Mary Somerville, the world's first scientist.

On December 26th 1780 Mathematician and scientist,Mary Somerville was born in Jedburgh.

Before Mary Sommerville came around, the word "scientist" didn't even exist.

When we think of history’s great scientists, names such as Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, or Nicolaus Copernicus likely come to mind. The funny thing is that the term “scientist” wasn’t coined until 1834 — well after these men had died — and it was a Scottish woman named Mary Somerville who brought it into being in the first place.

Mary Somerville was an almost entirely self-taught polymath whose areas of study included math, astronomy, and geology – just to name a few. That Somerville had such a constellation of interests, and possessed two X chromosomes, would signal a need to create a new term for someone like her — and scientific historian William Whewell would do precisely that upon reading her treatise, On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences, in 1834.

After reading the 53-year-old Somerville’s work, he wanted to pen a glowing review of it. He encountered a problem, however: The term du jour for such an author would have been “man of science,” and that just didn’t fit Somerville.

In a pinch, the well-known wordsmith coined the term “scientist” for Somerville. Whewell did not intend for this to be a gender-neutral term for “man of science;” rather, he made it in order to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of Somerville’s expertise. She was not just a mathematician, astronomer, or physicist; she possessed the intellectual acumen to weave these concepts together seamlessly.

Somerville was an intellectual giant of her age. In her mathematical and scientific pursuits, she was able to converse confidently with some of the foremost minds in the natural philosophic community (natural philosophy previously having been the name of scientific endeavour). More so, she was able to do this without attending university, instead acquiring knowledge through her own self-teaching abilities.

Growing up in a lower middle-class household in Scotland, she received a basic education — though this was not any more than was expected of a girl at the time. It was only due to her boundless curiosity in the world around her which she cultivated through various countryside excursions, and through reading the books in her father’s private library, that she was given the spark that became a lifelong love of knowledge and explanation.

As her early academic interests, perceived as boyish, were shunned in the household, she was sent to learn needlework and domestic duties (both of which she met with annoyance). She still attempted to keep up with the more extensive education that boys in her town were provided with (and indeed often surpassed them).

As a maturing young woman of 18, she was introduced into society: attending balls and spectacles in Edinburgh and dancing with nobility. She was outwardly renown as a beauty and was married in 1804 to a wealthy physician.

With her free time as a provincial housewife, she now began to study seriously and continued this after she became a widow three years later. She read the works of Newton, Laplace, Lagrange, and others scientific notables.

By her early thirties, she was solving complex problems and publishing her results in philosophical journals of the time. For this she received awards and public notoriety.

An incredible polymath, she was adept in almost all areas of scientific pursuit. Her interests were so multi-varied and her abilities so keen that she was able to become knowledgeable in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, geography, and astronomy, as shown in the vast scope of her publications.

Her works On the connexion of the physical sciences’ and ‘Physical Geography remained staples years after her death. She was also able to speak Latin and Ancient Greek fluently. Biographer Renee Bergland claimed that ‘she was no mere astronomer, physicist, or chemist, but a visionary thinker’, and one who surmounted daunting mental obstacles

Beyond purely academic interests, she somehow also found time to push her political beliefs and aided in the fight to improve the rights of women. John Stuart Mill presented Somerville with his 1868 parliamentary petition for women’s suffrage — of which she provided the first signature.

She eventually became an image in her own right, espousing the ability of women to improve their situation through intellectual pursuit — to gain an equal footing with men in that regard would later be intrinsic to suffragist efforts. Even more so in her long list of achievements, she was tutor to another giant of mathematical science: Ada Lovelace, a pioneering force in computer mechanics.

As shown, Somerville’s life encapsulated so diverse a litany of achievement and she should act as testament to the power of knowledge to break down barriers. Her legacy was so great that her name was given to an Oxford College, one that was among the first to allow women to attend the ancient university. Among the names of those who helped push women’s liberation, she must be ranked as one of the foremost, though this is not understate her incredible scientific achievement. Certainly, the true testament to her legacy came in her obituary which read: ‘whatever difficulty we might experience in the middle of the nineteenth century in choosing a king of science, there could be no question whatever as to The Queen of Science.

Hullo Marcia! I was wondering, what- for you- are the most annoying misconceptions Disney fans have about Disney (or if you want to narrow it down, just Walt's original three)? I feel like fans for the last 20-30 years are just so intellectually far removed from the franchise and don't understand anything about it which is why we have stupid takes like "Mulan would hate those boring feminine princesses" or "Snow White is passive" or "Rapunzel is the healthiest most feminist Disney film" being passed around like basic facts.

Oooh that's a good prompt. I have so many more, I was actually thinking about making a post about this soon but:

Belle is the smartest princess because she likes to read lol you all knew this would be coming!! It's the most painful because it's overly simplistic, to the point of being glib, but she also probably makes the stupidest decisions out of any princess and doesn't showcase intelligence at all throughout the film, imo. The fact that she holds a eight page illustrated edition of Jack and the Beanstalk doesn't absolve her of her terrible choices, nor the fact that she probably is the most communicatively ineffective character I've ever seen lol

That the original three princesses are practically interchangeable when they could not be further apart in terms of visual decision, storytelling approach, or vocal performance- *especially* when the past two or three decades have given us nothing but Belle and Rapunzel variants.

Snow White being 14 and the Prince being 31...I don't think the people who repeat this actually believe it either, it's just false outrage at this point.

Cinderella waited for a Prince to save her or that Ariel went to the surface only for her man/gave up her voice and family for him (which like...this is already a reach but you have to actively not pay attention to the film to think this).

That Tiana's "girl boss" status is aspirational when that's actually the part of Tiana that's pre arc. Contributing to grind culture isn't a good thing and the movie acknowledges that there's only so much in Tiana's direct control. She grows after she discovers that there's more to aspire to, outside of something that's so restricted to the capitalistic structure. I think we all need to relisten to "Dig a Little Deeper" lol idk if she's a princess, but I feel this about Meg too. Her jaded side isn't #goals the way most people make it out to be, like it's one thing to be relatable but I don't think we should necessarily cheer her being damaged before she works to overcome it.

When they summarize or promote any Princess as "the first who's not looking for a man." At a 2017 D23 panel of four princesses, Annika, Auli'i, and Paige all said the same thing about their princesses by defining them on their relationships to men while only Jodi was smart enough to avoid this trap lol add to this: when they promote a Princess as "breaking the mold," which is the mold at this point.

When they market any princess as the only one to have x attribute or be the most y (it's normally strongest, bravest, fill in your patriarchal attribute here). It's passe at this point and comparing apples to oranges. Tiana isn't the only one that has a business acumen, Belle isn't the only one not looking for a man, etc.

Love is a kind of cannibalism. The more we eat, the less there is, until we all become consumed by it." - Michael Paterniti, "The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese"

Even though the critics and audience were captivated by the show, NBC’s Hannibal got cancelled in 2015 after only three seasons. Hannibal is remembered by the public for many reasons - beautiful cinematography, talented cast and interesting plot throughout its whole run. Some more memorable than others, but nothing can compare in popularity with the intriguing relationship between Hannibal Lector and Will Graham.

Both characters were created by Thomas Harris and introduced to the public in the novel Red Dragon, which came out in 1981. After the first appearance, they were brought back many times in the media such as adaptations of novel Manhunter (1986) and Red Dragon (2002) as well as television series that aired from 2013 to 2015.

So what was so interesting about main character dynamics, that even after 8 years from last season, it sparks conversation and insipes new media? Let’s find out.

Imagine you live in a small town where the social classes are clearly shown and the aristocracy is always in a public view. In these settings, it would be hard for anyone to miss Hannibal Lector and his luxurious feasts. Aristocracy requires specific,prestigious characteristics and Hannibal had all of them - brilliant and cultured forensic psychiatrist, with profound intellect, taste for fine things in life and “supernatural” ability to understand people’s emotions and motivations.

Where someone might believe that Hanibalas life is organised to the colour of cufflinks he wears for a daily cup of tea, it would be madness to say the same applies to Will Graham. A former FBI profiler, who left the field after breakdown, who moved to a rural area, away from the gruesome world of serial killers(and people) he once confronted. Human behaviour profiler that prefers dog company to human interaction. Even after all the attempts, he is drawn back to the criminal profiling switching field work to the teaching classes.

Hannibal and Will at the first glance, have personalities that would never collide and these differences are the driving force in their complex and often tumultuous relationship.

Will possesses an extraordinary empathy, which makes him dangerously sensitive to the suffering of others, in particular the victims of crimes he investigates. As a result or byproduct of it, Will tends to be introverted and reserved, preferring solitude and quiet introspection. Due to his mental condition, he is somewhat awkward and often uncomfortable in social situations (it was hinted by directors and actor Hugh Dancy, that Will is on autistic spectrum). It wouldn’t be a surprise to say that Wills’ moral compass drives him and makes him come back to the field every time. After a traumatic and unstable childhood, he desires to protect an innocent and bring justice to those who committed horrific acts.

Hannibal is highly intellectual, he is a brilliant and cultured individual, who radiates charm and charisma. When dealing with the issue and deciding on action, he approaches it with a cold mind and never allows his emotions to take over. Surprisingly for the audience and Baltimore civilians, his cultured exterior is a facade for cold and philosophic nature. The manners and tactics were in his upbringing and Hannibal learned how to use it for his goals. Hannibal’s charm and psychological acumen helps to excel at manipulation, which leads others to dangerous paths. Often his true nature is disguised in a veneer of social respectability.

As mentioned before, Will’s empathy and moral compass are both strength and burden. Hannibal as a deeply messed up person, sees him as a kindred spirit that might truly understand him. This desire creates a bond between them, and makes Will susceptible to manipulations.

On the other hand Hannibal’s intelligence and charm draws Will, as he was fascinated by the physiatrist and was enjoying the company. However, throughout the series, Will begins to suspect Hannibal’s true nature, their relationship becomes increasingly antagonistic. Due to the complicated nature of both characters and their desire to be truly seen and understable, they mirror each other. Their similarities both repel and attract them to each other, leading to a cop moles and ever evolving relationship marked by tension, trust, betrayal, and a blurred moral line.

Will left FBI field work as his mental health declined. He feels conflicted about leaving the work, however, he is reluctantly drawn back into the world of criminal profiling by his former boss, Jack Crawford.

Hannibal Lector, is introduced as a respected psychiatrist and forensic expert. Jack Crawford seeks his assistance in evaluating and profiling a new serial killer on the loose. First meeting of Hannibal and Will, uncurled when Will is brought to the FBI Behavioral Science Unit to consult on the case.

The initial encounter between Will and Hannibal is marked by a collision of their personalities. The scene unravels when Will enters a dimly lit room with a large conference table. Where Jack introduces him to Dr. Hannibal, a respected psychiatrist and forensics expert. The contrasts within the characters are immediately evident, in their clothes, stance and body language. The discussion about the ongoing case, exposes Will’s empathetic and unconventional approach to profiling immediately stands out, as he re-enacts the crime scene and shares his insight and Hannibal while intrigued by Will’s unique perspective. Maintains his calm and measured demeanour.

The meeting left both characters with mutual fascination - Will is intrigued by Hannibal ‘s intelligence and knowledge, while Hannibal is interested in Will's unusual ability to get inside of serial killer minds. The scene serves as foreshadowing for the complex relationship that would develop between the two characters. It hints at the power dynamic/ imbalance, with Hannibal appearing as a mentor and guide for Will, while also providing leverage for the psychological manipulation and tension that will define their relationship as the series progresses.

As someone who moved a lot in childhood and who keeps distance from people due to his increased emotional intelligence, Will is vulnerable to manipulation through personal relationships. Hannibal inserted himself as a mentor and a friend to Will, offering him a quiet and peaceful place for the forever racing/analysing mind. He became a beacon in Will's world, to whom Will could drift to to find solace and understanding without exploiting.

Position of a friend, a trusted person, someone Will looks towards for guidance, gave Hannibal the ability to undermine Will’s perception of reality and sow doubt in his own experiences. Hannibal’s presentation of contradicting evidence and denial of responsibility, makes Will question the accuracy of his memory and judgement. Doctor Lecter, manipulates witnesses, projects his motives onto Will and exploits Will's mental health vulnerability. By isolating Will and making dependent on himself, Hannibal, created an atmosphere of physiological tension, moral ambiguity and a disturbing power dynamic in their relationships.

A perfect and some would argue the most significant part of the emotional manipulation and codependency is Abigail Hobbs. Abigail is the daughter of a serial killer who was killed by Will. Introduced to the audience in the Aperitif episode, she takes an interesting place in the story, a victim of her fathers actions at first glance, but actually helping him to find new victims. During arrest, her father tried to commit murder- suicide slashing Abigails throat and later was shot by Will. With Hannibal's help, she survived and lived.

For unexplained reasons, Abigail views Will and Hannibal as surrogate paternal figures. Throughout the first season, she develops a relationship with both of them, they play a role of family - something they all were denied before. Will grows attached to Abigail, seeing her as his responsibility and daughter.

Lafter Abigail discovers what role Hannibal played in her dad's arrests, she disappears: her blood is lately found on the kitchen floor, suggesting Hannibal in fact murdered her. In season 2 finale Mizumono, it is revealed that Abigail is alive - missing an ear. Hannibal implies that he had intended for Abigail to come with them, when he and Will ran away , until he discovered Will’s betrayal. A result and punishment for Will, after stabbing Will, Hannibal slices Abigail's neck in front of him and leaves her to bleed out. After Hannibal escapes the police, dying will desperately tries to save Abigail before losing to his own wounds.

A cat- and- mouse game is a central and enthralling aspect of the narrative. Both characters take roles of predator and prey at different times.

It does start with an infinite circle - an empathetic profiler, who in his job often plays the role of hunter, pursuing and understanding killers yet in the eyes of Hannibal he is prey. In contrast Hannibal is a cunning serial killer who is a hunter in his nature but conceals his true colours and at times appears as a prey being pursued by law enforcement.

Throughout the series, their roles are getting constantly reversed. The game blurs the lines of mortality. Will is sometimes forced to cross ethical boundaries to catch Hannibal, while Hannibal pushes Will to confront and accept his darkest. To mould him, to his design.

Surpassingly for the action that would drive people apart, in the show, the game deepens the connection between Will and Hannibal. Their relationship becomes increasingly complex and intertwined, with moments of mutual fascination and repulsion.

Through the season,roles are concentrated getting reversed shifting the power dynamics. This could be seen clearly twice in every season.

In the first season we see Will as a hunter, assisting the FBI in profiling and capturing serial killers. Hannibal Lecter is presented in a role of protector and confidant for Will, guiding him through his mental struggles. Through subtle manipulation, he positions himself as a mentor and friend.

Second season meets with Hannibal orchestrierung events that lead to Will being framed for multiple murder. Hannibal is a complex show, with dark themes and corrupted characters, so when someone expresses sympathy or admiration to the main characters it raises questions, how morally correct it is.

Shows in itself, is multi dimensional, delving in the characters background, motivation and vulnerability. This encourages the audience to empathise with the characters who commit morally reprehensible acts.

The main character that audiences usually sympathise with is Will Graham, with his internal struggle, burden of the empathy and moral dilemmas he faces, create a character that is so easy to sympathise with. In the eyes of the audience he is a broken one, who needs help and understanding, even after committing crimes later in the season.

Hannibal not so often, receives empathy even though a lot of fans are drawn to this complex character. His charisma, intelligence and motivation fascinate the audience, who close their eyes on his serial killer nature. His background, upbringing and care for people close to him, make him a conflicting character in the eyes of the audience , who constantly question “is it awful, to feel sympathy for him and his action even though he is a serial killer?”.

The constant blurring of moral lines challenges audiences to reassess their own ethical judgments and confront the complexity of human nature. The moral complexities faced by characters, particularly Will Graham, encourage viewers to reevaluate their understanding of right and wrong within the context of the narrative.The show was praised multiple times for the cinematography and attention to the details, which keep the audience on their heels even now. Smallest of details were put in the show for the purpose. It would be hard to explain and note all the symbolism in the show, but two recurring, seem to be more important than others.

First one we see on the screen is a teacup, symbolising in the show, impermanence and fragility of relationships with sanity. Often, later in the series, the recurring motif of the teacup, often shattered and broken. This portrays a statues within characters, particularly in the confusing relationships between Hannibal and Will. Consider a setting where graduating from a certain school gives you the right to wield political power on a national level, depriving everyone who doesn’t attend of the right to vote, but the bottom third students of every year get transformed into magical slaves. How terribly would the Senshi or Overwatch crew handle that?

Okay, so, let's get this out of the way first: WHAT THE FUCK.

Now that we've taken that important break, let's think about this.

Do we know what they teach at this school? Because I think that would be a large part of my decision for this. Some of the cannier players in the game would enter if they thought they stood a chance, but by the very nature of the thing they ALSO know that the best of the best are going to go here. Do you think you're in the top 66% of 1000 driven and probably proven intelligent people? I mean, I probably would be like, "I guess I am a voteless worker bee."

So, for the purposes of this question, we'll assume it's a standard high school type setup, with, fuck, I'm just doing this for the purposes of answering. We'll use what was the AP track for each at my high school, because, well, I'm familiar with it.

Math : Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calc

Science: Earth, Biology, Chemistry, Physics

English: Four years of upper level Literature courses focusing on analysis and knowledge of the canon.

History: (Insert country of origin here), Government, World i, World ii

Language: Four years of a language, I took Spanish.

And then we can make space for other shit. We had 6 periods a day, but not every day had to be the same. Whatever, we'll go with the guideline.

Minako would never do it unless she was sure she could find a good way to cheat on everything. Minako's not stupid, but I do think she can be a little intellectually lazy. Sitting down and actually doing the work would take her aback a little bit, but I also think she knows that and also isn't too proud to admit, to herself at least, that she might be in danger there.

Michiru's family has so much money and influence that even if she can't vote, she can vote, so I don't see her willingly putting herself through that.

Haruka would not attend, but it would only be because Minako stopped her from some desperate and quasi-suicidal jaunt to prove herself worthy or some shit. She knows its dumb, Mina knows its dumb, but here she is, signing up for it! It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Overwatch:

Lena has laughed herself out of the building already. Thanks but no thanks. Voting isn't worth the entirety of a physics class and having to do well in it on top of everything else. She'll go wash glasses in a pub if she has to, goodbye.

Fareeha acknowledges that it is a difficult task, and it will encourage a high level of competition, but luckily, rigorous testing of her abilities is a boon in her eyes. She spends long nights studying and sharpening her acumen. Literature is never her strongest class, and she does worry about it, but she gets it together just fine, and is strong enough in everything else.

Mercy is the sort that is more than smart enough for this sort of thing, but I don't know that she would want to sign up for it because it just seems cruel. It seems wrong. She will, of course, be talked into taking a spot, because better someone with her scruples than someone chomping at the bit to have the power.
