Malleus

He might not be a stargazer, but he's always liked the night sky — the way the stars glittered against the pitch black was calming. He also happened to roam around abandoned castles at night so he was just used to the night sky.

Either way, he loves listening to you and all of the stories you have about the constellations. Whether the stories are fairly simple like Orion's belt or something from more forgotten constellations like Argo Navis, he just likes seeing you so passionate about your hobby

I think he would have fun pointing and finding constellations as you two lie on the grassy fields near Ramshackle or on one of the towers of the school

Llia

Similar to Malleus, he loves listening to you. I think he would have more stories though about constellations. Who knows, you guys might make it a little challenge to find constellations together late into the night

He's also low-key a night owl, and he likes having company so he really likes you just spending time with him. He also will pop by when you are in Ramshackle about to get ready for bed. Like he'll just come by "hey wanna go find some stars :D"

I feel like he would look at stars with a sort of nostalgic, perhaps longing feeling. He's been around for a while, and I feel like he would reminisce some parts of his past while looking at the night sky. You might hear him drop some cool lore about him haha

Silver

He sleeps a lot, but I feel like he would stay up super late if it means staying up with you. He might've heard about your interest in the constellations and in stars in general and might've gotten into the stars himself. He likes to learn about your hobbies and accidentally get into them himself haha

He also likes using the opportunity to spend quiet time with you by stargazing. You two have definitely fallen asleep in one of the school's towers while looking at the stars. It's kind of nice since you guys can also watch the sunrise from above

Overall, he wants to learn about you through your hobbies and spend time with you. He likes watching you as you passionately describe the stories related to the constellations, a warm smile on his face as he does

Sebek

I feel like he would be super into constellation stories because he likes books. However, you don't know about this until you start talking about one of the constellations and suddenly he's like "Oh yeah! I know that one!"

He's uptight, but he loosens up when he's with you. He's sort of wholesome when he seems to geek out over tales from years ago. I think he would also love just listening to you in general, like he gets all sparkly eyes when you do haha

Similar to Malleus he just likes listening to you even if it means listening to you until the sun rises. He also talks a lot, so you two both share mythology and folktales for like hours without getting bored

Well here I have another drabble in mind focusing a little on how Ih got there:

You couldn't complain about how you lived but on days when Orion and D 16 weren't around and you'd stare out the window you'd think about how you got there.

You were a scientist helping in maintenance, you had always been fascinated by space travel. You had put a lot of effort, days and nights studying for see more... Earth was not in its best situation due to pollution and destruction of land. They were desperate to find a solution before it became unsustainable.

To see what was beyond was your dream, to see the innovations but of course no one had ever gone further than a trip to Saturn and finding a compatible world was also complicated. There were ways to survive thanks to the new spacesuits that were like a second skin, batteries that would take years to break down. You specialized in those designs and configurations.

Until one day you approached one of the ships they were working with, they said it was able to go farther than expected...

Your curiosity got the better of you and you entered the ship, you were surprised by the lack of security. You didn't dare to touch anything out of the ordinary until you saw that the surroundings were closing and an alarm sounded and then everything went black.

By then you were already on their planet. You were still looking for explanations as to what happened when you fainted, were they looking for you? You asked yourself a lot of questions: was it a mistake, was it planned?

But you had to access the ship's computer which was fried but maybe you could reroute the power. Your thoughts were interrupted for a sound.

You heard the door to see D16 had arrived first, he didn't seem to be very happy. You moved from the table. You jumped and move your arms and hands , you caught his attention. His optics focused on you as he placed the servo on the table. You knew what it meant, so you went upstairs as you snuggled into his chest.

When he had days like this he liked to have you near his spark he wouldn't admit it but he liked to have you close as your hands gently touched him.

Your mind while I was between you had to know what happened and if someone was looking for you. But...

Did you want to get out of here? Leave them? Thinking about it only hurt your heart but you wished you could talk to them, know what they were doing outside.

You felt divided... They had kept you safe but you had to know what happened.

Your thoughts were interrupted as he nuzzled you. making you purr a little, embarrassing you on the other hand D16 I thought that sound you made was adorable.

You relaxed and let those thoughts drift away. Only one remained that they might not like your action.

You need to get back to your ship.

Call for asks: I’ve noticed you’ve avoided saying anything about Jegulus for the last few asks so…. Jegulus 😈

anon please, i’m not avoiding saying anything about jegulus, i genuinely don’t know her.

but, fine, let’s imagine i do.

i don’t enjoy it as a pairing, not because i think it’s unfeasible [in my view, the joy of fanfiction is taking a completely implausible premise and making it work], but because i don’t like the way that the fandom which has built up around jegulus expects certain tropes and characterisations which turn the characters into just profoundly uninteresting people.

and this is the case for all the marauders and marauders-adjacent characters [i’m looking at you, fanon barty crouch jr.!], undoubtedly because the era has so little actual canon material that fanon becomes canon and authors run from there. and that’s great - anyone writing stories in a world hostile to hobbies and creativity is a triumph - but the standard way of writing jegulus which has coalesced around this fanon doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest.

there are many jegulus tropes i don’t love: how it always becomes a parallel wolfstar [james and peter would be the cultured choice if we have to do that]; how it’s just drarry but in the seventies [when the cultured choice for that is lucius malfoy/arthur weasley]; how james becomes a tediously good person when the evidence of canon is that he’s a bit of a dick; how it relies on an exaggerated portrayal of orion and walburga’s abusive parenting which misses the fact that regulus evidently colluded with them against sirius; how it assumes the marauders aren’t intensely codependent [sirius mentions-lily-once black is definitely going to let his brother hang around with them, sure]; how snape is sometimes there and always a knob. james and regulus are also so similar in terms of background, social position at school etc. that there’s no juicy spark [as in snack, for example]. and, of course, prongsfoot is canon.

and so on…

but the biggest reason i can’t get into it?

regulus is a death eater, and not by mistake.

now, we all love a fluffy no-voldemort au, but unless that is a jegulus author’s stated setting, they are going to have to deal with the fact that regulus fucking loves the dark lord. this is a teenage boy who has press clippings about voldemort’s terrorism taped above his bed. he knows exactly what he’s getting into and he likes it.

indeed, my reading of deathly hallows is that regulus’ decision to go and get the locket has absolutely nothing to do with a damascene conversion that conducting a campaign of sectarian violence against muggles and muggleborns is bad, but that learning of the existence of the horcrux - and also voldemort’s lack of respect towards his property, kreacher [after all, we see an attitude expressed canonically by wizards that other people have no right to interfere in how you treat your slaves] - makes clear to him that the dark lord’s aims are not oligarchy, with those from pureblood families ruling in happy condescension over a ministry which is fundamentally unchanged, but ruling in majesty as an immortal absolute monarch. his death is a repudiation of his beliefs, yes, but it is a repudiation of the fact that he believed voldemort was his champion, rather than that he believed voldemort was wrong.

and, actually, i don’t think this in and of itself makes jegulus insurmountable. james is a pureblood, and while there is absolutely no evidence in his few canon appearances that he harboured blood-supremacist views, the very fact of his background would allow a complacency which might let him overlook some of regulus’ opinions [think, for example, about ron’s attitude towards house elves]. equally, we have no evidence that regulus couldn’t completely disavow his former beliefs.

but, it requires the fact that regulus isn’t just a tiny baby who aspires to join a terror group by mistake to actually be dealt with, and i have never seen a single piece of jegulus which does so.

Gavin always panics when this happens, cuz he'll be in another room and all of a sudden feel a wave of agony go through Freelancer, paired with an anguished "AUGH MY SHOULDER BLADES" (this is based on personal experience btw)

Getting the pose right was a nightmare!

I drew Tendi and T’lyn on different layers with different colors because otherwise it’d be too confusing. The mess going on in their legs and hands especially. It was a challenge to find a relatively natural looking pose that allowed their hands to match up without hiding anything important. I found i could draw a four-segment stick-figure limb connecting their shoulders, and that helped me get their arms right. The legs were also a mess to figure out, but mostly just because they’re a confusing mess of limbs--they don’t have to intertwine nice.

Also, T’lyn is going to make me learn to draw hands right I swear to god. I could not half-ass the hands on this one.

narrative snipets break:

at that second panel, when Tendi realizes what's happened and gets embarassed, she immediately like, tries to let go and raise her hands respectfully......... but t'lyn just... doesn't let go. for a moment.

Mariner: it couldn't have been that bad, tendi Tendi, still flustered: not that bad?? Not that bad?!? would it be fine if you tripped and Bradward’s D--?! Mariner: eekaaay! you've made your point!!

Earlier version when I thought I was finished:

It’s good to go the extra mile on your art. I think this plainer version would still have been fine, but since I went so far as to actually draw the background for a change, adding the dropped/thrown clutter (PADDs and Tricorder) helped a lot.

T’lyn and Tendi’s mess of legs was hard to differentiate (though adding the shading helps). I made Tendi’s pants slightly darker, though with the shading you can barely tell. I also gave them different boot colors. The original idea was that pure science officers have black and blue boots and medical officers have white and blue boots. We can see that in a few places in season 1. But it seems like they eventually abandoned that concept and just give all science officers white and blue boots. T’lyn is not a medical officer, so obviously she gets black boots. Technically since Tendi is in Senior Science Officer training instead of Medical, she should have black boots, but I gave her white boots so you could tell them apart more easily.

I wasn’t even going to add the facial expressions. I drew this to figure out which one I wanted to use:

Then I put it in the drawing.

But I just kept looking at the sketch and thinking “both are good. Both are good!”

So I made it two panels. Because of how the layers were set up this was easier said than done. But I managed it just fine in the end. I really like how she’s backlit by the ceiling lights in the inset panels. Some kind of like, contrast between the angelic goddess looking down at you and the reality that she’s an emotional mess who wears her emotions on her sleeve.

It was also really important to add the inset panels because I don’t want to give the impression that either Tendi is doing this on purpose nor any orion fem dom stereotypes. It’s way funnier and cuter if she just keeps accidentally finding herself in these scenarios, worried that T’lyn’s resentment for her is growing because SHE KEEPS AVOIDING ME OUTSIDE OF STUDY SESSIONS! AND WHEN WE MAKE EYE CONTACT SHE LOOKS AWAY! I FUCKED UP! but actually T’lyn is just struggling to control her mad nasty thoughts about just what she’d like to do to Tendi (she’d like to hold her hands some more)

Adding the inset panels lets me make sure Tendi’s character is adequately captured so she’s not just A Thing Happening To T’lyn.

The dropped PADDs and Tricorder make the scene seem more diagetic, and just more real/plausible. They’re busy looking at their PADDs and not looking where they’re going, see? The one that’s face down is T’lyn’s, the two face up are Tendi’s. The PADD screens are cropped screenshots from the show that have been edited and then skewed/rotated/rescaled into place

The first PADD is Tendi doing research on Vulcan touch telepathy (after being told by someone else what the significance of handholding is to Vulcans), the second one is actually breaking the fourth wall and addressing the viewer directly.

one of the last touches I added was to erase the line-art around her pupils, so the pupils would look smaller (aids to the feeling of shock) and add a nostril (Dunno why--I never draw nostrils on Lower Decks characters, but it just seemed correct in this case) and a little wrinkle on her eye. All this was added because, when I drew Tendi’s face, it felt more detailed than T’lyn’s for some reason (freckles I think?) and I felt I had to make them match.

T’lyn’s face here was fun and took a while to get right. She (and all Vulcans in Lower Decks) are usually half-lidded, but we see T’lyn’s kinda shock when Tendi grabs her hand in the One Canon T’lyndi Scene We Have At Least Until Next Year--even then she looks attentive, not necessarily shocked.

I just think it’s kind of cool that they both have non-red blood and colorful blush.

For classic music: Passacaglia by Handel/Halvorsen; Nocturne by Chopin; Moonlight by Beethoven; Lacrimosa by Mozart; Dining with Lectre by Peter Gundry; Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D minor. Also Bach's Prelude for Lute in C minor. Basically anything Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Claude Debussy, Hadyn, Wagner, Chopin, Giazotto, Schumann, and Lizst.

For modern music : Anything by Hozier, The Gang of Youths, songs like The Cult of Dionysus by The Orion Express, and Brutus by The Buttress. Some of Lorde, Ethel Cain, some Lana del Rey, also Sufjan Stevens for his really sad tracks.

New Gods November 2023 - Week 4, Day 4: Alternate Realities!

once upon a time it was said that only one version of the New Gods exist across all Earths, but its rarely reflected after that. Most of these AUs are canon, some after 1/2 canon (featuring only one of the duo), and some are my own ideas :D This december is going on three years since I got into New Gods!

Box six: Hunter and Neon Black, two men closely resembling Orion and Lightray, but with thicker armour and darker clothes. Hunter is turned away but looking over his shoulder, while Neon Black is pressed into his chest and smiling.

Box seven: Orion and Lightray based on the style of Mike Mignola, Lightray is thin and wearing a white top with a gold V mark, and long gold gloves that reach up his arms. Orion has a low cut red shirt and blue shoulderpads. He and Lightray are smiling at eachother.

Box eight: Future State Orion with a matching Lightray, their heads are pressed together and they're holding eachother's faces and smiling. Orion has pink skin and flaming hair, Lightray is similar, both have gold headpieces resembling their usual counterparts.

Box nine: The top of two mock-Simpsons style figures, one with a red/black bowlcut and one with orange hair and a silver headpiece with a "v" on it, meant to be Obrian and Flightrisk from Radioactive Man.

Box ten: Lightray faced away from the viewer, glaring at Orion, who is lacking a helmet and has long, wild hair. Orion has a darker outfit based on his Gods and Monsters uniform, with a silver harness. Barda is next to him in an outfit similar to her regular one, she looks concerned and is reaching to pull Orion back. Behind them are buildings from New Genesis.

Box eleven: Orion's death scene from Gods and Monsters, Lightray is holding Orion back while Highfather's staff kills him.

1: Orihound and Lightstray from the New Dogs (Earth C-Minus). Inspired by the art in their first/only appearance Captain Carrot and the Final Ark #3, by Scott Shaw, Scott Koblish, Tom Luth, and Drew Moore.

2: Thorion and Bald’r the Lightbringer of the New Asgods (Amalgam Earth). Inspired by the art .

3: Lightray and Orion as members of the Lantern corps, designed by me. In this universe, an Apokolips-raised Orion loses all sense of control when given the red ring and decimates the population of Apokolips, then turns on Atrocitus for manipulating his mind. Seeing a threat to all Lantern Corps, Lightray of New Genesis volunteers to defeat Orion and retrieve his ring. Lightray’s design is based on his formal wear from volume 3, Orion’s is based on his rebirth uniform. OK i dont know if they can work out in this one honestly i just thought it’d be cool, theoretically

4. Lightraydactyl and Orionodon, designed by me. The JL fighting Darkseid instead of Orion is a pet peeve of mine, but Jurassic League didnt even leave room for the New Gods to exist. i love the dinosaurs comic though Lightray was pretty straightforward, Orion’s design took inspiration from Darklyoseid’s canon design by Juan Gedeon, a sabertooth tiger (for Tigra), and Orion’s main universe costume for the colours.

5. Orion and Lightray Mechs. DC Mech killed Orion off in issue one boooooo! but it did mean i didnt have to design my own for his (Lightray's is mine though). This was inspired by one of the covers for Pacific Rim, because I will be thinking about a pacrim AU for them forever now.

6. Hunter and Neon Black. These guys aren’t actually LR and Orion, just two random inmates disguised as evil versions of them iirc, but I liked Neon Black’s design.

7. Orion and Lightray, Mike Mignola’s scrapped 1990′s New Gods animated film designs.

8: Orion and Lightray from Future State: Green Lantern, Lightray was designed by me.

9: O’Brian and Flightrisk of the New Guards from Radioactive Man.

10. Orion and Lightray (and Barda) from a personal AU of mine, using designs inspired by the Gods and Monsters film.

a few months ago i got to finish with this very long term project :D thank you to everyone who encouraged me with kind words while working on this :D The final Lightrion week pic is finished and ready to post whenever i get around to it.
