House Snowmirth
-
A respectable family on the low end of nobility. They gained their status as entertainers, most famed for their performances during winter festivals, and there’s a long line of ice-carvers, jugglers, musicians, and more in their humble yet sought-after family.
The last head of the house was less than enthused by their frivolous reputation, an academic who hoped the family name would become synonymous with intelligence and higher education—which he did his best to instill in his only two sons. Results were…arguably mixed, as both certainly grew up well-read and quick-witted, but with little interest in a scholar’s life.
The eldest’s skill at humorous wordplay was fine enough to make King Asgore laugh for the first time since the Queen disappeared, and the younger was inspired by tales of heroism to chase glory of his own as a knight. Alas for their father, but the (metaphorical) blood of the performer runs strongly in them both.
The house crest is depicted as a snowflake, curved as if smiling, and denotes the family motto of ‘Greater Together.’

A noble family, with its standing on the decline. While previously renowned for their brilliant tacticians and wise generals, prolonged peacetimes meant less need of their talents and their relevance at court diminishing by the generation.
The previous head of house did all in his power to regain the prestige he felt they were unjustly losing, seeking connections with many other nobles of higher standing—doing favors, striking alliances, and the like. He encouraged similar behavior in his sons, who both grew to be kind and generous young men…who care absolutely nothing for the standing of their house.
The eldest at least chose to seek some glory in pursuing a knighthood, but insists on earning it fairly, and the youngest has chosen to sidestep any attention at all entirely by shutting himself away to work in the archives, largely unseen. Well…though they don’t seem to care to elevate the family name, they at least seem committed to keeping it a good name and wearing it respectably.
The crest of their house is a shooting star in flight, an emblem of the family motto to ‘Choose Your Moment.’

A highly respected, wealthy and powerful noble family, famed for the long line of strong and ruthless soldiers it has always produced for the Emperor’s ranks. Militaristic in nature, all of their line trained from birth with the aspiration to one day fight in the ranks of the Royal Guard…or at least, they did.
The last known head of the house had only two children, who were of course trained heavily in swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat, pit against each other to fight for the glory of becoming the recognized heir to the family name and fortune. Before an heir was declared, however, both sons disappeared, and the fate of the remnants of their glorious house is still a mystery.
In reality, the eldest son denounced the family name and fled, passing over wealth and glory for a simpler life by his own sword. The younger followed after him, still with aspirations to the Royal Guard and to do great and noble things, but determined to pave his own way and not rely on a legacy to win it for him.
The house’s crest is a flaming skull without a jaw, a reminder of the family motto: ‘Show Them Hell.’

House Swiftshield
-
A high-ranking noble family, in close association with the royal family going back centuries. Their line has been direct servants and protectors to the crown as far as anyone can remember, and the trust and privilege built has elevated them quite highly.
The prior head of the house was fully committed to staying this course and maintaining the close, esteemed relationship with Empress. As such, he impressed upon his sons from a young age that loyalty to the crown was their highest calling, and to serve the Empress should come before all else—wants, needs, and even (especially) their own lives. …It was a terrible shock when he was found murdered, and no culprit was ever caught, but life goes on.
The eldest son followed obediently into the life expected of him and, with the privilege of his house to ease his way, worked his way up through the ranks of the Royal Guard to serve at the arm of the Empress herself. The younger was…not particularly suited to any kind of military service, but instead pursued his personal passions and at least displayed a talent for the arts to make a name for himself.
The crest of the house is an ornate winged shield with a bolt of cloth draped over its corner. The family motto is ‘All For Duty.’

House Pinevale
-
A noble family, but more in name than anything else—with little wealth or prestige to call their own. Theirs was one of the first families to settle the land when the kingdom was new, explorers and frontiersmen who scouted territory, cleared brush and raised buildings. Well-respected, but mostly by legacy.
The previous head of house was content with this reputation and dedicated himself to a lifetime of humble, loyal service to the King. How successfully he managed the first two is debatable, but he was unquestionably loyal until his (somewhat early) death. It was his wish that his two sons follow in his footsteps and be dignified and morally upstanding members of court, even should their house never gain higher prestige.
The eldest son at least waited until his father’s passing to do away with the pretense of dignity and pursue a career as the court jester, and the younger never made any secret of his aspirations of glory and knighthood over a humble life—but their moral fortitude and loyalty was always steadfast throughout.
This was especially evident when King Asgore was assassinated, among many other casualties, and both brothers weathered the storm of uncertainty that followed in the kingdom. When the king’s successor faltered and made some questionable, consequential judgment calls early in her reign, and there was an argument, and… Well, in the aftermath, both sons showed the dignity of their house in continuing to serve the queen—the elder now in the stables and the younger tending and treating the knights.
Their house crest is a sleeping bear, the line of its back reminiscent of a mountain range, and their motto is to ‘Walk Soft, Hold Firm.’

House Heatherfog
-
A common house, of neither wealth nor nobility, but even commoners have a care of their legacy. Most of their line were gatherers, herbalists and apothecaries that treated the farmers and peasants in the lower villages. They believed strongly in the power of community and were known for giving aid to anyone in need, regardless of status or ability to pay.
The prior head of the house was fully committed to these ideals and hoped above all else to be able to make a difference in the world, to bring health and joy to as many corners of the kingdom as could be reached. Should his lofty ambitions fall short of his lifetime, he encouraged both of his sons to live their lives the same.
The eldest son, frail since birth, found this path difficult to walk until discovering the contagious joy of music and the ease with which even one so weak as he could make and share it. The younger made slightly unconventional use of the family’s encyclopedic recordings of herbs, making a study of flavor and seasoning in food such that his meals now bring pleasure and comfort to all who partake.
The crest of their house, though they have no signets or shields to engrave it upon, is a simple spiraled cloud. The family motto is ‘See Through.’

House Bludthorne

A high-ranking, famous—or perhaps, infamous—noble family. Their history is just as full of strong, ruthless soldiers as it is bloody betrayals and backstabbing schemes, the name practically descended into legend for how cold and vicious its members were on and off the battlefield, seeking power by any means necessary.
The last known head of house was no different, a cold and calculating man who saw little merit in emotion or attachment. It was something of a surprise when he admitted to two sons, when most assumed he would rather his proud name die with him than pass it to an unworthy successor—which surely anyone but him would be.
It was perhaps less of a surprise when both his alleged sons vanished one day, leading to some…distasteful speculation about their fate, when really the eldest simply grew sick of his father’s iron fist and fled to make his own way in the world, younger brother in tow. They lived for some time in relative anonymity, as a mercenary and a knight of no particular house.
When Emperor Asgore was assassinated and his successor proved to be both inexperienced and made cruel by grief and anger, the younger son spoke out against her and he—and his brother—were severely punished for the infraction. They kept up the appearance of contrition for some time after, enough to amass and stir a rebellion that would unseat the interim queen and set a new king upon the throne. The elder son, rendered mute and with a feeble hold upon his wild, fighting spirit, was unfit to rule but lives a life of luxury as brother to a king and does all in his power to defend his remaining family. The younger rules still, a stern yet fair king to the realm.
The crest of their house is a rose button knot, tied with thorns instead of rope. Their motto is ‘Drop By Drop.’

A lower tier, yet still noble family, comprised of skilled archers and huntsmen who served the crown both in battle and in trapping game. Over time the need for the former diminished and the latter tended to be done only recreationally, leaving subsistence hunting to more common folk the higher into society their name ascended.
The prior head of house saw little value in the old ways and spent most of his time and energy at court, honing social niceties and noble manners to cement his standing as a courtier and cut ties with a somewhat unseemly, rugged past. Still, there were some lessons to be learned from nature—to respect it, to act decisively, to take nothing for granted—and these he passed on to his sons, alongside sparingly few practical wilderness skills, for emergencies.
The eldest son sought a knighthood and the younger favored scholarly pursuits, both entirely respectable paths for the noble courtiers they were intended to be…but fate had other plans. A plague struck the kingdom, brought in by an outsider, and people began to get sick and Fall at alarming rates. No one, not even royalty was exempt, and though their line was nowhere close to succession, the elder son ended up on the throne, completely unprepared for the duty. The younger did his best to support his brother, frequently leaving on trips outside the kingdom to seek food, supplies, and any chance of help for those too sick to do so.
It was during one such absence that the untrained and desperate king made the decision to shut the castle gates and quarantine all who remained…even at the cost of locking his brother out, who hadn’t yet returned. And unluckily, also a disguised witch who came seeking shelter and took great personal offense to being turned away at king’s decree, casting a curse upon him—that his form should be as shifting and wavering as his integrity until he can forgive himself for what he’s done. When the quarantine was lifted and the younger son returned—after much hardship of his own in the wilderness—he found a convalescing kingdom, but no king to rule it, his brother having long since fled in shame.
A regent was left on the throne to rule in his place, and the errant prince’s quest to seek the missing king began.
The crest of this torn house is a lightning-struck tree, boughs in the middle and bolt and trunk above and below, as a mirror. The family motto is to ‘Stand Tall.’

House Moontide
-
Little is known about this royal house, so old and forsaken that even legends of it have mostly fallen out of memory. Its halls, full of cracked stone and discolored cloth, depict paintings and tapestries of both moon and sea, nereids springing forth from the waves and ethereal spirits descending from lunar light and dancing together hand-in-hand.
The last head of this ancient house, who could have spoke to the meaning of these depictions, translated the strange runes on the walls and in the surviving books, passed on long, long ago, with no heir to succeed them. The land itself has withered and grown barren as the castle has sat empty, awaiting a worthy ruler to sit upon its throne and reawaken the old magic that lies dormant within it.
A stranger has come to the castle keep in recent days, seeking only shelter—but the kingdom’s magic has begun to stir ever so slightly, in preparation for a king who can restore glory to the once grand Moontide house.
The crest of this ageless family is a crescent moon, mirrored by a cresting wave, with stars inside the circle they form. Their long unheard motto is ‘Ebb and Flow’

A noble family of high prestige, well-known as trusted scouts and messengers for the royal family since the royal family’s existence. Dedicated, vigilant, and often fleet of foot, their duty has been to serve the crown however they have been needed.
The prior head of house was deeply invested in this reputation, viewing it as a critical stepping stone to maintain should the time ever come that he could…elevate…his status, by alliance or perhaps, by force. By his own boasting, he was quite strict with his two sons, demanding their complete obedience and to see every task, lesson, and trial to the end, no matter the cost. …His sudden death was a surprise but perhaps not very much of a tragedy as he was not well-liked at court (or at home).
He was succeeded by his eldest, who embodied all of his father’s preached values plus a strong love of family, a trait which quite endeared him to the Empress and made his eventual rise to her personal guard all the easier. The younger son, doted upon and left to his own devices took up painting and was actually quite skilled at it. Things went well for a time, and then didn’t.
A dark force set its sights upon the kingdom and took possession of the General of the Royal Guard, using her trusted face to gain access to the Empress, and cut her reign short. Her escape was prevented when the elder son happened upon her, but the ensuing fight blinded and near-mortally wounded him, and many others were injured or killed before she was able to break free of whatever was controlling her. The younger son, as the highest ranking, fully-conscious and able-bodied nobleman left ordered the portcullis dropped, no one in or out of the castle walls until they could all be sure it was truly safe.
When the erstwhile Emperor Asgore heard of what had happened and returned from exile, he was all too gratefully returned to the throne and normalcy—or a semblance of it—began to resume. The older son, no longer fit to fight in the Guard himself, found new purpose in training soldiers and knights to serve in his stead, and the younger took up a guard duty of his own standing sentry on the wall, vigilant to prevent future threats to the kingdom.
The house crest is a raven in flight, beak open to call out. Their family motto is ‘Watch Close, Fly True.’

The history of this house is particularly odd…in that it seems to have no history. It’s strangely absent from all court genealogies, even under misspellings or in records thorough enough to outline the detailed lineage of a common-born ditch-digger from five generations back.
The previous head of this house…was not, actually, the head of this house, because it didn’t exist until quite recently—but he did exist, at least until he didn’t. He was a nobleman, of minor standing, unmarried or otherwise partnered, and the thought that he might pass on as the last of his house—the last of his very species—both alarmed and upset him. He sought to make a legacy on his own, using unconventional magic to make more skeletons of himself. He’d hoped for children, but what he got was…split.
The twin sons of the house which does not actually exist were born as half-grown youths, with jumbled memories and in an estate actively burning to the ground with a strange, unearthly magic fire. The moment they stepped free of the crumbling manor, they forgot it, as if it had simply been removed from their minds. It was all quite odd and upsetting but the two young men—sans any family to call on, or even a scrap of papyrus to write for aid, if they had—hatched a plan to build (or rebuild?) a life for themselves.
The shorter twin found he had a talent for charming and making friends of even the most standoffish of people, and the taller a gifted logician with an impeccable grasp of etiquette and proper courtly manners. Between the two of them, they made a house of their own and passed it off to those at court as truth. The story of a burned estate (which somehow felt right) and ruined belongings earned much sympathy, and many courtiers allowed them use of rooms for a time, invited them to feasts to take their minds off the trouble, introduced them to other sympathetic nobles—all the way up to the king himself, who especially favored the taller twin’s wise advice, and now they’ve all but made it as the real deal, a noble family.
The crest they long ago decided on for their house, and are finally having properly cast as seals and signets and embroidered into finery, is a balanced scale with ringing bells and trumpeting horns to either side. The motto of their very small family is ‘In Fair and Foul.’

A lowly ranked family, not far from commoners. Primarily known as guards and watchmen in the lower towns, minding fields and livestock from predators and thieves, their history is far from glamorous but still worthy of some respect for their role in maintaining order.
The last head of house was not entirely pleased with their lack of standing, but was largely resigned to it and realized the folly of looking a gift-horse in the mouth—or more plainly, of taking their relative comfort for granted and risk losing it entirely by trying to scrabble for more, and more, and more. He counseled his children to strive for excellence as what they were, and to not reach too far beyond their station.
His eldest managed to both obey and disobey this directive as a mere insouciant jester, but to the highest authority in the land, and his younger openly dismissed the idea of not aiming too far above his station by seeking a knighthood. Still, their ambitions carried them well and they were happy, until they weren’t.
A necromancer besieged the kingdom one day, slaying all in their path and resurrecting all they killed to serve in their army of the undead as mindless slaves. Only the jester was spared—an act of cruel humor—and escaped to find the court physician who had only just missed the slaughter by a day’s travel. Together they found a cursed tome of the same dark magics the necromancer used, a slim chance to undo what was done…that only one of them had the nerve (or lack of care for the fate of his soul) to take.
The former jester became a death wizard himself, turning his bones to cold iron and giving his soul for the power to wrest control of his felled kingdom away from the necromancer and revenge his loved ones. After, their bodies died again, properly this time, but their spirits—warped and altered by death and resurrection—did not die, made capable of persisting after death as human souls sometimes do. The kingdom, including a delighted invulnerable phantom knight, chose to remain in the land of the living as a haunted ghost kingdom, and continued life mostly as normal…just, now technically dead.
The family crest of the fallen jester and ghost knight is the skull of an ox, draped with sacrificial tassels. Their motto is ‘Bounty From Barrens.’

House Morngleam

A highly respected and highly wealthy noble family, built by merchants, bankers, and tradesmen, all renowned for keen intuition and a drive that never quit. Somewhat lavish in matters of taste, they’re nonetheless known to be honest and of excellent character which has brought them quite far in the world.
The last head of house was a proud man, bordering on boastful and often going on about the great glory of his house (to many sighs and rolling eyes), but he never spoke falsely. His sons were raised to be proud and confident in all that they do, and to strive to add their own great deeds to the many that adorn their illustrious and distinguished name.
The eldest son sought to serve the kingdom as a knight someday, and the younger thought the archives would be a noble, if humble, pursuit…and this is where fate found them when the kingdom came under siege by a great and powerful army. Queen Toriel bravely resisted the invasion and for a time, her forces held ground, but soon—overwhelmed by numbers and tireless warring—they were forced to retreat behind the castle gates and attempt to withstand the war of attrition brought to their doorstep.
Mere weeks away from being starved out and forced to surrender, the squire snuck out of the castle, willingly risking life and limb to seek aid for the kingdom. Though he avoided detection in his escape, he had little success finding allies willing to fight the enemy he described…until a strange feeling compelled him along an untrod path, deep into the heart of the forest, where a faerie ring lay awaiting. Entering, he found the Summer Court—faefolk—willing to lend their aid, at a price, and only should he bring his monarchs to them to pay the same.
Returning to the kingdom, fae-touched and stranger than when he left it, he managed to convince the queen to come along and with help, even tracked down the estranged king too—but that ‘help’ who insisted on coming along (his brother, the Captain of the Guard, the court physician) cost him a greater price than he had already promised to pay… Still, bargains were struck, alliances made, and the kingdom freed itself from the siege, with very few Affected by the fae. No longer a fighter but with a strange sight and a keen sense of the world’s energies, the former squire now serves the queen as a mystic, and the bookish scholar has followed a new attunement to the wilds and keeps the falcons of the crown.
The crest of their house is a half-sunburst, reminiscent of the early hours, and their motto is ‘Chase The Dawn.’

Underfell Fruition
-
House Warhart
-
A common house, populated mostly by rangers and mercenaries in years past. At times they’ve been wealthy and had some measure of respect approaching nobility, but these times coincided with skirmishes and conflicts which required their skill—and peace has reigned for many decades now.
The last head of this house was greatly dissatisfied with the state of things and believed it was his purpose to elevate their name to—and beyond—the glory it had once held. Seeing an avenue to assert himself as a powerful figure, he turned to religion, preaching to those who believed that an Angel of legend would come and lead the kingdom to peace and prosperity the likes of which it had never known. He told all in the congregation he presided over that the coming of The Angel was soon, and when they came, their followers would be called to fight, conquering all who chose other beliefs and bringing peace by means of hard-won war.
He had two sons by this time, the first sickly and weak, and the second healthy and strong. The elder son was expressly vocal in his disagreement with his father’s ideals and the way he was manipulating the townspeople for his own benefit…and for this, he was thrown into an oubliette, left to wither and starve on meager rations tossed down to him sparingly while his absence was explained by ‘divine illness,’ punishment for his heresy. The younger son, around the same time as his brother fell ‘ill,’ was sent away to train with the militia—a show of his father’s faith in what he preached that he would even give his own son for the cause.
The imprisoned son survived in captivity, growing attuned to the magic in the very earth and air around him and even learning to draw upon it to sustain himself when he may have otherwise perished. His brother adapted to the grueling training regimen he was subjected to and became the star soldier of the zealots’ army, the strongest, fastest, and most obedient of their number.
When the Royal Guard came to investigate the rumors of a military cult forming in an outlying village of the kingdom, the cult’s leader was dispatched and all prisoners freed—including the brothers. The elder found a niche performing in the court of the Emperor whose forces ended his stay in the ground, and the younger became a carpenter’s apprentice, seeking a constructive trade as far from making war as could be.
The crest of their house is a stag with its head lowered to charge. Their motto is ‘To The Last Man.’

House Nyteblade

A house of great wealth and means, but little social clout…at least, as far as is public. Their line is known to run in one of two directions: recluses and bon vivants, with little variation. What they all have in common, unbeknownst to the court at large, is a hand in shady dealings, from theft to reconnaissance to assassination and everything in between—all in the service of the crown. To maintain secrecy, they could never be acknowledged openly for the work they’ve done but have always been rewarded well to live comfortably and maintain cover.
The now-late head of house was a diligent and ruthless spymaster for the Empress and pulled the strings of all his clandestine assets as deftly and nimbly as any harper, a true master of the web he’d woven… Though, perhaps too tangled in it to realize the folly of raising two sons to follow in his ruthless, underhanded dealings, sons who feared and hated him in equal measure.
Following their father’s untimely death, the eldest son succeeded him directly, taking control of the underground network that had been built to serve Empress Toriel and continuing to use it for exactly that purpose, business as usual. The younger son, well-practiced in espionage and assassination, maintained a cover as a roguish devil of a courtier with time and money and little care to how he spent either…Perhaps not so much of a cover, but a very easy reputation with which to do his job.
The removal of their father was the turn of the hourglass, however, and gave them a limited time to make arrangements to be out of the picture before the killers and assassins under them followed in their footsteps and tried to remove them the same way. Choosing a suitable mark, the ruler of a neighboring kingdom, the younger employed his considerable powers of seduction and won a marriage proposal to bring him—and his brother—far, far from the reach or care of conspirators he was no longer in the way of.
The crest of the house the youngest son left behind, that the eldest still bears is a pair of crossed stiletto daggers with ornate grips. Their motto was ‘From Shadow, Glory.’

The royal family of a middlingly prosperous kingdom, availed of decent resources and power, but suffering from…mismanagement. The line is mostly known as drunkards and adulterers and warmongers—but not in any of their hearing, as they’ve also been known for their hot tempers.
The last monarch on the throne was no exception to the reputation of their family, spending poorly and skirmishing often with neighboring kingdoms over territory, to say nothing of many, many diplomatic incidents caused by poor manners with dignitaries at court.
No one was especially surprised when the monarch chose a low-ranking foreign nobleman of…not dissimilar temperament to be their prince-consort. It was a bit of a surprise when the monarch passed, though the suggestion that ample wine and poor decisions may have been the cause made sense of that. It was certainly strange when none came forth from the proper line of succession and the prince-consort became the crown-prince, but…
Frankly, the new prince was a decidedly cooler head upon which to rest the crown, with a much better grasp of diplomacy and charm than any monarchs in living memory. A bit of a philanderer and a shirker, with a tendency to flounce off seeking pleasure over duty, certainly, but the brother he brought with him does a decent enough job wrangling his larking about and seems to keep things running smoothly. It seems…for the best, to let things continue as they are, and perhaps have a kingdom which can be taken seriously by the other realms, maybe even respected.
The crest of the family is the head of a wolf with its jaws open in a snarl. Their motto was, and is ‘Swallow Mercy.’

A common family, little more than simple farmers who tended the land and reaped the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor. All among their number were hard-working, salt of the earth folks who had little money and next to no prestige to their name, but plots of land to sow and (usually) enough to go around.
The last patriarch of the family was hardened and embittered by a life of labor he had never wanted and dreams he was never able to achieve for himself. To his sons, he left the lesson that there isn’t a thing in life that will simply be handed over for nothing, and to grip onto whatever you get with both hands.
Both of his children took the lesson to heart, and the elder studied and honed his humor until he was good enough to perform in the royal court for the king himself, and the younger spent countless hours training mind and body to have a chance at becoming a fully-fledged knight of the realm. They lived well, comfortably above their social station for many a year.
Things changed when a stranger came to the kingdom one day and snuck into the royal vaults beneath the castle, where many powerful artifacts and beautiful treasures were stored. They took only one small thing, a token said to grant prosperity to those who hold it…at the cost of unleashing a great darkness upon the land from which it is taken. In the wake of the theft of this cursed totem, a perpetual night fell across the kingdom and its borders were ringed with sharp and wicked thorns—penning its inhabitants in. King Asgore attempted to tear through the briars as they began to grow in, devouring the kingdom like a living thing, but the prick of their thorns caused a deep and deathly illness and he passed quickly after that.
The Queen burned her way through—a passage which grew over completely in only days—and ruled in his stead, adapting the kingdom to survive in permanent night. The people slept in strange patterns, ate what crops would still grow in darkness, and simply...carried on.
The former jester quite lost his good humor and began to manage the dungeons as they filled up with treasure-seekers come to look for more artifacts like the one that was famously stolen from a cursed kingdom where there was surely no one left to protest—grave-robbers in intention, if not in truth. The aspiring knight found greater purpose in trimming back the perpetual growth of the evil thorns at their border, preventing risk to others who could scratch flesh upon them and fall gravely ill, perhaps die…and of course to keep the castle and its nearest surrounding lands from being lost to those who still must live there. Like himself!
The crest of their family is a tree of life, centered more on the roots than trunk or boughs, and ringed by an ouroboros. Their motto is ‘Dig In Deep.’

So I had to write a personal narrative for composition class. I wrote about post-ritual depression leading to a career change, and I thought ghumblr might enjoy. It's only 763 words (after padding it out with some extra academic phrasing) but I don't want to clog your feeds too much so it's below the cut.
"Have you ever like something so much that it rewired your brain?"
Have you ever liked something so much that it rewired your brain? I can’t pinpoint exactly when I first heard the band called “Ghost,” but it was most likely sometime in 2022. I think the first video (from whichever of the dozen algorithms we get our content from today) pushed to my feed was their performance on Jimmy Kimmel, where they played their song Call Me Little Sunshine. I was taken aback by their theatrical look and sound. I listened to a few more songs, became a casual listener, and even bought their latest album when I came across it at Josey Records. What I can pinpoint, however, is the day I turned feral: April 9, 2023, Easter Sunday.
Being only a casual listener still, I was curious as to what was going on when I saw that Ghost was trending on Tumblr. As I scrolled through the tag, it became more and more clear that, not only had they had dropped new music, but a new music video to match, almost entirely without warning: a cover of Phil Collins’ Jesus He Knows Me. Of course, I had to listen. From the driving intro into the first verse, to the poppy chorus, to the lyrics addressing hypocrisy from the church and its leaders, it was almost like twenty-eight years of religious trauma were healed in four minutes and five seconds, as if it were that easy. I wasn’t cured, but they certainly made a dent. I listened to it on repeat and branched into the rest of their discography.  After two weeks, I finally caved and bought myself a pit ticket to their upcoming Dallas tour date.
When the day finally came, five months later, I could barely contain myself. I felt if I could leap hard enough, I would jump right out of my skin. I had taken advantage of the fact that I had the previous day off from work and pretended that I was taking a small trip for Labor Day. This allowed me the day off for the concert. My employers already think I’m strange enough; I didn’t see any need to make it worse by asking for time off to line up for a concert by a Satanic rock band hours early on a Tuesday. Despite the 103-degree weather that day, I made it to the general admission line around noon. I chatted with my new line buddies over the next several hours about the band, how we got into them, and a little bit about our lives in general over the water that the venue security provided. For the first time in a while, I was surrounded by people like me.
They say that concerts can be a religious experience. I’m not sure I agree, but they’re not exactly wrong. It really is overwhelming, or at least can be. Many aspects are similar, if not the same. Between the community and camaraderie with your fellow “congregants” and the feeling of the music all the way down to your bones, there’s certainly something that happens internally. This concert (or ritual, as Ghost fans lovingly call them) was no exception. After all, when you’re a stone’s throw away from your obsession, bathed in light and confetti, you can’t help but feel a little changed.
Post-concert depression is a very real and powerful force. It’s even stronger when you come back to work after finally feeling happy and rested only to be met with snideness not even fifteen minutes into the day. I was already dealing with years of declining morale. I wanted to be happy again, like I was the night before. I started looking at job postings immediately. I nearly got one in the same field but interviewed poorly. Eventually, I decided to make up for lost time and try to make a move into what my high-school-aged-self wanted. Or at least something close. Unfortunately, even though apprenticeship-type situations are common in the music industry, it’s very hard to break in without any kind of provable experience. I looked into some recording technology schools but didn’t really feel the need to go into debt on a loan for them. I was about to lose hope, but then I had a lightbulb moment and found that Dallas College has a program for Recording Technology. My application and registration were late in the game, but I was able to squeeze in before the start of this semester. Now, I’m finally doing something I want to do, and it’s all thanks to a funky little Swede in black and white makeup.

I've never done any kind of proper historical studies -- everything I've learned is from high school, from reading things on wikipedia, from history podcasts, and more rarely (because I rarely have the patience to read) from books. So I... hardly know anything about specifics. The kind of intimate knowledge of the inner workings of empires and peoples that a college educated student would have.
This might sound odd but... it's a bit reassuring to me that even someone who's spent years studying those two specific subjects doesn't feel comfortable saying for certain what any individual person, or group of people may have been experiencing at any given time. That the environment people lived in was so *vastly* different that one can only have clues as to what people felt, how they experienced the world.
All that being said, and I do apologize if this is another too-vague or too-broad question -- do you feel as though your college studies have changed the way you relate to the past?
So I wanna unpack some of this a little bit, because you're closing off some avenues I don't think you need to close off.
College students do learn about specifics, but the thing that's really being taught in college is how to think and learn. Skills, not facts. Part of what made that conversation with the history majors so memorable is that it highlighted how much is different between majors in that regard.
Sociology vs psych might be a valuable example here: Rule of thumb, sociology teaches you to approach issues on a population level, groups of people; psychology teaches you to approach issues on the individual level. There's very few areas where either is 100% right to the exclusion of the other, but it's useful to know which lens (a) you and (b) your source is using, if you're going to be reading about, e.g., the causes of poor academic performance in American boys. Psych says this is due to a rise in ADHD; socio says our classrooms aren't suitable for...anyone, but especially people who have never had to sit still and be quiet (ie, boys).
WHAT you learn in college is HOW to learn. (It's also, crucially, a period where 1, you very often have nothing else to do BUT learn and 2, you are paying a gazillion dollars for the privilege of learning, so you're heavily incentivized to actually do it. Free activities are easier to stop doing than ones you paid to do.)
It's how to navigate databases, how to read articles (peer reviewed or otherwise), which resources to trust, what it MEANS to trust a resource, how to read with different lenses, how to find information at all, what sorts of conclusions are reasonable or specious to draw from that information (aka: how flimsy can your argument be before your professor will tell you to find more evidence), when to apply certain techniques...
* Enormous caveat: if your professors were any good. Some of them aren't. Many of them aren't. If your professors universally suck, you'll come out with a meaningless degree and student debt, which is not ideal.
But theoretically, at least, the purpose of 21st century higher ed is to teach you how to learn.
Then you go apply it.
All of which is to say: The granular factoids I have on call about 15th and 16th century explorers did not come from college; I didn't take a single class on that era. They came from books and articles and online resources. College taught me how to evaluate those books (although common sense plays a huge role here) but the rest of it was self driven.
Here's the other thing: None of that knowledge is paywalled.
While the decline of Google makes finding some of these resources harder, I highly, highly recommend just searching things like "how to judge a history source" and "basic resources for social history" (a guess based on your focus on 'inner workings of empires and peoples'). Then read a bunch of links (please first filter for obviously AI written pages!).
THEN ask yourself some questions: Where did those links disagree? Are there areas they all agreed on? Was there something that 8 pages agreed on but 2 did not? If it seems like a key area, go check who's written & hosting those links, and consider what they might (or might not) know about the field. (If r/askhistorians and PragerU disagree on a definition, you can bet which one I'm listening to.)
After reading a bunch of pages, you probably have MORE search terms and MORE questions. Repeat. Repeat.
I just mentioned r/askhistorians: For this sort of thing, I would read anything with the Monday Methods flair. Start here. That page was last updated 5 years ago but it DOES link to 3 years of mostly weekly posts on how historians think. 100% free. No college tuition required.
Podcasts are great resources. r/askhistorians is fucking invaluable. I would murder for the r/askhistorians modteam, no questions asked.
Reading is a learnable skill! Reading history books is very learnable! I stopped reading print material for 2 years, and when I was getting back into it, I set myself an alarm. 15 minutes a day in the evening when I had nothing else going on. Start with fiction if you're out of the habit, YA would be my recommendation, then start expanding.
There ARE history books with audio versions out there and you can check your library system for those; I don't vibe with audiobooks so can't provide any specifics, but I know they exist. Most history books won't have recordings, though--what you may be able to do if you check out or purchase a digital version is use a text-to-speech program or screenreader to read it to you. This obviously has some drawbacks :P But it's an option!
So: Did my degrees affect how I interact with history? Yeah. I'm not discarding the impact of my education, I had some really phenomenal classics teachers. But they're not the only way to get that result. There are other routes to the same destination.

How to recognize when you need a pychologist's help
Tumblr media
In our fast-paced and often stressful world, it's essential to prioritize our mental well-being just as we do our physical health. However, many people find it challenging to determine when they might need the assistance of a psychologist. Recognizing the signs that indicate you could benefit from professional support is a crucial step toward maintaining good mental health. Here are some key indicators that it may be time to seek help from a psychologist:
Persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety. If you consistently feel overwhelmed by sadness, anxiety, or other negative emotions, and these feelings interfere with your daily life and activities, it's a strong sign that professional help may be beneficial.
Major life changes. Significant life events, such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss, or relocation, can trigger emotional turmoil. If you find it challenging to cope with these changes or experience prolonged distress, a psychologist can help you navigate through the transition.
Difficulty in managing stress. If stress becomes unmanageable, leading to physical symptoms like headaches, digestive problems, or insomnia, or if it hinders your ability to function effectively, a psychologist can provide you with effective coping strategies.
Strained relationships. Consistent conflicts with family members, friends, or colleagues may indicate underlying issues that need professional intervention. A psychologist can help you improve your communication and interpersonal skills.
Unhealthy coping mechanisms. Relying on unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance abuse, self-harm, or excessive overeating to deal with emotions is a red flag that you should reach out to a psychologist for support.
Decreased interest in activities. If you've lost interest in things you once enjoyed or find it challenging to experience pleasure, it might be a symptom of depression, and a psychologist can assist in addressing this issue.
Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks. Persistent intrusive thoughts or flashbacks related to traumatic events can be a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Seeking the help of a psychologist experienced in trauma can be immensely beneficial.
Decline in work or academic performance. A sudden decline in your work or academic performance may indicate emotional or mental struggles. A psychologist can help you identify and address the underlying issues affecting your productivity.
Isolation and social withdrawal. If you consistently isolate yourself from friends and loved ones, preferring solitude even when it causes distress, a psychologist can help you explore the reasons behind your withdrawal and work on reconnecting with others.
Physical symptoms with no clear cause. Unexplained physical symptoms like chronic pain, fatigue, or gastrointestinal issues can sometimes be linked to mental health concerns. A psychologist can help identify and address the psychological factors contributing to these symptoms.
Remember that seeking help from a psychologist is a sign of strength, not weakness. They are trained professionals who can provide you with the necessary tools and guidance to improve your mental well-being. If you recognize any of the signs mentioned above, don't hesitate to reach out to a psychologist, therapist, or counselor. Taking this step can lead to a happier and healthier life.

I've been generally... impressed with growth I've seen in the base line of the SPN fandom's dialogue, despite my complaints at certain groups and flares.
When I first hopped off the fence I had watched SPN fandom on for years, even THAT was many years ago.
Back then, this fandom denied a great many things. They refused some things you might laugh at now. The global decline of ratings, for example. Jared stans denied that loudly when they tried to blame Misha for "low ratings", but the second their show crash they tried to use it (incorrectly in a nonapplicable way). Scripts I leaked. Endings I uh. Specced. Maybe even again got mocked for speccing by would be ITKers like Pat, until Dabb confirmed it.
Like. My life is a cycle of posting things and some asshole arguing with me and brushing the results under the rug but
Fandom mostly--MOSTLY--seems to get it. Discourse is opening about corporate structures and trades and potential influences. People are sending good asks, and one not driven purely by a single ship, though sometimes how that ship interplays with this grander media universe.
Which was always kinda the whole point.
I think Tess said it best. (For those that don't know, she was a professional reviewer assigned an episode 300 review so power watched the show for research for the article while livetweeting)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and it's true.
And I look to the current crowds.
From Amazon, an inbound flow of mature viewership simply discussing the canon that is, laughing off the anti takes this fandom let itself get sucked into for years. They're used to adult storytelling. Whats's canon is canon. Not what personally fulfills our representational wants is canon. Just like. What's canon is canon. Many things it is, but queerbait it isn't.
SPN and CW fandom arguments exist in a bubble, often with young audiences convinced of what "queerbait" means divorced from actual academia, and even more criminal older people with their own agendas, sometimes even dog whistles, sending them out and blinding them so deeply that a clutch of largely 20 year old women feel entitled to even harass, attack, or wish failure on middle aged queer men for not writing middle aged queer men the way 20 year old women wanted, and didn't fight "hard enough" for them, the 20 year old women scream as they crack the whip at creators in shit situations.
But then to act SO GODDAMN SMUG because all your twitter friends believe the same thing with equally shallow effort, convincing yourselves it's progressive, and just LECTURING people looking up from like. Their actual LGBTQ histories, discussions, communities, going "genuinely, what the fuck is wrong with you, shut up"
But I think this flare of QUEERBAIT is a sort of culture shock response. These people are VERY CONFUSED. SPN fandom has let these poor definitions, poor applications, and absolutely terrible academic or historic lgbtq media knowledge be normalized in a sort of "all opinions about how media should work are equal", and it's not. Because like [gestures at my wall trying to keep people from getting lost in the WBD merger]
They want to put that point back in. SPN's audience is suddenly maturing, and being TREATED by this new Amazon audience LIKE The Boys or Mad Men in discussion. And soon, eventually, HBO too.
It seems to be MOSTLY, but not exclusively, younger people, that deeply crave a simple point or objective to fight towards, something you can take a hammer to or throw a molotov through a window and fix, and I'm sorry, part of growing up in the LGBTQ community is realizing it's never, ever that simple, and figuring out sometimes abstract or bizarre compensation methods to fight against our marginalized status without stepping on each other's feet.
So let's make sure we're not cracking the whip on people for, say, performing their own representation demographic well for us while snapped in shackles with a shock collar. Jesus christ.
And yeah, if you missed it, another Queerbait Scholar came out. Trotted out the normal fandom talking points. Tried to declare about degrees and education, pasted a citation
...gave away they've never done research in their life, as the academic paper they cited was a small piece that mapped out argued definitions and, ultimately, disassembled her argument piece by piece about the damages that come with bad faith readings like hers, with a fairly strong conclusion that in no upside down world could be conveyed as even lightly compatible with her point. Like literally, it's very clear she googled keywords trying to force a biased result, read a google truncation, and hit Ctrl+F without reading any surrounding content, because it was like a dissertation DESIGNED to end her.
And we've let this kind of bullshit drive us a while.
I'm glad. I'm glad a lot of people have turned around, but I'm also quite sad that there's others just seeming to double down and increase their violence against LGBTQ content and creators to compensate, screaming "I'M FIGHTING FOR YOU" while mentally pummeling the fuck out of those creators for trying.
I can't emphasize this enough. For all the pomp of her, the people she was trying to downtalk at in huge Dunning-Kruger in a neon lit exhibit display--everyone else read what she cited. She didn't, as was evident by her citing it.
The labor of YOUR ignorance already isn't OURS to deal with to begin with, but to attach that to INTENTIONAL ignorance, the REFUSAL to listen even when redirected to READ ONES OWN CITATION as actually being COUNTER to your argument--that's BEYOND the pall. That's not even just like, anti-intellectual. It's just being a dishonest piece of shit trying to pitch your personal wants beyond active warriors IN the community. Jesus what the fuck? If your best attempted google fu of no doubt suggestive string words only found a paper telling you that you're wrong, maybe you should listen to the elders that have been telling you to STOP ATTACKING QUEER CREATORS STUCK IN LIMITED SITUATIONS FOR YEARS. But of course, they double down instead, because that avoids having to face the impact of their PAST behavior then. (Or maybe it's just addiction to those sweet, sweet likes and trying to grab them before the claim's popularity goes entirely extinct.)
There's a desire for simplicity, but it's not there guys. Let me emphasize. Almost any single scholarly piece on this that ISN'T a self published piece of nonsense someone points at their own work on? Is gonna say the same thing. The same thing has been said for decades. Berens argued the same in 2003. This isn't new. Yall backwards
Whatever this impregnable wall of bitterness impervious to realities from public common knowledge to their own citations is, it's not progress. It looks alien from the outside, even in actual academic LGBTQ media discussions. You normalized it in a bubble.
The fight for progress is hard and complex and probably kind of disorienting and scary when you're new. There's oppression from above and limitations from within and DECADES of complicated discourse of where moral responsibility lies in support of the content despite shortcomings
None of this, I mean absolutely NONE OF THIS is new. It's a highly explored, delicate and nuanced conversation held for decades--less with changed popular opinion, and more with importance of new scopes like the internet or social media.
But somehow we have one cluster of like a dozen people in each CW teen scifish fandom that absolutely trained themselves into believing their unbridled unforgiving scorched earth bitter hell is "THE" LGBTQ way. Rather than one the community has called destructive or limiting to us in some form, for decades.
You don't get to redefine things and change how it works when you don't even UNDERSTAND how it works. You definitely don't get to pretend it's all the other decades more immersed activists in and WELL BEYOND SPN FANDOM that have it fucked up and YOU TEN are the right ones. Jesus
I'm tired of these perpetual aggressions against queer content and creators from SUPPOSED supporters that are VERY SRS ABOUT REP but can't even read the ABSTRACT or scroll to the CONCLUSION before deciding to cite a piece from a google truncation.
I'm genuinely starting to think there's some terfy ass radfem dogwhistling going on consciously from that corner at this point. There's a level of shamelessness that, even when confronted with their own source telling them they were wrong, they double down.
Because if a bunch of 20 year old women decide to tell a bunch of 40 year old queer men how to write 40 year old queer men to the point of encouraging SPITE AND HARASSMENT, that's it. You're not fighting for the 40 year old queer men. Stop pretending you are. If you wanna say you hate gay men or got issues with them then like, get out and go until you take care of that shit. Because this is looking like a very gay creative room, and we don't need bad faith actors tearing them apart pretending it's as an Ally.
If your wish ultimately boils down to wishing failures on a predominantly LGBTQ creative team, I don't care what you gift wrap it in, it's still shit. You're not an ally or friend in this fight.
Can't believe this fandom hears shit like "real activism takes education and nuanced engagement, not quick responses and hammers, not all moments are portland riots resisting the cops, we wouldn't be here that way; use words correctly, so we can actually address the issues we're facing, actually identifying queerbait, or other issues in the system, because if we know what the problems are each to their own we can start addressing them--to support creatives while fighting back against abusive corporations without hurting those creatives. We can't if we just throw 'everything I don't like or wasn't enough for me' in the same fucking bin. And nobody can even pretend the demand for the right to do so services any action. Their intent isn't action. It's noise.'" and pretends these are irrational or unfair statements.
They're ripping apart the people actually taking action.
For the last SEVERAL years whatever Supernatural fandom has had hasn't even remotely looked like real world activism in representation expansion discussions. It looks like a bunch of people who grew up trained in a normalized thunderdome of bad fandom talking points they don't know better than which have moved the entire fucking talking centers off into another fucking solar system from most of the world. It's bloodsport posing as activism, addiction to conflict rather than discussion of advancement, progress, tactics, or celebrating the content they DO manage to make in a warped system.

Writing Insomnia
@everything.writing on IG
I am currently struggling with insomnia as I write this in the middle of a late night content creating session. Insomnia absolutely sucks and can ruin your life, but anyway, let’s move on before this turns on to a giant rant about my sleep issues.
Insomnia can be one-time or chronic. I’m sure we had one night when we just couldn’t sleep, maybe the night before a really important project or getting back from an international flight. But people who struggle with chronic insomnia have trouble sleeping most nights for months or even years. One night of bad sleep may not do permanent damage, but lack of sleep can cause many health issues down the line over the long term.
Effects of sleep deprivation include:  inability to focus, impaired judgement, mood changes, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, obesity, weakened immune system, and declining cognitive health. Basically, lack of sleep is bad for you. So sleep.
How can you spot insomnia? If someone is yawning frequently, that’s a sign of insomnia but it’s not the only symptom. People will generally be irritated and may be more accident-prone or clumsy. Their academic and athletic performance will also decline. In addition, a lot of people with insomnia are grumpy from not being able to sleep well and some will have brain fog.
What does your character do when they can’t sleep? Some people will use their phone all night or turn on a movie on sleepless nights. Others will attempt to sleep, using different tactics such as meditation and white noise machines without much avail. A lot of people will try to catch up on work or school during their sleepless nights. I’ve also known a girl with insomnia that just stares at the ceiling for the entire night.
Why does your character have insomnia? Inability to sleep can be caused by many factors, but mental health is a main cause for people with insomnia. People with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses may have trouble falling asleep due to the racing thoughts. Other people may have insomnia because of physical illnesses like chronic pain or some medications. Sleep disorders like sleep apnea can often go hand-in-hand with insomnia as a main symptom. Some other reasons are genetics and caffeine intake.
What does your character do to try and treat it? Usually, people with insomnia try to do things to treat it. The strategies they use may or may not help. Some strategies people use are white noise machines, meditation, or melatonin or sleeping pills. Personally, sometimes I just deprive myself of sleep so I sleep better the next night. (not healthy).
Some nights will be worse than others. People with insomnia may have good and bad nights. No one stays up all day every day without sleeping for years on end, I don’t think anyone has stayed up more than 11 days. Instead, people will sleep a few hours each day, or maybe have a few rare nights of enough sleep.
Show how insomnia makes the character’s lives miserable. Insomnia fucking sucks. Like you’re staring at the ceiling at 3 AM still awake and having to get up in two hours. At this point, you’ve watched 80 different YouTube videos. You’re angry at yourself for not being able to go to sleep. Then when your alarm finally goes off, you’re still tired. And the whole day goes by in a blur as you try to concentrate on school or work but just can’t. You try to nap in the afternoon but you’re still so tired, yet can’t turn off your racing mind. Then when you go to bed again, it’s the same fucking cycle.  Insomnia is tiring, in more ways than one.
Research. This is such a common issue that you either suffer with it yourself or you know others who do. It’s not too hard to find personal experiences of insomnia. If you’re struggling, you can just browse r/insomnia for real-life experiences of people who have the condition. But the main takeaway is that chronic insomnia is so much different from one bad night of sleep.
So there it is. This was pretty much me ranting about my insomnia and an informational post about the importance of getting good sleep. But I felt like this post needed to be out there, since I haven’t read a lot of books about it. I hope this helps someone, and I hope anyone struggling with insomnia can get the help they need.

Fresh trimmings
Tumblr media
Alienator, World of Hate 7" (Convulse)
New recording from Portland, OR's Alienator following a 2021 demo. The band plays a sort of mid-tempo hardcore, burly almost-metal riffs and gruff vocals filling out the space afforded by the lower speeds. Passes surface level inspection, especially "I'm Nothing" or the stomping outro of "Social Disease," but all of the parts here don't really coalesce into the total package as advertised. Lyrics are clunky and hackneyed, even by hardcore's low standards, and I'm annoyed on each subsequent listen at how chugging death metal riffs are teased at the beginning of "Senseless Violence" and the title track but not fleshed out. It's all competent and fashionable, from the artwork to the execution, but doesn't really distinguish itself and, at worst, inflicts some secondhand embarrassment.
Delco MF's, March of the M.F.'s 7" EP (MF Records)
Seems recently any hardcore that catches my ear has to be verging on grindcore tempos, and Delco MF's do it better than most. The first 7" was great, and March of the M.F.'s continues the winning streak. There are some strong riffs on here, most potent on the title track, but this is a band primarily carried by the vocals and the drumming. "Future World" is a prime example, the vocals and violent tom fills racing and tripping over each other, until "Death of Me" pleases the crowd waiting to mosh. Six songs in six minutes, no room for filler (or, perhaps thankfully, a lyric sheet) - almost makes me agree with the "Hardcore Rules / Fuck Off" banner pictured on the back of the sleeve.
Mark Van Fleet, Vordenal CS (Refulgent Sepulchre)
I saw Mark perform as Face Place a few years ago, and it was cool, but felt very restrained and almost academic in its approach to noise. I was hoping for something a little closer to the heaving noisescapes he created as 1/2 of Sword Heaven, and now Vordenal comes close to fulfilling that wish: syrupy thick loops are urged to disintegrate, harsh sounds reflect off thin metal walls and a general unease presides. There are tracks, but this works as two side-long pieces. Side A's a little roomier, sounding like a high rise construction site on a windy day, creaking metal-on-metal and eerie whistling, until bolts shear and welds fracture during the swirling fever pitch of "Vordenal Slurp." Side B is just two tracks, and here's where the anxiety begins to burrow under your skin. The chomping and pounding of "Volume Fog" is particularly effective, and its guts are poured into the atonal drone of "Dungeon Summer," a drone that begins to pile on itself and buckle. When I listened to Vordenal on an airplane recently, it felt as if the plane were being ripped apart until the abrupt end of "Dungeon Summer" allowed the oppressive hum of steady cruising back in. What Mark's doing is in the league of Tom Darksmith and Aaron Dilloway, albeit a bit less polished than their recent works, but the stitches showing works in Vordenal's favor.
Life Expectancy, Decline CS (Iron Lung)
One of maybe three hardcore releases to leave a mark this year, Life Expectancy's Decline is a cavernous, feedback-ridden bullet train ride, except you're strapped on the outside like Mad Max in Fury Road. Plenty of noise here, including intro/outro on/off ramps, but the middle section is a pretty potent slurry of metal and punk, a combo that just doesn't add up for most bands. Vocals are a vicious black metal caterwaul, becoming more and more prominent as the tape plays, fully emerging on "Liquidated Flesh" and "S.M.R.A." where the tempo slows just enough for things to get really grimy. Blinding, blown-out, bleak: all applicable here, even if they curiously titled a track "Eggz." Completely unassuming packaging and quietly released, Decline sets a new bar for the skulls-and-chains crowd to gawk at.
Romance, Seven Inches of... 7" EP (self-released)
Hastily assembled sorta-supergroup from Sydney mows down the corny "murder punk" genre tag and reclaims the violent moniker for themselves. The band plays well - bass and drums thump and wallop, guitar slashes with abandon - but the draw here is the feral vocals of Jane, who must've had blisters on her vocal cords after the performance here. "Romance," "Fast Car" and "Surprise" are almost uncomfortable, blurring the line between performance and actual malice, and it's chilling in the best way. Nothing polished here, and all the better for it; you can definitely see why the band chose to self-release these tracks even after a couple of years. There is a palpable ferocity and recklessness across Seven Inches of..., and whoever says "fuckin' nailed it" at the end of "Sex Pact" ain't wrong.
Tàrrega 91', Fill de la Merda 7" EP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
The punk LVEUM mines from Spain almost always hits home with me, and Tàrrega 91' aren't about to break that streak. Fill de la Merda sports a bass-heavy recording, Discharge-style ripping guitars, but makes plenty of room for a prominent Rudimentary Peni influence to show its head, too. Not sure that there's anything groundbreaking to be heard across Fill de la Merda, but it's all performed as if they were the first band to stumble onto this confluence of sounds; that genuine excitement pushes a track like "Autoproclama De L'esclavitut Total" into a burner. Nice quick-hit 7" that checks a lot of boxes for me, especially that little guitar solo on the title track. Yeah, it's comfort food in a sense, but who better to serve it than one of the preeminent labels in punk and hardcore worldwide?

The Effects of Staying Up Late on Youths
Staying up late has become a common trend among today's youths, primarily due to the increasing demands of academics, social engagements, and digital distractions. While it might seem harmless, the habit of staying up late can have significant and long-term effects on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of young individuals.
1. Disrupted Sleep Patterns: Adolescents already face challenges with their circadian rhythm, which is the body's internal clock that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Staying up late can further disrupt these patterns, leading to irregular sleep schedules. This can make it harder to fall asleep, resulting in sleep deprivation and a constant feeling of fatigue during the day.
2. Impaired Cognitive Function: Sleep plays a vital role in consolidating memories and enhancing learning abilities. When young people consistently sacrifice sleep, their cognitive function, memory retention, and problem-solving skills can suffer. This, in turn, can affect academic performance and overall cognitive development.
3. Emotional Disturbances: Sleep and mood are closely intertwined. Lack of sleep can lead to irritability, mood swings, and heightened emotional sensitivity. For youths already navigating the challenges of adolescence, sleep deprivation can exacerbate stress and increase the risk of anxiety and depression.
4. Health Complications: Studies have linked inadequate sleep in youths to a higher risk of developing chronic health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. Sleep is essential for the body to repair and regenerate itself, and depriving it of this crucial function can have detrimental effects on physical health.
5. Reduced Productivity: Despite the belief that staying up late allows for increased productivity, the quality of work often suffers due to fatigue and lack of focus. Youths may find it challenging to concentrate on tasks, leading to a decline in academic or work performance.

Exercise and Cognitive Function: Enhancing Memory and Mental Acuity
In today's fast-paced world, where information overload and constant distractions are the norm, maintaining optimal cognitive function is essential. While many individuals focus on improving their physical fitness through exercise, the benefits of regular physical activity extend far beyond just the body. Research has consistently shown that exercise plays a vital role in enhancing memory, attention, and overall mental acuity. In this blog, we will explore the fascinating connection between exercise and cognitive function, shedding light on the mechanisms behind these effects and providing practical tips on incorporating exercise into your daily routine to optimize brain health.
Tumblr media
Understanding Cognitive Function
Before delving into the relationship between exercise and cognitive function, it's important to understand what cognitive function entails. Cognitive function refers to the mental processes and abilities that enable us to acquire, process, store, and retrieve information. These processes include attention, memory, language, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Maintaining optimal cognitive function is crucial for tasks ranging from academic or work-related performance to everyday activities such as remembering appointments, multitasking, and staying focused.
The Exercise-Cognition Connection
Over the past few decades, numerous studies have demonstrated a strong link between exercise and cognitive function. Regular physical activity has been shown to positively impact various aspects of cognitive function, including memory, attention, executive function, and information processing speed. The benefits of exercise on the brain are particularly relevant for older adults, as cognitive decline is a natural part of aging. However, the effects of exercise on cognitive function are evident across all age groups.
Mechanisms Behind the Exercise-Cognition Connection
The mechanisms underlying the positive effects of exercise on cognitive function are complex and multifaceted. Several key factors contribute to these benefits:
Increased blood flow and oxygen delivery: Exercise promotes cardiovascular health and enhances blood flow to the brain, improving the delivery of oxygen and essential nutrients. This increased blood flow stimulates the production of new blood vessels and supports the growth of brain cells, particularly in areas associated with learning and memory.
Neurotransmitter release: Exercise stimulates the release of various neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which are essential for brain function. These neurotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating mood, attention, and cognition.
Neurotrophic factors: Physical activity promotes the production of neurotrophic factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which act as growth factors for brain cells. BDNF supports the survival, growth, and differentiation of neurons, leading to the development of new neural connections and enhanced cognitive function.
Reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress: Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are known to negatively impact brain health and cognitive function. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, thereby protecting the brain from damage and promoting optimal cognitive performance.
Practical Tips for Incorporating Exercise into Your Routine
Now that we understand the powerful connection between exercise and cognitive function, let's explore some practical tips for incorporating exercise into your daily routine to enhance memory and mental acuity:
Choose activities you enjoy: Find physical activities that you genuinely enjoy, whether it's dancing, swimming, hiking, or playing a sport. When you engage in activities you find enjoyable, you are more likely to stick to your exercise routine in the long run.
Aim for a mix of aerobic and strength training exercises: Both aerobic exercises (e.g., brisk walking, cycling, jogging) and strength training exercises (e.g., weightlifting, resistance training) have been shown to have positive effects on cognitive function. Strive for a balanced routine that incorporates both types of exercises.
Make it a habit: Consistency is key when it comes to reaping the cognitive benefits of exercise. Set specific goals and establish a regular exercise routine. Start with small, achievable targets and gradually increase the duration and intensity of your workouts over time.
Incorporate physical activity throughout the day: If your schedule doesn't allow for extended workout sessions, remember that even short bursts of physical activity can be beneficial. Take breaks from sitting, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator, or go for a brisk walk during your lunch break.
Combine exercise with cognitive challenges: Engage in activities that simultaneously challenge your body and mind. For example, try learning a new dance routine or practicing yoga, which involves concentration, balance, and coordination.
Prioritize sleep and recovery: Adequate sleep is crucial for consolidating memories and optimizing cognitive function. Ensure you get enough restorative sleep each night to reap the full benefits of exercise on brain health.
Conclusion:-
Exercise is not just about improving physical fitness and appearance; it is also a powerful tool for enhancing cognitive function and promoting optimal brain health. By engaging in regular physical activity, you can boost memory, attention, and mental acuity while reducing the risk of cognitive decline. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine, and you'll not only reap the immediate benefits of improved mood and increased energy but also enjoy long-term cognitive advantages that can positively impact various aspects of your life.
Additionally, you can make your exercise sessions even more enjoyable with Lunahead. Lunahead is a fantastic mindfulness meditation app that provides you with plenty of soothing musical pieces. You may listen to these rejuvenating audios and improve your cognitive efficiency.
So, let's lace up our shoes, get moving, and unlock the full potential of our brains through exercise!

Back in Time
It has been awhile since my last post which I believe, before everything happened. This is going to be a lengthy and solemn entry but I’ll try to make it relevant with the attached photos.
February 2022 was the beginning of this story. My mom definitely was not in her best condition for a few weeks and at some point she was eventually admitted to a district hospital. Given that I was away from home and there was restriction to travel outside of the campus, I unable to visit her. We had lots of phone and video calls. Until ramadan came which was in late march, I had to move to another campus in Teluk Intan for 2 weeks. It was conventional and compulsory for O&G posting and thus I went there. The 2nd week ends with the news of my mom been diagnosed with cancer. Everyone breaks down. I bawled like crazy. I never felt something so heavy in my chest. Should I say that, I indeed knew that her condition was bad but I was denial.
I came home the day after. Traveled for not less than 7 hours on the road, I finally met her. She was asleep in her room. Her hands were so warm, probably the warmest I’ve ever touched. She wasn’t herself. She was thin and fragile. She lost her appetite, unable to swallow food. But she still smile occasionally when we talk over some trivia things. The late night before she passed away, she saw me watching the tv and asked ‘kakak tak tidur lagi?’ and that was the last time I ever heard that question from her. The day she gone worked like any normal day except that towards the evening, everything seems so dark and stormy especially in my heart.
Weeks after weeks, months after months passed. I felt so empty and lonely. I never feeI like I needed my mom so much until those days come. It reached to a point I had panic attack that night. I cried almost every day and night but at that time, it was too much. The next morning I had another attack at the clinic. I couldn’t stop crying, I was gasping for air and unable to breathe properly. The nurses tried to comfort me but tears kept flowing for a few minutes. I was referred to an occupational therapist and had a few appointments with her. It was very helpful although it took a few months for me to stand by my ownself.
During those difficult days, I only had my housemates. None of my family members know about this. I never wanted to tell them because I knew each of us struggled in our own way. My housemates tried to comfort me but I rejected them most of the time, and when they didn’t, I resented them. Looking back now, what they did actually was to give me time, plus they didn’t know what to do anyway. My academic performance declined and my mental health worsen right after the incident but as time passes, alhamdulillah here I am.
We finally passed MBBS on last january and it almost a year since my mom left. Currently we are waiting for housemanship. Anxious but hopefully we will be guided through the harsh journey.

Exam Pressure
This is exam season in India for students of almost of ages & with exam comes “Pressure”. Pressure comes from the thought of performing well for one self & for many others like, Immediate Family, Distant Family, Friends, Classmates, Teachers, etc to count a few.
While some pressure can be beneficial in motivating students to study and perform well, excessive pressure can have negative consequences on their physical and mental health. It is important for parents to understand the effects of exam pressure on their children and take steps to maintain a balance between pressure and support.
On the positive side, exam pressure can be a motivator for students to work harder and perform better. It can help them develop time management skills, improve their focus and concentration, and increase their self-discipline. Studies have shown that a moderate amount of pressure can lead to improved academic performance and higher test scores.
However, excessive pressure can have negative consequences on children's physical and mental health. Children who are under excessive pressure may experience symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and stress. They may also have difficulty sleeping, experience fatigue, and have a lack of appetite. These symptoms can lead to a decline in their academic performance and overall well-being.
Parents can play a critical role in helping their children to manage exam pressure. One of the most important things parents can do is to communicate with their children and understand their concerns. Parents can also provide emotional support and encouragement to their children during the exam period. They can also help their children to develop good study habits, such as setting up a study schedule, breaking up study sessions into manageable chunks, and taking breaks to rest and relax.
Parents can also help their children to maintain a positive attitude towards exams. They can remind their children that exams are just one part of their education and that there are many other opportunities for success in life. They can also help their children to set realistic goals for their academic performance and celebrate their achievements along the way.
However, Pressure is not just limited to academic pursuits. Pressure can come from many sources and can have both positive and negative effects regardless of the field or area of interest.
When a person is pursuing something they are truly passionate about, the pressure they feel is often self-motivated and can be a driving force for success. However, when a person is pressured to pursue something they are not interested in or do not have a natural inclination towards, it can lead to negative effects such as lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and burnout.
It is important for parents and caregivers to understand their children's interests and passions, and to encourage and support them in pursuing those interests. By doing so, they can help their children to develop a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their pursuits, leading to a more positive experience of pressure.
On the other hand, it is also important to understand that pressure is a natural part of life and is an inevitable part of achieving success in any field. Positive pressure can be a motivator and can help a person to push through challenges and overcome obstacles. It can also lead to personal growth and development.
To help maintain a balance of pressure, parents and caregivers can encourage their children to set realistic goals, and to break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. They can also provide support and guidance to help their children develop the skills and strategies they need to succeed. Additionally, they can encourage their children to take care of their physical and mental well-being, through adequate rest, healthy diet, and regular physical activity.
Bhagavad Gita teaches us the best way to handle any kind of pressure by performing one’s Karma (actions) without being attached to the fruits of those actions. By not being attached to the outcome, one can maintain equanimity in all situations & is able to perform their duty without feeling pressure or stress.

An Exhaustive Guide on How To Take a Mental Health Day Off
Tumblr media
Everyone deals with varying levels of stress. It can get challenging to function and manage everything if you have a lot on your plate. Research shows that mental health can significantly impact academic life.
Burnout can leave one feeling exhausted, irritable, empty, and unable to cope with daily life demands. It may lead to one experiencing a variety of mental and physical health symptoms as well. If one doesn’t address burnout and fatigue, it can make it very difficult for individuals to perform well in their daily lives and lead to declining productivity. Naturally, we all ask for leave for sick days for physical health, but the practice of taking leave for addressing our mental health is more of a grey area.
Have you taken a day off for your mental health?
Sometimes taking a mental health day — a day off that’s geared towards stress relief, self-work, and burnout prevention — is the best thing you can do for yourself and gain that lost energy back. One day might not solve serious underlying problems that lead to burnout, yet it can provide a much-needed break to rest and come back with greater energy levels and a less-stressed perspective.
Here are some tips that can help you take a mental health day and make the most out of your day off:
Deciding What You Need the Most
If one is fatigued, the body will be screaming that it needs to rest and sleep. It could be because of deadlines, or one just feels that he/she can’t face another day of hard work. It not only requires a day off but also requires some fun. However, if you’re feeling confused, you may not be as aware of your needs.
Take a minute and introspect: Would it benefit if you take some time off? Would a day off with friends recharge you? Do you need to spend some quality time with yourself alone? Or do you need a day of doing nothing?
How To Spend Your Mental Health Day
Just like you’d treat any sick day, indulge in the things that would make you feel better. It is a day for yourself. Don’t confuse it with a ‘running errands day.’ Design a mental health day for self-care so that you feel refreshed. Just make sure whatever is being done makes you feel more at ease and relaxed.
You can take time out and binge watch some Netflix series or movies, or indulge in your favourite hobby like drawing, painting, cooking, baking, reading a good book, or go out with friends for a coffee or dinner, spend time with family, go for a walk. You can also spend time decluttering, organizing and cleaning if that is therapeutic for you!
The key is to spend valuable time doing an activity that you find relaxing and rejuvenating.
Decide whether you need to make some fundamental changes
Sometimes, self-care is realising that you need to make changes to your lifestyle. Take the day off to restructure and sort things out. You won’t be able to eliminate all the ongoing stressors in a day. Still, you might be capable enough to make a significant change in various domains, which would create an enduring impact in the long term.
You can start to eliminate stress by:
Figuring out what is wrong by reflecting and analysing
Creating a list of things that drain energy and how changes can be brought into that sphere of life
Formulating to-do lists and planning in advance
Reflecting on all your strengths and coping mechanisms that you already have or need to develop
Things to Avoid on Your Mental Health Day
Spending your day in self-care does not mean spending time in loneliness. It is a day to help you refresh and recharge. Even if you want to stay home and sleep all day, make sure that it is for the right reasons and you are not just doing it to avoid people.
Things one should avoid:
Indulging in smoking or drinking
Overeating or binge eating junk and unhealthy foods
Ruminating or crying
Spend all day on the phone, reading posts on social media or memes
Being socially distan
It is essential to fill your Mental Health day with activities that boost your physical and mental wellness.
Reflect on the Day
Once you’ve spent the day on yourself, set aside some time to reflect on the day’s events, make it a habit to practice the GLAD technique.
GLAD is a gratitude exercise that will improve the mood and help you with an added dose of positivity. It strengthens one’s ability to be grateful for what life has in store for you. It is:
Gratitude
Learning
Achievement or accomplishment
Delight
It puts you in a better emotional place right before bed and prepares you for the next hectic day.
Don’t expect to be able to decide about all of this in a single go. If you want to make a radical change in your life, use the mental day off as a chance to do long-term planning, evaluation, and get ready to work on those changes for long-term impact. It may feel awkward at first to do things like spending a day with your loved ones or doing your hobby that you’d otherwise spend working. But these activities can go a long way toward helping you feel better, relaxed, and revived.
A mental health day can be beneficial on occasion, but in the current times, we must also strive to make mental health a priority every day. Gaining a detailed report into the areas you need to work on is a fundamental step on the journey of mental wellness. You can avail yourself of the option of self-management tools or book a session with a therapist for more support without compromising on your confidentiality.

having an honor student image: the fuckery
i remember being the obviously burnt out kid in my class. you know, just the vibe of one. i have always remembered having teachers excusing me out of class or when they're showing their gradebook to individual students in the middle of a school year or when a term is nearly ending, to talk to me about my grades and why my performance feels like im half-assing everything. i mean, they're right. i was half-assing everything when they notice it, but i wasn't doing it on purpose. i didn't want to half-ass everything. and i think that's why i remember those teachers so much because they took the time to have a private conversation wirh me about how they feel like i'm not doing my best or why i'm not trying.
it hurts. it hurts being a student who knows their limits and strengths, to be pulled into a private conversation with their teacher to talk about why i'm not putting effort into shit. it hurts because i know what i'm doing, but i didn't know it can be so obvious to certain educators. i mean, sure because i had the "honor student" vibe or whatever, but it feels so heartfelt when they ask you, "are you going through something? why is your grades declining?". i have always found that question infuriating because it tugs just the right strings from my heart.
so, given the fact that school isn't necessarily "hard" for me, why does it matter to my teachers who took the time to tell me that my grade isn't looking like they thought it would? i figured it's because those teachers, the ones that actually cared, saw how far off of a situation i am in. it's like it's so obvious im on edge? i apologize for rambling, but even if i do forget those teachers' names, the times they saved me from a total academic burn out just by asking me why my performance is declining, is a core memory for me. because who does that? to me, at least, i don't think i have ever gotten my parents talk to me about my academics because they just expect me to do okay. it was something i take pride in, but it definitely weighed so much that i don't think i can keep up with it now that i'm in college and it's not just general studies.
my academic success, or academic endeavors i guess, has always been an easy part of my life to go through. sure i was stressed, i cried over fucking math problems, got angry with bad groupmates, fought over answers for the quiz—i did all of those, of course. but once i get out of school, once i'm not a "student" anymore, i honestly don't care shit about school. i had a clear boundary regarding that. i've always hated doing school works at home because i can't focus. and i think that is what made me a more functional student because i had my a-game on always when it's about school. i think that's also one of the things that made my parents think i'm academically excelling. at least excelling to the point where i'm obviously not "working too hard" in school but still getting an easy passing grade and getting honors when given a lil push.
the academically gifted children. the honor student. the intellectual student. it is nice to hear, but it sucks when you know to yourself that you aren't living up to the name. to the title. it also sucks ASS that you're doing all of these shit in school just to be in the good side of your parents' book. while some other kid in your batch gets brand new shoes worth thousands of pesos, just because they didn't fail. just because they didn't fail. okay, hey, i wasn't complaining—but damn, i don't even get any benefits with getting honors while simultaneously being a "leader-worthy" student, as well as maintaining friendships and the hormonal, crippling rollercoaster that is a teenager's mental health.
*sigh* well, this is another messy rant—but hey, i know some of you have similar experiences like mine. i get it, it's so fucking hard to live life already and you see other people your age be out there enjoying theirs almost without worries. it sucks to realize that life is unfair and be on the unfortunate spectrum of the phrase. anyway! always try to prioritize yourself in everything. it's hard and it's sometimes messy—disregarding other people for your own benefit—but it's you who's important in your world, alright? someday, you'll find a way to live your life the way you want to. hopefully. because god knows i'm dying to fucking live mine LMAO
