my bebé!"
"She woke up for me!"
"Yeah, because you disturbed her! She was sleeping!"
"You-you take that back!"
"She heard your shrill voice and wanted you to stop talking!"
"Well, maybe she finally had enough of your moaning!"
"Why, you-"
"Ay, papí! You make me feel so good! Oh sí, oh sí, oh sí! Right there, right there, right fucking there! Por favor, más dur-"
Pepa froze mid sentence. There stood her mama, holding a tiny sleeping Mirabel, Dolores peeking around her skirt with wide eyes. Alma fixed them both with a stern look.
"Pepa, do we really need a reenactment of last night? I think we've all heard enough at this point. I for one would not like to relive that."
Julieta blushed scarlet and buried her hands in her face.
Last TV series: Last TV series I finished was Big Mood (with its Tim Downie jumpscare) but last TV show I watched was Fantasy High Junior Year
Last thing I ate: A chocolate crispy cake with mini eggs for Easter lol.
Sweet, Savory or Spicy: Sweet :')
Amount of sleep: standard anxiety haver of 'attempt for 8 hrs, typically lie awake staring at the ceiling for 1.5hrs standard while the brain plays either the top 5 concerns in your life or the Distraction Movie on repeat' (6-7hrs last night lol)
Currently reading: Oh damn I didn't realise this was the question coming up. A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske and then after that either a birthday gift book or The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo depending on when my pre-order arrives.
