I don’t really understand how some people can interpret Charlie and Vaggie’s relationship as “sisters” or “uninteresting” if they have finished Hazbin Hotel Season 1 completely, because Chaggie’s love languages (both mutual and unique ones) are so obvious.
Their mutual love language is obviously “Physical Touch”. From the start, their hands are on each other constantly. Sure, they are not a PDA couple like Moxxie and Millie, who like to passionately tongue kiss in public, but they LOVE holding hands to support each other. Plus a lot of small gestures like touches on face, shoulder and thigh, just come very naturally to them like an old married couple. I think they enjoy their more intimate moments in private, as Charlie kisses Vaggie on the lost eye in their bedroom, or they deep kiss in an empty hallway.
When it comes to the unique ones, Charlie’s giving love language to Vaggie is “Gifts”. Even when she rants about Vaggie hiding big secret from her to Alastor all the way to Cannibal Town, as soon as they are in Rosie’s emporium, Charlie lands her eyes on the souvenir section and immediately picks up that keychain doll that somehow resembles a chaggie love child for Vaggie. Also, I think it’s possible that the red bow and eye patch that Vaggie wears all the time were gifted by Charlie too, considering how the red theme symbolizes Charlie, especially in the pilot, these things are the only red parts on Vaggie contrasting her own grey/white color theme. Giving gifts showing how much Charlie loves Vaggie makes sense, she’s super rich as the Princess, and Vaggie owned nothing when she was left in Hell. So I definitely think Vaggie appreciates and cherishes all the small gifts from Charlie.
On Vaggie’s side, her unique giving love language to Charlie is “Act of Service”. She manages the hotel for Charlie, supports Charlie’s dream no matter what, and swears to protect Charlie with her life. It also makes sense, considering Vaggie had been a faithful soldier for years, being in service for the person she loves most just comes naturally from her. Again, Vaggie had nothing when she was left to die, so she devotes her whole body to Charlie. I can see that it’s kind of unhealthy to Vaggie’s own psyche, since she sees no value in her own being and feels worthless if she cannot be useful to Charlie, but I think it is something the show might explore in the future. Charlie seems to enjoy receiving service from Vaggie too, she appreciates how much Vaggie’s done for her, and considers them as a team with herself leading and Vaggie executing. Vaggie is very good at materializing Charlie’s plans too. I don’t see anyone analyzing this, but Vaggie’s persuasion of Carmilla is pretty well done that efficiently gets to the weakest spot of Carmilla. Vaggie is the one that acts.
Chaggie is not the perfect sapphic couple, but what makes them kind of outstanding is them being a deeply-in-love stable couple beyond the initial crush and honeymoon phase. I like having such representation like them.
Btw, the script writer of episode 3 and 7 highlighting Chaggie’s relationship is Ariel Ladensohn, who is a lesbian in a stable relationship irl, so I have some faith that the show can do Chaggie justice in the future seasons.

if you haven’t seen a league of their own already it’s honestly one of the best queer shows I’ve ever seen. excellent sapphic rep everywhere and it’s not just a bunch of white queers!!! also watching this was the first time I’ve ever seen an older transmasc person on tv.
it did get canceled, like most sapphic tv shows (sobbing violently) but you should check it out anyways!!
edit: terf found this post and misgendered the CANONICALLY TRANS MAN CHARACTER in this edit 🙃 watch the fucking show bitch

I've talked about it a lot over the last 6 months, but with the year ending, I want to express my feelings once again, with more clarity.
There may never be a character who means as much to me as Suletta Mercury does. There may never be a fictional couple that means as much to me as Suletta & Miorine do. Not just because I love them so much, but also because of what their representation meant to me.
Tumblr media
I've been a Gundam fan for over 20 years. I'd basically given up on a female main character in a main series before G-Witch. Suletta Mercury gave me representation I desperately wanted from a franchise I'd loved for decades. Representation that I'd lost hope of ever seeing.
Tumblr media
And then they gave me even more representation by making her a queer woman. You could not have convinced me before G-Witch aired that Suletta would fall in love with another woman. That Gundam would take that step with it's first female main character, especially with a target demographic of mostly teen boys. But it did. Suletta Mercury fell in love with a woman, and not just that, she fought and earned a happy ending married to that woman. A woman who is just as equally amazing as she is.
(And while it's not representation for me personally, I think Suletta providing representation for women of color and disabled fans is also a big deal.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sure as I grow up, queer and sapphic media will continue to push boundaries, and we'll get more queer female leads in mainstream media. But I can't think of any other franchise I love where making the main character a sapphic woman would mean close to what it meant to me when Gundam did it.
Certainly there's "better" anime out there, even Gundam anime. But none of them mean to me what The Witch From Mercury meant to me. None of them come close to the love I have for this show and these two women.

To any lgbtq+ TOH fan kid reading this
I needed Luz and Amity, maybe I wouldn't feel like my feelings were a bad thing, maybe this feelings could even be beautiful
I needed Raine and Eda, maybe I would feel that not only I'm not a freak, but I'm also deserving of love
I didn't have them back then
But I am so glad you do
You deserve the world, and I hope this show gave you as much comfort as it gave me

luz has such a strange characterization among fandom spaces to me, in which everyone will say and acknowledge out loud that she's canon bi as a front but then turn around and subtly (or maybe not so) treat her functionally as a lesbian, especially with their rhetoric about "shipping her with men", and it's the weirdest form of bi erasure so far, because they're not actually erasing her sexuality thanks to a disclaimer but they also kind of are with their policing.
of course, there DOES exist people who will straight up say she is or should have been a lesbian, but i'm not talking about that separate group of people, especially since they usually get enough deserved backlash ─ however, i'm sure the one this post is about wishes they could be so confident, without a doubt.
there's also an unspoken "rules for thee but not for me" attitude in which lunter is bad because luz is in a relationship already, but then proceed to depict willuz (and amillow) romantically. that reads more indirectly like it's them who fail to take committed WLW couples seriously than those infamously stereotyped bisexuals who prefer a WLM/MLW pairing, but... okay sure!!! the only possible explanation for the hypocrisy here other than "it's bad because i personally don't like it" (a typical anti argument in any given discourse btw) is "you're lesbophobic for shipping a bi character with a gender they are, in fact, attracted to because i want said character to be a lesbian instead and you're ruining that illusion." in any case, they're both obviously some stupidly wrong takes that should always be laughed at out of the room.

I'm seeing a lot of "This is normal for the industry, they don't do explicit queer characters like this, why are you angry/surprised." and to that I say...
Yes, we know it's normal. And?
If queer characters are forever subtext in mainstream media, especially anime in this case, things will never get better for representation. We need shows like this that push the envelope for better representation, even if it's just little by little, so erasing our identities and stories stops being normal. That's why we're angry, because the staff pushed the envelope, gave us a textual explicit sapphic relationship in a mainstream anime that's basically unheard of outside of niche yuri adaptations, and some execs are desperately trying to stuff them back into the old "subtext" box. And we're not going to stand for that.
No one is really that surprised that Bandai took this route. In fact, I think a lot of us expected it, especially those of us who have been around anime, Bandai, and other mainstream queer stories. But shitty corporations are just as allergic to losing money as they are to taking stances on controversial issues, and it is surprising Bandai went this route when it will definitely cost them short-term and long-term profits. That they tried to sweep this under the rug, and tried to have their cake and eat it too isn't surprising, but as fans we can't just let them get away with that. We can't say nothing when companies court queer people and their money with representation, and then turn around and try to deny or erase that representation to appease people who would deny our rights and existence.
So no, I'm not surprised. But I am angry, and myself and others have every right to be. Whether they meant to or not, Bandai's series pushed the envelope for textual and explicit queer stories and relationships in a mainstream anime, and we can't just stay quiet while Bandai tries to walk that back. Every inch of representation we earn is hard fought and we can't just give up that ground by letting things go back to "normal" without a fight.
Sorry for the long rant, it's just frustrating when I see otherwise well meaning people try to even slightly excuse homophobic behavior because it's "normal." Queer people don't need the prevalence of homophobia in the world explained to us. Trust me, we KNOW things are homophobic, we all fucking know.

I’m about halfway through First Kill. The way people were trashing it, I thought it was going to be awful. It’s not. It’s genuinely good. It’s a low-budget, supernatural teen drama. It is no worse than any other corny, straight teen drama. No one bats an eye at shitty straight teen dramas. I watched 7 seasons of pretty little liars. Riverdale is totally ridiculous and it’s still going. Let sapphics have what straight teens have. It’s low budget, it’s not going to get the Stranger Things treatment.
Not only do we get 2 lesbian main characters, one of them is a dark skinned lesbian. The other main character’s best friend is a gay, black man. I cannot speak for the black community, but this show has some good rep in it.
The plot doesn’t revolve around racism, homophobia, questioning their sexualities/being ashamed, or coming out. The drama isn’t that they’re gay, it’s that their families are enemies and they’re star crossed lovers. You know, like Romeo and Juliette.
I feel like non-sapphics especially are holding sapphic media up to this impossible standard in order to be deemed worthwhile. People love to consume mlm media, but they don’t give 2 shits about sapphic media. So in order to be worth watching, it has to be this absolutely amazing show outside of the sapphic rep. We are not allowed to have things that are just ok, that are on the same level as straight media. It has to be perfect.
I also feel like sapphics are so starved for good rep in media that we have such high expectations, and when those expectations aren’t met, it’s this huge disappointment. So try enjoy the goofy, teen drama for what it is instead of trashing it for what it’s not.
How are we supposed to continue to get good rep with bigger budgets if everyone trashes what little rep we do get.
