Day One-hundred and thirty-four

Sam once again has his body sit up in his new prison. His arms move, stretching out, and it maintains the stretch until a sickening snap dislocates his shoulder with a tearing of muscle and bone. Looking disdainfully at such weak flesh failing it again, the thing that puppets him drags the shatter lives back together, and sets the wound ablaze, different tissues and fabrics welding back together until it appears as though no harm came to the shoulder. A yawn from the body.

Sixty-two percent.

Sam’s body once again stands against his will, stumbling its way towards the main chamber. The cold floor and bare feet gave no sensation to the true owner of the flesh now walking along it, though he made every attempt to fight the movements. Today he slowed it down. Good.

The body slowly crept its way onto a pedestal. A figure in a hooded cloak approached. Jacob. One of the thing’s most trusted advisors.

“Sir, I apologize. We have been unable to secure any additional maintenance materials for you. Our actions in securing you a body were hasty in our desperation, and now we have others watching us. Do not fret, we are rooting them out as we speak.”

“you better… jacob… this flesh grows… unwieldy…” The thing spoke in Sam’s stolen voice. It’s broken language and horrid pauses a byproduct of its hasty possession.

“I understand my lord. We are being as fast as we can. Please be patient, my merciful lord.”

“i will be as patient… as one of yours… could manage…”

The body stumbled back into motions again, slinking back into its room to attempt to recover. If Sam’s abilities bear fruit, he will not.

Day two-hundred and twenty-three.

“i… grow tired… of excuses… jacob… you have… delayed long enough…”

“Sir, please. We have been working as hard as we can. If we just get a bit more time we wil-“

“no… excuses… get it… done…”

Its pauses now contain gasps, as the bodies health is failing due to the withering connection. It attempts to move back into the room it sleeps in, but Sam refuses to move his right leg. So, its tumbles are slow, laborious.

Day three-hundred and sixty-five. One year of this.

It was bedridden now. Sam refused every movement. Every action. Everything, but talking. More of a taunt than a weakness.

“there IS… NO… TIME… JACOB…”

“Sir, please! Hold on for just a few more weeks, please!”

“…”

“…Sir?”

“…get… it… done…”

“Thank you, sir.”

Excellent.

Day three-hundred and sixty-six.

It didn’t even attempt to move the body this day. Instead, it attempted to invade Sam’s mindscape.

“Mortal, you must stop this meaningless ac-“

Then bastard was gripped by his throat by a reckless spirit.

“TAKE MY BODY?!?!” A bludgeon to the face. “TAKE MY FAMILY IN FRONT OF ME?!?!?!” Another heavy bludgeon to its damaged visage. “AND YOU DARE TRY AND TAKE MY DAMN MIND?!?!?!” A final blow broke the demon free from the grip of Sam’s instinctual mental construct of will, crumpled and broken, it tried its damnedest to plead for its continued status.

“Wait! Wait! We can make a deal! Some power, some control! We can compromise!”

“No.”

“P-Please!” He was weakened by the year of rebellion. He couldn’t fight back.

A cruel thought appeared. Both parties saw it. Its implications.

“N-no.”

“Yes.”

“NO!”

“YES.”

Sam slowly cornered the pathetic demon. He grabbed it by the shoulders, raised it high, and despite all the please for mercy, despite every struggle, Sam bit the demon on the shoulder, and tore the power right out of the demon’s mind. Its screams tasted better than power ever could. Sam’s body seized and shook as its possessor and owner finally ended their spat. When Jacob slammed the door open to save his master from the hunters of demons, he found no sins of break in, a destroyed bed, and a confidently standing body.

“…sir?”

“Oh don’t worry, your master is not going to bother us,” spoke Sam for the first time in a year. “Now stand still. Scream as loud as you can, too. I want to enjoy this.”

Day three-hundred and seventy-five.

The media has finally caught up with the cult. Chalked up to a pagan ritual, the ruled mass-murder/suicide had ended the lives of only three families. While low for such an apparently well-supplied cult, the region is thankful that the horrid people are now no longer a problem.

In other news, a new cryptid has sprung up within local folklore. A man, clad in red, with horrid shape daggers of teeth, and literally omnivorous tendencies. How awful…

“So that’s the first story, huh?” I ask the book before me.

It responds: ‘Y es. L 1ke it?’

“Sure. Anything else?”

‘L ter’

“Alright then…” I close the book and put it on a nearby chair. I look to the clock, notice it’s at an ungodly hour, and slink over to my bed, flip over the covers, and slide into the covers. Sarcastically, I say, “goodnight book.”

As I slid into unconsciousness, I could swear I heard a voice respond,

LOL! I should have known that Yuta is going to be something extra. Let’s do this! Yuta is a straight up dom in a relationship, there’s no way he would actually submit. On the other hand, his partner might not fully notice this as he’s quite a manipulative dom and it’s possible Yuta will make his lover think they are in charge while in fact everything is in Yuta’s hands completely. He might have goals set like having sex with 1000 people before Yuta’s 30th birthday or something like that. I know I make him sound like a monster but this is not everything he’s got in him. This is topic reading so it’s focused on this type of information but Yuta has his very bright sides as well. He might actually be one of the kindest human beings for real. People are complex. We all have light and shadow within. 😊

This reading was actually so fun I feel tempted to do Yuta's BDSM_Dom reading and his After Dark analysis but as you know I rarely have time for extra things so I'm not promising anything. 😂

Final Fantasy XVI - Martyrs, Individualism, and other Review-like Stuff (Spoilers!)

As one might suppose by the title, I've recently finished Final Fantasy XVI. Playing the game I had a lot of Thoughts, which isn't uncommon, and happened to encourage me to create this little blog for me to store these thoughts for posterity. Therefore, while I'm not yet sure who this introduction is even for, at least it's over. Onwards!

I will start this by getting the easy part out, which I have prior dubbed "the Review-like Stuff" - how "good" are the game's, y'know, things. I'll be pretty direct on this paragraph: visually and musically, the game is a whole meal. The scenarios look amazing, the big magical effects look, well, big and magical (in the best way! also very colorful). I just don't dig the character design all that much, personally, but it does deliver on the sort of realistic medieval fantasy air they set out to deliver - and hey, Jill's clothes actually look like functional female fighting clothes! Progress, I suppose. And the music, of course, delivers just as well - Masayoshi Soken, not content with putting out banger after banger for Final Fantasy XIV (the critically-acclaimed MMORPG, etc) decided to grace XVI with a series of adequately epic-sounding tracks, going as far as to reference musical motifs from prior entries in the series and toss us franchise fans some delicious treats. Yum.

Alright, onto the meat of what I actually wanted to write here - the story and gameplay. I'm gonna bundle both of these up because I think they're intertwined to an extent - or at least, some of the criticism I have about the gameplay is a direct product of how they wrote the story. But I suppose I might be putting the cart before the horses here so let's take a step back.

When playing FF XVI, you control a single character - Clive Rosfield, Ifrit's Dominant and certified Chosen One. You get other companions fighting alongside you here and there, and for most of it you're also accompanied by bestest of boys Torgal, but you never get to control any of them, they have no customization in terms of equipment, and actually the effect they have on gameplay is very minor - mostly making it less annoying to fight large hordes of enemies. So much so that you also never choose who's tagging along, they just join or leave the party automatically according to the story beat.

I recall being a bit disappointed when the previous entry in the franchise, XV, came out - because I had three buddies with me for the journey but I never got to play with them, only edit their equips and perform some dual techs with them during fights. XVI seemed to double down on this departure from party member control, straying even further from the molds of a party-oriented game and coming closer to the likes of Devil May Cry, the Witcher, both of the Nier games, and so on. I should note the influence of the first I cited is quite noticeable.

"Alas, Daka, it could not be helped!", I hear you say. "For Clive is one of only eight people in the world who can freely use magic, AND even if he parties up other Dominants, he'll drain their power eventually! So it can't be helped!". Well, voice in my head who is trying to predict an argument, that's still just a narrative choice they made. Had they decided to make it a party-oriented game, they could easily have written the story in a way that doesn't have Clive strip other Dominants of their power (and even that's kind of finnicky, because Jill is still added to the party for the DLC, far after Clive absorbed her Eikon), or just strip them of the power to Prime but leave their magical ability intact. Or have his fellow party members all be non-Dominants like Gav. Or have them share Clive's power through some sort of covenant, like if he could donate them the power of any Eikons he's not currently using (you do end up with five more Eikons than you can wield in combat, after all).

All this to say that they made a very conscious choice in making Clive's journey be so solitary - he wields the power and bears the burden for it, since being magical in this setting comes with a side effect of slowly turning into stone. Even when he has his (long overdue and very awkwardly paced) romantic development with Jill, she doesn't even try to dissuade him from bearing all of the burden himself - just reassured him that she believed in him and would be by his side to the end. Kind of bold words when you're speeding your new boyfriend along the route of becoming an Ifrit-shaped piece of rock, but it sort of cements the narrative that Clive is the very special Chosen One, and it's useless to try to relieve him of his burden - best to simply give him emotional support when necessary and help in whatever ways a mere mortal can.

Eventually, the narrative reveals that what's been killing the land all along (through a drying out of all life called the Blight) is the usage of magic itself. It's been happening ever since a different race discovered magic, ages ago, in what one may call an Original Sin (!) of sorts. Clive's battle is to, ironically, amass as much of the capacity to use magic without crystals into himself as possible, to then destroy humanity's creator, who both discovered magic and gave humans the means to wield it, and finally use all this accumulated power to destroy the ("sinful") practice of magic and die in the process, overwhelmed by the weight of this feat.

So our dear protagonist is, to recap, a Chosen One, born to be the physical vessel of a godlike being, and he sacrifices himself to cleanse humanity of the sins that are plaguing them. You know who else reportedly did that? That's right, baby: it's Jesus Christ.

Did I write several paragraphs just to arrive at this allegory? Perhaps. But pointing out the symbolic connections between Clive and ol' J.C. is important to eventually arrive at my main argument regarding FFXVI and its place in the franchise: it is very Western. It is prominently influenced by an occidental zeitgeist and ideology (which are indissociable from Christianity as a cultural system of rules and values). This manifests in the narrative itself, yes, which also has a big focus on defending "free will" and rejecting what sort of amounts to what one might describe as, uh, spiritual communism; but it also manifests in the gameplay itself, which is both emblematic of this narrative (via having you control a solitary martyr upon whose shoulders solely relies success or failure), but also more literally influenced by the West - with the gameplay mechanics and quest dialogue structure more closely resembling western action RPGs than any other game in the franchise.

My intent here was not to say FFXVI doesn't have any community-oriented themes (many sidequest chains are explicitly about that), but to point out the ways in which the tone and feel of the game reflect certain staple Western values - individuality most of all - beyond the simple fact of the game's European fantasy setting. I'm also not saying that's a bad thing, just that it is a thing, and these are some of the elaborations I arrived at when I tried to ask myself questions like "why does this feel the way it does?". I'm also very particular about not saying things like "this feels or doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game" because this is a franchise that loves nothing more than reinventing itself, and XVI was but the latest one to do just that. And for what it's worth, the game was great! I had a blast. I have my nitpicks about it but, hey, none of them was a dealbreaker.

...I do wanna have a party again for the next one though.

wwdits tarot meta masterpost

Hi! This is a masterpost of all my WWDITS tarot meta posts along with a little FAQ about the project!

All 22 Major Arcana (and a brief post about the Minor Arcana) are now complete and on tumblr. Each card has gotten a character or theme from the show, and I've used the themes of the tarot to delve into my thoughts about each one.

What is this project?

Well, I'm a giant nerd about both tarot and What We Do In The Shadows, so why not combine the two? I studied the history, ethnography, and popular interpretations of tarot when I was in college and still do readings for fun. Each post is about a different card from the Major Arcana, and will contain what I've chosen to represent it, my reasoning, some thoughts about the character/object in question, and ideas about card imagery.

A chronicle of the events after Julian's route, with my OC, Altheia.

And a continuation of a sort to my pre-route series, The Memories We Lost.

A nagging familiarity and a sense of deep connection had hung over Julian and Altheia since they met, and so discovering that she’d once been his apprentice was little surprise. But as they start to settle into their new life together, a discovery of a relic from their forgotten past, coupled with Julian's disturbing episodes of intense deja vu, leads Altheia to grow increasingly obsessed with recovering their memories. As she, Julian and Asra attempt to bring magic and science together to work on a solution, they find that navigating their past and future friendships and relationships is more complicated than they might have hoped, and that recovering memories so deeply locked away is not without risk for all of them.

This is my pre-route 7-part (!) series. Written as reader-insert in the first person POV of the apprentice whose pronouns and gender are never referenced, nor any descriptors.

Whispers of a new disease spreading throughout Vesuvia have led Dr Julian Devorak to recruit new apprentices to his increasingly busy clinic. Among them is a magician, who shows themselves to be as competent with medicine as they are with magic. They and Julian work well together, find comfort in each other, and fall into a relationship. But the relentless progression of the Red Plague threatens everything they have.

Plague, romance, a dash of humour, a sprinkling of spice, and a heap of angst, this is my headcanon of Julian and MC's back story.

I've tried to keep this in line with canon as much as possible. It came in to being as a one-shot that was meant to explain how Julian and MC fell for each so quickly in-game. And then it sort of... escalated into this... *gestures vaguely*

Reimagined Reminiscences

Mature (except Shelter, which is T), GN/M

Containing my first offerings into the Arcana fandom, this is a series of fics that slightly rewrite or extend certain scenes in the game. Either because I wanted more spice, or just... because. All except Hope of a Hanged Man are reader-insert, first person POV, with no pronouns, gender or descriptors mentioned.

Something Real - reimagines the first night the Apprentice spends together with Julian. A very submissive yet spicy Julian.

Just for Tonight - adds to (but doesn't rewrite) the Dock Talk paid scene. A 'Dock more-than-Talk', if you will. The Apprentice tries to change Julian's mind. If this doesn't succeed, nothing will.

Shelter - takes the place of the paid scene in Muriel's hut in Book IX Lost and Found. The Apprentice takes some time to show Julian some affection. Pure fluff, SFW.

Hope of a Hanged Man - a short piece imagining Julian's thoughts in the moments before his execution.

Affirmations - adds to the bath scene in XV The Devil. The Apprentice treats Julian, takes care of him, and delivers some affirmations - whether he's ready to hear them or not. Slightly NSFW but not explicit.

hey there! my name is mochi. I'm a 31-year old trans boy with a perfectly healthy obsession with NieR. I'm autistic, so you're probably going to see me go through phases of hyperfocusing on different media, and I also have special interests I will always reblog. I have two cats I love more than life itself, and I love playing video games.

I've finally given in to my obsession and I'm currently in the process of becoming a DrakeNieR blog full time. My other biggest interests are YuYu Hakusho, Final Fantasy XIV, and Hellsing, so there's gonna be tons of that on my blog, too. You'll see me post tons of other stuff, of course, but these are my primary interests.

Final Fantasy XVI - "Final Devil May Cry Fantasy" (PS5)

Disclaimer: At the time of writing this review, I have only played the game for four hours. Problems I have with the game may be addressed later on, and an update will be added if I feel the need to include any necessary information, such as my opinions on the development of the plot and characters.

The recent string of low-quality releases from modern game companies is astounding. While fantastic games like Octopath Traveler II and Hi-Fi Rush were released this year, titles with broken and boring gameplay like Forspoken, Redfall, and Gollum have appeared more than usual. This trend of low-quality Triple-A games could cause one to experience drastically low expectations for Final Fantasy XVI when its release date inevitably rolled around, but the game turned out great! This title utilizes the power of current-gen hardware to deliver an experience that looks and plays great, albeit with a few minor issues resulting from the developer’s focus on spectacle.

Final Fantasy XVI feels like a true next-gen title due to its graphical prowess. Everything feels vibrant with the utilization of the game’s various visual effects, as magic spells shine with wonderous splendor and environments feel intricate and alive. However, the game might relish in detail too much, as fights and duels feel overly gruesome with realistic blood splatters, blood-stained weapons, and similar phenomena. While impressively realistic, this excessive gore is far from necessary.

Additionally, the performance suffers from a mild hiccup due to its graphics. Transitions from cutscenes to gameplay are mildly noticeable when the game prioritizes graphical fidelity and downright jarring when the game focuses on achieving a consistent sixty FPS as the cutscenes can suddenly switch back to thirty FPS. Spider-Man: Miles Morales also provided settings that let the console direct its resources to either graphics or framerate, but any cutscene/gameplay transition issues- if they existed in the first place- were handled well enough so that one will not usually notice them. Seeing these issues present in a game three years older than a different title that dealt with them appropriately feels odd.

Final Fantasy XVI invests in its presentation to the extent that the plot and lore feel mildly neglected at points. While one can still understand what happens in the story, one can also notice how the focus on spectacle and presentation prevents the writing from explaining the finer details of the lore. These finer details still appear throughout the game, like how people casually use various forms of magic to perform everyday tasks. However, one can still become confused when attempting to understand plot elements like the differences in the various kingdoms and empires.

The developers seem to acknowledge this minor flaw by fixing it in a baffling way. During cutscenes, the player can pause the game and activate a feature known as “Active Time Lore”, which provides little blurbs of information about the current setting and characters involved in a cutscene. While this does relatively fix the issue to an extent, Active Time Lore also brings immersion to a screeching halt as one takes their time to quickly study up on the internal workings of the world.

Final Fantasy XVI continues interrupting the flow of gameplay with a barrage of tutorials. The developers bafflingly decided to go against modern game development design and frequently stop the game to inform the player of basic gameplay mechanics. The game does not need to stop in the middle of its tracks to explain an aspect of gameplay easily explainable with a prompt on the side of the screen.

Thankfully, the core of the gameplay mechanics reaches the same level of quality as the graphical fidelity does, despite the game doing its best to interrupt the experience. Final Fantasy XVI forgoes expanding on the gameplay of Final Fantasy XV and opts for the gameplay of the Devil May Cry (DMC) series. Combat focuses on chaining together attacks, magic spells, special attacks, and other offensive options gained from unlocking abilities in a progression system similar to DMC, but with a high fantasy twist and additional features like the ability to order the main character’s dog to attack certain enemies.

Encounters against stronger foes also provide additional combat options with the introduction of Cinematic Actions. These quicktime events mesh well with the gameplay as they ensure the player stays engaged at all times and keeps them on their toes as they must properly counter their foe’s flashy moves. However, the amount of time the player gets to react feels too lenient and can cause these moments to feel unrewarding. Lowering the reaction time would help these moments feel tense and allow the player to feel accomplished.

The various menus typically seen in an RPG also help encapsulate the stylish feeling of the gameplay by keeping everything streamlined and sleek. One can effortlessly parse through all the menus- including the settings/save game section- quickly and efficiently with a simple yet stylish design that does not clutter the UI with unneeded features. The game even includes 8-bit sprites of all the characters currently in the party, to add a bit of charm!

However, one cannot help but notice how the combat starts to become dull over time, despite the ways the game tries to keep encounters exciting. Devil May Cry works because the player constantly unlocks new abilities, weapons, and characters, encouraging- and sometimes forcing- the player to develop new strategies. Final Fantasy XVI’s combat- while still incredibly fun- frequently boils down to pulling off similar combos and dodging/parrying when appropriate.

A similar issue plagues the game’s progression, as a few locales come across as decisively linear. Linear design is not inherently harmful- and Final Fantasy XVI’s linear design comes nowhere close to horrendously linear games like Final Fantasy XIII- but the number of times the level design felt like nothing more than a bendy hallway felt disappointing. Thankfully, the game does try its best to disguise its linearity with secrets peppered throughout the levels, and a few open world-like areas.

All in all, I give Final Fantasy XVI an 8/10 and I would recommend it, but only with a relatively decent discount off of its current market price of $70.
