Steve just wanted to go back to Hopper’s cabin and recover enough from his death, concussion, and whatever the fuck else he had going on so things could get back to normal. So he could go back to just being the kid that worked at Scoops Ahoy that had a thing for the town’s nerdy metalhead. He wanted to go on a date with Eddie and hear Hopper giving him a shovel talk to keep him in line.

He didn’t want to have to blend in with the crowd to avoid being shot or hide from the Russians in the food court. He just wanted to be a normal teenager for a little while whose biggest worry was taking the boy that he liked on a date. Was that so much to ask?

Apparently so because right then he was anxiously curled up in the fetal position in some random fast food restaurant in Starcourt, trying desperately to silence his heavy breathing to avoid drawing the attention of the evil Russians. How was he supposed to protect his friends against the automatic rifles some of these guys were packing? He’d be fine, with the drugs out of his system, he’d come back. But Dustin, Robin, and Erica? One misplaced bullet and they’d be gone for good.

Him and Eleven had been practicing his telekinesis but he was still leagues away from being anywhere close to reaching the level of her powers. All he could do was partially crinkle a soda can, there was no way he could fling even one of these guys away in order to escape. Steve wasn’t even 100% certain that he could deflect a bullet under this kind of pressure.

They sat in silence with bated breath for what seemed like forever. They could hear the Russians walking around, some unintelligible dialogue being exchanged. It seemed that they were going to survive this… and then his foot twitched. It bumped a fallen steel tray and the sound was deafening in the silence. Shit, Steve had just killed his friends. They all heard the Russian’s footsteps come closer, waiting in dread to feel the pain of the bullet. But the man never fired. In place of the expected pops of gunfire, they heard a car alarm closely followed by the smash of metal and glass.

They waited a moment before peeking over the serving counter of the fast food joint. Steve didn’t see any Russians with their guns pointed at them. No, he saw El. Her arm still extended towards the car with a small stream of blood leaking from her nose. His little sister had saved their lives once again.

Steve ran ahead of his friends to meet the other half of the Party. He saw El climb down the escalator first and swept her up into a hug. “El!”

“Steve! I was worried. Are you… okay?” She asked him, her face smushed in his shoulder.

“Yeah kiddo, I’m fine. I promise, I’m all good.” He pulled back to smile at her reassuringly. She gave a small smile in response before Dustin was pushing Steve away from them and hugging her himself.

“You swung that thing like a Hot Wheel!” He laughed. Some of the Party members, specifically Jonathan and Nancy, were looking at Steve in confusion.

“Lucas?” Erica spoke.

“What are you doing here?” Lucas asked her, throwing his hands out to his sides.

“Ask them, it’s their fault!” She pointed at them and Steve couldn’t even defend himself.

“True yeah, that’s totally true. It’s absolutely our fault.”

“I don’t understand what happened to that car,” Robin said desperately, her brain was scrambling for a logical explanation but it wouldn’t find one.

Dustin ripped off the bandaid for her and said, “El has superpowers.”

“I’m sorry?” She asked.

Usually Steve would be nicer and more patient considering he’d reacted the same way just last year. But these were trying times and he didn’t have any more patience to spare. “Superpowers. She threw it with her mind. C’mon, catch up.”

“That’s El?” Erica asked, her eyes lighting up in recognition.

“Who’s El?” Robin squinted, still confused with the lackluster explanation she’d received.

“I’m sorry, who are you?” Nancy said in her passive-aggressive way that was condescendingly polite.

“I’m Robin, I work with Steve.”

“She cracked the top secret code,” Dustin defended her.

“Yeah which is how we found out about the Russians in the first place,” Steve added. He wasn’t going to let some twerp upstage him in sticking up for his new best friend.

“Russians? Wait, what Russians?” Jonathan asked confusedly.

“The Russians!” Steve wasn’t sure how he wasn’t understanding. There wasn’t a clearer way to say it.

“Those were Russians?” Max asked.

“Some of them,” Erica answered her, clearing absolutely nothing up for anyone.

“What are you talking about?” Lucas exasperatedly questioned.

“Did you hear our code red?” Dustin asked.

“Yeah but we couldn’t understand half of what you were saying,” Mike yelled at him.

“Goddamn low battery!”

“How many times do I have to tell you with the low battery?!” Steve yelled for emphasis. He’d reminded him so many times to carry extras!

“‘Kay, well everything worked out, didn’t it, Steve?” The little bastard had the nerve to sass him right now?

“‘Worked out’? We almost died!” Erica pointed out.

“Yeah, but we didn’t, did we?”

“We were pretty damn close…” Steve trailed off when he noticed Eleven walking away. Her steps were labored and her hands shook at her sides. He saw her bring her hands to her ears for a moment before she whimpered and fell to the ground. “El!”

He dropped to her side just a second before Mike did.

“My leg, my leg,” she whimpered. Steve could do little more than to squeeze her hand and pet her hair as some of the kids ran to get supplies.

Something in her leg was moving and just seeing it in his peripheral had Steve feeling nauseous. Even more so when Jonathan pierced her skin with a cooking knife. “Oh my god, I’m going to puke.”

Jonathan digging around with a knife wasn’t helping anything and El’s screaming just got louder.

“Stop, stop, I can do it” She turned pleading eyes to Steve but he just shook his head in panic. He couldn’t do it. His telekinetic powers still sucked ass and irrationally, he didn’t want the party to find out about them. They might be fine with El’s but his were so much more morbid, there was no way they’d support them. He felt awful as he watched determination fill El’s eyes. She didn’t deserve to have to perform rudimentary surgery on herself just because Steve was squeamish and hadn’t been practicing his powers as well as he should.

Nevertheless, with some more screams and the last of her energy, El pulled it from her leg with her powers and threw the disgusting, fleshy tidbit as far from the group as possible. It tried to wiggle away and made some disgusting screeches and squeaks as it moved. But it only scooched a few inches before a boot slammed down on it. Then, there was Hopper. He was holding a gun and glancing between El and Steve with varying ranges of horror.

“Jesus Christ, what’ve you kids gotten yourselves into this time?” He asked them, already exasperated with the situation despite not hearing any of it. He looked between El and Steve, his eyes focusing on her cut up leg and Steve’s purpling face. “What the hell?”

All of the kids rushed over each other in their descriptions. Steve zoned out of most of it. This was all too much, too fast. His mind was whirring and he almost felt like he was back on drugs. “It destroyed the cabin? Okay, wait. Just to be clear, this big fleshy spider thing that hurt El. It’s some sort of gigantic… weapon?”

“Yes,” Nancy answered curtly.

“But instead of like, screws and metal, the Mindflayer made its weapon with melted people,” Steve raised an eyebrow to ask if he was hearing that right.

“Yes, exactly!” Nancy nodded.

“Yeah, okay. I-yeah, I’m just making sure.” He’d gone through some shit but this might be the most disturbing thing he’d ever heard.

“Are we sure this thing is still out there, still alive?” Joyce asked them all.

“El beat the shit out of it but… yeah, it’s still alive,” Max told her regretfully.

“But if we close the gate again…” Will said.

“...and cut the brain off from it’s body,” Max continued.

“And kill it,” Lucas finished. “Theoretically.”

Steve was so fucking over this. He thought they were done with this once they beat the Russians. Now there was a fleshy monster killing people with mind powers? He sat on the bench with Robin, both of their minds melting together in solidarity. She’d joined at a bad time. The demogorgon and demodogs weren’t a walk in the park but something about this situation gave him a bad feeling. He didn’t like what was coming.

Steve let El and Hopper talk for a few minutes alone before he took her place. “Hey Hop.”

“What the hell, kid? I thought you were at work, how did you get roped into this?”

“I’m innocent! Dustin, man, he dragged me into this shit again. He came into Scoops with a Russian transmission so we decoded it, got stuck in an elevator, Robin and I got tortured by some Russians, I got killed again, and then we got really high and not in a good way. Where have you been?”

Hopper just looked at him blankly for a second before his whispers became furious. “You died again?! Goddammit Harrington! You have to be more careful, you can’t be so reckless with your life!”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I had any control over being literally tortured by Russians!” Steve whisper-yelled, flailing his hands around in his own defense.

“Why didn’t you come to me about the transmission? The next time you hear something like that, I need you to come to me!” Hopper said, pointing an accusing finger at him.

“Yes Hop, I'll come find you immediately the next time a kid and I intercept a secret Russian communication. Trust me, I’ve learned my lesson.”

Hopper sighed and wrapped a burly arm around his shoulders. “I know, kid. Stay strong, okay? I just need you to give Henderson a ride to his radio tower and then you can recover out of the danger zone. And absolutely no more dying on me, alright? My heart can’t take it, kid.”

“I’ll do my best, old man.”

Hopper scoffed in laughter and ruffled his hair, “alright smartass, get going. Stay safe and I’ll see you when this is over.”

“Sounds good Hop, stay safe.” With another hug in parting, Steve led the way to the Toddfather. The only good thing about this entire situation was getting to drive that beauty. They squabbled on the way there and Steve was able to tune out and let himself think.

It didn’t feel right to be leaving the rest of the Party there when there were so many chances of things going wrong. Since day one, he’d been the one to lay his life on the line to protect everyone. But now, he was driving away to play chauffeur. It just felt wrong and the pit in his stomach only grew larger for each mile further he drove.

When they did get to Cerebro at Weathertop, he saw the lights of town start to flicker and the Starcourt portion of the Party wasn’t answering the radio. Steve’s gut was telling him to get back there and it hadn’t steered him wrong yet. He started running to the car, he had to get them out of there.

“Where are you going?!” He only paused slightly to answer Erica’s question.

“To get them the hell out of there. Stay here, contact the others!” And then he was off once again. He barely noticed Robin running after him or hopping next to him in the car. They each stayed silent on the drive, far too aware of the looming danger that they were approaching.

Steve pressed on the gas pedal and didn’t lift up when he saw Billy’s camaro heading straight towards the Wheeler’s station wagon with the kids in it. He pressed down harder and didn’t stop until his world snapped black in the collision.

Steve’s eyes opened to a pitch black world. Shit, he was back in the blank space. While his aches and pains were gone and a feeling of safety blanketed him, there was an undercurrent of panic. Hopper told him not to die again and less than thirty minutes later, here he was… dead from an ill-conceived suicide run. And Robin! Was she okay? He hadn’t wanted her to come with him but there hadn’t been any time for words to be exchanged. He needed her to be alright, he needed his best friend.

He also needed to wake up. When he focused on finding his body in the blank space, he saw Jonathan, Nancy, and Robin lugging it from the front seat of the Toddfather into the trunk of the Station Wagon. He saw Robin crying where she cradled his head and saw the kids watching on in horror from their spots in the backseat. He needed to wake up now.

Steve focused all of his energy into touching his own corpse, of forcing his way back to consciousness. And… it worked. The blank space blurred for a second before his eyes were blinking open, staring directly into Robin’s. The whole car let out a sigh of relief. They hadn’t lost him after all.

For Steve, the rest of the night passed in a haze. He distantly remembered pain, fear, a particularly confusing moment of Dustin singing over the radio, and bright flashes of color. His body went on auto-pilot as his mind lagged behind. However, everything became disturbingly clear again when he was sat on the bumper of the ambulance outside of the still-smoking mall.

When he saw Joyce hugging Will, the bad feeling that was clogging this throat the entire night sparked to life. It was at that exact moment that he knew Hopper was dead. He would have come out with her to hug El, and Steve, the second he could. For him not to be there, he had to be dead.

A feeling of bitterness overcame him. What made Steve more deserving of this power than Hopper? Good, pure Hopper that took in two scared and lonely kids. Jim Hopper, the Chief of Police that risked his life to ensure that no one else would have to worry about the Upside Down. Hop, the guy that became his dad even though Steve was a bitch at least half the time.

Instead of a girl hugging her father, he saw El standing alone in the middle of the chaos. She was watching Joyce and Will embrace with tears in her eyes. She knew as well as he did that Hopper was gone.

Steve couldn’t let his little sister deal with her grief alone. He pulled his aching body up from where it sat on the bumper of the ambulance and forced himself over to comfort her. As soon as she caught eyes with him, El ran straight into his arms.

“El, it’s going to be okay.”

“I am sad, Seven. Hop… he is dead,” her tears wet his already ruined shirt and his streaked down his face to match.

“I know and that hurts. It’s okay to be sad, I’m sad too. But we still have each other, right?” He tried to reassure her but he could tell it wasn’t helping much.

“Steve, you are okay?” She asked into his chest.

“Yeah, I will be.” He nodded. He had to be.

Joyce came over to them then and shot a puzzled look at Steve before turning to El. “El, I’m so sorry about your dad but you can stay with us now, okay? We can go back to my house now.”

“But Steve?”

“Steve has to go back to his parents now,” she didn’t seem to notice his sudden pallor but El did. “He should go to the hospital too. Steve, you took some nasty hits so you should get checked out in the ER.”

“Yeah, I’ll go do that Mrs. Byers. El, go with her okay? I’ll see you in a few days, I’ll stop by.”

“No brother, I want to go with you! Hop would-” He cut her off with a gentle shake of his head.

“El, I have to go get checked out. Mrs. Byers is going to take you home and I’ll call later. Okay, I promise.”

“Promise.” El repeated, staring at him uneasily.

“Yeah, I promise. Go ahead.”

She was still reluctant to leave him but eventually, Joyce was able to pull her away with one arm around her and the other wrapped around Will.

Then, Steve was left alone. Despite what he said, he was not going to the hospital. He was pretty sure he had a concussion but it wasn’t like it could kill him. And he certainly wasn’t going back to the destroyed cabin that held too many bittersweet memories or his parents house that he hadn’t been to in months.

He still didn’t have his car keys so he walked. He walked all the way to the only place that he could now consider safe. The only place he could relax and feel loved. And as the trailer door opened to reveal Eddie Munson, Steve knew that he made the right choice.

There are a few very important things to remember when discussing whether Batman, or any other character, should appear in My Adventures with Superman:

1. We don't know how many seasons we're going to get. Placing all your money on something happening in season 5 is not the strongest gamble without recognizing that we might not even get a season 2

2. Cameos and team-ups can take a bunch of different sizes. However, it can be difficult to do a cameo of an important character without it seeming like foreshadowing for a larger plot

3. Cameos are a lot of fun and don't have to include the character themselves (consider the Vicky Vale clipping or the Amazo Tech billboard)

4. There are a lot of Golden/Silver/Bronze age characters in the Superman family that might get priority

These are my personal thoughts on them:

I really think My Adventures with Superman should focus solely on the Daily Planet team (Clark, Lois, Jimmy, and Perry). However, in later seasons especially, I'd love to see some Lana Lang and her uncle Professor Potter! They're such a major part of the Silver Age comics that MAWS draws clear inspirations from. However, I'd really hate to see that become a love triangle situation in any real way.

MAWS is also inspired by the 1940 radio show The Adventures of Superman which is so evident. I keep having to remind myself that in this version, Jimmy isn't a 14 year old paper boy. I am really excited to see if Flip Johnson and this new incarnation of the Newskid Newspaper takes on either a parallel role to their Newsboy Legion versions in the 70s or to Jimmy's role in the radio show.

As for Bruce/Batman, I know there's a lot of discussion on whether he should show up because he dominates all DC media and fandom spaces right now. Although I don't want him to become central to any plot whatsoever, I would absolutely love a Bruce Wayne cameo or easter egg.

If we do get a Batman & Superman team up down the line, it 100% needs to include Robin. Not immediately, but in a later season or two.

I don't want Supergirl to show up - not for a long time at least. She is very important to the Superman Family, however she has such separate origins and identities and relationships that it'd be very difficult to properly flesh her out while keeping her as a secondary character. (In comparison, other heroes from their own franchises such as Wonder Woman, Batman, etc, don't need to be fleshed out in MAWS. They could just appear as occasional support. Because Supergirl is of the Superman franchise, she would need to take up lots of space to get cemented as a character. There is a lot less allowance for her to have off-screen activities).

Honestly, all of the superpets could be super fun, but if I could only have one it'd be Krypto. Without Kara there, I don't think it makes sense to have Streaky/Supercat or Comet/Super-Horse either (also Comet's backstory is just really weird). Beppo/Supermonkey and Krypto/Superdog were primarily part of Clark's childhood adventures as Superboy. However, Krypto is a much bigger part of Superman's legacy and I 100% want to see him interacting with the MAWS team!

Lucy Lane, Lois' sister and Jimmy's love interest could easily show up. That said, I don't think they ever knew what to do with her despite being such a reoccurring character. So it'd be really interesting to see how they'd portray her!

Of course I had to go back and re-read the part in 'There's A Train Leaving Nightly...' that haunts me (because I'm a masochist and this hurts so good): It was too hard. There was too much to say and Robin wasn't saying anything, and Nancy couldn't be the one to say everything. She'd said everything already. She'd said it over and over again and it hadn't made any difference at all. They were still a thousand miles apart. It wasn't enough.

It was too hard.

She wished, and was disappointed in herself for wishing, that Robin would be asleep already when she got out of the bathroom. She wished that Robin would at least pretend to be asleep even just long enough for Nancy to sneak into the relative safety of her room. But Robin was still sitting there on the couch, wide awake, eyes hurt and accusing Nancy of something she was probably guilty of even if she had no idea what it was.

"Wake me up before you leave in the morning?" Nancy asked. Robin looked hopeful and Nancy looked away. "So I can lock up behind you?"

Robin looked away. "Yeah," she said. Bitter. Derisive. A snort, almost, as much as a word. "You got it, Nance."

"Are you mad at me?" Nancy asked. She felt herself wanting Robin to say yes so she would have an excuse to get mad too. She felt herself wanting Robin to say anything.

Robin only sighed. "No. I just... don't know what to do." She rubbed her hands over her face like maybe she was as tired as Nancy felt all the way to her bones. "To make you... To make us okay."

"You don't have to do anything," Nancy lied, because it was easier. "We're okay. We're fine. It's fine."

"Yeah," Robin nodded, and Nancy could tell she was lying too.

Eddie sits in the boat and eats a big amount of cereal as Dustin speaks.

"So we got, uh, some good news and some bad news" he says. "How do you prefer it?"

"Bad news first. Always" he says with his mouth full.

"All right. Bad news. We talked into the Hawkins PD dispatch with our Cerebro, and they're definitely looking for you. Also, they, uh.. they're pretty convinced you killed Chrissy." Dustin explains.

"Like, 100% kind of convinced" Max adds.

What the fuck..

Eddie's expression is a mix of defeat and fear and sadness all together.

"And the good news?" He tries.

"Your name hasn't gone public yet." Robin answers "but if we found out about you, it's a matter of time before others do. And once that gets out, everyone and their shallow-minded mother is gon a be gunning for you"

"Hunt the freak, right?" Eddie's voice breaks a bit.

"Exactly" Robin nods.

I glare at Robin for a split second before turning back to Eddie.

"You're not a freak, Eddie. We're gonna fix this" I tell him.

"Yeah exactly!" Dustin agrees "so we need to find Vecna, kill him, and prove your innocence."

Everyone nods.

"That's all, Dustin? That's all?" Eddie asks very sarcastically.

"Yeah, no, that's pretty much it." Dustin simply answers, not acknowledging the sarcasm.

"Listen, Eddie" Robin gets his attention "I know everything Dustin is saying sounds totally delusional, but we've actually been through this before..."

"Yeah I gave him the speech earlier" I say.

"Great, so bottom line is, collectively, I really feel we got this" She adds.

"Told you" I tell him.

"Yeah, well we usually rely on this girl who has super powers. But, uh, those went bye-bye, so.." Steve says.

"So we're technically in more of the-"

"Brainstorming phase"

"There's nothing to worry about" Dustin splutters

Steve scoffs a little, keeping a, what he thinks is, a reassuring smile on his face and Eddie just looks at them confused, until we hear the police sirens wailing.

"Tarp" Robin says to Eddie, indicating him to hide.

We all run to the window to see the police car passing by, plus and ambulance.

"They're heading..." I start.

"Yeah" Max nods.

"Let's go" Dustin suggests.

Everyone gathers their things I just stand there, expecting to stay with Eddie again when he gently touches my arms to get my attention.

"You should go" he tells me.

"Am I that shitty for a company?" I joke.

He half laughs.

"Not at all, but... they're looking for me and if they find me and you with me they might think you're helping 'the killer' and arrest you too. It's not fair" he explains.

"Well it's not fair for them to come after you either" I complain.

"Yeah, I know. But I don't want you to get in trouble because of me, m'lady." He tries to flirt to enlighten the mood, but ends up only making blush.

"I fought against demonic creatures from another dimension, I think I can handle some close-minded cops" I say.

"Just go. Please. Do me the favour?" He asks looking at me with pleading doe eyes.

I could stare into his eyes forever..

Shit.

I shake my head.

"I..."

"I'm gonna be fine. I got my food, I got my.. drinks I'm okay." He tells me "plus.. they need some brain in their party"

"Hey!"

"What's that supposed to mean"

Both Steve and Dustin exclaims.

I turn around to see them visibly offended before being dragged out by Robin and Max.

"See? They need a brain" Eddie insists with a chuckle.

"Are you sure?" I check.

"Positive, m'lady" he say making a small bow.

"Okay okay" I slightly laugh at the gesture "you better be careful here, my lord"

I start to walk backwards to the door.

"Always" he winks at me.

That catches me off guard and I almost tripp on my way out.

"Oh! Careful yourself, beautiful" he sweetly mocks.

I just wave at him and get out. Releasing a sigh of relief.

I look up at the group waiting by the car.

All with a big teasing grin on their faces.

"What?" I ask rolling my eyes.

"Oh nothing" Robin says, keeping the grin on her face, we all get in Steve's car.

"Mhmm" I look at her.

"Seems like you had no problems talking to him at all." Steve says.

"Just drive, will you?" I tell him.

We arrive at the Forest hills trailer park, in no time finding a very distraught Nancy already there.

What's she doing here? Investigating, probably. Very Nancy style... but what happened?

"So you're saying that this things that killed Fred and Chrissy, it's from the Upside Down?" Nancy asks.

"If the shoe fits" Steve confirmes.

"Our working theory is that he attacks with a spell or a curse. Now, whether or not he's doing the bidding of the Mind Flayer or just love killing teens, we don't know" Dustin explains.

"All we know is that... this one's is different. It feels different" I add.

"Doesn't make any sense." Nancy shakes her head.

"It's only a theory" Dustin specifies.

"No, Fred and Chrissy don't make sense" she points out "I mean, why them?"

"Wrong place?" I try.

"They were both at the game" Dustin points out.

"And near the trailer park" Max adds.

"We're at the trailer park" Steve mentions, visibly worried. "Should we maybe not be here?"

"There is something about this place" Nancy starts explaining "Fred started acting weird the second wr gor here"

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"He was scared, on edge, upset"

The last word catches Dustin's attention.

"Max said Chrissy was upset too"

"Yeah, but not here. She was crying in the bathroom at school" She specifies.

"Serial killer stalk their prey before they strike right?" Robin asks.

"Usually, yeah" I reply.

"So, maybe, Fred and Chrissy saw this Vecman-"

"Vecna"

"Dunno about you guys, but if I saw some freaky wizard monster, I would mention it to someone" Steve suggests.

"Yeah, but you already faced things like this before, and you know the people to mention this to... they don't. They would think they're crazy" I tell him sadly.

"But maybe there's one person they might've told this to.." Max suggests. "I saw Chrissy leaving ms. Kelly's office. Y/n's right. Not everyone know about this stuff like us so.. if they saw a monster they definitely wouldn't go to the police, because they'd never believe them, but they might go to their.."

"Their shrink." Robin finishes and Max nods.

"Let's talk to Ms. Kelly then. She must know something" Steve says.

So we get up and walk to Steve's car, but Nancy just keeps walking.

"Whoa whoa Nance! Nancy!" Steve calls her. "Where are you going?"

"Oh there's just something I wanna check on first" she answers simply. Without elaborating.

"Care to elaborate?" I ask.

"I don't wanna waste your time. It's a real shot in the dark." She says.

"Yeah, okay. Are you out of your mind?" Steve's getting agitated. "Flying solo with this Vecna creep on the lose? No, it's dangerous. You need... you need someone to.."

Nancy just raises her eyebrows at him.

I think Steve here is forgetting who are the only two people who can actually use a gun... and he's not one of them.

"Here, I'll stick with Nance all right? You guys, take the car, check out the shrink" he tosses his keys at Robin.

"I don't think you want me driving your car" Robin declines right away.

"Why?"

"I don't have a license!" She says.

"Why don't you have a license?" Steve asks, surprised.

"I'm poor"

"Then Y/n will." Steve states.

"Yeah, same problem Stevie" I tell him.

"I can drive" Max intervenes.

"No, never again. Please. Anybody but you. No" Steve immediately says.

Dustin looks at him, silently offering.

"Not a chance"

"Come on"

"All right, okay. This is stupid" Robin scoffs, grabbing a walkie from Dustin's backpack, and walks to Nancy, giving Steve his keys back. "I'll go with Nancy, unless you think we need you to protect us" She then teases and starts to walk to Nancy's car.

Nancy just shrugs and walks behind her.

"Be careful" Steve shouts.

"You're just gonna stand there and gawk?" Dustin teases him, with an amused smile on his face.

"Shut up"

"C'mon you two, let's go" I scold them and we all get in the car.

"Always the babysitter, always the goddamn babysitter" Steve complains.

I just laugh as we drive off.

When we arrive at Ms Kelly's House Max walk up to the front door.

We see her talking to Kelly and then walks in.

"Okay she's in" Steve mutters.

"I'm missing collarbones, not eyes" Dustin tells him with his usual sass.

"And now we wait" I say.

After a moment of peace, Dustin breaks the silence.

"So..? We're gonna talk about... it?" He asks Steve, but look at me. I think I know exactly what he's talking about and I try hold back a small smile.

"Uh? Sorry, talk about what?" Steve asks confused.

"Your temporary insanity earlier today" Dustin says and I let out a small laugh earning a confused glare from Steve

"He's talking about today when you basically throw yourself at Nancy" I tell him.

"Okay first of all, that not what happened" he starts defending himself.

"Pretty sure that's what happens, right?" He turns to me for approval and I nod "it was pretty public."

"Are you two implying I still have a thing for Nance?" He ask in an accusatory tone.

"No. We're not implying. We're stating, and as it relates to tour steadfast refusal to date Robin, it's pretty much the only logical explanation" Dustin states.

If he only knew..

"That's not the only one" Steve says quietly "and as for Nance, I was just trying to protect a friend."

Dustin has a very unconvinced smile on his face.

"A friend, Henderson. Okay?" Steve repeats firmly. I don't wanna find her in the morning with her eyes sucked out of her skull by this Vecna creep."

"You're like bright read in the face right now" Dustin chuckles.

"I'm not" Steve defends.

"Yeah you are" I disagree.

"I don't wanna talk about it. I'll punch you so hard your teeth will fall back out"

Oh he didn't..

"Whoa. Too far" Dustin says.

Steve look at him with sorry and regret written all over his face.

"Not cool. Sorry." He says.

"It's okay" Dustin tells him quietly.

They nod in understanding and make peace.

"So..?" Dustin says again, fully turning to me.

I raise an eyebrow at him, questioning.

"Everything good with Eddie?" Dusting asks, I can hear the teasing tone behind him.

"Yeah.."

"Yeah, right, you two were very comfortable talking to each other, uh?" Steve joins Dustin's teasing.

"I.. no, I mean.." I stutter.

"C'mon.. he does have a thing for you" Dustin tells me.

"He doesn't" I insist.

"He does, every day at lunch He always looks your way. Always asks about you.." Dustin tells me.

"You're just saying that" I roll my eyes.

"No I'm not" he chuckles "he really does. He also asked me and Mike how come we know someone as beautiful as you"

I blush at the thought of him thinking that I am beautiful, but that can't be true. I shake my head.

"It's impossible" I say with a dry laugh.

"Why?" Steve asks.

"Because no one could ever love me. Okay? I'm a fucking mess, no one would ever have the patience to.. to deal with someone like me" I snap, feeling my eyes tearing up and I blink the tears away.

"Y/n..." Steve starts.

"Here she comes" I tell the two boys.

Max runs back to the car, clearly agitated.

"Drive!" She says.

"What did she say?" Dustin asks.

"Nothing. Just drive" she answers.

"What do you mean nothing?"

"Nothing Steve just drive" she exclaims and Steve turn the car on and just drive off.

"I got her office's key. She wouldn't tell me nothing so I thought that there was a better place to find some answers" Max tells us as we far away from Ms Kelly's House.

"Illegal entry.. nice" I say sarcastically.

"Dustin? Dustin do you copy?"

We hear Lucas' voice coming from Dustin's radio, me and Max share a confused look.

"Lucas? Where the hell have you been?" Dustin asks, mad.

"Just listen. Are you guys looking for Eddie?" Lucas asks, his tone is agitated.. tense.

"We found him, no thanks to you." Dustin replies.

"You found him" Lucas is incredulous.

"He's at a boathouse on Coal Mill Road. Don't worry. He's safe." Dustin says to reassure his friend.

"You guys know he killed Chrissy, right?" Lucas says, with an almost smartass tone.

Is he for real? He should know better..

I loudly scoff.

"You serious?" I ask.

"That's bullshit" Dustin agrees. "Eddie tries to save Chrissy."

"Then why do all the cops say he did it?" He asks back.

Tired of their bickering, Max grabs the radio to talk to Lucas.

"Lucas, you're so behind it's ridiculous, okay? Just meet us at the school. We'll explain later"

"I.. I can't. I think some real bad shit's about to go down." He says.

"What are you talking about? What bad shit?" Max asks.

No answer.

"Lucas?"

"What happened?" I ask confused.

"No idea." Dustin answers.

Then an idea pops in my mind.

"Oh shit.." I mutter.

"What?" Max turns to me.

"The basketball team... Chrissy was Jason's girlfriend. Maybe he.. he wants revenge or some shit." I tell the others.

"Shit" Steve says.

The school at night time is a whole different atmosphere. Creepy and almost ghostly, especially when you're investigating about another dimension.

I feel a shiver going through my body... very creepy.

As we walk down the hallway to Ms Kelly's office Robin's voice can be heard clearly from the radio.

"Dustin, do you copy?" She asks, to gain pur attention.

"Yeah, I copy"

"So Nancy's a genius" Robin says.

They found something, great!

"Vecna's first victim date back all the way to 1959. Her shot in the dark was a bull's-eye." She tells us.

Holy shit.

"Okay, that's totally bonkers, but I can't really talk right now" Dustin replies.

"Wait. What are you doing?" Robin, obviously, asks.

"Breaking and entering school to retrieve confidential and extremely personal files" he says, simply, like it was nothing.

"Can you repeat that?"

"Just get over here, and soon" I say grabbing Dustin's radio.

Thanks to Max we manage to enter Ms Kelly's office, getting immediately to work at looking for Chrissy's file.

All while Dustin and Steve talks about... Hawkinsgate.

"Holy shit" Max exclaims.

"You found it?" I ask her getting closer.

"Yeah, and not just Chrissy's file. Fred was seeing Ms Kelly too.

"What?" We all look at her.

She then sit at the desk and starts to read Chrissy's file, looking for... literally anything at this point, that might help us.

I can sense she's getting agitated, but I can't understand why.

"Can I see Fred's file?" She then asks.

"Yeah" Steve hands her the file and she immediately opens it, almost like she knew exactly what to look for and then...

"Max?" I calm for her, but she doesn't answer.

I look at Steve, worried and confused.

"Max?" I try again.

No answer, again.

Hypothetical Rank Ups No. 82-85: Geronimo

This is gonna be a long one folks. Did the pendulum swing too far in the opposite direction? Maybe. Probably. Does he deserve all this? Yes. Definitely. And it's more fun this way anyhow.

New Passives:

Guardian’s Birthright (Nature) EX- -Apply 5% Special DEF [Hominidae] to self for each [Wild Beast] ally. -Increase DEF by 5% for all [Wild Beast] allies while on the field. -Apply Damage Cut by 150 to all [Wild Beast] allies.

First off we're gonna add a couple passives! This one is actually something I came up with for a Rider Geronimo Alter fanservant but I got a last second idea that made me decide to give a lower percentage version of it here as one last thing to give the guy you'll see just why later but for now all that need be said is it reflects both his connection to his homeland as a native american who makes heavy use of animal motifs, and his desire to protect the wilds of his homeland from invasion both old and new. Also, keep in mind both her and going forward that as previously stated I treat all "Demonic Beast" trait servants as "Wild Beast." I still don't know why those are two seperate things and it's dumb that they are when Demonic is its own trait. Surely any Demonic Beast is just a servant with both the Demonic and Wild Beast traits...?

Guerrilla Expertise (Nature) A++ -65% chance to inflict Poison, Curse, and Burn when attacking (100dmg/turn, 3 turns; calculated once) -Increase your Critical Star Drop Rate by 20% when field is [Forest]. -Increase your Critical Chance Resist by 20% when field is [Forest]. -Increase your Critical Strength by 20% when field is [Forest].

This one's a lot more directly relevant to Geronimo caster, a manifestation of his status as a legendary guerilla combatant on his own turf. When the forest is near forest he gets a huge buf in the form of a combination of Independent Action, Presence Concealment, and Camoflauge skills, all of which have a self-demonstrable connection to the concept of guerilla warfare. Given his status as a low hit-count caster though, the only one of these that fits his niche under normal circumstances is really the crit resistance. What is always useful though is the triple DOT that, again, should be very self-demonstrating in how they fit the idea of guerilla warfare. What makes these valuable isn't the damage they deal, but rather the ability to potentially activate effects for other servants without relying on active skills, with a trade off of being much less certain to active of course. So, while this requires Geronimo himself to use his often subpart command cards instead of a DPS's, it can set up servants like Robin or Yang who deal immensely more damage against poisoned and burned enemies, or it can use up Debuff Immune charges, or active anti-debuff effects like Arjuna Alter's S1, or even proc certain CE's and command codes that grant special attack against specific DOTs. Between ALL of these things, the ability to potentially inflict all kinds of DOTs when normal attacking can go from an utterly worthless damage boost to an extremely valuable utility....again, all granted you're able to get the use of of Geronimo's command cards to begin with.

Alright, now onto the active skills!

Bloody Devil B -> Until I am the Last

Increase own Buster Card effectiveness (1 turn). Decrease DEF against Critical Attack for an enemy when attacking normally for 3 turns (2 turns). Decrease own Critical Star Gather Rate by 100% (3 turns). Apply Guts to yourself (1 time; Stacks with CE effects). If there are no other allies: - Apply Guts to self (Revives with 1 HP; Stacks with other Guts, triggers first) (1 time, 2 turns). - Inflict Terror status on all enemies (3 turns). [Reduce cooldown by 1 to 6/5/4 turns. Critical Def debuff scales from 5-15%. Guts scales from 500- 1500HP. Terror activation chance scales from 20-50%]

The manifestation of Geronimo's status as the sole native american representative in Chaldea and one of the most famous figures of one of history's most mistreated cultures, Geronimo will gladly help his allies but is just as much if not more to be feared when cornered alone. First off though, about the skill name...Bloody Devil is honestly a really cool name and the lore behind it is awesome as well, but like…I’m 95% sure referring to the only Native American servant as a devil has some REALLY bad connotations? For several reasons? So I’m changing it to one of those unranked-quote-style skill names, one that specifically refers to both Geronimo’s character as a resolute defender, and referring to his infamous dying words: "I should have never surrendered. I should have fought until I was the last man alive."

Skill wise: His buster buff remains unchanged, but it wont be much use given the nature of his kit, just as it was before. Instead, geronimo's relatively low caster crit gather gets dropped to zero, ensuring he doesn't take up any stars from his allies. While this would otherwise be counterintuitive for a caster whose only real strength is his high attack and card stims trust me when it say this is better than trying to get buster crits out of geronimo - in fact his own attacks will instead power up ally crits by inflicts a small Crit Def debuff on anyone he hits for the next couple of turns, which means no matter how bad his standard cards may end up being, they'll still contribute to the team as whole through his subterfuge. Lastly in teamfights is the most important part, being a stacking guts on an insanely low cooldown. While the HP recovered from it is minimal, the sheer frequency immediately gives geronimo an INCREDIBLE survival tool at his disposal, especially when you factor in the combined total healing he provides by the end of this. He won't be a boss killer in any sense during teamfights, but he'll almost certainly be sticking around to help his allies throughout them.

But that brings us to the gimmick, what happens when Geronimo outlasts everyone else? Well that's when he makes his last stand. Even as a caster, he is proficient in all forms of close-range and 1 on 1 combat, and will fight until he is covered in enemy and own blood alike. The sheer sight of him tearing through bodies strikes terror into his enemies, and his iron will can briefly survive even more grievous wounds. With enough stun-luck and the right CE + master support, Geronimo could even loop this skill thanks to its low cooldown when solo, making him viable as an absolute last-ditch solo servant despite his lack of raw DPS other solo servants rely on, especially when the solo deck means you could get some great DPS with the right support thanks to the on-attack debuff stacking up to near 2 turns of almost Billy level crit buffing, IF you can find a way to generate the stars for it of course...

Shamanism B -> Di-Yin B-

Increase own Arts Card effectiveness (2^ turns). Increase Buff Success Rate for all allies (5 turns). Increase HP Recovery Amount for all allies (5 turns). [HP Recovery Up scales from 15-35%, Buff Success Rate scales from 5-25%]

This is gonna remain Geronimo's main self stim, to which end the duration is increase by 1 turn for at least a bit more flexibility, and apply a niche support fitting his spiritual healer status. while the buff success rate doesn't even come close to the optimal 40% increase, it makes up for that by being AOE and extremely lengthy in duration, pairing well with the likes of Tesla or making up for not fully leveling the likes of Miyu or Lakshmi. Likewise, the healing up is low relatively speaking but just like the Buff Success rate long enough to potentially loop at max level, effectively boosting all healing on the party by a 3rd if used that way, and pairing well with the likes on Bunyan's own hypothetical rank ups as well as Geronimo's own NP. While neither of these effects can directly benefit the party, they fit the status of a Spiritual healer much more, bringing vitality and fervor that raises the effectiveness of more explicit support.

Side note: I like to imagine this would have the lore of: “Normally the skill’s rank would be lower due to his mysticism being much less significant to the legend of Geronimo, but by manifesting as a caster the skill gets a considerable boost.”

As for the skill name itself: from what I know, “Shaman” and “Medicine Man” are terms criticized by actual Native Americans, so I changed it to what I know is at least an actual Apache word, Di-Yin (It could be written as "Diyin" though? I’m not a linguist and it’s times like these I don’t exactly have much to work with beyond Google-) which is, again as far as I can tell, the proper term for what European settlers would later dub the stereotypical “Medicine Man” and anyways if it wasn’t clear yet I REALLY don’t like this line I’m treading on twice now so let’s just say it means something like “Spiritual Healer” or “Religious Commander” and move on, okay?!

Guardian Beast B -> Guardian Beast (Coyote) C++

Apply [Familiar: Spirit Guide] buff to an ally with the following effects: -Increase Quick Card effectiveness for an ally^ (3 times, 3 turns). - - While this buff is active, apply [Wild Animal] trait to the selected ally. Remove one Debuff from one ally. [Reduce cooldown by 1 to 6/5/4]

Thinking of making "Familiar" a sort of (potentially reoccurring) category of buff, things like spirit guides and spirit animals or summons characters use, whose buffs are directly tied to their continued presence. In this case we'd have the cunning coyote of Native American myth. From what I know the most famous myths about Coyote are Navajo, but I know the idea of a Coyote god is also part of Apache customs so I feel comfortable giving it to Geronimo, especially given his NP and artworks. Coyote will boost the quick effectiveness of whoever they are paired with and grant that servant the Wild Beast trait as well, tying all the way back into that passive I gave at the start! It also means even when solo, Geronimo can intentionally not use quick cards to effectively have a 10% defense buff and 150 damage cut for 3 out of every 4 turns. Add on a bit of spiritual protection, IE remove the most recent Debuff Jason style, and voila! A nice little utility-support skill for other characters whose quick cards are actually worth using.

Oh wait did I say little? I meant game changing. Because I did I NOT decrease the quick scaling at all. Yes, I do think it's fair, because what makes Skadi's rune truly cracked is specifically the Crit buff on it that's wholly absent here. What it does mean regardless, though, is that you can effectively substitute Geronimo for a skadi when quick looping (though it will still require order change to make up for the lack of raw battery). And yes, I do feel comfortable giving him that on top of everything else, because 1. looping should absolutely not be locked behind exclusive SSRs, and 2. Paracelsus already exists with his insane 50% NP gain up that isn't restricted to 3 hits NOT is it restricted to card type. So yeah I'm fine with this. (and 3. Not like any of this is gonna happen so let's have fun with it) Though I will say it's up to you if you think a better more balanced version would be 2 times, 5 turns on the quick buff with a max buff of 60% and a 7/6/5 turn cooldown instead.

Tsago Degi Naleya B+ -> B+++

Deals damage to all enemies.^ Reduces critical attack chance by 20% for 3 turns. Apply [Forest] field effect to self (5 turns). Apply [Sunlight] field effect to self (5 turns). Recovers party's HP.^ Increases party's debuff resistance for 3 turns.^ [Healing doubled to 2000/2500/3000/3500/4000, Debuff Resistance scaling increased to 20/35/50/65/80%. Hit count increased from 1 to 2.]

The myth Geronimo's NP is meant to re-enact is one wherein the Sun chases Coyote for stealing his tobacco across the earth, scorching everywhere Coyote did not protect. Quite simple compared to everything we've covered already. Oh, and of course, boosting the hit count to 2. It's not much, but ffs it's something. His early game base NP gain is just high enough that it grants SOME degree of refund at least if used against a full wave of 3 enemies, even if its still barely anything...

Ok but like can we hear the Byler rant 👀👀👀 asking for a friend(the friend is me)

I basically explained to her why I think Byler is gonna be endgame in season 5, and why that would be the only outcome that'd make sense, since there are many things and scenes in the show that can't be explained otherwise 🧐

She's not nearly as invested in this as I am, but she agreed with me about everything because she's smart like that 😎

As for the rant in itself, it's all stuff I've already discussed on this blog. Like I mentioned the character arcs of Mike, Will and El, and how Byler would be the only logical way to complete each one of them in a satisfying way. And then I mentioned the airport reunion scene, the kiss in season 3 in front of the closet, the van scene, the conversation on top of the car, Mike throwing away El's letters, the difference in the way the scenes with Byler and Melvin are blocked and shot, Will being in all Melvin scenes in season 4 while Byler are alone all the time, the stark contrast between their fights in season 3, Mike 100% projecting whenever he says shit like: “We're friends! We're friends!” unprompted 🧐

Then I mentioned the Dawson's Creek parallel, the music in the background of the Melvin kiss in season 3 (the same of Robin's coming out), the closet imagery surrounding Mike, etc etc...

Also I might've said they will need to check in with me after season 5 drops because if things don't go well they will see me on the news.

But that won't happen.

Nightwing #100 - A great artist showcase that Taylor manages to stay mostly out of the way of. No real narrative developments worth mentioning, the Titans shilling and obvious setup for a new Taylor written Titans ongoing just makes me roll my eyes but hey - whatever pries Taylor off of Jon I'm all in favor of.

World's Finest #11 - Solid ending to an arc that surprised me. Got thoughts to share on Magog now that it's over that I'll write up in a different post, but I will say I didn't expect him and Clark to part on such amicable terms. Of course Waid canonized the depower chamber from Superman II, should have seen that coming. Ending is definitely setting up some kind of follow up, be that in a future arc or in a spinoff mini like how Lazarus Planet is resolving the Nezha plotline.

Stargirl #3 - Continues to be great, guessing the Foster Father is Per Degaton. Eventually I'm sure Courtney will join the JSA book, only question is how many of these legacies will too.

One Bad Day: Bane - After Dark Crisis shit the bed Williamson needed this book to come out to remind me why I was on board for his Superman. It's solid and I love the twist that the "one bad day" for Bane actually ends up being the day he broke Batman. He peaked then and there, and never achieved anything as noteworthy ever again, something Bane himself recognizes and regrets. By the end he's become a quasi-Batman figure himself, taking in and mentoring a young man in an attempt to find a new purpose in life. Very much feels like an abbreviated DKR for Bane which is fitting given his status as the Evil Batman.

Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton -

Dreamer: Fine. Mostly just served as the story to explain what the hell is going on if you didn't bother to read Batman vs. Robin or the Alpha issue.

Jon - Wow actual chemistry between Jon and someone else! Almost forgot what that felt like after a year of utter blandness between Jon and Jay. God just break those two up already and put Jon with Ash, it would at least be amusing to see Jon dating someone who pushes back at his preaching.

Mercy - Good, I liked the flashes we get of her relationship with Lex and I approve of her becoming more like her animated Young Justice counterpart. Not quite a cyborg, more like Alex Mercer in terms of powerset.

Power Girl - Beautiful art, and Leah seems to have a good handle on Karen's voice. If she's getting telepathy I think she needs to give up one of the powers she already has in exchange. Looking forward to the backup.

The New Champion of Shazam #4 - Ending was a bit rushed but on the whole this was an enjoyable mini that left me feeling very optimistic about MAWS. I'm not thrilled that they seem to just want to have Mary go by "Shazam" too, come on surely we can come up with a better code name for her than just having her use Billy's. Especially since not only is he coming back, but his book is going by Shazam! Have Mary go by "Captain Shazam" if DC/Campbell is that opposed to a gendered name for her, it pays homage to Billy's original name and let's her be "Shazam" without literally having the same name as him.

Immortal X-Men #10 - Holy fuck I haven't been this eager for the follow-up since HoX/PoX. Gillen nails Xavier, there's no question that he is a good man, but his goodness doesn't stop him from taking actions that leave you unsettled. And that cliffhanger... looks like we're seeing the beginning of the end for resurrections.

Invincible Iron Man #2 - It's fine. I have no clue what is going on with Riri since I have never read anything with her in it, but she comes across as Tony's equal in arrogance alongside intellect.

Strange #10 - I was not familiar at all with Clea before this mini but now consider me a Clea fan. Great ending and i can't wait to see where McKay takes these two next. I've seen articles hyping up the new Strange series coming as being about Stephen as a wife guy, but brethren, it's Clea who is the husband gal. Look at that adorable psycho itching to slaughter an entire building this issue, but shows mercy because she loves her husband that much! Awwwww!

second of all, it does seem like traditional media viewing (🤢) could lead to people thinking eddie likes chrissy based on their interaction in the audition tape. it could 100% be just a normal, non-romantic interaction, but i can already see the shipping. poor eddie if this is the case tho because chrissy will definitely be dying. (rip queen.) the one big flaw is that season 4 works best if he is gay. i know we haven't seen season 4, but this is the truth regardless. sorry not sorry.

i tHINK if we see him flirt with a girl it won't be nancy because she just doesn't seem like his type. we'll see him with chrissy or maybe he'd hit on robin and get awkwardly rejected. nancy hits that sweet spot where she was really only popular because of steve but also not cool in the geeky/counter-popularity way, so i don't think she'd draw his attention as a metalhead dnd geek or whatever. there's neither enough similarity nor enough difference. (normcore nancy. we have to stan.)
