nobody asked, so here's my take on Nina and Maggie's storyline.
in general, i can grumble about how I'd wish their personalities outside the budding relationship arc were handled better; yet I have to admit the ending's impressive. Neil wrote an entire wlw sideplot to showcase the problems of the main couple through their respective counterparts. it sits well with how Aziraphale and Crowley treat humans sometimes. there's a bonus of haha, gotcha, you fell for the character's façade that was meant to be dismantled by the viewer, in the way you automatically assume Nina equals Crowley and Maggie = Aziraphale. it's also fun to figure out why they are the opposite. maybe not enough to sustain the need for watching fully fleshed-out people on the screen, but still a bonus.
the thing is— you're ready to leave, a bit disappointed when Neil takes your head, turns it gently around and says "watch now". at the last possible minute, he invites the precious cardboard cutouts of our ineffable duo to sit on the couch — the special therapy lesbian friend couch — and he lets the toxic relationship survivor say, out loud, "actually, we didn't enjoy being the narrative mirror to your forbidden gay romance :/". you don't even get a second to wheeze what before the soft one chimes in with, "right, especially since it didn't work, because you still haven't confessed your feelings :// get loved idiot."
it doesn't fix the lack of substance, but I'm just saying. show me a TV show writer so self-aware his script choices aren't too fair to the L and B in the LGBTQ community, who decides to apologize by... making out sloppy style with the fourth wall??? i'll wait.

To any lgbtq+ TOH fan kid reading this
I needed Luz and Amity, maybe I wouldn't feel like my feelings were a bad thing, maybe this feelings could even be beautiful
I needed Raine and Eda, maybe I would feel that not only I'm not a freak, but I'm also deserving of love
I didn't have them back then
But I am so glad you do
You deserve the world, and I hope this show gave you as much comfort as it gave me

To all straight people being hyped for Red, White & Royal Blue
I know the title might sound provocative, but hear me out:
As a queer person, it is overwhelmingly beautiful to see so many people excited for an obviously queer movie, a nice RomCom at that.
However, as a lesbian, I have noticed many (mostly straight people) praising gay stories getting publicity and a platform, without acknowledging the devastating lack of sapphic/women loving women media this summer.
While RWRB, Heartstopper, and Young Royals are without a doubt all beautifully made, they are all centered around two men. Many sapphics in the community, especially lesbians, feel strongly ostracized by people talking about "hot actors" and "such a nice, queer summer", because it is hard enough already to not love men in a patriarchal society.
So, if you are a straight ally excited for RWRB (so am I btw!!) please don't forget to a) not fetishize gay men in general, and b) bring awareness to the lack of lesbian representation in all forms of media.
It might sound like nitpicking or whining about nothing to you, but for us lesbians, standing up for us and our place in the community truly means the world!!💕

I've been on such a long streak of good media and now that I try watching a CW show its just bone crunching cringe. In other news, Deadloch is really really good and idk why more people aren't freaking out about it??? It's:
✅ Written by women
✅ Hilarious
✅ Got two female leads (with the best dynamic)
✅ Kate Box is in it (big win, she's so good)
✅ Queer women playing queer women on screen!!!
✅ (what more do you need) A serial killer!
✅ Pamela Rabe is also in it! (I mean their whole cast is spectacular, no complaints)
✅ Compelling and often unpredictable narrative with fun twists and turns.

This summer, over the course of three months at most, I listened to the entirety of Within the Wires. It’s a sci-fi podcast produced by WtNV Presents (Welcome to Night Vale fans, this is right up your alley).
The stories in this anthology are all set in a world parallel to our own, in which the last war in history ended with the establishment of a globalized society without national borders, ethnic divides, and most bizarrely, without biological families. All children are raised communally and none are allowed to know their parents.
Every season (except for the Chicago one, which I seem to recall features a trans man as protagonist) has a woman in the leading role. Every season focuses on the protagonist’s relationship with a woman/the women in their lives. The series has multiple canonically sapphic leads, explores complicated mother-daughter relationships, and dives into the treacherous waters of nuanced subjects, such as:
What does it mean to be an artist? What is art?
What does it mean to love/be in love? What does it mean to be responsible for other people’s well-being, as a leader, a mentor, or a parent?
What does societal progress really look like?
Is greed/arrogance/selfishness inherent to the human condition? (What sociopolitical factors might make corruption the path of least resistance for both politician and civilian, as opposed to compassion and enlightenment?)
What dangers exist in anarchy? What other hazards are posed by hard authoritarianism?
Anyway, if you’re interested in hearing “relaxation tapes” in a high-tech “hospital” being used as a means to coordinate a breakout with one of the inmates, or listening to an old woman ponder and lament the possible murder of her fellow artist & lover, I would highly recommend Within the Wires.

“Lesbian is important to me. The world likes to act like it’s a porn category, not an identity. It took me a while to realize it wasn’t. I want other girls like me to know it’s a beautiful word.”

Subtext only seems gayer than actual text because it’s blatant. It’s put there purposefully. But what you have to figure out is what it’s put there purposefully for.
There’s a huge motherfucking difference between subtext used for queerbaiting and manipulation over an actual legitimate subtext. Xena does not fall into the category of subtext for wrong or selfish reasons.
It was severely censored. They COULD NOT do it.
But if you watch the show - you’ll quickly realize that it doesn’t even fucking matter that they’re not canon.
The creators agree with you anyway that they are.
The reason why it’s still the gayest TV show ever is because the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is the most realistic depiction of love and therefore the best lesbian or WLW representation that there is. Part of the reason why is because they are the main protagonists. They’re the MAIN characters of the show. That may exist but it’s extremely fucking rare. The other part is that the creators see them that way. You get a legitimate lesbian love story because IT IS.
So it doesn’t matter that they’re not textually canon. In fact you could ever say it’s better that they’re not.
Because in a weird, ironic and hilarious way - the fact the show is censored helps a hell of a lot because the creators used the censorship to their advantage. They were clever and creative in getting around the censorship. They built on the relationship through it. And so it’s because it’s censored why it feels so real.
You don’t get canon text like “I’m in love with you”, “marry me” or “I want to have sex with you.”
You get: “It was like I was in a dream too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you..., I felt your presence. And knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” and “Gabrielle, if I'd only have thirty seconds to live, that's how I'd want to live them, looking into your eyes.”
Which is 1000x gayer than anything you’ll get today textually, subtextually or basically any romantic dialogue in a TV show said to another character ever.
Xena is just THAT GAY. It’s extremely gay. It’s a fucking queer show about queer characters. And it is that way because the creators made it that way. They purposefully made it that way. For the right reasons!
So don’t compare it to shit like ‘Supergirl’. The creators/cast/crew ridiculed you. They didn’t represent you. They baited you in and laughed at you. Xena do the opposite. They validate and love you.
