I don't understand people who hate Alma because imagine that in one (1) day you:
give birth to triplets (that should be enough)
are forced to flee your home (way more than enough)
are forced to walk for God knows how long (after having just given birth??? to fucking triplets???????)
have to watch your husband get murdered to save your family
I repeat, have to watch your husband whom you love SO dearly DIE a brutal death
this also means seeing the beginning of a war that's going to last three years btw
and it also means raising three children on your own with no family to back you up and no previous experience
get elected mayor of a town that just appeared out of thin air
man, if I have to leave the house I feel like crying, doesn't this woman deserve a fucking break???
Tumblr media
and she also still finds the strength to smile and wave at Casita

I just watched Encanto for the first time and here’s my rundown of the Madrigals’ gifts:
Antonio: The rats told me my uncle is in the walls.
Mirabel: I’m the family therapist that keeps this house together… literally.
Camilo: I can shape-shift!
Dolores: …I need to go live with monks.
Isabela: Don’t make your abuela a flower, or you will be forced into godhood.
Luisa: Eldest Daughter Syndrome
Pepa: If I’m emotionally unstable, so is the sky!
Julieta: I heal people through the sheer power of arepas.
Bruno: I can tell you if your house will break down, and you’re asking me if your hairline is receding??? At age 50??????
Alma: Candle.

Just like all the other Madrigals, Dolores is a character I really feel bad for, even if we didn’t get to know her as much. Not only does she hear EVERYONE’S problems, everyone’s secrets and yet say anything or react to it, but according to Jared Bush, she always felt she was in Isablea’s shadow, and even though the film didn’t explore that, I can definitely believe it.
Tumblr media
According to Jared, Dolores is 21, the same age as Isabela, yet she is slightly younger. She was born on August 31st, whereas Isabela was born on August 7th, both on the same year I’m assuming. Keeping Isabela’s golden child and perfect praise in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if when the two girls were growing up, the focus was mainly always on Isabela, and why wouldn’t it be? She was beautiful, could grow flowers, and the future looked bright for her. I definitely think that Alma and the family thought that Isabela would grow and do wonderful things due to her power, and then there’s Dolores, who has super hearing. While her gift is definitely useful, I wouldn’t be surprised if people only asked her for things regarding that, and that’s it. Now that’s not to say I don’t think her parents, her two uncles, and Alma showered her with love when they could, but I think it’s clear that Isabela would be looked up to more, admired more. I definitely feel like Dolores went through the same phase Mirabel did, where she feels like no one really gets her, no one really pays attention to her or sees her entirely, thanks to Isablea being in the spotlight, as well as Dolores herself being a quiet oddball. It of course also doesn’t help when she figures out the man that she loves will be marrying her cousin that everyone adores, and all Dolores can do is be quiet and stand by while it happens, watching in pain. The thing is, we know that Dolores likes to slip a few things of what she knows out to the public, and a sad theory I have is I definitely picture Abuela being stern once and awhile after she caught her granddaughter saying something she shouldn’t have. It’s just sad to think about how Dolores hears everything, yet most of the time she has to keep her mouth shut in fear of rocking the boat or causing a commotion. She has to stand to the side, wether she likes it or not. I also love how she whispers most of the time, she’s clearly sensitive to loud noises and all, as she covers her ears when it’s loud, and claps with her fingers. Keeping that in mind, it pains me to also think about how due to that, she can’t really be loud, be expressive and have fun, which made me happy to see her singing aloud during “All Of You”. Anyway, she’s a very interesting character who has her own dose of angst to explore, people always ask her what she hears, but what about her? I really want to see more of her and her perspective, and since Adassa has recently said on her TikTok that she will be “Doing some things with Disney”, here’s to hoping! 🧡🎼🎧

for the past week and when i was in hospital, for some reason all i can think about is a cross over with encanto and big hero 6 (the encanto characters in the world of big hero 6), and what their hero outfits would look like/what weapons they would have. (i went on an entire ramble about this on discord, sorry about that) this is what i got:
for antonio, he would have robotic bird wings on the back of his that allow him to fly with the birds and a helmet like go-go's with the spike on the back and a spike at the front resembling a bird beak. his outfit being yellow and red. i doubt he would have a weapon given that he is 5 years old, but i can see his animal friends fighting along side him, all of them wearing similar helmets to antonio except they would have have helmets to match them (for example, parce would have multiple points on the front of his to match his teeth, or pico would have a longer spike at the front to match his beak)
for luisa, she would have really big metal gauntlet like gloves that cover/protect her elbows as well as big metal boots that cover/protect her knees, the rims of every metal plate that make up the gauntlets and boots outlined with blue. she would still have her skirt but would have body armour on as well as a helmet. i dont think she would need a weapon, maybe small retractable spikes on her knuckles or something
for camilo, i think his outfit would probably have less armour and more flexible fabric so have can shape shift freely without his outfit becoming too big or too small, like armour would cover his knees, elbows, his torso and back, as well as goggles like wasabis. his armour being orange with his chameleon pattern on  while the fabric is dark brown
for isabela, very similar to honey lemon except her skirt is longer and has the splattered design as well as flowers on (like her dress at the end of the movie), and without the bag too. like luisa, i dont think she would really need a weapon as shes got her plants and all that
for felix, dunno why (i think its because of that scene where he saves antonio from being crushed by his door during the scene where casita collapses. plus in a lot of his promo images, hes carrying an umbrella which acts as a shield against the rain or sun) i can imagine him having a shield with a sun pattern on to match his wife. armour wise, not really sure, maybe something like wasabis but it being pale yellow
for bruno.... i genuinely have no idea. absolutely no idea. i can see him wearing green goggles with the pointy bits at the side. i cant imagine him taking off his ruana to be honest, and i can see him constantly carrying a vision plate that connected to wires but i have no idea what would be on it or what the wires lead to/do. i dunno, im stumped on that one
for agustin. armour. lots of armour. weapon wise, no idea. im stumped on him too to be honest, i genuinely have no idea. all i know is that his armour would be dark blue
for julieta, i can see her wearing a tactical belt with the pockets full of herbs and spices. (this idea was more of a joke that made me laugh but now i cant stop thinking about it. you know how in the movie she literally shoves food into peoples mouths to heal them? well what if she fired them into their mouths using a gun like weapon on her arm that she uses to fire arepas at people to either heal people or attack?........im very sleep deprived). her armour being light blue
for pepa, i cant see her using a weapon but i can see her outfit being similar to honey lemons as well but instead of a helmet, its goggles so that her hair braid is free (plus i like the details in the movie where he hair sticks up whenever she has a lightning cloud above her due to the static) with her armour being yellow with lightning patterns on it
mirabel, i had a bit of trouble thinking of something and sorry if this sounds stupid but i remembered the scene where she used rope from the broken rope bridge in bruno's room to make her own rope swing to get across the gap, so i thought "..huh, maybe something like that", so i can see her using a really long rope made out of different colour wool that she uses as a lasso or something (kinda like matching isabela with her vines), with each bit of her armour being a different colour. she'd still have her skirt but she'd have a helmet and armour to protect her torso and shoulders
for dolores, big ear muffs to protect her hearing as well as red armour with the soundwave patterns to protect her arms, legs and torso. weapon wise, i thought about this, not sure if it would work at all given her gift but i can see dolores using a weapon with makes soundwaves into a weapon (hence the reason why shes wearing ear muffs), dunno if that would work or not
for abuela alma, i had a very stupid idea that made me laugh, i imagined a scene where everyone (felix, agustin, pepa, julieta, camilo, dolores, luisa, isabela, mirabel, antonio and bruno are nearly defeated in a battle with a bad guy, but before they can give out the final blow, this giant as hell robot flies in and defeats the bad guy. everyone is completely clueless on who it is until the middle opens up revealed flipping abuela alma sitting in a chair controlling the robot. she only comes into the battle if her entire family is defeated, which is pretty rare
sorry about my ramble, ive had this in my mind for 2 weeks now
what do you guys think, what do you think theyre outfits would look like and what their weapons would be? (honestly i would love you guys’s opinions on this)

Reblog and put in the tags what one thing you would change about Encanto if you had the opportunity to.
#i would replace camilo with fuega the girl we saw in the concept art who had fire powers#no really#parents and children butt heads all the time and we don’t really see that so much in the movie?#well barring bruno and mirabel vs alma that is#but i would love a situation like merida and elinor in brave#with fuega being this very hot-tempered and excuse my pun but FIERY teenage daughter whom pepa finds hard to get in line#especially since their personalities and powers would be very similar but not too similar since fuega can obviously control only fire#and not the weather#and regardless of whether or not fuega’s powers are activated by her emotions she would still have an angry temper to go with it#as opposed to just general emotional hypersensitivity and anxiety#and in the end they’d learn to mediate their relationship and not constantly be at each other’s throats#with fuega learning to obey her mother more and pepa learning that her daughter is her own person and to let her have free will#and to listen to her wants and needs#they could even do a thing where pepa gets this attitude from alma doing the same to her since children with toxic family influences#often inherit those same toxic traits#and once she realizes it she feels bad about it and stops#likewise fuega realizes that how she feels is exactly how her mother feels and boom family bonding#we’d definitely be looking at a much different and much longer movie though but this is just speculation anything goes as long as it’s sfw#plus it would give the wcf more spotlight AND dolores would have a sister#she’d be the mediator between the two and they’d probably be the good daughter bad daughter lol but ultimately they still love each other

Day 28 - Transformation
G, 500 words, Alma & Isabela
--
Alma can’t watch it happen because she knows she will complain too loudly, so she respectfully does not look on as Pepa snips away the long beautiful locks on her niece’s head. Isabela has always taken such good care of her hair, her healthy curls at her waist bouncing with every twirl, toss, and step. She won’t be needing her lotions anymore, Alma thinks as she waits.
It is her granddaughter's decision to change whatever she wants about herself, and Alma has promised to be lenient, understanding, and most importantly, not…as involved as she used to be.
With the splitting of the mountains came an influx of modern ideas, including fashion choices that made the men and women of the Encanto raise a few eyebrows. Mirabel, the little socialite, met a newcomer who brought a collection of fashion magazines with her. In those fashion magazines, women dress in new silhouettes, shoes, pants, waistlines, whatever else the world outside has come up with over the past fifty years.
And there were new hairstyles. Very…Alma was loath to say it — very short hairstyles. She saw the picture in the fashion magazine. She had watched as Pepa took it with her and placed it on her vanity for reference. At that point, Alma left her room.
A few tears roll down her cheeks when Isabela arrives downstairs with her hair shorn up to the nape of her neck. She smiles next to Pepa who looks proudly on, happy, but with the way Isabela holds her hands clenched at her sides, it’s evident she’s anticipating her grandmother’s opinion, waiting for the ball to drop.
“Oh,” Alma says, hand on her chest. “It is different.”
“Yep,” Isabela replies, hand stroking her neck. She has her head cocked. With her hair short, it starts to curl at the root instead of the ends at the small of her back. Pepa has styled it well; nothing about the way her curls sit on her head would fit a man, at least. Alma must admit it frames her round face very nicely, making it look more open now - perhaps even gentler than before when she was more womanly. No coquettish elegance. She looks like a babe. It is too strange. Her dress seems too big on her now.
There is a question on her lips that Alma knows Isabela can’t ask her abuela just yet, so Alma answers it for her. “Pepa did a good job. It looks like the picture, no? Very stylish, but new.” Pepa beams and squeezes Isabela’s shoulder. “Come, turn around.” Alma stands up from her chair and makes a beckoning motion with her hands. Her granddaughter obliges as she always does and shows off her new cut from all angles.
Alma can’t help but weep a bit more. She will get used to it, and she does, eventually. Isabela is her own person.
So when she shows up in her father’s suit, hemmed by Mirabel, one afternoon, Alma only has a minor heart attack.

If the Madrigals were in the modern AU, which social media (like Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter....) would each and everyone prefer to use in your opinion?
This was fun! Some of these aren’t social media apps per se (sorry!)... but most of them have a social aspect to them.
Alma
An organizational/time management app like Slack.
What she needs: an app that links you to a therapist, like Talkspace - this goes for the entire family
Julieta
She likes to browse the videos on Kitchen Stories and even posts some of her own
What she also enjoys: Discord - she, Agustín, and their daughters have a group chat (Julieta loves the stickers/reacting to posts with emojis)
Pepa
She listens to books on Audible
What she needs: a meditation app like Calm
Bruno:
An art/drawing app like Procreate - he has an Instagram for his art (at the kids’ insistence)
Also, a streaming app that allows him to keep up with his favorite telenovelas
Agustín
What he uses: Duolingo
What he must use: a password manager
Félix
A karaoke app - Agustín and Bruno have the app on their phones too (FAB Trio karaoke nights)
What he also enjoys: Pinterest - he pins things that he thinks Pepa would like, including funny memes (does the same for his kids)
Isabela
She sells plants and dyes on Etsy; I could see her using BeReal too
Also, a gardening app like Planta
Dolores
A star-gazing app - for her and Mariano
What she also enjoys: SoundCloud
Luisa
An app like Headspace or Calm
She also watches videos of puppies and other animals on YouTube
Camilo
What he uses: TikTok
What he shouldn’t use: TikTok
Mirabel
Kindle and Goodreads (she likes to read biographies and memoirs as well as fantasy)
She’s definitely on Tumblr
Antonio
He’s five, so he shouldn’t to be on social media. But his favorite app is World Wildlife Fund Together. His mami and papi, Tío Bruno, and Mirabel have the app on their phones.

Doors (Chapter 26) Into the woods
Chapter 25: Into the Woods
Summary:
Things get a bit tricky from here...hoping I don't lose track of anyone
-----------------
As Pepa sat Bruno down the rats with him scurried forward. Two from behind his hair, and the two in his shirt pocket. They squeaked furiously at Pepa, and she drew back, but was not put off. Bruno said, “They’re just hungry,” he went to get up but was stopped when he noticed what Julieta had in her hand. The small cloth covered bundle likely had some food for the rats.
“I was going to give this to you at supper,” she said giving him that look she used on her kids when they were being irresponsible.
“Thanks, Juli,” Bruno said a bit sheepishly.
“Oh, can I feed them Tío?” Luisa asked. Bruno nodded so Julieta handed the food to her, and she smiled as she moved closer. She collected the four who were with him and went to the wall of cubbies where the rest of Bruno’s friends were waiting. She was going to be an awesome vet.
“Okay, no more stalling,” Pepa said leaning back in, “Spill it hermanito.” As much as being called little brother used to irritate him, Bruno discovered it was something he actually missed. Not that he’d never let Pepa know that, but he smiled as Julieta said, “Hermanita, personal space.”
Someone snickered in the background and Pepa shot Juli a look. The small cloud that appeared winked in and out of existence in the space of a few seconds and Bruno had to admit he was very impressed. It put a smile over his dour expression that he’d been hanging on to in hopes of getting his family to leave. Pepa patted his head and was actually smiling as she moved away from him to stand next to the chair Félix was sitting in. Again, Bruno was taken aback by how different everything was. The fact that his mother had not said a word was also something he was not used to. She usually always had something to say on everything. She was there on the sofa with Mirabel who was listening wide-eyed to whatever his mother was whispering about. Bruno decided he didn’t want to know but as he watched them, she turned to him and asked, “So Bruno, just tell us. Does that door lead to the Church of St. Agustín in Bogotá?”
Everyone and everything went silent, including the rats as Bruno cleared his throat and said trying his hardest to sound conversational and not too excited, “Yes. It is a beautiful Church by the way, stayed for afternoon Mass.” From there Bruno recounted his adventures. From his walk through the plaza shops, to his conversations with Pedro the appliance salesman. The radio, he saved for the very last. It garnered a lot of attention when he pulled it out and turned it on. The crackle of the white noise elicited several ooos and aaahs. Julieta frowned when he told her that he’d traded her bottle for it. He wanted to feel bad about it but was so pleased with the device he found he could not muster a proper level of guilt to be sorry.
“What’s done is done,” she said and asked, “Was it at least empty?”
“Yes, I mean he was actually more interested in glass…said his wife collects such things.”
“Odd,” Pepa said, and a tiny cloud formed over her.
“Said the lady with the cloud,” Bruno quipped and Pepa threw a pillow from the sofa at him. It bounced off his head and he picked it up, pulling at the fringe along the border. One more detail to tell them. “There is one other thing…my Gift was active outside the Encanto.”
Uproar ensued and Dolores immediately shouted for quiet. Bruno liked that his sobrina was doing more than just covering her ears when people got too loud around her. She’d not only stepped out of Isa’s shadow she was casting one. After a round of apologies, there were discussions regarding how this could be useful. Agustín had knelt next to his wife, he looked over at Luisa then he nodded before he straightened. Pepa was listening to Félix with a surprised look and nodding every once in a while, she glanced over at him and smiled when she realized he was looking at her. Isabela had a faraway look as she gazed out his window. It was no secret she wanted to leave the Encanto and travel. Dolores and Camilo were now next to their parents listening intently. Mirabel was off the sofa and moved closer to Luisa who was still feeding bits of arepa to the rats. She reached up and tugged gently on her sister’s arm to get her attention and said, “This is so exciting, Luisa. I wonder how close the church is to the college?” Luisa paused and smiled, clearly not wanting to get her hopes up.
“It would be nice if it was,” she said noncommittally, and noticed Mirabel was petting the smallest of the rats he’d named Pepito. “You wanna feed a couple?” Luisa asked.
“Yes.”
Luisa broke off a piece of cheese from the bundle and seeing that new food item sent the rodents into a short frenzy. Bruno smiled remembering the time he’d raided the larder and brought back some cake along with the arepa’s he usually pilfered. The rats with him then, had pretty much the same reaction. Ah, the good old bad days, he thought. Bruno rubbed his temples twisted his neck to try and loosen his muscles. It wasn’t a sponty, those he couldn’t put off. This was a full-on vision and those he could delay for a short time. It irritated him that something in the ether was once again demanding his attention and he thought, ‘Seriously, can’t this wait?’
It was his mother who noticed from her seat on the sofa. She was not really interacting with anyone unless they spoke to her first but was carefully watching everyone else. To Bruno, she appeared to be nervous and just a little anxious, but she looked mostly calm? At the moment she was watching him, and Bruno meant to smile, but instead his teeth clenched when his neck went stiff.
She looked genuinely concerned as she got up and said, “I think,” and she raised her voice just enough to be heard over everyone else, “it’s time for us to go. We can talk about this more after breakfast. The town meeting has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00, so it would be best if everyone got some rest.” She turned toward him then and said, “Bruno, please don’t go off on your own without at least letting someone know what you’re doing. What if you’d been hurt? Or the door locked on the other side, and we could not get you back?”
Bruno’s teeth unclenched as his half smile turned into a full one and he said, “I won’t Mama. I’m sorry if I worried you.” She nodded, accepting his answer and Bruno once again was taken aback by the change or rather return of her younger self. The one that was trusting, patient and kind with her family. His family began filing out of his room, quietly chatting and as Mirabel walked past him, Bruno felt a half-remembered twinge. It took him by surprise because it was something that he’d not felt for a really long time, though he knew it somehow was related to his Gift and to magic itself. It was also something he’d never completely understood. It was that unexpected that even though he wanted everyone out he said, “Félix, Gus, can you both stay for a minute?”
Agustín nodded and Félix raised an eyebrow as both sat back on the sofa. His sisters stopped and Julieta asked, “Is everything okay, Bruno?”
Bruno did not remember whether he had ever talked to either of his sisters about this quirk. It only happened twice and both time it had spooked him for days. He did not want to worry them or even try and explain it, so he nodded and said, “Just need to get my cuñados opinions on something,” and hefted the radio he was still holding hoping it would do for an answer. Though neither seemed convinced, Julieta nodded, but Pepa fixed him with an appraising look as they exited and shut the door.
He sat for a moment in silence and said before he started, “Doli, I love you sobrina, but would you mind? Your Dad and Tío too.” This caused Félix and Agustín exchanged worried looks, but he needed to sort this out.
Bruno sat in silence for a few more minutes, he still had the pillow Pepa had tossed and was pulling at the fringe trying to find the best way of telling his cuñados what he was thinking. The problem he was facing was that he was not sure what he was thinking. But the feeling that something was off would not subside, and it had everything to do with the things he’d been seeing lately.
“Bruno,” Agustín said, “Just say whatever it is.”
Félix nodded and nudged him, “Does it have something to do with the red door?”
Bruno looked up and said, “No, it’s more to do with the spontys I’ve been having lately and the sketches I drew for Mamá.”
“The ones about the people in the forest?”
“Yes. I don’t think I’ve been looking at them properly.”
Félix and Agustín exchanged looks and Agustín said, “In what way?”
“I don’t know, just a feeling I got, but I think I need to gather them all up and look at them again.”
“The kids had some of them in Isabela’s room earlier,” Félix said.
“And a vision tablet.” Agustín added.
“Right,” Bruno said, and he went to the desk and pulled out another small stack of sketches. As they headed toward the door, he pushed back the need to deal with the vision waiting for him. Hopefully, it could wait a few hours.
------------------------
(…Doli, I love you sobrina, but would you mind? Your Dad and Tío too...)
Dolores squeaked and immediately shut out their voices. She’d made a promise to the family and herself that she wouldn’t try to eavesdrop on family conversations. Especially if she was specifically asked not to. They’d gone back to Isa’s room to talk about their plans some more, with Mira, Luisa, and Camilo. Everyone noticed her jump but didn’t ask. They knew she’d tell them if it was needful. The thing was it was harder to not listen than listen…so she decided to cast her hearing toward the mountains. Good distraction that. While she was not expecting to hear anything, she was surprised to hear a dog. It was growling.
A woman’s voice (…chhh…) the voice had a strange echo to it. A cave maybe?
The dog went silent, but Dolores could hear the dog panting as well as the breathing of several people. She focused on each realizing a good number of them were children. Tío sketches showed her this woman’s face. Dolores was sure they were one in the same. She moved further from her family so as not to be distracted and sat on Isabela’s bed keeping her eyes focused on the floor. Camilo knew what she was doing, he’d seen her do this before. His voice was hollow, like he was in another room as she faintly heard him say, “Everyone stay quiet.”
After a few minutes Dolores could hear the sound of at least five maybe six people walking on stony ground. But it was a slow walk, everyone must be very tired. The group came to a halt.
A man’s voice (…You said their tracks went this way old man…) there was a dangerous note of anger there.
Older man (…The ground here is extremely hard, and there’s been no rain. Sign is harder to see in those conditions. Perhaps they doubled back…) This man was lying.
1st man (…I’m tired of your excuses…) there was no answer from the old man, instead Dolores heard the sound of someone being struck quite hard, followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground.
2nd man (…It’s getting dark, we should head back to camp…)
There was no audible answer from the 1st man only movement of some kind.
2nd man (…what about him?...)
1st man (…leave him…)
2nd ma (…alright everyone, looks like another dead end, Back to camp…)
There were grunts but none contradicted the order, so the group left but were not moving much faster than when they’d arrived. Dolores followed the sound of their steps until she couldn’t hear them anymore and looked up to see her brother and primas all in front of her. Mirabel was on her knees holding the vision tablet tightly to her with her sisters on either side and Camilo in front. Her concern for these people must have been showing on her face because they were praying, but silently. Dolores refocused her attention on the woman’s breathing. She was calmer now and Dolores listened for the children. One was weeping quietly almost silently.
Woman (…They’ve gone, okay, mis pequeños. Water for everyone then it’s time to go…)
2nd Woman (…Doris, they need to eat…)
Doris (…I know, mi vida, but we cannot stay here. We need to put as much distance between us and them as we can…)
Inez (…What about Fernando?...)
There was a pause, and Doris said, (…He’ll follow if he can…)
Inez (…At least let me give them some bread and cheese…)
Doris (…Fine, they can eat while they walk…)
Dolores squeaked but made a mental note of where the voices were coming from. Everyone looked at her and she said, “They’re close enough for me to hear them, but still a ways off. Just on the edge. Like Tío said, they are being pursued.” Dolores gestured to Mirabel, and she handed her the tablet. Dolores turned it around and pointed to the angry woman. “I believe her name is Doris, and the woman behind her is Inez. There’s someone else, an older man named Fernando but…” Luisa was going through the sketches and held up one of an older man and younger who appeared to be arguing. “That one,” Dolores said pointing to the older man, “That must be Fernando...I’m not completely sure but he was doing his best to slow the pursuers down. All I could tell for sure was that he was not telling the other the truth.”
“Was?” Isabela asked.
Dolores paused and said taking the sketch. “I believe he is the leader of that group,” she said and pointed to the younger man in the sketch, “This one is dangerous. He struck this other man and left him unconscious in the mountains.”
“What?” Isa said as she stood up, “Should we try and find them?”
“I don’t know how we could. I only have a very general idea of where they are.”
“How many do you think?” Luisa asked.
“I don’t know. There were at least five, maybe six others with this one. They talked about going back to a camp before dark. I couldn’t follow their steps for more than a few minutes.”
Dolores looked to her brother, but he was watching Mirabel, who was sitting off to the side, her fingers tapping on her knees. She did not seem to be paying attention but was instead staring past everyone, looking at no one. Thing was, while it may not seem like Mirabel was listening, she was listening. Camilo looked back at Dolores as he moved to squat down in front of Mirabel asking quietly, “Hey there, prima, what’s going on in that head of yours?” She didn’t answer so Camilo gave her a poke “…Mira?”
Mirabel started and looked around for a moment as if just remembering what she was doing and said, “Sorry, I was just thinking about the path in the tower,” she said as she got up, “When Tío brought me up there before, I thought I heard someone calling out for help. I thought it was my imagination. Now I’m not so sure.”
Dolores still holding the tablet was moving then toward the door. “Where are you going?” Isabela asked.
“The tower,” Dolores replied, “If the voices are louder there, then perhaps we can get to them more quickly.”
Luisa already collected the sketches, and everyone was up and moved into the hallway, walking quickly toward the tower stairs, except for Mirabel who was heading toward her room, “I’ll catch up,” she said over her shoulder.
“I’ll go with her,” Luisa said handing off the paper to Isabela and followed after her sister who had not slowed.
The rest of the group continued on only to stop again when Tío Bruno’s door opened and her father and Tíos came into the hallway. “Where are you three off to?”
Dolores said, “The tower.”
Her father looked at Tío Bruno and all three of them said, “No.”
“But why not?” Camilo asked.
“Reasons,” her father said.
“And those reasons are…?” Camilo was not one to talk back to their father and Dolores was wondering what he was thinking.
“Where are Mirabel and Luisa?” Tío Agustín asked.
“In her room,” Isa said.
“You know,” Tío Bruno said, and took the tablet from Dolores, “how about we all meet down in the dining room so we can discuss this.” And tapped the tablet. It made a soft ringing sound that Dolores found appealing.
Camilo had grown more independent since the breaking and did not like being told he couldn’t go somewhere. Dolores elbowed his arm to forestall him saying something else and said, “Okay Tío,” and pulled her brother after her toward the stairs. Isabela had her arms crossed and she heard Tío Agustín say, “I’ll explain downstairs, Isa.”
Camilo pulled his arm loose and halted on the landing. “Quit dragging me around like I’m five, Dolores.”
“I’m sorry Camilo, but I needed to get you away.”
“Why?”
“Something’s wrong, I can hear it in their voices,” Dolores said. “Mostly Tío Bruno.”
Isa caught up with Dolores and Camilo on the stairs. “They seem really weirded out,” Isa said and together they entered the kitchen to find their mothers and Abuela having tea and chatting.
“What brings you three down here?” her mother asked.
Before they could answer that Tía Julieta asked, “Are those Bruno’s sketches?”
“Yes,” Isabela said and set them on the table, “We were going to go up to the tower to see if Doli could hear them better up there.”
“You can hear them, Corazón?” her mother asked.
Dolores nodded and said, “Only just.”
“Then where are Mirabel and Luisa?”
“Mirabel’s roo-” Dolores paused as she answered.
“No, no she is not,” her father said walking into dining room.
“She’s in the tower now,” Dolores said.
“She must have gone to the tower from my room,” Abuela said getting up, “Was the door missing?”
“Yes,” Félix answered.
“Dios Mio,” Tía Julieta said sounding quite vexed and she was up as well.
“Luisa is with her, Mamá. She won’t let her do anything too Mirabel-ish.” Isa said and shook her head.
Tía Julieta nodded but started for the stairs.
“Gus and Bruno went up there, I came to get you all.”
“Why not just tell me from where you were?” Dolores asked.
Félix’s eyebrows went up and he said, “Sorry, mi vida. Slipped my mind.”
Dolores smiled, that’s what he always said. Her Papí seldom to never tried to talk to her from a distance. He preferred speaking to people face to face, including her, regardless of how many times Abuela had told him he should. Dolores always found it to be the perfect distraction when the voices got to be a bit much. Dolores looked at everyone in the room and asked, “Where is Camilo?

Not enough (Bruno x Reader)

__________________
You sighed and tried to block the pain from your mind as you let Casita help you to the nearest chair. You were sick of this, of not being able to do things by yourself and having to depend not only on your family, but on the house itself. It's not that you weren't grateful, but each day you felt more like a burden than a person.
"Thank you Casita" you whispered
You didn't even pay attention to the little tile that waved in greeting, you were too busy gently rubbing your hands and trying to hold back the angry tears that stung in your eyes.
You really missed the time when you could do more things, when you could run, jump, cook, play with your nieces and nephew, when simply moving from one chair to another was not an almost impossible herculean task for you. A time that seemed so far away now.
It started just three years after your wedding. You and Bruno were at your best, just enjoying each other's company, being goofy and happy, you had even made plans to make your family bigger (even if he turned red as soon as you mentioned it), it was all so perfect. Until the first blackout.
It had happened out of nowhere, one moment you were buying books with Pepa and the next everything had suddenly gone dark. By the time you woke up, you were already at home, in your bed, with the whole family looking at you with concern while Julieta tried to bring down your fever. Your sister-in-law didn't know what caused it, and despite what she might say, the soft smiles she gave you and how much she cared for you, you knew that a part of her had never stopped feeling guilty, because no matter how much magical food she gave you, you never healed.
Things had only gotten worse for you since that day, blackouts occurring more and more frequently, your joints and muscles getting weaker, condemning you to a life of constant pain. At first, you didn't want to say anything, you didn't want to worry Bruno or give Julieta more work, but when Pepa had to carry you back in her arms because your legs couldn't bear your weight anymore, you had to admit that something was wrong with you.
Your husband hardly ever left your side since then, saying that he didn't help the town much anyway. Alma accepted it, too worried that something could happen to the person she saw as another child, Julieta scolded you for not going to her every time something hurt and Pepa had made it her mission not to lose sight of you in the strange times when her brother was not with you.
"You can't leave me alone with those two, Y/N" she had told you "I'd go crazy"
"You already are" you teased softly
She smiled at you, but you could see in her eyes the same fear that invaded them all. They never told you anything, but you knew that Bruno had tried to look into your future to find out how he could help you or what would happen to you, when would you get better? But he never shared that vision, and deep inside you knew the answer: you never would.
It was hard at first, but you were strong for him, because you knew that the only person more terrified than you was your husband. He was afraid of losing you, of not being able to do anything for you, and even though you felt the same fear of leaving him, you decided that you couldn't let that paralyze you, that regardless of whether you had much or little time left, you were going to enjoy it with your family.
Your nieces and nephew were quick to get used to your situation. Isabela tried to act as if she could take care of you by herself, she would spend afternoons with you after school and she would fill your hair with beautiful flowers to cheer you up when you felt bad. Often she and Camilo competed over who could make you smile the most.
Luisa was extremely careful with you. She had just gotten her gift just two years before and she was terrified of hurting you with her strength, so she was content to just talk to you from the door. Mirabel, your precious butterfly, was the one who kept you the most company.
The girl was a miracle, you had told Julieta, who lit up the whole room with her mere presence. It didn't matter if Pepa or Bruno were keeping you company, Mirabel was always, always by your side, telling you how her day had gone, what things she had found, showing you her drawings and simply making you feel warmer every time she smiled at you.
However, everyone knew that it was Dolores who took care of you the most. The girl was silent, but her gift had turned out to be the most useful in helping you. She was always aware of you, your heart rate, your breathing, everything. If you started to get agitated, the girl immediately warned any adult who was nearby, she was like your little personal sentinel, always watching over you even if she wasn't around.
So you weren't surprised when Bruno rushed into the kitchen, almost tripping over his own feet. You smiled lovingly at him when he dropped in front of you with concern etched on his face. You were pleasantly surprised how after so many years, he was still incredibly handsome in your eyes and how he could look at you with such love and adoration, as if he hadn't spent the last few years practically having to shadow you.
"What happened?" he asked worried
"Nothing" you smiled "I just got a little dizzy, but I'm fine, Casita helped me"
He smiled back gently, stroking the back of your hand with his thumb, his touch as light as a feather. That was another thing he knew you hated: that nowadays your conversations were just to say who had helped you. There were no longer funny stories, innocent gossip or funny anecdotes, your life was slowly ending between the same walls.
"Amor..." you whispered
"Yes?"
"...please"
Your husband's expression changed to one of intense pain. It wasn't the first time you had this conversation, that you begged him to tell you what he had seen in that vision. You weren't stupid, you knew there was no cure, otherwise Julieta's food would have already worked, you didn't want to know how it would happen, if it would be painful or if you would go off quietly between dreams. All you wanted to know was how much time you had.
"Y/N -" he started
"I need to know, Bruno" you interrupted him "I don't even know if I'll make it to next Christmas"
It was a depressing thought, because it was September, and if it weren't for the intense pain you felt all the time and that had gotten worse in recent weeks, you wouldn't be making such a suggestion knowing that Dolores was listening to you. But you felt that now was not the time to be careful.
"Mi vida-"
"Please" you begged "...just tell me, how much time do I have?"
Bruno looked at you with an intense mix of fear, pain, and regret, but with a flash of love, love so deep you could almost feel it in your very bones. He sighed and took your hands gently. His grip was shaky and you knew, even before the words left his mouth, that his response was causing him great pain.
"Not enough"

Encanto and Schooling
Since nearly all the kids started helping around town after their fifth birthday, Mirabel actually has the most complete education, much to the rest of her sisters’ and cousins’ envy.
Camilo went inconsistently until he was around ten or so because he started babysitting. This was mostly because Felix thought that Camilo should be at least ten before he babysat anyone.
Luisa phased out of school slowly as she came in late or periodically because she was helping people along the way, but she stopped going by the time she was ten (at which point, Julieta and Agustin sort of gave up). Like her mom, she’s really good at math
Dolores dropped out immediately after getting her gift because it was too loud for her, but she continued to listen in on lessons sometimes.
Isabela happily dropped out by the time she was ten because school was not her strong suit. However, she does grow to envy Mirabel’s ability to go to school and get success in it.
For the triplets, I think Julieta likes reading, but she’s a slow reader because she dropped out of school to help her mom and cook remedies for the Encanto. Agustin read to her while she cooked, and this made Bruno and Pepa, who were somewhat skeptical of his intentions because he constantly needed healing, warm up to him a lot. She is however a whiz at arithmetic—she can add large numbers mentally very quickly and calculate percentages, fractions, and proportions without much thought.
Pepa probably dropped out because I don’t know about their ability to create paper and books that wouldn’t be ruined by rain, but she probably got mad at some point and struck another student with lightning. She adores romance novels though, especially trashy and sappy ones, so when there’s a drought she’ll take a book out into the fields and start reading.
Bruno probably went to school the longest of the triplets. He probably brought back some extra material to help his sisters continue to learn after they stopped going to school. He probably dropped out at around 12 or so when the rumors got pretty bad
Alma didn’t go to school and is barely literate.
Pedro was literate and also freakishly good at math.
