how does the rest of the cast treat harpy yuu? does harpy yuu gossip with the flamingoes of heartslabyul and the peacocks of pomefiore, does she attempt to unionize all of the birds in NRC to overthrow crowley?

To be frank, Harpy!Yuu is a bird of prey which makes anything smaller than them fair game. As in food.

Thankfully they won't eat flamingos due to their bright coloring or peacocks because they have too many feathers for their taste. They do like hanging out with crows though but can't communicate (this depends on Yuu's breed.) They can call the crows to attack Crowley on command.

There are several versions of Harpy!Yuu, one of which is the hen harpy. Think of them as a big fluffy chicken. Another is the raptor which is a predator like a falcon. There is a third known as lovebird harpy but I'm not getting into that one today.

The students react differently depending on the species of Yuu.

Heartslabyul

Raptor:

The Heartslabyul boys are rightfully afraid of Raptor Harpy!Yuu. Riddle especially doesn't like them due to them attempting to eat a hedgehog when they first met. The only reason they still come to Heartslabyul is that Ace and Deuce are entertaining to watch.

Hen

Hen Harpy!Yuu is better for them. They enjoy the garden and will bask in the sun during tea time. They are a bit of a mother hen to the boys and constantly try to keep them out of trouble. Riddle isn't a fan of having a wing shoved in his face when the Harpy decides it's nap time

Savanaclaw

Raptor:

They fit right in. Harpies are rare but there are one or two living in the dorm. Unfortunately, they aren't compatible species. Like owls and crows, they don't get along. That's why they spend time with Jack and Ruggie more than other harpies. It's about mutualism.

Jack was afraid of the harpy at first but they became good friends who enjoy racing together. Ruggie uses them for pranks and stealing food like a seagull. Leona will chase off the nosy bird whenever he's eating and when Yuu's eating he'll chase them off to eat their food. They are like a lion and a vulture. When he has to babysit Cheka he will sneak the cub under Yuu to convince them to watch him. I works but Leona has to fight to get his nephew back every time.

Hen:

A big cuddly bird like them has a lot a trouble from Ruggie who will startle them when their nesting just to get an egg. Ruggie is like a fox in a chicken coop. Every encounter ends up with him covered in feathers and scratches.

Jack is protective of the hen due to Ruggie constantly bullying the poor chicken. He worries a lot about them losing feathers and an instance of them breaking a blood feather led to panic then he had to pull it for them.

Leona likes using the hen's wings as down feather pillows. Their warm and soft which is enough for him. Whenever they try to escape Leona threatens to turn them into a real pillow by plucking their wings bald.

Octavinelle

Raptor:

Yuu loves flying over the waves but the lounge doesn't suit them. They like fish and enjoy catching food.

Azul makes use of the harpy as he can. They are good at fishing using a net, not that fish is in short supply. He had hoped the harpy could at least sing but they aren't a songbird and don't sing for free.

Jade enjoys studying the harpy. His favorite so far is seeing the harpy eat. They don't need to cook their food and he watched as they gutted a fish and swallowed it whole. It was horrifying. Jade was amazed and has since showed everyone. Yuu however had to stop due to it not being good to eat fish bones constantly.

Floyd enjoys using his raptor friend for when he gets into a fight. He once got bored and picked a fight but when he got punched the bird tackled them mid-flight.

Hen:

They are not a big fan of swimming outside of floating on the water. The lounge is at least safe, mostly.

Azul is not allowed near their wings without permission. He always wants to takes their best feathers for quills. Yuu let's him take a limited number due to their high quality.

Jade is an egg thief who tries to get his hands on one to cook. Yuu is willing to peck his glowing eye out if he doesn't just ask for an egg. But where is the fun in that?

Floyd loves a game of chicken chasing. Spook the hen into a frenzy and turn then into a tornado of flying feathers.

They don't always get along but the hen still stays around. It's not all bad. The food is good and when the boys aren't agitating it's nice.

Scarabia

Raptor:

Polly doesn't want a cracker, Polly wants fresh meat. The dorm too hot for them but the water helps keep them cool so they stick with Kalim

Kalim loves his birdy friend. The harpy is very patient with him and lets him do as he pleases. The raptor learned to tolerate the constant touching. Kalim will at least race with Yuu on his flying carpet so they don't get bored.

Jamil has boundaries at least. He takes advantage of the talents of the harpy to find lost objects. He pays in food so the harpy is always willing to help.

Hen:

Polly wants crackers, lots and lots of crackers!

Hen Yuu loves Kalim and doesn't mind the affection. Will willingly let him dye their feathers. Kalim at least asks for feathers so he can turn them into earrings and necklaces.

Jamil likes that Yuu likes to clean since they are more domestic than feral like their Raptor counterpart. Yuu also helps cook.

During the winter Hen wraps her wings around the boys to keep them warm with their fluffy feathers.

Pomefiore

Raptor:

Yuu only comes to steal nesting material from the peacocks and fabric scraps. At least initially.

Vil isn't a fan of the foul fowl that causes trouble. The bird enjoys ripping up his curtains to decorate their nest. He had to relent eventually when he made a deal for help with the nest if they stop. This ended with Vil being covered in dirt and twigs. He refuses to help again.

Rook started to hunt the Harpy like game fowl until Yuu took notice. They managed to strike a deal where they help each other hunt. Like a falcon and their handler Yuu tips Rook off to the locations of his prey. In exchange Yuu gets snacks.

Epel uses the harpy as an escape. When Vil is looking for him he grabs the bird by the talons and they fly off. They are partners in crime now and steal material together.

Hen:

Is a thief as well but doesn't steal. They collect discarded fabric and fallen feathers.

Vil took interest in the pretty bird and chose to help them. He found clothes that would suit the harpy since pants aren't easy to put on when you have bird talons. The harpy stuck to Greco-Roman-style robes but they were too plain for Vil. He found small gold chains and beads to decorate their wings.

Rook is sensible not to startle the hen. He likes watching and studying them through. He is kind enough to tend to their wings. Removing broken feathers(to collect), preening, and cleaning. In response, the hen likes to try to preen their human.

Epel is used to chickens but this is one big chicken. That being said he knows what those feathered furys do. He is wise to not cause trouble around them. He would never fight in front of Yuu.

Ignihyde

Raptor:

The harpy feels at home here. Perfect nesting spots and the language is familiar. People are very afraid of them as well.

Idia is scared of harpies. They are known in stories for earing people and everyone knows that. Sure he's never met a human-eating harpy and Yuu probably doesn't want to eat blue fire but he's sure he'll be eaten.

Ortho is curious about the harpy but the harpy doesn't notice him. They don't interact.

Hen:

The hen finds the technology of the dorm disarming. They don't care for sparks, fire or metal. Is to dark here. So they flew the coop.

Idia is less afraid but still won't be caught near the bird and Ortho does the same.

Diasomnia

Raptor:

The perfect place to rest. The gargoyles seem to agree. Feels right at home among the crows.

Lilia hadn't met another harpy in a while and enjoys talking to Yuu. They fly together after dark.

Sebek is constantly about to get a talon to the face. The harpy doesn't like his attitude and will attack.

Silver and Yuu don't talk often but Yuu will rest in a tree while Silver sleeps under the shade.

Malleus is Yuu's ally. Birds and lizards stick together. They actually share an interest in gargoyles unexpectedly due to Yuu nesting and high places so often.

Hen:

Yuu doesn't fit but still enjoys the dorm.

Lilia loves to tease the hen and gets hit with a wing flap when they get mad. Yuu does come by to cook sometimes with him.

Sebek doesn't know that chickens have a pecking order. When he speaks out of turn or yells he gets a wing smack or the hen will pin him down until he submits.

Silver is so calming that Yuu will sleep next to him while basking in the sun.

Malleus has good vibes. Yuu trusts him to tend to their feathers. When Yuu's mother visited to have them watch her egg Yuu trusted Malleus to help tend to a nest. Egg sitting doesn't come naturally to him since he would rather light a fire under it and bury it in the ground like a dragon.

OCTOBER READS 📚

Another productive reading month for me! Manhua/Manhwa binge again and for those who are interested in what titles I tried, then this is the post for you. I don’t know what the next months will bring but I wanna get back to reading novels… we will see how that goes. for now, I just feel thankful that these works are out in the world for people to enjoy ^^

• The Tyrant Prince’s Last Promise ( Chapter 74 ; Ongoing )

Adapted from the novel, “the wife is first” so I see why there are alot of people following the manhua. Jing Shao ( MC ) is a prince who is good at battles and was made to marry a male concubine Han ( ML ). He didn’t treat him well for years but Han stayed by his side even if he was sentenced to death and was accused of so many things. Right before they died, he promised to treat Han better.

So his wish gets granted and he goes back to their wedding night. Then the whole story focuses on their relationship and how Jing Shao pays his dues and tries to be the best husband for Han. He also tries to make different decisions to prevent him from falling from grace like before. This story is just so fluffy and sweet <3 and i love their chibi versions! ☺️☺️☺️ I might read the novel to see where it goes but i have to say it’s a standard trope — and i will never get tired of it.

Guilty Affection ( Chapter 47 ; Ongoing )

Esper/Guide trope but this one is more problematic. LOL. The MC, Han Yoonjae is an undocumented Esper and living his life as a normal person. There is some mystery from his past because you can tell that he is strong but decided to leave his life as an Esper. Then here comes the ML, Cha Minhyung. A popular & strong guide who comes to his life and offers to be his guide and make his life better. These two have a shared past and the story tries to uncover that. Also what will happen to Yoonjae and his power. I really like his power, and I understand why he will be someone that everyone will want to control. The relationship between them is not really the “romance” type but more co-dependence and lots of smut.

Crushing Jade & Catching Pearls Chapter 51 ; Ongoing

This one is very unique, I have never read something with this plot. It is modern era, but the MC/ML both work as apprentices for an old art of sculpting. Tho the ML ( Ding Hanbai ) is much older and is more accomplished in the field. It’s really more of the relationship between the MC & ML and less “romance” so far. I feel like some people will find it boring, but there is something about it that draws me to it. and it doesn’t hurt that the art is pretty. Ding Hanbai starts off as an asshole who bullies the MC Ji Zhenzhu — but then they slowly become closer. The MC who is the goodest boy with puppy energy melts Ding Hanbai’s heart 💕

No arguing with Mr.Mo Chapter 71 ; Ongoing

The trope of Mr. Cold hearted CEO who is actually a simp for the MC is not new and I usually like it — I often root for the MC and hope they get together. But in this one, I find myself liking the ML ( Mr.Mo ) waaaay more than the MC. To the point that I don’t think the MC deserves Mr.Mo at all. I get that Xiao Nuo have some trauma and baggage of his own but his drama over nothing just irritates me. Mr.Mo is straightforward and clear with his intentions, but MC takes advantage of him, willingly or not, is not my cup of tea.

I won’t be continuing on, or if i do, maybe it’s to see Mr. Mo’s panels.

Hard Boiled Love Chapter 93 ; Ongoing

I only finished up until Chapter 40 cause I felt like there is nothing else for me as a reader to see, plot-wise. I could be wrong but maybe I will pick it up again when i’m in the mood. This is popular, and i understand why, the trope is catchy : Rich kid and his Bodyguard, then add BDSM into the mix. Boom! There is just no way that people will not click and read. It is a good read and enjoyable but I wasn’t in the headspace for that type of smut, the interaction of the MC/ML tho are sweet!!!! 💕

What captured me tho is the ML. Hwayoung Yoon. He is a lovable psychopath. He gave off so much Hisoka vibes ( from the anime hunterxhunter if you didn’t know ) and this type of character would do so well if done in live action. How he seems to be this sweet boy that his family dotes on but is secretly a sadistic bastard. I mean, look at him as a kid:

A master manipulator.

The MC too, Gyuwon, is well written. He is an ex mercenary who really wants to be someone’s sub ( in a sense ) but he doesn’t think that will happen because of how he looks. People have expectations of how he should be but lo and behold, he meets the fucked up Hwayoung. 😂😂😂 it’s more light and funny considering the subject — they could make the plot really dark, so i’m glad they didn’t.

Campus Trap Chapter 24; Ongoing

AHHHHHHHHHH! My new favorite. The omegaverse hoe in me is screaming! 🤍 too bad there are only a few chapters out. I honestly want to read the novel which is already completed but i’m still trying to figure out how to navigate korean sites. The plot of the story may seem dramatic to some, because it’s all about the MC (Chaewoo) who is an Omega and trying to make ends meet. He was once this kid who lived a pampered life but things changed and now he is a struggling student. One day, his Uncle, told him about the concept of a reset partner, which is kinda like a surrogate. So a dominant omega like him will be a surrogate to a rich dominant Alpha. He agrees and finds out that the Alpha is someone he goes to school with — Mister popular, Euigeon. It doesn’t help he doesn’t like the guy and Chaewoo is even jealous of his “success” cause he feels like he will be the same way if unfortunate events didn’t happen to him.

I LOVE IT. I LOVE THEM. The campus setting and the two being music students is also a bonus, it’s only beginning to be explored and I wanna see more. They have great chemistry and the way I squealed during the car scene. 😱😱😱 it’s also the type of story where I can’t wait for the ML to fall for the MC. I’m reading about Euigeon being this arrogant bitch to Chaewoo and i’m like— can’t wait to see you fall head over heels and regret your actions. It’s nothing abusive, if anything, I feel like his actions are reasonable cause he doesn’t want to make their relationship complicated. It’s supposed to be a business transaction. I wanna know more about ML too cause i’m sure he has so many issues that caused him to be this way. I have spoiled myself a by reading comments on the novel but i will surely keep an eye out on this till it’s completion.

Miss you, Lucifer 15 chapters ; Completed

A short Manhwa that is full of uwu and love! ��🥹🥹

If you want something to lift your mood up then this is the best pick. Honestly! It had everything: romance, comedy, angst and some plot in there even if it’s only 15 chapters. The premise is an “idol” from a boy group that’s not popular x A-list actor pairing. I don’t wanna spoil too much cause it’s better to just dive into it, and like i said, it’s not that long.

Business as Unusual 15 Chapters ; Completed

Another short one that I enjoyed. 💕

Tho i’m not a believer of getting back together with your ex. Lol. That’s the story here. MC/ML were a thing back in college and because of a misunderstanding they “broke up”. Years later, they meet again as office mates and rekindle their romance. I’m happy for the characters because they had a second chance at love and are now at a better place to stay together.

Considering the length of this, there was one scene that really stuck with me. The two are walking on the street late at night and ML is chasing the MC, he wants to talk but the MC won’t listen so he shouts:

“HEY! MY FIRST LOVE KIM MINJUN!” 🗣️🗣️🗣️

It’s so funny considering why it was said, to get someone’s attention — but also so romantic. It is like a scene in a k-drama.

Tied To You 64 Chapters ; Completed

I feel so lucky that I found this title in it’s completion cause i would absolutely go nuts if I had to wait, to find out what’s gonna happen next. As soon as I started, I couldn’t stop and took me 5 hours to finish the whole thing. So worth it. This kind of Manhwa is the reason why I keep reading, hoping that I will find something like this. It’s really something special. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

the synopsis is as follows:

It’s only sleeping together while holding hands, nothing else. That’s what Shin Wooseo tells himself when a red ring that ties a person to their soulmate appears on his finger one day. Once two people get tied by the ring, they cannot fall asleep unless they’re physically together. However, his destined partner isn’t his long-term friend and secret crush, Kang Jiseok, but rather his older brother, Kang Jigeon! And so starts the tragedy of loving one brother but having to share beds with the other. Although, it might not entirely be a tragedy, as Kang Jigeon doesn’t seem so disappointed about being tied to his younger brother’s best friend…

I don’t usually go for love triangle tropes, but this one is not really that kind of love triangle. The strength of this Manhwa is the storytelling. Every panel & interactions served a purpose. As a reader, you are pulled in and can’t help but want to know more. I also appreciated that we can see the perspectives of 3 different people, but moreso on the MC/ML. I liked the concept of “love” that was portrayed too — it’s something that you have to work and fight for. It’s a conscious choice and not all sweet gestures.

Now i wanna spotlight the ML, KANG JIGEON 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 If I was to rank my fave MLs from all the stuff I read, he would easily be in the Top 10. He is manipulative but in the best way because all he does is for Wooseo to pay more attention to him. I have to say that he ultimately sets up the “scene” but most of the time the choice is still with Wooseo. His devotion is very real and his approach to fighting for his love is ( to me personally ) admirable! GO GET YOUR BOY! I’m not even mad at him.

I’ve been wanting to read a character like him, a chaotic good if you will, and that’s probably why this made such an impact on me. It was hilarious seeing the comments of readers in the early chapters being sus about Jigeon and thinking he is gonna be an asshole ML. In the middle, they were confused whether to love or hate him and the schemes. Towards the end, everyone was cheering for Jigeon and applauding him. Lol. I guess he was successful in making the readers fall in love too. ❤️

The King and Me Chapter 36; Ongoing

The story is very unique, atleast to me, cause I haven’t read anything set in Ancient Egypt + Time travel. There is also some heavy plot aside from the romance and every character here is just beautiful and badass!!!! The first few chapters broke my heart. I swear. It was effective in setting up the MC’s quest and why he is so stubborn when he goes back in time. What he is after is so important. 💪🏼

I adore the MC (Zhang Li)!!! He is so smart and determined to find out the truth about his “Rocky” and the tyrant king. His circumstances are not the best, but he tries to adapt and is not some love sick fool. Even if the main reason that he is there is because of love. This story is still in it’s early stages and I feel like it could easily go up to 150++ chapters because of the plot and well, the progression of MC/ML relationship. It’s also a slowburn so if that’s your thing, you would enjoy this.

Manhattan Romance Chapter 40; Ongoing

This reads like the kind of novel set in a specific city, in this case, NY, and two people meet each other and fall in love. Of course there are challenges and issues between the characters and their environment but the central story is their relationship. I think people who will read this would want to be the MC (Hyeon), in a way, all because of how much the ML (Luwan) dotes on him. Hyeon has his own issues and he is a precious bean that is too good for this world! I’m so happy that Luwan is the person who “caught” him and not some toxic shit. Let them live in their penthouse and be happy, Let Hyeon paint more masterpieces and the two of them to travel the world. ❤️

Ordinary life of a Universal Guide Chapter 61; Completed

Because i’m a sucker for esper/guide universe I had to pick it up. There is really nothing “special” with the plot, it’s the usual for the trope. My comments sounds like i hated it or something lol but the truth is — it’s alright. I picked this up after reading really good ones ( tied to you & the king and me ) so this was an in between read. I can’t always be that lucky.

The Third Ending Chapter 67; Completed

OMG how do I even begin to describe this perfection. I’ve been seeing this on other people’s list but for some reason I kept putting it off. Funny how I always manage to “start” reading something really good just before bedtime — which delays the “sleeping” I should be doing 😂😂😂

First of all, I love the art. It reminds me of Omega Complex that was so pretty so that helped a lot. 🫶🏼

Synopsis:

Suh Yoonseul has had life easy—everyone likes him, he’s good at his job, basically everything has always worked out as smooth as butter. However, there’s something that brings all of his good luck down, and it’s the infrequent dreams he has of Kang Joon. Who knew that rejecting a guy once would hang so heavy on your life? To make things worse, after he runs into Joon the dreams keep on coming daily. At his wit’s end, Yoonseul takes some advice from a friend so that he can free himself from this jinx. It’s simple. Make Kang Joon think that he’s a nice person. That can’t be hard, right?

Yoonseul is one of my favorite MCs. He’s a chronic people pleaser and has this perfect facade that he presents to everyone. So when he remembers being mean ( showing his true self ) back in high school to someone who confessed to him — he can’t let it go. It was so fun to see him suffer when it comes to winning Joonie over ( AHHHHHH Joonie is the most precious and can do no wrong!!! ) because tbh his intentions weren’t good. He is selfish. The entire season 1 was such a treat. Seeing their relationship progress and I— I don’t wanna spoil anymore but this could easily be a kdrama. There was that scene in the snow. AHHHHH! I was screaming while reading it! Lol. Season 2 is sweeter and more on fluff, by that time, you’re already so invested on them that you don’t care about any plot. Personally, what I loved about this is their mutual obsession towards each other. I’m a fan of that. I like tropes that are about “fated pairs” or something similar.

Between the Lines Chapter 20 ; ongoing

Not gonna say too much about this and I encourage people to wait for more chapters but it has a solid start. The MC/ML are both likable. Especially the MC. The premise is also hilarious, cause MC is a bl writer who is having a writer’s block and needs an inspiration for his protagonist. Here comes ML, who acts like Mr.Perfect ( but he isn’t ) and inspires him. There is so much more going on here that I feel like will be explored more as the story progresses so i’ll definitely come back to it.

Necromancer Survival 79 chapters ; 2 seasons completed and s3 is TBA

I had no idea what was in store for me when I decided to pick this up. I have a thing for necromancers and this one has the whole “dungeons” concept to it so I was down. But like — this probably ruined every other story for me. In a good way. Now I want a plot-heavy type of story with the romance as a bonus only. All I’ve been reading so are heavy on the romance & relationship, this has that element too but you get really invested with the plot.

Synopsis:

When the weak and unconfident Choi Yikyung first found out that he was a user, he thought he had finally hit the jackpot. In Yikyung’s mind, Necromancy seemed like the ultimate mix of cool and interesting. Back then, he had no idea that the Necromancer class was the weakest of them all! But as Yikyung enters the newly reopened Tower of Spirits in search of enhancement materials, he is sucked into a mysterious area of the dungeon where he encounters a frightening corpse. “Ding!” A quest window pops up, and it says… “You have made a pact with Seo Dawon, a vengeful spirit.” When tackling quests, it doesn’t hurt to have a companion or two, especially if one of them is the spirit of an ultra powerful and handsome young man. After all, “it’s dangerous to go alone”!

Don’t let the art fool you. It’s not some bright and shiny story. I made the mistake of thinking it’s gonna be some g rated adventure story lol It’s literally a necromancer whose goal is to make a master/slave pact with all the members of a dead team. He has to fulfill their wishes and help them get their revenge— which means killing a lot of people. It comes with a price, because every summoning is making him weaker in some aspects. Also no one knows what the true power of a necromancer is so whatever it is he’s doing — they don’t know what will happen to him in the long run. I freakin love the concept and how it’s mixed in with the romance. Is Seo Dawon only attracted to Yikyung because he is his master or are these real feelings? How will this relationship even work when one of them is Dead? A huge bonus too are how likable the other characters are. Especially Jung Garam!!! 🫶🏼

I hope the Manhwa continues cause I wanna see them get that revenge! 💪🏼 I wanna know too if Yikyung’s power will allow him to resurrect people and if so, what’s the payment?

I see lots of comments that say this adaptation does not live up to the novel & source material. Which i get it — a Manhwa will have restrictions, especially on the themes. The novels seems more gruesome and explicit ( not the sexual kind ) which usually has to be toned down for a Manhwa to get a license. Plus from what I can tell, the Novel is like 500 chapters ++ with a concept so niche and is for a specific type of reader. So yeah… I’m not sure if I will pick up the novel. I don’t have that urge yet, tho I am very interested in the censored scenes and if it’s really as dark as people are saying it is. I have a feeling it’s right up my alley. && I read some comments that Yikyung gets more dangerous as the story progresses ( getting corrupted by the summoning and the practice of necromancy ). I’m very curious! 👀

Black Mirror Chapter 64 ; Completed

This is the perfect spooky + sexy read for the season we’re in right now. From the first page down to the end, I can’t stop reading and wanting to know what happens next. It perfectly captures that eerie feeling, even if there are a lot of explicit scenes, it’s still there. The author really planned this well and the artist perfectly executed it. I don’t explain more because it’s best to go into this blind and experience the story for yourself. Highly recommend ✨✨

What is it like being a prosecutor writing fanfic about a defense attorney?

I love this ask, because I love doing this!

There are so many things I love about being a prosecutor. I love that I can always do what I believe in. I love that I don't have to pretend or exaggerate the facts. I love that I have the ability to dismiss cases that were mishandled by police. I love that I can work with defense attorneys to try to come up with a resolution that's as fair as possible for everyone involved.

But I also recognize that I'm very, very blessed to work in an office where ethics are paramount. I've gone to my boss with numerous ethical questions, and every. single. time. he has: a) agreed with me, and b) promised to back me up. I know that very few prosecutors can say that. And there are prosecutors out there who would rather not be ethical anyway...because they have too narrow a view of "justice" or because they're more interested in playing politics, or for some other reason.

That's part of what's so great about writing Matt. I can step into that other reality and think about the consequences of corruption in prosecution. It shouldn't depend on defense attorneys to catch corruption...but it sometimes does. And what does that look like?

I don't know if this is true or not, but it feels like since starting to work in this office, I've started writing more and more fics that deal with corruption in a prosecutor's office. And I kinda wonder if that's me just being more keenly aware of the power prosecutors have, and how easy it is to use that power for evil.

(I think I used to think judges have more power. But...they really don't. They have some...they certainly have more than defense attorneys. But they are in no way the most effective way to stop corruption in prosecution.)

I also appreciate writing Matt because it just helps me stay a little more grounded in...well, in real life. Prosecutors can be in our own little bubble and a lot of prosecutors, even relatively ethical ones, get jaded very quickly. I don't think writing fanfiction is the main thing that helps me keep perspective (I'd credit that to my faith, and my church community, since a lot of my closest friends in my church volunteer with people who have committed crimes), but writing fic sure doesn't hurt. Especially because Matt is very much a character who believes people are, first and foremost, people - not criminals.

I also would like to think that being a prosecutor gives my stories an added sense of realism. There are a lot of great legal fics out there, including even fics that aren't written by lawyers. I think that's because there are a lot of great legal stories out there...but most of them are from the defense POV. The prosecutor is generally simply The Enemy, and there's not a lot of light shed on what their motivations are.

I like to think, as a prosecutor myself, I can write more nuanced stories. Even if I'm writing about corruption in the office, I can pick a character (like Jen or Kirsten) who is trying to do the right thing in that office. I like to think that just gives the stories a lot more depth. It certainly makes them more interesting to me!

The only sad thing is, I can write Matt caring deeply about his clients, and I just know that...I can't really do that. Unless a defendant is representing themselves, I can't even talk to them. And that really sucks, because I care about the person more than I care about the case. I can get more involved with victims, and that's incredibly rewarding, but sometimes writing Matt sitting down with a client and talking them through life and demonstrating care for them makes me just a little wistful.

uh omg i mean i don't typically dabble in angsty endings? i'm a happy/hopeful ending kinda gal. i did have santana die in this one fic but it ended hopefully, and then i also had maya and claudine not end up together, but it was also not bad?? idk if i've ever thought of an angsty ending that feels like a good pay off for having been put through the paces ig

the vast majority of my fics are happy endings so idk, pick any of them tbh LOL

not really, no. i've been most fortunate that people have been very nice in the comments.

god uh probably some super early hermione/ginny back in middle school and then All My Children bianca/maggie back in high school (when there were forums to join and pretend you're not a child) but those things are not posted

Not terribly uncommon honestly, there's the old law of the sea that absolves sailors of wrongdoing in case of cannibalism if starvation is the only other option and the person being eaten is chosen fairly.

Oh, thanks for this ask, friend! I love my little Twisted Wonderland Mafia AU! I'm more than happy to talk about it!

My favourite things about my Twisted Wonderland Mafia AU

-Few characters know that Yuu is from another world

This element was the one I worried about the most, since where Yuu comes from truly affected the fanfic's set up. I've thought about this AU for a few months before sitting down to write it, and I flip flopped between canon Yuu (isekai'd to the world) and completely not canon (Yuu is just from the world). Ultimately, I'm very happy I picked the first option and decided to keep it a big secret. I am a huge fan of characters not from the world and hiding it from everyone (see: my love of the Awakening Trio in Fates).

-The story has Yuu/Everyone instead of my usual platonic route

I truly love writing platonic relationships, especially in Twisted Wonderland with Yuu, but I cannot tell you how excited I am that the characters can overtly flirt with Yuu. I have so many non-platonic head canons floating in my brain! Can't wait to share a few with everyone!

-Poly/Open Relationships

As someone who is a multi-shipper I find OT3 or even open relationships fun to write, mostly because I don't have to narrow my focus to one specific ship the entire time. Of course, I have some ships I'm firmly for (RookVil is my OTP), having freedom is my most valued part of creatively writing. I like how this fic makes me feel as though I can play looser with many story elements that I wouldn't do if I was writing canonically.

-World building/Festivals

From the first moment I created this story, I wanted it to be University AU. This meant I was less beholden to canon and free to set the stage anywhere I wished. This has allowed me to flesh out the world differently and add in my own ideas/concepts. I'm having a lot of fun with the festivals, which are numerous because I was thinking about how many festivals happen in Japan. Especially over the summer months.

-They're all Mafia

Despite how I don't have enough violent scenes as I'd like, I guarantee our boys are off doing shady things in order to "protect" their territory. I'm also very weak to the idea of Yuu befriending the most Powerful People in this world accidentally. It can also lend to the sexiest scenes as everyone is confident and aware they're both attractive and powerful. Poor Yuu, they haven't seen anything yet.

-Opportunity for Dramatic Reveals

My favourite trope of all time is a well written Dramatic Reveal of identity, either to the audience or to the characters. It doesn't matter. All I want is set up so I can knock down that dramatic reveal like a set of dominoes. This fic has allowed me that opportunity and I'm going to use it a little bit. I won't do it all the time as it has to depend on the tone I want for the story, but know it will happen.

-Yuu meeting Jade and Floyd

Before I wrote this fic I wrote a different version of the scene where Jade and Floyd meet Yuu. However, since that idea was set in a more canon universe (everyone knows Yuu is from another world, Yuu already knows them, etc.) I couldn't use it for this fic. Also, I deleted the file LOL. Anyways, I loved the vibe of that scene enough to recreate it! It's one of my favourite scenes because I had the strongest visual image in my mind.

Also as a small add on, I am in love with the scene of Floyd biting Yuu.

-Yuu meeting and befriending Malleus

I love Malleus so much. I was excited to follow similar elements from canon (Yuu meets him as a mysterious stranger, they befriend him, they find out later who he really is). I was also excited to have other characters know Yuu is basically a dimension hopping alien. It gave me freedom to have another character besides the teachers be a source Yuu can blatantly ask questions.

An add on: I had multiple ideas for how Malleus reveals is identity to Yuu. Shame I couldn't use all of them, but I like where I landed.

-Other people actually like this!!!

Anytime I plan an AU that I know is a little off the wall, a little skewed too far off the side, I think "Okay, this is going to be for me and maybe like two other people". Of course, I always write for myself but it's very flattering and wonderful to see others enjoy my ideas too. Really, I am so appreciative of everyone who has told me they enjoy this story though their kudos, comments, and bookmarks.

Agent Ace

Sophia - Hyena

It took me awhile to think of a good match for her personality, but a hyena ended up being the perfect fit! Sophia is street-smart and highly adaptable to any situation. Her wits and courage are what make her such an accomplished agent, and she won't shy away from a challenge. At the same time, she has the capacity to be affectionate. While her job doesn't allow her many chances to connect with her family, she is protective to the point of being impulsive.

Harley - Fox

Foxes unfortunately tend to be associated with more negative connotations of deceit and trickery. However, I choose to view them as crafty and clever, which is exactly how I feel about Harley! She's incredibly smart, focused, and determined in every aspect of her life, with an innovative streak as an inventor. And like her sister, the hyena, which are in a completely different family from foxes but don't think about it too much, she's good at improvising on the fly, although she's more likely to avoid trouble if she can help it.

Janus - Panther

This was the first animal that popped into my head when I thought of Janus (and honestly, black cats in general). Graceful, elusive, powerful, and absolutely thriving in his environment, there have been times where I've even described his movements as cat-like on page. Adaptability seems to be a big theme when it comes to my characters; he faces problems head-on and depends almost exclusively on himself, considering himself a leader and a visionary.

Jade - Otter

Another easy one! Jade is the embodiment of everything an otter represents—outgoing, confident, fun-loving and utterly adorable. She's full of energy and highly motivated, sure that there isn't a puzzle she can't solve. That kind of wisdom and creativity are what make her so compatible with Harley, and their relationship is the mere image of otters holding hands in their sleep.

Max - Owl

This was the toughest one by far, but in the end, Max as an owl just makes sense. Logical and highly critical of himself, he never makes a move until he has all the facts, absorbing knowledge like a sponge. His plans are meticulous and well-thought-out, as long as he keeps a clear head. While he prefers to keep the peace, he has a hidden strength and potential as a badass fighter.

Anonymous Request: hello! heard you were doin' character matchups :D surprise me with the fandom, but if you don't feel comfortable with that, then please ignore this ask if i had to choose one word to describe myself, i would pick kindness. i care deeply about everyone, especially my friends and family, and i find it hard to hold grudges. i am quite shy and not much of a talker. i'm also a big animal lover :) cats and possums are my favorite little guys! you wouldn't know it by looking at me, but i love horror movies, rock music and goth fashion, and i have a occasionally dark sense of humor that only springs up around people i'm really close with

my favorite color is purple btw and i like pasta

After going through the information given, I believe that you are best paired with Jade Leech!

I won’t lie to you… but Jade will. Nine times out of ten, he will use your kindness to his advantage and make it seem like he has no idea that he is doing so. When he first meets you, he’s somewhat surprised by how likable and easygoing you are around others. As one of the merfolk from one of the most dangerous parts of the ocean, he can say for certain that kindness such as yours only breeds naivete and eventual death. It’s not recommended that you be so kind and open!

Eventually, however, as he gets to know you better and he realizes that no matter how many times he screws you over you will always act charitably towards him, his feelings towards you will change. He will no longer think of you as an easy mark, but as someone who is worthy of his interest and attention. He won’t call it friendship, but he will refrain from taking advantage of you too often on the off chance you actually do form a grudge against him.

Since Jade is an observant sort of person, he realizes right away that you’re shy. Oh, my. You know what that means? Jade is going to have a field day with you. Not only are you so kind and generous and everything he’s not, but you’re also helpless in social situations! What a find! Instead of taking advantage of you in favor of his interests, he will either gently tease you or put you in situations where you have no choice but to speak up for yourself. If you ever ask if he’s doing it on purpose, he’ll either feign surprise that you think so little of him or he’ll tell you the truth. Just flip a coin; you’ll lose either way.

Cats and possums are such interesting creatures, Jade thinks. And you like other animals as well? Well, Jade can’t quite say the same for himself, but he can see the appeal in small furry mammals. They are soft and have several notable features that would make them adorable in most humans’ eyes. That said, a question burns in the dark recesses of his mind and he has no choice but to confront you directly. Do you happen to like eels? What about moray eels? What about merfolk who just happen to be moray eels? Would you like to pet one? (Depending on how brave and/or masochistic you are, just say no. You get to have another coin flip toss on whether or not Jade will be placid about being pet in his eel form or if he’s going to bite you… and you’ll lose both ways because it’s Jade).

Your other interests and idiosyncrasies amuse Jade. You, a shy, kindhearted individual like yourself, love horror movies? Allow Jade to ask you a couple questions and gather more intel on the matter. Don’t look so shocked, dear, friends are allowed to ask about their friends’ interests, correct? Please ignore that suspicious grin on his face and the fact that his eyes are more predatory than usual. He’s an eel and eels can be mischievous.

If you find yourself in a dark room with nothing but the world’s most terrifying, spine tingling, bone chilling horror movie ever, just know that Jade is taking notes in the corner. (No, they’re not about you; he’s just interested in what human entertainment is like).

Jade will never admit it, but he likes how your interests skew towards things that he thought he would never associate with you. Again, it’s your initial surface personality that has him stumbling over other aspects of yourself that he may have overlooked. Then again, it takes one to know one. He has quite a few diverse hobbies that no one else would have guessed upon meeting him.

With the above said, Jade is floored when he realizes that you have a dark sense of humor. At first, he might think that he may have misheard or perhaps you’ve said something that may only be apparent for land dwellers, but nope! You really can be quite dark when you want to be, my dear. If you catch him at the right moment, you’ll find that his polite facade fades into a moment of shock and true mirth before he covers it up with a light cough. (Do it again. As much as Jade hates to admit it, he doesn’t think he’ll get used to your dark humor).

Oh my, purple is such a lovely color! And pasta is a great dish! You know what’s better than having one or the other? Having both, of course! For the cheap price of working two weeks in Mostro Lounge, you can enjoy wearing the custom Octavinelle dorm uniform while carrying trays of pasta to hungry customers! How does that sound? No, you’re not interested? How about a discount on that pasta? He can promise that you won’t owe him anything in return… for now…

May whatever higher power out there have mercy on your poor soul because Jade sure won’t. Honestly, it’s on you for getting Jade’s attention like this. However, even if you do get teased a lot and get subjected to many of Jade’s dark whims, what you’ll gain in return is a friend who will take down your enemies and torture your tormentors. That’s a fair and equal exchange, yes?

(Before you ask, yes, Jade absolutely does like you for you and thinks of you as great friends. He’s not going to admit that, though).

• What powers/fighting type would you have if you were in mk?: well if i go by my self insert oc lady tsung(shang's wife),she has his fighting skills since she was trained by him,only a bit of magic which is fire magic. She is very monitored and limited with soul magic (due to her husband being cautious af). But if its me straight up? Fire magic/fire chi.

I'd probably mildly panic. But then be happy because its a tropical paradise. Unf,yes. But I'd try to find out who lives here if any at all. (And me finding shang well....this is the hell i choose hun)

• Would you have a master/teacher/sensei? If so...who?: well my self insert oc lady tsung is technically his pupil. Soooo. Shang tsung. But also I'd pick him anyways,because who better to learn from then legit the guy that can turn into anybody?

• Fatalities,brutalities,or friendship?: depends on the situation. Game wise. I love brutalities more now than fatalities. Friendships are always welcome. Storywise or in a narrative? Maybe a fatality,cant go wrong with that. Friendships or mercy if the story counts for it.

• What stage would you NOT wanna be stuck in?: fuuuuuuck. Probably the pit only because,i do not like heights. But close second would be the deadpool/acid pit.

• Who would be absolutely terrifying to fight in mk. Even if it was at its fairest and you had the highest advantage.: raiden. Because why would you fight a god? Shang tsung not because he is only dangerous to fight but this fucker would know i like him,and take full advantage of that. He probably already has. The fight wouldn't get anywhere because he'd be too busy trying to get a rise outta me.

• Who's your least faves and why?: Stryker,because acab and i just dont like him all that much. Kronika because she's useless as a main badguy is underwhelming,and boring. (Look things could always be written better but how it was played out was hella sloppy and no excuse for them to not write better)

• Who's in your opinion the best character to play as? Who is the worst?: that depends entirely on you. For me personally the worst,i hate playing d'vorah and mileena in mk11 soley for the fact its hella unbalanced. But overall in mk across the board. Any character with gun(minus erron black because his character is based around rooty tooty mc shooty). As for the best character. Any of the two monks,johnny cage,raiden(if done right) and shang tsung if you wanna be an absolute jerk to your opponent. These characters are well rounded across many games for the most part and good to play even if you know nothing of mk. Or fighting games. Liu kang is easy and so is johnny cage. Good for beginners.

• Fave game?: shaolin monks and mk2.

• Least fave game?: honestly i dunno. I can't hate a mk game. Only critique its storytelling. But it's never been 100% anyways so despite any personal gripes. All mk games at the end of the day are fun. If you aint having fun. Then it sucks.

• Favorite iteration of your faves? The least fave?: ok look my fave shang tsung is always the 95 movie. 11 when he came back i was so stoked! (And the only reason why i got mk11 in the first place. I wouldn't touch it otherwise) but i have a soft spot for mk legends SR and BOTR old man shang tsung. Artt butler's performance grew on me. But no offense,unpopular opinion here. Snowblind sucked. Unless you are a kano simp or a kenshi fan. You wont like this movie. It feels so catered to one type of audience it aint funny. But BOTR and SR also has some problems too. But shang tsung is once again the only good thing about it. Maybe raiden. But thats about it. Sadly.

• Who would you love to have a drink with?: shang,not because i love the character. But because it would be fun and interesting conversations I'd have. Maybe raiden or fujin.

• Who would you play board games/videogames with?: raiden or kung lao or liu kang. They'd be fun. Videogames with johnny cage. Because he'd be a blast.

• Who would you have as a sparring partner?: if not shang? Liu kang. He'd be fair... ish.

• Who is your arch nemesis?: quan chi. More likely.

• Who if given the chance to. Would you love to sit down and have a deep conversation with?: shang tsung or raiden. If i can get away with it,shao kahn surprisingly. (Look my shao kahn is waaaaaaay more scary intelligent than is depicted in most media)

• Where would you like to live in the mk verse?: shang's island. Far tf away from people. Plus i love the ocean and beach sm.

• Would you help johnny cage with a movie if given the opportunity?: maybe. Depending on the script.

Second of all actually make the elder gods do their jobs,be more involved and relevant again. 3rd thing,write a better system of rules of mk and enforce the tournament,like actually make this not just plot convenient. Actually enforcing these rules.

• If you could have the power of the crown,would you take it? If so what would you do? If not,who would you give it to and why?: i wrote a whole thing for that with my self insert oc lady tsung.

• What is a race/species in mk you want to be explored or expanded upon?: the kytinn,the shokan,maybe reptiles species the saurians.

• What part of the lore is underrated or underused?: shiiiiit there is too many things they forgot and left to rot.

• Opinion on the special forces?: too much involvement in the story when they dont need to be. Not to be that guy but i really wish people would stop having this obsession with us military. It's disturbing to me. And special forces,was never ment to be a huge thing. It was so minuscule in the grand scheme of things for mk. Like it was to show " hey yeah, you aren't the big bad tough guys here. There is something bigger than you. So buckle up bitch because you about to get humbled" because i loved it when the characters had to rely on things that was beyond them. Like actual fighting skils and not relying on "gUn" to do the job. Maybe magic. Because let's be real. The us military would both piss their pants at an actual invasion of another world. Plus wanna get their greedy hands in whatever crap outworld has to offer. Dont lie. We'd be fucked if we didn't have a raiden or mk tournament to back us up. The only thing that should come out of SF is sonya n jax and they are again,minuscule in the grand scheme of it all. They got humbled real quick. As it should be. There is more I'd add. But id be here all day.

• Opinion on the elder gods?: should be utilized more and better. But overall cool.

• Opinion on the old timeline? New timeline?: honestly i just want a good story. New,old,dont matter.

• Opinion on the "kombat kids"?: could be better. Takeda and jin are the only ones i actually care about. Jacqui is cool but became a jax "clone" instead of her our autonomy as a character. And cassie,dont get me started on her. I'd be in a rage for days. But I'll leave it as she should have been johnnys kid from other marriage,instead of a careless one night stand that turned into loveless forced marriage for plot because the writers are brain dead and bigoted towards jax's family(because of course the only two main yt characters gotta have happy endings without much damage and actual consequences). But ya know. That's too spicy for people who don't understand why this shit pisses me off personally.

• Are you a heroic kharacter,villainous,neutral,etc?: myself? neutral for the most part.(as for my self insert oc Lady tsung will always be by her husband's side regardless if it's agreement with him or not. That woman is loyal. She is also neutral for the most part)

• If tempted by an enemy to join them if it ment saving your realm,home,loved ones,friends.....would you?: if its shang id be boned. Lol. Take that as you will. Gallen | Suunaq Industrial Complex | Present Night

A sprawling industrial complex covered the plain, its buildings and roads nearly equaling the size of a small town.

It had stood there longer than some of the actual settlements in the surrounding area, growing piece by piece over several millennia. Power plants and offices jostled for space, interspersed with streets that had been paved and patched more times than anyone could count. Everything was kept in a state of high repair; the finest quality droids maintained the infrastructure, though there were no imperial drones to be seen.

Ever since its earliest nights, the complex had been filled white butterflies that did not seem to feed from or pollinate any flowers; not that there were many to be found in such a place. Any attempts to catch and study them ended in the insects dissolving to nothing, so trolls let them be.

Most didn’t have the time or energy to wonder about what little wildlife surrounded them to begin with.

For marked over each of the complex’s entrances, on the identification cards of all the trolls who worked in that place, was the jade symbol of QPIN - each and every troll there in the corporation-gang’s debt.

Debts paid - in part - by blood.

Debts paid to one of the Queenpin’s right-hand executives, Inshii Suunaq.

Three tall figures gathered under the glare of a street lamp, all coming from different directions.

A woman, hourglass-shaped with a band covering her eyes and a cowgirl hat on her head, dressed in a crop top and shorts. A man, broad and powerfully built, wearing only knee-length shorts and no shirt. A person dressed in a beautiful violet sherwani, the tallest of all, wide with soft roundness instead of the man’s dense bulk.

The woman spoke first as they faced each other on the sidewalk, the night air quiet around them.

“Damn, I hate this place.” Rhyssa complained, hands on her hips. “I can’t even see it proper and I still hate it. Would it kill ya to decorate a bit, Shii? The vibes are just awful.”

“I don’t have time for excessive frivolity.” Responded the false violet in a deadpan as they led the other two away. “Trolls can put up ornamentation if they like; I don’t forbid them. Excessive levels of depression are unproductive.”

Rhyssa groaned as she followed, her boots’ spurs jingling softly. “Sugar, you’ve been contributin’ to depression in trolls for a long time without tryin’. I love you, but ya are kind of a robot when it comes to fixin’ a place up.”

Gallen hung back a few steps as the three of them made their way down the sidewalk, letting the other two banter. He was grateful he couldn’t speak, and that he likely wouldn’t be asked to sign very much, or type; if his siblings picked up on his dread, everything was over.

Everything might still be over if he couldn’t carry out the plan Klirro and Tuuya had concocted for him. All his isopods wriggled anxiously in his skin, though he tried not to let it show.

Rhyssa hung back, head tilted, the wasps fluttering around her to serve as her eyes buzzing in concern.

“What’s eatin’ ya, Gal?”

I don’t know how things are going to be from now on, he signed honestly.

I hope this makes mother better, but what if it makes her worse? What will we do? How can we care for her? For once, I wish we were more like trolls. Trolls know how to tend to their lusii and quadrants.

All we were ever meant to do was serve her.

We were never taught anything else. Unlike Lleios, we weren’t given the ability to learn much beyond what we were made to do.

I think she did that on purpose, he signed, suddenly angry as he had the thought, eyes narrowing, gestures sharper. I think she wanted to keep us dependent.

She let me learn about religion, she let me watch trolls come to my altar all those sweeps, but she knew I could never truly understand them.

Only Lleios could.

Gallen looked at Rhyssa, whose hand touched her mouth in shock at his words, and he saw that Inshii had stopped walking, looking back at the pair of them as their fins flicked.

The isopod swarm folded his broad arms, blue eyes hard. He wasn’t backing down.

Even if it weren’t for the mission, even if Klirro had never found him, even if he had wound up killing Tuuya after all - these doubts had brewed for centuries, and he was done ignoring his problems.

“Gal! What’s all this hullabaloo?” Rhyssa protested, her own hands flapping in distress as she buzzed with worry. “Where’d this come from all of a sudden, huh? You’ve never - never said a blessed thing - ”

“Now is not the time for such topics.” Cut in Inshii, hard enough that their sister’s hands dropped and her buzzing quieted. She folded her arms, sullenly silent, and Gallen stared the butterfly swarm down, their violet eyes hard.

“Gallen…we will discuss this later.” His oldest sibling’s tone held a practiced neutrality, one he knew was barely holding back anger. Their fins twitched almost imperceptibly, but he caught it.

“Mother needs us now, and she needs us united.”

As if they’d been properly united for sweeps. As if they’d really acted together since Lleios had died.

Killed by a troll, of all things. A troll they had loved. A troll who betrayed them…yet they had wanted him to, so they could die.

Gallen’s fists clenched at the way his youngest sibling had chosen to leave the rest of them behind. If they hadn’t done that, none of this would have happened.

The cold pavement cut his bare feet repeatedly, as it usually did. What did he care? He regenerated his skin nigh instantly, barely noticing as the three swarms drew closer to Inshii’s laboratory.

The thick glass doors slid open with a slight hiss as the false violet led the way in after flashing their ID to a scanner, barely making any sound despite their size. Gallen squinted as they walked into the harsh lighting and gray-white walls and floors, the smell of disinfectant prominent.

There were a few trolls to be seen, but most of Inshii’s staff here were highly specialized robots. The ones that were present shied away from the trio automatically. There wasn’t any fear on their faces or in their movements; they did it instinctively, knowing better than to be close.

“Can we at least eat before this?” Commented Rhyssa, slightly impatient. “I’m assumin’ those ain’t snacks, and I’m peckish.”

“Obviously those aren’t snacks.” Said Inshii in a slightly weary tone of voice. “Food doesn’t work in the laboratory. If you knew anything about science you’d understand just how intensive and time consuming this process has been to replicate. I’ve needed my finest staff on this and had to hire a few extras, which is not kind to my payroll.”

“Ooh, lemme play ya a song on m’banjo, saddest one in the history of the empire, Shishi.” Said Rhyssa, singsong and mocking, actually taking out her instrument as if she was about to start strumming.

Inshii rolled their eyes and ignored her, so Rhyssa pouted and put it away.

Gallen stopped and looked around, not in any hurry to get to what came next. He put his hands in his shorts’ pockets, feeling for the hundredth time that the vial of cloudy liquid was still there.

“Come on.” Called Inshii impatiently. “You’d think we were dragging you to an atheist convention.”

He opened his mouth to huff silently, not wanting to let himself feel amused, and kept walking.

He couldn’t. He had to…he had to…

Gallen twisted inside, hundreds of small legs wriggling and grasping at each other.

He followed his oldest sibling, just like he always had for millennia.

Obedient Gallen. Peaceable Gallen.

Even before mother had taken his tongue, he’d always been like that.

Inshii led him and Rhyssa down a narrow hallway, their precise steps echoing in the near-silence. The faint buzz of electric illumination was the only sound.

Then the lights flickered for a second.

Gallen blinked, looking at his sibling inquiringly. Inshii sighed, their brightly colored fins flicking.

“That’s how much power this has taken. We have backup generators, more than enough…but that’s happened plenty of times over the past few perigees. All Lifeweaver had to do was make a troll body that could meld with a swarm. I’ve had to achieve far more than that.”

“What d’ya mean?” Rhyssa asked, sounding genuinely curious as she ran a finger through her shoulder-length hair.

Inshii’s eyebrows raised in mild surprise, but they stopped, facing their sister with their arms crossed.

“When Mother fell and fused with a mother grub, she became undead. Etuuya was alive when they were merged with Lleios’s remains, integrated over multiple operations so they wouldn’t die of shock or blood loss.

I don’t have that luxury; she’s weak and unstable enough that if I fail now, I might not be able to try again and keep her mind intact.

She can’t be killed…but suffering eternally in that carcass of a body, her mind slipping more and more until she forgets us all? She might wish she was dead.” The butterfly swarm said bluntly.

Rhyssa had taken her hat off to hold it, as a gesture of respect. Gallen bowed his head to go along with her, and so he could compose himself.

Klirro was right. Tuuya was right. Everything Inshii said confirmed it.

If he could do this, even with the hell that would come of it, everything would get better.

His hands shook as Rhyssa put her hat back on.

Inshii’s face softened slightly, an unusual sight.

“Don’t worry, Gallen.” They said in a marginally warmer tone, as caring as they had been capable of since the ten had died all those sweeps ago.

“I’ve accounted for everything; I will not fail. She’ll finally be well again.”

No, they hadn’t accounted for everything. They had no idea what their little brother had in his pocket. A substance modeled from the same scientific notes Inshii had used for this project.

Another one of Rhomox Vannyn’s discoveries.

Inshii kept walking a little longer, then stopped in front of a plain gray, unmarked door, flashing their ID card at a scanner once more.

Gallen would have whistled if he could, so instead it was tuneless air blown through his lips as he walked inside, and Rhyssa herself made a softly impressed ‘aaah.’

Inshii looked a bit smug, despite their sibling’s frequent insistence that they didn’t indulge in such trollish things.

The space was vast, a tangle of pipes, vats, and scientific equipment whose names the isopod swarm couldn’t even begin to guess at. Dials all over the room glowed from within, and somewhere a machine beeped softly in long intervals.

Long hair flowing as they moved more quickly, the false seadweller walked over to the largest vat of all, one taller than their nearly eight foot height, horns aside.

Gallen knew, with a sudden surge of fear, that that was it.

Rhyssa turned completely toward it as well, the wasps she used to see beating their wings frantically as they hovered over her shoulders.

Inshii looked at the various readout screens on the vat and what they saw must’ve pleased his oldest sibling because they nodded and took out a beautiful old glass container shaped like a chrysalis. The glass shone jade and white where it was not clear.

Gallen shuddered as he saw several of his mother’s green flukes wriggling within. Just like the one that had taken over Tuuya.

Wait.

He signed a question.

Isn’t that -

“Vassiq’s work, one of the last she ever made.” Said Inshii quietly, holding the container with reverence. “One of the few we have left.”

Gallen couldn’t cry as trolls did. He had no heart.

Still he trembled, isopods pressing against his skin.

Vassiq. The fly. Dead because she’d tried to kill Ozryel with the other ten, her eggshell destroyed and her corpse burned. Dead because she’d just wanted to be free.

She’d been the best artisan of them all.

How could Inshii stand there and use their sister’s work to hold her killer?

Rhyssa was unusually still, even her wings beating slowly from the parts she used as eyes.

“Will you offer us a prayer, Gallen?” Inshii asked, solemn.

He looked at them in shock, his face rippling in surprise. Inshii had never thought much of religion.

He wished he had incense to light, an altar to kneel by by. He wished he could believe there was anything holy about what they were about to do.

Still he closed his eyes and put a hand to his chest.

He prayed Inshii was wrong, that his mother could be laid to rest after all.

He prayed whatever afterlife she went to was a kind one. A peaceful one.

He prayed his hands would not falter as he did to her what Rhomox Vannyn had done to Lleios. Wipe away the mind, leave the body behind.

Gallen hoped so hard for all of this that he hurt, and then his hand dropped from his chest. He nodded at Inshii, glad he couldn’t speak.

Rhyssa sniffed. With no tears to shed, she tugged at the band covering her wasp-filled sockets instead.

“I hope this works.” She mumbled. “It’ll be like old times. When we were all together, and everythin’ was perfect.”

Everything had never been perfect. Their siblings would still be dead. Ozryel had driven them to desperation when they were alive, had refused to listen when they’d tried to reason with her.

Gallen regretted not helping them. Not taking a side. If he had…

If he had, it probably wouldn’t have made a difference.

Nothing he’d done for his family ever had.

Inshii pressed a button, and the lid of the vat slid back with a faint sliding noise, impressively quiet for how large it was.

He could smell it now. The organic stench of nutrient-rich solution used to grow facsimile bodies.

Inshii stepped onto a ladder bolted to the side of the vat and he held up a hand. They raised their eyebrows, fins flicking.

He signed, Can I go up after you?

“Don’t be silly, Gallen.” Inshii said, tongue clicking. “There’s no space. I’ll bring her down so we can witness her awakening. It will likely take a minute or so.”

Good. That was all he needed.

He nodded to show he understood.

Inshii went up the ladder, their sherwani rippling from their movement. He - and Rhyssa - watched them intently.

What would their sibling bring down? What body had they made for Ozryel?

Though he writhed with nervousness, resignation settling heavy into his chitin, Gallen couldn’t help but be curious. He’d known her current shape for so long, it was difficult to imagine her in another.

He and his sister watched as Inshii took a fluke out of the glass container…and used their other hand - now in a rubber glove - to gently pick up a troll-shaped body. Viscous drops of amber fluid slowly dribbled off of it.

The view was partially blocked by their sibling, but Gallen could see the body’s eyes were closed, that it had long white hair and pale horns that resembled his mother’s.

They moved their arm. He could only assume they were putting the fluke in.

No noise. Nothing.

Inshii carried the body down in both arms, container put back in their sylladex, its - her - eyes still closed. She didn’t move.

Vial in his hand, Gallen lunged.

Rhyssa cried out and Inshii barked an order to stop. Neither moved quickly enough to stop him as he forced the contents down Ozryel’s throat.

Then his sister tackled him to the hard floor, snarling and buzzing as she swore and stung him over and over, ripping through his skin to the isopods beneath.

Gallen did not fight back even as dozens of his isopods thrashed and died. He lay there, letting her wound him, staring up at the pale ceiling and the dark pipes running along it.

He wondered if he was about to wake up in his eggshell, a sparse few isopods once more.

“Stop.” Inshii’s clipped voice said through his haze of pain. “Let mother handle him. The serum is working.”

Rhyssa gasped in relief and Gallen’s hopes sank in dread as he saw his mother’s pale gray fingertips moving, noticed the syringe in Inshii’s hand as they gave him a narrow-eyed violet stare.

“I don’t know why you’ve done this, but I can guess. You’ve betrayed us, gone over to Tuuya and their allies. I’d ask you why…but I don’t think I care.”

Feebly, Gallen tried to use his arms to sign an answer, but Rhyssa stung them and they collapsed into dying isopods.

His mother’s eyes flickered and opened, glowing a solid, brilliant green. Shorter than all of them, slim and almost petite, she vaulted out of her oldest child’s arms to land on the floor with a thud, her feet bare. Her only clothing was a pale teal dress, and she still dripped fluid on the floor as she stepped over to him. The pincers at the edges of her lips snapped in fury as her eyes shone with rage and delight.

“My only son.” She said, with a dry and raspy voice, different yet unmistakably familiar, unused to speaking aloud. “My last son. Why do you turn on me? The only mother you’ve ever had?”

Her tone was gently chiding, almost fond, but Gallen knew that meant nothing.

He spoke in the silent language of swarms, isopods forming shapes and symbols that all of his family read without comment.

“So misguided.” His mother said, still soft. “It isn’t your fault. You were tricked. You forget your siblings’ cruelty. They were unkind to you too.”

Gallen shook his head. She was lying. He had to remember she was lying.

Ozryel clicked her tongue.

“You’ve been very bad. You need a time-out.”

She knelt down next to him and put a hand to his chest. Right where he had when he’d prayed earlier.

Green flukes came out of her wrist, squirming over his remaining isopods to secrete liquid that dissolved him, segment by segment, leg by leg. He soundlessly screamed in agony, bereft of the tongue she had taken so long ago. The voice she’d silenced for the crime of not taking a side.

“Leave one.” Said Inshii, voice hard. “He can stay here. Otherwise who knows where he’ll go when he comes back in the cavern.”

Rhyssa snarled. “Yeah, what Shii said. We can’t let him outta our sight.”

“You don’t give me orders, children.” Murmured Ozryel in a tone of saccharine warning. “I’ll concede the butterfly is right this time. Just mind your tone, or I might think you intend to join your brother.”

Rhyssa opened her mouth, and as Gallen’s troll eyes melted away, he could see the hurt on his sister’s face before she closed it again.

In less than a minute, there was only one of him. A single white isopod, shivering as his mother picked him up in one hand. Helpless to resist her firm grip, she squeezed him so hard he nearly cracked, his legs struggling against her cold hand.

She leaned in to whisper so he could hear.

“Next time I won’t be so generous.”

His vision in this state was too poor to grasp what happened around him, but the next thing he knew, Gallen was locked in a dark, airless box with needles puncturing him all over his body.

He couldn’t move. Couldn’t see, or hear, or feel anything but pain and constriction.

The isopod prayed.

He prayed for the people he had failed so terribly.

He wished with everything he had that his mother would finally die.

Ozryel patted the box she had locked her son in, with a soft, needle-fanged smile, then set it aside.

Pausing, concentrating, she clenched her fists and there came a great cracking of bone, a sliding and warping of flesh as wings sprung from her back. Insectoid, yet shaped as if they were feathered, they shone with iridescent hints of rainbow color.

“Fly with me, children. We make for Hanhai.”

Rhyssa scratched her head.

“The desert? What d’ya want there? Thought we were goin’ after Tuuya and their lot.”

Inshii’s eyes also narrowed, then their expression cleared.

“Ah. Their daughter’s cavern.”

Ozryel gave her oldest child a feral smile.

“Kotenkha’s as well. One of her spawn fought me in the second worm’s body, allowing them to escape…it is long past time I gave that bloodline their due.”

The mother of swarms stepped outside the building, squinting as her eyes adjusted to the starlight she had not seen in over four thousand sweeps.

Ever since a wretched jade woman with a komondor lusus had shot her out of the sky.

Top 10 Video Games of All Time: bobgoesw00t Edition (Part 07)

We’re getting down to the nitty gritty of this list and it’s time to reveal my Number 4 game:

I had a REALLY hard time picking which entry in the Tales of Series to use as there are SO MANY GOOD GAMES IN IT!!! It was a tie between Abyss, Vesperia, Xillia, Xillia 2, Zestiria and Berseria but I ended up going with this one in the end for a few reasons.

The first one being that other than Symphonia and maybe Vesperia, this is the entry I’ve played the most and I have a blast with it every time. Secondly, combat in Abyss is one of the best IMO and literally every game after it has payed homage to it in some way. The last reason is something I’ll get to a bit later, as I want to talk about the overall gameplay for a bit.

Abyss took the Multi-Line Linear Motion Battle System from Symphonia and amped it up to 11 with the Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System. Giving us the Free Run ability added a new layer of depth to battles, and they simplified how Mystic Artes work from the last game that was released outside of Japan with the AD Skills. When you throw in the Field of Fonon system that can alter the various artes if you use a certain one while it’s active, battles get even more explosion than before. Not to mention this is the first game IMO were every character controls well and is fun to use. Luke and Guy are your typical melee users, while Tear and Jade function as the healer and elemental DPS and kick ass at it. Natalia can dish out large amounts of damage with her bow and she also functions as the main buffer with strong single target heals, making her a worthy addition to the party. Lastly, Anise and Asch (who is playable for a small portion unless your playing on the PS2 and know about a certain glitch which I’ll get to in just a second) are cool hybrid characters that have decent melee attacks and can harass foes from the back line with offensive spells.

I HAVE to address the black sheep (in a manner of speaking) of the cast that is Asch, who is actually (I feel like I can spoil this twist as it’s revealed fairly early in the story) the real Luke who is playable for about…two hours or so in the main story depending on how much time you spend on other things and is kind of awesome. Some people prefer using him over Luke due to him being a bit faster and him having the ability to use offensive spells mid battle and in the original PS2 release of the game, there was a glitch that allowed you to actually have him replace Luke for the remainder of the game. The Map Glitch let you run to other areas before they could be accessed and was rather useful over all but they ended up patching it for the 3DS re-release as the game will crash if you remove the game card without properly closing it.

Which is something else I want to mention. I actually think the 3DS version of the game is better than the PS2 version due to the original having a glaring number of bugs (most of them weren’t game breaking but there is one that made it almost impossible to use one of the more powerful Mystic Artes in the later stages of the game without the entire thing crashing) and stupidly long loading times. The change from a PS2 DVD to a 3DS Game Card shrunk the load times MASSIVELY and most of the bugs ended up being addressed to better polish everything and while I’m not 100% sure, I think they removed the bug I mentioned earlier when you try to use Lost Fon Drive.

OK, enough about the gameplay onto the story. Some people say the story moves slowly while others think it goes by quickly. I’m in the opinion that it moves at a decent pace and there are indeed points where the pace fluctuates but there aren’t very many to be honest. The game does a good job explaining various aspects of the world, there are a variety of locations and the cast is INCREDIBLY well acted with special shout outs to Kirk Thornton as Jade and Melissa Fahn as Anise for being able to switch between being serious and cracking a joke a second later. Not to mention how hilarious the banter between Jade and Dist is at various times…especially the bit before the part goes to Mt. Roneal and Dist is passed out at the Inn. I also love how a good chunk of the reoccurring bosses (the Six God Generals) also have sympathetic backgrounds, Sync being my favorite. I JUST WANT TO HUG HIM AND TELL HIM EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT!!! HE DIDN’T NEED TO DIE IMO AND I STILL GET MOPEY AT THE LAST BOSS FIGHT AGAINST HIM!!!!! Speaking of the ending, this is the one ending in the franchise that still causes me to tear up at the very end no matter how many times I’ve seen it. The way the last scene starts with Tear singing with the rest of the party around her and then Luke shows up to keep his promise is just GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH MY HEART CAN’T TAKE IT!!!!!!!

Lastly have to mention how Abyss has one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE scores in the Tales of Series with Motoi Sakuraba delivering some of the best tracks ever, the first battle theme “An Arrow was Shot” gets you into a frenzy and ready for a fight. “Awkward Justice”, the God General boss theme is intense and epic, while “Everlasting Fight” which plays during the cameo battle in the coliseum is the previous track with the intensity blasted into space. Lastly, we have the theme song for the game “Karma” by BUMP OF CHICKEN. This was the first time were the theme was kept the same internationally with the only difference being that they replaced the vocals with Electric Guitars making the song a bit more intense IMO.

This was nice as the next two games to be released in the West kept the vocals with the lyrics being translated into English while still being sung by the original artist. Xillia and Xillia 2 took that one step further and ACTUALLY KEPT PROGRESS AND SONG 4 U AS THE THEME IN THE WEST WITHOUT TRANSLATING THE LYRICS which was the right call cause I don’t think using an Instrumental version of those songs would have worked in the end. Which is why when it was announced that Zestiria was going to be the first entry to have a dual audio option, I had a tiny nerdgasm…which quickly flew out the window when it was discovered that the west would NOT be getting the original version of White Light by Superfly, but an instrumental version in the same vein as Karma for various contract issues with Superfly and their agency. I was pissed but thankfully the PC can be modded to play the original so I ended up getting it on Steam. BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT HOOHAA AND ON TO THE SCORE!!!

Tales of the Abyss is the first game to have a truly 3D real-time battle system which is still one of the best versions of the Linear Motion Battle System to date, a strong story with an ending that makes me shed tears of joy EVERY DAMN TIME I GET TO IT, a cast of party members that are outright hilarious at times, and one of the best soundtracks Motoi Sakuraba has composed for this long running franchise. bogoesw00t here gives it a 5 out of 5: 5/5

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Tales of Zestiria: Even with the whole bullshit of them giving us a shitty instrumental version of White Light that doesn’t work as well as it did for Karma (due to the latter being a fast-paced song and White Light being more slow and intense), this is still a great game with one of my favorite cast of playable characters (Sorey is so adorkable, Edna is fucking hysterical and Meebo/Touchy-Feeleo IS TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH SOREY GO AHEAD AND @ ME BUT SORMIK IS CANON), a unique combat system (the complaint that the game FORCES you to Armatize is a load of bullshit as it can actually hurt you to use it in every fight for various reasons which I’ll get into if I ever review it) and a really cool villain.

Tales of Berseria: The prequel to Zestiria addressed a good chunk of complaints people had about the last game, fixed them, and helped flesh out the world the games are set in, gave us one hell of a BADASS protagonist with Velvet Crowe and a colorful cast of allies to join her (Magilou can be totally broken in battle and is even funnier than Edna IMO while Laphicet is THE MOST PURE AND PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLL THE FRANCHISE HAS EVER HAD), a battle system that’s easy to learn but can be difficult to master, and a villain that you just want to CRUSH after he shatters Velvet’s world (even more so if you’ve seen the original, uncensored cutscene when he kills Velvet’s little brother. They tried to keep the impact the same in the west, but it doesn’t hit nearly as hard IMO)

i once wrote the everythings, about my beautiful love. the girl who took my life from shades of charcoal and soot and replaced them with hues of jade green and mandarin orange. the girl who i thought would just be another passer-by, but turned out to be my whole life in one human being. the girl who stands 5’8” (which she’ll remind you of), with deep, magnetic brown eyes, a voice as soft as summer rain, and a smile that makes everything else in the vicinity melt away.

the girl, her name is mar. and the first time i ever wrote about her, i wrote about how her name suits her. how she is like the sea. how she’s calming, but powerful. how she’s vast, but familiar. i still think about her like that to this day.

but this is the everythings, part two:

for my sweet love,

it’s been a few months since the everythings. we’ve been through so much together in these months. we’ve learned from one another, laughed uncontrollably, been there for each other through trying times, and cried together (well mostly me crying and you attempting to get me to stop).

but in these months, i’ve found so many more everythings i’d like to share with you baby.

- the way you wrote “my everythings” and how it showed me that you really do always meet me halfway, without me asking.

- the way you write, whether out of love, or trauma, or distress, it’s beautiful. the way you speak so eloquently, it’s mesmerizing.

- your perspective, and how you see life with such a unique view of things. how you have this innate ability to change your perspective in order to understand pretty much anyone you come into contact with.

- how stubborn you are (and you’ll argue this one, but it’s true). you’re hardheaded, set in your ways sometimes, and rightfully so.

-how you pronounce the word “yesterday”

- how even when i’m crying, overwhelmed, and upset, you can say one line to make me laugh and i can’t even remember why i was crying in the first place

- your intelligence, and i know others have made you doubt that sometimes, but you are so intelligent. you’re probably the most emotionally intelligent person i’ve ever met. you’re also smart, like smart smart, smart with words and always learning new things, picking up everything so quickly

- the way you edit, and it seems silly, but i could watch you on Vegas for hours even though i have absolutely no idea what you’re doing (but i know you’re good at it)

- how you don’t use auto-caps

- how you take time each day to have a bath

- how you tuck dino in at night

- the way you read to me at night, how you have to sound out some words sometimes till you get it right. and i know you can be self conscious about it, but i think it’s incredibly endearing

- how you ask me what words mean occasionally (bc i get to feel smart for a few seconds hehe)

- how you eat your hot cheetos over discord, and i don’t say anything half the time because i know you’d mute, and honestly i like hearing you munch :)

- how even if i’m showing you something that has no particular interest to you, you listen and ask questions anyway

- how you push me to be the best version of myself, and how i’m already seeing progress because of you

- the way you tell me “i love you for who you are and who you want to be”

- the way you laugh differently depending on what you’re laughing at (you laugh the loudest if it’s at me btw)

- how you always make sure to see things from my point of view, even if i’m having trouble doing the same

- how you are so incredibly patient

- the way you kiss me through the phone, sometimes i close my eyes and it’s almost as if you’re here, kissing me

- the way you’ve let me love you entirely, how planning our future together and looking at apartments never scared you away

- how you always greet monkas when she walks in the room and starts meowing

- the way your breathing rises and falls at night, i’ve memorized the tempo and pitch by now

- the way when you’re sleepy, you start sounding discombobulated

- how you say “discombobulated” at least once a day since you learned it

- how you care for me, make sure i have everything i need if i’m sick (even though i yell at you for spending so much money on me)

- i love the way you speak to me, so softly, but with everyone else you act all tough

- i love your determination, even though things may not turn out the way you had hoped, you still push through, you make a different path for yourself

- i love the way you greet me on the phone, how no matter if it’s been five minutes or a whole day, you sound just as excited

- how you go through our old texts and tell me about them

- the way you treat your nephews, how i know if we ever do decide to have kids, i would know you would be incredible with them

- the way you mumble “good morning” to me on the phone, and how i’m the luckiest girl in the world to be the first one to hear your voice each day

- the way you do my ocd routine with me at night, and have never judged me or shamed me for it

- how you’ve come so far with your communication, and I’m proud of you baby

- how from head to toe, outside and inside, you are my whole life in one person. i look at you and see my entire life in you, sweetheart. the most beautiful girl i’ve ever seen, talked to, been around, you are unmatched.

these are just some of the everythings. as always, there will be more. i wanna thank you, baby, for the everythings. i’m so proud of you. i’m so grateful for you. i never forget how lucky i am to be yours. thank you so much, my love, for letting me love you and loving me back. look at us, who would have thought?

Hiiii Eri! Quickly dropping off to tell you that I love how you NSR-ify characters who are from different series! (Do you have any tips? Or designs you’re proud of?)

Aw! Thank you so much! Glad you like them!

I would say the designs I am most proud of, or like the ones I like to look at the most, would be Miwa, Gayatri, Pav, Peni, and Jade!

I like those designs the most because, to me, they seem to fit the vibe of NSR the most. Well, maybe Miwa and Jade could use more tweaks to make them even more NSR-like but I like the designs I came up with for them despite that!

As for tips? Hmmm... I would say the first thing you might want to do is get the "style" of the game down. You know, the big hands and feet (with some exceptions like with Eve's body) as well as making sure to have good color combinations.

Though you can always have your own style and don't HAVE to copy the game's style at all! It does help make a character look like an NSR character if you copy the body type, kinda like a cheat or something (but I've seen plenty of non NSR styles out there and can still tell who the character is so like I said, that's not entirely something you have to do to NSR-ify a character).

I'll say, to me, the most important thing for NSR-ifying a character is the colors! You can have a totally different style, but it's the colors that really help sell that the character is an NSR character (at least that is how I feel about it).

It's hard to give tips on how to color a character other than to say study some color theory. I tend to do a majority warm or cool color and then have an accent of the opposite (so majority warm color and then an accent of a cool color).

I also tend to try and keep things down to 3 colors for a body/character unless I am doing something extra or an exception.

Eyes, skin, and hair. Those are the three main things I work with for a base and then add onto the design depending on what I am doing.

Peni has blue hair, red skin, and yellow eyes. That is kits base. I then added the little extra flairs such as the yellow skin condition and the light blue hair highlights. But my main focus was keeping the base hair, eyes, and skin cohesive before adding more onto the character.

Same for Miwa. She has blue hair, purpley-grey eyes, and beige-grey skin. And usually you would have a lot more saturated colors for an NSR character, but Miwa is an exception with more muted tones. Her hair and eyes are also given a special treatment with misty hair and shaped eyes like Mayday.

Then you have Gayatri who has purple skin, blue hair, and then multicolored eyes with a special white pupil. She has a basic design but her eyes are her gimmick.

And honestly that is probably the main thing I would suggest you do. Keep things simple and don't put too many ideas/themes into one character design.

Imagine if Eve had her skin condition, as well as an eye shape, and even a special hair or added elemental components on top of her mind theme and extra limbs gimmick. That would be WAY too much for a single character (at least in my opinion).

Mama is a super simple character. She really only has skin and eyes to worry about since she doesn't have any real "hair" (depending on how you see her head tail thingy). However, she has a whole tree/rose bush gimmick that makes up for that (as well as the heart motif on her head and dual toned eyes).

So when I personally make a character (either NSR-ifying one or making an OC), I look at the designs that the game has done and pick a few to possibly use for a design without picking too many.

If a character has a very unique trait (like Hobie's skin condition) then I tend to only give them that one trait only.

If a character has multiple kinda unique traits (like Miwa's hair and eyes, or Yinu's eyes and flower hair) then I try to make one trait more "important" or like visible than the other.

You can also have a character with no real unique traits at all, or at least a very minor unique trait (like Bunny in general or Gaya's eyes), which will allow you to over complicate the character design since there is nothing else you really have to worry about (like Bunny's design gets her uniqueness from her style and fashion, not from her natural body's traits which there isn't anything like elemental or a skin condition or anything like that).

You can also make it so that the character's unique trait makes them look less "unique" in a stereotypical sense. Noir and Mia have conditions which makes them unique by getting rid of the color aspect of the NSR world (Noir being greytones and Mia having pink eyes, hair, and skin that she needs to change herself with dye and contact lenses).

I would say find general design elements you like from NSR (eye shape, eye color, skin color, skin conditions, elemental theme, hair color, hair shape, etc.) and only choose one or two things when you want to NSR-ify a character or make an OC.

Hope that makes sense! You can always just ignore this though and just choose to make a character with a ton of these elemental designs that NSR has given!

Just look at my OC Ilma! She has special eye shapes (crystal) as well as coloring (based on her emotion). She has a split elemental hair type (space/fire and feathers). As well as a special mouth and hands (beak and claws).

Very much she has a lot going on for her, but I don't have a LOT of characters with this kind of over complex design. Which is why I am able to have a character like her in my opinion. I feel like if I made EVERY single NSR OC or NSR-ified character super over complicated, then the whole cast becomes disjointed but also they feel less like NSR characters.

So yea, you can even make your own design type to add into the little list I already gave (such as Ilma having a beak, you can make it so that lip types are a thing that can change or even something like teeth type. It doesn't have to be just things with eye colors and shapes or hair or skin).

But I would say, for starting off, try to replicate the NSR style if you want, but at the very least try following some design elements from NSR's character designs with your own twist! Keep the super unique design elements with more simple overall design, while the more common design elements can be combined together or given to an over complicated character design!

Oliver Stark’s Full Instagram Live Transcript from 2/16/2022

Alright listen, so uh second half of 911 comes back in about a months time, on the 21st of March I believe. So uh, figured if anybody had some questions about what’s coming up, I got some time to kill. I got an appointment so uh yeah let’s do it.

Q: How do I feel that you named your cat after me?

A: Is that Oliver or is that Buck?

Q: More Buck and Chris scenes?

A: I think we have a scene in the first episode of uh the second half so that’s episode 11. We definitely have a scene in episode 14, 13. I think it airs as 14. Uh whatever um the episode is called “Dumb Luck”, there’s a cool scene in there.

Q: What’s your fave scene you’ve filmed so far?

A: You know one of my favorites of the upcoming things I think in episode 11 is a very very big rescue um that yeah I was looking forward to shooting that for a long time.

No I’m not at work. I’m outside a grocery store waiting to go somewhere else for an appointment.

Yeah Ryan is still in the show. He, he, he said that he was going to leave the 118 uh but he’s certainly not leaving the show uh not at all.

Q: Are you gonna get your hearts broken?

A: Uh I don’t know I mean it depends on what your heart…desires I suppose. Um some people will, some people won’t. But there’s lots of cool stories coming up that I think people are gonna like really like some of it…all of it.

Q: Which is my favorite, the first half or the second half?

A: I really like some of the stuff we are doing in the second half of the season. It feels really fun but still hard hitting and uh so I’m really excited for that.

Q: I love Oliver better than Buck.

A: Well that’s nice I guess.

Q: How many episodes?

A: There’s gonna be 8 more episodes of this season. So 18 for the whole season.

Sorry I’m reading through things that feel fun to answer.

Q: Is it my own voice on 911 or is it another guy with an American accent?

A: Um no it’s me.

Yeah Maddie and Chimney are coming back. I think that’s not a spoiler because it’s common knowledge. Yeah I think within the first few episodes of the season they will be returning.

Q: Is this the final season?

A: Uh I don’t know. We haven’t been picked up yet but I hope that does happen. You know you can continue to watch and that’ll certainly help our chances.

Q: Uh ok…any scenes of me and Jee?

A: Yes what episode? One of the first few episodes. It’s my first one that, well actually I don’t know if it’ll make it to air. I assume it will but we have one scene before but yeah the scene got shot before she came in.

Yes there is an uncle Buck scene coming up. It was fun to play with her. The various babies they have to play Jee, they’re all very very sweet.

Accent, accent, accent (everyone was talking about his accent 😂)

Yeah I don’t um…show dog now. Uh Jade is not with me. She’s at home. Probably chewing something up. That she shouldn’t be. I wish she was with me.

I would love to do another crossover. I don’t know. We got a few episodes left of the season. It’s different with Covid regulations and um there’s a struggle to coordinate but I do think there’s some mini crossover action expected.

Q: Were you nervous to work with a baby?

A: Uh no, I was not.

No I do not believe Abby will ever be coming back.

Q: Would you ever explore the idea of Buck having ADHD

A: Yeah back in the day when I was on Twitter an account broke it down for me. That account was somebody I believe who had ADHD and how they felt represented in some of the choices and uh um impulses and decisions that Buck made and I thought that was really really cool. Um so I think that’ll be a really lovely thing to get to explore within the show. I don’t know whether or not that would happen but either way I think it’s really lovely that people can see that being represented in some kind of way. I know for that particular person back when we spoke about it, it was these were traits that they didn’t always see as a positive thing in their own life but I think through the character, were able to see those attributes that really helped Buck be the hero that he is and you know see those in a much more positive light and I think that’s a really lovely thing.

Q: Thinking of going vegan this year as a goal. Best advice on how to start?

A: Small, do it however it is the most accessible way to you. Don’t put any pressure on yourself. I’m not sure who’ve said this but there’s this, I feel like I’ve seen it on my social media a lot. Like lots of imperfect vegans is better than less perfect vegans, did I say that right? I think I did.

Q: What have I learned from playing Buck?

A: You know I think he makes me a little bit braver. Like I do things on the show as Buck that has as Oliver I’d be scared to do. There’s a huge stunt in episode I think episode 14 that I was uh 235 ft, maybe I’m making it up. But 235 ft or so I’m in the air uh on a line, it’s a rope rescue. And I did it on the 13th floor of this high-rise building. Like me personally I’d be very scared to go up there but there’s something about doing it as Buck that I am much more able to throw myself into it and do things that yeah in real life I’ve never.

Q: Do you identify as a menace?

A: *laughs*

Yeah I do believe that fun Buck is coming back and you will see more of fun Buck in the upcoming season.

Q: Favorite partner to work with?

A: I don’t really like any of them. It’s a joke as I’m sure you know.

Q: My pets names?

A: Jade is my dog and Norman is my cat.

Probably riveting stuff for me just reading through all this.

Q: Why’d you change your bio to fruit?

A: My bio was eat your vegetables now I think it’s eat some fruit. Fruits delicious, fruits the best food in the world. You don’t care about this.

All right um probably, I’ve probably said everything I need to say but yeah no listen this season is coming back March 21 with really cool episodes. I think people are going to be really happy with some of the stuff we dive into. Um I think certain characters in particular are really going to get a chance to dive in and explore some of the trauma that we’ve seen that experience over the past few seasons which I think is a really lovely thing and really necessary things so yeah I think that people will feel well served and I’m excited to have all of your eyes on it.
