svt as the types of people you meet in college? it can be totally up to your interpretation of them hehe and they don't have to fit into certain college stereotypes!!!
OH i love this!!!!!! (based on my own experiences mixed with some cliches/aus/imaginings 🫶🏻) sorry this took a while to get to btw 🥲
seungcheol: the senior who manned one of the booths at your freshman orientation. did you join his club bc he was ridiculously attractive and made small talk with you? no comment. you follow each other on instagram but that’s probably about it <//3 definitely a campus crush that feels very unattainable but it doesn’t stop you from imagining what he’d be like as your a boyfriend
jeonghan: you walked past him once, and pretended you heard someone behind you calling your name just so you had an excuse to do a double-take. people this pretty existed?? and at your college/uni?? you told all your friends about him and after some snooping you managed to find his instagram. please just send that follower request, you have nothing to lose <3
joshua: i can totally see him being a student advisor omg!! so so so sweet, actually checks in on you often and is genuinely interested in knowing how things are going for you :’) does his best to give good advice, but as you became closer friends you became more familiar with his sense of humour and his advice got increasingly……interesting 😭 “your prof said what? next time trip him in the hallway!” “joshua nO” don’t do that
jun: sat in front of you in one of your courses last year, fell asleep during the lecture almost every single week. his friends gave up on keeping him awake halfway through the semester. you became friends after being randomly assigned to the same group for project and now you’re the friend who has to keep him awake during classes. he’s so cool though, and very witty and funny <3
soonyoung: even if you don’t know him personally, you always run into him on campus. grabbing a coffee at the cafe, goofing off with his friends in the quad, dozing off in the library…he’s friendly with everyone, even the grumpiest professors. you want to be his friend so bad, he just seems so fun to be around. also the only person you know who wears tiger print but he pulls it off!!
wonwoo: you have a class with him and he always sits in the back. so quiet and shy, barely talks to anyone but he’s really cute so you noticed him regardless. you got paired up for a discussion and found out how smart and well-spoken he was, and you guess he vibed with you too bc since then he started saving you a seat :’)) occasionally plays games on his laptop when the lecture gets boring, and angles the screen more towards you so you can watch <3
jihoon: a friend of a friend. you’ve never met but jun tells you so much about him, so it almost feels like you know him too. you follow him on instagram and occasionally he’ll post covers of him singing while playing the guitar. you offhandedly mentioned to jun that his voice is so pretty and soothing and much to your embarrassment he tells jihoon 😭 but it’s okay bc he’s setting up a hangout to officially introduce you both to each other!!
seokmin: the friend we wish we all had. you met on your very first day of college/uni when you had the same class. he initiated convo with you and was so sweet and friendly even though you could tell he was extremely nervous himself, protect him omg 💔 one of your closest friends to this day even if you don’t have the same majors. you enrol in random electives together and those lectures are always your favourite bc you sit in the back and goof off, just try not to get shushed too much <33
mingyu: spilled coffee on your shoes at the starbucks on campus 🙁 it’s not his fault it was really crowded and someone bumped into him causing him to bump into you!! also, he looked very guilty about it so you couldn’t find it in you to be mad. he pays for your coffee as an apology. he recognises you when you stand behind him in line two weeks later and jokes that he won’t spill anything on you this time. you became friends and now you understand why his close friends (affectionately) bully him so much bc he’s just a puppy trapped in a 6ft man’s body 🤧
minghao: literally the main character. he doesn’t walk, he struts and it works for him. so effortlessly cool and attractive. a huge motivating factor for showing up to that class is getting to see what his outfit for that day is. one time you mustered up the courage to compliment his shirt, and your heart swelled at how his face lit up immediately :’)
seungkwan: if you hear the sound of ice being shaken around in a plastic cup mid-lecture, 9 times out of 10 that’s him. he’s an iced coffee girlie he’s just like me. you became friends after he sincerely complimented you on how well you did in your midterm presentation 🤧 the sweetest most caring person ever, but he shows his affection by (playfully) judging you while sipping his iced americanos <3
vernon: took the seat across from you in the library one day while you were cramming for a test. has the coolest stickers on his headphones. you aren’t sure if he actually got any work done bc he seemed really into the music he was listening to. you accidentally made eye contact and he gave you a dorky little smile <3 you exchanged contacts the second time you happened upon each other at that very same table and he showed you a pic of his cat hehe
chan: this is sooooo self-indulgent bc i’ve had these thoughts for the longest time……he’s such a loser (affectionate) omg………..he sat next to you for a quiz and realised he didn’t have a pen 😭 blushed so hard when you offered to lend him a spare one before profusely thanking you. forgets to return it………..you thought you lost that pen for good but when he walked into class the next week, his eyes desperately searched the room looking for you, and with an sheepish smile he returned your pen along with a candy bar as an apology for forgetting…….he’s so cute i hate him so much🧎🏻‍♀️
a/n: many feelings about college bf!wonwoo and chan…….

update on the hell on me assigment. after getting a manic episode from drinking a single monster can and doing 29 pages in one sitting, i send my work to get printed. 6am, i get email just saying "see ya!" and a photo on how to label files. fuck. whatever, im free of my teammate. i get to uni and thankfully the line was super fast. super mega expensive printing bc of amount and paper types. ok. get to class get everything set up. profs tells us that we cannot dissolve the group and it Has to be a group thing, not even for price but bc the stupid setting of the class is like that (im changing settings/prof next year now 😃). hear classmate mutter she wants to kill herself. last of the class to get a "correction" thats just saying did you see, based on other works, what was wrong? get told my reading rythm was really good but bc classmate got a cooler header font we should go with that even if it has many errors that mine doesnt have. 15 doublepages of mine ignored fully 👍. wait for 2 hours classmate to be free bc she simply does not talk to me unless its to say to ask a prof about it. when i finally ask her how are we going to manage she goes to ask prof about it and even the prof is like you two should talk. i think what she muttered earlier and agree. she does not want me to do anything even if she has mistakes. she's doing dogshit takes on the assignment too and all my original writing of more concrete things is going unused too. ask her what i can do, she basically says nothing. rest of the day was also dogshit. next day as im sitting here seeing she does have anything in control and that i'll have to sit there like an sculpture i realize im free. i hate being free bc im doing this career to enrich myself, but now im Free. as i waited for 2 hours like a fucking plant, i realize her method of doing things and why she gets good grades despite everything. i now realize that she didnt talk to me or offer help in anything she didnt like because she already had planned to do everything herself. why did she accept to work with me? i have no idea. so now in the middle of the physical pain and dealing with the dissapointment of being put as a plant, i realize she has freed me. i now have 3 classes to do nothing, i just present my sole idea that will not disturb her work, and i can concentrate in my other classes. fuck, i will have free time AND 8 hours of sleep assured. i will waste far less money that if i did it alone bc i'm sure she'll also bind the book herself and i'm only there to put half of the extremely high amount of printing costs. after all this pain, i now realize im free

mie….could we please get college au eren headcanons👉🏽👈🏽
Of course. I’m always thinking about his big head anyway <33 might as well put it good use.
One thing he learned in college is how to make his hyperfocus/fixation episodes work for him; that’s why he schedules all his classes as close together as possible. He’d rather have class back to back for 5 hours, than have it spread out with hours in between lectures, because that increases his changes of cutting.
You can always tell when he’s in class and/or what class he’s in by how much he responds to your messages. If he doesn’t text back at all, he’s in a class that hard or one he enjoys, or both. But if he’s sending you iMessage games, then you know he’s in his elective that he couldn’t care else about (and is probably cheating in someway somehow lmfao).
He usually puts his phone on dnd when he’s in a class that’s important, but you’re in his favorite contacts, so your messages always ring through. What if it’s an emergency and you need him for something? Advanced Roots of Human Biology can wait.
Some days there are one or two our breaks between his lectures, that’s just how the scheduling works out. When that happens, he usually sneaks into one of your lectures, or goes to your place to take a nap. Your roommates have become accustomed to him, honestly they’ve been considering giving him a key.
Once, he didn’t realize that your lecture was basically a seminar, with you, the prof and maybe six other students. He still stayed lmao, and the prof was so amazed by his dedication, that she didn’t even mind. Occasionally, you’ll catch the two of them talking after lecture. It’s pretty cute the way she’s adopted him into the class even tho he’s not on the roster.
You... have to show him where the library is lmfao. He genuinely has not stepped foot in one until you bring him to one. He likes it tho lmao once he gets used to it.
Speaking of which, do not give him standard directions to find your classes on campus because all you’ll get is, “Babe, I’m gonna keep it real with you, I’ve never heard of the ‘West Quad’ a day in my life. What building are you near.”
He usually comes to see you in the library after all his lectures are done for the day. Sometimes he does homework, sometimes he’s just fucking around on his computer, sometimes he’s just bothering you. When you have to leave to go to class, he stays behind to watch your stuff so you don’t have to pack everything up and come back.
Very protective when it comes to keeping your seat for you. No, you cannot take that chair to your table you good for nothing freshman; it’s reserved for you.
He’ll drag you out of the library if you’ve been cooped up all day, tho. Eren will use his height and his strength against you to get you up. Placates you with kisses when he sees your angry expression, and promises to buy you food.
He takes your backpack for you when you’re walking together,m. His backpack is frustratingly light all the time, even during midterms. You swear all he’s got in there is a pencil and some flashcards.
If you have night classes, he sticks around to walk you home after, especially in the winter when it gets dark faster. If he’s not already on campus, he’ll walk/drive back to meet you; he just doesn’t like you going home alone. Even if your friend/roommate is in the class with you, Eren will walk or drive the both of you home for his own sanity.
He plays sports, so he usually has practice most evenings, but he’ll find a way to make time. If practice was particularly brutal, he’ll probably crash at your place.
He loves it when you come to meet him after practice. His whole face lights up and he waves obnoxiously, before he gathers up his stuff and all but sprints towards you. You get a cold water bottle to the face, or a bit of water splashed on you usually, which he takes immense amusement in.
He knows it’s not possible for you to make it to all of his games, and usually it doesn’t bother him much; you’ve got your own life, and work to worry about. All he asks is that you wear his jersey, or any item of his sports apparel/merch on game day (he’s partial to hoodies).
By the time junior year rolls around, he’s not all that interested in attending parties that aren’t hosted by your friends; so, unless it’s at Connie, Jean, or Reiner and Bertholdt’s place, Eren will usually decline. Even team parties, he’s not crazy about unless it’s to celebrate a championship or something. He’d much rather celebrate with you.
He does get excited about hosting parties though, and he and Jean become pretty damn good co-hosts. They don’t throw ragers, and that’s probably why Eren likes it so much. It’s usually your friend group and a couple plus ones, some good music, games, weed, and take-out.
He’ll buy you coffee whenever you ask for it. The first time, he just orders something plain, not really knowing the difference between anything; but give it two or three tries, and he’ll get it perfect. He becomes so good that he can order you something new/different and you’ll love it.
That’s kind of the start of his own coffee addiction, and more often than not, when he buys you a cup, he’s on his second or third of the day himself. The flavor has really grown on him, okay.
He much prefers your apartment, but on occasion, he’ll ask you to come to his. You’ve been studying for so long, a change of environment should do you good, he claims. He’s a fucking liar tho because that’s all Eren Talk for “I do genuinely want you to come over, but my plans are to coerce you out of doing your assignments and doing me instead.”
Lmfao he adds you on Apple Watch Rings just so you can see him close his rings every day and laugh at you. Even if yours get closed by virtue of walking around campus or working out or whatever, his numbers are stupidly high because he fucking has practice at least 4 days of the week.
Of course when you’re running on a soccer field for 2 hours every day, you close your Move Ring five times, Eren. Leave the rest of us alone.
He buys you guys matching accessories for your keychains. It’s something pretty cute, and slightly random, but it reminded him of you. It also serves as a reminder to himself to take his fucking keys with him when he leaves his house.
He sleeps like a fucking rock, so do not let him fall asleep in the library. Waking him up is a mission, and he’s never happy to be woken up. He looks kinda cute tho.
He schedules dates for you and his friends. Usually by accident, but hear me out. Sometimes he’ll make plans with Armin, then forget that he has class or a test or something; so his solution is to text you, “hey, i forgot min and i were supposed to go some aquarium tomorrow but i have a midterm so here’s the pdf of my ticket, go with him for me, thanks babe love u” then, boop, you and Armin have an aquarium date Friday evening.
The same thing happens with Mikasa, though, she usually catches the scheduling conflict before Eren does, and invites you out herself. You and Mikasa hang out quite a bit anyway, so it comes to the point where she tells you when she’s gonna hang out with Eren, so you can make yourself free for when he inevitably remember he has a game that day.
Mikasa is most amazed that you’ve put up with Eren this long lmao. You’ve certainly lessened her Eren & Armin babysitting hours, and for that she’s eternally grateful. Also, she’s just happy to have another close friend. She loves Eren and Armin, but they’re not the most social beings, and she was literally their only friend besides the other for all their childhood PLEASE she’s so happy you’re around.
It’s Mikasa, however, who babysits you and Eren whenever you both get too drunk. Says you guys are two peas in a pod (affectionate<2)
If you tell Eren something important that happened, like an internship you got, or a good grade in a class, or something, he usually relays that information to his mom pls. He texts her every day, and if she doesn’t ask for an update on you first, he gives her one.
Carla calls you sometimes, too. At least once every few weeks, just to check on you herself. She really likes you for Eren, and is grateful someone is willing to put up with her hotheaded son.
Eren’s always using your fucking chapstick. Always. You know he has his own, so why he needs to use yours is beyond you. Finds time to make some dumbass comment about how it’s an “indirect kiss” every time he uses it too. Like bro, we’re dating, and have had many direct kisses why are you like this.
He posts on Instagram every few weeks or so, but you’re on his story every few days. Usually, it’s just a video of you minding your business and doing your work while Eren slowly zooms in before making some loud noise to surprise you, all so he can get your reaction on video and laugh at it. He’s annoying.
He’s a bit of a copycat when it comes to the products you use. He’ll buy the same brand of pens as you (for that matter, all of his school supplies mirror yours because what does he know about the difference between A4 and A5 notebooks?), put a little hand sanitizer on his backpack like yours (and a lotion, too, for good measure), he even copies your Starbucks order until he finds one he likes for himself. It’s one of his love languages <3
If you’re wondering where your eyelash curler went, Eren stole it to try it on himself, hurt himself, vowed to never use it again, went back because he wanted to “do it right and not give up,” liked the results when he didn’t pinch his eyelid, and now it’s his.
That being said, stop trying to put your Fenty lipgloss on him, it’s never going to happen. Eye makeup, maybe, only if you sit in his lap and he can have his hands on your ass while you do it.
What he does love is letting you do his skincare. He will set aside dedicated skincare nights, he adores it. Easily one of his favorite things ever.
You have his wallet. Not because he’s your sugar daddy or anything (although, if you want something, he’d definitely let you use his card to get it; and even if you bought something without asking, he wouldn’t think twice about it), but because he put it in your bag once and never took it out.
When you tried to give it back, he just shook his head and told you to keep it, “I have my ID in my phone case anyway, and you’re less likely to lose it. Plus I put all my cards on Apple Pay, so I’m good.”
When you do make it to a game of his, he’s all over you when it’s over. Not in a cocky athlete boyfriend kind of way; in a very sleepy boyfriend kind of way. He’s usually got ice on at least one part of his body, and he’s got half his body weight on you as you walk to the car.
By the time you guys get back to your place, he’s practically sleep walking. The only thing on his mind is taking a hot shower to soothe his muscles, and heading to bed. The aftermath of game days aren’t all that bad though, because even if you didn’t show, you’re always there to kiss him when he’s home and massage his shoulders, and cuddle him to sleep; and that’s his favorite part.

synopsis : with finals approaching, your prof sets a project for you to submit and luckily for you, you have god awful team mates. so, you study with jisung at the library, grinding to try and finish everything before the deadline.
genre : college student au, established relationship, fluff
pairing : han x gn!reader
warnings : mentions of immense lack of sleep, frustration, shitty team mates
everyone says that when you get to college, it will be a breeze. piece of cake. just partying and having fun. boy, was i wrong to believe them.
to say that college is ‘fun’, more so manageable is the understatement of the damn century. layers upon layers of projects, with a cherry on top that is finals. it all makes some kind of disaster sundae that i hate with a burning passion.
this time for year 2, our lovely lecturer decided that it would be a lovely idea for our finals would be a group project.
how wonderful.
“who knew that i would become the one doing most of the work? totally not predictable at all.” i thought, typing vigorously - working on my group’s powerpoint slide that we had to present by the end of the week.
i was running on barely any sleep, a couple of monster energy drinks, and candy. the classic combination for a normal college student who has to stay up late, burning the midnight oil in an attempt to try and cramp in more studying.
i was extremely irritable, as anyone would be if they were assigned both a thesis paper and a slide-show to present for finals that was due in a week.
“nice, the bullet points don’t make sense either,” i sarcastically mumble under my breath, the tone of voice becoming more exasperated as time went by.
the table jisung and i shared in my apartment dining room was mostly used by me, my notes and worksheets sprawled haphazardly across the table. some even lying on the floor in my failed attempts of picking them up and being systematic.
jisung sat across from me, with big headphones covering his ears from my potential swearing, making him look slightly like princess leia from star wars. though his eyes were fixated on his laptop screen, he had noticed the grimace that has been on my face for the past few hours.
he nudged me with his foot from under the table, breaking my intense eye contact with my laptop screen. lines of worry and concern were evident on his face; he had the ‘are you okay’ look on his face, and a small smile that he put on to show sympathy. i waved a dismissive hand, shaking my head before typing furiously again.
however, my typing session was once again disrupted by my phone, which i forgot to turn off.
ding! one new notification from ‘gremlin 1’
gremlin 1 -
yo dude, i know this is a lot to ask of you, but can you help me do my slide? i have work for the rest of the week TT
you -
wtf, why is this so sudden? i thought you purposely changed your work schedule so that we can do the project tgt since no one else is?
gremlin 1 -
i know, but smt just came up, and my boss is an asshole that way. can you please do a favour and help me? just this once i promise :|
you -
i’m taking the credit.
gremlin 1 -
its only fair that way, thanks again.
read at 3.00pm
“fantastic.” i grumbled, the urge to throw my phone out my apartment window becoming increasingly tempting; my hope left for the project had nearly and completely gone down the drain. i could have easily declined, but i have placed in too much effort for the entire project; not just for the person i had the most faith in to not do their job which bring down our group total.
when i realised that throwing my phone was not the best idea, i huffed and let out a big ol’ sigh, re-reading my group mate’s message before slamming my phone down onto the table out of sheer frustration.
the slam was loud. really loud. loud enough to make jisung flinch though he had music blasting through his headphones. his eyes widened at the extent of my frustration, my previously buzzing phone now dead, lying flat on the table. he eyed it for a moment before setting his headphones on the table and getting up.
his actions had gone unnoticed by me, my irritation making me unaware of my surroundings.
“hey is everything okay, flower?” jisung asks, smoothening his hands over back and shoulders, making me melt into his touch instantly. his lips were pressed onto the back of my neck, his warmth spreading heat all over my body.
“no, sadly.” i say while closing my eyes, his hands now massaging my tense shoulder muscles.
“maybe take a break for a while? also, i’m setting this aside for obvious reasons.” he spoke gently with a heart-warming smile, taking my phone and placing it onto the shelf that was the furthest away from me; before turning around to face me again. his actions did not fail to tug at my heart strings, making me finally break out in a smile after grimacing for hours on end.
“there’s the smile i fell in love with..” the words came out of his mouth without thinking, as he stared at me, gaze full of adoration and love. pink bloomed in my cheeks, a shy grin forming on my lips.
“thank you, baby.” i was extremely grateful to have jisung by my side in tough times like this. if not, i would have definitely thrown out my phone at the next slight inconvenience.
“do you want to talk about it?” worry finding its way back to his voice.
“maybe later, i need to finish this shit first.” i sighed, running my fingers through my hair, pushing back the bits that had fallen onto my face.
he chuckles at the clear dread in my voice, eyes bright and shining, curved into little crescent moons. “alright, love. i’ll wait till youre done,” he says, combing his fingers through my hair before pressing a delicate kiss to the top of my head.

Red Flags in Class Syllabi
Hello, here I am with another post full of advice for university and like most of my posts, it comes from personal experience. A little backstory on this: my first year of university, there was this theatre class I was in where everyone had already become friends or knew each other from high school drama festivals. We always had to do group work where we chose our own groups and I was always alone and did everything in my power to pretend like I wasn’t without the prof noticing. I was miserable and had had multiple panic attacks during or because of that class. However, I was a first year former gifted student who didn’t want to switch classes. I hit a breaking point one night when I was sobbing on the phone to my mom and she made me get up and drop the class. At that point, it was too late to register for one in its place and I am in my third year now, taking 6 courses online during a global pandemic to make up the credits so I can graduate on time. Ever since that experience, if I’ve had any major doubts about a class, I drop it without hesitation as soon as possible so I still have time to register for a new class. In fact, this semester alone, I dropped three classes and switched to new ones. Here are some red flags in course syllabi/things profs say during the first class
1. Group projects. We are in university, everyone, we are paying thousands of dollars for this and we should not be paying that much money for our grades to depend on others. Of course, and this applies to all of the red flags on the list, if the class in necessary for your degree (has happened to me a few times) sometimes you have to suck it up. Still, if you can drop the class without it messing up your degree, I would recommend it, especially right now when most people are fully online because group projects based completely online are even more hellish.
2. If a professor makes a point about how they don’t or hardly ever give As. This one is obvious. These profs like to make shit difficult for no reason and think they’re waaay more important than they really are. Most “I don’t give As” profs that I’ve had have been pretentious assholes.
3. Similarly, if a professor is bragging about how hard their class is/saying that you will likely fail. They are bragging about how bad they are at their job. They are there to teach you and if they advertise that all these people have failed their class, they aren’t trying hard enough. Also usually pretentious as fuck too.
4. If you miss more than two classes, you will fail the class. I’m not talking about profs having attendance policies, that is fine. What I’m referring to is the ones who take it to the extreme. I’ve seen syllabi where profs will fail you, despite all your other hard work, if you miss more than two classes. Like, it’s an automatic fail. It’s not worth the stress.
5. Any class where participation is worth more than 20% (and that’s pushing it). That shit is not fair to the shy students, students with social anxiety, and students who don’t like public speaking. Your work should be the basis for most of your grade, not whatever bullshit answer to class questions you come up with. I’m not a big fan of participation grades in general but to make them worth that much is not ideal (unless you’re not shy and extroverted and don’t have social anxiety, if so, I’m definitely jealous).
6. Workload. I’m not talking about amount of assignments (though if there are a whole lot, you might want to switch, you know what you can handle), I’m talking about readings every week. I dropped a class this semester because the prof said that every week we would have 60+ pages of readings a week which, according to him, wasn’t a lot. These readings for for a polisci class so it was all dense academic articles and government documents (snore) and I didn’t need the class for my degree. When you have a full class load with readings and actual assignments for all of those classes, a class assigning that many pages a week is a red flag especially when the prof doesn’t think it’s a lot. They will pile on the work.
7. Not listing all assignments in the syllabus. This is my pet peeve and I’m in two classes where we don’t know when assignments are due or what they are. This is a red flag as you need to be able to plan assignments and write dates down, especially in university. Surprise assignments and tests are the worst and set students up to fail.
8. Any time a prof/syllabus says “this class will change your life” or some variation of that. These professors are the most obnoxious people and none of the classes I’ve taken that did change my life ever told me so over and over again.
9. Any class with busywork as homework. By busywork, I mean homework on the online part of the textbook, exercises from the textbook, stuff like that. This is high school level stuff and you don’t learn anything from it. Also because they use the online quizzes that come with the textbook, that means you have to buy a brand new textbook to get that code so there will be no money saving here. I once had to spend $200 on a LOOSE LEAF textbook (they only offered it in that format) just to use the online quizzes. The whole class was like getting in a time machine and going back to high school.
10. If your first class is full of students and your second class has significantly less, that is a warning sign that they might have picked up on something you didn’t. Take another look at that syllabus and pay close attention to the prof that class and make your decision after that.
11. Check Rate My Professor!!! I cannot stress this enough. Some of the negative reviews are obviously people just mad they got a bad grade, but when students who got high marks are complaining, there is a problem. Take them with a grain of salt until you actually go to the first class, but make sure to read them before class so you know what to look out for. Also, in general, make sure to add your own ratings for profs while you’re there, both positive and negative because it really helps. I go to a really small school so our RMP reviews are limited so I do my best to post about each of my professors to add more.
12. Know yourself. If you’re first year, this might be more challenging, but you know how you learn best. If all of the assessment methods in a class are things you know you struggle with (multiple choice tests, short answer tests, exams worth 60% of your grade, long papers, research papers, etc.), use your head and make the right decision for you. If you suck at multiple choice tests and force yourself to take a class where that is all you do, it will be hell. If you choose classes based on assessment method, it will help your GPA, I promise you. I get better at selecting courses every year because I learn myself and what I’m best at and I have raised my GPA (not a whole lot, but usually by a decimal point) every semester because I am constantly learning what is best for me.

out of all the batboys i really didn’t know how to choose a major for him
but
i think he’d do law tbh, specifically criminal law
his main motivation to become a police officer in bludhaven had been to be able to help people in any way he can
i forgot if it’s canon or not but he does realize how corrupt it is and he quits but that’s another thing we won’t get into that lmao
anyways yes let’s just stick with law
meeting you !
he shares one or two courses with you
one that’s really early in the morning
and one that’s later on in the afternoon
dick is like a magnetic okay
anywhere he goes people are just attracted to him
like literally he will breathe
but someone call the ambulance there’s a person that’s passed out bc of how beautiful he is
but this is an 8 am class 😃
so there’s no way ur awake enough to notice him
coincidentally he sits next to you one time
and this is the one time
you decide
yeah lemme just fkn sleep is uni even worth it
dick definitely notices right away but he doesn’t say anything
he thinks you look so cute passed out on your desk like this 🥺
when the professor signals the end of the class, he watches as people file out and then he just leans over and nudges you slightly
you nearly punch him bc he scared you ❤️
he just laughs and goes “class is over”
you just sigh like the guilt starts to hit you and your heart begins to sink
and he sees your disappointed face and just goes
“i took a lot notes. i can share them w you?”
lifesaver in every single way dick grayson 😻😻😻
you had another class that you had to run to and you were rushing
he was like “dw i’ll just give them to you whenever i see you next”
and you 🏃🏻‍♀️ outta there
imagine ur surprise when u enter class at 12 pm and he’s there in all his glory
after the lecture is over, he walks up to you as you’re packing and asks if you want to go to the coffee shop nearby
to take his notes of course
and you finally register just how handsome he is
so obviously you say yes wtf
and the rest is history 😼
he asks you out, properly, pretty early on tbh
so unfazed lmfao
now you take naps on his shoulder instead of the desk 💞💞💞
soooo into pda
kisses u when he first sees you
when you’re parting ways
when he feels like it
straight up cuddles w during lectures i’m not even joking
it’s disgusting how cute you two are
gets you coffee for all those 8 am classes u have w him hehe
study dates always turn into karaoke sessions somehow don’t even ask lmao
jason todd
english literature
this is a collective agreement right?
right
definitely english literature
i dont even think he wants to go to uni but he’s going to waste time plus this is bruce’s money 😏🤑
your major doesn’t necessarily have to be english literature as well
but you share one class
and my god
you two disagree on everything
like every little thing
at this point if he says something and you slightly agree internally you’ll still say some opposing shit
that’s kinda what draws you to him
at first you genuinely had nothing against him
but then this kind of rivalry developed for no specific reason
but it was fun
and he was hot
so seeing him get flustered or angry made him even hotter somehow
but then
but t h e n
you’re not sure if your professor like ships you or something
so you’re assigned a debate topic on one of the books you’d discussed in class/one of the books you’ve read outside, and within each group are the two sides for and against
not only were you in the same team as jason, but you were on the same side as him
so you had to work with him
the audacity of the professor omg
but jason needs this course
and
well you don’t but it’s too late to back out now
you two meet in the campus library after deciding on a book with the other two of your team
and
honestly???
you two work so well together
like insanely well
during the debate you destroyed the other team
spoiler alert
doing so well with jason kinda made you like hot and bothered
seeing him in his zone
sexy <3
what i mean to say is
you both end up making out in some storage room lmfao
or hate sex 😏
professor has a phd in matchmaking 🤔😻
i think you two don’t admit you like each other
bc you’re both stubborn as fuck
but eventually you’re literally on his lap on his couch and it just hits you
and you lean back and go
“wanna go out w me”
and he just shrugs and goes “sure” and pulls you in for more kissing hehe
he’s not v good at the boyfriend thing tbh
you have to chase him around and be like “sir!!! did u forget about me huh!!!”
he doesn’t mean to i promise
he gets all blushy and flustered once he realizes
only ever into pda if he’s insanely jealous
will straight up make out w u regardless of where u are or who ur with lmfao
he’s still getting used to the little intimacies and all
debates in class are so much more fun now cause he finds it so hot when u get all riled up hehe
that eng lit professor is so happy for you two omg
tim drake
okay i also couldn’t really decide for him
but maybe he’d study something like physics (or maybe computer engineering/computer science)
idk u have to have a death wish to wanna major in physics so tim’s major it is
i’m not sure how it works for every other uni but my uni requires 6 credits of sciences to graduate
so let’s say for the sake of this hc u take like just the first level of physics to get 3 credits
and
you’re struggling 😃👍🏼
so you like approach your professor with a few questions before the quiz
but tim is also there
and he kinda makes small talk while you two wait outside the office
and he asks why you’re here
you show him
and he’s like “oh i took this course w the same professor as well, i could help?”
it’s like an angel had descended from the heavens for you personally
you take his number and decide to meet up with him after a few hours
he’s of so much more help than your professor would’ve been, even if ur prof is a really nice and smart person
and he’s super like
patient with you?
also he pays for all the coffee and snacks you’re getting after you already get them
ur like bruh i didnt
dont pay pls
and he’s like no im loaded let me 😼
swooning <3
and guess what!!
you ace the quiz out of some miracle
first thing you do is text him and he congratulates you
and then
bc ur not blind and tim is so fucking cute
you’re like “can i take u out to thank u”
tim’s brain stops working but !
he does say yes eventually
he becomes your designated physics tutor + your amazing boyfriend
being with tim is so like
chill
it’s a very relaxed time
lots of study dates! and cafe dates! all hours of the day whether the sun is up or not
into pda but to a certain degree
like yes of course have a kiss pretty baby
but also it will only be a small peck
any time anyone passes by like common rooms you two will be there snuggling on the couch, one or both of you completely passed out
damian wayne
business major 100%
or a bsba econ major, which is basically the business side of economics
he has to take over his father’s company one day duh
also i genuinely think damian would excel in this field
he’s a very keeps to himself kinda guy in uni
like you only ever see him in your common classes and then he just
disappears
anyways there was this party that everyone was going to, and damian wasn’t planning to
but dick accidentally read some groupchat’s messages and was like are u going
damian went 🏃🏻‍♀️
but dick was like go and try to make friends !!!!
and dames cant say no to his big bro 🥺 so he goes
stays in a corner on the settings app the entire time
like half an hr in he just leaves and is walking home/back to his dorm when you come like rushing up to him
you’re zooming
and then you just latch onto his hand and lean up to press a kiss to his cheek, whispering in his ear “this person’s been following me for like 15 mins just please go along w this”
he kinda stiffens but when he does notice that there’s a person eyeing you he slips his arm around your waist and just carries on walking
he walks you to your home/dorm and is like
so awkward
but it’s okay ! ur a people’s person enough for the two of you
you thank him so much over and over
and then you’re like
“can i take you out on a real date?”
and then he becomes ur real boyfriend hehe
is still super stiff but it’s only bc he’s so hyper aware of how attractive you are
and i’m super positive he doesn’t have that much experience with dating so
you hold the reigns
but he’s a great boyfriend all in all tbh
super attentive, super protective, and so loving
isn’t into pda especially on college campus but he does like subtle pda
things like linking your pinkies or giving you his hoodie to just parade around campus hehe
Tumblr media
end note; i’m sorry if these feel rushed or anything like. i used to be an avid writer for the batboys, but i just haven’t been feeling it lately. i still love to write from them bc i know these boys so well eeeeppp. anyways feel free to request some more!!

Coffee Diet - Kozume Kenma
Tumblr media
AU: Tokyo Ghoul
Requested
Tags/Warnings: GN! Reader, Gore, some angst (Though both aren’t too heavy or graphic I think), probably a poor representation of the manga/anime cause I haven’t actually read/watched it all the way through despite wanting to
Word Count: 3.3k+
Tumblr media
Kozume grunted. His kagune, the source of his inhuman power, made strikes at his cannibal attacker, forming a bone-like needle that stabbed down at the unknown ghoul. The concrete shattered like thick glass upon impact as the ghoul continued to dodge.
Tokyo (especially its many outskirt neighbourhoods) had a ghoul problem.
“You’re in the wrong territory if you think you can get away with that.”
The other ghoul only laughed, continuing his fast steps. The laugh itself was painful, scratchy and high pitched. It made Kozume wince.
The people of Kozume’s neighbourhood knew of the danger that lay waiting outside their doors, and thus an unspoken rule had been made among them. Don’t be outside past sunset. Those that did take a nightly venture typically were found mangled and half-eaten by morning. Broken bones peaking through bloodstained flesh, large bites taken out of their thighs, and torsos ripped open; delectable looking meal for a ghoul gone rouge. Kenma wouldn’t agree.
The dark alley that the ghoul had run into was walled off.
His opponent's black greasy hair hung over most of his face like a curtain, only letting a single black and red eye, and a sharp-toothed smirk poke through the strands. His hair swayed as he spun around.
“What does territory matter if there’s food to be had?” The ghoul screeched before his powered ghoul organ seeped out of his body and shot toward Kozume. It scratched his cheekbone, barely missing his eye, thankfully, but would take time to heal unlike any normal would.
Kozume hissed at the cut, willing his own kagune to slash at the ghoul who began climbing up the sides of the brick walls. The sharpened bone just missed the man’s food as he scurried over the ledge.
“See you later!”
The false blond stood there, yawning and rubbing his black and red eyes that were pinned to the building’s top. Heat from the rising sun began to warm his back. With the new light and extra heat, the tired ghoul raised his arms, stretching, as he took in his familiar surroundings. The port, or at least near it. Kozume stepped out of the alley to see the broken concrete that was left in his chase.
Another yawn escaped him before he tucked his hand in his red sweater’s pockets and walked the other way. He needed coffee.
Tumblr media
Kuroo’s shop, as lovely of an atmosphere as it created, was in the middle of a garbage dump. It didn’t help that some of that outside aesthetic carried into the cafe itself. The bell pierced into Kozume’s ear canal as he opened the front door to the dingy sight. Stained counters, chipped porcelain, yellow lights that were so off-putting that they stayed off all the time. It’s always been dark and gloomy, until today.
“Welcome! Take a seat, I’ll be right with you.”
That’s new.
Kozume stood in the doorway, watching your form dance and sway behind the bar. He noticed the music playing, soft and completely unnatural for the cafe. Your uniform, definitely not assigned by Kuroo, was crisp and clean, black shirt sitting on your form nicely. It was modest and professional. Maybe not assigned, but definitely Kuroo’s style.
He watched as you placed a small cake at another regular’s table, patting the old man’s signature plaid jacket on the shoulder. Whatever you said made the man laugh and twirl his fork happily.
His golden eyes, now settled after his too-early walk from the destroyed park, were trained on you as he sidestepped over to his usual seat in the corner next to the window. He sat, and took his eyes off your bobbing head as you turned around. His brow furrowed. The table was clean. Kozume looked around the cafe, noticing the lack of dust and stains.
He didn’t see you drop off a cup of coffee at a table, or walk his way until you were right in front of him.
“Hi, what can I get you?”
He jumped in his seat, causing his bobbed hair to billow out for a moment. Oh no, the look in your eyes immediately told him that you could see his rosy cheeks. He coughed. “Black coffee, please.”
Your smile was perfect.
“Hey, Kenma!” An unlikely saviour with black spikey hair appeared from the doorway. Kuroo strode over and waved you down as he slid into the seat across from Kozume. “Ah you got a scratch,” he hissed, immediately putting pieces together in his head. His head turned your way. “Do you mind getting me a coffee too, (L/N)?”
Kozume’s eyes followed you as you placed your pen and notepad back into your pocket and walked toward the counter.
“(L/N)’s new, just started yesterday and all the regulars love the new energy already. So tell me, what happened?”
Kozume sighed, looking down at his hands. “More keep coming. One disappears and another shows up. I’m too tired for this.”
Despite his vague tone, Kuroo knew what Kozume was talking about and sighed immediately. He leaned back in his chair. “I’ll be able to help you out soon enough, (L/N) has gotten a good hand on things, but I don’t want to leave them alone in the shop too suddenly. You understand.”
Kozume did understand. You, the human behind the counter, were a breath of fresh air in the musty town. You didn’t know, you couldn’t have. The demeanour of someone in the know in this neighbourhood wasn’t that positive. He knew that he wouldn’t get any help until you knew of the cafe’s main purpose.
“Take your time, I can handle it for how.” Kozume yawned and gestured to his marred cheek. “This guy might be a pain to deal with though.”
Just as he finished speaking the TV that hung above his head began to rattle on about destruction occurring at their neighbourhood’s port.
Kuroo winced. “That’s a pain, all right.”
Two white cups of black coffee hit the table's surface. Kuroo thanked you as you stood straight and reached into your apron’s pocket. Next to Kozume’s mug, you placed a large band-aid as you ripped open a disinfectant wipe. “May I?”
He nodded and let your fingers gently turn his chin in your direction. The wipe glided smoothly over his cheek but stung. He hissed and pulled his head back.
“Sorry, it’ll be over in a second, I’ll be quick. Can I finish?”
Kuroo stayed silent as he watched Kozume get cared for by his employee, only speaking when the barista left the younger ghoul’s side with a kind smile. “You’re blushing.”
“I will kick your ass,” Kozume sneered before lifting his mug up to his lips for a quick sip. “Why’d you hire a human anyway?”
Kuroo mirrored his friend’s actions and drank some of his well-brewed coffee. “They don’t hold any ill will toward Ghouls if that’s what you’re wondering, maybe a bit scared. But (L/N) is very kind.”
Kosume continued to yawn through their conversation, occasionally looking your way, only to immediately turn his head as soon as there was a chance of you catching his stare. He didn’t realize how long it went on until he heard your footsteps heading for the exit.
Kuroo twisted, resting his arm over the back of the chair to face you putting on your coat. “Walk home safe!”
“Will do!” Your smile glittered before you pushed the door open and walked through.
Kozume’s eyes continued to follow you through the glass until you turned out of sight.
“Do they live far from here?” he asked Kuroo, questioning his warning.
Kuroo slapped his hand on the table twice, gathering the energy to rise to his feet. He grabbed the long since empty mugs, whose stray coffee had begun to dry on the sides. “Only a 5-minute walk. But (L/N) has to walk through alleyways to save time, and well, even during the day, you can’t be too concerned for one’s safety.”
Tumblr media
“Ah, Kozume! Black coffee again? Would you like some food with that?”
Kozume’s stomach churned at the thought of putting something other than coffee into his system. “I’m alright, just the coffee is fine. Thanks.” Hands stuffed in his pockets, he walked to his corner. “And Kenma is fine.”
“Then, please, call me (Y/N).”
The cafe smelled cleaner than the weeks prior. Cleaning solution seems to sit right under Kozume’s nose and punch him every time he breathed. Taking his seat, he immediately noticed the lack of smudges on the window.
Kozume tried to give you a kind smile as you set his cup of coffee on the freshly cleaned table. He could feel heat crawl up his neck and settle underneath the skin of his cheeks. He gulped, readying himself to separate his lips and speak.
“You seem drained, has work been alright?” You beat him to the punch.
“Ah ya, work.” He didn’t have a job. “It’s been alright, just a bit draining because of the night shift. How has school been?”
Kuroo was quick to get you both well acquainted after your first meeting. He carried conversations until Kozume was willing enough to speak for himself. The blond was thankful for that, knowing that if he had been left alone by your side no familiarity would have been built.
“Oh, the usual. I have a few assignments to finish but nothing too overbearing. I did read an interesting article about social relations and hierarchy of ghouls in society. It was a bit depressing but educational.”
Kozume choked on his coffee, hunching over the table as he lifted a fist to his mouth. Just as the ragged coughs began to subside he felt your hand gently rub his back, sending him into another fit of coughs.
“What’s the assignment about?” he asked, settling down.
He noticed the concerned look on your face as you pulled napkins out of your pocket and set them on the table. “Ah well, I’m studying public health and humanities, and my prof told us to choose a disadvantaged group to write about. Yada yada, so on so forth. I chose ghouls.”
He gestured for you to sit with one hand, waving at Kuroo with the other as he wiped down the main counter. You smiled and took the seat across from him.
“You believe ghouls are disadvantaged?”
Your brow furrowed, pondering. “Well ya, in some ways. Maybe not in strength and power, but ghouls are rather hated in society don’t you think?”
Once again, while preparing to speak, he was cut off by the overhead TV switching audio. Listening to the graphic words coming out of the reporter's mouth, Kozume sighed and raised a hand to push against his temple.
The distressed look on your face made him pause. A pit grew in his stomach as your concerned face turned to Kuroo, who was calling you back to your station. You were quick to bring back your smile. “Enjoy the coffee, and rest when you can.”
Kozume returned your smile meekly but was focused on the grotesque details the reporter listed, unable to stop himself from imagining you, defenceless, in that sort of danger. He couldn’t stomach the coffee.
Tumblr media
“(Y/N), I really don’t think I should leave you here alone after dark.”
You sighed, looking to your boss with an unimpressed smirk. Kuroo squinted, lips pursing as he watched your knowing smirk turn humorous.
“Testu, don’t you have work to do at night? My walk home may be a lot safer, if you get to that, no?”
Kuroo cursed, punching the wooden counter with a dull bumping sound. He groaned. “How did you know?”
You laughed, shifting the position of your hands on the wooden poll and continuing to sweep the floor of the empty cafe. “I study! It may not be so obvious but don’t you think I’d pick up on you being a ghoul after a few weeks?”
“I mean maybe, but I was hoping you didn’t know!”
A light scoff shot off your tongue and through your teeth. “I would think you’d be relieved, now you don’t have to be so cautious around me.”
Kuroo picked up the washcloth he had been holding earlier off the counter and began to wipe the wooden surface down again. “No harm in caution. Even if you do know.”
“Ya, ya, just don’t show me a severed limb. I can’t do gore.”
Kuroo laughed and tossed the damp towel onto the edge of the metal sink. His arms shifted to his back to aunty the black apron around his waist. “Are you sure you’re okay here alone?”
The TV’s sound changed to the news’ intro tune as you grabbed the remote and turned it off. You gave the ghoul a warm smile. “I can handle it. Go go.”
The sun was already over the horizon by the time you were ready to leave. You stood on the inside of the door, punching in the pin code to the security lock. It beeped, giving you the warning to leave and lock the door. Once done, you pulled your sweater a little tighter on your shoulders and shoved your hands in the pockets.
You focused on the sound of your rubber souls stepping on the concrete and the occasional tick of a pebble getting kicked. Street lights flickered, or at least the ones that were working did. Walking upon a burnt out light, you took the marker to turn down the neighbouring alleyway.
Two steps in was all it took before you lifted the collar of your weather over your nose. The putrid smell wafted your way from the dumpster. “Ugh, it’s not garbage day tomorrow is it?” Setting closer towards the opposite wall, you help your breath and face forward. Until the burnt-out light flickered on.
You halted, head frozen forward as you looked out of the corner of your eye. Immediately your stomach churned and your throat began to pulse uncomfortably.
First, you noticed the pool of dark red blood that was slowly growing, nearing your shoes. Then it was pieces of loose skin and grey hair, stained as they floated in their puddle. Your heart seized at the sight of a ragged plaid jacket that was recklessly torn. You searched higher.
A single red iris surrounded by a black gloss stared at your profile. The rest was obscured by pin-straight greasy hair except for a large, inhuman smirk that showed off shark-like teeth covered in blood.
You cautiously removed your hands from your pockets, watching the poorly dressed skeletal like figure’s hunch move up and down as he breathed.
One beat.
You saw his claw-like fingers hold the wrinkly hand of the severed arm like a possessed lover. Your foot shifted.
Two beats.
The ghoul’s head tilted, revealing a tube-like pound of pink flesh hanging from his fangs. You gulped.
Three beats.
You ran.
Pulse already off the hertz, you sprinted with all your might to the flickering light at the other end of the alley. A stupid move, but taking the time to turn around wasn’t an option. Each step sent a jolt into your stomach. Your footsteps were much louder than before, but your blood was drowning it out. The lamp was so much slower now.
You froze suddenly. Stopped by a tug on your arm. Vertigo suddenly hit and the lamp was pulled further away. Then you recalled the tug, and noticed the increased pulsing in your arm, then felt your sweater become sticky and heavy. You looked to the side and down.
Were bones supposed to stick out like that?
You hardly registered it’s presence before the spike-like bone was torn from your limb, sending you into another fit of screams.
The light at the end of the alley flickered again, before going completely dark.
Tumblr media
His heart raced, blood pumping through his ears like crazy.
“Calm down Kenma! You can’t go crazy like this!”
“I have every right! You heard that scream, didn’t you? It was (Y/N)!”
The blonde’s kagune went wild, thrashing about and nearly knocking Kuroo over in the process. Said ghoul didn’t flinch, only brushing away the agitated organ with a push of his own.
“I know, but you have to—”
He was off, launching into the air and onto the rooftops, following the smell of your spilt blood before Kuroo could finish his sentence. The black-haired man swore, quickly following suit.
The sight was expected, horrifying, but not surprising.
Whoever’s intestines were falling out of the ghoul’s mouth, Kozume couldn’t tell, but he wasn’t gonna let the ghoul he had been hunting get another chance to make a meal out of your body if he could help it.
“GET OFF!”
Something cracked as the long-haired ghoul’s body flew off yours, smashing against the brick wall of the alley. Kozumes sharp-pointed kagune pinned him through the stomach to the cracking brick.
He only gave you a glance. The sight made his stomach churn as if he were trying to eat a regular meal. Torn skin, visible bone, and blood everywhere. He wanted to vomit.
Behind him he could hear Kuroo’s feet land in the massive pool of blood, making it splash slightly. Their clothes would have to be trashed later.
Kozume gritted his teeth. Despite his boiling rage at you being injured, he managed to hold off his brutal assault against the bloodied ghoul until he heard Kuroo zip away with you in his arms.
Even in your current state, you’d be safer away from the scene.
Tumblr media
“I don’t think (Y/N) is going to be able to work for a while.”
“Some of the regulars are spooked, but relieved.”
Whatever was holding your arm like a boa constrictor was making sleep really hard. You groaned. Why did your stomach hurt?
“Ah, look who’s up.” Kuroo’s voice was as teasing as always.
Your sight was blurry when you finally came to. The first thing you noticed was the aggressive pulsing in your arm and stomach followed by a warm hand on your shoulder. You tried to shift.
“Ah stupid, don’t do that.” Kozume’s voice, despite a slight rasp, was as gentle as ever.
You sighed and squinted towards Kuroo who stood at the end of — what you were quick to realize—  was your hospital bed. His arms were crossed and the smirk he wore was humorous. “Kuroo, if you say a single word, I will gladly risk further injury to fight you.”
Kenma shut his eyes and rubbed your shoulder before reaching for a hot mug from your bedside table. Kuroo walked around to the opposite side to help you sit up. You watch a thick red sweater fall off your shoulders and onto your lap, in front of your bandaged stomach.
Kenma spoke quietly, “Your sweater was torn to pieces.”
“Like my body?” you joked, only to get a sour look from the man in return. “Sorry.”
He sighed again and handed you the steaming mug. “Here, drink this. You need food.”
Kuroo walked back to the end of the bed, letting Kozume take care of you from then on.
“Coffee is considered a food now?”
Kuroo let out a short chuckle, making you tilt your brow in his direction. Kozume coughed, placing the mug down quickly to lift his red sweater off of your lap. He draped it back onto your chest, tucking it between your shoulders and pillow, then slowly guiding your arms through the sleeves.
You rubbed your hands together for warmth as Kozume offered you the hot mug again. You took it, thanking him with a shining smile. You once again failed to notice the rosiness of his cheeks, even if Kuroo didn’t.
“You won’t be able to stomach anything else, sorry.”

hi! i wanted to say i love reading your reflections on teaching, and in general i really look up to/am inspired by your thoughts regarding education and academia. if it's not too much to ask (completely understandable if it is, in that case please disregard!) i would love to get your advice on college related things?
i had pretty significant academic struggles throughout grade school, and ended up dropping out of college after a year. i would've graduated this may, so lately i've been considering going back and finishing my bachelor's. but i've been waffling on this decision because of 1) anxiety about having to drop out again, and 2) some confusion about what i actually want to study. i guess i'm wondering, is it worth it to start from scratch? my struggles were mostly about mental health stuff & difficulty keeping up with coursework—i loved being in the classroom, working with professors, learning from other students. i like being challenged intellectually, but if i have issues with followthrough, is there a way to work on that??? i know these are Big Questions, lol--whether they are answerable or not, cheers and thank you and i hope you are doing well these days. <3
hey! happy to give my thoughts, for what they're worth. you know your situation better than i do so the specifics may or may not be relevant, but i can give some advice just based on seeing lots of students pass through four-year programs!
i've worked with a number of students who took time away from college and came back to finish later. i took a year off myself in the middle of college for mental health reasons, though my school allowed you to take a two-semester leave of absence for any reason (so i always had the safety net of knowing i could come back without having to reapply or start over). in my experience, time away is almost always a good thing. sometimes people just really need that break from the stressors of the college environment! but more importantly, i think people benefit from having a few years' experience living and working in the world.
even though it can be intimidating to come back to college as an older student, i think older students or nontraditional students who took time off and came back tend to underestimate how much more confident and assured in themselves they'll be once they're back in the classroom. working out in the world for a while, even if it's not a job that you especially love or feel is relevant to your long-term goals, tends to help you build more trust in your own ability to get stuff done, manage responsibilities, and be an adult person in the world. in your time away, you've probably grown more than you think, and you may find that some of the things you struggled with at 18 just don't feel as daunting anymore. or they might feel daunting, but you also have more experience talking and working with other people, and you may feel more confident in seeking out & using your college's various academic success resources.
have you considered a two-year college as a possible next step? one of my advisees this year was an adult student who went to college for a year, dropped out, served in the military for four years, came back to do an associate's degree, and decided he liked school enough that he wanted to transfer to our university and finish his degree. (now he's going on to do a phd next fall!!!!) he's one of the most passionate advocates for community colleges i've ever met, and he's stayed actively involved in our local CC community & now mentors recent transfer students at our university. he's talked at length about how CCs are this amazing way for students to explore their interests without having to take on the huge price tag of a four-year degree, within a learning community that's much warmer, more responsive to student needs, and more accepting of the diverse paths that lead people to & through higher education. i wonder if you might consider taking a semester or a year of courses at your local CC, to dip your toes back in and see if you're still feeling energized by the experience.
you might find that some of the courses aren't intellectually challenging enough, but this might also be a wonderful opportunity to create the kind of learning experience you want to have. i was a full-time community college student for a year during my year away from yale, and while i'm sure i was just INSUFFERABLE in many ways, i had a prof in my Western Civ course who was really generous with his time/energy and met with me outside of class to help me figure out how to make the papers into something that i found really exciting and challenging to write. so the class kind of became what i made of it, and i got to read some stuff (dostoevsky!!!) that sent me down all kinds of interesting unexpected rabbitholes. the former CC grad i mentioned above was an extraordinarily bright student who would always go to office hours and ask his profs for more recommended readings, and he ended up becoming a TA for one of his courses and helped them redesign basically their entire intro humanities curriculum as a student advisor. so your CC experience can absolutely be what you make of it. and even if your profs can't give you that kind of support, you could practice doing it for yourself, setting little challenges for yourself either focused on the intellectual aspects ('I'm going to read and cite two scholarly sources in this paper, even though it's not required') or on developing strategies for effectively managing the workload ('I'm going to schedule a writing center appointment on Thurs, so I have to finish this paper two days before the deadline—and then I can devote my weekend study time to practicing for my Spanish test').
CC would be a slightly lower stakes environment for you to try out college again— lower-stakes both in the sense that it's cheaper (so if you decide you don't want to continue, you're not out as much money / don't feel compelled to go on to justify the debt you've taken on) and in the sense that the workload might be more manageable for you as you readjust to academic life and build systems & structures that work for you. as you probably have gathered from this blog, i am a HUGE believer in doing lower-stakes things many times over to build your own confidence and your trust in yourself, and then gradually scaling up the difficulty. by the time you reach the hard thing, you've already built up this strong image of yourself as a person who can handle challenges (and you've also had the chance to identify areas where you struggle & experiment with developing workable solutions).
if a two-year college isn't something you're especially interested in, i think it's definitely possible to start a four-year degree again. if that's the path you choose, i would strongly recommend reaching out to students in some of the degree programs you're tentatively interested in. people are almost always happy to share their ~wisdom~ (see: this ask response, lol) and most people love being asked for their thoughts on the pros and cons of something they know well. so you could get an honest sense from students of what the program is like, what the workload is like, and how useful or engaging people find the required courses for the degree. but also know that it's pretty normal to take courses all over in your first year or two (you have the advantage of having done a freshman year before, so you probably know this!), so you might just want to plan to try out a bunch of different things, with the goal of narrowing your focus by the end of your first year, or midway through your second.
i would also HIGHLY recommend spending lots of time familiarizing yourself with the resources your university has to offer. learn everything you can about the kind of mental health counseling and support they offer to students, and see if there are things you can set up in advance for yourself before you even step foot on campus. for instance, our university offers individual counseling, but they also have free groups that meet every week or two around different topics (coping with stress, students in recovery, etc) that are led by a counselor. check out your university's writing center or peer tutoring centers, too, and set up a standing appointment once a month or once a week or whatever, to bring in something you're working on—so that you know that every week, you're going to talk with someone about what's going well and what you're struggling with in your assignments.
you might also want to look into your university's services for students with disabilities office, as they can help you figure out if you are eligible for various kinds of accommodations or additional support (extra time on exams, notetaking services, recorded lectures, etc). i know you mentioned that you've dealt with academic struggles in grade school, too. if you think it's possible that there may be underlying learning differences that are affecting your academic work, it might be worth seeing if they can help you find lower-cost testing, so you can get a diagnosis that qualifies you for additional accommodations and university support.
many schools, esp large public universities, also have resource centers and mentoring programs for students from specific demographics who may benefit from additional structure and support in their early years of college. my university has a variety of resource centers and programs for students from low-income backgrounds, first-gen students, students who transferred from community college, etc. you don't have to take advantage of ALL of these resources, but proactively establishing a support network long before you need it is a really good way to set yourself up for success. and even just doing the research will probably help you feel more confident in your capacity to 'follow through', since you'll know that you're going into this with your eyes wide open AND with a detailed plan for what to do if you run into some of the same obstacles you encountered the first time around.
speaking of detailed plans: i find it helpful sometimes to do IF-THEN exercises with students when they're stressed about something on the horizon or unsure about whether they can handle some new challenge. IF-THEN is just what it sounds like: 'IF this thing I'm nervous about happens, THEN I'm going to do X, Y, or Z.' what i like about this exercise (i use it with myself too aha) is that it acknowledges that sometimes the thing you're dreading DOES happen. sometimes the professor you emailed for an extension says no. sometimes the TA doesn't understand why you're confused about the assignment. sometimes you don't have time to finish the reading before class. sometimes you overschedule yourself and you have to pull an all-nighter to finish two papers on the same night. scary things, confidence-shaking things, happen all the time, but they are rarely fatal! and there can be something really powerful about acknowledging and naming the thing you're concerned about, and then generating a few next steps you could take, should the thing you're dreading come to pass. i could see you doing something like this as you start thinking about the things that tripped you up last time, or made it difficult for you to balance the workload. if X happens, then what could you try next? giving yourself a few options means that you already have backup plans, too, which can make the whole situation less terrifying. if this happens, i might have to try this, or this, or this, and those things might not be the most fun or the easiest to do or the 'best' thing academically, but they'll get me through this difficult moment mostly in one piece, and once i'm through it i can look back on it and learn from it, or adjust the structures i've built for myself moving forward, to reduce the chance that X happens again.
PHEW!!! sorry this got so long but that is just the RISK YOU TAKE when sending me anons 😅 i hope that some of this is helpful to you, or at least sparks some useful thinking for you, even if it's not all directly applicable to your situation. i would say that if you love learning and find being in the classroom exhilarating, then you should absolutely go back to college! but that doesn't mean you have to go back right away, or that you have to go back and do it exactly the same way you did the first time. there are lots of possible paths to higher ed, and there's no particular rush—college will always be there, if it's something you decide you want now or at some future point in your life. i would also just reiterate again one of the core Themes of This Blog, which is that the brain is NEUROPLASTIC, and that humans have a truly astounding amazing capacity to change, grow, and learn new things (including new ways of getting around old obstacles or working through old challenges). just because you struggled the first time doesn't mean you are doomed to repeat that pattern. if you can spend some time thoughtfully reflecting on what you found most difficult to manage the first time through, you are better equipped to make plans, design new structures for yourself, and build the support networks that will help you thrive in college.

List of apps I use (1/?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calendar
- This one has to be one of my absolute favorites, especially now. With online classes, it’s hard to keep up with tasks, especially when your profs suddenly give updates in the middle of nowhen. It lets you color-code your tasks, set times and reminders, add locations and descriptions, set recurring events, etc. It even lets you customize the app icon color, themes and widgets (did I mention that all these features are FREE?). The homescreen widgets are the absolute cherries on top. You can place two types of widgets: (1) the monthly overview of your calendar, and (2) the detailed list of things you need to do on certain dates and times. I personally have both widgets on my lock screen. You can even customize the font size and the opacity of the widgets (like if you still want to see your wallpaper or not).
Why is this helpful: Deadlines. Honestly, deadlines are hard to keep track of, especially with online classes. This helps me keep track of deadlines, activities, lectures, etc. However, I only use this to keep track of schedules set. I use other apps to plan out my day so my calendar isn’t so overloaded and also hard to keep track of. [Pro tip: I use to do lists and calendar printables when it comes to planning and prioritizing, but I’ll explain further next time.]
Notebloc
- I had Notebloc before I had Cam Scanner and I’ve been using this ever since. I can’t compare it to Cam Scanner because I’ve never used that, but here are things I like about it: Like Cam Scanner, you can also adjust the borders to fit the edges of the page you are scanning (that’s all I know about Cam Scanner lol). For Notebloc, you also have an option to do batch processing which is very efficient when scanning a lot of pages. There are also filters that you can use to make pictures more vibrant or words more readable. You can save files as PDF documents or as pictures, and have options to send it out immediately after scanning without having to download the file. You can also organize your files into folders, move and edit individual pages after scanning, etc.
Why is this helpful: This is helpful when sending out some notes to a friend, scanning your answers for assignments, saving PDF files for your readings, scanning certificates, etc. It is better to scan with your internet turned off because the ads can be a tad annoying.
Study Bunny and Forest
- Honestly, I can’t choose between these two apps which is why I have them both on my phone. Most of you may recognize Forest as it is a popular pomodoro app within the studyblr/studygram/studyvlog community. The goal of Forest is to focus on your work and avoid distractions from your phone by planting virtual trees. The tree dies when you exit the app and look at other apps while your work session is still on going. This is really helpful to minimize distractions. However, if you only have one gadget to work with (like if you are just studying from a textbook and rely on your phone for internet), this is going to be a problem because you can’t look things up on Google. I can’t even look up words on my phone’s dictionary! This has proven to be a hassle when I’m on the go studying and I don’t have my laptop or tablet with me.
For Study Bunny, it doesn’t have this feature so it might be easier to get distracted. But I found that it can actually strengthen my discipline because I have to force myself to not be tempted to exit the app. But Study Bunny is so cute that I actually don’t want to leave the app. If you guys know the game Pou, Study Bunny is like that but you earn coins by studying. Aside from this game feature, there are also built-in study features like to do lists, flashcards, and ambient music (I don’t use the ambient music feature because I either prefer silence or my own playlists, but we’ll get to that next time). The goal of this pomodoro app is to keep your bunny happy by buying them things from the shop, feeding them, or studying.
Overall, I would recommend Forest if you are studying at home or at a group study with your friends where you can have access to the internet while minimizing the distractions from the notifications of your phone. I would recommend Study Bunny if you were on the go, or if you like the mini game interface (I personally prefer that because I have another external reason as to why I should work while the timer is running).
Why is this helpful: The pomodoro technique is for you to work more efficiently and productively, and overall avoid procrastination and burnout. I personally like using apps like these instead of just timers because they are designed like fun mini games or enable you to minimize the distractions from social media.

Got my first 1.00 in grad school!
Tumblr media
I just want to take the time to share my happiness lately.
When the pandemic began last year, I was saddened by a lot of things. One of them was the lost opportunity to study cognitive-behavioral therapy (or CBT) in-depth when I enrolled in a class. Psych 249 - that was the course code. I was excited for that class because CBT is a popular form of therapy these days. And surprisingly, I learned that it was an umbrella of many therapies that tackle the cognitive and behavioral connection. To top of it, one of my favorite professors, Dr. Divine Love Salvador (awesome name, I know), was instructing us.
Before the lock downs and quarantines and face-to-face classes were still done, I was really looking forward to this class. CBT was a therapeutic approach that I really wanted to hone into and explore. Not to mention, Doc Div (my prof's nickname in school) is an expert in this approach. She and her fellow faculty in the clinical program believe in the power of experiential learning when it comes to training. Our class would meet once a week for three hours. She would discuss theory on the first hour, have a pair demonstrate a technique in front of the class in the second, and have us do our own activity and psychotherapy simulations on the third. The learning was so amazing! I was really looking forward to my turn in the demo since I saw how helpful the post-demo cliniquing was. Plus, my classmates were all insightful people.
Partway in the semester, classes halted due to the pandemic. We were all of a sudden left to our own devices to study. This wasn't surprising to me since I entered graduate school. Grad school has really shaped me to become an independent learner and thinker. But, the complication was the pandemic and the redirected goals to survive and thrive. Doc Div emailed us instructions on the stuff we were "required" to submit with a deferred deadline to a year later - this year.
We were asked to write a case formulation paper - which is a common skill for any psychotherapy class - about a fictional case of an eating disorder. We were also asked to come up with a CBT-informed project that aimed to either educate or be therapeutic for a target audience. This was a group effort and I was grouped with my friends, so I was excited. And lastly, we had to write a final reflection paper based on questions she provided for us in the email. These seemed a lot to finish, so I was thankful for the deferment of our deadlines (and grades).
A few weeks later, as COVID-19 cases were rising and a lot of people were experiencing various psychosocial issues, our university's mental health clinic decided to open its services for free to our own students and staff, frontline healthcare workers, and their respective families. Doc Div was quick to email us the opportunity to volunteer for this initiative for extra credit. I didn't mind the credit at all, yet I decided to volunteer because I wanted to help. And I also realized that the learning I would get from this opportunity would be substantial. Lo and behold, I was assigned to my other professor, Ma'am Sandy Ang (my prof in Psych 264, the Psychopathology class), as my clinical supervisor. In a span of 6 months, I met with a total of 4 clients, each having their own cycles of supervised psychosocial support sessions with me. It wasn't until the end of the year did I accomplish the requested reflection paper. I'll tell more about my experiences here in another post.
Months leading to the deadline, I collaborated with my group to finish an educational blog site about learning skills on boundary setting. We were somewhat happy with the outcome; and we knew that we can improve on it further. Likewise, I have been reading the case given to us for the formulation paper. I started writing bit by bit since the previous year, but only to organize the details. It wasn't until the final two months that we were told that the paper could be done as a group. The idea clicked: I have to work with my group so I could stay afloat from the stress. Luckily, I accomplished a lot in my own, so I only had to present them to the group, ask for their inputs, and add what was missing together.
The process was stressful, to be honest, even as a group. There was a lot of further reading, late night calls to discuss things, writing and preparing materials. It was chaotic, but I felt like I was doing something right and learning something new. Though, I couldn't help but wish for the time that I could "re-learn" all of this with a guidance of an expert or professor.
But anyway... we were buzzer beaters. Submitting by the 11:59pm mark and giving the final sigh as our emails with the requirements attached were making their way to Doc Div's inbox. I felt so much relief knowing how much hard work we've put into our requirements. It didn't take long for our profs to give us our grades from last year. I opened my student portal account and...
An uno?
An uno!
I was so shocked but thrilled that I felt like my hardwork paid off!
The thing is, the sem doesn't count to our final computation of our general weighted averages, so that kinda sucks. But, I'm happy to report how I was able to show some promise with the subject I wanted to learn so much from. Even if I felt alone for the most part, having my groupmates and our collctive efforts made me feel like it was all worth it.
I really do look forward to when the "newer" normal would present us the opportunity to come to school in person again. Online learning is an adventure, but like many I have taken, I get tired of it too. I also miss the things we take for granted, like the facial expressions or the ability to chitchat with my seatmate in class. It made my grad school life all the more fun. But until then, we gotta do what we gotta do.
Cheers! I hope you get your success in these trying times too.

Tumblr media
The jet was beautiful, and you expected nothing less for the rockstar in front of you.
Everyone had thankfully gotten through the security lines without a flash fan mob (bless sunglasses and big hoodies). Because you were taking a private jet, the group of y’all had to walk out onto the actual terminal and hop on an airport golf cart. Which sucked because it was still slightly dark out at 7am and 18 F/-10 C outside!
As another cart loaded up your suitcases to put them into the plane, your cart started to drive off towards the plane.
“Oh, Y/N?” Jeff turned to you has he was the one you sat next to in the flurry of events getting to the jet.
“Hm?” You looked up from your phone, having been scanning through some of the comments on your latest posts.
“I got a call from the intern and your extra luggage should be meeting up with us in Sweden.” You let the tension in your shoulders fall away from the good news.
“Thank you so much, it’ll be great to have a fresh set of clothing to choose from.” He gave you a smile and the cart slowed right in front of the high class air mobile you’d soon be in.
Everyone loaded up and before you realized the wheels had left the ground and you were on your way to Stockholm. Squishing into the comfy window seat you’d claimed, happy to be warm again, you pulled your laptop out of your backpack hoping to get through some pictures from the previous show and check up on your emails.
Harry and the band had dispersed throughout the plane, Sarah and Mitch sitting next to each other with the arm rest up so they could snuggle, Clare in the window chair facing opposite them with her book resting on the shared table between them. H was chatting with Jeff and Hélène in the seats in front of yours.
Ding!
1 New Email : Professor Clemet
Hello Y/N,
In regard to your recent email, I’ve spoken to the administrative board and because of your ‘certain situation’ we’ve decided to grant you impromptu abroad study. Please make sure to keep up with the assignments I post to the college online platform, as there are only a few left I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a good source for photos.
Best of Luck,
Prof
You did a little fist pump in the air as you finished reading the email. You thanked the stars your teacher was okay with you basically missing the rest of the school year.
A body plopped down into the chair next to you. “Whatcha so happy ‘bout?” Harry asked.
“My Professor sorta just told me she knows I’m with The Harry Styles and that she doesn’t live under a rock so its fine that I do school online while we tour.”
He laughed, hitting his head back on the soft headrest.
 “Well, that’s great news love.”
The rest of the flight was uneventful, basically just a bunch of tired musicians taking the couple hours they had to relax before the hustle started again.
A perk though was that you were all served a breakfast of toast, fruit, and yogurt. It definitely helped having something on your stomach before you had to brave the cold again.
As you all piled into the SUV Jeff had rented for time there, you turned to Harry who was sitting next to and offhandedly asked, “When do we get to the Air BnB?”
He looked at you with a confused expression as the car drove out of the airport.
“Huh what ‘re you—“
“Great news everyone, I’ve got a surprise!” Jeff said from the passenger’s seat, Hélène driving and paying attention the GPS on the dock.
“I’ve booked an Air BnB for the nights we’re here! It’s a big house that everyone will get to be hang out together in.”
The band cheered and Harry just chuckled, “That’s still so cool Y/N” he said looking up into your eyes again with a grin.
Tumblr media
Jeff kept to his word, the house was big and very pristine.
The ceilings were high and boarded with white wood panels. When you entered the house, the living room was to your left; it had a glass doors instead of windows so you could open them all and walk out onto the wrapped around porch. The were two black couches, a large coffee table, and a fluffy cream rug.
About 15 feet in front of the door was a staircase to the second floor and them to the left of that the entrance to the kitchen. It had a bar that separated the living room and kitchen but space flowing as you could still see anyone from both rooms. The kitchen had a white marble island, the stove was to the back of the wall, the sink was the left wall under a cute window that had small white shutters.
To your right at the front door was a large glass dining table that had 8 glossy black chairs.
On the right side of the staircase was a hall way with a sliding door to cut off the living room from the rest of the house. The nearest door was open to a bathroom and them a few more doors that you concluded were bedrooms.
In conclusion, your jaw may have opened when you entered the home.
“Girls call the upstairs bedrooms!” Sarah yelled out, earning a few groans from the boys and patted up the steps with her suitcase in tow.
You followed her as she turned right at the top, taking the first room to the left. You went to 2nd door and rolled your luggage in.
It was a lovely room, the theme was a soft pastel purple but not too much that it gave you retirement home vibes. The tall ceiling had purple wood panels, the walls white. The white wooden poster bed was against the right wall, it was laid with a violet duvet and pillows with to small matching nightstand on either side.
The opposing wall had an antique dresser and a tv propped on top. To left was a small closet you guessed and to the right of it there was a sliding door to the en suite (that had a claw foot tub!!!!) and at the back wall were glass balcony doors cover with sheer white curtains.
The last piece of furniture was a desk on the left side of the balcony doors, set with a lamp and some pens in a mason jar.
You flopped on to the bed after you moved your suitcase to the other side of the bed. You took a couple seconds to yourself before sitting up and taking your boots off and hanging your wool coat in the closet then headed downstairs.
You heard the guys chatting to each other from their rooms, something about if Chelsea boots were superior to Doc Martins? You shook your head and went into the kitchen, you ran your hand across the sleek island counter.
Then an idea popped into your head.
What if I cook for everyone tonight?
A smile to hold of you face as a plan started to form in your mind. You pulled your phone out and connected to the wifi at the house (thanks to a little sticky note on the fridge with the router and password) and searched up the stores around and what you could probably scrounge up for 7 hungry people.
You raced upstairs, wrote the address and your grocery list down on a spare piece of paper with one of the mason jar pens. You changed into jeans and threw on a long sleeve undershirt and then black turtleneck, tucking them into your pants. You slipped your wool coat back on, buttoning it up and tying the belt. You tucked your gloves into the pocket with your phone and wallet.
As you exited your room and entered the living room, you were met with Sarah, Clare and Harry propped up on the the two couches, watching…
“Is that Twilight?” You asked, a bit of a laugh in your question.
The brown haired boy turned to you at the sound of your voice, “Yes it is, yo’ve got a problem wit’ it?”
You shook you head, a smile on your face. “I’m going to the market up the road to pick up fixings for dinner tonight, I thought I could cook for everyone as like a big thank you.”
Sarah cooed at your happy exclamation, “Thats so sweet Y/N, I’ll think I’ll come with you if that’s okay?”
You nodded, “The more the merrier!”
Clare stood up from the couch, “Me too, we’ll make it a girls outing.”
The girls started chatting and headed up stairs to get ready. You turned to the boy in front of you, now wearing a childish frown.
“What about me?” He whined, flopping back to starfish the couch.
“Sorry Styles, your hair needs to pass your shoulders, but since you’ve cut yours your out of the girls squad.”
He shot up from his seat, giving you a loud hey! as you doubled over laughing. Harry stood up and took his wallet out of his pocket, pulling out a sleek black card and tried to hand it to you.
“If I can’t come, at least let me pay for the groceries.”
“Harry no! I can’t let you do that, this is my treat!”
He thrusted it into your hands, “The treat is you making it, I don’t expect you to pay for 7 peoples worth of food as a college student junebug.”
You blew a raspberry, knowing he was right. “Fine, thank you.”
He clasped his hands in front of him and bounced on the balls of his feet like her was a kindergartner showing his mothers the macaroni necklace he made for her, “Not a problem lov’.”
Tumblr media
The girls and you found the market easily.
You loaded up with zucchini, squash, some chicken breasts, lime and basil minute rice, and some yams. You grabbed a good bottle of wine as well.
Clare brought over some croissant and chocolate cookie dough, depositing both into the shopping cart.
Sarah grabbed cheese and crackers, as well as a tub of vanilla ice-cream.
The three of you checked out and bags in hand, headed back to the Air BnB. It was great time shopping with them, you felt like you got a bit closer to them both which was nice since besides Hélène (who had opted out of the shopping trip in order to look at photos) you were the only girls in the main traveling group.
Once back at the house, you unloaded the food, putting it away before slicing up the cheese Sarah had bought. You spread some crackers out onto the chopping board you had been using.
“Where is everyone else?”
You asked taking your coat, turtleneck, and boots off, then siting down on the couch next to Sarah and Clare.
The drummer grabbed a piece of cheese from the board while flipping through channels, “I think everyone is catching up on sleep, taking naps or working through emails, that sort of thing.”
You hummed and snuggled back into the cushions, watching whatever Sarah had set the tv to. The 3 of you watched a few episodes on HGTV, then stumbled upon The Golden Girls, which had you laughing till you sides hurt, and finally switched to The Prince and Me, commenting throughout the movie on the characters and situations they found themselves in.
As the credits rolled and the girls decided to turn the tv off and head upstairs to take showers, you checked the time. It was around 5:30, so you got up to start cooking.
As you marinated and seasoned the chicken, you looked to the stove to see where the timer was and instead saw something else that piqued your interest.
“Surround sound speakers? Hmm.” You tapped the panel that was on the left of the stove, which lit up and read ‘connect via bluetooth’. You grabbed your phone and hooked it up.
You scrolled through Spotify, debating what to play.
An idea popped into your head and you nodded to yourself, then clicked play on your playlist.
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
You started singing to yourself, setting the timer once you found it and popping the chicken and yams into the oven. You chopped the freshly washed zucchini and squash, clicking your heels together and bopping your head to the beat.
Sarah, accompanied by Clare and Hélène, came into the kitchen.
Simmer down, simmer down
They say we're too young now to amount to anything else
But look around
We worked too damn hard for this just to give it up now
If you don't swim, you'll drown
But don't move, honey
You put the knife down and picked up the spatula, using it as a microphone and pointing to Clare.
“You look so perfect standing there
In my American Apparel underwear
And I know now, that I'm so down
Your lipstick stain is a work of art
I got your name tattooed in an arrow heart
And I know now, that I'm so doooooown!”
You sang, twirling her around as she laughed.
“Hey Y/N, can I pop this wine?” Hélène asked.
“Go for it.”
Sarah found some glasses as the resident photographer got the cork popper.
Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Grabbing a pan and cover, you turned a stove burner on and put the zucchini and squash with a glob of butter plus salt and pepper in to cook.
The girls sat at the bar, so you came over of the kitchen section to parade around the foyer/living room area.
Let's get out, let's get out
'Cause this deadbeat town's only here just to keep us down
While I was out, I found myself alone just thinking
If I showed up with a plane ticket
And a shiny diamond ring with your name on it
Would you wanna run away too?
'Cause all I really want is you
Before belting, you checked to see if the hallway door was slid closed, thankfully it was so you turned back to your audience and gave the performance of a lifetime.
You look so perfect standing there
In my American Apparel underwear
And I know now, that I'm so down
I made a mix-tape straight out of '94
I've got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor
And I know now, that I'm so down
Hey! Hey, hey, hey hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
You look so perfect standing there
In my American Apparel underwear
And I know now, that I'm so down
Your lipstick stain is a work of art
I got your name tattooed in an arrow heart
And I know now, that I'm so down
During the song, you paused your jamming to see from your peripheral vision the sliding door open.
A just woken Harry came out in jeans and a t-shirt.
“Ohmylord, the food smells delicious. What’re you up to?”
He asked, watching you dance around him.
You smiled, “We’re singing!”
“Couldn’t you at least be singing one of my songs?” He huffed.
Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
You look so perfect standing there
In my American Apparel underwear
And I know now, that I'm so down (hey!)
Your lipstick stain is a work of art
You checked on the food, putting your make shift microphone down.
“Y/N can you turn the volume up for next song?”
Sarah asked while Harry snatched a sip of her wine.
“Sure” you said and moved the dial up, making the end of the song louder.
I got your name tattooed in an arrow heart
And I know now, that I'm so down
“I can’t believe you listen to this Y/N, I’d never pegged you as a boy band type of girl.” H laughed.
You walked back over to the group as the ending notes of the song died out.
“Hopefully something better comes on.” He quipped.
You're insecure
Don't know what for
Everyone froze.
Harry’s back was to you as he had started for the couch, you were scared he might not be to happy to hear one of his pervious band hits.
You could see the girls at the bar waiting with baited breath.
You're turning heads when you walk through the door
Don't need make-up to cover up
Being the way that you are is enough
You saw him take a big breath and you immediately started into an apology.
Everyone else in the room can see it
Everyone else but you
“Harry, I’m so sorry I’ll go turn it off—“
“Baby, you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell
You don't know, oooooooh ooooh
You don't know you're beautiful!”
You gawked as Harry bursted into song, all the girls’ shoulder’s sagging in relief. He came dancing over to you, twisting his hips to the song.
If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh
That's what makes you beautiful
You both sang to your hearts content, holding hands and twirling each other underneath your arms.
So co-come on, you got it wrong
To prove I'm right, I put it in a song
I don't know why, you're being shy
And turn away when I look into your eye-eye-eyes
Everyone else in the room can see it
Everyone else but you
Baby, you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful
If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh
That's what makes you beautiful
“Na na na na na na na na na na… Na na na na na na…” He sang into your face with a scrunched nose, making it sound high pitched and squeaky.
You sang the same thing back to him, the same sort of strange sound coming out of your mouth.
Baby, you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell
(You don't know, oh oh)
You don't know you're beautiful
Harry turned and bounded over the coffee table, hoping up onto it and belting the chorus.
Baby, you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful
Grabbing your phone, you snapped a picture of the crazy rockstar on the table top to post later.
If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Harry made eye contact and pointed to you dramatically, serenading you with this specific part of the song.
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh
That's what makes you beautiful
The song ended and applause erupted in the room, but you both held eye contact, breathing heavily from all the movement.
It was, strange, it’s like you seeing him in a new light all of a sudden.
A hand on your shoulder pulled you out of the trance, “That was fantastic! Oh gosh Harry you scared us for a second—“
Sarah went onto chat about the band and you shook your head slightly as you walked back to keep cooking.
Whatever that was, it’s over now so don’t dwell on it.
A half hour later, the food was served and the whole group was seated to dig in. You received a few mmm!s and Oh how I’ve missed home cooked meals, suffice to say: they liked it.
After plates were half empty, people started to chat a bit more, taking their time to finish.
“So Y/N, We about your crazy powers, can you tell us a bit more about you?”
Clare asked. You eagerly nodded and patted your mouth with the napkin before starting.
“Well, I’m in my senior year at NYU, studying Photography & Media Arts with a minor in Creative Writing.”
“That’s so cool! NYU?” Sarah commented.
You nodded and took a sip of water, “Ya, moved to Larchmont as a kid and got residency in New York and then worked my butt off to send a good portfolio in. But some miracle that accepted it and I got a scholarship on top of it which, not gonna lie, I bursted into tears on the subway when I read the email.”
Jeff scoffed, “I bet the superstar across the table couldn’t get into community college now if he tried.”
The table laughed at Jeff’s nudge to Harry and the offended expression he wore.
“Hey, I think I’d do pretty well! Even NYU!”
“Oh my Harry darling,”
You leaned on the table to get a bit closer,
“No Gucci loafers aloud.”
The group bursted into laughter as they watched Harry’s antics of waving his arms around in an X shape and mouthing NO.
You continued,
“I’m afraid you’d either get eaten alive by the business majors or absorbed into the philosophy department and never talk to anyone else again.”
Tumblr media
The boys offered to clean up after which you were grateful for.
You took a shower and changed into new pjs!!! As your suitcases had been delivered to the house from the flight they came over on.
You came down the stairs in your dark navy long sleeve and legged satin ensemble (don’t forget the fuzzy socks!) to see what everyone was up to.
The dishes were done and care was busy making the cookies she had bought.
You flopped down next to H, it was like second nature for the both of you; while he watched Clueless he opened an arm up for you and you snuggled down into his side, propping you phone up on his stomach to post the picture you’d taken.
“What do you think?” You held the phone up to his face.
“I look good, post it.”  You nudged him with you shoulder and smiled.
You did have to admit, he did look good.
Tumblr media
The concert was amazing, of course.
You were sad to be leaving the Air BnB, but alas you had to go.
Jeff and Mitch loaded the last of the luggage into the SUV and you all climbed in at the early time of 5:30 to get to the tour bus that was still parked at the arena.
Tumblr media
“Bye Stockholm.”
You whispered as you looked out the window of your bunk bed in the tour bus, inner curtain closed and ready to sleep again.
You took one more glance, and then closed the window curtain.

Writing Year in Review
This is the first year I’ve ever had such a productive fanfic output, so I thought I’d do a ‘Year in Review’ style post for my writing.
Amazingly my tumblr followers have grown hugely this year as well - i think I have about double the followers I had when I came back to tumblr after a couple years hiatus.  So if your new to following me, this is a good guide to all my recent writing!
Everything I’ve written this year is Cherik centric.  Somehow I managed to write 12 stories and post over 180k words to AO3.
The List
1) Downstairs Distraction: Originally a smutty little tumblr drabble. Charles meets Erik the morning after a very loud night of sex with his current fling. Things...happen. PWP. 2939 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19357660/chapters/46054333
2) Home Visit: Just a little tumblr drabble in response to the prompt: Family.A sweet, heart felt domestic cherik fic. Fluff. 714 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20114530
3) Airwaves: Charles is working as a DJ for the on campus radio station when he meets the newest addition to the on-air team: Erik Lehnsherr. Though Charles falls head over heels for Erik in an instant, he doesn't have the confidence to introduce himself - his whole life has shifted since his accident and romantic relationships have been off the table. Will Charles get the confidence to take a risk on love? 14,995 words.
Sweet little fic written for the Cherik Big Bang with lovely art by @ireneadonovan.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20169118
4) The Fall: Written to fill the prompt: "Raven seduces Charles' boyfriends to "check they're faithful". Charles finds out about Raven's sisterly interference and goes a bit off the deep end. 2673 words.
Written for the lovely @akasanata who sent me the prompt.  This fic mostly focuses on Charles and Raven.  Someday (I swear), I will have a follow up Cherik fic for this one!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20432939
5) The Things I Do For You: Charles brings a stray kitten to Erik's apartment. Taking it in is but one of the many things Erik is willing to do for Charles. 931 words.
Sweet and fluffy.  Written for the ‘They Deserve Better Challenge’.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20854652
6) You Are My Fire: A fluffy fic set during XMFC. A 'what could have been' snippet from the Westchester Estate. Inspired by the prompt: Fireplace. 698 words.
Another fluffy little fic for the ‘They Deserve Better Challenge.’
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20948093
7) Rumour Has It: Erik has just arrived to the US as a foreign exchange student for the year. It takes him less than two weeks to learn through the rumour mill that Charles Xavier is the biggest slut on campus. Thankfully, he has never had any trouble ignoring rumours. Until he and Charles are paired up for a group project that is, and Erik finds himself suddenly in Charles social sphere. Is Charles who everyone says he is? Or is he something... more? WIP, currently 2 chapters and 3998 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21021653/chapters/49998035
8) The Consequence of Hiding: Charles is completing his PhD at Oxford when he finds himself in dire need of a new job to support himself and Raven. Erik is a grumpy Mutant Student Counsellor who has yet to fill his student assistant position. Enter Prof. MacTaggert and her matchmaking ways to bring her student and her friend together (in platonic, professional compatibility, of course). Will things stay platonic for Charles and Erik? Only time will tell.
My big project.  Finally completed after working pretty much all year on it. Over 115K words.  23 Chapters.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18995308/chapters/45107560
9) It’s Just a Summer Thing: Erik, new to America and not fitting in at all, gets the opportunity of a lifetime: an invitation to an elite summer soccer camp. Erik is hoping to improve as a player, his mother is hoping he'll make friends. Over the years he does both, and maybe, just maybe, he finds something more than a friend.
Tooth Rotting Fluffiness. 6 chapters. 12,573 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21427033/chapters/51053647
10) Hollow: Added scene from X-men: Days of Future Past. Charles and Erik have a confrontation in a Paris hotel after the plane scene, but before the go to find Raven.Sometimes its the people who know you best, the people you care about the most, who can push you over the edge.
Written for the X-men Secret Exchange.  Angst, cherik style. 1516 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21595765
11) Someday I’ll Find You: Charles has spent the entire school year writing to his German pen pal. Though initially a class assignment, his pen pal has turned into his only friend. They talk about their lives, their dreams, their studies. They play chess and exchange book recommendations. Charles has never felt closer to anyone in his life. Until one morning at the Xavier estate, Kurt catches him writing a letter to his pen pal and all hell breaks loose.
WIP.  Collaboration with the incredible @msfbgraves. Currently at 13 chapters and 18,251 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20661824/chapters/49067759
12) At First Glance: Erik-- the CEO of a multinational company-- is always dressed to the nines fine suits. The people who surround him are no less. They're all well groomed, fit, and some better looking than top end models (men and women). But one day Erik meets a frumpy Professor in a fluffy cardigan, thick glasses, full cheeks and a slight pudge. Charles Xavier. His life will never be the same.
Written for X-men Madness.  Fluffy holiday goodness. 4,729 words.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21815806
And that was my year!
I think I will do another post tomorrow about the projects I have in the works for 2020 :)
Happy reading and writing fellow fic fans!

Have you ever dealt with anxiety with working with people? I'm studying physics and hope to go into high energy theory, but I really have trouble going to office hours and working with other students because it's way more comfortable for me to work alone, but I don't perform nearly as well. Any advice?
CW: anxiety, mental health
Hey there, anonymous! Thanks for the ask! Before I answer, I want to emphasize that (as per usual) my answers are based on my own experiences and are not representative of the full set of experiences out there. Furthermore, when I talk about anxiety (or anxiety-adjacent responses) below, I only mean being anxious to the degree of being uncomfortable, and not something necessarily requiring more substantial external support. I’m not qualified to give advice regarding the latter.
To begin:Yes, working with people absolutely makes me anxious sometimes. I stress out in anticipation of interacting with people I don’t know well, get jumbled up during conversations (”Am I living up to this person’s idea of me? Do they even have an idea of me??”), and I repeat interactions over-and-over again in my head after the fact even when they went totally fine. I’ve had to work on all of that via continued practice, as well as reminding myself that 1. most people aren’t jerks, so working with people is lower stakes than my brain wants me to think, and 2. jerks aren’t worth stressing over. But all of that’s more-so advice about social anxiety. I presume you want physics-oriented advice.
One thing I’ve noticed in my physics career specifically is that I’ve had significantly different experiences between working with people as a student vs. working with people as a researcher. In either case, I work best with people when I know explicitly what I desire from collaborating with them and take steps to meet those desires.
As a student: When I think about working with people as a student, I first think of things like completing homework or studying for exams. In these cases, people can be invaluable because they might know (for instance) where a specific problem is more-or-less solved in a textbook, have course notes they might like to share, or may have access to learning resources of which you’re unaware. The number of times I’ve spent many hours working on a problem only to find out that “oh, the prof took that straight from a different textbook which has a whole section about solving that kind of problem” or “actually, we realized there’s a typo that makes it unsolvable” is FRUSTRATING to say the least. I highly recommend getting yourself added to (or coordinating the creation of) a group chat where people can share these sorts of resources + information, such as by asking anyone with whom you can comfortably make eye contact & who seems friendly enough something like “Hey, do you know if there’s a group chat for this class? If there isn’t, I’d be down help get one started. It seems like that could be useful.” If it’s an upper-level physics course, you will likely be sharing classes with the same group of students over-and-over, so the benefits of communication can carry over to other classes too.
Beyond that, you might also want to work with others on solving homework problems. Idk about all of y’all, but I had this misconception for a long time that people were formally forbidden from working on homework together; however, many profs expect you to work with others so long as you don’t just copy someone else’s solution. Even then, finding people I wanted to work with was pretty hit-or-miss: most people I tried to work with either were receptive to my solutions but didn’t help fill in my own knowledge gaps (so that support wasn’t really going both ways, leaving me feeling drained) or would solve something & immediately give away the answer (which–as a person who learns largely by struggling with material for an extended period of time–spoiled the learning experience for me). Thankfully, even with these specifications for what I wanted in a homework partner, I did find a few like-minded students. Regarding the people with whom I didn’t synergize: when I found myself becoming stressed while working with them, I had to be honest (with them and myself) and convey to them one way or another “This workflow doesn’t align with my own objectives, so I’m going to try something different.”
All of that being said: there were many assignments and projects I did 100% solo, and–although I may’ve obtained a lower grade than if I’d teamed up–the added comfort + control of working alone was worth it. By doing things the way I wanted to do them, I gained experience as my own brand of physicist and further honed what being a physicist meant to me. (Furthermore, for any of you who are worried about your grades: I know many physicists who had low GPA’s and who are successful physicists.) In fact. knowing how to do every aspect of certain calculations to my own standards was actually super beneficial once I became a researcher in high energy theory.
As a researcher: Working with people as a researcher is different than as a student. Instead of being one individual among a class of students all reporting solutions of known problems to a professor, I am now an investigator reporting directly to my research advisor about problems that don’t necessarily have well-defined solutions. My available collaborators are other researchers (students + post-docs + professors) who typically report to the same research group head. Mileage will vary, but you have a significant control over how much you work with people in high-energy theory. My first two publications were done essentially solo, with my advisors just providing paper-writing support. Even now that I’m working on projects with a team, I work from home 95% of the time and essentially only interact with my coworkers in meetings and via e-mail. I’m doing very well for myself with this set-up! Interacting with my advisor consists largely of summarizing my own investigations, and I make a point when collaborating with my coworkers to clearly establish who is doing what to avoid friction between people. If anything, when it comes to working with others at my job nowadays, I’m most stressed about whether or not they’re generating the same quality of work that I am… and I handle that by being straightforward with them, e.g. “I worry that this work is lacking [positive quality X], because [evidence Y]. What do you think?” It’s something that took practice (because I struggle with confrontation and my fight-or-flight response is busted), but I eventually realized that a majority of my coworkers are actively trying to produce good work too (because they’ve also got skin in the game) and thus will support efforts to improve a project’s final quality.
To close: I provide all of the above anecdotal info simply as an N=1 data sample for your own decision-making. The way you and I handle some of the aforementioned obstacles may be different, and that’s totally okay. Returning to your question, my advice is ultimately: Figure out what you want to do, and then communicate to others in a way that ensures you can do physics the way you want to do physics. As in research, there’s often more than one way to solve a problem: if you are uncomfortable working with people in certain regards, there may be a way to use your strengths to avoid having to do that.
Thanks again for the ask! I hope this has helped. I’m wishing you the best, my friends! (EDIT: I reorganized the last paragraph some.)

week ONE - kinda (you’ll see what i mean)
Wowzers. We are really out here. I would content that this is the end of the first week. I got to meet my classmates, take one class, do an assload of reading and meet my first classmate IRL. And I’ve done some thinking about what the hell this program is about. Some of which has been really nice and wholesome, and some of which leaves me with a lot of question marks.
=]
Okay just took a hit from my blunt lets goooo.
It’s 2020 and I’m a college student. My school luckily has been fairly communicative about the “expectations.” So pretty early on in the summer we knew that we were going to be online. That this was going to be a virtual exchanges. Now I’ll admit that I had a fair share of blind optimism of it all going to be “fine” and it all going to “work out great.” Without giving too much thought to what any of that would really feel like or mean. So as people were asking me what it’s like or how I was feeling about it, I found that question complicated because I Was figuring what i wanted my answer to be, but i didn’t know if I was going to like it. (I guess i wanted to like my answer which wasn’t the question. ah well.)
I met with a second year student to buy some books from them (side not buy the 2nd edition of winogradskys book, trust me). They were a little older, did a career pivot and entered the program. The previous career was not related to music at all. They had an internship turned job, a research gig, and managing “a few” artists. ONE YEAR. HALF OF IT IN A PANDEMIC. now i don’t know the steps, pace or how it went down. I just feel compelled to say that a lot happened and as I see this person next I’ll comment that I just am flabbergasted that they accomplished so much. Was the info they got from classes that helpful? Did they have a rich friend? Did the profs turn it out? I have some thoughts.
**so classes did a lot to simulate thought, provide examples, and share information. So for this particular student, they emphasized the extra-circular aspect as what was important. The classes provided them tons of the nuts and bolts. Contracts, parts of the business, publishing, rights mgmt. There were lots of shows. (This is what i see as the kicker) Going to shows is where you could see people participating in their projects. Meet/see their friends who are in their orbit. Get an idea of how the world turns in a few different scenes. Through that, since you’re more or less an adult, you can make those kind of contacts faster. People just generally seem more interested in what you do, and trying to find tethers or connections b/t them and you. Sometimes it turns into a coffee. Or a biz meeting. But at the shows, people are chill. people are down to chat with randos. As a music business student, you can totally market your skills as a manger. You basically see the world of music and the ways it makes money. Great managers want to make money. So as a graduate educating/ed strapping young manager, you have a leg above other young strapping managers. And for the internship, depending on the program, I can actually see lots of companies wanting to keep people around for more than a semester if the work they do is good. It might not be full-time or dream paychecks, but it gets your resume started and due to inertia, you may be able to stick around. it is also, as a side note, helpful in terms of creating a center of gravity.
CENTER OF GRAVITY: When I worked in coffee, after about a year and a half, I had built my center. I worked for a certain company full-time so i spend lots of hours there. People who worked for other companies in the same industry would come through. The ones I was friendly with I would take more care to say hi and hear about how they’re doing. On my days off, I would visit them at their jobs, and even at the later stages, I would be interacting with them On a professional2professional basis. As my company grew and our “scene” grew, as I would be building my week to week schedule all things felt in sync. Going out was an easy thing to arrange, getting people together was simple to arrange because everyone’s life rhymed. All ended work at a certain point. All started basically around the same time. All encountered similar day to day #1 world probz. There were also natural breaks where when i needed to get away to visit a friend or different group, i could break the rhyme and rejoin it almost effortlessly. So in regards to music. Once that rhyme gets established, your work breeds interaction with local people/places/activities/cultural moments/movements etc. Then you take those common understandings to others who work, and your play becomes an extension of your work, but in a meaningful way (you choose who you’re cool with to chill). You figure out what is the “go-to” hangout, you are socialized enough to be comfortable making choices that suit your needs. Not feeling overly worried about what a decision might mean or if it’ll negatively effect you. Life becomes similar. Then as my world felt more established, it even felt easier to meet other people. They saw my life and its patterns and I could glimpse and see theirs.
What is fascinating right now is that I am getting used to a completely different style. I don’t understand it. I don’t know where I fit. I don’t even know if there is a fit right now.
We finally when they hosted orientation for all 30 of us last Monday. The moment where I would meet the next “cohort” of professionals entering the music industry. It was an hour long zoom call with 30+ participants. 30 of us students and four or so faculty/staff members. It was hectic and gnarly to say the least. So many new faces, marred with expectations of what I thought they were going to be like meeting the reality. Lots of working people. I think what is pretty evident is that with the exception of three or so students, of those working in music right now, everyone is loaded with the side hustles. Being a “project manager/marketer/label mgmt/etc. Etc.” To some of those people I’m just amazed that they feel they have enough time to dedicate to full-time school. We did a little ice breaker where we did names, where were calling from, undergrad degree, “fun fact” (I h8 fun facts. Like what the fuck). I didn’t take notes, but I saw the whirl of information, people and backgrounds from all over the place. There were no two similar people. It was actually pretty beautiful. The power that this cohort can have on sheer experience alone is pretty fab.
///
First class was hilarious because we all reintroduced ourselves (kind of for the prof), but in a big way for all of us. We got to see faces, hear names and context. So no hate here. The prof had sent out  three questions to keep in mind. These questions lead me to do additional research outside of the assigned readings. So i had a jumbled pil;e of thoughts assembled and the prof started a question as a line of thinking. Difficult to track where the conversation was going, I saw classmates pipe in, sharing experiences, thoughts, real-world examples. I was just fit to be tied. I had so many thoughts. I didn’t voice a single one because i dind’t know how to use the technology to my advantage. (Next time i’ll use the chat to pipe in an additional thought, but if i have an urgent or concept changing idea i’ll raise my hand.
The debate was 1st amendment protections vs. copyright. Copyright is a limited length monopoly over a creative work. 1st amendment rights guarantees an individual the right to express themselves w/o worry of damnation. But what if what you want to express is a copyrighted material? Well. There are a few things that the law sets up to give temporary lapse to that limited monopoly. Sadly, systematically those lapses in the law, have generally benefited white creators/performers and left behind style-defining black and colored creators. The law not benefitted them as a Jim Crow feeling law. But as a problem with how the law was interpreted and acted on by companies in the scene. How they used the law to make a profit. To give an example. Little Richard is often considered the father of rock and roll. The ways in which he influenced later generations is unparalleled. Set up an industry that is making millions of millions of dollars. Talk about cultural relevance right? You would think someone (or their estate) that has their style and influence in so many places would be sitting pretty. Well. The law only guarantees you to so much. If you were a songwriter, you are compensated for a number of rights. Public performance/mechanicals etc. These rates are set by the government. You can calculate pretty easily where your payout is. But it is ONLY for a few streams.Right now the rates are pretty low, they’ve been set low for a long time.So lets say you are lucky and you are Also the recording artist.well cool! You get another pot of royalty money from the exploitation of your recording which contains your vocal flair, aesthetic energy. It’s great. Those rates are also set, but in a private negotiations. So your rate could be pretty high. Oh you also get lump sums of money against advance so there is cash flow™️. The other advantage is that if you aren’t the songwriter, you can benefit almost seemingly MORE than the writer because you have streams that are attached to you because you offered a “performacne” of it and that is what sticks with audiences. So sadly songs written, stylished and performed by little Richard originally can be re-purposed, re-recorded basically copying and the songwriter is obliged to allow you to do this. In fact publishing companies really can’t give an F. They get additional mechanical royalties but it just *FEELS* wrong. You can copy a Black artists style, voice and dance moves for the profit of your creative pursuit and only compensate them in a monetary way that for the record is *incredibly* low for the sheer amount of value that is being copied?
That’s the delimemma that i want to paint this week. there are a number of these things that just feel wrong, but due to the protections that the law provides, it is perfectly legal and oftentime encouraged by capitalism to do. So the behavior becomes justified and left alone.
So value. Where does it come from? How is it recognized in this moment? Who is it taking from? How are they apart of this chain? Do they know or communicate with who they’re coping? The “recorded-music-part” of the music industries future will have to answer these questions. Is it fair? How could it change? Makes me want to work in rights management to really understand how these decisions are getting maid. So maybe a publisher, that new org that is going to disperse mechanicals really really interests me. So maybe I’ll work for them :)
Alright That’s all for now. Looking to meet more peopleIRL. People have their head in the game. Everyone who I’ve met does have their head in the game, but I can’t wait to meet more. Talk soon.

Tenure can't save you now
So, I saw a few 'I got my teacher fired' posts. Figured I'd post one of my two "I got my teacher fired post" This one is the better of the two as the other one is shorter and I'm not 100% sure I was the one who got them fired.
The first part is backstory, I'll list the final event down below
So this didn't' happen anytime recently. I took a Meteorology class. My professor for this class will just be Prof. Typically, there were things like reading assignments, and then labs in which we worked in groups of 2-4 people. H will be the girl that I usually partnered up with. Sometimes there would be others, but for every project I worked with H. Now, H was very busy and not... very good at this. So I tried my best to help her out, such as I made 'quick bullet study guides' for her on what's relevant to cut out a lot of the bs that wouldn't probably be asked and also did the assignments for her for the most part since I was actually really good at this. She didn't make it like she was expecting me to do it, I was just helping out since she only did the class for the credit.
So, there seemed to be a very big, and very noticeable problem with this class starting off. Prof hated me. Why I don't know. Possibly because he liked to make fun of the stupid kids and I wasn't stupid and it set him off to try making me look stupid? Anyhow, like I said, most of these assignments were done in groups. As such, H's answers to mine were similar nearly to every little word. However, she'd get an A and I'd get F-C's. For simple things like when talking about the heat budget and why we get more in summer vs winter, I used the word 'surface mass' and he wrote off that it was 'surface area' even though the book said surface mass. H's said the same thing, he'd give her full credit. I explain the Lag of the Maximum fully, he'd mark the whole question wrong because of one word change he'd prefer. Again, H never had this marked down. He'd also try making comments to me when I addressed his grading about me being stupid to the whole class. The whole class knew he was just being an ass as I was the only person who knew any of the answers he asked before we were even going over the chapters, so how could I be missing them on the tests?
However, the Professor was old. And a pervert. He'd try to put his hands on all the girls' shoulders and then 'slide forward'. H was a constant target as she was a fairly cute girl. She'd always tuck and try to get away from him while she'd still be sitting but it was getting to her too.
The Final Event.
So, we had a test halfway through the semester. I was averaging a D+/C- despite perfect work that was in no way even an A-. During this test one question was worth somewhere between 10-20% of the total grade. It was to draw and write the 3-cell weather model. I did EVERYTHING 100% perfect on it. He took the entire points off... why? Because the directional arrows I drew for windflow's tails weren't 'long enough'. I even compared to others who got partial or full credit on their test and they didn't' have long sweeping tails. He was just isolating me out. He took points off for the same sort of thing on everything else, but that was just blatantly wrong, no subjective reasoning. Since this was a 4 hour class, I approached him in the little break that we got about the grade. I told him being nice at first that I'd like to discuss what I got wrong (except I knew I wasn't wrong) and he told me he can't be fucked (yes, he swore a lot at me) to deal with my bullshit again and to just go sit down. So, I did, I was already planning to go talk to administration. It wasn't my first rodeo with having to deal with administration over horrible teachers. When the break was over, he came back out and this is pretty much what happened.
Prof: Okay class, I was going to print off some extra credit assignments, but I didn't have time to because Cookiedough is too fucking stupid to get anything right that he had to cry to me in the office to change his grade.
Me: Woah, hold up, I didn't take any longer than 20 seconds of your time and I have the RIGHT to ask what I did wrong. It is then YOUR job to substantiate WHY it was wrong or to fix it which you've neglected to do!
AT this point it became a straight up shouting match between him telling me how inappropriate my behavior is while hurling f bombs at me. I never cursed at him this whole time, but I did yell. At the end of that, he told me to get the fuck out of his classroom and to not come back. Oh, I so did.
I left the classroom, H asked if I was going to finally go and I said yeah, H and another girl that sometimes worked with us on the labs left with me. Turns out, after that whole shouting session and us walking out, everyone else decided to walk out. I only heard from one of them that the Prof was yelling at them as well for standing up and leaving after he said some things about me and the girls. (even typing this story up I'm still shaking from how angry this SoB got me)
We went to the administration, then spoke with the Dean all in the same day. We laid out his behaviors and unfair grading and harassing me, and of course his sexual harassment on H and the other girl. They asked if we're filing a formal complaint against Prof. We all said yes. They made us fill out some forms and then I was asked to speak to the department head regarding my grade . I showed her the test and then other papers of tests and how he'd been grading them. H was there with me to tell her that we had the exact same answers that he just was doing it to me. The Dept head told me to just keep coming to class and when the tests and finals come around she would be the one to grade it.
The aftermath? The next class period, everyone shows up. No teacher shows up. An hour in, we're waiting. Nobody's shown up. One of the Phys Ed teachers comes in with a clip board and is going through it for attendance. Then just says "No class today, dismissed". This happens one more class period where we go in, wait I think it was 10-15 minutes. He comes in and says "no class today, dismissed". Well, I go to the lunchroom early. I meet with one of the administrators. Now, here's the thing and I am pretty sure this is against policy to discuss a teacher's firing, but my god she was chatty with me and one of the lunch ladies (who I usually converse with.)
Admin: You have no idea how grateful we are you submitted a formal complaint! We keep getting complaints about him, but he has tenure, we needed a formal complaint to finally fire him!
Yes, he was FIRED.
Talking with the admin some more, turns out this bastard has done all of... (this was her talking between the lunch lady and I, and apparently this lunch lady KNEW his shit as well)
Told a muslim kid "Don't bring a bomb to class"
Told a young mother "Only stupid people get pregnant"
Told a girl with cancer "only stupid people get cancer, fix your diet"
Told a lot of homophobic shit to some gay students (maybe why he hated me though most people don't know I'm gay unless I tell them. I don't 'act it')
Told a girl wearing a white shirt that it's a shame it wasn't raining in the classroom. (see through. Get the idea)
Told a mentally challenged person to stop acting like a retard (what mental handicap I don't know)
and of course lots of claims of inappropriate touching. But until the other girl, H and I made the formal complaint, they had NOTHING on him due to tenure.
The better part? They couldn't find a teacher to replace him and his times. They couldn't just also CANCEL the classes either, so everyone in the class got a passing grade (Mine was A, I think everyone else got an A too) and we didn't have to go for the second half of the semester.
IF anyone's curious about anything (or the other teacher problems) Let me know. None of them are nearly as...well... fudged up as this one.
