How to Write Characters With Romantic Chemistry

Writing great chemistry can be challenging. If you’re not super inspired, sometimes the connection between your characters feels like it’s missing something.

Here are a few steps you can consider when you want to write some steamy romantic chemistry and can’t figure out what’s blocking your creativity.

1. Give the Love a Name

Tropes have a bad reputation, but they can be excellent tools when you’re planning or daydreaming about a story. Giving the romance a name also assigns a purpose, which takes care of half the hard plotting work.

You can always read about love tropes to get inspired and think about which might apply to the characters or plot points you have in mind, like:

Friends to lovers

Enemies to lovers

First love

The love triangle

Stuck together

Forbidden love

Multiple chance love

Fake lovers turned soulmates

There are tooooons of other tropes in the link above, but you get the idea. Name the love you’re writing about and it will feel more concrete in your brain.

2. Develop Your Characters

You should always spend time developing your characters individually, but it’s easy to skip this part. You might jump into writing the story because you have a scene idea. Then the romance feels flat.

The good news is you can always go back and make your characters more real. Give them each their own Word or Google doc and use character templates or questions to develop them.

You should remember to do this for every character involved in the relationship as well. Sometimes love happens between two people who live nearby and other times it happens by:

Being in a throuple

Being in a polyamorous relationship

Being the only one in love (the other person never finds out or doesn’t feel it back, ever)

There are so many other ways to experience love too. Don’t leave out anyone involved in the developing relationship or writing your story will feel like driving a car with only three inflated tires.

3. Give the Conversations Stakes

Whenever your characters get to talk, what’s at risk? This doesn’t have to always be something life changing or scary. Sometimes it might be one character risking how the other perceives them by revealing an interest or new fact about themselves.

What’s developing in each conversation? What’s being said through their body language? Are they learning if they share the same sense of humor or value the same foundational beliefs? Real-life conversations don’t always have a point, but they do in romantic stories.

4. Remember Body Language

Body language begins long before things get sexy between your characers (if they ever do). It’s their fingertips touching under the table, the missed glance at the bus stop, the casual shoulder bump while walking down the street.

It’s flushed cheeks, a jealous heart skipping a beat, being tongue tied because one character can’t admit their feelings yet.

If a scene or conversation feels lacking, analyze what your characters are saying through their body language. It could be the thing your scene is missing.

5. Add a Few Flaws

No love story is perfect, but that doesn’t mean your characters have to experience earth shattering pain either.

Make one laugh so hard that they snort and feel embarrassed so the other can say how much they love that person’s laugh. Make miscommunication happen so they can make up or take a break.

People grow through their flaws and mistakes. Relationships get stronger or weaker when they learn things that are different about them or that they don’t like about each other.

6. Create Intellectual Moments

When you’re getting to know someone, you bond over the things you’re both interested in. That’s also a key part of falling in love. Have your characters fall in intellectual love by sharing those activities, talking about their favorite subjects, or raving over their passions. They could even teach each other through this moment, which could make them fall harder in love.

7. Put Them in Public Moments

You learn a lot about someone when they’re around friends, acquaintances, and strangers. The chemistry between your characters may fall flat if they’re only ever around each other.

Write scenes so they’re around more people and get to learn who they are in public. They’ll learn crucial factors like the other person’s ambition, shyness, humor, confidence, and if they’re a social butterfly or wallflower.

Will those moments make your characters be proud to stand next to each other or will it reveal something that makes them second guess everything?

8. Use Your Senses

And of course, you can never forget to use sensory details when describing the physical reaction of chemistry. Whether they’re sharing a glance or jumping into bed, the reader feels the intensity of the moment through their five senses—taste, touch, sight, sound, and smell.

Characters also don’t have to have all five senses to be the protagonist or love interest in a romantic story. The number isn’t important—it’s how you use the ways your character interacts with the world.

ahn yujin was out of your league in every way, shape, and form. you were the most quiet and antisocial person in the entire school, and if it wasn’t for the fact that you were partners for a paper, you wouldn’t have even met her. yujin was talented and gorgeous, a deadly combination that left others pining after her for god knows how long. unfortunately, you were one of those people. you knew better than to fall for the girl who was good at everything.

from her vocal skills to her dancing, she was the epitome of what everyone wanted to be. usually her locker was surrounded with confession notes and the occasional flowers, and truth be told those flowers made you sneeze whenever you walked past them, so you couldn’t imagine how annoying it must be for her. the girl who was good at all things could not avoid the mob of people that followed her everywhere.

however, there was also one other thing ahn yujin was not good at: english papers.

Its the reason why you and yujin got paired up in the first place. yujin’s grades were anything but stellar, and yours were practically perfect. your teacher had asked you to help yujin and not just do the entire paper yourself, which made you internally groan because that had been your plan all along. unfortunately, that landed you into your present predicament with the brunette in front of you.

“yujin, that’s not how you spell it.” you timidly pointed out on the google doc in front of her. you two were currently writing a paper on the impacts of shakespearean literature, but unfortunately ahn yujin kept misspelling the word “shakespeare.”

yujin’s brows furrowed, her eyes glancing over the sentences she wrote, scanning to look for her alleged mistake. “oh, sorry.” she apologized before hitting the backspace to fix her misspelling.

to say the past hour had been awkward would be an understatement. since the final draft of the paper was due in a week, you both agreed to start on it as soon as possible since your schedules may clash.

little did yujin know that your schedule was entirely empty, and only consisted of studying and watching the newest netflix series available. you would never tell her that, though.

your fingers twitched as you stared at the screen in front of you. the two of you had divided the work up by sections, you each taking a pretty even split. you were a good writer, and you knew that, but with the prettiest girl in the school sitting in front of you, it truly was difficult to focus.

ahn yujin was gorgeous, but seeing her this close only made you realize that there was not a word in the history of languages that could describe her. she was beautiful, and you had to keep sneaking small glances at her in case you stared for too long and she would notice. it was going to be very hard to finish this paper, especially when she just looked so cute when she was focused.

her eyebrows twitched every few beats, and her lower lip was tucked in between her teeth out of nervous habit. sometimes she would even mumble to herself, and it took everything in you to not blush at the sight.

truth be told, you had known yujin since elementary school. you two were not friends or even close to it, but you saw her on the playground with her friends all the time. in all honesty, you could probably count on one hand how many times you two had ever even spoken to each other directly. you were always there, just in the shadows observing the girl you had had a crush on since the 2nd grade.

“hi.”

you looked down from the swing to see yujin standing to the side of the swingset. “hi yujin.”

the girl in the ponytail pointed at the jacket that was tied to the other leg of the swing. “i need that,” she said as she shifted her weight in the grass. “but you’re swinging, and i don’t want to get hit by you.”

“oh,” your attention was drawn to the object of inquiry as you tried to slow down your swinging to hopefully hop off and grab it for her. except before your feet could hit the ground, yujin s voice stopped you.

“no, keep swinging. Its okay.”

your head tilted to the side as you looked at her, still swaying forwards and backwards. you were confused. she wanted her jacket back, so you should stop and get it like she wanted. why would she ask you to stop?

“but what about your jacket?” you asked sincerely, trying your best to not stop swinging like she asked. the other girl smiled brightly at you, not breaking eye contact as you swung back and forth in front of her.

“it’s okay, i can wait for you.”

you were brought out of your thoughts as yujin shut her laptop and began packing her things. “thank you for your help today.” she said with a small smile, slipping her laptop into her backpack before swinging it over her shoulder. you sent a nod in her direction, mirroring a small smile in return.

“no problem.”

“i’ll call you friday, okay?” the brunette pushed her chair in as she stood, waving a goodbye as she walked out of the library. you rubbed your temples and laid your head on the table, doing your best to not shout in frustration.

the paper was already stressful, but you seemed to underestimate the impact of your crush on the girl who was out of your league.

a few days passed, each consisting of the same school day routine that included your wandering gazes to the girl who sat in the front of the classroom in every subject you two shared.

you were usually good at focusing, but ever since you two got paired together for your project, it ended up putting yujin in the forefront of your mind far more often than you were used to. you weren’t complaining, of course.

yujin was pretty to look at, but she danced in your mind for hours on end. the mental picture was almost as good as the reality. it was just a happy crush, truthfully. the two of you never even had a conversation more than 2 minutes long before now. you didn’t understand why you still liked her.

especially since she was definitely out of your league, and there was no way she even knew more than your name. did she even know your full name? she should, considering how long you were in classes together for, but did she care to remember such a minute detail?

you made your way through the hallway, following the familiar path to your locker. once you turned the corner, you saw your crush standing in front of your locker. confusion laced your features as you slowly approached her.

“yujin? what are you doing in front of my locker?”

the taller girl turned around at the sound of her name, her entire face lighting up at the sight of you. “hi y/n, i brought you cookies. consider it a ‘thank you’ for being the best partner.” she shoved a box of homemade cookies into your hands, the soft smile never leaving her face as she stood before you.

you looked between the cookies and then her a few times, mentally processing what was happening. “oh, you didn’t have to, really. thank you, though.” you mustered up a small half smile.

as you turned to open your locker, you noticed that yujin wasn’t turning to leave. you grabbed the binder you needed before turning your attention to the taller girl once more. “did you need something else?” you asked gently, not really knowing what to say.

yujin’s smile faltered a little, her gaze looking from you to your locker until finally landing back on you. “are you free tonight?” she asked.

you shook your head a little too fast, feeling slightly embarrassed of yourself. “i can’t work on the paper tonight, i need to study for the biology exam. sorry yujin.” you smiled softly.

yujin’s shoulders sagged a little, but she quickly straightened her posture. “no worries. i’ll just see what i can do on my own then.” she shot you one last smile before she turned to leave.

you shut your locker before shouting back one last comment at her. “don’t forget to spell shakespeare correctly.”

the taller girl turned around at the sound of your voice, a genuine smile gracing her features as she heard your comment.

“it would be easier if you were there to remind me.”

as she disappeared into the sea of people, you couldn't help but shake your head at your heart racing in your chest. “she’s just being nice,” you muttered to yourself before turning on your heel and walking the opposite direction to your class.

the next day arrived, thursday, and you couldn’t help but feel as if someone’s eyes were on you the whole morning. you shifted in your seat, trying to focus on your notes and the teacher writing on the board. however, once you turned to glance at the glock, your eyes met yujin’s.

wait, yujin? your brows furrowed automatically, earning a timid smile from the brunette across the room as she practically shrunk in her seat. she gave you a small wave before turning and facing the front of the room.

your heart fluttered in your chest for a moment, but it was short lived as you cursed yourself mentally. yujin was your project partner, nothing more. you two hadn’t even scratched the surface of “friends” in your book yet.

shortly after, the bell rang, signifying the end of the class period. you got up to collect your things, but the moment you did, you saw yujin moving towards your desk from the corner of your eye. except, when she was a row of desks away from you, you saw her stop in front of the desk of someone else.

your eyes glanced over to the direction of the girl, trying your best to not feel your heart squeezing in your chest.

yujin was talking to someone else, one of the other popular girls in her clique. you reprimanded yourself for even thinking she would possibly talk to you outside of your assignment.

you spent the rest of the day avoiding her, but you could only do so much since tomorrow you two were supposed to facetime and finish another part of the paper. if only you could have been more talkative in elementary school and could have made more of an effort to be social. maybe you and yujin would be more than just english partners.

it was all just wishful thinking, but even so, it was hard to not blame yourself for not making more of an effort to be more social.

once you got home, you spent the rest of the evening writing more of the paper. you knew you didn’t need to since yujin was doing her best to pull her load, but you still felt the need to do more just in case she wasn’t able to finish anything last minute.

your head hurt from staring at the screen for so long, but eventually you managed to finish another three paragraphs to the body of the paper. it was due tomorrow, after all. a hand ran through your hair before you checked your phone.

right as you were about to turn your attention back to the daunting assignment in front of you, a notification popped up at the top of your screen.

hey r u up??

sent: 11:01 pm

confused as to why yujin was even awake at this hour if she wasn’t working on the assignment, you shot a response back.

to: yujin :3

yeah?

sent: 11:01 pm

so about tomorrow

you watched the small dots dance as she typed as a twinge of anxiety rose in you. she was going to cancel your last work session together since the assignment would be over tomorrow evening, wasn’t she?

deciding you didn’t want to make her feel bad about ditching, you hurriedly typed a reply before she could finish writing out hers.

to: yujin :3

hey dont even worry about it. i can cover what u don’t finish tonight or tomorrow afternoon. u don’t have to worry abt showing up tmr, its all good

sent: 11:02 pm

the tiny three dots disappeared after your message had been sent, and you breathed out a sigh of relief knowing that you had successfully lightened the load on the girl. taking yujin’s lack of a response as a good sign, you decided to work on the paper for another 30 minutes before calling it a night.

once your head hit the pillow eventually, you were able to rest well knowing that ahn yujin didn’t have to worry about misspelling “shakespeare” after tomorrow.

since school got out early on friday, you were looking forward to being able to spend the rest of your afternoon alone at the library in peace and quiet. it meant you could easily finish the paper before sunset. except, once you turned the corner around one of the shelves, you did a double take.

yujin was sitting at your usual spot, a fresh bouquet of flowers sitting atop the table on her side. you assumed easily it was given to her by one of her many not so secret admirers. slowly, you made your way to the desk table and put your belongings down.

the taller girl immediately straightened up and smiled at your arrival, but her gaze faltered a bit once yours was one of just genuine confusion. “what are you doing here??” you asked genuinely as you took your seat across from her.

you didn’t see the expression on her face since you turned to pull your laptop out from your bag. however, the look on her face consisted of furrowed brows and a pout on her lips. it was quickly wiped off once you turned to face her fully.

“well, i came here to see you.”

your hands didn’t falter in your movements as you began typing away once again, “but i told you it was okay. i’m almost done with it anyway, you didn’t need to.”

yujin’s hands suddenly reached across the table and pushed the screen of your laptop forward gently, not shutting it completely on your hands. “i came here to see you, y/n.”

you tilted your head to the side, still not fully processing what was going on here. yujin came here to see you? for what?

“for what?” she mimicked, and it was only then that you realized you must have accidentally said the last part out loud. she only shook her head and grabbed the flowers next to her before extending them to you.

“they’re pretty right? do you like them?” she asked. you only nodded and admired the bouquet of tiny daises and a few sunflowers. “i think they’re pretty, yes. whoever got you them has very good taste.”

yujin let out a chuckle before sending a witty reply. “i know, i bought them.”

“oh,” your heart squeezed in your chest. she bought flowers for someone? the brunette across the table took note of your visible confusion before finally doing something about it.

“i got the flowers for you, y/n.”

she placed them in your hands for you to take, a proud smile beaming on her face as she did so. “oh, you didn’t have to get me anything yujin. it was just a paper, really.”

the school’s most popular student cursed slightly under her breath before she stood up and leaned over you. even with you sitting, her height managed to make you tower slightly over you.

“consider them an invitation, then.” she whispered, making intense eye contact with you. “go out on a date with me, y/n.”

your jaw dropped instantly, and you almost looked around the library quickly to see if there were any hidden cameras or people recording secretly. was this some kind of joke?

“a joke?” yujin did her best to not look hurt, so she laughed it off. “why would you think this is a joke?”

you realized you accidentally thought out loud for the second time, mentally cursing yourself a thousand times as yujin’s head tilted to the side while she waited for your response.

“you’re really asking me that?” you asked as she nodded in response. you sighed and broke your gaze away to stare at a particularly interesting spot on the wooden table.

“honestly, i have had a crush on you for a while, but you’re just,” you bit your lip trying to gather your thoughts. “as cheesy as it sounds, you’re just out of my league, yujin.”

yujin’s jaw dropped this time, staring at you in disbelief even though you couldn’t see her face. “y/n,” she snickered as she used her hand to gently move your chin up to face her. “i felt the same way about you.”

“me?” you gawked at her in disbelief, truly not believing the words coming out of the other girl’s mouth. “yujin, you’re literally everyone’s dream girl. anyone would be lucky to even have a chance with you. ”

yujin rolled her eyes playfully, “then i guess you will be the luckiest girl in the world, huh?” she smiled softly. “i’ve had a crush on you since i frist met you on the swingset in second grade. i still liked you during your middle school pokemon phase, and i still liked you when you became the smartest person in our grade.”

she grabbed your shoulders and shook you gently. “i’ve never accepted anyone else’s date invitations or dance invitations because i was waiting for you to make a move. but i knew you would never notice me, especially since we didn’t talk much.”

she continued speaking as she sat on the edge of the table behind her. “it was me who actually asked to get teamed up with you. once we got paired up, i knew i had to take a chance, but you just kept dodging me every time i tried to make a move. i brought you cookies, i tried to ask you out twice, including yesterday night, but you just didn’t seem interested.”

yujin paused before she cupped your face and committed your features to her own memory, burning into her mind every detail there was. you were too lost in your own thoughts, realizing that the girl who was out of your league for years was finally confessing to you. it didn’t feel real, and if anything you were waiting to pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming. maybe she wasn’t so out of your league after all?

finally, you responded to her confessions. “i feet the same way about you, yujin.”

she couldn’t fight the grin that formed on her lips, and the sight of her smile this close made your face heat up slightly. she took notice and placed a small kiss on your forehead. once she pulled away, the two of you stayed like that for a little while. just leaning into each other’s touches and admiring each other’s features.

“yujin,” you moved her slightly to re-open the google doc with the english paper in it. “we have to finish this.” the brunette rolled her eyes and shut your laptop. you shot her a knowing look, “i promise we can go out and do whatever you want after we turn this in.”

she reluctantly agreed, opting to pull out her own laptop to help finish things up as well. “if we both work on it, we can finish faster.” she reasoned with a smile. you couldn’t help but laugh at the other girl, and shook your head lightly.

“only if you spell shakespeare correctly.”

“don’t make me leave you alone in this library.”

Rubén is so in love with you and in the heat of the moment, he lets you know his feelings.

Ruben and you had been dating for a month and a half, the relationship was still at its starting point and yet, it was like you knew him your whole life. He was attentive, he loved to make flirty comments whenever he had the chance, and he showed his affection in ways that made your heart warm. That same night you had decided to go to a nice restaurant where they served traditional portuguese food.

Ruben was too excited that you would try the traditional food of his country, he was like a little boy who wanted to show his new toy to his friend. Except, you guys were much more than friends.

Ruben had not been able to take his eyes off you, from the moment he saw you wearing that dress he knew his pulse was frantic. Suddenly, he wanted to come back to his apartment, to have you all to himself. It was selfish thinking, but at the time, it was right thinking. In your case, you were still trying to get used to hearing him speak in his native language. There was something about the way he pronounced the words in portuguese, which made you drink from your glass of water urgently.

Your boyfriend talked to the restaurant managers and once he finished what you assumed was a friendly chat, they led you to a table. You had given Ruben all the freedom to choose the dishes, because you really had no idea of any of them. You were a little nervous about what you were going to eat, but you trusted your partner’s selection.

"If you make me eat something disgusting, I’ll get even."

Rubén smiled at you, "As much as your way of getting revenge sounds interesting to me, I promise I chose food you’ll like."

A few minutes later, the dishes finally arrived. You looked at the plate with your eyes wide open.

"What is this? What's its name?"

"Francesinha. I hope you like it."

Ruben helped you cut the Francesinha and you took the fork to your mouth. His eyes looked at you expectantly, waiting for your approval. The taste came to your taste buds, filling your mouth with flavor.

"Uhm, this is very good."

"Try this too, it’s called Bacalhau à Brás."

Everything was delicious and with each new dish, Ruben told you the names and told you what ingredients it had. You felt the heat build up in your body every time you heard him speak in his native language. He must have noticed the way you were looking at him, because he smiled at you. A sassy smile.

"Remind me to take you to Portugal, I can’t wait to introduce you to my country."

"Will you be my tour guide?"

"Among other things, yes."

"Well, I am a lucky person, I'll have an excellent and attractive tour guide. It will be difficult to focus on the view."

To be honest, Ruben was the view you cared most about.

He laughed, "And I'll have a beautiful tourist I long to kiss all the time."

"I don’t think that’s very professional of you."

He winked at you and you both continued eating from your plates. Once you finished your meals, your boyfriend took you to his apartment. You were entering his house when his hands went to your cheeks and he kissed you desperately. You were as desperate as him. Ruben pushed you to the armchair in the living room, where you climbed into his lap and continued kissing him.

"Do you think I didn’t notice the way you blushed when I spoke portuguese?"

You giggled, "Were you doing it on purpose?"

"Provoking you is my purpose in life, I love to see you all desperate and blushing. You should know by now."

"Ruben..." he didn’t let you keep talking, he just kissed you and you forgot what you had to tell him.

Everything your boyfriend did was on purpose, sometimes he would walk around his apartment when you were there showing off his abdomen, knowing in advance that his muscles and entire body made you think of improper things.. Ruben Dias loved to provoke you.

"Eu te amo."

It wasn’t hard for you to understand what those words meant. Ruben had told you that he loved you. He had said it so lightly that he himself had not noticed. You stepped out of his mouth and took a breath, your heart was beating frantically and you didn’t know if it was from those kisses, or the fact that your boyfriend had told you that he loved you.

"Ruben..." it was the first time he said those words.

"What did you just say?"

You just needed to confirm what you had heard.

Rubén noticed his words and, regardless of the nerves in his stomach, smiled and came to steal you a kiss.

"I said I love you."

"You do?"

"I do. I love you so much."

You smiled, "Eu te amo, Rubén."

Izuku has liked you for years, he understands the fact that he’s your best friend and he wouldn’t do anything to ruin that but he just can’t hold his feelings in any longer. Will you accept his feelings or will you shatter his heart? There’s only one way to find out.

Sitting on his bed, Izuku always wondered what was so great about you. Was it the way you style your hair?

Maybe it was the way you walked around the world like you owned it and nobody, and I mean nobody, could tell you otherwise.

Or maybe it was the way you actually gave a shit about him.

You don’t care about how powerful his quirk is.

You’ll still challenge him head on and shit, maybe sometimes you will lose. Other times, you’ve managed to outsmart the boy

‘You tell them.’

Another voice other than his own responds to him.

‘That’s it! I’ll tell them.’

He’s constructed a plan to tell you everything.

Was it better in his head?

It’s 2pm on a Friday. Training took up a lot of the day but for some reason, the UA students had nothing to do now but relax.

“I’ll make my move now,” Izuku whispers to himself.

“Uhh. What move?” Y/N asks in a whisper as well, startling poor Izuku and having him jump back.

“Oh! Uh nothing! I’m just thinking of ways to study better…! Heh.” He responds in a panic, receiving a ‘I totally believe you’ look from you.

“Sureeee. And I’m Batman.” You respond in a very sarcastic tone. The one Izuku loves to hear, it makes his heart skip a beat.

“But um, Y/N?” “That's my name, ‘Zuku.”

“Can I talk to you for a moment? In private? Please?”

Y/N stares at the boy for a moment before giving him a silent nod.

Izuku wastes no time, grabbing Y/N by his wrist and heading outside of the UA building, he receives weird stares from people he passes but he’s too focused on making sure his heart doesn’t jump out of his chest.

When they’re outside, Izuku finds a tree under the shade, he’s breathing heavily and he’s visibly shaking.

He lets go of Y/N’s wrist and takes a deep breath.

“What’s up, bro?”

God that word brings so much pain.

“Well um… Y/N I’ve liked you for so long and no matter what happened, you were always right there. You made me feel like the best person to ever walk the earth and-“

Izuku is too busy talking to notice your wide eyes and how you look almost…disappointed?

“I wanna cherish you forever. I wanna give you the love that no guy ever will. I wanna be the one you come home to. The one who holds you at night when you don’t feel well. I wanna have arguments and the times we forgive each other. I want to have those late night talks with each other about nothing and make it into something, all I wanna say is I love y-!”

“Let me stop you there.” You interrupted his sentence and he takes a look at you finally.

Did you always look this aggravated?

“I’m sorry but you’re only my friend. For fucks sake, I call you my little brother to my friends and family.” Y/N’s tone is no longer warm but cold.

Izuku’s heart. Shattered into two.

‘Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t cry.’ He repeats in his head over and over, drowning out your voice. He cannot bear the rejection, even though he knew it may come.

He runs off in a flash, not wanting to hear it. The last thing he heard from you clearly was you yelling his name.

Izuku is now in his room. Pillow in his chest and crying.

“H-how could I be so stupid..?” He cries into his pillow.

‘How could he ever love me..?’

Purgatory

Traditionally in Christianity, Purgatory isn’t a place, like pop culture depicts. It’s actually a “cleansing ritual” that some people have to go through to be worthy of Heaven. Sometimes it involves literally being cleansed in fire! However, I’m going with the more pop-culture-y depiction of Purgatory because it better fits the tone of the story, and allows me to do a little more sociopolitical commentary. Which I love, and will always do. Anyway, here it is!

The Structure of Purgatory

In the quilt of the universe, Purgatory is a fascinating square. It holds a mirror to Earth, reflecting it as a plain, unchanging, eerie dreamworld. There are things that look familiar to the souls that wander there, but with a distinct alien veneer that reminds them they are not in the same place they left.

Souls who aren’t worthy of Heaven, but aren’t sinful enough to be sent to Hell, are prescribed time to think and to repent in Purgatory. God gives them a second chance after death to reconcile their sin, and once they’ve atoned to His satisfaction, they’re permitted to take their place in paradise. Those that aren’t forgiven wander until their souls eventually fade to Hell.

Those wandering Purgatory cannot enter or exit of their own volition. The process of forgiveness or fading can take centuries. Hundreds of years of circling in the same empty plane with other souls, just as aimless. Simply put, Purgatory is a holding cell, for those souls who have nowhere else to go.

Wandering Souls

Though they certainly can, the immortal beings of other realms rarely appear in Purgatory. Angels and demons can travel in and out whenever they wish, but angels appear only to bring souls there or relieve others of their roaming, and demons have little use for souls that can’t be further corrupted. The souls of Purgatory have very little company outside each other.

The souls that wander are given little direction as to how they’re meant to appropriately repent. They have not broken their relationship with God, they’re assured, only injured it, and that injury can be repaired with time and atonement. However, many souls in Purgatory are confused as to why they’re even supposed to be repenting. Lying, gossiping, drinking to excess, failure to pray, and suicide are all on the list of venial sins that these lonely souls are meant to be making amends for.

For those confused, they have plenty of time to work through the feeling. Souls in Purgatory are meant to consider their mistakes in life, atone for them, and God would recognize the way they’ve held themselves accountable and offer forgiveness. Eventually.

Some souls, though, become frustrated. Some felt their sin was unavoidable, some felt they didn’t have a choice. Some had no idea they were sinning in the first place, they thought they were doing the right thing. It’s difficult for many souls to capitulate to a God they had never believed in, or to apologize for something they couldn’t have averted.

But even among those that atone as best they can, the resounding silence from above becomes disheartening indeed. After centuries and centuries of wandering, plenty expect that they’ll never be forgiven, no matter how long or how many times they repent. When the angels appear to usher the scant few forgiven souls to Heaven, leaving countless others behind, the demoralization drives them deeper and deeper into despair.

Forgiveness and Fading

The process of being forgiven is, in writing, very simple. Once God has decided a soul wandering Purgatory has repented to His satisfaction, He orders an angel to bring them to Heaven.

In practice, the qualifiers for “satisfactory repentance” are vague. The criteria for one soul might be wildly different from another, regardless of their sin. Some are waiting for a short amount of time compared to the souls that wander the longest, and there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to which souls are accepted and which aren’t. God seems more determined than ever to smoke out the unworthy, and the length of time it takes for any one soul to reach forgiveness stretches far longer than many of Heaven’s agents think is justified—though these angels are wise enough not to voice their criticisms.

Part of the unspoken concern lies in the fact that souls in Purgatory don’t stay there for eternity. The longer they sit, the more they despair, the closer they are to giving up on the chance of being forgiven altogether. Many don’t see a point, after waiting for so long. God had abandoned them, left them to rot and tread the same ground over and over, waiting for a forgiveness that would never come. When these souls turn their backs on Heaven, there is only one place for them to go.

Hell doesn’t “claim” souls from Purgatory. Demons aren’t sent up to collect them, and it’s not as though the souls from Purgatory are itching for damnation. Instead, God watches these souls slip farther from forgiveness, and eventually He lets them go. Like a fishing line, He stops reeling them in, and releases them to the depths.

And though Hell doesn’t necessarily gather up these lost souls on purpose, Lucifer will accept them happily. After all, what better way to motivate his army than with more fodder to be made an example of? What better way to show them how pointless God’s plans are, than with the very souls He claimed to love so much, abandoned at their doorstep? The constant churning of Purgatory’s lost souls are the perfect talking point—remember how much God loved His creations? This is what He thinks of them now. The only option becomes overthrowing Heaven, and proving themselves righteous.

The angels in Heaven who are brave or foolish enough to speak of this problem openly, do so in whispers. They wonder why God is so concerned with keeping out every soul with even a sliver of impurity. They wonder why so few souls get brought up from Purgatory these days, and even if they do, why they stay there for so long. They worry about innocent souls going to Hell under their watch, suffering needlessly for the sake of holy paranoia.

And then they’re decisively hushed, for fear of joining the unholy ranks.

There it is! Those of you who read Justice’s backstory on Tumblr might have found some of this familiar.

I’m not sure how much of all this lore, from Heaven on downwards, will make it into the full story, but I’m glad I got to share it with all of you to make sure someone other than me gets to hear my thoughts!

honest

lino tries to be honest as much as he can and expects everyone to be honest with him. he doesn’t like people who lie or twist the truth or just straight up won’t communicate with him so they don’t have to lie to his face. in a relationship he wants his partner to be 1000% honest with him all the time (i mean who doesn’t?) weather that’s his partner being honest with him when it comes to how they feel or something they’ve done, he always wants them to be honest. but lino of course is honest with his partner as well. he struggles to communicate with you on how he feels and sometimes even pushes you away, but he tries his hardest because he doesn’t want to expect things out of you and get upset when you don’t try but there’s times where he doesn’t try either and gets upset when you get mad at him for not trying, so he tries his hardest to be honest with you when it comes to his emotions…<3 however when it comes to other things like if he were to break something of yours he’d never lie about it and if you hadn’t notice it was broken after an hour or so he would tell you. he still tries to be considerate with that sort of thing because he feels like if he didn’t tell you it’d still be lying. he tries his hardest and everyone makes mistakes. as long as you’re putting in effort and you care then he’s of course going to be putting in effort. a relationship with lino will always be give and take on both sides.

secretive

lino is a pretty secretive person with everyone. it takes time for him to warm up to people and start opening up to them, and even if he knew you for a while as a close friend, as soon as you get in a relationship it’s almost as if you have to make him open back up with you. he’s just a very closed off person, but once he opens up with you, just know you’ve made it. (kiddinggg) but for real, if he opens up with someone it means he considers them very close to him. also he tends to hide his personality to others who aren’t close to him which can make him come off as cold and intimidating, but truly he’s a sweetheart and although doesn’t show show off his love in front of others, he’ll start teasing you more and playful hitting you some more. when that happens, that’s how you know he’s considered you close to him. please just be honest with him all the time and let him know he can trust you. he deserves to put down those strict barriers around him, and he honestly needs to. you love his personality, so once he starts to open up to you, let him know you love who he is and that he doesn’t need to change <3

intuitive

i swear to god this man knows everything. he knows everything about someone just by looking at him. if he’s shutting you out and you’ve talked to him for like months on end and it’s not even friend-zoning, you’re the problem lol. he knows when someone has a bad aura. but i’m sure you’re wonderful and he wouldn’t do that to you (i hope you’re wonderful 🙌) he also just knows when you’re upset. so even if you’re not honest with him when it comes to how you’re feeling,…he just always knows when something’s wrong. he can tell with random strangers as well when something’s just off putting. it’s very helpful though because sometimes you want to tell him how you feel but don’t wanna make him feel bad so even when you say it’s nothing he knows somethings wrong and always helps you in some way. sometimes it’s by just doing more skin-ship which you would notice as it’s somewhat out of character for him, but you wouldn’t think too much of it. in the end it would make you feel better and you wouldn’t even know that was his plan all along..<3

Oz fast food barista AU (as someone who has had 3yrs barista experience). Also their ages can be pretty flexible in this au. Maybe they're college students maybe they're middle aged idk.

Tobias: He's definitely a shift leader and is one of the most responsible employees. Customers like him and he's the person you go to when you need a shift covered. He may not be the fastest barista but he never messes the drinks up.

Busmalis: Random elderly coworker. He's nice but he is SO slow and it stresses everyone out when they see that he's scheduled for a morning rush. Also he spills everything.

Rebadow: Sweet old man customer who orders the same thing every time (black coffee, prefers to pour his own creamer. Also a bagel with butter, prefers to put the butter on himself). Leaves a $1 tip lol.

Chris: Fuck boy employee. Has slept with TOO many coworkers and slips his phone number to like 20 different customers every shift. He's kinda entertaining but otherwise miserable to be around. He isn't particularly good at making drinks and he def doesn't help with cleaning or prep,, but he is unfortunately good at drive thru and making tips.

Ryan: The workplace gossip and devils advocate- you want to know anything about anyone? Ask Ryan. Somehow, he knows everything. He riles people up for fun and pits his coworkers against each other. He spends a lot of the time in the back on his phone, or in the bathroom doings drugs (yes I had a coworker who would do this lol), but sometimes he does work hard; It's very on and off with him. If u work with him for long enough he will tell you about his own relationship troubles. Also he's weirdly obsessed with one customers (gloria).

Miguel: He's fun to work with and is a pretty fast barista, altho he gets in trouble often and has even been fired a few times but somehow they always take him back. Runs to the window whenever there's a dog and makes sure to give them a pup cup. Is the only one who likes cleaning the espresso machine.

Chico: Is best at the food station or as a barista. Sometimes comes to work high but somehow he works better that way. WILL fight customers he does not gaf. Will make shady comments to a customers face if they don't leave a tip. Does not care about milk allergies and rolls his eyes when asked to remake a drink.

Omar: Same as Busmalis where he makes a lot of mistakes😭. Can talk to customers for a long time even if they clearly want to leave and are over the convo. They try to keep him in the back doing prep or the dishes but he loves doing drive thru even though he messes everything up.

Kareem: Shift leader who dreams of becoming manager. WILL call you out if he catches you stealing or sitting around, like if he is on the schedule it will not be a chill shift. He gives good advice sometimes so you would probably like him if he wasn't your annoying snitch coworker lol. He's the only person who makes sure that the bathroom is clean. Is pretty good at making tips.

Kenny: That one random teenager. Probably the laziest employee. He sits on the counter and plays games on his phone, even in front of customers. He's kinda amusing until you remember that he's a misogynist. Constantly threatens to quit but he never does.

Augustus: Okay so since he's in a wheelchair he may have to just stay in one position (I did some googling). Like just drinks or just drive thru since it's pretty cramped behind the counter. He's excellent at taking orders and makes customers laugh. A man who values his breaks. Like he doesn't gaf if the drive thru line has 20 cars, he WILL go sit out back to get some air.

Schillinger: gets paid minimum wage but also thinks that the minimum wage should not be raised. CREEPY. Like you do not want to work a closing shift with him. Will go on racist rants and all you can do is nod. Is a terrible barista and thinks that oat milk is woke.

Mukada: I imagine him as an operations manager type of person? Like he randomly pops into the store to see if everything is going fine. Everyone scrambles when they see his car pull into the lot. Ignores all the dirty jokes that they make. Tries to gently guide everyone to follow the rules but it's hard.

Adebisi: Also a creep that you won't want to work alone with. Do not put this man on drive thru... but he's an alright barista actually. Likes coming up with his own drinks. Has earbuds in when working and no one can get him to take them out.

McManus: Manager who is mad about the fact that he works for a fast food place. Honestly tries to be chill but will lose his shit over the most random things. You can tell him the times that you prefer to work but he will ignore that and schedule you whenever anyways. Does not take shit from customers and will defend his employees against them.

You refuse to settle for the bare minimum in any aspect of your life and people notice this 100%. You probably like to work alone because you know you do it best, you trust yourself and your skills. You have a routine that keeps you in check. You're probably super hard on yourself to stay on top, so you're rarely going to be seen in the party life but when you do show up, you show out baby and people love to see it. I am NOT Thank You Notes

Some disclaimers/notes!

These are the thank you notes from the photo book/liner notes of Stray Kids' I am NOT album, as best as I can translate them.

I do not speak much Korean, but I can read the alphabet and know some basic words. I took a picture of each page, scanned it via Google lens, and ran it through Google translate (and other sites as needed). After that, I cleaned up grammar and weird phrasing and sometimes had to go back and manually correct omissions or figure out where typos got mistranslated. It was kinda grueling at times ngl.

I omitted Woojin's notes, as most current Stays would probably rather it be that way, but I chose not to omit mentions of him in the others' notes. What they wrote is what they wrote.

Hyunjin's handwriting was horrific, so sometimes I truly just had to make my best guess at what he even attempted to write. If I got stuff wrong, blame him, not me.

I'm not gonna correct Felix's own English punctuation and grammar, but again, I'm leaving in his mistakes, and they are not my own 😭

Italics indicate parts that were already in English or the Roman alphabet and [brackets] indicate my own notes.

I left in most honorifics they used, including a common shortening of *seonsaengnim, ie teacher, but putting in addendums like "composer" after every composer listed got a bit tedious, so I left those out. Just assume they're being very respectful of everyone unless they're equal or younger in age lol.

You will quickly figure out that they're thanking a lot of the same people, but you get some quirks too, including some familiar names of other JYPE artists!

Sunset Shimmer is one of the central characters in My little pony: Equestria girls, getting a redemption arc in the second movie (and at the end of the first when she was forgiven).

I like the character for her design (it just screams her cutiemark), her story, and her personality.

It's a story about a human (or should I say pony) who earned her trust through honest labor. And, as is usually the case in children's cartoons (not a rebuke, I'm just stating the fact that this is usually the case in children's cartoons), such characters are quickly forgiven and treated better already. But! As many people saw in the second EG movie, Shimmer was prejudiced in school. Even the main six, although they accepted the fact that the girl corrected herself, still did not really communicate with her, even joked at her sometimes. And they turned to her for help only when they couldn't cope themselves (google The Dazzling - welcome to the show and see for yourself).

Sunset's motivations in the first movie are quite clear, which is good for a cartoon. Shimmer was Celestia's apprentice long before Sparkle (Twilight) showed up, studying quite diligently until the girl got the thing she wanted. Eventually, Shimmer decided to find her own way and fled through a portal to the human world. There she began to literally "rule" the school. All the students feared and shunned her, and Sunset enjoyed her power. And the plot of the first movie began with her act: she stole Sparkle's crown in order to rule the entire human world. But, after she realized she knew nothing about friendship, Sparkle and her friends in the EG universe forgave her. Since then, she becomes a central character in the following movies and Sparkle's apprentice.

In all the other movies, Sunset learned friendship and then started teaching friendship to Sparkle from EG.

Sunset is pretty honest to her friends, tolerant and loyal. Often comes up with interesting ideas that work.

Sunset is quite smart, but not smarter than Sparkle (logically, both were apprentices of Princess Celestia).

Sunset Shimmer is a very important character because she teaches us that if you lose trust once, it can be earned again, but the hard way. She teaches us that it's okay to make mistakes. Sunset shows us by example that even if a person has corrected themselves, they will still be prejudiced against them (because people already know that they have done bad things before and are likely to continue to do them). Sunset teaches us that trust is the kind of thing that is hard to earn but easy to lose.

And some interesting facts about this character:

1) Sunset Shimmer is one of a kind, she has no counterpart in EG, her cutiemark literally means that she is native to both the pony world and the human world.

2) Based her design on the third generation pony, Sun Shimmer.

3) Flash's ex-girlfriend Sentry. In the recent EG movies/series they start their relationship again (already as friends).

4) Very good friends with Twilight from EG.

5) Sunset Shimmer and Mighty Trixie have one thing in common: the two had the same sidekicks, Snips and Snale.

6) Although it was said in the movies and in the show that Sunset Shimmer often visits Equestria, you won't see her in the MLP: FIM series itself, only in the final episode of season 9.

7) Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer are pupils of Sparkle, as well as reformed antagonists (by the way, they will meet each other in one of the series).

8) Sunset Shimmer's design was already known in 2013 because of the dolls' release.

9) Sunset Shimmer has her own element of harmony in the human world, "forgiveness".

10) In the fourth movie, Sunset gains the ability to read people's minds and their pasts (with the help of an artifact - a bracelet representing her element).

11) Sunset has the same problem as Rainbow - they both had no pets and their friends helped them find them (Rainbow eventually got a turtle as a pet and Sunset got a salamander).

12) Sunset Shimmer and Princess Celestia make up after a long fight.

13) Sunset Shimmer is one of the most well-described characters in EG.

14) In the Forgotten Friendship series, she regains the trust of her friends.

15) Many people dislike her.

Now, my opinion on the character.

I like Sunset a lot. I consider her on par with Twilight as the most well-described of the mlp characters. Not only does she have a deep meaning in the series (she was literally born to live in the world of EG and the ponies), but she teaches us, the viewers, a lot. She has her downsides, especially in the first movie, but she makes up for it in the end. Like Sparkle, she learns from her mistakes. And, most importantly, she's fun to follow, which is the most important thing.

1. It’s ok if you skip a work out / don’t eat healthy 24/7 - don’t beat yourself up for it. Social media makes body types a trend. 7 years back it was “cool” to be skinny, today it’s “cool” to have a big ass and tits. Fuck society.

2. Time management is a soft skill that you only get from practice and execution. Sometimes you’ll put more on your plate and not be able to handle it and it’s okay to fuck up responsibilities at times. you’re not superman and you don’t have to be handle everything all the time. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you make.

3. Tell ur friends and family that u love them. Just because a friend may act distant doesn’t mean they hate you - usually a lot of people struggling with issues tend to distance themselves. Check up on them!

4. Do some small creative project a week. Doodling. Sketching. Sewing. Embroidery. Music. Cooking. It’ll make ur heart happy.

5. Emotions are very important. Don’t brush away your feeling. Address them even if they’re negative (jealousy, dislike, insecurity, etc.) - it’ll be easier to get over things and move on if you’re honest with yourself.

6. Not everyone needs to know your business. You are not google. Don’t advertise your life to people who don’t care. It’s okay to have lots of friends but a very small intimate circle you can share / vent things to.

7. Hustle culture is TOXIC. It’s okay to take breaks. (I’m learning this slowly too). You need to take care of your mental health to avoid a burnout later.

8. Be aware of what you’re NOT capable of. Don’t take on tasks / projects / jobs that you don’t have the skills to do nor have the headspace to learn. this is an explanation for the height I gave Valentine (5'2), in 800 ad ( yes 800 it's the closest I could find to 410ad leave me alone.) the average height for males was 167cm( 5'4) to 173cm (5'6) and I think he's a little under the percentile for his age group back in ad ( this doesn't make sense does it), so I put him in 5'2-5'3 without heeled shoes on because of this. ( if the height percentiles for 800 ad are wrong let me know I just used Google so idk if it's right or not)

he wears contacts ( is he blind ? We will never know.)

Monster Spotlight: Chemosit

CR 4

Neutral Large Magical Beast

Adventure Path: Serpent's Skull: Racing to Ruin, pg. 86-87

No no, not Chemnosit, Chemosit! No extra N! Completely different animals. A Google search tells me that 'chemosit' means 'devil' in the language of the Kalenjin people (take this information with a grain of salt, as its source is cryptozoologists, not linguists), whose legends give us this horrid beast in the first place (also known as the Nandi Bear on Earth). 'Devil' isn't an entirely accurate descriptor of these carnivorous beasts, which operate out of hunger rather than evil, but for the unfortunates who live near their territory, there is no other word that could describe them.

The boogeymen of the Mwangi Expanse, endless tales of these creatures' evil are used to scare misbehaving children into shape and prevent them from running too far from the safety of civilization. They're demonized as spirits of wrath, the malevolent night incarnate, or even literal demons in the shape of animals, and violent shamans and druids will sometimes bind the beasts to their wills to commit terrible acts upon the caster's enemies. If a clan of Chemosit is found, the creatures are often pushed back as far as the local warriors can manage, if they're not slain outright out of sheer fear... But don't let any of this make you think that they're gentle, misunderstood beasts I'm trying to make you sympathize with. They're animalistic predators, like sharks or crocodiles or lions, and hold no true malice or sinister fiendish power, but they're incredibly violent, territorial, and ferocious animals that should never be approached. Their territory should be completely avoided if at all possible, and in any encounter with one lethal force should be used to deter them (if not slay them outright if they're too close to a civilization), because like many carnivores on Golarion, they have a dangerous appetite for human flesh... Or, rather, human brains. But we'll get to THAT in a minute!

It is, unfortunately for everyone, difficult to know when you've entered Chemosit territory. These predators have only 2 Int, but possess uncannily sharp instincts which grant them a dangerous cunning; they scrub away their own tracks with their thick tails, bury their dung, and hide the remains of their former meals in caves or other natural pits. They're nocturnal ambush hunters, their myriad senses (mainly darkvision and scent) allowing them to easily move through the darkness with a +15 to Stealth; come daylight, no one but the most canny observer may realize anything is wrong as the beasts erase the most obvious traces of their presence. The only really reliable way to know they're around is when you hear their Terrifying Roar, a low, groaning noise that carries for miles that the creatures use to communicate to the rest of their clan... but because it's so damn loud and carries so damn far, it's not a reliable means of tracking them, just a means knowing that they're out there.

Chemosit rest and socialize with one another among the branches of any massive trees capable of handling their weight, their ponderous size belying a shocking speed of 40ft and a 40ft climb speed, so anyone hoping to clamber to safety from what they may believe is an exotic bear won't live to reconsider their mistake. Their penchant for living among high branches also gives them the potential to launch a vertical assault, literally dropping down on top of unwary prey and laying into them with their Full-Attack if the belly-flop from a 700+ pound animal doesn't kill them instantly. As expected, Chemosit have Claw-Claw-Bite, the former 1d6+7 and the latter 1d8+7. Given that they're all high-accuracy natural attacks, the beasts can freely add Power Attack without losing too much; a +9 to their attack rolls still lets them hit targets in medium armor a good portion of the time, and that extra +4 damage to each attack makes being hit by all three blows instant death for most creatures Chemosit typically hunt.

When able, Chemosit prefer to take prey in its sleep, adding to their frightening presence as boogeymen that steal children from beds. That Stealth lets them get awfully close before most creatures realize they're around, and once in position, the ape-bears coup de grace their slumbering quarry. They're also prone to coup de gracing creatures who've been made helpless one way or another, typically after being beaten unconscious, stopping their attack on other creatures and even tanking the resulting AoOs to do so in melee. This is because if they manage to kill a creature with a coup de grace, they immediately crack open the skull and consume the brain (or brain-equivalent). Chemosit LOVE the taste of brains above any other flesh, so much so that these Brain Eaters gain supernatural nutrition and vigor from doing so, regaining HP in chunks depending on the Hit Dice of their victim, and there's multiple different effects for different creature types! A regular old Humanoid brain restores 1d4 HP x the victim's HD, but a Monstrous Humanoid does the same AND grants the ape-bear the benefits of Rage for at least 5 minutes. Any creature capable of casting Arcane spells heals the beasts AND grants them SR 15, while any creature using Divine spells raises the healing from 1d4/HD to 1d8/HD! Amusingly, eating the brain of an Outsider (even a Native one) restores the beast's HP but also confuses it for 1d4 rounds... and eating the rotten brain of an Undead restores no HP, instead dealing 1d4 points of damage to the creature and sickening it for 1d4 rounds. Losing a party member is bad enough, but having the creature that killed them then immediately benefit from their death is just an extra kick in the teeth!

To round off this article, we'll finish with that damn blood-chilling howling. When a sneak attack isn't an option and their stealth fails, Chemosit disable bands of their foes with their Terrifying Roar, which causes 1d4 rounds of the shaken condition in all creatures within 300ft that fail a DC 15 Will save (unless the creature has recently eaten an animal's brain, which raises it to DC 17)... and worse still, signals to other Chemosit in the area that there's food. Best to finish the fight quick and evacuate before the rest show up, unless that's exactly what you want! Note: That's never what you want.
