#and about their skillsets and magic
editing echoseers some more. forgot that one of the very first lines we ever get in dusk's pov is "[T]he last time emotions rolled off of him so strongly, he couldn’t stop the impulse to bury a fork up to the root of the tines in his own leg."
also forgot how niche the arc 2 crew's individual Capital I Issues are and how much more deeply fucked up they are compared to the arc 1 cast. and i literally just have the one interlude chapter to look at them in detail before tossing the reader right back to the plot

You know a world where your ability to carry something is determined by quantity rather than size or weight is very easy to accept in a video game, because of mechanical convenience, but would probably be so strange in a story in any other medium, and I think a few more books and shows could stand to get a little funkier with the fundamentals of their reality like that.

hang on lemme cook
the short of it is that this kingdom is being absolutely ravaged by a chaos mage. the way chaos works in this setting is it can only be redirected, not destroyed, and it often takes the form of this crackling purple lightning, with strong concentrations of it forming these terrifying tornados. for some reason, the chaos mage is strangely unaffected, and seemingly immortal.
in some small town, a brother and sister are both mages. through some means, the brother acquires this ancient golden coin (either as an heirloom or through shenanigans), which it turns out has the power to absorb chaos.
but, again, it can't be destroyed. the chaos has to go somewhere. the way the coin works, i figure, is by absorbing the chaos into the wielder. the first time he uses it it absolutely nearly kills him, but repeated use sort of inures him to the effects of chaos, but also is absolutely doing some Fascinating shit to him.
as an aside, the difficult thing with this would be making it clear that the thing that turns him into a villain isn't like, chaos poisoning, but his personality lmao
but he gets stronger and stronger as he faces more of the chaos mage's manipulated chaos, and having access to all that chaos inside himself incentivises him to learn how to use it as well. like disarming someone and stabbing them with their own sword.
except, of course, the Chaos Mage is practically immune to the effects of chaos, and has been rendered immortal by it. warriors and mages have tried to defeat him the Usual Ways, and have found no luck.
so how do you defeat the Chaos Mage?
by taking the ancient coin and using it to absorb all the chaos from inside him, stealing from him the reservoir of his magic and also the power that has made him immortal. you render him mortal. you kill him.
but only the kid, inured as he is to chaos, could possibly stand a chance of successfully absorbing that chaos. if someone else, like his sister, tried to do it, the chaos entering her body would kill her before it leaving would kill the Chaos Mage.
and so the brother slays the chaos mage, in the process claiming his power.
which means the brother is now immortal, and practically immune to the effects of chaos, while also being the only person who could possibly wield the coin to defeat him. Oh Fuck.
now there is a way that this COULD end well. if the brother voluntarily gave up his power, travelled to some distant realm of storm to unleash the chaos from inside him, then he would lose that immortality, and a decent amount of his chaotic immunity, while still being an unfathomably powerful mage.
but he won't. of course he wont. because the brother has come to the conclusion that, with his power over chaos, he could Fix things. he could make things Right. he could manipulate chaos to remake the world in his image. He has become the Chaos Mage.
its not the inherent nature of chaos that has done this. its the way those around him have responded to this skillset of his, the hero worship he was granted by many as the only person standing between them and the Chaos Mage. his instinct to take charge, to give orders. uhoh!
so he won't give up his power. and noone can take his power from him.
his sister, who long ago figured out that the chaos mage was her brother, somehow, is thus incentivised to, regretfully, fulfill the loop. the chaos mage was her brother, thousands of years older, full of chaos, without the coin, and yet with identical memories of their childhood together. there must be a way to turn her brother into that man. she must be able to send him Back.
however that is, its not that important. she has to trick him to get it to work. she would have told him, prior to the showdown with the chaos mage, that she thought they were the same. he would have used his defeat of the chaos mage as proof that they weren't.
she has to get the coin off him, and she has to send him back.
i imagine it probably involves preying on his ego. convincing the king or whatever to hold a great ceremony granting the brother some title. the sister finding some way to take the coin away from him. in the middle of the ceremony unleashing this spell on him. having to watch his expression change from an arrogant glee to confused horror to bitter rage. and whoosh.
#story blogging#i think this basically works#that his skillset is what makes him dangerous and the only person who could defeat him#is himself+a magic item#the sister does not have a good time throughout the story just by all the shit that happened in the dream#like she was barely in it (classic subconscious misogyny /j) but she cannot be having a good time#and it makes sense that she would be the one to ultimately dfeat her brother in the way that matters to the future#its a closed loop. her brother goes back to become the chaos mage. the brother kills the chaos mage. he becomes the chaos mage#and everyone else continues onward. no one person experiences the loop#by the time the chaos mage reaches the present day its not clear how much he knows or remembers about himself#though i imagine in the moment of his defeat he realises what is happening to him#and what this means. is it funny to know your killer becomes you in the end?#to realise in the final moments that you are locked in a timeloop you can only experience in part?#to know that you are fated to be locked in this duel for all eternity while the world moves on without you?#for a character who wanted absolute control? thats a sobering thought#that control of your narrative was taken from you. BY you! you did it to yourself!#he realises that only at the end!#if the brother realised it then as well then he could break it.#its not a cycle in the sense that it never moves forward. but the brother COULD break it#but he never will. thats the way he is. he isn't capable of breaking that loop. he never will be#because he is always the same. he responds to the events the same each time#he will never relinquish his power. he will always fall at his own hand with his power stolen from him#its vicious! its fucking weird!#and in my dream the books for it had sick gold embossed covers. it was awesome

So this is just my take, but the key to understanding Kabru Dungeon Meshi is understanding that the Touden's party was one of the top parties in the dungeon.
You eventually learn the mission they were on when they encountered the red dragon, and it involved going as far into the dungeon as anybody had gone before. Their party lineup was two top-level mages, Marcille and Falin (okay, Marcille's practical magic skills are kind of questionable, but we're told that Falin was extremely talented within her areas of specialty) Two excellent fighters: Shuro and Namari, and Chilchuck, who considering that he runs the guild, is likely one of the most experienced half-foot trapsmiths working on the island. Laios is party leader, and while he's not the greatest fighter, he's quite good, and his obsessive knowledge of monsters means that he can guide the others. You see how Laois's knowledge helps the party already, now imagine if they had a support caster, a dwarf whose almost certainly a much better fighter than Senshi, and another tallman who is almost certainly a much better fighter than Laois all working on that knowledge.
So with that in mind, lets revisit Kabru and his obsession. Kabru knows people, and can read them very well. He's also got a wider perspective on the nature and danger of dungeons due to his backstory. Kabru isn't here to get rich delving the dungeon, he's here to Solve A Problem. He's a relatively recent arrival to the island, that or his mismatched skillset means that he and his party are much slower to progress through it than the Touden's party. Either way, he spots the Touden party as The Party To Watch when it comes to conquering the dungeon. Laois, as party leader, is obviously of particular concern. So, Kabru turns all his insight onto Laois and he gets...nothing. Laois cares about money from a pragmatic standpoint, but isn't especially concerned with it. He's easily conned. He's not driven by hatred, greed, or ambition. There's some curiosity there, but it's not the driving curiosity of an obsessive academic, Laois is an enthusiastic hobbyist who has figured out how to make his particular interest into a valuable skillset. Kabru is looking for the protagonist of an epic fantasy tale, and he finds...just a guy. A guy who didn't feel at home anywhere, and found a place and a life where he was welcome and valued. A guy whose skillset and companions puts him first in a race he doesn't even know he's running. And if you're Kabru, that's infuriating and fascinating in equal measure.

the Chicken furthermore tries to convince you to practice sorcery in a fun and fulfilling way
There is a difference between practicing goal-oriented practical sorcery, and placing the entire value of your sorcery on whether or not you achieved the goal. One of these things is soul-crushing.
Practicing sorcery should be it's own reward. The actual steps you are performing should be stuff that you like, or thrills you, or captures your fascination. As an activity, practicing sorcery should be satisfying regardless of whether or not the spellwork manifests properly.
If the sorcery on your plate is not satisfying, compost it and return to the endless buffet and try a different type of sorcery.
If you do not have the things you need, your first step to a spell becomes innovation. What is the purpose of the thing in the spell, and how can it be replaced?
A spell can be cast with a length of string, or a paper and pen. Or with a bit of crayon. Or a dead fly. Or with just you.
Sorcerous knowledge tends to reveal itself when the clutter of correspondences is placed aside, so having few things to practice with is not a curse.
You do not need an interpersonal spiritual friendship with every single spirit you want to work with in magic. YOU DO NOT.
Interpersonal friend relationships with spirits should probably be reserved for very special spirits in your "inner court," the beings with which you choose to share your life and that you honor as teachers and guides.
Many spirits are pleased to assist with magic, but have no interest in getting to know us personally.
Imagine if everyone in your askbox wanted to ask you for help on something you're knowledgeable about, but instead of just asking for help, they first wanted to DM you for a few weeks to make sure you're comfortable with being asked for help, meanwhile on your correspondence chart pinned post it says "I can help with [topic]! Just ask!"
Asking spirits for help in magic is a good, valid way to start building a relationship with them.
Repeatedly calling on the same spirit or type of spirit over and over in spellwork is a fantastic way to deepen your relationship with them.
Working with a spirit in magic does not mean you are obligated to build a shrine to it, venerate it, talk to it outside of spellwork, or any of that.
Practicing sorcery is not the same thing as casting a spell. Practicing sorcery also means practicing the composite skills which come together to make a spell.
A spell is like a completed painting. But to make that painting, the artist needed several skills: the ability to sketch the scene, knowledge of how to apply and work with their paint, color theory, an understanding of how to render landscapes, and so forth. As a sorcerer, your skillset might be imbuing intent, raising energy, centering and grounding, practicing trance, practicing psychism or divination, etc. As you gain familiarity with these things, spells become less like an imposing stranger, and more like someone you're sure you've met before.
Practice can be it's own reward, but discipline is often required for progress.
Raising energy once a day, forever? I think not.
Raising energy once a day for seven days? Or, dedicating to doing it a total of ten times this month? Perhaps so.
An artist may not be in love with every single step of the process, and sometimes a sorcerer may have to get good at a skill that's not their favorite. But if no part of the process sparks joy, then something is wrong.
Sucking at something is the first step to being kind of good at something. Be reasonable with yourself: does the beginner artist doodle a landscape, then look at their work and declare that their art "doesn't work"?
Not every witch is talented at every sort of sorcery. Not creating a potent prosperity spell after five tries doesn't mean you're bad at magic. It might mean that your current understanding of prosperity magic precludes good results, or that you are casting on one very intransigent situation, or that your true talents lie in destruction and chaos instead of peaceful growth.
Set practice goals, give it an honest go, and move on when the time is right: "I am going to practice raising Fire energy and putting it into this stone using the Pore Breathing method. I'm going to do it fifteen times." (3 months later): "That sucked and it never worked, but I did it all fifteen times. Next I'm going to do a grounded roots visualization and use it to channel water energy to cleanse my room." (10 days later): "That was awesome, I want to do it more than 15 times."
Play around and be silly with it. Taking your path seriously is not the same thing as taking your path somberly.
Sports teams practice drills to be ready for game day. Sorcerers are wise to take a page from their book, because when real-life game day arrives, it feels much better to deal with it when you know you've been having pretty good success with channeling water energies, so maybe it's best to do something with that, because you can't move fire for dick.

GUYS CAN WE **PLEASE** TALK ABOUT THIS
DO YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT DAMIAN GAVE TO EACH OF HIS FELLOW BAT SIBLINGS??? Because these are all real established items in DC canon!!
I’m going to work my way back from Dick, because, OMG.
Damian gave Dick the Sword of Sin. If that sounded vaguely familiar to you, you might be an Azrael fan because that is his preferred blade to use. What is so special about this sword??? It’s ability:  The Sword of Sin can be ignited with the mind of the wielder, if the person is powerful enough. The sword has the ability to conjure in the mind of its victims all of the sins for which they are guilty or have not atoned for.       Golly gee, I wonder who this might be super effective against. You know. Giant bat guy with a guilt complex bigger than Texas. You can bet your butt Dick is going to send Bruce through a series of ‘Nam war flashbacks before this series is over. I can absolutely see why Damian would give Dick this weapon here, as he’s known Bruce the longest. I can easily see what part in this story Dick is going to be playing as he clearly has the most directly effective weapon against Batman. Damian’s favoritism here is both sweet and a little cruel if you think about the context much.
Now let’s talk about Stephanie’s weapon, and yes she very much is Damian’s older sibling even if she isn’t a Wayne. Damian gave her the Coup-Stick of Black Bison (A DC Super Villain.) What can this staff do???   The mystical power of the coup-stick can animate material objects and in so doing, command these objects to do its bidding. This power cannot affect living biological material, but can affect non-living organic tissue. Black Bison once used the coup-stick to re-animate the stuffed remains of a white stallion (as well as other animals). Black Bison has also used the coup-stick to control the weather, such as summoning a strong wind to deflect attackers.      Guys Damian gave Stephanie a weapon that will allow her to call on back-up, and COMMAND her own creations, a weapon that allows her to be a leader!! Something she has wanted for a long time??? Also, it sounds like it has the power to control the weather??? Damian really said #girlboss and how much he loves her without actually saying it. I cannot stress enough how well DC could do her justice in this series if they at least tried.
Now, wow. Damian really straight up gave Jason’s dramatic ass the actual Trident of Poseidon, which is an unbreakable weapon that that serves as an extension of the wielder’s own power. Damian really gave Jason not only a King’s weapon, but a godly weapon. What other powers it has might not be relevant to whatever power it might awaken with Jason as its wielder.       Damian really cut out the middle man and just said, “Look, you are stupidly strong. I’m going to give you a stupidly strong weapon. Have at ye!” And you know Jason is going to wield that thing like he’s Poseidon, rightful ruler of the sea. I literally cannot wait to see Jason just absolutely power-housing his way through whatever gets in his way.
Lastly, but not least in the slightest, Damian gave Tim the Cloak of Cagliostro! Which I want to acknowledge right off the bat, 🎶one of these things is not like the others~🎶 And thank Rao for that, because:  The Cloak of Cagliostro is a magical item which allows the wearer to teleport, and to become intangible, and invisible.      That is the *cutest* Easter Egg ever! Gotham Knights acknowledgement of Tim’s teleporting anyone????? Tim was the only one Damian gave a defensive weapon, and not an offensive weapon to. And that makes sense, because Tim is a defensive fighter! Tim never has to be the strongest person in the room. He just needs to be clever enough to use what he knows to win. Instead of giving him a weapon to swing around, Damian gave him something that Tim could use to protect himself, and actively use to make ALL of his skillsets stronger, not just his fighting power!!! This! Is! NOT! Damian looking down on Tim or considering him weaker. He’s playing to Tim’s strengths! He literally gave his big brother a cloak that straight up is like a cheat-code of meta-powers that would suit Tim SO WELL, because he knows Tim will be able to use those abilities to bullshit levels of effectiveness!!
It genuinely looks like thought went into what weapons each of the Robins were given. I know fanon likes to bash on Damian or bash on his relationship to his siblings, or vice-versa, but in canon it has been clear for some time now that Damian considers all former and current Robins his family. (Including Tim. He refers to Tim as Timothy nowadays, and calls him his brother, that’s not fanon) No matter if Damian is not himself right now, he’s genuinely looking out for all of their best interests, and is ensuring that each one of them is as well-equipped as possible.
Regardless, genuinely curious to see how each of these weapons will be used by their respective Robins, and how this will all end up. Hopefully, it ends with a giant group hug that will break the internet. (Also, ngl, I hope if Tim gets a new superhero identity soon his new suit will play off of Gotham Knight’s Tim’s abilities or be based off this cloak. Just think that would be neat ✨)

If anyone was wanting the shapeshifter line-up with my thoughts on who's imagined version is whose. Explanation below for anyone who disagrees lol edit: someone reblogged with canon explanation and boy did I get a lot wrong.
Chilchuk has the weirdest views of everyone. Though Laios being super tall makes sense, his view of Marcille is affected by how he sees elves in general so she has this weird cringey D&D classic look. His version of Senshi has to be the handsome one because we know it's not Marcille's version (shes the only one who doesn't find Senshi handsome) and it's not Laios's because they state in the episode that the Senshi without the helmet indents are Laios's version.
Senshi's imagined version are are soft, babier versions of the real version. His version of Marcille has the worst spellbook because unlike Laios (who does know some magic) Senshi knows nothing about magic and doesn't care to.
Marcille's versions of Chilchuk and Senshi are pretty close actually. Her Laios is easy to spot because all it wants is to eat monsters and it looks stupid. Her Senshi and Chilchuk get outed because she doesn't understand their jobs and skillsets very well (senshi's equipment and chilchuck sitting on the box)
Laios's version are quickly outed by little visual details he tends to over look, not having the indents on Senshi's helmet and Chilchuk having a scarf. Similarly, Marcille doesn't have her hair braided but what gets her outed was the real Marcille's lack of awareness. I really like how this shows Laios doesn't notice a lot of physical attributes of people but understands a lot about how people work.
I really love this part of Dungeon Meshi and how you get to see how they view each other and how that affects their interactions.

PAC: What your co-workers think about you
Just a little reading if you're curious. I've been curious. Just don't go too deep, you're there to further yourself and earn the moolah after all.
Please choose from left to right, 1 - 2 - 3.
Tumblr media
1 is fortune, 2 is a shell, 3 is bell.
Hope you enjoy and don't take it too serious.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
GROUP 1
Your fortune cookie paper says You will be fortunate in everything you put your hands to.
Tumblr media
2 of wands - The Magician (rev) - The high priestess - The wheel reversed - transmutation and cheer-fullness.
Ok so 2 of wands is a nice starter card for impressions. As a colleague this can show a skillset that includes good foresight, and planning. Starting off I could assume you’re seen as someone who likes to plan and is more organised than others. This is collaborative energy. I feel like maybe you’re taken on better by masculine people in the workplace. I get the idea people have been relieved last minute that oh, yeah, pile one actually prepared for x y or z, that’s lucky.
The magician reversed in this tarot deck always makes me think of someone who is more tricky with their words. This can be great in some situations, for example if you’re trying to sell something. You can navigate conversations for a set goal. However, in a more negative light this might mean that some coworkers could think you’re on the manipulative side in your interactions with them. Some may worry they can’t trust you. Whether this is valid or not is up to you. Sometimes we do say little things that maybe we know we shouldn’t, for example, saying something in passing about another coworker. Sometimes we gossip.
The high priestess as how you’re seen professionally makes me think you seem to have a magic touch. It’s like if a computer isn’t working, but you try and work it and all of a sudden it’s fine. I think maybe sometimes you can make someone feel silly because all of a sudden there’s no problem lol.
Wheel of fortune makes me think of timing, and after high priestess it makes me think they aren’t sure what you do when they don’t see you. It could be a curiosity about your personal life, maybe you don’t divulge very much about how you spend you time. It could be that you seem to have this magic touch or always be prepared, but it’s out of nowhere or they don’t understand how you got skilled somehow, because they haven’t seen you spend time on learning more for example. It could be like, well, how do you know that when our manager hasn’t taught us x y z. So you could be secretly self taught or seen as having a natural talent.
Cheerfulness: “I embrace a state of cheerfulness, even on days when I don’t wake up feeling that way. Knowing that moods are contagious, I’d rather not cause an outbreak of crankiness and complaints. Instead, I’ll strive to be the patient zero of joy amd laughter.”
Transmutation: “I have the ability to transmute negative feelings into positive ones, and I exercise it at will. The next time someone frustrates me/annoys me/eats tuna too close to me, I will lean towards kindness and acceptance rather than stabbyness and loathing.”
Put all together, I think your coworkers generally get along with you, especially those who identify as male. I think some wonder how you manage some things, because you are capable. All of a sudden you just seem to pull something when they need it, like magic. Like in a show: here’s one I prepared earlier. Lol.
The career affirmation cards together tell me you try your best to be pleasant and not be negative about everything all the time. (there are people out there who are true negative nancy’s and it really does make everything a drag) So I think your coworkers appreciate that you try and turn the mood around. Also, there might be a coworker that is negative or gossip-y that might have been trying to drag you into conversations to strengthen their narrative, or to join in. Don’t let people bring you in. But yeah, overall good energy, nothing nasty really.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
GROUP 2
Tumblr media
Consideration - 9 of cups - 8 of coins -  Queen of swords reversed - 3 of wands
Consideration: “I’m a considerate person, and my new goal is radical conscientiousness. From now on, I’ll leave every space tidier than I found it; I’ll find small ways to support a team mate even if they didn’t ask for it; I will eat leftover pumpernickel bagels even though I didn’t order it.”
We have a sweetheart hereeeee. Hahaha, With a secret cutting tongue. You can make the occasional comment and I find it funny. You might have been interpreted as judgemental of someone else's work, you might not have found something up to standard. You could be seen as very clean or tidy.
Your coworkers overall see you as a really well meaning, well intentioned colleague. You’re definitely there to achieve the goals of the team or business. You mean it when you go into work, you go in there and you don’t intend to mess about or slack.
With queen of swords rev though, it does make me think someone in your workplace views you as mean, and I feel like this could be more of a misunderstanding. Because most of your coworkers here see you as considerate, helpful, wanting the best, not particularly nasty.
8 of coins signifies being seen as a hard worker, honing whatever your job skillset is. So you always are practicing becoming better. Not someone who sits on their laurels and assumes they’re set. It could also mean you’re seen as someone more advanced by most. So more experienced or knowledgable.
It’s really weird, I’m getting two meanings for queen of swords reversed and 3 of wands… Both may apply, or just one. The first one is that you may have a silver tongued coworker who tries to downplay your experience or make you appear less skilled. So instead of the experienced worker you are, they try to make you look like you still have more to learn. The language may be about the ability to plan. The other meaning is that you might make newer people feel like you are unapproachable for whatever reason. You might intimidate newer people. They may take time to understand your real intentions (being helpful and part of a team)
9 of cups makes me think that goals are what you’re focussed on. You appear that you have endgame in sight, you’re there to accomplish something and you’re not letting things get in your way. If you need to finish that project or task, you’re not wasting your time chatting.
That’s what I see right now, hope you enjoyed.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
GROUP 3
Tumblr media
Justice - 9 of coins - 2 of cups - ace of cups reversed - risks
A fair and pleasant person who can get along with most. Even if you’re introverted, your interactions leave a good impression.
I’ll get a first impression out of the way. Did someone here take a risk and date/see someone in the workplace? People will be noticing/talking about that.
Or something may have gone wrong with a friendship with a colleague or what was a nice work connection and you may have withdrawn.
Those are just 2 possibilities.
It’s a really weird energy all together to read for me, because…Oh, there are big differing views. That must be why. I think of the groups, this is the least streamlined. One or more may think you’re too impulsive or risky, but some might actually think you take positive and calculated risks. It’s like maybe there’s quite a mish mash of characters that see things very differently. Maybe you work with different people on different days, or go around for clients.
More traditional thinkers might think your ambition goes too far, and why are you not happy with what you have. More adventurous people might think you go, do the thing.
I see the perspective that you kind of shrug your shoulders, so you don’t seem to care as much about things as they do. Like you’re more confident or happy on your own, to do your own thing, to pitch that new idea, you don’t care, you’ll do it. It’s a risk you’d be willing to take.
You may not feel confident, but honestly I think you look confident. 9 of coins with justice just gives me nonchalant energy where you seem to feel secure and know things will work out.
This combination tells me you wouldn’t mind moving workplaces, this could be a stepping stone for you, or you could know if need be you can jump ship.
Risks says “I take big risks and leap into the unknown with fearless abandon, knowing that the best surprises and richest experiences come from bold choices.”
So maybe this is something pretty new to you, or you’re bringing new ideas to how things can be done.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Hope you enjoyed, byeeee

So, I been curious and I wonder if you have answers; how strong is Idia? I know physically that a new born kitten could woop him, while technology wise not even the master control could stand against him, but what about magic wise? And where does he stand in comparison to the other dorm heads? I know in ch 6 he was strong as heck but isn't that mainly because he was getting energy from the blots?
(Thank you for your time)
Tumblr media
Mmm, well... I don't think "magic strength" alone accounts for how good of a mage someone is. You could have all the power in the world but could be a terrible mage just because of how you use it (like if you lack control), or perhaps because you can only cast a few powerful spells before you blow through your energy reserves. All spells are also not made equal; there are defensive spells, offensive spells, healing spells, and more! Because of all that, it's hard for us to really quantify how "strong" a mage is, because really each mage seems to specialize in their own skillsets. It's not "which class is the strongest?" but rather "which class fits your preferred play style?" For this reason, I'm not going to be formally ranking the dorm leaders but instead will point out their strengths and weaknesses.
As Idia points out in book 6:
Riddle has an artificially large magic pool because he started his magical training from a young age. He is capable of casting strong spells and favors offense, but also has low physical stamina and tires easily (from blot accumulation) because he tries to brute-force. His mental state is also said to be heavily impacted by external factors.
Leona can cast spells quickly and effortlessly; his magic pool is described to be "huge", but we don't know how this really relates to the other problem children in terms of scale. He also seems to boast precision, as he can "tailor" his defensive spells' strength to counter his opponents. Because of how efficient Leona is, he barely accumulates unnecessary blot. Stress does not have much effect on how fast he produces blot, but intense emotions do cause a significant spike in him. Additionally, Leona is skilled in flight due to playing magift/spelldrive.
Azul is a relatively slow spellcaster but makes up for that with precision and access to a variety of spells. He watches the flow of a battle, keeps cool, and then plays support/heals as needed. Idia also notes that while Azul can cast many different spells, Azul also does not have a large enough magic pool to support them and so has to be more careful about what and when he uses his magic.
Vil is very stable across the board and is quite resilient to blot. Stress does not have a huge effect on him, but the blot does seem to stick around for longer because of his larger magic pool. Something else to keep in mind is that Vil excels in making potions, which is another form of magic.
Please keep in mind that these refer to mainly COMBAT scenarios, which are not the only cases in which you would use magic... so this isn't an entirely accurate assessment; it's just the most convenient assessment since the game blatantly lays the comparisons out for us. Let's now piece together what we know of the remaining dorm leaders based on lore we have:
Kalim does not strike me as someone who has a particularly large pool of magic (it's never commented on, nor shown). I'd place him at around normal until otherwise refuted by the canon. We know he's not particularly proficient in his studies, as he just barely scrapes by in classes with intense help from Jamil. This may not always translate to poor performance in practical settings, but we also have no standout moments of Kalim pulling off impressive spells or being a notable mage. He also doesn't seem to be aware of the practical or strategic uses for his own UM unless others in his immediate vicinity are in need of large amounts of water. It's possible that he's incredibly powerful, but lacks awareness of how to best utilize his magic.
Malleus is stated in the lore to be one of the top 5 mages in the WORLD. He uses magic on a daily basis and barely blinks an eye to when he does amazing feats like STOPPING TIME ITSELF. Book 7 also reveals to us a hypothesis that fae might have access to an essentially limitless reserve of magic because they pull that magic from nature itself. I'd say that this definitively places Malleus at the top of the "magical power" hierarchy--there was never any doubt about that, the problem just comes in trying to sort everyone else under him.
And then there's Idia, whom we don't really see performing magic much by himself. No, he prefers to tinker with his computer parts which, technically, can count as magic since technomancy is the combination of technology and magic. (Does Ortho count as something resulting from Idia's "magic power"??) It's hard to say.
If I had to guess, I would think Idia is another stable user like Vil but is also highly volatile like Riddle (due to his guilt and grief being the main source of trauma). Idia HAS to cast spells or input magic into his devices because of his curse; if he does not accumulate blot, there's nothing for his curse to dine on... so it'll dine on his own magic instead, which can be detrimental to his health and wellbeing. (This is why the Shrouds are perfect candidates to work at STYX and research blot. All the blot present in STYX HQ fuels them and feeds their curses.) This implies Idia has to have output, and consistent output at that. More blot present in the immediate area may be able to power him up more and allow him to cast more spells/cast spells more frequently, but that's again highly dependent on his environment. Idia has the "flexibility" that the other dorm leaders lack, which can be a curse or a blessing given the scenario. Make of that what you will!

something i've always loved about dungeon meshi that i can talk about now since it finally happened in the anime is like, the way everyone especially Marcille is shown adapting their skillsets to the circumstances of their unusual dungeon crawl. we get lots of clever problem solving spotlight moments with things like Senshi and Chillchuck collaborating to use flame traps to cook, and Laios' monster knowledge helps them defeat plenty of monsters and discover things like the living armor mollusks. Marcille gets some moments like this too for sure, especially with things like drinking the undine. she's clearly competent and an important member of the party, but her destruction focused magic doesnt have the same utility that can shine yet. there's only so much she can adapt to as a mage, and without the usual dungeoneering resources, she's out of her element.
and then we find out that's because her element is ancient forbidden elf war criminal magic

Hi, thanks for the awesome comic! I'm curious about two things: 1) Dainix mentioned having a teacher. What were they like? They seem like they had at least one good bit of advice, so cool person, maybe? 2) What was Dainix's training for Ravvan duty like?
Dainix started his combat training fairly young as a healthy outlet for some frustrations and difficulties he was having with his peers - when everyone but you has developed fire magic already, it's not easy being the odd kid out, and it's easy to start seeing enemies everywhere. His teacher taught him independently at first and helped him focus on directing those frustrations in healthy ways instead of engaging in any sort of direct retaliation or lashing out at random, and he was very driven to improve. It was never entirely painless, but when he decided to pursue the Ravvan training, its focus beyond the individual's skillset stressed teamwork and communication, and most of the rough edges got sanded off with time and practice - and it didn't hurt that Dainix was one of the most skilled hand-to-hand fighters and tactical thinkers in the group, and even the people who'd given him a hard time in earlier years grew very comfortable relying on him to have their back when it counted, just as he relied on them when he needed someone to do the one thing he couldn't. As he settled into his identity, he became a lot less angry and much more comfortable with himself and where he stood with his peers - though his teacher thought he never quite lost that need to prove himself, to make things just a little more difficult for himself just to prove to himself he could handle it.

DUNGEON MESHI EPISODE 23 THOUGHTS
The first half of the episode was so sweet, I had been awaiting this one with such excitement and boy did they deliver.
Tumblr media
Like. Look at them! They're a family, your honor! They're so ready to be there for Senshi through thick and thin, and accept him back into the party once he offers to stay.
It's also really interesting to see that it was only because of Laios that this was possible. No one else but our local monsterloving guy could possibly have managed to do this, and I'm sure this foreshadows that only him and his party are worthy of conquering the dungeon and it's trickery, somehow.
(also, as a viewer, it's super fucking sweet when your special interest manages to solve someone's life horrors isn't it? unspeakably helpful after a lifetime of shunning)
Tumblr media
This is literally puckpatti chils. I NEED to know their internal monologue about this - does chilchuck think of his daughters so deep below the surface? did marcille feel the change in aging rate for just a moment - would she want to stay this way purely because of it? or perhaps have the others stay as long lived races. Much to think about!
Tumblr media
cock check chilchuck be like "maybe like this my wife wouldn't have left me"
ft. marcille having a crisis and senshi being the model he always wanted to be.
Tumblr media
"do you have games on your phone mr. chilchuck"
Tumblr media
Look at them. They look like they could be just another party in the dungeon.
Tumblr media
Senshi suddenly unlocks forbidden elf abilities that even marcille didn't know about.
Jokes aside, it's really interesting to see everyone adapting to their new skillset and gaining this newfound appreciation for their friends. Only two things are a shame here - one, we were robbed of slutty sandal senshi. two, marcille is still across the pit.
Tumblr media
(Chil. You can't just throw a child across a pit. This is why your wife left you)
HOW ABOUT YOU THANK KENSUKE INSTEAD OF THE UNKNOWABLE MAGIC. KENSUKE WAS THE ONE WHO DID THIS.
Tumblr media
Laios you didn't just throw Toshiro's fruity little friendship bracelet - I mean, emergency bell. You yeeted that thang like your life depended on it. Do you realize Toshiro's now going to be running after you. Do you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah. My favorite. Paw fur dumplings
But don't worry, help is here! This bitch empty, YEET
(ryoko kui saying dumplings are the best thing ever to exist and then bashing elf cake to the ground is so funny to me. I respect someone willing to write their food preferences into their works)

Hello students!
Tumblr media
It looks like the bunch of you are eager to learn how to make potions! Potion making is very rewarding and fun. I cannot wait to expand your knowledge of alchemy. However, I come to you with something different. Today we are going to learn a little bit more about the types of wizards, Soil, Scab, Rust, Crystal, and Parchment!
There are two categories of magic, which are Wild and Controlled. Wild magic is the basic magic all wizards know. It's uncontrollable, imprecise, and sometimes dangerous. However, when a wizard finds the right magic item, that magic becomes controlled and more easy to use. Here are some examples.
Tumblr media
Soil Wizards are those who can commune with the dead. However, when Wild, it makes the communing part difficult for them. Some Soil Wizards may find communication to be tricky via sight, hearing, or speech with a spirit. However, when using a magic item made specifically for them, they will find communication to be a lot easier! :)
Tumblr media
Next up we have a Scab Wizard! Scab Wizards are those who can either speed up the process of an injury or progress it. They make for excellent healers but scary adversaries in battle. When using wild magic, a Scab Wizard could have difficulty with precision. However, when given a magic item that channels their magic they could make better decisions with more confidence! :D
Tumblr media
Next up we have Rust Wizards. Rust Wizards are mages of the elements. They can be of fire, earth, water, or air depending on their star sign. Today we will use Fire mages as an example. This Rusts fire magic is too uncontrollable and powerful for a Wizard to effectively use. But finding a correct item will make it far easier for them to channel their powers into better uses! >:D
Tumblr media
Now with Crystal Wizards! Crystal Wizards can sometimes have a hard time distinguishing their own magic from reality. Visions created by them out of fear or dreams could be projected uncontrollably and make for scary encounters. Give that Wizard the proper tools and they gain more control over what they can make! :O
Tumblr media
Finally we have Parchment Wizards! Parchment Wizards have no magic, technically. They cannot cast, but they can imbue items with magic and make magic items for other wizards to use! Magic does not run through them, but they have a talent with weaving it to their will for the benefit of others. Some Parchment Wizards are even talented enough to make scrolls to hold spells cast by other Wizards to use for their own sake. However, they would need to train very hard and have access to other kinds of wizards to cast those spells into the scrolls to hold them.
Tumblr media
Magic focuses or items can come in any form. It's up to the wizard what they find easiest to use depending on their skillset and preferences. Hopefully you can find a Parchment Wizard up to the task for your vision! If not, there are always second hand stores that you can search through!
Tumblr media
Well, I fear that is all I have to teach you today. My asks and messages are always open if you have any questions! Have a wonderful day, pupils. Until next time! :)
