i'm literally so in awe how in obey me! they all have such nice nails that don't seem to be ruined at all >__< so if u don't mind may i request how would all of them (could also be mammon centric ehe) react to an mc who gets their nails painted but literally just a few minutes into them, they accidentally get ruined with the simplest tasks they do !!! (may or may not be first hand experience bwahwhaj TT) and tysm and hope you're always doing good !!

Tumblr media
➳ lucifer hears you curse from the other room and puts his book down. “mc?” he calls, “are you alright?” after a moment, you stick your head in the doorway sheepishly. “oh, i’m alright,” you say with a sigh. “my nails aren’t, though. i always mess them up. this is why i don’t really paint them.” lucifer hides his smile. he’s not surprised you already managed to smudge the polish. you never seem to have quite enough patience to wait for them to fully dry. “how about this,” he says, standing. “i’ll do whatever you were trying to do so you don’t mess them up anymore.”
Tumblr media
➳ mammon walks into the living room, spotting you on the couch. “whatcha doing?” he asks, and you jump. “you scared me,” you huff. “and great, i just messed up my nails.” mammon grins apologetically. “my bad. but that’s a nice color.” “thanks,” you say. “i bought it a while ago but only now am trying it out. too bad i can’t really do it justice. i wish i’d learned to paint my nails nicely when i was young because not they always come out looking like shit.” mammon laughs. “shit or now, they look nice on you,” he says. “and if ya really wanted, we could go to the manicurist and i’ll pay for ya.”
Tumblr media
➳ levi crosses his arms. “it’s been like fifteen minutes! what do you mean your nails aren’t dry yet? come on, let’s just play games.” you shake your head. “no way, levi. just trust me, they’re gonna get smudged. no matter how long i wait, they always do.” after a few more minutes of whining and wheedling, he finally convinces you to play. that, however, doesn’t last long. “oh you’ve got to be kidding me,” you mutter, and he looks over, pausing the game. “look,” you say, holding up your hand. somehow you’ve managed to smudge almost every single nail.
Tumblr media
➳ satan watches you begin to put away dishes. “careful,” he warns. “didn’t you just paint your nails?” you roll your eyes. “that was like, thirty minutes ago. they’re definitely dry.” “don’t say i didn’t warn you,” satan says, then begins to help you, pulling plates from the dishwasher. when all of the dishes are finally put away, you turn to him, presumably to gloat about your nails, but the words die on your lips when you see he’s right and that you’ve already smudged three nails. and somehow chipped another.
Tumblr media
➳ asmo grabs your hands, inspecting them. “your nails always smudge because you don’t wait long enough. not just for them to dry, but between coats,” he explains. “you’ve got to have patience! beauty is art, and every great piece of art took a while to make.” you laugh. “maybe i’m just not meant for pained nails.” “nonsense,” asmo dismisses. “now come on, i’ll repaint them for you. you better be grateful, i don’t offer my amazing services to just anyone, you know.” “as if you’d let me forget,” you snort, and he huffs out an affronted breath.
Tumblr media
➳ beel squints at your nails. “those are messed up? they look fine to me.” you sigh. “they are! look at my pinkie nail! and my thumb, too. how can you not see that?” beel shrugs. “i guess everything just looks perfect when it’s on you,” he says, and you fight a smile, crossing your arms. he doesn’t even mean anything by it, either. that’s probably just what he genuinely thinks. “don’t try to flatter me,” you command, “at least not until you tell me how you never mess yours up! it’s unfair!”
Tumblr media
➳ belphie watches you pick at a bit of nail polish, concentrating deeply. “i can never get these to look perfect,” you mutter, “but i can at least get them looking semi-decent. right?” you go in with the brush again, and almost immediately mess up. belphie can’t help how endearing he finds it, even if he’s starting to wonder what the record is for the longest time someone’s spent painting their nails. because you’ve got to be definitely getting close. “just let me do it,” he finally says, leaning over and taking the bottle from you, “or else we’re going to be here all night.”

I believe it's on record that my preferred color scheme for Batman is either blue and gray or all black. Well, there is something to be said for the combo of black and gray. It's what the character started with and has become the sort of, modern default. So, MAFEX repainting this figure in those colors is kind of a no-brainer.
Alright, my blue and gray Bats is in rough shape, mostly due to my own hands. Trying to glue the cowl down led to staining the cape and trying to fix that just caused more problems. Replacing that cape led to major paint damage on the cowl that bothered me a lot. I could have just bought another if it bothered me that bad (or try to repaint but lol), but I really hate just buying the same figure again. So, might as well get the variant. Found one for a solid price and got it.
It's the same figure, in different colors. With a few improvements here or there. The cowl still feels like it sits high, buuuuut it's better overall. The cape is also easier to manipulate, the wires are placed better than the blue one. I hear these improvements are on the reissued blue ones, alongside a few other changes like the cowl now sits better. Also worth noting, he doesn't have a Bruce Wayne head, but does come with a sweet grotesque base.
I'm very prone to figure bias, so this is already making me like this color combo a lot. Regardless, I suppose I could have waited for the upcoming Knightfall Batman if I wanted another blue & gray Bats, but I'm not really into the headsculpts on those. The defined human ears feel wrong for that era's art. It's like they took the Jim Lee sculpts and just extended the ears. Still, decent chance I end up with that when they release it.
I'm two Batmans in on this line and I hardly have any others DC characters. Just a Harley. Once Bane, Riddler, and Scarecrow show up, though? Well, those three right there are already my faves. Now let's get a Penguin and a better Joker too. It's strange how it seems like Medicom almost consciously aimed for the most divisive Joker variants. Maybe I'll pick up the Golden Age one Mezco is doing, that honestly looks like the best one so far to me.

Kun3h0 Custom Doll Repaint
Tumblr media
So, here's what I've been working on for the past month or so. I've wanted to do a custom doll project for a long time now, and I finally got the opportunity to actually do it. I don't think she's bad for a first doll, but there's a lot I feel I could do better and differently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again, my pictures hardly do her any justice... mostly due to color balancing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried to edit these pics to make them a little more accurate, but it also yellowed out everything else, so... yeah. A photographer/image editor I am not.
That said, aside from the poor quality of the images, I'd say that the pics capture both her good points and her jank.
(More about the process and other thoughts under the cut.)
So, she started with a Cave Club doll as the base (I believe her name was Fernessa).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I unfortunately didn't take any pics of this doll with her clothes on, but I'm sure you can search pics of the original base doll yourself.
Besides being very cheap, I really liked the proportions on this doll for Kun3h0. I like the short torso with the long legs and the huge feet. Even the face is kinda Kun3h0-esque (though, a little more on that later).
I've had the idea to customize a Kun3h0 doll for a while, and I always thought the best base would have been an LOL OMG doll since they also have the big head, small torso, and long legs. But, I was always on the fence about them because their hips are a lot wider than Kun3h0's, and I felt like that would always bother me. But once I found out about Cave Club and also found out they're bascially cheap as dirt for the amount of articulation you get, I knew that this was the best match for Kun3h0.
Sadly, the hands aren't as big, and I did consider resculpting them to be more accurate to Kun3h0, but I lack the materials to make that look good enough to be worth doing, so in the end I just repainted the original hands. So I guess this doll is gonna have the non-standard 5-fingers XP. (I forgot to take pics, but the back of the hands do have the heart detail on them. )
Because I have to tie this back to NSR somehow, I think this doll would be a great base for some NSR characters, or really any other stylized character like this. I could def see a cute Mayday coming out of one of these (but not from me~ If I made a Mayday, then I'd want to make a Zuke to go with her, and I just cannot imagine how to make a Zuke doll without him becoming way too top-heavy).
However, I did resculpt the legs to become her boots, so she stands a little taller than the base Cave Club. While I think doing this works for Kun3h0 since she's a robot, if I want to make some alternate outfits for her, they're gonna have to include these boots, or I'm gonna have to get another doll to make some alternate legs.
Unfortunately, my only material I have for body mods is air-dry paper clay, and it doesn't transition as well into the plastic the same way something like apoxie sculpt probably would have. It's not super noticeable at a distance when they're painted, but under scrutiny, you can see a clear transition. I also forgot to detail her heel, so the shoes are flat even though they shouldn't be~ They do help her to stand on her own though, so I guess it's not the worst thing in the world~
While I was doing the sculpting, I also made the wig.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finding a yarn that would properly convey Kun3h0's hair color is nigh impossible, given the cartoony shading of them, so I settled for a median between the dark rasperry and hot pink and got this regular raspberry yarn. The unaltered pics make it look a little more purple than it actually is. It really is a warm raspberry color.
Tumblr media
(I'd say that this is closer to the actual color, maybe a tad darker.)
Let me tell y'all, brushing out yarn wefts is not fun. I also felt like I wasn't doing it right since I lost a lot of material brushing it out. From the little research I did, this seems to be a common problem, but it doesn't sit right with me for so much of it to get wasted like that~
Another challenge I had is that there (of course) aren't very many resources for getting yarn wefts curly or how to make curly hairstyles using yarn wefts. I know that this is relatively easy to achieve with actual doll hair through boil washing, but that wasn't really a viable option for a yarn wig like this. Since I really wanted the hair to look naturally curly as opposed to looking like it was curled after the fact, I curled the hair before gluing it onto the wig cap, which was a mini-nightmare. I followed a video tutorial about how to make a pigtails wig, I just applied the methods to the curly hair.
youtube
I don't know if I just didn't make enough wefts to make the tails poofy enough, or if this method just wasn't suited for curly hair, but I just didn't get the volume I was looking for.
To achieve the fuller look that Kun3h0's puffs have, I glued some scrap yarn fluff in the center of the original puffs and just tried to manage the shape from there. It's not perfect, but I think I've more or less brought her original hair to life. It's hard to see since they get lost in the mess of hair, but I was even able to get those stray curls that she has to look nice~
Tumblr media
However, for some reason, the wig really doesn't like to stay on. I dunno if it's the ears pushing it off, or if something else makes it loose, but it really doesn't like to stay on her head. I might try applying heat to the cap to see if I can get it to reshape around her head properly, but I don't have high hopes for that.
Overall, having made the wig and seen it in real life, I've confirmed something that I've kinda felt for a while: Kun3h0 really needs something on her head between her antenna. I feel like her antenna and the top of her head create a sort of "empty box" that is just asking to be filled with something. I recently did a drawing of Kun3h0 where I have her an ahoge, and I think it helps a lot.
Tumblr media
It's a little too late to add this to the doll (and I don't even know how I'd go about it), but I think from now on, she's gonna have a curl that sticks up on the top of her head.
Moving on: the face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really wish I could get some clearer pictures here, because the eyes really aren't as bad as the pics make them look.
While I am trying to keep her right covered as much as possible, I did still paint both of them with acrylics. I don't have MSC or watercolor pencils like most of the pros do, so I made use of what I had. I'm certainly not getting that "crisp lineart" look that Kun3h0 is basically built on, but I don't think the results are horrible. They're sealed with a gloss varnish, so they don't photograph well, but I do like how the texture is very different from the skin, it almost sells that they're made of glass.
As for the other details, I did do the lining in dark purple, like I usually do for her lineart. I'm on the fence on if this works IRL or not. On the one hand, I feel like the purple lineart is a part of the character design, it helps balance out all the pinks, but when I only use the purple on the doll for the face (and her stomach paneling), I do wonder if it looks strange, and if I would have been better off lining her with dark brown instead.
In fact, I did the original sketch with brown for the paneling.
Tumblr media
(Right eye not canon.)
But when I made the actual doll, I wound up doing purple anyway to match the eyelashes, so they wouldn't look as out of place.
Other details I wanted to mention are that the upper eyelashes/eyelid is actually a piece of painted foam that I glued on. I really wanted to achieve that cartoony look of how I usually draw the lashes over her hair, even if it doesn't make logical sense.
Tumblr media
I wasn't able to do the same thing for the brows, but I still did something a little "special" with them.
Instead of making myself cry trying to get an accurate color-match with paint, her eyebrows are actually flocked using some of the leftover yarn. I've hardly seen anyone do this for a doll repaint, but I don't think this look would suit most brows anyway~
Overall, I'm only a *little* unsatisfied by the face-up, but my disappointment is mostly in the eye-shape. I didn't want to go against the face mold too much, but that meant that I couldn't really make the eye taller like Kun3h0's actually are. If the eye was any taller, the brows would have been right against the hairline, and that wouldn't be a great look IMO. I feel like 80% of Kun3h0's identity is in her face, so having it be even a little inaccurate does bring her down a little.
Lastly, I think all that's left to talk about is clothes and accessories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am personally really in love with the shorts and it's why I chose them to be the preview for this project. I added the beltloops after I took that pic, and I think they turned out so cute, even if you can see the stitching of the belt to the shorts.
I went through quite a few patterns trying to get them right. The Cave Club dolls don't seem to be super popular in customizer circles, so there aren't many if any patterns out there for them. At first I was just eyeballing a shorts pattern from this video and going through some trial and error trying to adapt them to the doll's body.
youtube
I made 3 or 4 pairs of shorts this way, but they all ended up too tight. In the end, I wound up using the "wrap-and-tape" method of pattern making, and made the shorts from there. I honestly wasn't too confident in the results, so I very haphazardly made the trial pair with this new pattern, but they fit so great that I wound up using the test shorts for the final product.
The top was not as successful. Unlike the shorts, I didn't start making test tops until I'd already done the wrap and tape. So the pattern making wasn't actually the hardest part: it was putting it together that was a nightmare.
While I was making the top, I would of course have Kun3h0 put it on to test the fit, which stretched out the fabric to a noticeable degree. This was one of the last things I worked on, so I was getting really fed up with working on this for so long, so I told myself that I would probably just hide it with paint later.
That was mistake number 1.
As I should have learned from painting Green's face, the paint hardened the fabric tremendously, giving it almost no stretch. Originally the plan was to use velcro to close the top in the back, but the pattern didn't account for the lack of stretch, so it's actually too small to close edge to edge. So, I had to cut velcro to extend beyond the actual clothes to close it up. So basically, there's a gaping hole in the back of her outfit and is the main reason why I refuse to post back pictures of this doll.
For the time being, I do consider this top to be a "prototype" and I'll probably remake it in the future with some improvements. But, painting the fabric after stitching it together is not the only mistake I made.
Since this top is a prototype, there's a lot of other things that I did in a bad order: I really should have done the hemming and put on the accents before putting the pieces together, but since I wasn't sure if the pattern would fit first, and thought I would have the energy to make a second better top, I didn't bother with it. This included the cuffs of the sleeve.
That was mistake number 2.
The way I made the sleeves is that the arms are really just a large trapazoid with the shoulder shape at the top. The idea was that I would just sew the large side to a piece of shorter elastic band which would serve as the cuffs. I figured this would cause the sleeve to look "ballooned" at the end. And it kinda worked. You can kinda see how it turned out on her right sleeve in the first picture, but actually sewing it together was kinda terrible because the only way I could think of to do this was to sew the cuff and sleeve separately first, then sew them together, and that just seems ass-backwards to me, but I couldn't think of any other way to do it, and it came out with the cuff being mostly obscured anyway. I tried a different method on the left sleeve, so the cuff is more visible, but the sleeve shape is worse.
So if/when I remake this top, I'm still gonna do this in my ass-backwards way, I've just got to figure out how to keep the sleeve from eating the cuff.
Otherwise, I think the top would actually be pretty cute. I was really getting tired of working on it at the end, so a lot of the details are actually hot-glued on instead of being sewn. The faux-zipper pull is a *little* large, but it's something I had that I thought would work, and I actually really like the oversized look. It works for the proportions of the doll and helps bring in the heart motif that's getting a little lost in the sloppiness of my painting~
The last thing I think worth talking about is the mini GAB.
I thought I'd taken a pic of it by itself, but I guess not. Anyway, the only thing I wanted to say about it is that there's a little "clip" on the back made from wire that allows it to hook onto Kun3h0's belt and be held in her hand. I dunno, I just really like the little accessories, and that little feature amuses me~
But that's it for now. I am actually working on two other accessories for her:
The doll came with a pet dinosuar that I'm currently turning into her GAB.
Tumblr media
It's just about the right size to be in scale with Kun3h0, and the hair is basically already the same as GAB's. I've already modified the base with clay and cut off the bits I don't need. It's mostly a matter of sanding and painting right now. I have no idea how or if I'm going to get the collar onto it without it looking bad, but I'll give it a try. If all else fails, I'll just make a tiny bow-tie like GAB!classic~
I don't have a pic of this one, but the doll also came with some sort of flower pot thing that I'm turning into her drill using a metal piping tip for the drill head~ I'll post about them in an "accessories DLC" when they're both finished.
But wait... if you've made it this far, and you saw my preview post, then you might notice that there's one accessory missing.
Tumblr media
Well, this mask doesn't actually fit Kun3h0...
But it does fit someone else.

eyes with pink liquid
you know, with all that talk of a bad past, no wonder he has such bad self respect for himself.
for his own words, "i always believed that a person is defined by their actions alone. but maybe that's an excuse for my own heartlessness."
for how cold and cruel he thinks he is,
who is he to blame?
for the blood still stains his hands
no matter how many times he washes them or repaints them
no matter how many good deeds he preforms,
he will forever be smudged and tainted of that past of his
because who is he to say?
who is he to say when he's blood- related to cruel people ?
maybe it wasn't them
it was him

2023 Ariel Restyles
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These girls took me nearly three months to finish lol What started as a very simple attempt to redress my 2023 Ariel dolls in nicer outfits turned into an annoyingly expensive 3-month project in which I purchased multiple Ariel dolls, outfits, accessories and tons of sequins and pearls and repainting supplies in order to construct what I imagine a set of 2023 Ariel dolls would look like if they had the same budget, design team and quality of early-mid 2000's Mattel Disney dolls lol Literally so much fucking text below the cut because I couldn't help but explain every minute aspect of my decision making for these dolls like anyone cares!!!!
Mermaid Ariel is wearing a lot of different pieces combined together; my desire for this set was for them to look and feel like they had been manufactured and released by Mattel, so I pulled a lot of elements shared between various mermaid Ariel dolls that they've made over the years and combined them to look like a natural continuation of what they had been doing prior to 2016! Her tail comes from the 2008 Ariel and Friends gift set but has been given a few extra details that were heavily inspired by Forever Hair Ariel from 2004, the bra is from a hasbro Ariel but was altered to fit the Mattel body (and once again has details added to match the tail), and the starfish clip is from the 1997 Ariel and baby Sandy set with the addition of some extra shell sequins in a slight homage to the 2003 Charming Princess Ariel doll's hairpiece. The purse is from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll but has been painted purple to match the rest of her outfit; this piece took the longest because I had to spray it with a base (Mr Hobby Base in White) in order for the acrylic paint to adhere which is something I have NEVER done before and felt incredibly daunting to even attempt (thank you for the help John!!!) but I finally got the courage to try and it worked out perfectly! I was originally dead-set on using real sculpted accessory parts from actual Mattel dolls to construct the embellishments on her outfit because Mattel will rarely use pre-made sequins and buttons for their dolls, but eventually I came to the conclusion that it's not too far out of the realm of possibility and I would be better off creating something that is evocative of factory-made dolls and has the right balance of colors and fabric than it would be to make a less cohesive outfit with a bunch of mismatched sculpted parts that don't look like they were made by the same person. If she were an actual release by Mattel, I think she'd either just be called Deluxe Mermaid Ariel or maybe Magic Pearls Ariel if she were a gimmick doll (perhaps with a color change gimmick on the pearls, hairclip and purse?) lol Some photos of the Ariel dolls that inspired me (Forever Hair obviously being the biggest inspo):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pink Dress Ariel is a lot simpler but actually took the most work and took me the furthest out of my comfort zone when it comes to skill; her dress comes from the 2006 Glitter Princess Ariel doll but has been heavily embellished to look more 'deluxe playline', the peplum was gathered for a little more volume at the waist, pearls added to the waist, hem and collar and the darts on the front of her bodice were tightened to fit the bust on 2023 body more. Pink Dress went through the most trial and error because I couldn't figure out what to use for her tiara or the embellishments on her dress, but I eventually settled on sequins and pearls to match the Mermaid doll because I felt it would give the impression that they were designed as part of the same collection (and it also just looked the best out of everything else lol) Her tiara is from the 2023 Color Splash Ariel doll but was sprayed white and painted over with pearlescent white acrylic paint; I only painted it with one color because Mattel doll tiaras are rarely painted and the original Glitter Princess tiara is also one solid color. Originally I tried using a few Barbie tiaras that already came in the color I needed, but eventually came to the conclusion that she would only look right with an actual 2023 Ariel tiara lol Finally I gave her a choker (a very common design element with Mattel Ariel dolls that I really love) as well as the dinglehopper and shoes from the 2023 Getting Ready Ariel doll! Some photos of the Mattel Ariels that inspired me the most for her design (Glitter Princess is ofc the most obvious inspo):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as a bonus photo of her standing with my original 2006 Glitter Princess Ariel to show how the dress looked before all of my alterations:
Tumblr media
(Glitter Princess didn't originally come with that choker but I had to give her one too lol)
For how deliberately playline-esque and simple these dolls are, it was honestly such a big project to put them together; I learned so many new skills through this project and it was a lot of fun to explore the elements that made the old Mattel Ariel dolls so special in order to combine them in a way that feels authentic, even if it results in a set of dolls that are purposefully lower-impact than a more elaborate custom would be lol

reply roundup!
I've done basically nothing but lay down and be exhausted since kirb2k over 2 months ago, but I did at least get the kirbox orders fulfilled. I have an immunology appointment in another 2 1/2 months and maybe they might do something to help me feel better. (it's a bad time. I know it seems to be most of what I talk about, but it is kind of all-consuming. even this roundup wore me out.)
also there are sometimes comments that make me smile but I don't have anything to add to them so I just read them and smile and don't put them in the roundups, but I promise I do see them all, like the many yeehaws (and yes haws and heehaws) for [cowboy kirb] <3

This is going to be totally random and maybe odd to say, buuuut. I was going through old faves of mine, noticed a piece you did of Darkshore last year, and it made me remember something that I thought you might appreciate.
Long long ago, you did a piece of WoW fanart (of your priest character way back when), and at the time I saw it, I was truly enamored. (I feel like this was back on Deviantart, but I really can't remember now, lol.) There was something so haunting and beautiful about it. I played WoW too, but I had never considered playing Forsaken because I had a little bit of a fear of zombies. But seeing your art as well as the description that accompanied it managed to inspire me... so much that I ended up making my own Forsaken priest, and she's ended up being one of my favorite characters. You sparked in me an appreciation of the dark and grotesque and creepy, and finding the beauty that can be in those things. And I'm not really scared of zombies anymore!
I guess what I wanted to convey is that back then you inspired me, and even now you inspire me! I really love the atmosphere and emotion you can convey in your art.
Lots of love~ <3
omg!! that would have been deviantart, yeah. was it this one?
Tumblr media
I've thought about repainting this many times, not because I feel it needs to be repainted. I just like the setting, colours and pose a lot, and it'd be fun to do again. It's one of the few artworks of mine that's over a decade old that I still like looking at.
I'm glad to hear I helped with the zombie fear, all I really wanted to do with my art was to have people find unpleasant things tolerable enough to sit with and think about. because those things aught to be thought about and appreciated, too.
Thank you for telling me this story. I wish we all had the courage to tell each other stories like this. the world would feel less lonely. how lovely it is that each of us influences every environment we traverse through merely because we traversed it.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 105 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media
(Previously: Episodes 102-104 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-105: The New School Year Starts! A Premonition of Turmoil
As the new school year closes in, Manjoume spends the day prior painting blue the building made white by the Society of Light. Elsewhere, Judai reflects on his battles thus far with Neos after fighting together against Saiou--from the experience of losing to Ed and his cards all becoming white, then meeting the Neo-Spacians and acquiring the Neo-Spacian cards before taking Ed head-on one more time, to his forming a tag-team with Ed to battle Mizuchi.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We're so back. and ready for some finalized emotional hits
(EDIT, 1/26: Reuploaded due to forgetting a name in the In-Between Animation credits during the ending; I'll be posting the corrected hardsub with 106-107 in the next 2-ish weeks)
After my hiatus once I finished finalizing my Season 2 subs in early October, in which I was able to get some other special stuff worked on, what better way to come back to things for Season 3 than with a recap episode? Episode 105's all done, as we get a little downtime after the end of the battle with Saiou for Manjoume to get some repainting going (which he bails on), Chronos and Napoleon grilling Samejima for his choice to let Ojin and his laser satellite participate in GeneX, and Judai taking us down the Season 2 memory lane to reflect on his second and third duels with Ed and learning about the Neo-Spacians and Light of Destruction in between (the latter is worth holding onto...), as well as their Tag Duel together with Mizuchi, while Manjoume thinks to his last duel with Judai and resolves to defeat him eventually as he walks back to the Red dorm--only to find an unexpected guest hogging up the bath in his special room. It was always a nice shake-up to have Rei rejoin the cast here after GeneX, and though she doesn't duel much (Mystic cards when), she does get her moments here/there in Season 3's first half. But other than that, not much to really think on; Samejima ends the episode by setting out to bring in Professor Cobra, who "quickly raised the level of the Duel Academia's West Campus," to help Judai grow--and knowing what comes next, that sounds like an A+ move...
On a side-note, it always amused me how the only clipshows here to be kept the same in the dub were the Ed/Judai rematch and the Mizuchi one; for some reason, 4Kids thought to add back a ton of footage for the other ones that wasn't really needed. If I had to guess, it was to help time commercial breaks better (and also padding since they cut Manjoume's bumping into Rei in the bath), but just a quick lol. (Also, the change from Samejima being grilled about letting in Ojin and effectively aiding the world's destruction to some fake lawsuit Crowler and Bonaparte were bringing up on him... why. [also also awkward Syrus-in-Blue OP edit my beloved])
That all said, a new season means a new set of OP/ENs, and this time it's a new set of songs too! Saying goodbye to 99% and Wake Up Your Heart after 80 episodes, we're given one of the best OP/EN combos in Teardrop and The Sun (aka "Taiyou"). Teardrop, also by 99%'s BOWL, is more on the melancholic side (helped by the shots of Judai being in a funk himself yet still putting on a brave front; this version of the OP was never released textless, and I'd had a textless edit I worked on previously, but was able to revamp it nicely) and ends up being appropriate for how this season ultimately goes, while The Sun is a great rock song from BITE THE LUNG (that maybe could've used slightly more dynamic visuals for the ED) and arguably could've been a good OP too. I'll be uploading the subbed and textless versions of these over onto NAC with this episode soon, and also my YouTube/Videa accounts.
Animation error-wise, with this being mostly a clipshow, there wasn't too much in new animation to pick up any errors on. I mostly reprised some corrections I made previously, though there was a small one with Manjoume and his megaphone early on, as well as one during the Today's Best Card segment at the end. Details below the cut if interested!
Anywho, enjoy! Think I'll delve back into some double releases for a bit since the next couple episodes are two-parters, so I'll start work on 106 and 107 in a bit, as best boy Johan is introduced and duels Judai, and as we learn about a certain someone behind the scenes. Stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits! (105)
As Manjoume shouts at the Blues painting their dorm blue again, he laughs and haughtily said that they'll repaint it blue to reclaim their pride, but as he does, the megaphone he was holding to his side during the panning shot as he laughs disappears the frame after the pan ends and he starts turning--even though he didn't move his arm enough for it to vanish under the screen. I fixed this by masking out his megaphone and then moving it slightly as he turns forward, then again as he turns to face Asuka as she walks towards him near the end of the shot.
During Judai's flashback to his loss against Ed, I recycled my previous fix to Hero Kid being shown as a Normal Monster by making it an Effect Monster, using the footage I edited in for it.
During Judai's flashback to his/Ed's duel against Mizuchi, I recycled my previous fix to the scene as the Mizuchis acknowledge that Infinite Demon Mirror will destroy all the Dark God Tokens out upon Dark God’s destruction, where Mizuchi #2′s side of their split-screen starts to split away a frame before #1's does, fixed by just holding their split-screen over that early-move frame so that they move simultaneously.
During the Today's Best Card segment at the end, we see Neo-Spacian Gran Mole where Winged Kuriboh's card would normally be, switched in because Winged Kuriboh is this episode's card highlight pick--but as its card spins upward, it ends up randomly disappearing, leaving a blank space where it should be for the duration of when it should be visible. I thought of making a proxy and adding it back in, but it would've been too hard to do with the JP text and the glowing on it, so I fixed this by just removing it and masking in the background over it. For the translated screen in the hardsub, I also placed E-Hero Burstlady where Winged Kuriboh would be just for this episode. (Incidentally, I thought they'd changed some of the rotating cards for Season 3, but they're actually all the same as Season 2's; I think they're changed up for Season 4.)
A(nother) Feudal Fairy Tale: Behind the Scenes
Welcome to the behind the scenes footage of creating my Azone Pure Neemo Character Kagome Higurashi! To see the photo gallery, click here!
Tumblr media
Step one: Make sure the outfit can be made. Because this will all be in vain if that can’t be done. Once again, I consulted my dear friend Elenpriv and asked if she could make a second Kagome uniform (she’d made the one for the Barbie body) for a Blythe body (Azone Pure Neemo doll bodies are identical to Blythe, or at least very close). She said yes! WOO!
Side note: Azone has made several outfits for their dolls, including a lot of sailor style school uniforms. They’re perfect - but none of them are green! There is a dark blue/navy one, a black one, I think a red one... all kinds of options, but not a green one. Dang it! LOL
Anyway, next up was finding the perfect doll candidate. I didn’t want to use one of the actual character dolls because, well, they’re already a character from another series lol. So my first step was looking at all the 1/6 scale dolls with black hair. Creating a doll without a reroot was ideal.
There were several options to choose from, but even though they had black hair, there were some other issues.
For one, Kagome’s face is more “pointed” than round. I felt this particular face/head shape was too round.
Tumblr media
I did start with her, but the slightly smaller mouth just didn’t say Kagome to me lol, especially when I kept looking at these pictures for reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So on to the next candidate! This one is nice, she has a nice face shape and a wider mouth:
Tumblr media
I like her, but... her eyes don’t go quite high enough, I don’t think. And I need a template, since I can’t draw to save my life, so I wasn’t going to remove the eyes and start from scratch. She also has a side part, and try as I might, I couldn’t get the bangs to shape properly to hide it. I kept her on the back burner just in case, though. I looked into a couple of other ones like these two:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But they both have dark brown hair, not black. And the second one has too round of a face as well.
I went back to my original choice and attempted to style the hair. Well, one thing about Azone dolls - their hair is saran. That means it doesn’t work with heat very well, and it’s hard to style (or dye, apparently). At least, that’s been my experience. Nylon hair works much better, and is much more heat-resistant.
So at this point, I figured I’d have no choice but to do a reroot. Luckily for me, I’d already done a complete reroot with Olivier Mira Armstrong. So this would be my second one!
But I still needed a doll. As I looked at option number 3 more, I absolutely loved her face. The shape was right, and she had the wider smile. All of these dolls would have the same issue of needing their eyes repainted due to how their irises are compared to Kagome, so I wasn’t even looking at that.
Well, I didn’t want to buy one of these dolls (they’re designed for collectors, so they’re not just cheap play line ones you can get off a shelf - plus they’re all from Japan, which raises the price tag) just to “tear up.” So I looked in my stash and discovered I had two of one doll, and it happened to be the one with that face! So here’s the winner:
Tumblr media
Her hair is actually the same color as mine in real life lol. That’s super hard to find... but not with Azone! They’ve designed several with that hair color, to which I say hallelujah. I’ve seen maybe two Barbies with that hair color. Come on, Mattel, get with it!
Anyway, the first step was to make sure I could pull off the reroot. I’d repainted Kagome’s face before (plus Sango’s, which is pretty much the same except for pink eyeshadow as well), so you’d think I’d be an expert at that. (More on that later).
I cut the hair off and then used small needle nose pliers to pull out the rest. Azone doll heads, it seems, don’t have glue on the inside - the hairs were all kind of weaved together inside the head. And there was one large piece where the part was that kind of held it all together, so I was left with a larger hole than I liked when I got all the hair out. But I did use some Loc-Tite to close it, just to be safe, and it seemed to be okay.
Tumblr media
Next I painted the scalp black to match the hair she’d be getting. Of course, I forgot to use acetone to remove the original paint, and then I forgot to seal the black paint. So during the reroot process, it kept chipping away. Oops. I’m still new at this lol. Fortunately, you can’t see any of that with the final product.
So, during this rerooting process, I kept reminding myself of how I had to go back and add more hair to Olivier a few times because I’d made it too thin. So this time I went all out, even though most rerooters say you don’t have to plug every single hole (even though the factory did)... there’s a head in here somewhere LOL.
Tumblr media
Once I was finished with all that hair, it was time for the boil wash. It never fails - whenever I do this, loose hairs that didn’t get plugged always come out. I need to figure out a method to prevent that, as well as prevent the hair from becoming a big stringy mess during the reroot process.
Of course, I probably should have taken a batch of hair and cut it so it didn’t wind up this long because I knew I’d have to cut it anyway:
Tumblr media
Anyway, once the boil wash was done, it was time to do the bangs. Bangs have always been tricky for me. I don’t know how I managed to give my Anastasia Steele bangs without much of an issue... but perhaps it was because I used the method in this video, which I repeated for Kagome. I got them cut into shape (and again, they have such an odd shape compared to other characters - they’re almost triangular whereas all the other girls have straight bangs), then used the method in the video to get them to lay flat. When the face was done, I used some of my Volks doll hair spray to help the bangs stay in place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of the face, that came next (I cut the hair first to make it easier to work with, with the intention of styling it later). Another difference between Azone dolls and other dolls I’ve worked with (particularly Barbie and Disney Store) - their eyes are stickers. Maybe other dolls are too now, but these particular stickers come off very easily if you rub them with a toothpick. Which I tend to do quite often when painting doll faces/eyes because inevitably some paint will stray from the brush and go where I don’t want it.
But I did use this to my advantage because the doll I chose had eyes with lashes that were pointing outward a little too far to match Kagome’s shape. So I used my toothpick to remove them, giving the eyes a more rounded appearance.
My original goal was to just draw over the eyes already in place, essentially changing the color from light brown/gold to dark brown. Well, Azone doll eyes have large pupils and smaller irises, and the white parts are smaller yet. The Inuyasha art style is different, with a large white part going from the top to the center of the eye, surrounded by a little bit of black and an almost horseshoe shape made up of two different shades of the iris color. Yeah, I studied that a lot. :D Plus, in many instances, Kagome’s eyes don’t look perfectly round, but more oval/oblong. But I did have to work with the shape of the sculpt/eye socket of the doll, so I tried to give her the appearance of having the “taller” eyes with the shape of the iris. And then there was the fun issue of getting those eyes even and the same size! I literally painted over the entire original eye with white paint, then went back in with the blacks and browns. I did discover that watercolor pencils will color on acrylic paint, so that helped me sketch out the design and go over it with paint again. It took some time, but finally, the face was ready! Mod Podge sealer applied!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next step was styling the hair. You’d think I’d have it down by now, but noooo. Kagome has the most complicated hair of all the Inuyasha girls, I think. Sango and Kikyo have simple hairstyles and straight bangs. Kagome has triangular shaped hair all the way around. It ends at a point in the back, as do the bangs. Sigh.
So I got the hair trimmed into the proper shape using a layering method, which made her look like she stuck her finger in a light socket in the process. :D Once I was satisfied with the shape/length, I attached the head back onto the body, which already had the uniform on. Success!
Except...
The hair looked too thick, and a few people confirmed this when I showed it to them. Yeah, I was so worried about not having to add more hair later that I actually added too much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was also too long at this point as well. So then I was frantically trying to figure out how to salvage the situation without completely starting over. Some people suggested using a razor to thin it out. Yeah, I think they meant a straight razor like a barber uses, because my Dollar Shave Club razor didn’t work very well...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then someone suggested shearing scissors. I’d previously purchased a hair styling set with two types of scissors (one of which was shearing) and combs. I’d never used those scissors before, because I didn’t know how the heck they worked. So I dug them out and used a practice doll to see what they did. And they did what I needed them to! Instead of cutting the length of the hair, it just cuts pieces to thin it out.
So I took these shearing scissors to the hair and made it a lot less bulky. Then I used my curling iron (and a spray bottle to get the hair completely soaked to be safe) to help shape the hair in the back. Of course, that’s easier said than done... there’s that pointy shape at the end, but the primary view will be from the front, so I had to be wary of that as well. And I didn’t want to cut too much, either. Kagome’s hair is most often seen above the waist, about mid-back under her green collar. It’s definitely shorter than Inuyasha’s. I was afraid I’d cut it too short when I applied the curling iron, but I took some of the curl out a bit and it seems to be okay now. Whew! I really didn’t want to have to redo all that... why didn’t I just send the head off to be rerooted professionally? Because I hate the post office and don’t trust them not to lose the head, and these dolls are, again, meant for adult collectors, so they’re not cheap. No way was I risking losing it. Plus, I wanted more practice anyway, and it did save me money. A professional reroot is worth it, but for this doll, I wanted to do it all by myself (except the uniform because no way can I do that lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, finally, after playing with the hair a bit, I added some of the Volks spray and mousse (used to prevent flyaway strands), and she was ready! Woo!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But she wasn’t done yet! She still needs her accessories. :D She’ll be sharing her backpack and bike with my Barbie size Kagome, but I wanted to give her a bow for sure and maybe even some better arrows. Well, what luck - hubby got me a 3D printer for Christmas! And I managed to find a 3D print file for Kagome’s bow, arrows, and quiver on Etsy! These were cosplay size, but the seller was able to size them down for 1/6 scale for me. (The seller has since closed her shop, so I can’t post the link here, unfortunately.) Those little arrows were super delicate, but they look better than my first batch! Well, the arrow heads do, anyway. My first batch was the perfect size all the way except the arrowheads, which I attempted to replicate out of Crayola Model Magic. And it didn’t look good lol. So now I’ll probably try to print some more heads and glue them to the Barbie ones so they look better.
But first, let’s get the Azone one done, shall we? Because these were all 3D printed, they were one solid color and needed to be painted. Well, that was easy. I’d kept notes of all the colors and color combinations I’d used for my other dolls, so I just dug those out again and got to work. I glued some thin twine around the quiver like before, as well as a strap to go over Kagome’s shoulder. The bow string is made of black thread.
Tumblr media
(Notice how she has her finger pointing to guard her aim! See - interchangeable hands!!!)
I painted one arrow head to look like a sacred arrow. :D We attempted to print probably six or eight arrows, but some of them fell apart because they’re just so fragile. The heads survived, though, so they’ll be good experiments for the Barbie arrows lol.
So, remember how I said Azone dolls are meant to have their hands changed? Yeah, that made for some awesome posing. Kagome can actually properly hold her bow and arrows now! (Okay, the Barbie can too, but removing those hands requires heat and more muscle since they’re not designed to be removed like that.)
I’d originally planned to give Kagome a 26cm Obitsu body. The Inuyasha doll is about 30cm, so 26cm would be about right for Kagome if we’re going in terms of actual height. The Barbie is technically a bit tall, but I’m still satisfied with her. Plus she has the proper skin tone to match the Inuyasha doll. The Azone dolls have two skin tones - flesh and white. Both are much more pale than the Inuyasha doll, so she’d wind up looking more like Kikyo in the long run. Same with Obitsu bodies.
Anyway, why didn’t I go with the Obitsu body? Well, all would have been fine if the shoes had fit. :D Obitsu feet are wider/larger than Azone, despite the bodies being almost identical in height. So with her socks on, the shoes would not go on the Obitsu feet. So back to the original Azone body! But hey, she’s a “true” Azone Pure Neemo Character Series doll now - all the character dolls have either Pure Neemo Flection (this one) or Emotion (more articulation but significantly smaller/thinner) bodies, so this makes her accurate to the series. And she’s not really meant to go with the Inuyasha doll, honestly; she’s my interpretation of another doll line that I love. And many of those dolls only have character made from the series, not all of them. There are a few exceptions like K-ON! and Love! Live! Sunshine! But mostly, it’s just one character like Nezuko and Asuna.
Size comparison to the 12″ collector doll and the Barbie size Kagome I made to go with him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So for that reason as well, I am not going to make more Azone dolls lol. Or at least, I don’t plan to... we know how that goes LOL. But for right now, I’m content with my Azone Kagome! She may not be perfect, but I’m proud of myself for doing everything completely on my own (except the uniform). It makes her even more special!
When I bought my house, I wanted to repaint because all the walls were beige and maybe I just have apartment/renting PTSD but I hate beige, so when I first moved in, I painted all the walls gray.
My plan for 2023 is to finally add color, because I’m itching to change it up.
(putting this under the cut because there’s pictures and I don’t want to be annoying lol).
I want to start off with wallpaper beneath my stairs, because I think once I choose a wallpaper, I can decide what colors will go in the rest of the house? The downstairs is sort of all one big room, so it needs to flow nicely.
Tumblr media
My issue is that I'm SO INDECISIVE and once I choose a wallpaper, I sort of can't go back?
I know I want something obnoxious and floral.
Tumblr media
Something like this, though I wonder if it would make the hallway too dark??
And I also really want to paint my kitchen cabinets?? I’ve already massively overhauled my kitchen (it looks SO much better then when I moved in, in my humble opinion), but I’m also being indecisive there.
Anyway. I’m just sort of typing this out because, as in all decisions I make, I need to talk them out ad nauseum to multiple people.
Also, if anyone knows a good resource for like... planning home decor?? Is that a thing???
I sealed the painted work on my Damtoys RE2 Remake Leon's head sculpt and glossed the eyes! I'm super happy with him, once again, more so than the factory out-of-box head I received just a few days ago. Remake Leon was my first Damtoys figure I purchased, and I was disappointed when I saw him inside his box. However, I thought, maybe it's just the plastic distortion, because I didn't unbox him then. I got this head parted out from the recently released in the USA classic version. It wasn't distortion, his paint apps were as disappointing as I had feared. I was hoping that because this is a much newer release, the classic version, they would have improved the paint apps. However, they didn't! I always complain about lack of QA and QC from Hot Toys' figures, but at least their paint apps are palatable for 300USD figures. Damtoys Leon's on the other hand... >__<;;
There's a lot I can still improve on, with my repaints, the eyes are not it. They are tiny and my hands don't cooperate. I am still learning however, so i hope to improve little by little, and have no plans to stop repainting and painting as many of my 1:6 toys as I can/I'm willing to! Even if it takes me a lifetime and a half to see any real improvement, I'll continue to try my best each time! And if I fail, I'll just keep repainting the sculpts over and over, because I am stubborn and that's the reason I got them -- to customize them to my liking, even if I suck at it! Lol! (:
I added a few repetitive shots, because my camera/lighting keeps wanting to whitewash him. He's not as pale, heck, I am not pale at all and the coloring in the first photo would probably seem as though I am. He's not tanner than I am, but greyer toned, since I want him to somewhat match his Damtoys body once I have display space for his full-set figure to be unboxed. He's pretty tanned IRL though, because his body is very tanned, or at least the parted out one I got for my OG RE4 3D artist printed head, is pretty tanned and red-toned, which I guess might be factory variances. I don't mind if it's not a perfect match, since he'll always be fully dressed once displayed. I might take some more photos of him on my OG RE4's body, or the RPD uniformed one, just for fun. DX
Heya! You seem like the main authority on bjd I know of, so I figured you might be the person to ask...
Does anyone in the community have any good resources for making/sculpting your own doll? I've had a specific dragon in my mind for years now, but (dragons not being popular for some reason and the main makers having all but vanished), there aren't many places to look. None of the offered models were quite what I wanted, either—mine wasn't a feral dragon, quite, but not as on the humanoid side as most dragon anthros are. So I figured I'd try making one, though I have little idea where to start on that. I know a bit of 3d modeling, but not actual sculpting with my hands, so is casting off a good printed model a thing? Are there any resources for what kind of joints would be needed, especially when working with a non-human doll like a dragon tail or wings? She's been a beloved oc for years now, so I wanted her doll to BE her and not a repaint of anything else, but usually my work sticks to digital media so I'm a little lost porting her to a physical object, lol
Anyway, hope you have an awesome day! Your collection of dolls is gorgeous and I love the work you've done on the customs you've shared here
Hey there! these are a lot of questions, lets see where to start... First off - don't (ever) let the hobby intimidate you into not doing what you want to do. Making your own doll is a huge task with a steep learning curve, especially when it comes to joints. As for resources in general, I unfortunately don't have any links at hand. There's the BJD Sculptors group on facebook, and I know that there are a few videos on youtube from doll people on how to make joints in blender and similar programs.
Casting from a 3D print is a thing, yes! You'll have to print, sand and prime the doll beforehand though, or go through a caster who does that for you (like FantasyDoll!). If you plan to make the doll only for yourself though, I wouldn't bother with casting; 3D printed dolls are a thing, as Frapzilla proved (or Eve the cat studio, or Elleodolls..).
There is no 'you need this joint' guide on 4-(or more) legged dolls. Most, if not all joints are basically a sphere in a concave space; it really depends on the design and the kind of movement you want that determines the final shape. Maybe take a look at Dreamvalleys Dragons?
I absolutely recommend sketching out the full doll first to get a feel for proportions before diving into sculpting/jointing. Otherwise you'll have to adjust things later on, and while that's not that annoying in 3D, it's an absolute pain with real sculpting... speaking from experience here x.x I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
