The beautiful sakura (Japanese cherry blossoms) have bloomed! There are viewing areas all over Japan every spring for this gorgeous occasion. Shops sell sakura-themed items ranging from food to clothes, and there are even boat tours you can take to view the trees. Kiku enjoys partaking in hanami "flower viewing" every year. This year, she managed to get a boat tour at Chidorigafuchi Moat, one of the most popular viewing spots. She's also enjoying walking along the Okazaki Canal and Philosopher's Path trails while savoring some sakura-flavored treats.

Thirty years ago today (March 30, 1994), the classic animated film Thumbelina was released. Though she's not a Disney princess, she was voiced by one - Jodi Benson, aka Ariel of The Little Mermaid. Coincidentally, both of these fairy tales were written by Hans Christian Anderson. To commemorate this milestone, I'm sharing my old photos of the custom Thumbelina doll I made about five years ago. For behind the scenes of how this was done, click here!

Easter is almost upon us! Has anyone else dyed Easter eggs this year? I absolutely love these adorable Miniverse spring capsules! The baskets are definitely my favorite. And what a cool idea to dye the eggs! I only wish they were all different - every picture and video I've seen show the same eggs, so they all have the same six designs. Fortunately, they'd be easy enough to replicate. Enjoy this short vide of me helping Kenleigh get her eggs ready!

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day! Kenleigh is ready - she's got her decorations out, and her lucky Care Bear. :D I've also decided to stop moving the large wolf picture above the fireplace back and forth when I have a wreath up there and just have a wreath for all holidays/seasons. Which means I'll need two of each since I also have the front door LOL.

It's March 3, which means it's time for hinamatsuri! Kiku loves checking out this festival every year. A Japanese festival with a big emphasis on dolls? We're both there! She's currently enjoying two different displays.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hinamatsuri is an annual festival in Japan known as the doll festival or girls' day. The day is meant to celebrate having a daughter. The festival was traditionally known as the Peach Festival, as peach trees typically began to flower around this time. This is no longer true since the shift to Gregorian dates, but the name remains and peaches are still symbolic of the festival.
The primary aspect of the festival is the display of festival dolls in an elaborate fashion. Layers of dolls are displayed, with the emperor and empress on the top. The most recent emperor and empress were enthroned in 2019, marking the start of the Reiwa Era. While there are many ways to display these dolls, a full set of festival dolls includes seven platforms as follows:
1. Emperor & empress 2. Ladies of the court 3. Musicians 4. Ministers 5. Servants 6. Personal items of the royal court 7. More personal items of the royal court, plus hishi mochi

That was the new 2023 Re-Ment Hinamatsuri set. I also have this set in my collection from 2011, which features only the emperor and empress.

During this special time, girls also receive special sweets made of rice called hishi mochi. These sweets come in three colors: pink (meant to chase away evil spirits), white (symbolizes purity), and green (symbolizes health). The shape is believed to have originated in the Edo period, and to be a representation of fertility.
Handmade dolls are given to a young girl in February in a glass case, which is displayed prominently until March 3, then put away until next year (leaving them up on March 4 is believed to be unlucky and result in a late marriage for daughter). In many areas, the maternal grandparents still present the dolls.
This concludes today's daily cultural lesson. Enjoy!

Happy Valentine's Day! In Japan, Feb. 14 is when girls tend to give chocolate to boys they like. On March 14, also called White Day, boys give chocolate to girls they like. :D Not sure if Kiku has a boy she likes, but she'll enjoy the chocolate regardless!

Today is not only Kansas Day - it's also the 65th anniversary of one of Disney's classic movies - Sleeping Beauty! Yes, Barbie isn't the only blonde beauty turning 65 this year lol. On Jan. 29, 1959, Sleeping Beauty was released. So I'll be sharing photos paying tribute to one of our classic Disney princesses. :)
Up first - the 65-year-old question: the pink dress or the blue dress? Which dress do you prefer? I like them both, so it's hard to pick a favorite lol

A crown to wear in grace and beauty:

Aren't those little fairy dolls cute? I didn't realize they made them until about a year ago, and I found them in a big Sleeping Beauty gift set that included Aurora, Phillip, Maleficent, and Samson. I searched and found the fairies by themselves, but that price was almost as much as the entire gift set, so I got the latter lol. The fairies are vital characters in this movie!
From left: Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather:
Tumblr media
Did you have a favorite fairy? I loved Merriweather as a kid, and her chasing the crow always cracked me up!
"Touch the spindle. Touch it, I say!"
Tumblr media
Speaking of that spinning wheel, let's not forget that this movie gave us one of the most popular/iconic villains of all time - Maleficent. She has quite the fan base, even from before the live action version in 2014.

Happily ever after (dancing in the clouds with the dress changing colors):

Fun Facts:
~ Aurora’s pink vs. blue dress debate in the movie was also a debate among the filmmakers. They decided to put their argument into the film.
~ Speaking of Aurora’s dress, despite the fact that she wears the blue dress the majority of the time, her doll form - along with promo images and other merchandise - is most often featured wearing the pink variant. This is speculated to be because when the storybook closes at the very end of the movie, the dress is pink (two of the three fairies are changing it from pink to blue during the final dance number), which made it “official.” There is also speculation that, since Cinderella had been released a few years prior, and she was also wearing a blue dress (and was blonde as well), Disney wanted Aurora to be different.
~ Aurora has the least lines of any Disney princess. She has a total of 18 in her entire movie. In fact, she speaks less than any other main character in a Disney film apart from the mute Dumbo.
~ Aurora’s prince, Phillip, was the first Disney prince to be given an official name (the two previous princes were both referred to as The Prince and/or Prince Charming).
~ Aurora was the last princess to be created before Walt Disney’s death. He passed away in 1966, 23 years before the next princess (which would be Ariel in 1989).

Happy Kansas Day! Let's face it - when someone thinks of Kansas, their first thought is The Wizard of Oz. :D So with that in mind, I had to do something for my state's birthday. I happened to have this dress, shirt, shoes, and doll in my collection, so I went with a more anime theme for Dorothy. :)

Today's Monday 4 Dolls theme on Instagram is Blue Monday. Christmas may be over, but winter is in full swing. Abbey and Alisa are adding more decorations to their tree that will stay up until February. :D I'm really enjoying these mini trees. I have a few different themed ones, and I have what I need for next Christmas to make more. This one is the winter/snow themed one, featuring lots of blue, white, and silver ornaments, snowflakes, and blue lights. I should try to find some icicles too... I had some of those on an old tree when I was a kid and I have no idea what happened to any of that LOL. We also have blue, white, and silver presents under the tree plus a blue snowflake tree skirt. :)

It's January 11, which means it's time for kagami biraki!
To conclude the Japanese New Year celebrations, kagami biraki, literally meaning "opening the mirror" or breaking of the mochi, is typically held on January 11. The term "kagami" translates to "mirror," and "biraki" means "opening" or "to break." The ceremony involves removing the round-shaped mochi from the family altar and breaking them into smaller pieces before cooking them in dessert or soup to enjoy. Eating the mochi symbolizes a prayer for health and good fortune in the New Year.
To break open the ornamental mochi, one should never cut it with a knife. The action is a reminder of ritual disembowelment from ancient times, and it is considered a sign of bad luck. For that reason, the customary way to break the mochi is with a wooden hammer or with one’s hands. These days, it's very common for people to buy a plastic decorative kagami mochi at a store, which the small mochi pieces are inside.
Kiku has prepared the mochi for the ceremonial opening - she even found a large wooden hammer like in ancient times. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the mochi is broken open, it's customary to cook the smaller pieces in dessert or soup. A common dish is zenzai, which is red bean soup with mochi. That's what Kiku went for this year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time to enjoy that soup! Mmmm
