i’m rlly glad with the way luisa was portrayed in encanto. bcus she is strong, she is built muscly and broad and tall. BUT she also wears dresses and doesn’t have a ‘boyish’ hairstyle. she isn’t masculine. she’s feminine.
yk a lot of women in fiction who are portrayed as strong are always immediately made to be masculine as well. and obviously this solidifies the “men are strong” stereotype. women in fiction who are muscly, or who are fighters or who are strong are almost ALWAYS portrayed as masculine but luisa isn’t.
women can be strong and feminine. women can be muscly and wear dresses. and that strength that’s “all so masculine and man like (/sarc)” doesn’t take anything away from their womanhood/femininity.

I think Antonio's reaction to his ceremony is the most telling sign that Alma was hurting the family. This little boy is scared, and on a night that should be the most exciting of his life. I mean, he was going to get a superpower. What kid wouldn't be bouncing off the walls with elation and impatience? He should've been running to that door, but instead he turned away and reached out for his cousin.
Tumblr media
When we first meet him, he's hiding under a bed. He doesn't want to be seen or celebrated, because the expectations that have been placed on him are so heavy he doesn't want to face them. He's grown up seeing how the family treats Mirabel, as well as how she treats herself. He was unintentionally taught that in order to be special and loved, he needs a superpower. He wasn't taught that being normal is okay, he was taught that it's a disappointment. He was taught that he can only contribute to the family via magic or he's useless. Perhaps even worse than useless, a burden.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Alma began to value the gifts given by the miracle over her family, and I think that's why Mirabel's door disappeared. It was the candle's way of saying, "Look at your granddaughter. Look at who she is, not what power she might obtain." Gifted children are often mistreated, even if it doesn't seem like it. Luisa, for example, was praised for being strong, and because of her strength she was expected to shoulder every problem by herself. Isabela's gift seemingly bloomed perfection, and so she was expected to be perfect, even though there's no such thing. Alma's abuse effected everyone.
Tumblr media
So then, why did the magic work for Antonio but not Mirabel? Well, I think there's two reasons. First, we have to look at the source. The magic manifested itself when Pedro sacrificed himself for his family, meaning the magic is reliant on a strong family dynamic. By the time Mirabel was born, Alma had turned the miracle into an almost cult-like practice, dressing the children in white robes and inviting the town to observe. It wasn't about family anymore, it was about the spectacle, so Mirabel's door faded away. That's not fair to Mirabel, but not all children are gifted. That doesn't mean their family should love them less.
Tumblr media
In Antonio's case, however, Mirabel cared more about him than upsetting her grandmother. She wasn't supposed to walk with him, but she did because he needed her. He needed his family, not some fancy ceremony or magic power. In that moment, only Mirabel could help him, and she unknowingly rejuvenated the magic because she wanted to be there for her cousin. In the end, Mirabel's worth didn't depend on some magic gift, it depended on her love for her family.

More head-canons/analysis thingys
Luisa and Mirabel have a really great and sweet relationship. Luisa seems genuinely very kindhearted and like she takes her role as big sister seriously. She also doesn't treat her differently for having no powers.
When she gets in the way of Luisa, she responds with “careful sis”, unlike Isabela who responds with an angry “what is your problem!?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And unlike Isabela who is jealous and thinks Mirabel has it easy, Luisa is never seen showing that kind of attitude despite being probably one of the most overworked Madrigal, to the point of being compared to a mule (beast of burden).
The one time we see her yell at Mirabel, she apologizes immediately saying “uh, wow... sorry, that snuck out there”, showing that she almost never gets angry at Mirabel, if ever.
In Surface Pressure she tells Mirabel to give her burdens to her and Mirabel smiles for a split second (while Luisa worries about things that will hurt Mirabel). They also don’t have the kind of animosity that Maribel had with Isabela at the start.

And finally, I mean... look at this 🥺
Mirabel looks so uncertain, I’m wondering if they forgot her again but Luisa noticed and dragged her into the photo.

I hope if a series comes out we will get to explore this dynamic more.

So I saw this Encanto headcannon on Tiktok that just made so much sense to me so now I will share with all of you.
MIGHT I JUST PUT EMPHASIS ON THE FACT THAT THIS IS NOT MY IDEA! I SAW THIS ON TIKTOK! until the part where I add onto the idea, which I clarify towards the bottom:
BASICALLY, everyone has been so pressed about Mirabel not getting a room or a gift at the end, me included, but basically, Casita always knew she cared about the family the most, so she will get a delayed gift, AKA candle bearer. Like Abuela.
So, as Abuela is getting weaker, the candle and the magic gets weaker. Once Mirabel brought everyone back together, the candle burned brighter than ever.
This is my personal spin though:
So when Abuela eventually dies, Mirabel will take her place as head of family and will watch over the candle, and will eventually be given Abuela’s room by La Casa. The picture on the door will change too, into Mirabel. I anticipate it would have butterflies or something like that considering how Bruno’s vision showed the butterfly that would signify where Abuela and Mirabel would make up.
But yeah, that just makes so much sense to me, and justifies why Mirabel got nothing for her efforts for the family
