I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but if you’ve bought the passes to see the WFA episodes that haven’t come out yet, congratulations. But for the love of god, PLEASE PUT A SPOILER ALERT. And not some shitty one in small letters. A proper one that blocks most of the content and gives people enough time to scroll without being spoiled.
Be considerate.

The Nadir of New York Sports
As if anyone needs reminding, New York (city and state) is mired in its worst sports drought in a century. As of right now, including the wins in the past 30 hours by the Nuggets and Golden Knights, 46 total NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB titles have been awarded since the last secured by a New York team (the 2012 Giants). Across the eight NYC teams that's 92 failed seasons. Throw in Buffalo's two teams and you're up to 115. Add in the Devils and that's 127 disappointments. Given that New York and New Jersey account for 11 pro teams, you have to marvel at such breathtaking bad luck, incompetence and the Astros being a bunch of fucking cheaters. Just to rub some salt in the wound here (and because I counted), here's a list of the cities (# of pro teams in parentheses) that have won titles since the Giants hoisted the Super Bowl XLVI trophy. Bay Area (3 teams) = 6 titles LA (6) = 5 Boston/NE (4) = 5 Denver (4) = 3 Chicago (5) = 3 Tampa Bay (3) = 3 KC (2) = 3 -- only multi-team city where all teams won Pittsburgh (3) = 2 DC (4) = 2 Houston (3) = 2 Miami (4) = 2 Seattle (3) = 1 Atlanta (3) = 1 Baltimore (2) = 1 Philly (4) = 1 Cleveland (3) = 1 San Antonio (1) = 1 Toronto (3) = 1 St. Louis (2) = 1 Vegas (2) = 1 Milwaukee (2) = 1 For a little more granularity, here are the winningest states CA = 11 titles FL = 5 MA = 5 MO = 4 TX = 3 PA = 3 CO = 3 Ill = 3 DC metro = 3 Some of these burn a little more than others, of course. I'm happy for Chicago and Cleveland, two of the toughest sports towns anywhere. It was especially awesome seeing the Cubs win. But WTF Tampa Bay!?! Three traditionally crap teams that all take over their sports at the same time? And Boston? New York hasn't won Stanley Cup since 1994 nor an NBA trophy since 1972. Meanwhile between June 2008 and February 2015 Boston wins a title in all four leagues (with only one team in each sport). Also fuck the Astros.

Imus in the Morning, 66 WNBC New York: The Early Days | 1972
Imus in the Morning, 66 WNBC New York: The Early Days | 1972
Don Imus at 66 WNBC New York AUDIO ONLY – Listen Below. Courtesy of longtime contributor Steven Green, this goes way back to just about the beginning of the Imus in the Morning program on WNBC. This is a fascinating aircheck from the standpoint that Imus was using much different sound effects, and doing much of his schtick live, as opposed to a lot of produced bits. His recognizable “quack…

Janis Joplin and Peter Tork in the audience at Monterey Pop Festival, June 1967. Photos by Jim Marshall (?).
“On my birthday we were in L.A. playing a club & everyone was so nice! The owners of the club sent me 3 dozen red roses — all over the stage when I came in, the band gave me 2 doz. […] Peter Tork sent me 1 doz. red roses. And after the show we had lots of champagne & a birthday cake. Really nice.” - From a 1968 letter sent by Janis Joplin to her family, via Genesis Publications
“‘My favorite guest star [on The Monkees TV show] was the one that was never on the show,’ Tork said. ‘I always wanted Janis Joplin,’ [Tork] said.” - The Defender, February 21, 1996 (x)
“At a gig in Los Angeles Janis picked up a busboy, a young Peter Tork, at the Golden Bear club, and it took a bit of convincing, but Tork, who later became one of the Monkees, told me about their off-and-on relationship. ‘Janis made no particular point of displaying her intelligence,’ he said, ‘but this came up and she couldn’t help setting me straight. She had her bottle of Southern Comfort right there, and I told her she would get “sclerosis” of the liver. She corrected me on my usage of the word, “No, it’s cirrhosis of the liver.”’ Peter laughed. ‘In those days acts were booked for a week, and there we were! For a while every time I saw Janis, she was happy to see me, hugged me, gave me that great big old laugh, and the next thing I knew we were rolling in the hay together. Then one day I caught up with her at a Who concert and she wasn’t friendly to me at all, and I said, “Okay, I get it, she’s after one of these other guys!” That was that.’” - Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon by Pamela Des Barres (1996)
“She was wonderful to know and to hang out with, and of course it was wonderful to enjoy her fabulous talent.” - Peter Tork, askpetertork dot com, July 2010
“Janis should have been knocking ‘em down into her sixties.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters radio, September 1989
Peter Tork: “Actually, Janis and I knew each other before we both broke, before either of us broke. I was a bar — I was a busboy and a beer jerk at a pub called the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California. I had just gone to California. And Janis was in Big Brother and the Holding Company, and they were a pretty well-known San Francisco band, but Janis hadn’t broken as big as she became later. And they came through, and Janis and I just fell to talking. We had a lot in common, I mean, there was something in common, I — spoke to her about her drinking, I said, ‘You might get sclerosis,’ she said, ‘Cirrhocis!’ I got corrected. I didn’t mind being corrected. and, you know... And, and we just became —” Q: “You bonded. You had a connection there.” PT: “Pretty close. [...] We lost contact. Then, a couple of years later, The Monkees were already rolling, I’m watching 2001: Space Odyssey [released on April 2, 1968]. And Janis is in the audience, too, and she, ‘Hey! How ya doing?’ She’s so raucous, you know, ‘Hey, how ya doing, honey?’ She was fabulous. And so we hung —
”
Q: “And that was the night?
“ PT: “No, it was back and forth, because then we would… What happened was, Big Brother was playing New York, and I was in New York, as I recall, and so, you know, I called her up and said, ‘I’m around.’ So she came up and hung out. And I knew, of course, the band and I are pretty good friends, David Getz the drummer’s a good friend of mind to this day, and Sam Andrew, and James —” Q: “So you’re in New York, Big Brother’s playing, and you see Joplin —” PT: “And we go there, and, yeah, I… Janis, you know, retires, ‘I’ll be there in a minute,’ and I walked in, we had some conversation and…” Q: “You laid the lumber. Lucky you. You’re something special.” PT: “I am.” Q: “Only one time?” PT: “Twice.”
Q: “Twice?” PT: “Yeah.” Q: “She came back for more.” PT: “Or I did!” (laughter) Q: “Yeah, she was bored, second time she… I think it would be very tough to please a Janis Joplin sexually.” PT: “Uh, well, I couldn’t tell you. She was — hey, a second time is a testimonial, right?” - WFAN-FM, November 24, 2009

I don't follow sports really, but I'm also from NY and was wondering if it was family thing or a move to NY thing!
Cool fellow NYer! Love to meet y’all! I grew up here so definitely not a move to NY thing lol but the Islanders at least is a family thing. My parents grew up in NY too and my dad was in middle school during the Cup Run in the 80s and fell in love with the team and hockey. I grew up going to games with him and my siblings at the old Coliseum and then eventually Barclays and now UBS!

quick rant: mlb's streaming model encourages sailing the seven seas
context: I (TK) live in Yankees broadcast territory. I want to watch yankee games.
problems include:
mlb is a dickhead: living in a state which is blocked out from all my local teams is bad enough. all of them are 2 hour drives. it wouldn't be so bad if the traffic wasn't so goddamned horrible to drive through. what the hell. the dbacks and the padres have single team packages for in market games for 20 a month. I would totally get it If the Yankees had that! the mlb tv interface is nicer ... the only solution they have is "listen to the game," which if I wanted to do that I could just go to wfan. at this point, dude...
YES Network sucks: I can't sign up on my TV. yes, I'm complaining about it. the interface just doesn't like to load and freaks out and crashes out every time I try to purchase on a mobile device. and, on my chromecast / desktop, it says I don't live in the yankees market, but according to MLB's blackout market, I DO! so make up your mind!!! And before you say, "Just get cabe" one cable plan which has YES Network costs 240 a month. I dont make enough money to pay that.
Prime video solves half my problems: listen catching those Yankees games are fire but come on?? fuck RSNs, I'm not paying for cable.
