nothing, just tolkien originally writing down the hobbit because his son christopher kept complaining that he'd change the details from night to night and then christopher later being so crucial in taking tolkien's notes and turning them into fully written novels of worldbuilding. loving someone to the point of creation and then having them help you finish the job.

Listen, I love love love Sauron, but him and his cronies getting their asses beat by Huan on their own tower trying to accomplish the prophecy of Huan's death is one of the greatest disrespects in the history of Arda. Sauron really said "Ah I know, Huan will be killed by the greatest wolf to live? And I am really great, so what if I was wolf? Ahaha check this out!" Like damn dude not only did Huan chomp your sorry ass, Luthien then shows up with a steel chair with a legendary violation threatening to "strip him of his rayment of flesh and his ghost be sent quaking back to Morgoth there everlastingly thy naked self shall endure the torment of his scorn" like holy shit girl he was already pinned by the neck in Huan's jaws!

Why is no-one talking about the fact that Caranthir too died in the second kinslaying?

Whilst Celegorm and Curufin died in each others arms, perhaps Caranthir was far away... Beyond the reach of his brothers.

Perhaps he had received a fatal wound and his life was fading away slowly. Perhaps his pride kept him from asking for help; maybe he was too embarrassed to ask for help?

The blood that kept his face red- the blood that boiled quick to anger; perhaps it drained out of him slowly and painfully, leaving behind a lifeless hröa.

Why is no-one talking about the fact that Caranthir could have died a lonely death?

why LOTR fans are so freaking awesome

so I was pretty lonely tonight, didn’t make it home this weekend, and ended up on Omegle. No, I do not recommend the site. Yes, it is overwhelmingly creeps. But as an adult who struggles to make friendships and is constantly afraid of annoying people, the idea of a site where people are potentially looking to talk, guaranteeing that you aren’t just ruining their evening with yourself and your weird interests, is appealing.

anyway, one of the interests I put down was LOTR. went through roughly 20 people, only one of whom lasted longer than two or three sentences, (a teenager who also liked crochet. sweetheart why are you on this site).

and then. AND THEN. I get matched with someone who also likes LOTR.

they start off excited that someone else had the same interest! they ask what I’m reading. they talk about how far they are in the Silmarillion. we discuss favorite characters and moments. we talk about the importance of hope as a motif in Tolkiens work and how that differs between the Silmarillion and the LOTR.

guys, I’m full on grinning at the computer at this point. so when they suggest exchanging snap handles? I am all for it. now, this is where it could get dicey... but again, I’m an adult who is very used to blocking and muting to sustain my emotional health.

so the reveal?

its a guy who is a year younger than me, has a legit facebook profile, and just seems like a cool dude, and we chatted for an additional two hours off Omegle.

no expectations, no pressures, just two people in roughly the same stage of life talking about literature that we really enjoy. something I’ve sorely needed in this quarantine life. I don’t know if we’ll chat again, but I’m so thankful he took the time to talk with me tonight.

tldr: people who list LOTRs as one of their interests, in my experience, tend to be decent people who would be very good friends to have.

Maeglin Headcanons

1-Maeglin is averse to sunlight. Its partly genetic and partly his upbringing, but his skin is very pale, so he probably burns easily. I also hc his eyes being very unused to light seeing as he spent his first (80 years or so?) in a forest of perpetual twilight. Maeglin hears stories growing up about the light his mother loves, misses, craves, and he also craves it, but when he finally gets to see it it hurts.

2- he is not a good Quenya student. He has barely any time to learn/practice, and can't keep any written forms to study. He only has a single Quenya speaker to practice with, and can only practice when his father is away and leaves him behind with his mother, which isnt often. Add to those difficulties though, the fact that Quenya is far more complex then Sindarin, and a very difficult language for Sindarin speakers to pick up. He manages to pick up very little Quenya. Barely the basics.

3- Eöl is not abusive at first. Eöl is just very passionate and very bad at expressing emotions in a healthy way. But especially in the beginning, Eöl and Aredhel love each other very much. Eöl loves his son. Eöl doesnt wait 12 years to name his son out if neglect. He does it because he wants a name that suits his son. Not something arbitrary and wasteful. His son needs a name worthy of him. He begins teaching his son from a young age, and can be severe or hard on him, but only because he can see he has great potential and wants to hone it, not squander it. Maeglin recognizes this too. He thrives under constructive critisizm. It doesnt discourage him. His father's influence is why he's so good at smithing. Maeglin and his father have a deep respect for each other. Maeglin is not neglected. Maeglin and his mother are both two of the main focuses of Eöl's life- his passion, dedication, and severity.

4- Eöl doesnt joke about these things. When he threatens to put Maeglin in bonds, he means it. When Maeglin persists, Eöl follows through. Its his duty as a parent to not back out of a punishment once said. If you do that your child wont respect you. He goes on his month long visit to the dwarves alone, and doesn't let Maeglin out until he gets home again. Aredhel is furious. This is the cause of their first major fight. Maeglin hates it. The fight, that is. He knew his father wasnt joking but he still decided to try and convince him. He wasn't expecting it to be for quite so long though. But he hates his parents fighting.

5- Maeglin is probably the cause of most of his parents disagreements. Or at least he thinks he is. He hates this as well. He tries to become as inobtrusive as possible. This is when Maeglin learns how to become very quiet and unimportant, and avoid all attention.

6- Maeglin's upbringing has not led to healthy emotional development. Or even emotional comprehension. He probably handles his emotions even worse then his father.
