Some morning pages. I’ve been doing much better at getting up early each morning to get my thoughts down. I’m also enjoying the quiet of early morning.

saturday afternoon goodies. i don’t always believe in retail therapy, but a trip to a local bookstore is allowed now and then, as a treat.

Some days, you sit in front of a blank page—planning layouts, careful about your handwriting, making sure your ink colors match and you hem and you haw.
Some days, you pick up a pen and just write.
To me, the latter is always more precious.
Capturing an imperfect snapshot of what’s on my mind at this exact moment—pen and paper style, is more important to me than piling pretty stickers on a page.
In any case, writing is better than not writing.

my first entry written in italian in this journal. i’ve been so lazy with my language learning and im finding it hard to stay motivated to study in the way that i should. by this time next year i would love to be at a true B1 level of speaking and this feels like the path of least resistance when it comes to practice.

The Morning Pages Challenge
You may have heard of morning pages before. It's a type of journaling habit popularised by Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way.
The idea is to finish three pages of raw, stream-of-consciousness writing as the first thing after waking up. These are not meant for publication. There's no goal except for getting three pages done (about 750 words).
Some people write about the characters in the story they're working on. Some reflect on what happened yesterday. Others write about their day ahead, and what they want to accomplish.
As Julia Cameron says, "Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put three pages of anything on the page."
It's a wonderful habit. It takes no more than 30 minutes and sets you up for the day. Writing 750 words forces you to confront what is on your mind as soon as you wake up. Instead of avoiding it, postponing it or distracting yourself with busywork, morning pages create a safe space to reflect on what's important to you.
I've also found that morning pages get your writing brain going. It's not quite the same as working on something you intend to publish, but it's a fantastic warmup routine.
The Challenge
Tumblr media
If you've never tried writing first thing in the morning, this week's challenge is your chance. Try morning pages at least once this week. Write 750 words about anything as soon as you wake up. Don't overthink it.
If you'd like some extra accountability, I set up a challenge in Writing Analytics to track your progress. Here's the link to join:

Happy writing!

Quote
One of the things you learn is that there’s no such thing as ‘having nothing to write’. Some mornings, many mornings, you’re just forcing yourself through the slog of writing. You’re just sitting there describing the sound of a mostly empty house or noting how your elbow has a small ache. And the sheer act of thinking and writing tips you into a felicitous phrase or an observation. It’s like your unconscious is an old storage unit you’ve been forced to explore and you come across something interesting. Or at least something you’ve forgotten about.

Why the Name Notebook Witch?
Because I have a zillion notebooks 😊
One reason I chose "Notebook Witch" is because I hand write in notebooks all the time.
Call me a 2018 basic b*tch, but I still avidly bullet journal using a traveler's notebook with 4+ inserts.
I also write Morning Pages every day. And I write every other line on every other page so I go through notebooks quickly.
I keep a notebook for my political organizing endeavors, for organizing the Boston Poetry Marathon, and one as a grimoire.
I also have a small traveler's notebook with three half size inserts that I use for a separate bullet journal for work.
So! When Dollar Tree came out with a bunch of stitch-bound heavy-feeling paper notebooks and a bunch of whimsical folders and composition notebooks, plus cute 2024 calendars, I added quite a bit to my collection 😬🤷🏼‍♀️📓
I have always been enamored with stationery, from my Sanrio Hello Kitty collecting days as an 80s kid 🐱 I know these will all get used, too.
I also keep a calendar in every room and on every work table I have because it helps me remember appointments. I even keep all appointments in a Google calendar but truly, the only chance I have of retaining everything I have to do and keep track of is to write appointments out digitally AND analog.
Thus, Notebook Witch is my moniker, and notebooks—blank and filled—take up much shelf space in my study 🤓
