Winter in Gotham
Based off of this fic, by @catxsnow
Word Count: 1285
Notes: Hi! So this is a fic based off of the one linked above so please read it cause its amazing. This is my first fic so please go easy on me lol. This was my interpretation of how I think Bruce would react.
It was a normal December day in Gotham, crime running rampant and batman taking down criminals helping to make the city safe. Winter was in full swing with snow covering the ground. Upon a building were Batman and his team as if it weren’t close to freezing in the city. That is where the problem starts. A father and his children fighting crime in the middle of dead winter wearing basically spandex.
You were not a mother to any of his children, but you were Bruce Wayne’s current and longtime girlfriend. Later on, after months of dating, you stumbled upon her bleeding lover the night after a long fight with Poison Ivy. Soon in the wake of that moment, you came to Wayne manor to help whenever she could, including to be Bruce’s nurse and lodestar.
You were in the Batcave waiting for Bruce to come home, hopefully without injuries that would need stitches. After what seems like hours the sound of the Batmobile hits your ears. Bruce is the first one to greet you, he comes over to your anxious body at the computer and leans over to kiss you, and tells you that the patrol went smoothly. You call out to Damian to check and make sure that he didn’t get injured. Damian rolls his eye like he usually does when you check on him and he says that he’s fine.
All of Bruce’s kids had grown on you and you always made sure to check on all of them since you knew how Bruce was with affection. It was your way of letting the kids know that you truly loved their father and loved them along with Bruce. One of the things you did was help Alfred out a tad by sewing the suits after a night out fighting crime. Tonight, was one of those nights. Even though no one was hurt, Dick’s suit had a visible tear that you could fix up in minutes.
-Dick sweetie when you change give me your suit and I’ll sew it up for you so that you have it fixed for tomorrow's patrol.
Dick changed and handed over his suit to you.
-Thanks Y/N. I tried to stitch up my suit once and it was terrible.
-Oh. Alfred and I are both aware. That’s why I restitched them.
As you are about to start sewing you notice the thin material in your hands. Emphasis on thin. As you felt the material all you could think of was how cold it was in Gotham. It is a city in the Northeast after all. You got up and checked the other kid's suits and it hit you that all of the boy’s suits are thin. You thought to yourself, how on earth did they stay warm in these things. If you went outside you had to have layers on otherwise you would freeze and yet the boys are walking around all night in these? You decide to ask Bruce since he is their father so of course, he should know why the suits aren’t thicker or better insulated.
-Bruce... Bruce why are the boy's suits so thin?
-They need to be able to move freely. You’ve seen how flexible Dick is.
- Yes. But it’s winter in the north. They should be insulated and give the boys warmth.
-They’ve never had an issue with the cold.
- You are their father! You should know well enough that they don’t have to say that have an issue.
Dick is the first one to speak up.
-It’s not a problem really. We’re used to the cold and it made us better heroes.
- It is a problem, Dick. You are children and you shouldn’t have had to tell your father that you were cold while he was standing in a fully insulated bodysuit.
Bruce looks at his kids standing around him in their suits and starts to think back to patrols in the winter just to try to remember seeing any signs of them being cold. Sure, they took hot showers after they got back but that was normal for them. But maybe they took such hot showers to get warm…
-What about the girls? When you had their suits made did, they have insulation? or are they thin so that they could move around freely like the boys?
-The suits are all made out of the same polymer material. There aren’t any differences unless they specifically design then that way.
-Wow Bruce. So, all these years you really haven’t noticed that you’re letting your own kids freeze?
Bruce starts to think more while the panic starts to rise in him.
- I didn’t think they were cold. if I did, I would’ve changed their suits. I didn’t do it on purpose.
Bruce looks at you and sees the disappointment in your eyes. He looks at his kids and realizes that maybe he should have paid more attention. Everything starts to piece together like a puzzle before his own eyes. All the nights where after a night on patrol one of the kids would head to the showers and fog up the changing room. Or nights where Bruce would check on one of the kids and find them enveloped in blankets. They weren’t just cold. No, they were freezing. All because he never noticed the shivering or chattering of teeth next to him. How could he have been so neglectful… He was supposed to help these kids that’s why he agreed to train them as Robin so that they could be better than he was. Yet, he let them endure the brutal Gotham winters in spandex.
-I’m sorry. I should have realized that all of you were cold and I should have made sure that all of your suits were well insulated.
The kids all looked at him in surprise as they never thought their father never knew that they were cold.
Jason speaks first,
-You mean you didn’t know we were cold?
-No. Of course not. If I knew you were all cold, I would have done something. But I’m sorry that I didn’t know.
The kids all share looks. Some are in disbelief while others like Jason are still deciding if they trust that Bruce isn’t still testing them.
After some tense silence filled minutes you decide to restart the conversation.
-So, since you didn’t know that they were cold and since you do now. What are you going to do about it?
-Well, I will have all of their suits redesigned for winter weather that has better insulation. That way they have a cold-weather suit and a warmer weather suit.
-I think they should also have warmer capes so that they can use them as blankets like you do Bruce. And maybe they should also have weighted blankets waiting for them here when they finish patrol.
-Whatever they need to be warm they can have. Alfred will you order weighted blankets and hand warmers immediately. Along with whatever you see fit to have everyone staying warm.
-Of course, sir I will do that now.
The weighted blankets came in later that week along with hand warmers, packs of gloves, beanies, and all types of blankets that were available. After that night Bruce made sure that the kids were warm and not suffering in the cold. You of course paid extra attention to the kids to make sure they were okay and made sure that they would bundle up into little hero cocoons after patrol. But the kids were okay after that. At least when it came to being cold. Because we all know there are plenty of issues in this family…
Hope y'all liked it. Feel free to reblog too!

AWAE 2x9 rewatch: thoughts and reactions
Tumblr media
This review is dedicated to Dalila Bela, who turns 19 today. Happy birthday!
After a long wait, there she is at last - Muriel Stacy, decorating her new home with potato stamps. What a lovely way to show she is a kindred spirit. She’s basically like an older Anne.
Marilla and Anne utter the same words upon passing Miss Stacy, who is cycling in the opposite direction at top speed - ‘My heavens!’ - except their intonations are so different. Marilla is shocked at the sight of the unconventional-looking stranger, while Anne is in awe of her, and especially the fact that she’s wearing trousers. I don’t think the women of Avonlea, be they progressive mothers or not, won’t be so fascinated with her, though.
And again, Miss Stacy acts exactly like an older Anne, going on and on about potatoes and tardiness and motorbikes before she’s even caught a breath. I can’t wait for Anne to finally meet her. And that concludes the cold open.
I don’t care what Prissy and Josie, or their mothers, say about Miss Stacy- I’m with Anne on this one. They shouldn’t judge their new teacher before they’ve met her up close. She’ll warm her way into their hearts, I’m sure. I actually know it for a fact.
I simply cannot believe Billy brought a gun to school and is openly proclaiming he’s about to kill an animal, a living being, with it. And it’s not just any animal - it’s the fox, Anne’s fox. What has it done to him that he’s so personally violent towards it?
Again, Gilbert alone is the voice of reason (unlike season 3 Gilbert, who is the most confused individual I’ve ever seen and has the eyebrows to prove it). ‘There’s no fox here, so how about you put the gun away?’ It’s as if he speaks for me.
Who does Billy think he is, calling his teacher ‘little lady’? He’s lucky she’s not Phillips, otherwise he wouldn’t get away with such disrespectful behaviour.
Once again Anne uses the exact same words as someone else, but with a different intonation. Prim and proper Tillie’s ‘Oh my goodness!’ is one of disapproval (which she’s not to blame for, that’s probably just what her parents have taught her), while Anne’s is an expression of pure admiration and fascination. [Side note: Let’s put things into perspective, though - what would you think if your new teacher showed up to school with no bra on, on her first day at that? I don’t really know what to think of corsets anymore, so I’m not sure how to take this. You tell me.]
What, now Matthew and Jerry, two of my favourite AWAE men, want to catch the fox too? I understand it’s stealing people’s chickens, but hey, a fox must eat too, and it’s not like it can get its food in another way.
What’s happening to Bash? Is farm life not his speed? I’m worried about him, I hope he’s alright.
For this next scene, the introductions, I’ll insert a note from when I first watched this episode. I notice I’ve been doing that a lot lately, but well, it seems I’ve got quite a lot of first impression notes on this season written down, so why not make them public now, here where it’s appropriate? Here goes:
And, just as I was fascinated, things got dramatically bad. Anne wouldn’t stop saying quite private things about everyone who spoke, and Miss Stacy reprimanded her for spreading gossip, resulting in her being unable to come up with words to describe herself (the method used for introductions was everyone would use words starting with their initials to describe themselves. I really wanted to know what Anne would have said about herself, as nobody else seemed to struggle much with the exercise (although I myself always do when asked to do it).
Alright, now I’d like to add something to this. When Ruby describes herself as ‘romantic’ and looked for a G word for ‘Gillis’, I could swear she thought of a certain young man right to her left - heck, she even looked at him before quickly blurting out ‘girl’. Well, yeah, she is a girl. But she’s also defining herself through Gilbert too much. I hope she knows how much potential she has beyond him. Besides, he only has eyes for Anne. I wish we’d got another season so we could see how far Ruby and Moody go. I liked them, but we saw too little of them together. #renewannewithane
Ok, but... it was like Miss Stacy just finished Anne’s sentence. ‘Ruby has a crush on...’ ‘Gilbert Blythe?’ Well, yes, but that’s not what we’re talking about. See, I’m noticing details I did not deem significant enough to note down the first time around. This is what rewatches are for.
Rachel Lynde needs Marilla’s help. That’s a first. Oh, well, it’s rumours, what else. She’s against Miss Stacy. I really don’t like her right now.
No, seriously, what is happening to Bash?
Of course, what the mothers of Avonlea fail to see is that, female or not, trousers or nor, corset or not, Miss Stacy is much more capable of teaching the young minds of Avonlea school than her predecessor. Or at least she’s much more willing to educate them properly. Of course she’ll tutor Gilbert. And Anne will soon find her way into her good graces. I hope. Nay, I know it.
‘Appalling, stupid, clueless...’ this is what I hoped wouldn’t happen, but it happened anyway. Now Anne is beating herself up for the scrape she got into by complete accident. Gosh, I hope someone can fix this.
From my old notes:  And again, Cole knows how to fix things, and he does so, brilliantly I would say. Also, with the way he goes out into the nature, raises his hands and shouts out “Come to me, Muse!”, I can totally see him being a pagan... and who’s to say he’s not? I mean, Anne has the makings of one too, remember the Beltane ritual in season 3?
Rachel’s only job seems to be to stick her nose in other people’s business. She has no right to go around asking about Muriel’s marital status and whether she wants to be an old maid. But as anyone who’s watched the full series knows, this will be carried over into season 3.
Seriously, Rachel right now reminds me of Anne earlier with all the gossip, and I see now why she (Anne) made such a bad impression on Miss Stacy. Unfortunately, she (Miss Stacy) cannot assign Rachel Lynde an essay.
Anne’s mind is all taken over by the fox... so much that she’s fallen asleep over her papers... and now, disaster after disaster lead to a small fire, which grows into a bigger fire. If Anne’s essay burns in it, I’ll literally cry. I know a thing or two about lost work. Why, half of this very post I had to write a second time after my computer decided to restart the page with the unsaved draft open. But hey, this is not about me.
So I guess they’ve figuratively and literally forced Miss Stacy into a corset. That’s sad. But I see she’s not giving up on her unique identity.
Oh, great, now the found brothers are fighting. I guess it turns out Bash’s problem is he’s inexperienced in farming and he needs help, but Gilbert is pursuing his own future now and doesn’t seem to care all that much. I feel bad for Bash. But we know Gilbert will stay at least another year and Bash will figure farming out by the time he has to leave.
Ah, I see Anne is feigning sickness so as not to go back to Miss Stacy after yesterday’s fiasco. Well, I’d do the same if I were her, but I’m not quite sure that’s the best solution to the problem at hand. Marilla’s suggestion seems much better to me. Going together so Anne has someone to vouch for her... reasonable and concerned like a true mother.
I see Bash is trying to figure out horse-riding on his own. It looks tough. But he can manage it.
It’s a shame Jerry won’t help Anne with the trap... but well, he was promised good money, and his large family is so poor... the ends sort of justify the means here. Still, Matthew is not in the right to plan on skinning the fox for money.
Gosh, things are heating up between Shirbert. Anne seems to be all the more determined to find and develop her vocation now that Gilbert is working on his. And he doesn’t seem to care much about her feelings right now, being so busy studying and all. But I wonder how this whole thing really makes him feel.
Hey, there are the potato light bulbs! The first science lessons Miss Stacy teaches the class. And they never forget it. How inspiring!
Hey, I just realised something. In her ramble in the cold open, Miss Stacy mentioned that you can use potatoes for a lot of purposes... well, here’s the second one she demonstrates in this episode. Stamps and... lighting a bulb.
Marilla, who took up Miss Stacy’s offer to stay and observe, seems to be a new supporter of the young teacher. See? If people only gave her a chance and saw what she does and how she does it, she might soon be a hit in town. But no, some choose to condemn her instead, as if she’s ever done them wrong. Just like the fox. Except the fox stole some chickens. Miss Stacy is perfectly innocent.
And... poor clumsy Moody had to ruin everything just as Rachel and the ProgressiveTM mothers came in. Too bad. But hey, it’s him who recalled this very first lesson later on when they were graduating, isn’t it?
Hey, Bash has gone to see Mary. Things are getting serious. I guess.
Alas, the mothers are not too pleased with how the lesson turned out. Luckily, Marilla was there to see the whole thing from beginning to end and can support Miss Stacy in front of the rest of the women. And it seems Gilbert and Anne are ready to step in and defend her as well. On their second day with her. That speaks volumes.
Oh, so he’s visiting Mary to talk about Gilbert. But he also talks about himself and his idea to go deep into farming. His story is truly an inspiring one. And also, he’s staying with Mary for supper. As I said, things are getting serious.
Anne decided to show Miss Stacy the story clubhouse... nice. But she’s made another blunder in doing so. She’s forgotten Cole is hiding there from his parents. And now they’ll force him into farming again... as my younger self said when I saw this for the first time, ‘this episode is one of the most devastatingly dramatic ones of this series – ever. What a way to lead up to the season finale’. I think that says it all.
Ah, yes, nobody told Gilbert that Bash wouldn’t be home for supper this evening. Too bad... now he’ll think Bash has run away on him. Meanwhile, Bash is having a good time with Mary. But there’s no way for Gilbert to know that. How unfortunate.
One shot, one gunshot and... wait, it seems the fox has not been killed yet. But the poor clubhouse... Billy is the worst person in this series, hands down. I can’t even. I’m crying. Real tears. Right now.
See, Anne’s blunder was not telling Miss Stacy about Cole. After all, she swore her to secrecy. But it was a blunder nonetheless because Miss Stacy takes her duty as a teacher more seriously than her promise to Anne. If only she’d known the full story... Cole might have been saved.
Miss Stacy riding with Harmon Andrews... I wonder what Rachel, aka the Avonlea yellow pages, will make of that.
‘Sometimes you just have to use your imagination.’ This is powerful because it comes from Marilla. Also, perhaps this is the hidden sense of humour that L.M.Montgomery talked about in the book, which I’m currently rereading.
I can’t, I just can’t. Now Cole feels betrayed by Anne, and Anne is devastated about the clubhouse.... and the women of Avonlea are against Miss Stacy, and Matthew disappointed Anne... can nobody be happy in this episode? It’s truly tragical and devastating. I should not have opted for rewatching it right before going to bed, on a school night at that. How will I sleep now?
Gosh, Cole really has had it now. I’m not saying Billy Andrews did not deserve it (he did and he does), but violence is never the answer. Still, I guess it’s justified now. Too bad it will probably lead to even more trouble for Cole. See, even he’s scared of what he’s done. He surely didn’t mean for it to go that far. And to the creators - this is no way to end an episode.
Let’s sum up: we meet Miss Stacy; intonation matters; the fox is in danger; Billy the bully has a weapon now - how bad can things get?; Bash struggles with farming; Anne accidentally makes a bad impression on a kindred spirit; appalling, stupid, clueless; ‘Come to me, Muse!’; Rachel Lynde sticks her nose into things that are not her business - what else is new; potato light bulbs; Bash visits Mary; the clubhouse is destroyed; Anne accidentally betrays Cole, leading to dramatic consequences; a disastrous ending to a devastating episode.

His Stupidly Tall Self - Kim Mingyu
Tumblr media
[fluff full-length] - 2247 words
[summary] - highschool!au, his pov, song inspiration I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran/Justin Bieber (doesn’t really connect to the story, but the key and beat suits its pace), featuring some of SVT, super fluffy
[author’s note] I’m trying a playful style - I hope you like it! Also, I typed “look” intending this to be under 500 words... so, uh, yeah. That happened. Also, I know the reader is assumed to be short — tbh, as a short girl, it was my default. Super sorry, my tall friends! I love you and hope you still can enjoy this? The reader’s height isn’t that prominent.
[thanks for reading! your support means the world to me, always!]
Look.
Being the tallest boy in class had its perks; Mingyu wouldn’t argue with that. In fact, his height was how he first talked to Y/N. Shorter than him, his crush had asked him for help reaching a basket of supplies on a too-tall shelf.
He’d remembered feeling awed, wondering if this was some alternate universe where everything was cliche and perfect and just right.
Even two years after that first contact, he could vividly recall the flush that had run through his entire top half when you’d met his eyes. Smiled. And told him that you appreciated him.
Yes, you’d said it jokingly.
Yes, it wasn’t that deep.
But Mingyu had nurtured that exchange like a gardener fussing over their, well, garden. (So he wasn’t that great with metaphors.)
But he was great with pine trees...
Or, rather... You know...
Pining.
Yipee.
Tumblr media
Back to his height.
Although it certainly brought him some perks, it generally caused him more pain than help. Physical pain, in that he spent too many trips down the stairs a little faster than intended... with a little less foot-to-step contact than desired, too. (Sometimes this would happen when he planned to travel up rather than down, too. Thinking about that, his ribs throbbed in sympathy.)
And emotional pain, too.
Exhibit A: When he let his friends — a terrible, thirteen man group which eternally abused Mingyu with jokes about his height and personality in general (really, Mingyu didn’t know why he kept sitting with them for lunch) — choose his Freshman-year Halloween outfit. A giraffe. Really.
Exhibit B: When Mingyu had magically been paired up with you during Sophomore year for an English assignment... Only for you to hesitantly ask him if you could request to change partners, because there was this new kid, and your mom was friends with the parents, and you had the same interests... Of course, Mingyu agreed, falling in love with you slightly more. (The stupid, lovable compassion! he later moaned as he vented to Jeonghan.) And at a larger distance. (Okay, so height wasn’t really in the equation here, except for the fact that you were the same height as your partner, which really hurt his heart when you performed a reenactment of Titanic’s pose and he knew, knew he would be a better Jack).
(So he needed to vent about it, years later. Problem?)
Exhibit C: When against all odds, Mingyu and you ended up at the same table for some school function where there happened to be a dance floor. He’d found enough courage to ask you to dance the last slow jam with him, and nearly screeched when you easily agreed. As he led you to the floor, he decided that he would have lived a full life as long as he didn’t step on your toes during the four minutes — he’d die kiss-less and dateless, true... but he’d die fulfilled.
He didn’t step on your toes, and he felt like this could, just maybe, if he was lucky, just possibly could turn romantic (Ed Sheeran worked miracles) —
Then you burst out giggling.
“It’s just!” You heaved a breath. “It’s just that!” Mingyu’s eyes nearly fell out of their sockets as you gripped his forearms for support. “You’re so tall — I feel like I’m dancing with your bowtie more than you!”
Well.
He had felt like crying.
His twelve abusers had found the entire event hilarious, but Mingyu most certainly disagreed.
The next time he ran into you, you’d casually caught his wrist as he began to walk away from what had been a stilted, though perfectly lovely, exchange. (He’d moved past the teasing and near-crying, heading back to school with his best foot forward. [Neither foot was the best foot, but that was beside the point.])
“Hey, Mingyu,” you had said, somewhat redundantly because your hand on his wrist said plenty.
Mingyu was nearly sweating (read: sweating buckets) and feeling very impressed by your hand-eye coordination (read: Mingyu’s arms were too long and ever-changing for him to romantically slam you against a wall, casually catch your hair in his fingers, or anything actually useful for his life, such as, in this case, catching his wrist and staring up at him with thoughtful eyes).
Yeah. His blood pressure was in a rough place.
“Are you listening?” you’d asked.
“Uh,” was all he could say, eyes dropping to your lips as though he could look back into the last few minutes to understand your speech. “I am so, so sorry.”
“Exactly.” At this moment, he doubted his entire existence. What did that mean? Was it sass? Anger? Disgust? Rejection? “That is exactly what I’m telling you: I am very sorry for not being a kind person when we danced. I thought you’d find my shortness funny — but Seungkwan told me how it really made you feel.”
Sincerity!!! it dawned on him.
“I didn’t mean to laugh at you. In fact, I think your height is very attractive.”
His voice was hoarse the next day from screaming into his pillow.
Emotional and physical pain all in one (yipee!) thanks to his height.
Tumblr media
“I’m confessing to her today,” Mingyu told his reflection. “Today. Before three. I’m doing it. For real.”
He ran his hand over his carefully selected shirt, looking for wrinkles, and reassessed his appearance for the thousandth time.
Senior year.
Exhibit D wouldn’t get to happen (really, though, he’d passed Z long, long ago).
At lunch, his now smaller group was all support and gentle teasing. Now one of the hyungs, Mingyu received much less abuse. (He repeated that with enthusiasm whenever Vernon or Seungkwan, or both, stumbled into the spotlight instead.)
“Just... be romantic,” Vernon suggested.
“What does that even mean?” scoffed Seungkwan. He sat up straighter, mimicking their self-important History teacher. “Go for genuine. All the girls like how you’re a human puppy. Exploit that.”
“Maybe have flowers?” offered Chan.
“We’re at school, our dear maknae.” Seungkwan squinted at the rest of his table, disappointment dripping in his tone. “We don’t want ‘Gyu suspended before he can confess. You’d think I’m the only reasonable one.”
Minghao raised an eyebrow at that, although he wisely kept quiet.
The silence stretched out until Vernon piped up again.
“Be poetic, hyung. You aren’t bad at speaking unless you’re nervous. So, just... Don’t be nervous and pour out your feels, y’know?”
Seungkwan beamed at Vernon.
“Finally someone else contributes useful advice.”
Tumblr media
You’re kind.
You’re beautiful.
I’ve loved you since you asked me to get a basket down for you.
All too generic, and even creepy.
You, a highly attractive person, called me attractive, which really means the world to me.
You can do it all — laugh recklessly and fix any damage right after.
I think you actually complimented my giraffe costume way back? It’s blurry, but I think that happened. As a gangly freshman, that meant a ton.
Mingyu banged his head on his desk, only to realize he was sitting in math class and... now everyone was looking at him. He loved that. Totally.
No! No! No! he was screeching internally.
“The brain’s just struggling a little bit,” he was saying externally. “You know how with laptops, how you just slam it shut and it usually works after that? Just...”
From in front of him, you had turned around to watch him, looking at him dare-he-say... fondly?
“Um,” he choked. He looked away from your lips, curved upwards, and met the teacher’s amused but tired eyes. “Sorry. Reboot complete. Loading... and good. I’m back.”
Hearing you laugh, he melted into his seat with a wide, satisfied grin.
Embarrassment aside, he’d do that all over again if you’d watch him like that again.
Then a note slid onto his desk.
Are you saying you’re as smart as a computer? ;)
His brain needed to shut down and restart after staring at your handwritten wink face.
NOOO! he furiously scribbled back. I’m just I I would never imagine to be so intelligent.
As he waited for your response, if he would get one, he winced at his wording. That alone was judge-worthy.
Don’t sell yourself short. Sell yourself worth your full, lovely height!!! xD
Tumblr media
You’re someone who makes me feel like I’m worth something, he writes in tiny letters — a draft and guide for himself to use very, very soon. You’re the type of person I’d want with me, stranded on an island. You’d say something funny, then meaningful, then sweet, then magic us off the island because you’re amazing like that. I take that back, because I don’t want to expect the impossible from you as your boyfriend. I’d want you with me, and I hope you’d want me with you, too.
When I’m with you, I don’t care that I’m 187 cm of hopeless energy. All I care about is making you smile because I’m already smiling. Although, I take that back, too, because whenever we’re near each other, my friends have told me that we both smile a lot.
So I change this to, when I’m with you, I know we make each other happy. And I want you to be mine. And I would die if you’d let me be yours. I want to just do life with you — the ordinary, domestic things, the cute dates, the casual ones, the couple’s outfits, the whatever you picture as us being us (just... in love).
So, Y/N Y/L/N, be mine?
Tumblr media
By the time he asked you to wait for him after school, he had already internalized a neater version of what was essentially his love letter to you.
As he snuck up behind you, covered your eyes and cheesily asked, “Guess who?” he’d been mentally reciting the first sentence of the second paragraph.
While you rattled off a list of idols and turned around to beam at him, his mind echoed unhelpfully, You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful.
“So what’s up?” you asked.
He inhaled deeply and dove in.
“You’re someone who I —”
WAY OFF, KIM MINGYU, he thought, mentally hearing Seungkwan tsk sadly.
You’re beautiful.
I don’t care if the height difference is weird and makes slow dancing awkward. I can get a bowtie with my face on it, if it helps.
I want you to be mine.
He took another deep breath, thankful that you hadn’t tried to speak. (In fact, your heart was racing as you watched him chew on his lip and cast glances at you like a driver might steal glances at the sunset on a commute home.)
Mingyu let the flood out:
“I want you to don’t care if you’re beautiful, mine!!!”
As he blurted the last word, Mingyu decided that he truly, really, unequivocally wanted to die. Right then and there, satisfied or not, kiss-less or not.
Just... let it be immediate.
Humiliation followed his stupidly tall self everywhere, so why not let it rest with him in the grave?
Just end it all.
“Hey, I’m getting worried about your health over here,” he distantly heard you laugh. Laughs weren’t elegant things, but he swore that if he could see it, it would be all his favorite colors mixed in a perfect arrangement.
“Can you at least open your eyes?”
Your voice was soft this time, and he complied. (He hadn’t realized he’d squeezed them shut to begin with.)
“I like you, too,” you murmured.
His stomach? Electrocuted.
His eyes? Eternally lost in yours like a cat in a newly found box.
His heart? Approximately the same heat as one of those 200,000 K stars.
His cheeks? Gently covered by a certain pair of hands.
“Can you please look at me?”
Mingyu realized that he’d been vacantly staring over your head.
“Yeah — uh, sure.”
He felt a tingle run through him when he found you nearly chest to chest with him, your hands slowly leading his face closer to yours.
“Mingyu, I’m going to kiss you, because I like you very, very much, too. And because you’re someone who makes me feel like I’m worth something, too.” Mingyu’s heart soared as you said this, eyes staring into his, blush on your cheeks. “But I’ll need you to lean down for me.”
As he complied, eyes drifting closed, he realized three things:
A. Without his height, he wouldn’t have this perfect, oh so perfect, view of your face — even the slightest change in either of your heights would be an indescribable loss.
B. Sure, he was gangly and uncoordinated, but he still got the beautiful girl who liked him as much as he liked her.
As he pulled away from the soft brush of lips, straightening and checking his pockets, he blurted C out loud.
“You found my rough draft, didn’t you?”
The brightest, most carefree grin spread over your features, and Mingyu felt himself fall deeper in love as you nodded like it weren’t a big deal.
Balanced on your toes, you slung your arms around his like you were about to slow dance. He smiled softly; you smiled right back at him.
“When I picture us just being us, but in love... I picture this,” you told him.
Then another playful grin spread over your features. “And by ‘this,’ I mean all 187 cm of you being a cutie.” Mingyu felt his cheeks heat up, but you weren’t finished. “Also, as I’m now yours, it’s good to finally know the exact height! It’ll help with the couple’s outfits!”

Their Girlfriend isn’t Close to Her Family Anymore// Got7
Request: heyyy could I plz request a got7 scenario where their girlfriend isn’t close to their family anymore and he supports her? Thanks you 🙏🏻🙏🏻💙💙
Pair: Got7 x Reader
Genre: Angsty, slight fluff
Warnings: Oof. Mentions of alcoholism, abuse, abandonment, and death. Nothing too crazy though. Also, it’s long. As fuck.
Words: 4.46k
(A/N: First off, yay! I’m back! Second, I wasn’t sure if anon wanted the whole group or one member so I just did them all so it’s like a scenario/reaction kinda thing.)
Mark
The day was fairly silent as you and Mark continued to clean around your apartment. Well, you were cleaning as Mark sat on your sofa watching television, when, suddenly, your phone began to ring from the coffee table in front of him. You trusted one another enough to go through each other’s phones and even answer phone calls. So, when he saw the words ‘Mother’ appear, he immediately answered, partially from his instincts but mainly because this would be the first time he’s met her, even if it wasn’t in person.
“Hello? (Y/n)?” The woman’s voice was shocked yet relieved, causing him to smile at the way she said your name in a loving way.
“I’m Mark, her boyfriend.”
“B-boyfriend?” Her pained voice confused him. She was your mother, surely you told her about him, right?
“Mark! Who is it?” You asked, not taking your eyes off the pan you were scrubbing profusely as he approached you, placing the phone to your ear with a small, “it’s your mom”.
In that moment, you felt sick to your stomach, your glove covered hands dropping the scouring pad as you turned and pressed the end call button bitterly, hanging up without another word before returning to your previous chore.
Mark had never seen you like this. Your cheeks puffed out and lips pursed together angrily as you took your frustrations out on the poor pan that was overly clean, almost being restored to its original silver color.
“Why did you hang up on her?” He finally asked, watching you carefully as you rinsed the cooking sheet and place it onto the nearby drying rack.
“My mother and I aren’t close.” You said bluntly, hoping that’d be the end of the discussion as you tossed the gloves onto the side of the sink, trying to walk by without making eye contact with Mark.
“Maybe you would be if you actually talked with her.”
You froze, a bit hurt and angry at how true his words were. But how can you explain that you could never rebuild a relationship with the woman that left you to raise yourself since you were 5? That the only times you ever saw her, she was drunk and angry or passed out from a bender? That even once she got her life together, you could never see her as anything other than an alcoholic mess?
“Not everyone can be best friends with their parents, Mark. Some of us don’t get the privilege to say we even have parents. And if I’ve been doing just fine for the past twenty years without her, why do I suddenly have to be the bigger person just because she feels guilty for the shit she caused?”
You hadn’t realized your eyes were glossed over, burning as you took in a shaky breath to keep yourself together. Mark felt bad for not knowing these things about you, assuming it was just the distance keeping you from visiting home, having you insist on being with him and his family every holiday or just staying at your apartment alone rather than being with her. The worse part being that, whether you saw her again or continued to ignore her, it’d hurt you.
You don’t flinch at the sudden feeling of arms around you, your head instantly pressing into the side of Mark’s neck as he held onto you.
“I’m sorry, (Y/nickname). But I think you should talk to her, just for some closure. Whether you see her again or not is your choice and I promise I won’t bother you about it anymore.”
Jaebum
Jaebum held onto your hand and you sniffled loudly, choking back tears as you stood over her coffin. The woman before you was your grandmother, yet she raised you since the day you were born, never once treating you any differently just because she technically wasn’t your mother. But she was the only mother you’ve ever known. Your father had passed not long after your first meeting, and the day you met your real mother, you made sure it was your last. She didn’t even deserve the title of a parent.
Even with all the problems you faced, all the times you cried over the years of pain and conflict you felt from your family’s dysfunction, Jaebum stood by you and listened, being understanding and compassionate when you needed him most.
He sighed sadly and leaned forward to place a small kiss to the frail, lifeless body, pulling back just enough to see her greyish features.
“Thank you for raising an amazing daughter.” He spoke lowly before standing to level with you, wrapping an arm around your shoulders to guide you to your seats when, suddenly, a loud scream was heard, your heads turning to the entrance in shock.
“We told you, you aren’t allowed here!”
“I’m here to see my fucking mother. Get off of me!” You could feel your grimace grow as you watched (Y/Mother/N) push through the line of people coming to view your grandmother’s body, her feet stopping her just a few steps away from the casket but, intentionally, right in front of you.
“(Y/n),” She breathed, opening her arms to embrace you but you just took a step back.
You weren’t sure how to react. Part of you wanted to turn away and ignore her, but part of you wanted to punch her and whoever told her the location of the funeral. It wasn’t that she didn’t have the right to see her mother one last time, it was the fact this was the first time in years she had thought to do so.
“You have five seconds to leave or I swear I’m calling the cops.” You growled, Jaebum lacing your fingers together to remind you that he was still there and that her presence shouldn’t and won’t affect you.
“I just wanted to see her. And I wanted to make sure you were alrigh-“ You flinched at the way she reached out to touch your hair, your hand instinctively reaching up to slap it away.
“I’m alright. I have been ever since you abandoned me.”
“I didn’t abandon you. I had to figure myself out and get my life together. I was always going to come back for you, (Y/nickname), and I did.”
“I wish you never came back.” You admitted, your face stoic as you watched hurt flash over her features.
“And your five seconds are up. Leave.” Without another word, you turned and let Jaebum silently drag you to your seats, his eyes staring at you with concern as everyone tried to return to their mourning, despite the interruption.
A stray tear rolled down your cheek, your hand practically squeezing Jaebum’s as you stared ahead. He couldn’t tell if it was still your grandmother’s death or your mother’s arrival upsetting you, but he knew it wasn’t the right time to bother you on it. Instead, he brought your hand to his lips, placing a soft kiss to it before relaxing at the small sigh you released, your head resting onto his shoulder as you continued to mourn the loss of both your mothers.
Jackson
“I’m nervous.” You giggled as Jackson continued to lead you through his apartment, his hands covering your eyes as you weaved about aimlessly.
“Okay, close your eyes for me.” You nodded at his instructions, your eyes clenched shut as he stepped away. You listened closely to the shuffling and footsteps, Jackson’s warmth at your side once more as he eagerly stared at you.
“Okay. Open them now.” You anxiously opened them, excited to see what the random surprise was considering it was neither of your birthdays nor your anniversary.
But, as soon as your eyes opened, your smile fell. You watched the computer screen as your parents stared at you silently with tear-filled eyes, unsure of if they should speak first or you.
This wasn’t the first time Jackson’s did something like this. He invited you on tour with him and, when you landed in your hometown, he made sure you stopped by your parent’s home.
He knew you never forgave your parents for disowning you when you ran away from home at 16 to study abroad against their wishes, and, once you realized they had made up lies to other family members to save their own reputation, it solidified your hatred. He understood your anger. But to cut off your family completely? He thought that was impossible. Family meant everything to him and, considering how your parents were willing to mend things, he was hoping you felt the same.
But, from the way you angrily stomped to the laptop, slamming it shut before glaring at him with the deepest scowl he’s ever seen, he knew your feelings haven’t changed.
“You keep doing this shit and I’m sick of it. I told you I don’t want to talk to them and you keep doing this crap, every single time! Are you stupid? Is that why you’re doing this? Or do you just hate me that much that you want to hurt my feelings?!”
Sure, your words hurt. You had never exploded at Jackson like this, it was actually shocking to him, but you need this. Years of built up anger finally flowing forth as you screamed at him, your voice cracking every so often as anger turned to sadness, sadness turned to defeat, defeat turned to hurt, and the cycle restarted from there.
He waited until you finished, watching you sniffle loudly as your sleeve cladded arm swiped over your tear-stained eyes.
“So, you never want to speak to your parents again? You never considered fixing your relationship and, if it didn’t work, you could at least say you actually tried?” Silence.
You stared at one another trying to find some response but neither of you said a word, your eyes leaving his face as you thought the question over, uncertain of if this is how you’d want things to be forever, even though you were doing fine on your own all these years.
“You don’t have to tell me. But your parents gave me their phone numbers, emails, and new address. If you ever want to fix things, tell me, and I’ll be by your side the entire time. If not, I get it, and I’ll support you 100%.”
Jinyoung
You stared at the annoyed male through your laptop’s screen, his eyes focusing on anything but you. This was your third time this week calling him and, each time, he seemed more distant than before. You had planned to call him whenever Jinyoung wasn’t home, giving you time to repair your damaged family before you decided you wanted to introduce him to them, but your father, with his cold gaze stuck on his television that produced the only sound between you two, couldn’t care less about that.
To add insult to injury, Jinyoung was home early, moving quietly in case you were sleeping in for the day. He could hear light talking, most of the words muffled from the distance, but it was clearly in an exhausted tone. Your exhausted tone. Jinyoung was never one to eavesdrop but you also weren’t the type to open up to him about everything that bothered you. Maybe you were talking with a friend? Maybe your conversation would help him understand why you were so upset the past few days.
When Jinyoung was close enough to hear you clearly, he stopped, his eyes peeking through the slit of your bedroom door where you sat in front of your desk, a man he’s never met staring at you grudgingly.
“Can you hurry up and talk? I have somewhere to be soon.” He spoke, his frame shifting as you cleared your throat, finally having a chance to have a real conversation with him for the first time in years.
“I just think it’s time we talked about everything. I don’t want one of us to die, knowing that our relationship could have been better or that we let it stay as bad as it is.”
“You’re the one that let it get bad, (Y/n).”
“That’s not true!” You protested against his words, pausing for a moment to collect yourself before continuing.
“You’re my father, and it kills me every time I try to talk to you because you never want to speak to me, especially when I’m the only one trying to fix our relationship.”
“You only called me once your mother ran off to marry someone else and you had no one to raise you. You weren’t worried about our relationship when you said you’d rather live with her after the divorce-“
“I was 8. An 8-year-old girl needs her mother, I always tell you that.”
“They also need their fathers but you obviously didn’t need me, right?”
You swallowed back a sob as you were trying to find the words to explain yourself, but you couldn’t. He was just as hurt as you, maybe worse. From the day you were born, even now, he was excited to have you in his life, but to think you didn’t want or need him in yours was too much to bear.
“I have to go.” He said, breaking the tense silence, your body perking up as you finally noticed your lack of words.
“Dad? Dad!“ Your voice cracked slightly as you tried to continue the conversation, but your screen returned to its regular background, your face contorting in a mixture of pain, anger, and sadness as you finally broke down.
Jinyoung has seen you cry only a handful of times, but he’s never seen you cry over something so deep and personal. He felt awkward. How was he supposed to console the girl sobbing loudly at her desk, head buried in her folded arms as she quietly said “I’m sorry” to someone who was no longer listening?
You didn’t hear the bedroom door open but jumped at the feeling of a warm hand on your back, your red eyes meeting Jinyoung’s sad ones as you quickly stood and wiped away over a decade’s worth of tears.
“When did you get home?” You asked quietly, already knowing the answer by the way he silently wrapped his arms around you.
Jinyoung was never one to pry into your personal problems, especially when he felt it was too soon to address, but he knew being there for you was enough until you were ready. And you couldn’t help but tear up once more at the fact, holding onto him for dear life as if he were your lifeline.
Youngjae
“My parents should sit at a table right next to us.”
“Obviously.” You laughed as you watched the wedding planner place the small yellow figurines with name tags onto their spots on the large layout of the wedding hall you rented.
You and Youngjae were only two weeks away from your wedding and things were seemingly falling into place. Everything was perfect. Your wedding dress was even finished on time, now waiting patiently in the bridal shop until it was time to head out into Mokpo. Nothing could ruin this for you.
“Is this a free space?” Youngjae asked, pointing to an unoccupied table right next to the one you two would sit at, the one your family should be at.
“Actually,” Your eyes widened as you watched the wedding planner sort through her binder, checking between the pages and the layout before searching her bag for extra figurines.
“This table should be reserved for your parents and sister, (Y/n).” Both pairs of eyes fell on you and you could feel yourself shrink into the sofa you sat on, your body strangely warm with embarrassment as you slowly unclasped your hands from your lap, revealing the three yellow figures you took while they were busy talking, hoping they’d ignore the small displacement.
For years, you had problems with your sister. She was always the favorite, the one your parents ran to first to help while you struggled in the background. You don’t even think she’s lifted a finger once in her life. It wasn’t until she ruined your high school graduation party that you finally said something, pointing out how your parents allowed her to act so carelessly and all they could do was clean up her mess as if they caused it. She was an adult-child. But, even at that moment, with years of anger coming out, your parents blamed you for feeling that way. You should have been “just like her” and maybe you would’ve been treated better.
Even after they humiliated you, you forgave them, taking some time away by studying in Seoul, making a home and career there for yourself while still trying to keep your relationship with them present. You even invited them to your wedding. So, to have them suddenly call and say your sister was getting married that same day, her waiting until you announced the official date to state the same to your friends and family, was the ultimate slap to the face.
“Are they not coming?” Youngjae finally spoke up, your unknowingly tear-filled eyes finding his as you shook your head sadly, a tense silence taking over.
“How about I come back tomorrow and we can finish this up?”
“Yes, please.” You ignored the two as Youngjae helped pack away her materials, guiding her to the door with a promise that you’d have everything sorted out for her by tomorrow evening before shutting the door, leaving you in a stilted silence.
Youngjae was always considerate of your family problems, even encouraging you to talk to them and invite them to your wedding, but the way you sat silently, mentally beating yourself up for thinking they’d ever change to finally show you some kind of affection, made his heartbreak.
He took his seat next to you, trying to find the words to say to make things better but you interrupted him with a small chuckle, your head shaking in shame at your own stupidity.
“My own parents don’t care enough to come to my wedding. It’s like I don’t even have a family at this point.”
“You have my mother and father, and my brother and sister too.”
“That’s your family, YJ.” You sighed deeply, rolling your eyes in an attempt to hold back any tears you felt may fall.
The warmth of Youngjae’s hands enclosed yours as he held them gently, causing you to turn and give him your full attention, his expression soft yet serious.
“I knew how your family was and I made you invite them anyways and I’m sorry. But, you don’t need them. In two weeks, my family will officially become your family, I’ll be the greatest husband you could ever imagine, and Coco will be our baby.”
You couldn’t help but laugh slightly, amused at the thought that Mark would even consider letting you have Coco full time, but mostly pleased by the idea of actually having loving parents and siblings, whether you were related or not. Youngjae probably thought it was a small gesture but it was big enough for you. And he’d do it a million times again just see you smile.
BamBam
BamBam knew you had issues with your mother’s side of the family, he just didn’t think it was this deep. He sat against his bed, two of his cats pacing around him in circles before laying down by his feet, his eyes too focused on you marching throughout the room with your phone pressed to your ear, a hand running through your hair in frustration as the elderly woman on the line continued to plead.
“(Y/n), it’s just for this month. Your mother fell behind on her rent again and-“
“And what, grandma? She’s asking me to send her another $800 for the third month in a row, and you find nothing suspicious? How did she fall behind anyways? Let me guess, drinking her life away again? Drugs? Gambling? Or did she use it to bail her shitty boyfriend out of jail again.” You snapped, annoyed that this is the same phone call you receive on the same day each month.
Your grandmother was a sweet woman, she just had a bad habit of coddling your mother, treating her as if she needs 24/7 love and care when, really, she needed to grow up. You tried to be considerate and understanding of your mother at first but after a while, you began to notice her patterns, the way she lied and manipulated people to get what she wanted, the way she played victim so she never had to own up to her troubles. You were sick of it.
“She’s going through a rough time, (Y/n), please. She lost her job and-“
“And I don’t care. If your “rough time” last over twenty years, it’s no longer the situation that’s the problem, it’s you. And you’re sitting here enabling her. Grow a spine and kick her out.”
“Don’t talk to me that way.” Your grandmother’s tone changed from pleading to serious but it didn’t waiver your anger, only increasing it.
“Well, somebody has to. Just because you choose to let your daughter live with you on the condition that she pays rent doesn’t mean you’re doing something right, especially when you end up begging me to pick up the slack for her just so you can have her around. She’s your problem, so you deal with her.”
You didn’t bother listening anymore as you hung up, a mixture of a growl and groan escaping your lips as you dragged yourself over to the bed you shared with the now confused boy. BamBam had so many questions yet he couldn’t tell if he had the right to ask. You curled into his side without another word, not mentioning the intense phone call from just a second ago or details of the situation like you gave the last time, just your arms wrapped around his torso and your head on his chest.
“What happened?” He asked nervously, feeling your head shake against his chest to signal that you didn’t want to talk about it.
BamBam hesitantly wrapped his arms around you, feeling you sink further into him as you tried to fall asleep.
He always fantasized in his head how he could help you in situations like this, but he was still so confused. How did things get this way and why? And why were you so used to it by now? He had questions and was slightly desperate for answers, just to make his daydreams of being the protective boyfriend he wants to be come true. But he was already doing enough. He was your safe place in your crumbling world. He may feel like he’s done nothing to help but he was the best help you could ever have.
Yugyeom
Yugyeom watched as you slowly kneeled in front of your bed, placing the folded stack of jeans into your suitcase that sat by his feet on the large mattress, your eyes focused on nothing in particular as you mulled over your decision to head home to see your mother.
Your mother was your biggest bully since the day you were born, belittling and tormenting you at any given chance, physically and mentally. By the time you moved out, you were positive you never wanted to see her again. That was, before your brother called you to let you know she was sick, updating you daily on how her condition went from bad to worse, the doctor’s assuming she had but a few weeks left to live. Despite her abuse towards you, you didn’t want her to die hating you, nor did you want her to die without at least giving you a reason for why she did. But what if she didn’t even want you there? Should you at least honor that unconfirmed wish and stay home?
You were torn up inside about all of this, and Yugyeom could see it. He knew of your troubles and tried to remain neutral about it, not wanting his feelings to influence yours. He was sad that you never really had any support growing up, silently detesting both your parents for making you suffer on your own for years and driving you away when you needed them most, but he felt worse watching you cling to someone who never bothered to check on you since you were 16. He was always silent on the situation, trusting you knew best, but after watching you pack and unpack for the past 3 days, fighting yourself on whether what you were doing was right or wrong, he needed to say something.
“Are you really going?” He asked calmly, causing you to come back to reality to see he was on there with you, resting on one of his elbows while staring down at you expectantly yet patiently.
You looked away with a sigh, shrugging before looking back at him with guilty eyes. You knew how he felt about your family, whether he told you or not, but you wanted one last chance at a mother-daughter relationship, hopefully one that wasn’t toxic and left you emotionally scarred.
Yugyeom sighed before pushing himself up, crossing his legs and scooting forward so that he was beside your suitcase.
“I’m not going to be mad if you go but I don’t want you to get hurt either.” Your lips formed a deep pout as you pressed you forehead onto his jean covered knee.
“I don’t know what to do, Yug.” You sounded so pitiful and stressed, his hand unconsciously finding your hair to comfort you.
One thing Yugyeom learned during your two years together was that you hated overthinking your problems, even major ones like transferring from Ulsan to Seoul for work, his method of helping being to distract you until one of you figured out a plan that could potentially solve it. Maybe, for something as large as this, something he’s never dealt with before, he could do the same.
“How about we go to the dog café you always talk about so you can clear your mind? Then, if it’s not too late, we’ll call your brother, make sure he’s still with your mom, and ask if she wants to see you. If she says yes, we can pack and head out to see her tomorrow morning. Okay?”
You were silent for a moment, causing his heart to stop at the possibility that it wouldn’t work this time, especially when you turned to look at him, your pout still prominent as well as the exhausted look in your eyes.
“Thank you.” You said weakly, causing him to exhale in relief, leaning his head against yours in solace.

@mechanicosmia replied to this post:
// oh mood. jsyk tho, windows updates that require restart open take upwards of several hours, and longer if there are multiples (e.g,, if you haven’t updated in a good while). like, my cap for hard reset is 5 hours. at that point… well. haha if i may suggest… back up your data and just set a day aside to let windows do its thing. you might have a problem with the os that an update will fix. also keep your recovery disc handy if you still have it (assuming retailers give you one upon purchase? they do here; idk what the policies are overseas)
Well, funny thing is, if I do remember to choose ‘update and restart’ instead of ‘update and shutdown’, it only takes like a minute or two, maybe say 10 minutes at highest - but NOT stuck in a circle on black screen but instead actually showing you progress of ‘working on the update’ or whatever - before the restart (and as such the update) is done. Sometimes maybe another ‘update and restart’ before I can ‘shutdown’ without the ‘update and’-stuff in front, but yeah. I just need to actually remember (and have the time to do) that to avoid being stuck in the circle!
After resetting back to before the update, I then did ‘update and restart’ after it was installed and needed a restart, and the update is installed and fine now. Idk why that works and the other way it doesn’t, when I don’t think there should be much of a difference between actually shutting down and doing a restart? Though I guess maybe the power isn’t completely off in the restart, never really looked into (or thought about) the processes there. But yeah, that’s windows for you I guess xD.
-- As for data backup, I try to somewhat regularly (like at least every few months, at least least every half a year) backup things, the last time admittedly has been a little longer already I think, but yeah, after one time having my mom lose all her data I’m doing my best to at least have some sort of backup even if it isn’t complete. And I think there are such recovery discs still given with the computer, yeah, should by lying where my manual is, so if I really do need it I’ll luckily be able to find it. Hooray to keeping stuff (semi-)organized!

All Of Me
Series: My Hero Academia
Story Rating: Teen (cursing and adult themed humor)
Genre: Romance / Humor
Main Pairing: Bakugou x Koge (OC)
When a raging storm traps her alone with her crush, Koge finds out she's not the only one suffering with unbearable feelings.
'Koge reached up and touched her bottom lip lightly, feeling her stomach churn uneasily. "What just happened? Did he almost kiss me? Or did I almost kiss him?"' Bakugou x Koge (OC) One-Shot
Read On: AO3 | FF.NET
Or below the cut!
Koge gave a small sigh as she flopped down onto her bed in her dorm room, letting her arm fall over her eyes. She was exhausted, the days worth of class and some physical hero training completely wore her out. “I think an early bedtime is a good idea tonight…” After a large stretch, she rolled over onto her side, cuddling her face into her pillow. Even though she was still dressed in her uniform and the light from the room was bright to her tired eyes, her bed was like heaven, and she could already feel herself starting to drift away. Just as she was being pulled into darkness, there was an annoying buzzing, starting through her fingers and vibrating all the way into her mind.
Eventually, it became so annoying that she finally opened her eyes, first noticing the light from her phone, which rested by her left hand. It was buzzing over and over with the screen shining brightly, telling her that she was getting a phone call. Still within the first grips of sleep, she fumbled with it, swiping to answer without even looking at the name. Laying it down on her cheek, she didn’t bother holding it, closing her eyes. “Yes?”
“What the fuck? What type of way is that to answer a phone call, Utsuro.”
“Ah, Katsuki… I’m sorry, I was falling asleep.” Her mood instantly boosted by hearing Bakugou’s voice, on top of the fact that he had actually called her first. She felt her cheeks flush a bit, cuddling a pillow tightly to herself. “I wasn’t expecting a call.”
“Sleeping already? That’s fucking lame.”
“I had a pretty exhausting day. You must be in your dorm room, too. Otherwise you wouldn’t call me.” She could hear the sound of typing in the background, and she guessed he had her on speaker while he was on his computer.
“Yeah. I’m having a fucking problem.”
“A problem? Like what?” Holding her phone to her cheek now, she sat up, giving a yawn as she rubbed her face. “Your computer?”
“Fuck! Yes, I-...” Koge heard him grumble in irritation, and she grew curious if he were hiding something. “Some bullshit is going on with it, I can’t fix it.”
Koge stood, turning her phone on speaker before she placed it on her desk. Walking towards her wardrobe, she began to unbutton her uniform, wanting to change into something casual. “What is it doing?”
“This stupid shit keeps coming up every time I try to use it, even if I restart it. I’ve tried all kinds of things, its fucking pissing me off.”
“Huh, sounds like some type of virus or malware.” As she shed her uniform, she tried to think of what it could be, though found it could be a multitude of things. One of her passions was computers, programming in particular, and she had worked hard to teach herself many things. Every once in a while, she found herself dragged in to helping her friends fix something wrong with their electronics. She didn’t ever mind, as it gave her some extra practice. This time however, did bother her. Not because she was being asked for help, but because of who was asking.
Her crush on Bakugou had escalated since his kidnapping, and she had been struggling with not spilling her guts to him any time they talked. If he asks for help, I’m going to have to go over to his dorm. She thought, pulling on some shorts. And be alone with him. In his dorm room. For who knows how long. Oh god. She swallowed the lump in her throat, buttoning her shorts as she looked over towards her phone, able to hear angry grumbling and typing.
“Well I can’t fucking figure it out, whatever it is! Fix it for me!”
There it was, making Koge’s stomach instantly lurch. Sure, they had been alone together many times through the years, but never like this and not with her feelings so intense. “Want to bring it over here, or..?” Stay cool, it’s fine. It’s fine.
“Just fucking come over here, people will ask a lot of questions if I go walking around. You’re basically invisible, no one ever notices you.”
Koge scoffed, rolling her eyes as she finished dressing, walking back over towards her phone. “Geez, don’t have to rub it in. Besides, that’s not true. You notice me.” She said this with a teasing tone, stifling a giggle at the incoherent ranting that came from the phone speaker. While it was still going on, she turned her phone off speaker, bringing it back up to her ear. “Okay, okay, Katsuki, I know you’re frustrated. It was just a joke.”
“Well you’re fucking shit at jokes. Of course I notice you, I’ve known you for fucking ever. Just hurry up before it gets too late and you can’t come.”
“I’m coming right now.” She grabbed a small bag, taking a moment to shove some snacks inside. “I hope you’re decent.”
“Oh shut up! Just hurry up.”
“I’ll see you in a few minutes.” There was only a huff in response before the phone hung up, and Koge pulled it from her ear to gaze down at her screen. She stared at his name as her phone defaulted to her recent calls list, noticing that out of the first five visible, only one was not him. Feeling her face flush, she sighed, locking her phone and putting it away in her pocket. Stupid jerk. He better tell me thank you after I fix it for him. After taking a quick glance around her room, she headed out, going down the stairs of her dorm building and out the front door without anyone noticing her.
Although all the dorm buildings on the UA campus were all in the same area, hers was a decent walk away from the building for class 1-A. It was a warm evening with the sun already beginning to set behind the trees, though the beauty of the sunset wasn’t what caught Koge’s attention. Dark storm clouds were making their way towards the campus, lightning flashing within the belly of the clouds. It was a huge, dark storm, and Koge could tell it was going to be intense. I hope the power doesn’t go out while I’m working… that would just ruin everything.
Able to make it to the dorm building before the storm hit, Koge headed inside, glancing around. Luckily, anyone who was in the common area were gathered at the windows, conversing about the approaching storm. Before she was noticed, she quickly snuck into the stairway, being sure to close the heavy door as quietly as she could. Although Bakugou picked on her for it, she was glad for this uncanny ability to be quiet and go unnoticed when she did things. It often helped her to avoid unwanted social interaction, and break the rules, much like she was doing now.
Just as she exited the stairway door to Bakugou’s floor, she stopped, hearing someone curse out as the door smacked into them. Holding her breath, she thought about what she could do. Run? Hide? Hit them with the door even harder and hopefully knock them out? No, that’s too much… Suck it up, maybe it’s Katsuki.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize someone was there.” She came out from behind the door, immediately feeling her stomach drop when she gazed upon the spiked red hair. Nope, not Katsuki. One eye clenched shut and rubbing his newly injured knee, Kirishima didn’t look up at her at first, too distracted by what had happened. “Ah, well, that’s alright! I mean, the doors don’t have windows, not like you could tell who- hey, wait!” He finally looked up, pointing his finger at her as a curious look came over his features. “What are you doing here?”
Koge clutched the handle of the small bag she carried tighter, hoping he wouldn’t be able to tell how nervous she was. “I, uhm, came to see Katsuki.” Kirishima seemed confused for a moment, placing his hands on his hips. “Bakugou? Why would you- oh!” A sharp toothed grin broke his face. “You’re Koge, right? His friend that’s a second year?” Koge nodded, beginning to scoot her way around him slowly, though he just turned his body to continue to talk to her. “That’s cool! I’m-”
“Eijiro Kirishima. It’s nice to finally meet you.” Koge wasn’t trying to be rude, but her phone was buzzing again, and she knew that it had to be Bakugou losing his patience waiting on her. Though, Kirishima didn’t lose his friendly posture, chuckling instead. “I forgot, everyone in the school knows our names, though I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing by now. Hey, why are you going in there, anyway? I don’t know if you should, he’s been yelling for the past hour.”
Koge couldn’t help but feel comfortable in his presence. With a personality like this, it feels like you could talk to him for hours. “His computer is broken, I was going to help him fix it.” Another curious look came over Kirishima’s face, looking down the hall towards Bakugou’s door. “Huh? His computer? Well I don’t know why he made you come all the way up here, he could have asked one of us for help. Want me to help-”
“No!” Koge was a bit louder than she had wanted to be, instantly biting the inside of her cheek to scold herself at her mistake. “No, no. Really, it’s okay, I can handle it.” The confused look he gave her only made her embarrassment grow, and she could feel heat rush to her cheeks, trying to avoid eye contact. Kirishima began to quietly snicker, leaning forward a bit to try and catch her eyes. “Oh, I get it. I didn’t know he was dating-”
“We’re not!” Once again, too loud, though this time she couldn’t control her panic as she began to back up towards Bakugou’s door. “We’re not- not, we’re not dating. I’m just being a good, uh, friend, you know. Helping him when he asks. Fearing for my life. You know the drill.” Kirishima laughed, reaching up to rub the back of his neck. “Ah, sorry! Well, I won’t hold you up, then!” He grabbed the handle to the door, flashing her one last grin. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep this quiet to anyone else.” Koge gave a small wave, watching as he vanished behind the door. “Thank you, Eijiro.”
Once she was sure he was gone, Koge groaned out loudly, dragging herself towards Bakugou’s door. Oh god, I hope he didn’t hear any of that, he’ll be so annoyed. Standing before the wooden door, she could almost feel the anger radiating from within, and she knew this was going to be an interesting visit. She knocked a few times, listening as she could hear shuffling from inside. Eventually, the door opened, and Bakugou peered down at her with a sneer. “Finally! What did you do, crawl over here?” He stepped aside to let her in, and she took his invitation gladly. “No, I rolled.”
With a scoff, he shut the door a bit too loudly, storming back over towards his computer desk. “Shut up! Just get over here and help me before the storm hits!” As requested, Koge followed him over, placing her bag down on the desk. Without permission, she sat down in his chair, pulling her legs up to sit cross legged in the seat. “So, what is it doing?” One arm resting on the back of the chair, Bakugou leaned over, messing with the mousepad of the laptop to make the screen come to life. Koge tried to control the heat that wanted to rush to her face, finding his closeness a bit overwhelming in the moment.
“That fucking shit, whatever it is, it won’t go away.” He stood back up, though kept his place beside the chair. Pulling the laptop a bit closer to the edge of the desk, Koge looked over the strange pop-up curiously. “And you can’t do anything? No internet, no documents-”
“No!” Bakugou interrupted her, his patience obviously at it’s limit with the device. “If I didn’t have so much shit I need on it, I’d throw it out the fucking window!” Koge shook her head, beginning her work to rectify his problem, her fingers flying across the keys with her quick typing speed. “No need for that. Oh, I brought you those hot chips you like. They’re in that bag.” Bakugou grumbled as he reached into the bag, pulling out the chips. “Thanks…” His voice already calmer, Koge felt a smile tug at the corner of her lips.
Still, she found that she needed to know what he was doing to cause his computer to be burdened with such a virus, continuing her work as she spoke. “So what were you doing when this came up?” Bakugou was silent for a moment, only the sound of crunching chips coming from him. When he eventually spoke up, Koge could hear the slight uneasiness in his voice, and she didn’t believe him for a second. “I wasn’t doing anything, Utsuro,” he paused to eat another chip. “It just came up.”
Koge gave a small grunt in response, taking a moment to glance up at him. “You were watching porn, weren’t you?” Bakugou instantly went into a coughing fit, choking on the chips he had been eating. He slammed the bag of chips on the counter, leaning on it as he tried to recover, and Koge could see that his face had turned bright red. “No, for fucks sake! I wasn’t doing that shit!” Obviously embarrassed, he stormed away from the desk, leaving Koge giggling to herself and taking his chips with him. “It’s a joke, Katsuki! You’re so cute when you’re embarrassed.”
“Shut up! Don’t call me cute!” He yelled at her from the direction of his bed, and she assumed he had laid down to sulk in his embarrassment. “What the fuck are you trying to do, saying shit like that to me.” Angry munching of chips followed his grumble, though Koge kept her focus on the computer. “Just teasing you, Katsuki. We haven’t gotten to hang out in a while, you’ve been busy getting ready for that license exam.” Finishing up something she was doing, she swiveled the chair around to face the bed, leaning back into it. “It wasn’t porn that it came from, looks like it was from a music file you tried to download. You should be more careful trying to get those things.”
Bakugou only grumbled, avoiding looking at her as he continued to eat the chips. He was sitting on his bed with his back against the wall, his legs stretched out and feet hanging over the edge of the small twin sized mattress. It was obvious to Koge that he was very frustrated, especially with his refusal to look at her, but he was much calmer than he had sounded on the phone. “Can you fix it?” Bakugou mumbled under his breath, his crimson eyes flashing to look at her only for a moment. Koge nodded, fixing her legs so that her knees were up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. “Yes, I’m running something right now, though it might take at least an hour or so.”
With a small nod, his eyes moved to her once again before focusing on the window in his room. The blinds were open, and the storm clouds were visible, darkening the sky and swallowing the sunlight. Koge didn’t bother to look at it though, her eyes locked on the boy in front of her. Just looking at him made her heart race, feeling as if it were going to fly out of her mouth. Ever since he had been safely returned from his kidnapping, Koge had found herself hopelessly falling for him more and more every day. She was positive that by now, he could tell that she had a crush on him, but he had yet to show much interest. Koge knew that was because either he wasn’t interested, he was too prideful to say anything, or he was nervous about it.
She hoped desperately that it was the last option. Maybe he was just waiting for the right time to say something? Or maybe he wanted her to admit it first? Koge wasn’t sure. But, as he began to lick the red powder from the chips off his finger tips, Koge had to look away, hiding her face in her knees as her body flushed with heat. I wish he’d let me do that for him… No, Koge, stop it! He’ll notice-
“Something wrong, Utsuro?”
It took every inch of Koge’s self control to not jump at his voice, lifting her head up from her knees. “No, no, I’m alright. Still just a bit tired.” Her stomach bubbled violently as he kept a suspicious gaze on her, knowing that he must be able to see the red on her cheeks. Giving a small cough to clear her throat, Koge nodded towards the bag she had brought, deciding to try and change the conversation topic. “I brought some other stuff, too. Uhm… Gummy worms.” Bakugou’s eyes narrowed at her before he scooted to the edge of the bed and stood, walking over to throw the empty bag of chips in a small trash can. “You’re acting weird, Utsuro.”
“Weird?” Koge repeated, hugging onto her legs tighter. “How am I acting weird?” Bakugou pulled his gaze from her to look into the small bag as he came over to dig through it. “I don’t know. You were normal earlier.” A sly smirk crossed his face as he pulled out the previously stated gummy worms, opening the pack. “Are you actually embarrassed to be in my room like this?” Koge shook her head, doing her best to keep all emotions buried deep down. “No. I’ve been alone with you in a bedroom before.”
Bakugou scoffed, leaning on the desk as he ate one of the candies. “Not since before you moved, we haven’t. You are all fucking shy about it, aren’t you?” He pulled another from the bag, tossing it at her and hitting her in the cheek. Koge gave a small finch as it hit her, reaching up to grab it as it landed on her knee before popping it into her mouth. “I’m not, I’m totally fine.” I’m not totally fine, I’m dying on the inside.
After taking a glance to see what the computer was doing, Bakugou walked back over to his bed, sitting on the edge. “Yeah, sure. How long is that fucking thing going to take?” Koge gave a small shrug, turning the chair to look at it before facing him again. “I’m not sure… It’s not running as fast as I had hoped.” She watched him for a moment, craving another candy. “Toss me one?” Bakugou looked at the worm in his hand, folding it in half. “Open you mouth, I bet I can make it.” Though Koge felt the heat return to her face, she scoffed playfully, putting her legs down. “Yeah right, I bet you can’t.”
“Watch me! Do it!” A determined look came over his features as he readied himself to throw it. Koge gave a small roll of her eyes, opening her mouth and awaiting the candy as demanded. She gave a small gasp as it smacked into her cheek with quite a bit of force, bouncing off her face and landing on the floor. “Ow! Katsuki, throw it gently!” Bakugou scoffed, grabbing another candy. “Fucking ‘ow’, yeah right, you wimp. You’ve taken a punch from me in the face during training, and you’re saying ‘ow’ to a fucking gummy worm?”
Koge narrowed her eyes at him, gripping onto the arms of the chair as she braced her feet on the floor. “Bring it, then. Unless you can’t even throw a damn gummy worm.” She had to resist laughing at the glare he gave her, finding it hilarious how serious he was taking this, watching as he squished the gummy worm between this fingers. “Open your mouth, I won’t miss this time!” Koge did so, giving a yelp as the candy hit her in the eye this time. “Ouch! Katsuki!” Bakugou growled, crushing the bag in his fist. “Damn it, Utsuro, stop moving!”
Crossing her arms, Koge glared at him. “Excuse me? I’m not moving at all! You just have bad aim.” Bakugou grabbed more worms out of the bag. “My aim is perfect! You just have a tiny, useless mouth!” Koge felt her face flush, though she leaned back in the chair, laughing. “A tiny, useless mouth!?” She was unable to stop laughing, leaning back further in the chair, not noticing it squeak under her movements. “Katsuki, you’re so funny!”
Bakugou growled, standing in his frustration. “I’m not trying to be funny! I’m serious, you-” He was interrupted as Koge gave a squeal, the chair she sat in suddenly giving out under her leaning and falling to the ground. Now it was his turn to laugh, cackling at her as she rolled onto the floor out of the chair. “Holy shit, you busted your ass!”
Koge groaned, rubbing her head as she stayed on the ground. “K-Katsuki, I think your chair is broken, that shouldn’t have happened.” Through one squinted eye, she gazed up at him as he walked over, squatting down beside her. “Oh yeah, I broke it a while ago. Guess I should have told you not to lean back.” Koge glowered up at him, reached up to lightly flick him on the nose. “Jerk.” Bakugou gave a small jump at her flick, snatching onto her wrist with a snarl. “Hey! Don’t flick me like that!” Koge’s glare moved to his hand, feeling her heart racing at the heat and roughness of his palm.
Before she could say anything, he gripped her other arm and pulled her to sit up. “Get up off the floor.” As he pulled her up, her legs fumbled a bit with the chair, giving a wince as her forehead bumped into his chin. “Ow! You’re doing nothing but hurting me tod-” Her words caught in her throat as she looked up at him, feeling shock rush through her at how close she was to his face. Bakugou seemed surprised for a moment as well, though neither of them made a move to back away.
What’s going on…? Why isn’t he moving away? Koge could feel her face burning as she stared up at him, feeling his grip grow hotter against her skin. Her heartbeat was pounding all the way up into her ears, baffled by his calm expression and refusal to back away. Get away from me, Katsuki. I can’t do this. I can’t be this close to you! She could feel her entire body beginning to tremble, her mind barely registering that another inch had vanished between them. She could almost feel his lips against hers, the scent of whatever he was wearing making her head spin.
I can’t… Katsuki-
Just as her lips parted, her bottom lip brushing against his, a huge clash of thunder shook the building, lightning flashing into the room and breaking them out of their daze. His face flushing bright red, Bakugou brought a hand up and put it over her face, pushing her back a bit as he stood. “What the fuck are you doing, Utsuro?!” Koge was pushed back to sit on her butt, staring up at him in shock as he walked away. “I… Katsuki-”
“I’ll be back.” He didn’t look back at her as he walked out of the room, leaving her alone, trembling and confused. Her heart still pounding heavily, Koge reached up and touched her bottom lip lightly, feeling her stomach churn uneasily. What just happened? Did he almost kiss me? Or did I almost kiss him? She stood on trembling legs, taking a moment to pick up the crippled chair. She felt as if she were in a dream, as if she had really fallen asleep in her dorm room and this was all in her head. That couldn’t have just happened…
Nearly feeling faint, she sat back down into the chair, spinning it back towards the computer. “Oh… It’s ready…” Feeling tears beginning to well up in her eyes, she reached up and covered her mouth, pulling her legs back up into the chair. W-what do I do? What do I do now? He must be upset if he walked out like that.
Hugging her legs to her chest, she hid her face in her knees, breathing heavily as she tried to control her tears. “Damn it… I probably ruined everything.” She wasn’t sure how long she sat in silence by herself, though by the time she finally lifted her head, the room was filled by the sounds of the violent storm outside. Sniffing, she wiped her eyes and scooted the chair closer to the desk, going back to working on the computer to distract herself.
Eventually, the door opened behind her, though she didn’t have it in her to turn around to face him. Instead, she continued her work, listening as the door shut and the familiar sound of his footsteps went towards the bed. Fingers trembling, she found it harder to type, wanting nothing more than to talk to him. Still, she felt strangled, as if her vocal cords were tied in knots. She could only hope that he would say something to her first so that she would be forced to respond.
No luck. The two of them sat in silence for nearly an hour and a half, Koge focused on her work. As if in a daze, she was surprised when she finally finished, feeling her heart sink and stomach bubble in fear. I have to say something now… Suck it up. Be brave… He’ll hate it if I act like a stupid whiny girl. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she pushed the laptop back into its normal spot. “I’ve fixed it, Katsuki. Sorry it took so long.”
Shuffling sounds from the bed were the first response, a quiet sigh following. “Thanks. Just close it.” Koge was surprised he hadn’t wanted to come see her work and verify it was indeed done, though she shut it as instructed. “You don’t want to come see? What if I just broke it worse and I’m pretending?”
“I trust you.”
Koge felt her heart skip, feeling the heat return to her face. Turning her head, she looked at the window, noticing that it had gotten dark, but the storm was still raging. The sound of the rain was incredibly loud, and Koge hated the thought of having to walk back in it. Pushing herself back from the desk, she stood, taking a deep breath before she turned to face him. She nearly jumped out of her skin at the glare on his face, crossing her arms tightly over her chest as she returned a similar scowl. “What are you looking at me like that for?”
Bakugou narrowed his eyes at her, sitting on the edge of his bed with his elbows resting on his knees. Clasping his hands together, his glare moved towards the window. “You can’t go back to your dorm in this shit show. Go find a girl to stay with.” Koge shifted in her spot, looking back at the window. “I… don’t know any of these girls. Honestly, I’d rather walk back. Maybe I can-” Bakugou growled, standing. “No! I’m not letting you walk back in this. You could get sick or something.” Koge moved her hands to her hips, raising an eyebrow at him. “Not letting me? I think I can make my own decisions.”
His glare moved back down to her, though Koge found this frustration new. She was unsure of what it was exactly, but she assumed it has something to do with their moment earlier. A guilt was creeping over her, feeling as if him being upset was her fault at this point. Her posture and expression relaxing, she reached out and gently placed a hand over his clenched fist. “Katsuki… Are you mad at me?” Immediately, his glare softened, though it was quick to return, pushing her hand off of his. “No! I’m not mad!” Koge took her hand back, crossing her arms back over her chest.
“Then what is all of this glaring and yelling at me about? You must be mad about something.” She watched him as he went over to the window, shutting the blinds to hide the storm. Bakugou stood with his back to her, giving a sigh as he shoved his hands into his sweatpants pockets. “Utsuro, you seriously piss me off sometimes. But I’m not mad at you. You need to find a place to stay, this storm isn’t going to be over until late.” Koge tapped her foot on the ground, a bit frustrated that he wasn’t telling her what was wrong, but she decided not to push him on it for now.
She sighed, reaching up to rub one of her tired eyes. “Well, I don’t think I could stay with one of these girls, I don’t know any of them… What if I just sleep on your floor?” Bakugou turned back towards her, a bit surprised at the suggestion. “What? No, I’m not going to let you sleep on my fucking floor. I’ll sleep on the floor, you take the bed.” Koge shook her head, narrowing her eyes at him. “No way, that’s your bed, I can’t kick you out of it.”
“You’re not kicking me out of it, it’s my decision!”
“I’d rather walk back than make you sleep on the floor, Katsuki.”
“You can’t walk back in this!”
“So then what are we supposed to do? Sleep in the same bed like when we were kids?”
Silence fell over the two as they stared at each other, Koge feeling the heat in her face slowly creep up the longer he stared at her in bewilderment. Eventually, she grew uncomfortable, shifting in her spot. “Are you just going to stare at me?” Bakugou shook his head, turning his back to her again. “We’re not kids anymore, we can’t do that.” Koge gave a small nod, looking down towards the small bed. “We could always put a couple of pillows between us, if you really think you can’t control yourself.”
“That’s not it, you idiot!” Bakugou snapped at her, turning his head to glare at her over his shoulder. “I’m not some idiot pervert like that Grape-Shit who can’t control himself in front of a woman.” Koge noticed that his cheek and ear facing her were bright red, and she guessed she had struck a nerve. “I know, Katsuki, you’re responsible. That’s why I trust you. And who’s a ‘Grape-Shit’?” Bakugou growled in frustration, walking away and towards the closet. “No one, forget it. I’m sick of fighting with you about it, I’m tired. Make up your damn mind.”
Koge rubbed the back of her neck, watching him pull another pillow and blanket from the closet. “Well you won’t let me leave. I won’t sleep in a girls room because I don’t know them. You won’t let me sleep on the floor, and I won’t let you sleep on the floor. So either one of us has to give in, or we have to agree-” She squeaked as Bakugou threw the pillow at her face, making her grab it in a rush before it fell. Hugging it to herself tightly, she watched as he folded the blanket already on the bed over to one side before putting the other over the other half. “We’ll use two different blankets and put a pillow between. We’ll get in so much trouble if we’re caught like this, so you have to leave early in the morning.”
Giving a small nod, she could feel her stomach bubbling with nerves, regretting that she had actually suggested this. She knew it wasn’t going to turn out well, but she couldn’t deny that she was kind of excited. Although she didn’t expect something to happen, she hoped that it would. To wake up accidentally cuddling would be wonderful. Walking over to the bed, she put her pillow down in the empty spot. “Katsuki…” Her eyes were locked on the third pillow tossed onto the bed, unable to handle it eating at her any further.
“What?” Bakugou turned on a lamp beside the bed before he walked back towards the door, turning off the main light. Koge sat down on the edge of the bed, assuming she was going to have the outside end and he was going to be against the wall. “Should we talk about earlier? I-”
“No. Lay down and go to sleep.” Bakugou growled at her, getting in on his side of the bed, wrapping himself into his blanket as tightly as he could with the middle pillow at his back. Koge felt her heart drop as she watched him, feeling a sadness grow within her. “Okay…” I guess it had just been me, then… Reaching over, she turned off the lamp before laying down as well, the pillow feeling more like a rock between them. It perfectly resembled the wall she felt had grown, separating their emotional connection like she had never felt before. He was deeply bothered by what had happened, and so was she, but at this rate, he would end up letting it go like it never happened.
Keeping herself as close to the edge of the bed as she could, she kept her blanket tightly around her, feeling a chill set in as she listened to the storm. It was raging, just as her mind was, and she eventually settled into a restless sleep.
Koge was pulled from sleep by an uncomfortable pressure on her knee, her mind swimming in a fuzzy haze from being in a restless state of unconsciousness. Besides the weird pressure on her knee, she was comfortable and warm, relaxed by the light sound of rain hitting the window. Turning her face more into the soft warmth of her blanket, she shifted her leg just a bit, relieving the pressure to her bone. The weight settled on her thigh instead, resting there comfortably. Must be my blanket all bunched up… She thought to herself, her mind still groggy in the grips of sleep. Man it’s hot in here, though…
The chill that she had fallen asleep with was no longer present. Instead, she was swallowed in a heavy warmth, cocooning her completely. I really like this blanket… Maybe I’ll steal it from him. She buried her face deeper into the soft cloth, feeling an annoying tingling of a chilled nose against the heat. Though, the longer she laid there, the more she came to realize something wasn’t quite right. The blanket he had given her was thin and made of a rougher woven material, nothing like the smooth, soft cloth her face was hidden in. On top of that, she felt as if it were moving, pressing back against her face in a slow, rhythmic motion.
As her mind began to awaken, she noticed more things that should not be. Her legs were trapped, swallowed by an unknown force. In fact, her entire body was in some sort of tight grip, able to feel it resting across her torso and back, pinning her arm down to her chest. Moving her fingers a bit, she could feel the same soft fabric that her face was pressed into, only on the top of her hand instead. Her palm and underside of her forearm were pressed into a hard warmth, able to feel it moving against her in the same pattern as the pressure against her face. Panic began to build within her, mind racing as she finally realized what was happening.
Oh shit… he’s holding me!
Now fully awake and body rushing with adrenaline, Koge opened her eyes, immediately met with the color red. Neither of their blankets had been red, nor the pillows. This was the shirt he had fallen asleep in, warm and soft against her skin. Although she wanted to jump away, to push him off and run out of the door, she found herself frozen, trapped in his grip and by her own fear. I can’t believe this. I knew this was going to happen! If I wake him up, he’s going to totally freak out and never talk to me again, I know it! Koge tried to move her arm, glancing down as she noticed it was quite stuck, both under his grip and by the cloth of his shirt. In a panic, she nearly wanted to scream, noticing that her arm was up inside his shirt. Oh fuck! My arm is in his shirt! How did I do that!? I can’t move it, I’ll end up moving his arm. Damn it, what do I do!
She could feel tears beginning to build up, the familiar burn making her clench her eyes shut tightly. Don’t cry. It’s fine, he’s obviously deep in sleep, he doesn’t realize what’s happening. Taking in a deep breath, she slowly tilted her head up to look at his face, feeling her cheeks flush even hotter. Sure, she had seen him sleeping before, but never this intimately.  Bakugou’s expression was soft, the hard frown lines erased from his features. In the dim light of the dawn coming through the window, Koge could have sworn he was glowing, able to feel her heart pounding heavily all through her body. He’s so gorgeous. I hate him.
Looking away, her eyes fell to his neck, racking her brain for what to do. I could just fall back asleep and enjoy this while I can… Pretend it didn’t happen when I wake up. No, I’d never be able to pretend, I’m going to want this forever. I never expected him to be this cuddly. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she shifted her arm just a bit, trying to slowly wiggle it out of his shirt. As she was almost free, Bakugou shifted, giving a groan as he stretched his body. Fearful, Koge froze, biting onto her bottom lip as he squeezed her as he would a pillow. A little tight there!
Her head was bent back as he pulled her up, pressing his cheek into her forehead and resting his head against hers. With a sigh, his body relaxed back into deep sleep, leaving Koge frozen, her lips dangerously close to his and arm even further up his shirt. Damn it… Katsuki, I hate you. I love you and I hate you all at the same time. Closing her eyes, she wished that she would wake up from this dream and find that they were still separated by that pillow. Calm down… Just go back to sleep… Enjoy it. I may never have this again…
Letting out a small, shaking sigh, Koge began to relax, soaking in the feeling of his warmth and strong embrace. She felt warm and safe, as if she were always meant to be like this. Near drifting off, she felt a change in his breathing, noticing it become faster. His grip on her became tighter,  arm shifting and hand moving to caress the curve of her back.
Oh no, he's awake! Koge tried to stay still, tried to pretend that she was still asleep. Though, she couldn't control the pounding of her heart, and she was sure that the flushing of her cheeks was visible. She must have been convincing, however, as he didn't dare move another inch. Her arm still up inside his shirt, she could feel his heartbeat quicken, and she hoped that it wasn’t from anger. Go back to sleep… Please… As if responding to her thoughts in defiance, his hand slowly slid up her back, caressing her form with the same strong grip and making her stomach violently twist with butterflies.
“Koge…”
Emotions boiling out of control at the use of her first name, Koge opened her eyes, her entire body trembling violently as her gaze locked with his. Vision blurry with tears, she began to breathe heavily, becoming terrified as her mind raced with thoughts of what he was going to say or do. “K-Katsu-” She was cut off, his lips suddenly crashing down on hers, pulling her into a hot and passionate kiss. At first, she was shocked and confused, releasing a muffled gasp as she was completely engulfed in his fire. Unable to resist the burning heat, she opened herself to him completely, her arm sliding around his torso to pull him in closer.
By the time he finally pulled away, they were both breathless and she was on her back, his body pressing into hers as if he had a desperate need to be close to her. Still trembling and her chest pressing against his with each heavy breath, Koge looked up at him, feeling her heart melt from the fiery passion in his gaze. “I… Thought you said you could control yourself.” Bakugou brought one of his hands up to cup her cheek, his thumb running across her sore bottom lip with a soft touch that made her skin tingle with goosebumps. With a small shake of his head, he leaned his forehead against hers, his hand sliding up to tangle into her hair.
“Around women, sure.” His voice was unlike anything Koge had heard from him before, quiet and low, and it only made her body grow warmer. “But not you. I can’t control myself around you anymore.” He kissed her again, softer this time, before continuing. “And I’m not a fucking moron. I see the way you look at me, so I’ve known how you feel about me.” Koge felt her cheeks somehow grow hotter, able to feel it all the way to her ears. Clutching onto him tighter, she tried to control the swelling happiness growing within her, not wanting to cry over this and scare him off.
“Katsuki… I’ve had a crush on  you for years. But I never thought you would like me in any way more than just a friend.” She ran her fingers through his hair gently, her emotional walls crumbling, voice trembling as she spoke. “If you’re going to give me anything… I want all of you. For as long as you’ll have me.”
Bakugou scoffed, nudging her nose with his own. “Don’t be such a baby. Like I told you, the day I came home from being taken… There’s no reason I’d want to leave you.” Koge couldn’t stop the tears this time, clenching her eyes shut tightly as they fell. “Katsuki… You’re being too nice, I’m not used to this, it’s making me cry.” With a growl, Bakugou pinched her cheek, making her squeal and wiggle in discomfort. “Shut up, Utsuro, and stop crying! You’re supposed to be happy.”
Koge sniffed, reaching up to wipe her cheek of tears. “But I am happy.” After a small hiccup, she smiled up at him, making his face and ears instantly flush dark red. “I’m always happy with you.” Bakugou grumbled as he looked away, putting a hand over her face. “Don’t smile at me like that, it drives me crazy.” Koge giggled behind his hand, kissing his calloused palm gently. “Well… I guess I’m going to have to apologize to Eijiro.” Bakugou’s gaze instantly moved back to her, confusion on his face. “Huh? What do you mean?”
Koge’s smile was still present as he removed his hand. “I guess technically I lied to him yesterday. I hit him with the door coming in, and he assumed we were dating. I told him we weren’t, but now…”
Bakugou gave a huff, obviously embarrassed that she had talked to one of his friends like that. “Don’t tell him that, he’ll figure it out on his own. You’re both stupid.” Koge giggled as he leaned in and kissed her cheek in a rough, playful manner, making her clutch back onto him tightly. “If you want all of me, you have it...” He spoke with lips to her ear, his voice sending tingles raging down her spine.
“As long as I can have all of you in return.”

Fire and Metal
Shepard's been spending a lot of time in Mordin's lab as of late. EDI put it to an analytical metric, informing Joker and Garrus that approximately thirty-one percent of her waking activity was spent in there. Considering she's consistently been up for thirty eight hours at a time, interspersed by periods of rest that haven't yet exceeded two hours, it's long periods of time. The doctor had joked that the Commander had obviously taken a sexual interest in him, which he unfortunately could not reciprocate given his disdain for alcohol and mood music. Grunt and Zaeed had found that hilarious, and even Jacob had cracked a rare smile.
Garrus, however, is not so amused, in no small part due to the fact that he knows that Mordin's been continuously operating on her, with Miranda's assistance. He knows this because the latter of the two scientists told him, when questioned. Though, the exact wording she'd used had been “improved upon”.
“I laid the foundational work,” she tells him tiredly in the wake of a particularly long surgical procedure, the third in a week, “But Dr. Solus seems to have grasped the idea behind the Lazarus Project in ways that most of my staff couldn't fathom. Honestly, it's a shame we couldn't have brought him on from the project's inception.”
“Shepard's alive,” the Turian growls in reply, “The project is done with.”
“On the contrary, the project was never finished. Cerberus never meant to just revivify Shepard; we meant to make her invincible. Now if there's nothing else?”
“ 'Nothing else'? There's plenty else! You and Mordin need to stop cutting her up like she's a damn science fair display!”
Despite Garrus standing a foot taller than her, fanged and scarred, Miranda is unfazed by his aggression. It only takes a gentle twitch of her fingers to send him careening out of her quarters, buoyed up by a multitude of mass effect fields. The door locks behind him, before the speakers crackle to life.
“If you have objections, Officer Vakarian,” her filtered voice informs him, “Then you are more than welcome to take them up with the Illusive Man, or better yet: Shepard herself. She's undergoing them all voluntarily.”
To be fair, basic operational implants are standard issue for most military organizations throughout the Milky Way. Garrus himself has a neural mod for AR visuals, tagging enemy combatants or directing him to the next objective. But Shepard? At this point, the Turian suspects she's more metal than meat. Bone reinforcements, a synthetic muscle weave, epidermal medi-gel dispeners, the list of augmentations goes on. She can see in the dark, glow in the dark, the scarring from the Lazarus project shining a luminous orange. On Tuchanka the irradiated atmosphere burns his tongue and throat, Grunt gagging as he sets foot on his homeworld, but Shepard doesn't even sniff, as toxicity filters lining her lungs kick into high gear.
They clash with Eclipse mercenaries on Illium, trying to rescue Miranda's sister. At one point, Mordin and Kasumi are pinned down behind cover. The plan is simple: Garrus and Zaeed will lay down covering fire and Shepard will flank the emplacement. The first part of the plan goes well, and one of the mercs drops when the Commander's shotgun puts a hole through him. The other one is from Palaven, though, and familiar with Turian bait-and-switch ops. He goes for his sidearm and fires off two rounds. The first takes down Shepard's shields, the second one hits her in the cheek and her head snaps back.
There's a long, terrible, strangely quiet moment where Garrus is trying to wrap his head around the fact that it's over, they failed, Shepard is dead again, before she pulls herself upright, eyes burning red, blood waterfalling over bared teeth from the gash in her cheek, and grabs her enemy's hand in her own. There's a sickening crack, and as much as Garrus wants to think that it's the pistol that's falling in twisted pieces to the ground, the other Turian's screams inform him otherwise. He stops when the Commander's fist impacts his helmet, crushing his visor. And his skull. Despite being covered in gore, her wound's stopped bleeding by the time the rest of the squad can meet her, cheeks flush with the effulgence of working medi-gel. A few of them, Garrus included, think they should withdraw, considering Shepard just took a bullet in the head. But Miranda pushes past, uncharacteristic worry coloring her face, and Mordin resolves to check the microfibers once they're back aboard the Normandy.
Joker thinks it's cool. Garrus just thinks of Saren, the plating on his face cracked and threaded with alien lights. Tali is concerned, and with good reason. By the time she joins the mission, glitches have begun to present themselves.
In a firefight with the Blue Suns, one of their Combat Engineers deploys an EMP. EDI falls to silence Garrus's HUD winks out of existence, the comms going with it. But Shepard locks up, drops to the ground, eyes unfocused, jaw slack, like a puppet whose strings have been cut. Garrus is the first one to reach her, alarm's sounding in his head as it becomes clear she's not breathing. A moment later his AR feed reboots, and Shepard sucks in a great lungful of air. That one she actually needs a moment to recover from. Only a moment, though, in spite of what Garrus says. She insists she's fine, and offers a hand to get him upright. They are still in combat, after all. The Turian has trouble remembering that; he's still caught on that split second between his HUD restarting and her breathing again, when her biometric feed reported that her heart had stopped.
Later, EDI connects to Sehpard's augmentations' systems to run a diagnostic, reporting the Commander is, from a strictly medical standpoint, fine. The shit-eating grin she gives her long-time Turian comrade is palpable in the air. But then EDI disconnects and Shepard goes fully blind, until they hook the pair of them back up again.
A new surgery is scheduled to correct the problem, Tali to consult on the code language that was used to write the software for Shepard's prostheses, and finally enough is enough.
Not for Garrus, mind you; he's never once been able to convince Shepard of anything, least of all that she's pushing herself too hard. But Thane has a softer touch.
“It's like when your computer has a bug!” she insists, as the Drell bars the way into Mordin's lab, “You don't toss it in the trash, you fix the problem!”
“But that's where you are failing yourself,” he replies, “You aren't fixing the problem, you're postponing it with more and more extensive augmentations. Siha, you must let yourself heal.”
“Thane. There is no time for me to lay around taking antibiotics. I need to be- EDI. EDI, SHUT UP!”
She hears EDI through the comms, even when the AI isn't broadcasting.
“Siha… Shepard,” Thane insists, “You are pushing yourself beyond what your species is capable of.”
“Isn't that the point of scientific discovery?” sniffs Miranda.
“This doesn't concern you!” snaps Garrus.
“And it does you, Vakarian? Limits are excuses that fearful people invent. Shepard is beyond that kind of thinking.”
“This isn't a fitness goal, Lawson,” cuts in Tali, “You're talking about increasingly invasive surgeries to replace failing tissue with synthetic material!”
“Tali,” groans Shepard, “you're supposed to be on my side here.”
“I'm only here to make sure none of the software has a chance of shorting out your brain. I'm not going to pretend this is a good idea.”
“Two weeks ago, I took a bullet to the head and walked away with a scrape! How is that a bad thing?”
“Because it's what the Reapers are doing, Shepard. Remember Saren?”
“I. Am not. Saren. You all need to stop comparing me to that psychopath. I'm trying to save lives!”
“There are worse fates than death, Elaine,” Thane continues, “I worry for you. You don't sleep. You barely eat. Shepard, no matter how hard you push yourself, you are only human-”
“I'M NOT ALLOWED TO BE 'ONLY HUMAN'!”
Is it the increased capacity of her lungs or just her own fervor that allows for such volume. Garrus doesn't know enough about the sciences behind her augmentations to say for certain. But Shepard's roar is enough to shake the bulkhead. Silence falls in the wake of her fury, broken only by her panting.
“Every time I try to put up my feet,” she seethes, “Or catch my breath, there's an alarm that starts blaring, somewhere. The entire galaxy is catching fire, and you all want me to pretend it isn't happening. I don't get to do that! I'm 'Commander Shepard, best hope for the galaxy, lookie here, it's my favorite store on the Citadel, aren't I great?'. I was dead! It was your turn to pick up the slack and look after space, and look how that turned out! The council buried its head in the sand, Anderson spends more time bitching about this shit than actually trying to clean it up, and half the outposts in the Terminus Systems got abducted while you were out pretending to be heroes! Hell, even Cerberus doesn't want to deal with this, otherwise they would have sent an army on this wild goose chase, instead of sinking a fleet's worth of credits into bringing me back! SHUT THE FUCK UP, LAWSON, DO NOT TRY AND ARGUE WITH ME. Every single one of you would be quaking in their boots, holed up on Omega, or Illium, or wherever you please, if I wasn't here. You all had two years to fix this dumpster fire of a galaxy, and you fucked that up. So don't pretend I'm not the only reason anything gets done around here; I am not going to stop, certainly not so all of you can feel better about yourselves.”
Shepard plants a fist in the wall at the height of this tirade, cracking the panel, her knuckles already knitting shut when she pulls away. Her eyes are collapsing stars, too bright to look directly into, and every one of her crew members averts their eyes, anger and shame and hurt so thick in the air that it carries a scent. And for a moment, Shepard softens. The glow in her eyes, her scars, fade and she watches them with remorse. But it's only a moment.
“If there's nothing else,” she growls, “Then get back to your posts. Boots on the ground in four hours.”
“Shepard, this repair is going to take at least six-” Miranda begins.
“Four. Hours.”
The door locks behind them, and Garrus's stomach sinks as imagines Mordin wheeling out a cart laden with scalpels. He looks at Thane, tries for words, but neither of them can manage anything. Instead, he suits up, and goes to wait out the remaining three and a half hours down in the shuttle. He thinks of a lot of things. His father, never once approving of his insistence that rules and regulations were the only thing standing in the way of true justice. His own band of misfits, dead on the ground of their hideout, in lawless Omega. But mostly, he thinks about Shepard. He thinks about watching her become a shooting star, in the atmosphere of a planet he can't remember the name of. He remembers watching her die, and wonders if she really came back.
Then he touches his scars, thinking about Omega again. He thinks about needing to be rescued. He thinks about bleeding out in the second story of a slumhouse, and how it was Shepard, full of fire and metal that came to his rescue. And he wonders.
Oh, how he wonders.

Hard Disk For Mac
Tumblr media
Get a data lifeguard for Mac
Disk Drill brings deleted files back from the dead.
The backup created by Paragon Hard Disk Manager for Mac (which utilizes Paragon Snapshot for Mac component) resulted in a 30% smaller archive than a similar Time Machine backup. Please, refer to the detailed comparison report below, between Paragon Hard Disk Manager for Mac, Apple Time Machine, and another popular file-level backup solution for.
Hard Disk For Macbook Air
Western Digital My Passport 4TB. The overall best external hard drive for Mac or PC.
Launch Disk Utility. Either head to Applications Utilities, or tap Command + Space and start typing.
Most of the time, when you connect an external hard drive to your Mac’s USB port, you soon see it mount on the desktop. Apple likes to ensure these are easy to find, so they also appear in the Finder in the left-hand column under Devices, since Mac’s treat them the same way as another computer.
However, sometimes, an external hard drive doesn't show up. It’s annoying, especially when you need to transfer something right then. And besides, there can be a risk that data on the external USB pen, hard, or flash drive is corrupt, which means you can’t transfer what you need between devices at all.
Corrupt data can be one reason your Mac won't recognize an external drive, but there are other reasons too. Let’s take a look why this is happening and how you can get an external drive to appear on your Mac and get recover data to access to your documents.
How to fix an external disk drive that won't show up on a Mac
Why an external disk drive is not showing up? There could be a few reasons why a USB flash drive isn’t making an appearance.
Open an External Drive Not Showing on Mac
Get a huge set of top utilities for troubleshooting external hard drives not mounting on a Mac
Start with the basics:
Check whether the drive is properly plugged in. It sounds obvious, but since this relies on a wire - either a USB cable or HDMI cable - if it’s not connected properly then it won’t appear on your desktop.
Faulty cable. Assuming it’s plugged in correctly, not wobbly or loose, the cable could be at fault. Try connecting the same device with a different cable.
Damaged USB or flash drive port. It could be a hardware issue with the Mac. If you’ve got another port, try connecting the device to that one.
Reboot your Mac. Sometimes, if a USB disk won't boot, the cause is macOS issue. Hopefully, some data damage that can be fixed by restarting. Choose the Apple menu > Restart. Or press and hold the power button and, when a dialog box appears, click the Restart or press R. Restarting your Mac essentially clears your macOS’s memory and starts it up fresh.
Incorrectly formatted drive. Not every external drive is optimized for Macs. It could be that you are trying to connect something only fit to interact with Windows devices. If you’ve got a PC or laptop, it’s worth connecting and seeing if you can access the files through another device. The best way to look for an incorrectly formatted drive is to go to Apple (in the top toolbar menu) > About This Mac > Storage. See if the external drive shows up here. For more information, go to the same menu option, then select System Report.
Mac not formatted to display external drives on the desktop. It could be that your Mac already recognizes the device, but just isn’t showing its icon on the desktop screen. Even if that is the case, the drive will still appear in the left-hand column of the Finder menu under Devices. You should be able to access your drive that way, and, in the Finder menu under Preferences > General, you can check External Drives to ensure that from now on it shows up on your desktop too.
Reset NVRAM. To do this, shut down or restart your Mac, switch it back on and immediately press these four keys together for at least 20 seconds: Option, Command, P, and R. It should look as though your Mac has started again; if it has, release the keys when you hear the second startup chime. Hopefully, the hard drive has shown up now.
Check Apple’s Disk Utility to see if an external drive is showing up. Disk Utility is within System Preferences, or you can find it using Spotlight. If it is visible, then click the option to Mount, which should make it visible on the desktop and in the External Drives option in the Finder menu.
Unfortunately, if none of those options has worked and the external drive still isn’t visible, then it could have crashed, or be well and truly broken. But there might still be a way you can recover the data on the external drive.
How to show connected devices in Finder
Go to the Finder menu and select Preferences (Cmd+comma).
From General tab tick External disks to ensure that from now on it shows on the desktop.
In the Sidebar tab you can choose which folders and devices will be shown in the left-hand column of the Finder window.
How to add cloud storages to Finder
You can also mount cloud storage as local drive on your Mac. By connecting Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon to your computer, you get more space for securely accessing and sharing files. For your ease, add cloud drives to Finder with CloudMounter app, so that you keep them close at hand. You can read detailed instructions on managing cloud storage as local drives here.
Repair the failed external drives with First Aid
If your drive is having problems, you can try to fix them yourself with First Aid and therefore get access to your files. First Aid tool will check the disk for errors and then attempt a repair as needed. It helps to verify and repair a range of issues related to startup HD and external drive problems. If you are able to fix the hard drive or SSD in your Mac (or an external drive) using Disk Utility you will hopefully be able to recover your files.
To run Fist Aid on an external hard drive:
Open Disk Utility. You can searching for it using Spotlight Search or via Finder > Application > Utility
Check on your external hard drive, click the First Aid tab and select Run to start running diagnostics.
If First Aid successful in fixing errors, the external drive should be available to mount. If the utility unable to repair issues, your drive truly is broken or formatted using a file system that the Mac cannot read - in this way we suggest you follow the next steps to recover data from a damaged disk drive.
How to recover data from a crashed drive
Thankfully, there is an app for that. Disk Drill is the world’s premier data recovery software for Mac OS X. Powerful enough to retrieve long-lost, mistakenly deleted files from Macs, external hard drives and USB drives and camera cards.
Get a file recovery app
With Setapp you get a pack of professional tools for file recovery and Mac maintenance.
An easy way to recover lost files on an external hard drive
Providing you already have Disk Drill Pro version, which you can get automatically by downloading from Setapp:
Connect your drive to the Mac.
Quit all other applications on the Mac, especially those that may be trying to access the external drive (e.g. iPhoto, Words)
Launch Disk Drill.
Click on the external drive that you are trying to recover files from. If it has partitions, you will see all of them. If, however, you still don’t see any volume to the external drive then you may need to try some of the steps above again or read the Disk Drill Scanning FAQs.
To avoid the external drive being accessed during the recovery process, click Extras next to the drive or drive partition or file, then select Remount Volume As Read Only. A padlock will appear, protecting the drive during the process.
Now click Rebuild (or Recover) next to the file(s) you are trying to recover. Once the scan is finished - it may take some time if the files are large - a list of files will appeal.
Next, click Mount Found Items as Disk button on the bottom-left below the scan results.
Disk Drill “strongly suggest saving the files to a different drive than the one you are trying to recover files from. Saving to the same drive substantially lowers your chances of recovery.”
A drive icon will appear, which once you double click will give you the option to open the files as you would do before they were lost. Drag them to another location, such as your desktop or a folder on your Mac.
Open the files to ensure they have been recovered properly and safely eject the external drive.
Disk Drill does have other ways to recover lost files but assuming there aren’t complications, this method is the most effective. Disk Drill Pro recovery app is available from Setapp, along with dozens of Mac apps that will make your life easier. Never have to worry about a crashed or corrupted external drive again.
A few more tips on getting your files back
Macs and third-party apps that look after Macs, such as Disk Drill and iStat Menus come with a S.M.A.R.T. (also known as Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) status monitor. If a SMART check reports errors, then it could mean the hard drive is at risk of failing completely. Within Disk Utility and Disk Drill, there are several solutions for this: Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk. If neither work, it’s recommended that you backup all of the data from the disk, erase, then run a SMART check again. The external hard drive should show up as Verified.
Partitions can get lost within hard drives, temporarily hiding all of the information contained within. Disk Drill can help to identify and restore this information.
Within Disk Drill, you can restore data when a hard drive is damaged or add formatting, which is also something Disk Utility can help with.
CleanMyMac, another useful app available from Setapp, can help you identify external hard drive errors and repair them. It is an essential tool worth trying when you’re having external hard drive difficulties.
Try all these apps for free
Get a huge set of top apps for keeping your Mac in shape. Best utilities in one pack, give it a go!
Alternative ways to recover data from an external hard drive
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) if your Mac shuts down when you plug in an external hard drive. Then use a different port to connect the external hard drive. If you’ve got a battery that you can’t remove:
Shut down and unplug the power adapter
Press Shift-Control-Option and the power button at the same time. Do this for 10 seconds
Release all keys
Plug the power adapter back in and switch your Mac back on
For Macs with removable batteries, you need to switch them off, remove the battery, then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. After that, put the battery back in, plug in the power adapter and switch the power on again.
What’s your file format? One reason your Mac isn’t recognizing the hard drive is the file format. Windows uses NTFS file formats, while Macs, up until the introduction of Sierra, have used HFS+. Now, Apple has introduced the Apple File System (APFS) for newer operating systems. It is possible to format a hard drive so it can be read on Mac and Windows computers, providing you format using exFAT. However, if you’re having problems accessing the files and the issue is due to formatting, you will need to connect it to a device it can be read on, and then format the files correctly for the computer you are going to use it on next.
How to make Ext2/Ext3 drives readable on Mac
The common issue is Ext2- and Ext3-formatted drives are not readable on macOS. There are two ways to access such external drives on your Mac – via Linux OS or FUSE system. The easiest would be installing Linux to a secondary drive or virtual machine.
Add Adobe Stock to Photoshop and get 10 free images. Adobe Stock gives you access to millions of images, graphics, and videos available right inside Photoshop. Try a free month and download up to 10 high-res images. Cancel risk-free within the first month. Adobe ascertains that Photoshop CS6 works on Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 3, 4, 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 or v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems. I have worked on my Mac Os since years with the creative suite CS6 from adobe and I have worked mostly with the photoshop program. Since the last updates nothing functions correctly I am using Mojave 10.14.5 (18F132). All the programs from the creative suite CS6 do not even open! It shows up a mes. Adobe photoshop cs for mac os. No, legacy/perpetual versions of Photoshop were not designed or tested to work on macOS 10.15 (Catalina). They are not supported in any way for use on macOS Catalina. Adobe does not recommend that customers using old versions of Photoshop upgrade to macOS Catalina.
Tumblr media
If you go with Linux installation, dual boot your Mac with Linux on another drive and use FAT32 as a transfer intermediary. If you don’t have a drive to install Linux to, use virtual machine as an interface for it. Transferring can be done the same way – with FAT32, or via network.
Another option for reading Ext2/Ext3 disks is mounting disk with Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE). Basically, it works as an extra interface enabling file system access via specially installed modules. Here’s how to mount drives with FUSE:
Install FUSE for macOS or MacFUSE as well as fuse-ext2 module.
Use the following Terminal command to enable Disk Utility’s debug menu and see all partitions: defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Attach your Ext2/Ext3 drive and locate the device name via Disk Utility.
In your user account, create a folder to be used as a mount point.
Use the following Terminal command to mount the drive as read-only: fuse-ext2 /dev/disk2s2 /Volumes/mountpoint
For write support, use the command: fuse-ext2 -o force /dev/disk2s2 /Volumes/mountpoint
And that’s not the only case where Terminal helps you access external drive.
Employ the handy all-powerful Terminal, which always comes forward with solutions for difficult problems. Especially if System Information does recognize the USB or hard drive, but continues to hide it from you, disconnect the drive and try to find it using the Terminal, which you can find in Applications > Utilities.
Hikvision products also provide powerful business intelligence for end users, which can enable more efficient operations and greater commercial success. Hikvision is a world leading IoT solution provider with video as its core competency. Featuring an extensive and highly skilled R&D workforce, Hikvision manufactures a full suite of comprehensive products and solutions for a broad range of vertical markets. Cube world for mac os 10.10.
Once in the Terminal, type in the command diskutil list
A list with information about volumes and drives should appear
Look for a section labelled /dev/disk_ (external, physical)
Make a note of the whole line after the word disk
Now put the following command into the Terminal diskutil info disk followed by the number or digits assigned to that disk
Now you should see detailed information about the drive, therefore confirming that your Mac can and does recognize it
Eject using the Terminal by entering the command diskutil eject disk followed by the number or digits assigned to that disk
Physically remove the disk from you Mac
Plug it back in and your Mac should recognize it
Console is also reliable when it comes to solving tricky problems, although it isn’t always that easy to use. You can find Console under Applications > Utilities > Console. Console shows if an external drive or any error is detected under the Errors and Faults tab. If no errors show up, then the problem is not caused by the device.
To sum up, there are lots of potential solutions for a Mac not reading an external hard drive. If we were to pick one, Disk Drill seems to be the most well-rounded, offering plenty of customizations and power in an easy-to-use interface. Disk Drill Pro recovery app is available via Setapp, along with 150+ Mac apps that strive to make your life much much easier. At the very least, you’ll never have to worry about a crashed or corrupted external drive ever again.
Setapp lives on Mac and iOS. Please come back from another device.
Meantime, prepare for all the awesome things you can do with Setapp.

Part 1: What is factory reset a MacBook Pro?
Before you factory reset MacBook Pro, you may be still confused about what is factory reset and why do it. Briefly, factory reset is to erase all personal data and content from a device permanently and return it to factory conditions in the box.

As said before, factory reset MacBook Pro is a little complicated than other devices, partly because there are more work about preparation, including backup, sign out iTunes, iCloud and other accounts.
Step 1. Create a backup for your MacBook Pro
To avoid data loss, backup everything on your Mac is necessary before factory resetting MacBook Pro. There are two methods to create a backup for MacBook Pro.
To back up your device, plug a large enough USB flash or external drive, go to System Preferences-> Time Machine, select Backup Disk, then follow the onscreen instructions to format the drive and transfer all files you want to back up.
Another way is to clone entire hard drive. The programs, like Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper, could copy all data and information on your hard drive to an external hard drive.
The difference between backup with Time Machine and cloning is that former supports selectively copying. Cloning a hard drive means copy all information, including errors, malfunctions, configuration issues and even viruses.
Step 2. Sign out all accounts and services on your Mac
This step includes disabling iTunes, iCloud, FileVault and other apps link to your hardware. iTunes supports to set up to five Mac devices with one account. Disabling iCloud could remove some of personal content from Mac. And the FineVault is designed to encrypt your files on hard drive. So it is better to turn off these services before factory reset MacBook Pro.

1. De-authorize iTunes. Start iTunes, click Store and then Deauthorize This Computer, input your Apple ID and password and hit De-authorise to confirm it. If you use an old version of iTunes, the Deauthorize This Computer is in Account > Authorisations.
2. Turn off iCloud. Open iCloud in System Preferences, click Sign Out Now and then hit Delete from Mac on each popup dialog.
3. Sign out FileVault. Go to System Preferences-> Security & Privacy-> FileVault and turn off File Vault. You will be prompted to enter your password to confirm it.
Besides three services above, you may need to sign out other apps, such as Adobe Photoshop, Netflix and more. And if your MacBook Pro has Touch Bar, you also need to remove any Apple Pay card information.

LENOVO THINKPAD X1 FOLD REVIEW: A FOLDING SCREEN FILLED WITH POTENTIAL
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is awesome… as a concept.
Come on, it’s a display that folds in half. You can carry it around like a tablet. You can prop it up and use it like a Surface Pro. You can fold it halfway and use it like a clamshell laptop. You can fold it slightly and hold it like a hardcover book. And everyone who sees you whip it out of your briefcase will ask “Wow, what’s that?” And you can tell them “Oh, nothing. Just the world’s first foldable PC.” Picture it. There’s no way you won’t feel like the coolest person in your meeting.
So should you buy it?
I mean, no. Before we get into this: definitely not. It’s a whopping $2,499, not including the stylus and keyboard. (Bundles with both accessories start at $2,749 on Lenovo’s website.) That’s more than anyone needs to spend even to get a very good laptop — and there are a few too many problems with the X1 Fold for me to put it in that category.
But! I do like the idea. The folding form factor certainly makes life easier, and I have no doubt that we’ll see more devices like this in the future — assuming manufacturers can work out some of the kinks.
A TRAVEL PRO
Here’s how a day with the X1 Fold went for me. In the morning, before signing on for work, I lay on the couch and used the Fold as a mini clamshell (that is, folded at 90 degrees with the keyboard on the bottom half of the screen) to catch up on emails. Someone had sent me an interesting YouTube video overnight. I unfolded the laptop into a 13.3-inch tablet, setting the keyboard aside, and watched it fullscreen.
Then, work time. I popped out the built-in kickstand and propped the unfolded ThinkPad up on my kitchen table, laying the keyboard out in front of it. I used multiple windows in split-screen, with Slack and Spotify over top, the way I’d use any standard 13-inch laptop. In the early afternoon, I had an hour-long Zoom meeting, so I headed back over to the couch and folded the thing into a book shape, with Zoom on one side and Slack on the other. After that, back to work — but I didn’t feel like going back to the table, so I folded the ThinkPad back into mini-clamshell mode and used it that way on the couch for the rest of the day.
This is all just to illustrate how many different uses there are for this form factor. I can’t say that a folding screen has ever been at the top of my “Laptop Features I Need” list — but after using the X1 Fold for a week, I would love to own one of these.
There’s no laptop I’d rather bring on a business trip than the X1 Fold, and that’s due to a couple of design choices in addition to the versatile form factor. For one: it’s really, really nice. The device is clad in an authentic black leather cover with a sturdy kickstand integrated into it. The ThinkPad logo adds a sleek splash of red. It all looked very out of place in my drab apartment. The only parts that look a tiny bit cheap are the bezels, which are large and rubber. Those are necessary to protect the sides of the display from clinking against each other, and they also give you something to hold while you’re using the Fold as a tablet.
A folding display also makes for a great travel companion. Folded in half, this ThinkPad is about the size of a hardcover book: 9.3 x 6.23 x 1.09 inches and 2.2 pounds (299.4 x 236 x 11.5 mm and 999g). The keyboard fits inside the folded device (magnets keep it secure), and it has a snug sleeve for the stylus on its side. I easily slipped the whole affair into my purse and would have loved carrying it around a trade show or conference under my arm. Any time I brought this somewhere, I thought, “Man, I wish I’d had this in college.”
And with the leather cover, I was never worried about bumping or scratching the Fold — something that can be stressful with devices this expensive. (Lenovo says its product underwent MIL-STD 810H testing and is resistant to conditions including humidity, dust, sand, extreme temperatures, and mechanical shock. This certainly promises a much higher level of durability than we’ve seen from folding phones thus far.)
THE FOLD
With foldable devices, there’s always one big question. The answer to that question is no: you can’t see the crease while you’re using the Fold (though it’s visible when the device is turned off). The exception is when it’s partially folded like a book. The lighting in the middle and the lighting on the sides is a bit uneven in that case. But credit where credit is due: when you’re using the Fold flat, there is no crease to be seen.
The hinge itself, which Lenovo says it spent years developing, is quite sturdy and didn’t give me any problems. The ThinkPad requires two hands and a bit of a firm tug to open. But on the plus side, it always stayed exactly in the position I put it in without any slips or wobbles.
Flat, the display is a 13.3-inch OLED with 2048 x 1536 resolution. That’s a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is unusual for a laptop but feels quite roomy compared to a traditional 16:9. I could easily stack two or even three Chrome windows side by side, often with Slack, Zoom, or another app over top, without having to zoom out. And I didn’t notice any jelly scroll (where one side of the screen is able to change pixels faster than the other side), which was a problem with some early foldable phones.
The viewing experience is a luxury. The panel reproduces 100 percent of the sRGB color gamut, 100 percent of Adobe RGB, and 95 percent of DCI-P3. It’s great for watching videos and movies; even the dock icons pop with color.
On the downside, good luck using this thing outside. Not only is it quite glossy, but it only reached 289 nits at maximum brightness. That’s not a problem for indoor work, but it’s still a bit of a letdown for the price since some premium business laptops offer 1,000-nit options for less.
PERFORMANCE AND SOFTWARE
Lenovo has come up with some neat software tricks to improve the Fold experience. There’s an app called Pen Settings where you can map the buttons on Lenovo’s stylus: they can do everything from copy / pasting to erasing, toggling music and volume, and pulling up various applications.
You can also use Lenovo’s Mode Switcher (which pops up whenever you fold or unfold the device) to split the screen in half, essentially creating two separate displays on either side of the crease. This is most useful in the mini-clamshell form if you want to have one application running up top and one on the bottom. But you can also use it when the Fold is flat, the same way you’d use the Windows split-screen feature. And if you split the screen in Mode Switcher, the Fold preserves that layout when you move between portrait and landscape orientations, whereas elaborate arrangements of tabs and apps sometimes get scattered everywhere otherwise.
These are nice touches, and they show that Lenovo has really thought through the potential this form factor has, rather than just slapping a hinge onto a Surface Pro. But when it comes to performance, there are signs that this product is still in an early stage.
There’s a lot to commend Lenovo for here. I get stressed out just thinking about the tasks this computer has. Not only does it need to know whether it’s in portrait or landscape mode (like any regular tablet), but it also has to detect whether it’s folded, how much it’s folded, and where the keyboard is — and then resize its interface accordingly. Given all that, I’m quite impressed that this thing (mostly) works.
Mostly. But it’s not seamless, and there are some areas where the Fold and Windows 10 aren’t quite seeing eye to eye yet.
For example: every so often when I had the Mini Keyboard connected, the Fold forgot it was there and sent up the on-screen keyboard anyway when I selected a textbox with the stylus. You can turn the on-screen keyboard off in Settings if this annoys you, but it’s still a glitch that’s disappointing to see. On the other hand, occasionally, the on-screen keyboard didn’t come up immediately when I wanted it to, and I’d have to prod the text box a few times before the Fold got the hint. And the little writing box, which is supposed to pop up whenever you tap a text field with the stylus, seemed to come somewhat randomly: it didn’t appear at some times when I wanted it, and it did pop up at some times when I didn’t (like if I had just highlighted something in a Google Doc).
There were two occasions, both after a restart, where the Fold didn’t realize it was in mini-laptop mode and tried to expand across the whole screen. I had to remove and replace the keyboard before the Fold detected it. (Lenovo is aware of that issue and says it’s working on a fix.)
Most annoyingly, I wasn’t able to video chat in Zoom or WebEx using mini-laptop mode because my video feed (like the tablet’s camera) was sideways. That’s not a Lenovo-specific problem — some other Windows convertibles also don’t properly rotate their cameras if you flip them around during video calls. But it’s still something I hope Zoom and WebEx are able to fix. Were it not for this issue, mini-laptop mode would be the ideal form factor for remote meetings (WebEx on the top half, notes on the bottom).
I have faith that Lenovo will iron out these kinks as time goes on. But at present, they are here.
The X1 Fold doesn’t have as heavy-duty of a processor as you’ll find in some other ThinkPads. It’s powered by the Intel Core i5-L16G7, one of Intel’s “Lakefield” CPUs. These are “hybrid” processors, efficient chips designed for small and light devices. They’re Intel’s answer to the Arm chips in phones, tablets, and now MacBooks. (Microsoft’s dual-screen Surface Neo is supposed to be getting one, too.)
Occasional glitches aside, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance here. Multitasking in a dozen apps and Chrome tabs was no problem, and I could do some scrolling and browsing during a long Zoom call without anything freezing up. Of course, that’s also true for plenty of devices you can get for a few hundred bucks.
And the Fold also dragged its feet on some tasks where other premium business laptops (not to mention high-end consumer laptops that are half this price) do better. It takes a good few seconds to boot up, for example, and I sometimes got impatient waiting for it to find things in File Explorer and send windows to fullscreen. Webpages were a bit slower than I’m used to. The ThinkPad also takes a few seconds to rearrange itself between modes — and mini-clamshell mode, in particular — but I’m willing to forgive that since it’s a brand-new use case for Windows 10.
Battery life, though, was quite disappointing. Running the X1 Fold through my sustained workload (around 12 Chrome tabs and apps, occasional Spotify and YouTube streaming and Zoom calls, 200 nits of brightness), I averaged four hours and 50 minutes on the Better Battery profile and five hours and 35 minutes on the Battery Saver profile (with Intel’s battery-saving features enabled). That’s not necessarily unexpected for a laptop with an OLED display and only a 50Whr battery. But it’s not good for a $2,500 device, especially one that’s meant to be used on the go. The Surface Pro 7, which has a higher-resolution screen, got seven to eight hours in our testing.
The final thing worth mentioning here is that Windows 10 is still a “meh” operating system for tablets. If you’ve never used a Windows tablet before, it’s quite different from using an iPad. Gesture controls are still fairly basic, especially compared to Apple’s shortcut offerings. Moreover, most Microsoft apps aren’t designed to be used on a tablet the way that iPad apps are, so you’ll be doing a lot of struggling to tap boxes and icons that are much smaller than your fingertip. And actions like rearranging tabs and dragging / dropping windows that are second-nature with a touchpad are difficult to do with your fingers.
Switching to Windows Tablet Mode helps with this a bit, but you have to dig into the Action Center to turn that on manually. The Fold doesn’t swap to it automatically when you disconnect the keyboard the way Surface Books do. (Again, it’s not a Fold-specific problem — in general, disconnecting Bluetooth keyboards from Windows convertibles doesn’t trigger Tablet Mode — but it’s inconvenient nonetheless.) And of course, Windows 10 doesn’t have any unique features that take advantage of the dual-screen setup; Microsoft is working on an operating system optimized for dual-screen hardware (including its own Surface Neo), but we don’t expect that to arrive until next spring.
The running theme here is that most of these issues are Microsoft’s fault, not Lenovo’s. The convertible laptops Microsoft makes use the same operating system. But the lack of tablet functionality makes more sense on Surface Books and Surface Pros, which can serve as tablets where needed but are still meant to function primarily as computers. The problem with the Fold is that it’s at its best as a tablet. The ideal X1 Fold customer will be using it as a tablet most of the time. Because there are two major reasons I don’t recommend this device as a primary laptop. Those reasons are...
THE KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD
The X1 Fold is beautiful to look at and, as a tablet, a marvel to use. But I still dreaded having to drive it for my actual work every day. That’s because the keyboard and touchpad are tiny.
Now, I understand why they’re tiny. Lenovo wanted to make a keyboard small enough to fit inside the folded device so it wouldn’t be an extra thing to carry around. And it certainly succeeded in making a keyboard that fits perfectly into the folded-up tablet. I was never concerned that it would fall out.
But I hate typing on it. The keys actually feel quite sturdy and have a satisfying click to them, but Lenovo essentially had to combine a number of keys to achieve its desired size. For example: the apostrophe / quotation key, usually to the left of Enter on a US keyboard, has been moved to the far right side of the keyboard above Enter. (It’s a half key, sharing a slot with colon / semicolon). Every time I needed to type an apostrophe, I had to consciously stretch my hand far to the right. Approximately 50 percent of my apostrophe attempts resulted in instinctively slamming Enter instead (as my colleagues who received numerous incomplete Slack messages can attest). I assume you’ll adjust to this after a while of using the Fold, but boy is there a learning curve.
It gets worse: Lenovo had to cram some keys that were already dual-purpose together, meaning that some buttons accommodate as many as four different symbols. Question mark / forward slash has been combined with period / greater than, so typing a question mark requires hitting all three of Shift, Fn, and period at the same time. Dash has been relegated to Fn+9, which also tripped me up. I had to go through this review and delete a bunch of accidental 9s I’d typed before I filed it. And backslash requires Fn+8, which would make the X1 Fold a huge pain for people in STEM fields who needs to use LaTeX and some other programming languages.
Again, I understand why the keyboard needed to be small. But I would rather carry the keyboard separately than have to press three keys to make a question mark. Lenovo could make a nice carrying case that fits the Fold, the keyboard, and the stylus, and I would be totally fine with that. The company could also create some more space by removing the touchpad — which it might as well because the touchpad is basically useless.
To put in context how tiny this thing is: if I place two fingers on it (and my fingers are quite small) there is almost no room above or below them. So as you can probably imagine, scrolling is a pain (you hit the plastic frame immediately) as is clicking / dragging, highlighting, and anything else that requires two moving fingers. (There’s nowhere close to enough room.) Laying out a big article, which involves copy-pasting text and moving a bunch of images around, was quite a struggle.
The touchpad also didn’t do what I needed it to as often as I wanted. It sometimes thought I was holding it down when I had let go, meaning I’d unintentionally move tabs around. And highlighting a segment of text or getting my cursor to land in an exact spot was often a trial-and-error process. Even with the touchpad on its lowest sensitivity, I rarely got the right location on the first go.
I don’t use third-party peripherals with laptops I review, but this touchpad pushed that principle to its limit: I have never been closer to saying “Screw it” and plugging in a mouse to give myself a break. I ended up using the stylus for most of my navigation, but that’s suboptimal for some actions (rearranging tabs, doing anything in Google Docs).
Overall, the X1 Fold is a spectacular device in a lot of ways. It’s good at the one thing it’s advertised for (folding). It’s beautiful, both to look at and to use. It’s sturdy. And the form factor is useful. It’s not a gimmick. I would love to own a tablet like this.
The key word there is “tablet.” The X1 Fold isn’t a tablet. It has a laptop operating system and — more importantly — it’s priced like a laptop. It’s priced like a very expensive laptop.
And it’s not ready to fill that role yet. The battery life isn’t there yet. The keyboard and touchpad aren’t there yet. The software integration, while commendable, isn’t there yet.
The key word there is “yet.” Because with all that being said, I can’t wait for the second generation. Samsung’s first foldable phones were riddled with issues — but just over a year and several iterations later, the company is selling a folding device that’s very usable (albeit pretty expensive). I’m sure that’s going to be the case with foldable laptops as well. Lenovo has a groundbreaking idea, with a strong foundation to build on. I really hope it’s able to patch the Fold’s glitches without compromising on the components that are already exceptional. That would be a breathtaking device, one that would earn my unambiguous recommendation.
AGREE TO CONTINUE: LENOVO THINKPAD X1 FOLD
Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. XP-Pen Artist 10S v2
Yeah... that’s a mouthful ain’t it?
I recently got myself a graphics tablet... with a SCREEN!! I’ve been wanting one of those since I knew they existed, but for the longest time only the insanely-priced Cintiqs were available.
Tumblr media
In recent years, it turns out, other manufacturers have branched into screened graphics tablets also--slowly bringing down the price to an attainable level.
I got my Artist 10S for £199.99 from Amazon. Let me tell you how it went.
From the Top
I have done art before. I was half-decent at it when I was around 10 or so. But it’s been a while. I got myself a decent “dotted” sketchbook and started sketching things out in it to run my RPG sessions. That’s really what gave me the bug to get into drawing again. And to actually buy a tablet to do so!
I downloaded Krita, a free Photoshop-like application for artists. It’s super-powerful, once you figure out how it works. But there are plenty of tutorials online about that if you’re interested in checking it out.
...But anyway, Krita has some nice smoothing algorithms you can turn on for drawing with a pen tablet. The pen doesn’t have tilt and rotation detection, but pressure sensitivity works well with Krita and gives me plenty of expressiveness to get on with. And I was pretty instantly busting out some sweet curves!
It was a pretty amazing experience, really--getting to draw freehand while also having the capability of undo, erase, etc. I’m not saying it brought a tear to my eye, but it was a nice moment.  😂
Tumblr media
Config
The tablet has 6 “Express Keys” along the side, which are configurable to key combinations. When you hold them down, that key is held down (this’ll become important later). I currently have them set to things like canvas pan/zoom/rotate, and a couple of other “hold to use” shortcuts.
The pen is somewhat triangular along the barrel, meaning it won’t roll around on your desk. But it’s smoothed out enough to feel just fine in your hand. It has two barrel buttons, though these are only configurable to mouse various clicks and a preset “brush/eraser” toggle (which didn’t work with Krita out of the box). There is no “eraser” button at the other end (like a pencil with an eraser at the other end)... but I’d find that too fiddly and time consuming to flip it around anyway.
The lack of options for the pen is a little disappointing. Things like this are insanely easy to implement in code--as demonstrated by the express key options. So there’s not really any excuse for it other than the company being small, and this product originally belonging to a different company XP-Pen... bought out or something? I dunno. We’ll get onto them in due course.
Oh, a little side note... the configuration app is only readily accessible from a system tray icon (in Windows). This is fine when you first install the drivers. (And then install the updated drivers so the tablet actually works.) But it has a habit of just... disappearing. After Hibernation or Sleep, that icon tends to wander off somewhere.
And all XP-Pen have to say on that score is to give instructions on how to make it appear again--which only works half the time and may require a restart anyway. I’ve since figured out where the config application itself is kept, and made a shortcut to it in my start menu. In case anyone else is having the same troubles as me, here’s the file path: “C:\Windows\SysWOW64\tabcfg.exe”

Screen
This tablet has a screen! Still getting over that XD
The screen is only 10.1″ corner to corner, which is a little smaller than the average screen tablet such as the Cintiqs. But it’s plenty big enough when it’s sitting right in front of your for actual drawing.
Another reason I pulled the trigger on buying one of these is to get a second screen. I often watch various Youtube videos in the background while I’m playing games and whatnot. I used to prop my Chromebook up next to my regular monitor. This worked fine, but pausing everything when someone came in to speak to me (just a politeness thing I like to employ; nothing sneaky going on)... was a bit of a hassle. And balancing the audio between devices had its own fiddliness (besides the piddly Chromebook speakers not being able to get loud enough for quieter videos).
But now, with two monitors hooked up to the same computer, everything’s a lot easier. I can move windows between screens easily enough. And pausing a video is as simple as moving the mouse over to the other screen and clicking.
Tumblr media
Colour Calibration
However! I am having some trouble with the colours. I was drawing away just fine, a simple cartoon character to try out the shading tools and so on and get used to Krita. Then for whatever reason, I saw the picture on my main monitor. The skin tone was way off--too red for what I was actually going for. It seems the tablet screen likes to give everything a yellow tint--making picking colours pretty tricky.
I’ve tried keeping a preview window open on my main monitor so I can see the “true” colours, but this is really not conducive to a productive work space. Or something ^^
I spend a few days trying to configure the colour management side of things from Windows and NVIDIA (the tablet has back light brightness buttons and that’s it)... but it’s just darned fiddly! I can never quite be sure if it looks right or not--or if both screens at least look similar. All I want is a “click on a colour on the screen, and remove some yellowness from it.” You wouldn’t have thought it would be that hard to do, would you?
But instead I had to use gamma, brightness, and contrast sliders. I think I get brightness and contrast... and I thought I knew what gamma was. But it just never turns out quite how I expect. All I want is a step-by-step tutorial on “First, get your gamma correct across all colours. Here’s how you do that...” And so on and so forth.
There are plenty of test-card images out there, which are a good start. But nothing giving you a list of instructions.
See, if you fix the brightness and contrast, it doesn’t necessarily mean things look right. So then you mess with the gamma and nothing makes sense any more. It seems as though you need to adjust all 3 at the same time to be sure you’re actually making any progress.
I even had a Windows bug where my colours wouldn’t stick. I had to create a new user account (with all the headaches of setting things up all over again) just to fix that issue and make any progress whatsoever!
/sigh/
And this doesn’t even talk about the contrast issues it already has. No matter what I do, it’s too bright in some areas and too dark in others. And with my colours fixed the way they are now, they look closer to my main monitor but not perfect. And they make some things just look a tad awful, across the board.
I’m managing, though. Using it for art--at least black and white art--is great, and as long as I focus on the tablet itself, the colours work just fine.
I did contact XP-Pen, to see if they had a solution. Most companies allow you to download an .icc file--a colour profile so the computer can correct a monitor’s output perfectly--but they just straight-up don’t. After 3 workdays of waiting, they told me to use Windows’ built-in calibration tools--which of course I’d been bashing my head against for the past week.
In case anyone else is having similar colour problems, I’ll give you the settings I used to half-fix it. Note that this is far from perfect, but it certainly seems a lot better than it was before, to my eye.
As I have an NVIDIA graphics card, I used their control panel to change the settings to the following values:
Red: 85% Brightness, 25% Contrast, 0.69 Gamma.
Green: 62% Brightness, 25% Contrast, 0.89 Gamma.
Blue: 90% Brightness, 25% Contrast, 0.72 Gamma.
I think the “All channels” part is just an average of the 3 colours. But in case it’s not...
All channels: 77% Brightness, 25% Contrast, 0.76 Gamma.
Tumblr media
XP-Pen
That brings me onto the company itself. From what I understand, they’re a small company out of China? Or maybe the US? Or both? It’s really hard to tell from their website.
But anyway... I can only assume they’re too small a company to really provide decent support for their products. The response time is way too high, considering the price tags attached to their products. And the “shrug” attitude instead of providing solutions didn’t go down well with me.
Now, there are devices out there that calibrate a screen for you. The cheapest I could find is £90, and comes with a single-computer license. And that’s fair enough; most people don’t need them, and the ones that really need them are photography professionals who have to be willing to shell out some cash or produce poor work. But I’d prefer not to have to get one just to use it once and never look at it again.
The thing is, with this calibration thing, XP-Pen saying something very telling to the customer. They aren’t willing to get a calibration tool themselves, use it on a tablet, and make the resulting .icc file available for all of their customers to use--at least as a good starting point. Instead, they insist that each individual customer buys one themselves if they want any hope of getting relatively accurate colours from their purchase.
I may contact them again, to point this out to them. I mean, it may be that my unit is simply faulty and should be replaced... but then it should be replaced.
/sigh again/
Overall
I am happy with using the tablet. The tech is amazing, for the price. But such a lack of support is really dragging down the experience.
I highly recommend getting a screen tablet. If not this one, then perhaps another. Maybe your Artist 10S won’t have this issue at all and it’ll be perfect right off the bat.
It’s so awesome to be able to draw on your screen, and has really helped me get back into art-ing. I can already see improvement in my skill over the past week, through drawing every day after such a long time not drawing at all!
