Queer Madrigals

I'm about to post a couple future!fic for Encanto, so I figured I'd take a minute to talk about my headcanons when it comes to their genders/sexualities.

The Obvious: I've posted somewhat in depth about what I think Bruno and Isabela's individual deals are, so I'm not going to really talk about it here, but yeah. Using the labels I am familiar with, I assume Bruno is demi, bi, and nonbinary, and that Isabela is a lesbian who ends up marrying a trans woman.

The Married: I mean, we can sit here all day and speculate, but the only real headcanons I got are that Juli is demi and Pepa has made out with more women than Bruno.

Mirabel: I've mentioned this, but I didn't really talk about it. Due to heteronormativity I suspect it wouldn't occur to Mirabel to question her sexuality until later in life when the Pride movement starts up. I think she's bi, possibly also demi, but most definitely not very focused on her love life (another reason why she doesn't think too hard about her sexuality). She's got shit to do and if somebody wants to date her they better speak up about it because she's got too many projects going on right now to bother with mind games. Mirabel ends up with a man mostly by coincidence, I saw somebody do the numbers and its just statistically more likely that a bi person will end up with somebody of the opposite sex (the math didn't factor for gender). I try to keep all of my headcanons grounded to peoples lived experiences, and this felt historically accurate.

Luisa: I think that if Luisa were a tumblrina she would end up being CIS+, but would have to go through the journey of exploring her gender due to societal biases. In the context of 1950's Colombia, she spends her youth hearing abuelas and tias talking about how she needs to be more feminine if she wants a husband, and struggles with that for a while. Luisa sings "I glow because I know what my worth is" and that's the sort of thing somebody says when they're on the other side of some serious self doubt, so I do think she had to deal with a bit of misogyny and body image issues. The thing is, Luisa likes the way she looks, and she's proud of what a hard worker she is, but she also wears ribbons in her hair and skirts instead of pants to work in. Furthermore, I suspect every bi person in the village, male or female, has a huge fucking crush on her because if she was a modern tumblrina people would be responding to pictures of her with that "not to be a lesbian but oh my god" stuff. I headcanon her as being technically cishet, but culturally gay due to people being people about the whole Woman with Biceps thing, if that makes sense. Once she starts allowing herself some free time, she dates every bi man in the village.

Dolores: Morosexual. No offense Mariano.

Camilo: You know how gender is a product of your culture and different societies throughout history have had different ideas of how many genders there are and what it means to be a man or woman? I think being able to turn into a woman at will would have an effect on Camilo's relationship with his gender. Like, I don't know if he would be full nonbinary, because I have never met a shapeshifter and asked them how they feel about gender, but I can't imagine he sees gender as a rigid binary. Like I said, I try to stay grounded in my headcanons, and I have zero idea what the lived experience of a shapeshifter is, soooooo...?

Antonio: I have spent a long time weighing the options here, his association with animals makes me think he would be the least traditional Madrigal, so I would like to think he'd end up in the least conventional relationship. I posted a list of headcanons where I floated the idea of him being poly, but I like the idea of him being aroace better. I stand by the rest of it, though. He marries a lesbian, let's her girlfriend move in with them, and he's just kinda there. Like, the women consider themselves married to each other and he's just some guy who talks to birds. They're his best friends and thinks he's pretty great but the only time he has sex is when him and the wives want kids, and other than that he's just vibing. I arrived at this headcanon because I love the idea of him being sorta a reverse Bruno. Like, people think he has two wives so everybody assumes he's this total lady killer, they sing songs about how charming he is, rumors abound that he can make a girl swoon with a single smile, then you talk to him and he's just some guy. Occasionally, a woman will throw herself at him and he's like "No thanks" then starts having a conversation with her cat. Do you see my vision? Anyone? I don't care if nobody else thinks it's funny, because I'm giggling at my computer.

It’s so goddam pitiful you can’t help but want to hold him

I mean you were gonna do it anyways but his sad puppy eyes and droopy head just make it more compelling

He’ll keep up an act for the crowds and the kids, smiling and playing

But as soon as he waves goodbye the grin fades and his shoulders slump and he crosses his arms across his chest

Yes Ik it’s very angsty teen

But it’s also very Camilo

He’s not gonna try to hide his feelings if he doesn’t feel like he needs to bc it seems stupid

Why would someone bottle up their feelings?

Why hide them?

That just creates more problems

And not the fun kind

So when you approach him and ask if everything’s alright he doesn’t try for a smile and nod his head

Camilo looks right at you and shakes his head with the saddest look it makes your heart ache

So you offer him your hand and lead him somewhere secluded

You sit down on a bench or the ground and either A) gently pull him onto your lap or B) let him sit next to you

It depends on the temperature and your moods

It doesn’t matter which position tho he’s still gonna curl up there and flop his head onto your shoulder which prolly hurts you both a lil but you don’t really mind as he nuzzles into you and breathes deep

You wrap your arm(s) around him, rest your chin on the top of his head, and trace the tips of your fingers up and down his arm(s)

Or you might do that to his back

Or you might rub his back

Or a combination of the above

But anyways

As Camilo heaves a sigh you quietly ask if he wants to talk about it

Welp I was gonna say that toward the beginning of your relationship he wouldn’t but I honestly don’t think it would matter

If he doesn’t need to get it out or if he doesn’t have the energy to talk about it then he shakes his head

So you’ll just chill there with him, comforting him wordlessly, pressing tender, loving kisses anywhere and everywhere

Neck, forehead, temple, hair, hands, arms, shoulders, everywhere

If he’s on your lap with his chest to yours you’ll slowly comb your hands thru his hair and twirl the ends around your fingers

Ayyyy mierda [shit]

Camilo loves every bit of it

He’s so goddam grateful for you and your endless affection

He loves that you aren’t pressing him for answers and instead just provide this silent but strong wall of comfort that he can lean on

Then again

Camilo will definitely talk to you

He trusts and loves you with all that he is and will have no issues with opening up

I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times in all the other hcs and imagines and fanfics but a main cause of Camilo’s upset-ness is that ppl in town are always asking for him to be other ppl

No one asks for just Camilo

So he’s often left feeling unwanted and used

So you’re there to remind him that you and the other Madrigals love Camilo for Camilo

He’s more than his gift

Then another huge source of mopey behavior is an identity crisis

With his gift it’s easy for all the appearances and genders and changing to go to his head

Camilo is also, without a doubt, a he/they

I don’t know a single he/they or she/they (including myself) that has not had multiple gender identity crisis’

And even after they come out and have it “figured out” there are still lots of times when they question it

So when Camilo has his he’s very confused and feeling vulnerable and probably second guessing everything every time someone calls him “he” or “they”

There’s honestly not much you can do for this

No solid advice you can give

No definite or clear solution

But you can offer support

You can promise that you’ll be there no matter what

It doesn’t matter if Camilo is a guy, gal or nonbinary pal

You’ll always love him/them for him/them

And Camilo is infinitely grateful for it

You have no idea

Camilo’s heart swells- no- bursts with love and gratitude and adoration

He holds you a little closer

Squeezes you a little tighter

Falls whole stories deeper in love with you (if that was even possible)

Gender in Encanto: a brief non-comprehensive essay

Just cut a line from "light and Shadow" about how gifts are like getting another set of sometimes conflicting gender roles on an unsuspecting 5 year old and Mirabel should consider herself lucky.

Too on the nose but like....

it's true.

Look at Isabela being forced into a gender expression she clearly doesn't want. She wants to be a woman sure but not the woman her grandmother Alma forces her to be.

Look at Pepa having to do constant emotional labor+ or she would cause natural disasters and her husband who has to keep her calm and happy at all times or else

Bruno's gift would fuck up anyone but someone as sweet and shy as him especially and you know Alma pushed him to be bear it silently because he's a Madrigal and a man and men have to push down their negative feelings.

And while Luisa and Camilo are arguably breaking gender roles they are do so in very limited conditional ways and both wear traditional clothes. For example, Camilo can only wear feminine clothes while shapeshifting into women which is some interesting cissexism there. (I'm pretty sure if I was amab my family would the same tho "you can wear a dress but only if it's for a role, god forbid you wear one to school")

however there is an interesting tradition of men following their wives which is apparently normal in colombia and even taking their wives names which I can assure you is NOT normal in Colombia. For example before marrying Julieta Madrigal, Agustin's surname was Rojas. All their daughters are called Rojas-Madrigal. This is highly unusual as the woman's surname comes first and the man's second and is the legal one. Here it's the men marrying into the family.

My partner says because the miracle is transferred by name and not blood. Jared Bush implies this when he says children adopted before age 5 can get gifts. Perhaps Alma worries if her daughters' husbands didn't take the name her grandchildren wouldn't get gifts (oh the horror).

This essay was brought you to by the me reading the Encanto art book at 2 am yesterday and pondering the blurbs on what how the costume designer gave each woman a distinct type of femininity and she's right.... she did.

Most of this is me thinking of my own fanfic, the lore of this is in my AO3 fanfic "to light a candle is to cast a shadow" by Gerrysherry

In Light and darkness AU, that IS how it works with names. When Pedro's sister Beatriz marries and takes on the surname Diaz she stops being a Madrigal. Although the miracle (who is a character in his/its own right) and the family consider her daughter Suzanna family she isn't according to the magic system. Alejandra maintains the Madrigal line by having her husband marry into the family name as well, so Alma didn't start the tradition she revived it.

Also in Light and Shadow half the cast is trans.

Obviously Camilo is, but they're so codedly nonbinary that's a no-brainer. But so is their shadow who was raised as a girl while they were raised a boy. Both and I and Maia Kobabe had a fantasy somewhere out there was a twin raised as the opposite gender we were assigned at birth and together we could be whole and understood. E phrases it much more beautifully than I ever could. Read eir comic Genderqueer for the quote.

Agustin's older sister Stella is trans and she's Camilo mentor (since they're closest in magic system with Bruno out of the picture but yes both are trans). When Camilo's shadow outs them as trans, she is the first to offer reassurance and support. Stella is instrumental in helping most of the characters cis or trans. She lets her brother stay at her house when he needs the quiet after escaping the darkness Of course she lets her family crash at her house when their house falls.

Camilo's shadow is raised a girl and it's unclear if they identified as a girl at first or if that's Shadow Beatriz's (Alma's counterpart) abusive parenting as she seems to hate boys and men (except her own son but he's not human soo....).

There is the mysterious librarian who no one even knows what their agab was as their parents are long dead and their surviving uncle keeps their secret (as all good uncles in this story). They are the first openly nonbinary person in the valley (in this century at least) but not the last (see also Camilo Madrigal).

Then there's Basilio, Mariano's cousin who is also in love with Isabela and a deeply closeted trans woman who has some deep seated worries that her wanting to BE like her crush is wrong and pathological, as my real trans women do. Like Dolores she has resigned herself to let her cousin marry the her crush. Obviously it will work out.

The sad thing is Stella Rojas is RIGHT THERE and Basilio doesn't even know that's an option for her until Camilo and Mirabel introduce the two.

Encanto headcanons that I will take no criticism on

Luisa is romantically a lesbian and asexual. I also think she uses she/they pronouns.

Isa is nonbinary (they/she) and also aroace. The aroace hc stems from her obvious discomfort at every mention of her marriage. I don’t think it’s because she’s not attracted to Mariano, I think she’s not attracted to anyone.

Bruno is gay. He uses they/he pronouns and likes himself a strong burly muscular tough guy. He’s also autistic and hates loud noises.

Mirabel secretly loved Isa’s perfect flowers but as siblings do, pretended to hate it. Straight and cis (she/her) but a huge ally.

Abuela isn’t homophobic as most people say, i think she just doesn’t understand and doesn’t want to admit it. Unknowingly bisexual and cis (she/her).

Dolores has issues with certain hairstyles and hates hair touching her ears because she can hear it moving and doesn’t like the sound. Trans female (she/her) and straight.

Antonio knew Bruno was in the walls the second he got his gift because “the rats told him everything”. I don’t think kids should be gendered as much as they are so any pronouns and until he’s canonically older than 5 (probably around 12), he’s aroace.

Pepa uses any pronouns and she’s straight. I like the idea that she has BARELY noticeable vitiligo (barely noticeable due to the fact she’s got lighter skin).

Camilo is what I like to call, a transmasc icon. He/They pronouns, romantically attracted to men and asexual. I think dysphoria could be added to the fandomwide agreement that he suffers with self image issues.

(Book One)

Xavier Campbell

26, he/him, trans, gay, Scottish-Irish; dishwasher at Cocina Ramos by day, enthusiastic corporate terrorist by night; works with Henry Townsend, his 39 yo neighbor reeling from the accidental death of his son by a corporation-caused water pollution outbreak, and together the two of them target various corporations in the twin cities, stealing their money and destroying their corporate offices, aided by Henry’s low-level position in a high-end custodial services company, which grants them access to these businesses after dark; without knowing it, they target businesses secretly owned by Irish Clanns. (Also Henry really wants to fuck him, but won’t admit it.)

Camilo Ramos

26, he/him, cis, bi, Mexican; recent medical school graduate by day, unwilling unlicensed surgeon for the O’Shea Clann by night; aunt runs Cocina Ramos (pretty much the only legitimate business in this story); his family is being extorted by the O’Sheas and is also hiding from the Alcázars, a paramilitary group based in southern Mexico, which his grandfather Rafael accidentally married into decades ago. He drunkenly knocks Xavier to the floor while he is carrying dishes, resulting in him pulling glass out of Xavier’s hands in the employee bathroom of his aunt’s restaurant, in perhaps the most awkward meet-cute to ever happen. Also his mother has been missing for years.

Amelia Ngô

33, she/her, trans, ace, Vietnamese; recent inheritor of Zenith Investments (a mostly legitimate company) after her estranged mother’s (natural) passing by day; new liaison with the Kinney Clann, whose money Zenith Investment moves around (among other things, like buying judges and officials, all of which her mother had been doing for years); she abandons her hopes of a political career, stalled from years of battling entrenched bigotry in the government, and leans completely into the underground, now finally able to accomplish the things she’s always wanted now that she knows how the game is really played: by bribes and extortion.

Saoirse Kinney

20, she/her, cis, gray, Irish; by day: owner and operator of an Irish goods import company; by night: formerly the Kinney family’s “fixer”, currently the Kinney family’s new leader, since her father was apprehended by the Feds; the Kinney Clann is a part of what the Feds call The Syndicate, a decentralized group of Irish criminal families: the Kinneys, the Teagan’s, and the Rooney’s, as well as formerly, the O’Sheas, whom they are now at war with. She’s got a million problems, both outside and inside the Syndicate.

Lorcan O’Shea

16, they/them, nonbinary, pan, Black; HS student by day; spy and sniper for the O’Shea Clann, which they were adopted into after the death of their parents, by night; they are hoping to destroy the Kinneys, Teagans, and Rooneys, whom they have been led to believe were responsible for their parents’ deaths, and they see the current instability in the Kinney Clann as a great opportunity to exploit; unfortunately they are also dealing with development that their friend, Xavier, has recently made themselves the target of both the Syndicate and the O’Sheas.

Farrah Zahir

22, she/her, cis, bi, Somali; social working student by day; extremely experienced unlicensed underground doctor primarily serving immigrants but also criminals by night; her parents ran a similar outfit, providing medical care to any and everyone who came in (including the O’Sheas), which got them killed by the Kinney’s years ago; was adopted by her godfather, Rufus Knox, a diesel engine mechanic and mostly retired leader of the motorcycle gang known as the Barbarians, who was saved from a double-gunshot wound by Farrah’s parents; she and Rufus live together and still have strong influence with the Barbarians.
