Subtext only seems gayer than actual text because it’s blatant. It’s put there purposefully. But what you have to figure out is what it’s put there purposefully for.

There’s a huge motherfucking difference between subtext used for queerbaiting and manipulation over an actual legitimate subtext. Xena does not fall into the category of subtext for wrong or selfish reasons.

It was severely censored. They COULD NOT do it.

But if you watch the show - you’ll quickly realize that it doesn’t even fucking matter that they’re not canon.

The creators agree with you anyway that they are.

The reason why it’s still the gayest TV show ever is because the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is the most realistic depiction of love and therefore the best lesbian or WLW representation that there is. Part of the reason why is because they are the main protagonists. They’re the MAIN characters of the show. That may exist but it’s extremely fucking rare. The other part is that the creators see them that way. You get a legitimate lesbian love story because IT IS.

So it doesn’t matter that they’re not textually canon. In fact you could ever say it’s better that they’re not.

Because in a weird, ironic and hilarious way - the fact the show is censored helps a hell of a lot because the creators used the censorship to their advantage. They were clever and creative in getting around the censorship. They built on the relationship through it. And so it’s because it’s censored why it feels so real.

You don’t get canon text like “I’m in love with you”, “marry me” or “I want to have sex with you.”

You get: “It was like I was in a dream too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you..., I felt your presence. And knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” and “Gabrielle, if I'd only have thirty seconds to live, that's how I'd want to live them, looking into your eyes.”

Which is 1000x gayer than anything you’ll get today textually, subtextually or basically any romantic dialogue in a TV show said to another character ever.

Xena is just THAT GAY. It’s extremely gay. It’s a fucking queer show about queer characters. And it is that way because the creators made it that way. They purposefully made it that way. For the right reasons!

So don’t compare it to shit like ‘Supergirl’. The creators/cast/crew ridiculed you. They didn’t represent you. They baited you in and laughed at you. Xena do the opposite. They validate and love you.

So here’s a story that’s currently the fourth(?) next WIP on my list rn:

Tanner being part of one of those groups in high school, labeled as a “bad boy” (the type that wears way too much leather for 30°C weather, smokes regularly, and crosses around on a motorbike) but it’s the actual good kind of bad boy and not whatever recent books have been doing. By which I mean he looks mean and acts the part towards people who he doesn’t like, but he’s a perfect sweetheart with golden retriever energy towards everybody else.

Treech, meanwhile, is a Jehova’s Witness whose family is particularly extreme and abusive. He has to appear always happy and perfect because to make the church look good he has to always look like he has the perfect life with the perfect family and the perfect future. The space behind the closed door is full of mental health issues, indoctrination, and several forms of abuse (because cult). Lamina’s family was also part of the church, but they were much more moderate and eventually left and got excommunicated, meaning Treech isn’t even allowed to look at his best friend since forever. It’s very angsty :).

To distract from several big scandals the church of Jehova’s Witnesses plans a big charity event that takes place in the big park in the middle of the city, and Treech has a spot there where he sells wooden stuff that he made and carved. He learned from his grandparents, who were the only people he had a healthy relationship with aside from Lamina. All of the friends he has now are approved by his parents (so terrible and judgmental people who go way too far in their beliefs). When his grandparents died he kept practicing the craft because it’s all he has left of them. At the charity event he makes stuff on the spot and people pay a differing price depending on what they ask him to make. This is where Treech meets Tanner and his friend group properly. It’s everyone that isn’t Treech. They go to the same school but their groups do not like each other since, you know, Tanner’s group “commits sin”. They ask him to make something that goes against the teachings of the church, and he politely declines before asking if they may want something else. When Lamina comes he looks clearly heartbroken, but apologizes and looks away as he’s supposed to do when seeing someone who’s been excommunicated.

Later, Tanner asks Treech to help him with some kind of project. Either Tanner’s part of the theater club in some capacity or it’s for a party or something. Treech agrees after a bit of convincing and with Tanner being Treech’s main point of contact for the project they have a chance to talk. And get closer. Which leads to Treech realizing he may possibly not be as straight as he thought he was. Given the church and his family’s stance on everything that isn’t the nuclear family ideal, this is not a good thing. It gets even worse when Tanner seemingly starts… flirting with him? Possibly?? But Tanner is a sinner and while Treech likes him and won’t treat anybody badly for making their own choices it’s still wrong and all of this is wrong. Yes, Tanner did start flirting with Treech. Far before he notices and has a mini breakdown over it, because Tanner has a thing for pretty boys. And one with a personality that’s compatible with his? Hell yes.

Long story short Treech has a faith crisis and when his friends spot him with Tanner he gets in deep trouble. He ends up getting excommunicated and kicked out by his parents once he confesses he’s had doubts about small things, even though he never told them he’d had doubts about the bigger things as well, and he ends up running to Lamina’s house. They let him in and let him stay there for the time being, which brings us to the recovery part of the story. Treech and Tanner start dating and while Treech is still a christian, he’s no longer in a cult and slowly starts mellowing out as he slowly shakes himself free of the indoctrination. It’s a long road towards unlearning all that he’d been taught, but things finally look up as he rebuilds his life.

BONUS: Tanner loves coffee and he and several of their friends (including Lamina) spend a lot of time trying new coffees or making their favorite ones. Treech tries his first sip of coffee with them after they made him a fancy one that’s beginner-friendly.

i desperately want a s5 parallel of the mike and will reunion scene in s4 when mike just pats will’s back and pulls away but, this time around, mike buries his face in the crook of will’s neck and holds him so tightly. just, blatantly refusing to let go. i’m imagining it being before a big fight scene or something where they need to be separated?? like mike with dustin and lucas and will with el?? okay, picture this:

“mike, be careful.”

will’s eyes are wild and scanning mike’s face in case it’s the last time he’ll ever see it. memorising every freckle and laughter line.

before him, mike is still. not even breathing shakes his stance, the weight of his eyes concentrating heavily on will’s lips.

the others are saying their goodbyes, a sense of finality in the dusty air of the upside down. mike and will remain unmoving. just looking at one another.

“if it gets too much, it’s alright if you back out. i- we can’t lose you.” will chuckles wetly. “you’re the heart, remember?”

and it’s like a flip switches in mike’s brain. he extends an arm towards will, wrapping it around him until his palm is flat against the small of will’s back and pulling the other into a bone-crushing hug. his other hand slides up to will’s nape. cradling the other boy. despite being taller, mike buries his face into the crook of will’s neck. his nose brushing against ivory scented skin and his eyelashes flutter closed.

will takes a moment to process what’s happening. hands moulded to his sides before he realises that this might be the last time. the last time he could ever see mike. the last time he could have an opportunity like this.

carefully, to not disrupt the moment, will wraps his arms around the other’s shoulders to mimic the way mike holds him: one hand tangled in the other’s hair, one hand firm against mike’s back and burying his nose into the black curls that invade his vision.

they remain that way for a beat too long. feeling each other be alive and present and there. together.

it’s will who pulls away first, as the ghost of tears brew in his eyes. if he stayed, he knows that he would never let go. much like mike does in that moment. despite how will tries to distance himself, mike remains unmoving. treasuring every last second they have.

it’s only when will gently taps mike’s back that he begins to pull away, hands never leaving will’s skin. instead, the one that held the small of will’s back moves to settle in the small dip of his waist. the one on his nape doesn’t move an inch, instead, pulling will’s face towards his. pressing their foreheads together. eyes closed. just feeling.

no words are spoken. they don’t have to be. the two boys know. they know and they’re not letting each other go this time.

behind them, lucas says that it’s time to go and will exhales a shaky breath that has mike pulling away.

it’s slow. their eyes searching each other’s faces once again. they inch away painstakingly. savouring every moment. but mike falters, concentrating on the other’s lips before inching forward. wet eyes flitting up to gaze into will’s as if asking for permission. will desperately trying to say yes.

the sound of a car horn. the pair being flooded in amber light.

when did that get there?

a sharp exhale, a shake of a head and abruptly pulling away. mike’s hands leaving will’s body as though he had electrocuted him.

but, mike smiled. soft. sweet. knowing.

“see you tomorrow, byers.”

Robin and Eddie

Robin is obsessed with Janet from Rocky Horror 100% her gay awaking! For her birthday Eddie gets her tickets to a love show, she gets called on stage and does the Time Warp with the actress who plays Janet.

For Christmas, Robin gets Eddie tickets to a Metallica concert, somehow they convince Steve to drive them. Metal isn’t Robins scene but seeing her best friend ✨gay panic✨ over Eddie is so worth it. Steve doesn’t see five minutes of the show he’s too busy looking at Eddie. Robin decides Steve is their concert dad and he will take them to every show they go see.

Before Robin and Eddie get into relationships, they take each other on dates, randomly. Eddie gets so good at planning dates for Rob that when Nancy and Johnathan finally decide they’re better off as friends Nancy goes to Eddie for advice on where to take Rob.

One time Eddie and Robin bully Steve into letting them do his makeup, he looks hot as hell, Eddie has to go outside and take a minute bc Robin really killed Steve’s eye make up. There’s photographic evidence of Steve looking like a babe, Rob ever lets it go.

Eddie and Rob take Will to super inclusive places, somehow they convince Joyce and Hop to let them take him to NYC at the end of June. He goes to his first gay rights march, (he’s seventeen not 12) Eddie guards him from everything too explicit. When they come home Will is so much more confident. And Robin is determined to take Steve and Nancy next year.
