i keep seeing people in their late teens/early twenties having a "[X] content intended for younger audiences does not feel satisfying to me anymore but i don't know where to start to branch out into adult fiction" moment and i thought i would give some recommendations for adult fiction for my fellow creepy crawly queer people. all or at least a LOT of it will be on the darker and more fucked up side bc i primarily engage with horror and thriller media personally but feel free to add on with more or recommendations from other genres :)
edit: i am continuing to add to this list so there might be new recs (highlighted in pink) in here every once in a while! also want to add that there's a variety of POC, queer, and disabled authors in here as well, i am also all of the above (asian, bi/aro, poly, disabled) and tried to incorporate as many of their wickedly talented, compelling narratives as possible. that's all, happy reading!

black women are constantly put under a microscope when it comes to their pain or their trauma, like the rest of the world feels like they ‘deserve’ to know everything about their struggles, and it’s so refreshing to see characters like dre from swarm (2023) and taissa in yellowjackets rejecting the people that want to rip their secrets out of them

Title: Dead Hot (2024-?)
Channel: Amazon Prime.
Origin: British.
Genres: Mystery, comedy, and thriller.
Runtime: Season 1 has 6 episodes. No news yet about the possibility of a second season.
This show feels: Mysterious and exciting.
Premise: Elliot and Jess, who are best friends, are both grieving the disappearance of Elliot's boyfriend and Jess's brother Peter. Peter vanished five years ago, and they haven't heard a thing until Jess gets an exciting new clue.
Themes explored by the show: Murder mystery, grief and longing, friendship.
Representation & marginalized voices: Both leads are people of color. One of the main characters is gay and there are also several queer side characters. Several of the side characters are nonwhite. The show has a good balance of male and female characters.

I've been a longtime Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju fanatic. The historical theme is so well-done, it's engaging, the messy queer vibes are immaculate. I also love Banana Fish for its grungy city ambience, heart-wrenching romance and suspense.
I just finished watching Monster, which to me felt like a combination of the two (plus several other elements of course). It's seinen but honestly you could have fooled me—Women characters play prominent roles and are written to feel so real. There are subtle feminist undertones throughout, and sexual assault is very, very rarely used as a plot point. There's no service, and bodies are drawn so beautifully. There is a sense of precision towards each character’s race, backstory, and personality that also reflects in their design, no matter how unimportant they are. (Kenzo Tenma in particular was so swoon-worthy in the plain, fresh, Ghibli-esque way.)
Highly, highly recommended. Go watch it on Netflix, right now.

(The animation is already spectacular, but there are also upscaled versions of the episodes available online somewhere if you'd like better quality.)
