"Now and For Always" - Lines & Lyrics in the LotR Musical
Tumblr media
"Now and For Always", Sam and Frodo's beautiful duet, is one of the most popular & touching songs in the show. The two of them reminisce about evenings spent around the fire back home in the Shire, the nature of Hobbits, and their deep friendship and love for each other.
Stories we tell will cast their spell
Now and for always
These lyrics take on an even deeper meaning now that Peter Howe, who originated the role of Sam in Toronto and London, passed away last month. May he rest in peace.
Lines and lyrics as performed in the West End version below the cut; it's a little different from the Toronto version in this clip.
This is my own transcript of the scene, not the official script.
A deserted place close to Mordor. FRODO, SAM and GOLLUM climb into view. The Hobbits are wearing their Elven cloaks. FRODO is more weary than before. GOLLUM points.
GOLLUM: There! There it is. Mount Doom.
SAM: Look at it, the way it lights up the sky - it reminds me of one of Mr Gandalf’s fireworks. Do you miss him?
FRODO: I miss his bushy eyebrows and his quick temper. And his voice. How far away are we, Sam?
SAM: Three days. Maybe four if we get all the cover we can.
FRODO: So close.
SAM: (sitting down and unpacking his bag) Come on. Let’s eat something to keep our spirits up.
GOLLUM turns to the Hobbits and signals for them to follow him.
GOLLUM: Keep moving. Come. Come!
SAM: (to FRODO) No, no.
GOLLUM: (angry) Come!
SAM: (to GOLLUM) Wait! (to FRODO) You’re going to eat something, Frodo Baggins, before we take another step.
GOLLUM freezes and turns, hit by a sudden realisation.
GOLLUM: …Baggins? No no, not Baggins!
SAM: And then we’ll walk South to those… doomy fires, whatever they’re called so we’ll have this over with and get back to the Shire and how things used to be before we ever heard of magic rings and the like… (spotting something in his bag) Here, look. (he gets up and approaches FRODO) Lady Galadriel gave me this. It’s a box of earth from her orchard. She said it might reward us when we get home.
FRODO: I don’t know if things will ever be how they used to be, Sam. It’s something Lady Galadriel said in Lothlórien, and something she wouldn’t tell me. But I’ve worked it out. Remember when we left the Shire? We met those Elves heading West.
SAM: How could I forget?
FRODO: They were leaving, Sam. Soon they all will. If Sauron gets the One Ring again -
SAM: He won’t. We’re going to make sure he doesn’t.
FRODO: Whether we do or not, the Elves will still leave. Gandalf said it. If the One Ring goes, then all rings lose their power. You see, Lady Galadriel’s ring is what protects Lothlórien, it protects their home. Without it, there will be no more Elves, no more magic - anywhere.
SAM: No more Elves? That’ll change everything.
SAM returns to his bag and sits.
SAM: You know the stories in the old songs and tales, the ones we used to sing around the big fire at the Ivy Bush. Who knows? People went on journeys and they had big adventures, but nothing ever really seemed to change/changed, did it? Not like this. You know, the trouble is, we Hobbits only really like stories that end up just the way they started, don’t we?
SAM: Sing me a story of heroes of the Shire,
Muddling through,
Brave and true.
Stubborn as bindweed and tough as old briar,
Never too showy or grand.
Year after year
They persevere
Now and for always.
FRODO takes off his hood and settles down beside SAM.
Harfoots who planted and Stoor folk who ploughed,
Bred to endure,
Slow but sure.
Fallohide blood in your veins makes you proud,
Sturdy and steady they stand.
True to their aim
To stay the same
Now and for always.
BOTH: Sit by the firelight’s glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell us of adventures strange and rare –
Never to change
Ever to share
Stories we tell will cast their spell
Now and for always.
FRODO: You know, I used to think the great adventures in the old songs and tales were things special folk went out looking for. But they weren’t, were they? They were just things they got landed in.
SAM: I wonder what kind of story we’ve landed in.
Sing me the story of Frodo and the Ring.
Fearless and bold.
FRODO: (laughing) Tired and cold.
SAM: Sword at his side, an Elf-blade called Sting,
Crossing a mis’rable land.
Wouldn’t retreat
Just followed his feet
Now and for always.
BOTH: Sit by the firelight’s glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare –
Never to change
Ever to share
Stories we tell will cast their spell
Now and for always.
SAM: I wish Gollum was in a tale, eh?
FRODO: He might be good in a tale.
SAM: Better than he is in real life, anyway. A good deal less smelly. (laughs)
FRODO: Oh, for a piece of Mrs Bracegirdle’s plumcake.
SAM: Mrs Bracegirdle.
They share a laugh.
FRODO: They’re all so far away. (after a moment) It’s not me they’ll remember, you know? (getting no response) Sam?
SAM has fallen asleep.
FRODO: Sing me the tale of the bravest of them all.
Comrade and guide
At my side.
Stout-hearted Sam who wouldn’t let me fall,
Holding my life in his hand.
True to the end,
No finer friend.
Now and for always.
Sit by the firelight’s glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare
Never to change
Ever to share
Stories we tell will cast their spell
Now and for –
FRODO, too, falls asleep.
GOLLUM: - always.

-Recording begins-
Spider-Man: Hi folks! I’d like to give a PSA to my usual villains, and anyone else with ideas for the next two months.
Spider-Man: *holds up a brick sized lump of metal* See this? It’s titanium!
Spider-Man: *starts flattening it out and shaping it*
Spider-Man: See, we all know that I’m crazy strong, but I never wanna really hurt anybody right? Right. While that hasn’t changed, something very important does right around this time of year.
Spider-Man: *pulls off a glove and pulls a chunk into a long stem with his nails carving lines for added texture*
Spider-Man: See, this is what we like to call exam season. Anybody who knows anything about college can tell you that it drives people up the wall, and I already climb mine when I’m antsy.
Spider-Man: *starts winding the thin sheet around the stem, delicately crimping petals in place*
Spider-Man: I do wanna be clear that this isn’t a threat, okay? I’m still not interested in crossing the line, which brings me to my point.
Spider-Man: *throws the titanium rose at the brick wall behind him, stem first, and embeds it all the way through*
Spider-Man: /That/ was restrained because I could focus enough to have full control. If I’m extremely tired or otherwise distracted, there’s just as much risk of me slipping up as someone operating heavy machinery. I’m probably not going to remember what sleep is for two whole months, so remember!
Spider-Man: *pulls out a brick and snaps it like a cookie*
Peter fucking Parker: Don’t.

I am such a slut for Danny having supernatural strength and being able to kill someone with a single slap because he’s used to fighting ghosts who are built Sturdy (and literally can’t die, that is very helpful in a sparing partner) so he has to learn such meticulous control when he moves to Gotham where he starts regularly getting into scuffles with humans who think he’s an easy target (he looks like he has the sturdiness of a wet newspaper) and the whole time he’s more stressed about not drawing the Bats attention by being too good or accidentally killing someone so he has to walk that fine line of acting like a scrawny loser and dipping out at his first chance without being clocked as a meta.
Danny, laying on the ground and getting kicked repeatedly by a thug: *tries to angle himself so the guy can kick out a knot in his back*
Danny: *deadpan* oh, ow, stop that hurts, oof
Robin, watching from the rooftop and recognizing the dramatics from the Supers: father there is a meta
Batman, also watching and having flashbacks to Clark’s earlier days: *so so tired and already mentally getting the adoption paperwork ready*

Audio
“Now and For Always (Reprise)” - Peter Howe (Sam Gamgee) and Kristin Galer (Rosie Cotton) - 12 March 2006, Toronto
The Toronto production of the LotR Musical closed 16 years ago today (3 September 2006), so I figured it was time for more feels. This reprise is sung by Sam after he decides to abandon Frodo (who he believes to be mortally wounded by Shelob) and continue the quest to destroy the Ring on his own. As he journeys onwards into Mordor, he desperately clings to his memories of the Shire and his beloved Rosie. It’s slightly different from the West End preview version.
Careful when listening to the audio; the white noise is very bad. Transcript & lyrics below the cut.
This is my own transcript of the scene, not an official script. The recording isn’t mine, either.
Sams sings quietly to himself, a lonely wanderer in a strange land. He is wearing Sting and has the Ring around his neck.
SAM:
Sing me a story of the heroes of the Shire
Muddling through
Brave and true
Stubborn as bindweed and tough as old brier
As he sings, he thinks of ROSIE. She can be seen from afar and eventually joins his singing.
SAM/ROSIE:
Never too showy or grand
Year after year they persevere
Now and for always.
ROSIE continues to sing under SAM’s speech.
SAM: What I’d give to see Hobbiton again, and the Gaffer and… my Rosie.  I can’t think Gandalf would’ve sent us on this errand if there’d been no hope of our ever coming back. Don’t you worry, Mr Frodo. I’ll take the Ring to Mount Doom, just the same as if you were here beside me.
His hand closes on the Ring around his neck.
I’ve thought about putting it on, don’t you think I haven’t. Samwise the Strong, striding this bitter land with my sword flaming. I’d soon have this place filled with fruit and trees and flowers. But it’s no good, Mr Frodo. That’s not the way for me.
ROSIE:
Sing me a story of the heroes of the Shire
Muddling through
Brave and true
Stubborn as bindweed and tough as old brier
Never too showy or grand
Year after year they persevere
Now and for always.
Sit by the firelight’s glow.
Tell us an old tale we know.
Tell of adventures strange and rare
Never to change
Ever to share
Stories we tell will cast their spell
Now and for always.

i see this jason todd who actually looks his very young age (instead of the 30yr old man that comics like to portray)
Tumblr media
and feel my heart breaking just imagining bruce beating him up, almost killing him, mind-breaking him, and just overall being a total piece of shit father towards him.
a huge chunk of the reason why people don't view bruce's actions towards jason as abusive or wrong is because jason doesn't look his age. he's drawn to be this 35yr old father of three who looks even older than dick (and way too on par with bruce) that people see their fights as one between batman and any of his regular rogues. when they fight, it just looks like batman is fighting a man his age and not an actual young person. it doesn't look like batman is fighting his son who's barely even drinking age (and who def wasn't drinking age in utrh). their fights are portrayed in a way that eliminates the very real power struggle between them.
this applies to jason's entire character as well. a lot of people don't sympathize with how he died or his actions as robin or his fights with the other bats because he doesn't look his age. he always looks older and scarier than everyone else. tim has many sympathizers from the titans tower incident because jason just looked like a grown man fighting a 12yr old (even tho i disagree, tim was built and like 17 lmfao).
anyways, i just wish comics would actually draw jason to look his age, which literally ranges from 19 to early twenties. he's young- so young, and it's so annoying to see him drawn and written as someone older than even bruce.

Ok we all talk about the Pevensies' trauma at returning to Earth at the end of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and their trouble readjusting to life there again but think of all the funny/good parts too
They return from the country, and their mom is surprised when all her children hug her at the station. Even Peter, who thinks he's all grown up. Even Edmund, who went away surly and withdrawn. She doesn't know her children haven't seen her in over a decade.
They miss their dear Cair Paravel, but they absolutely do not miss its chamber pots. Indoor plumbing is amazing.
It takes a while to remember how modern technology works, though. How many heart attacks did the siblings give their parents or the professor because they walked into a dark room only to turn on the light and find the children sitting there in the dark. (They were by the window! There was still plenty of light from the sunset! They would have gotten a candle in a minute!) The kids sheepishly remember oh yeah electricity is a thing.
(Edmund has a new electric torch in Prince Caspian. He was so excited to get that torch. Almost more excited than you'd think a kid his age would be, and his parents expect Peter at least to tease him, but the siblings all agree light in your hand at the touch of a switch is terrific.)
Suddenly getting really high grades in some subjects and terrible in others. Their grammar, reading comprehension, spelling, vocab, even penmanship? Amazing. History and geography? They don't remember anything. One time in class Susan forgets Earth is round and wants to die.
Also they can never remember what the date is supposed to be because Narnia uses different months and years. They can estimate time really well by looking at the sun though, and Edmund at least can always tell which way is north etc without thinking about it (again, using the sun)
Okay but how many times did they go to pick something up or reach something and realize they are so much shorter and less muscled than they expect? It's a common sight to see Peter climbing on counters to reach a top cabinet, grumbling about how he's High King this is demeaning. (No he never takes the extra five seconds to grab a stool. He will climb that shelf.)
Peter and Susan being delighted because they are no longer almost thirty. (In a few years Edmund and Lucy will tease them about being old and their parents will not understand.)
Lucy doesn't have to deal with periods anymore for a few years yet. Susan might not either. Heck yeah
Lucy loves to climb into her siblings' laps and be cuddled. In Narnia she eventually she grew too big, but now she is small and snuggleable again. Peter is her favorite, and if she's upset, he'll tickle her and tell bad jokes until she's smiling again, but really she loves cuddling with all her family. She grew up without her parents; how many times did she just want to crawl into her mom's lap and her mom was a world away? Imagine the first time she realizes she can now. Or, imagine one day, a cold and grey sort of day, when the rain is pattering against the windows, and it sounds like the rain on the windows of the Professor's house, that first day they went exploring. It sounds like the day they played hide and seek. It sounds so like the rain on the windows of Cair Paravel, that if Lucy closes her eyes she can imagine she's back there, having tea and chatting with Mr. Tumnus before the fireplace of her room, and soon the rain will stop, and they will go out on the balcony and wave to the naiads and the dryads and the mermaids, who have come out to enjoy the rain and visit one other on the banks of the Great River winding past Cair Paravel down to the sea.
But if Lucy looks out the window, all she'll see is the rain over London, so it's not only a cold and grey sort of day, it's a lonely sort of day too.
Susan and Edmund are playing chess in the living room (and they must have studied with Professor Kirke, thinks their mother, because they certainly weren't that good when they left). Lucy goes over to Edmund, and oh dear, thinks their mother, now he's going to call her a baby and be horrible to her, but instead he picks her up and puts her on his lap without even taking his eyes off the chessboard; it's simply a matter of course.
"Doesn't the rain sound familiar?" says Lucy in a solemn, wistful way.
Their mother doesn't know what that means, but her siblings must, because Susan says, "Yes, Lu, it does,” and Edmund gives her a little hug with his free arm as she tucks herself under his chin to watch the chess match.
(Five minutes later there is a crash from the next room as Peter falls off a counter. Their mother does not understand the words he must have picked up from the Professor, but he's grounded for them anyway. His siblings have no respect for their High King, because they refuse to stop laughing.)
