K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Jonghyun
Tumblr media
Since this is a very special review, I wanted to start off not with my “credentials” or with a disclaimer but with a story. I’ve been a casual k-pop fan since early 2019 and a deeper fan since March of the year after, when I discovered Red Velvet. In late November of 2020, during lockdown, I lost one of the people I loved most in the world. I was still a teenager (barely younger than Jonghyun was when he debuted in SHINee), and I felt alone and isolated, and I became depressed. And just three weeks later, on December 18th, I was scrolling on social media when I came across posts memorializing Jonghyun. I had heard him mentioned, through Yeri of RV, but had never taken the time to listen, and I finally did.
I saw people mourning, people celebrating, and most of all, people remembering. The k-pop world had just lost two more idols to suicide, Sulli and Hara, and the messages surrounding mental health had never been stronger. It was this that got through to me, like a lightbulb going off, and I went, “Shit, I think I have depression.” And I started taking medication. Now, I’m not going to credit him with saving my life because I have no idea what would’ve happened, but I try to continue what he did for me. But all I can do is what all of us can do, which is remember who he was, respect the art he created, and continue the great advocacy he started. So, in this review, I’m trying to do all three, and I’d love it if you came along with me.
Tumblr media
Crazy (Guilty Pleasure) is first on the list, and immediately had me feeling nostalgic. There’s something about his voice that’s so instantly recognizable, and a song like this that oscillates between his more subdued style and the strong emotions of the chorus fits it so well. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the rap, probably because of the vocalizing behind it, which helped it blend in seamlessly. On the whole, I liked this one! Its strings and immaculate sense of drama reminded me of Taylor Swift’s Don’t Blame Me.
Deja Boo begins with Jonghyun’s classic sound of smooth R & B and his crooning voice. I enjoyed the constant starting and stopping of the instrumental, as it made what could be a boring song far more interesting, and while I’m not usually a fan of rapping or choruses so heavy on vocalizing, I actually liked both here, since they felt like they were there because they fit the song and not because someone thought that they “should” be. The “Okay, next” at the end gave me a good chuckle
It’s a testament to how strong this first EP is that, before this deep dive, I had no idea which of these songs were actually the title track. Beautiful Tonight’s distinctive whistling hook, Hallelujah’s beautiful gospel choir back-up, and Love Belt’s gentle words (and references to a real car accident that Jonghyun was in) all do something unique with what could be such simple R & B melodies, ensuring that the piece feels cohesive but never same-y. My favorite was definitely Neon, though, whose funky catchiness snuck up on me, and I ended up replaying it twice.
Tumblr media
End Of A Day has always been one of my favorite singles of Jonghyun’s, and I’m not alone. There are few songs as heartfelt, and led by only his quiet, comforting voice and a gentle piano, it feels like a warm hug from someone you love. Telling the listener to “lean on my shoulder” and “let me cheer you up”, it features Jonghyun at perhaps his most earnest. I paused what I was doing for a few minutes just to appreciate the peace that this one radiates, and take a deep breath in and out.
The Collection “Story Op.1” is so called because it was written by Jonghyun based on the stories the listeners of his radio show Blue Night confided in him; it’s a very special album for that reason, because it truly feels like a group effort between him and fans. I enjoyed U & I’s sprightly piano, interesting percussion, and cozy guitar, Diphylleia Grayi’s gorgeously sad lyrics and strings, the falling rain sound effects and comfortable energy of 02:34 (which I think was my favorite), and the interpolated phone conversation in Maybe Tomorrow. This is one of my favorite albums of his, and has some of his most excellent imagery.
She Is, despite being super popular, is not a song of his I’ve listened to much. It leans more into funk and is lighter than his other singles (Crazy, End Of Day, Lonely, and Shinin’), being about having a crush. It’s a nice break from the sadder and darker aspects of his discography, and it’s also really catchy. I even liked the sing-talk aspects, though my favorite part was definitely the vocalizing in the post-choruses.
From the She Is album, I liked the “you, you, you” and finger-snapping in White T-Shirt, the ethereal quality of Moon, the layers of falsetto vocalizing in Aurora, the intentional vocal fry and minimalistic background of Cocktail, the sped-up quality of Red, and the vulnerability in Suit Up.
Tumblr media
I admit that when listening to the She Is album, a part of me had forgotten the reason I was doing this review in the first place, but Lonely had me remember immediately. Lonely is, in hindsight, both gut wrenching and haunting, with its lyrics about feeling isolated and alone. It’s a beautiful song, don’t get me wrong—the piano is so lovely and Taeyeon and Jonghyun’s voices work beautifully together, each making the other sound richer—but it’s one of those tracks that you just can’t listen to more than once in a while.
The Collection “Story Op.2” follows where the first collection left off, with more stories inspired by the callers on his radio show. I enjoyed the calm guitar of 1000 and the gentle groove of Just Chill, but Let Me Out has been one of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it. It’s one of the most genuine, gripping, painfully open k-pop ballads I’ve seen, and it never fails to make me want to reach through the screen and say “No.”. Overall, though, this album is definitely a more subdued and peaceful album, although I might be imagining more melancholy with the benefit of hindsight.
Less than eight months after the release of his second collection was, again, December 18th, 2017. It’s a day that’s become so infamous that in the k-pop community just saying “December 18th” will likely get your message across. It gives me no joy to say that he had a plan; his last album, Poet | Artist was released just a month after he left the world; a final gift to the fans who had watched him grow up for both so long and not nearly long enough.
Tumblr media
Shinin’ is the single from the album, and uses a glowing, minimalistic electronic synth background that expands with some percussion in its choruses. Jonghyun’s voice is at some of its smoothest here. It’s one of those songs that’s happy and sad at the same time, and its happiness feels…muted? It’s hard not to be emotional when the song ends with “always be with you, you, you.” Without the story behind it, it’s a simple love song. With it, it’s a promise that he’s managed to keep for the last six years. I do admit that I got a good laugh out of the super 80’s animation, though.
Before Our Spring wasn’t intended to be a single, but after his passing, SM Entertainment decided to make it a tribute video for him. It follows in the footsteps of End Of Day, as it’s a peaceful, piano-led ballad, but undeniably heartbreaking: “Before spring comes, before the sun rises, I’ll meet you when everyone is asleep. I’m okay, don’t worry, spring will come to me too.” I hope it does. Depending on the day, sometimes I listen to it and feel comforted, and sometimes I listen to it and just feel heartbroken. Thankfully, watching it with the video made it just a little easier. It’s good to hear him laugh.
Poet | Artist is Jonghyun’s last, posthumous album, and is one of his strongest. I loved the disco-y synths of Only One You Need, the tongue-in-cheek humor of #Hashtag, the chorus’ explosion in Grease, the ethereal encouragement in Take The Dive, the brighter and funkier delivery of Sightseeing, and the quietly anthemic quality of Just For A Day.
Tumblr media
My top 5 songs from Jonghyun are End Of Day, Only One You Need, Take The Dive, Hallelujah, and U & I, with Neon and Let Me Out as honorable mentions. Jonghyun’s work gets a 9.25 out of 10 from me, which is probably about as surprising as TWICE announcing a comeback. In all seriousness though, I know that I’m super biased, but hey, we started with a sob story and that’s how we’re going to end.
I can’t really put into words the feelings I have about this review. Writing it has reminded me how grateful I am, not only that I found Jonghyun and his story, not only that I became a Shawol, but that I became a k-pop fan in general. As Jonghyun wrote in his book (which I haven’t been able to find a full English translation of yet, but I’m still trying), “Even though we can’t communicate using the same language, we use music instead.”
Jonghyun broke boundaries in k-pop, with his openness, his self-producing, his prolific writing, and his advocacy. Both our community and the world as a whole was very lucky to have him for as long as we did, which still wasn’t nearly long enough. He changed the lives of so many people—he changed mine, without me even knowing who he was at the time he passed away—and overall, he made the world just a little easier for everybody else, no matter how hard it was for himself. All this is to say, he did very, very well.
Tumblr media
I’ll be taking a break next week because it’s the holidays, so I’ll see you again in the new year for a girl group, folks. Thank you so much for reading, and please, take care. Tschüss, und Fröhliche Weihnachten (Happy Holidays)!

It’s that time again. It’s Tumblr’s 2022 Year in Review!
Every year, the team behind Fandometrics analyzes, categorizes, and ranks all the most discussed things on Tumblr—that’s a year’s worth of your tags, searches, posts, likes, and reblogs—and packages them up into a little thing we like to call Year in Review.
Tumblr’s Year in Review contains a full 365 days’ worth of data, but it runs from October 21, 2021, to October 20, 2022. Tragically, this means Goncharov (1973), the greatest mafia movie ever made, will not appear on the lists this year. We’re just as disappointed as you are, but that gives us all something to look forward to in 2023—especially if @vancityreynolds’ remake gets a release date.
This Year in Review has all your classics like Movies, Web Series, and Anime & Manga. It's also got last year’s new lists (because, frankly, what would a Year in Review in 2022 be without Genshin Impact Characters and Minecraft Streamers?). And we’ve added some new lists for you this year, too—a brand new Formula 1 list and a few special editorial deep dives.
Stay tuned this month. There may be a few surprises along the way. Maybe even an exciting launch next week. Who knows! We certainly don’t! Not a clue. For now, here's Tumblr’s Year in Review for you to dig into.

Kpop Exposé Reading
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⚠️DISCLAIMER! TAROT CARDS ARE NOT 100% ACCURATE! TAKE EVERYTHING WITH A GRAIN OF SALT! IF MY INTERPRETATIONS ARE INCORRECT FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME!⚠️
Tumblr media
There have been some posts going around about how kpop could possibly lose its fame a few years down the line due to music quality and possible scandals taking place. So… I wanted to do a quick deep dive as to what could possibly be exposed in the Kpop industry.
‼️PLEASE TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT! I BEGGG!‼️
Tumblr media
What will be getting exposed? : QoS, The Magician rx, 9oS rx, 4oP, AoW rx, 8oP rx, The Emperor rx, 8oW rx, 10oW, PoP, 9oW, AoS, KoC, KNoC, 2oS rx, The Chariot, KoW
Idols will come out and expose the industry for its constant overworking of the idols. Some contestants from group shows and possible ghostwriters, singers and rappers will come out and talk about how they were not given the opportunity to establish their career because of their looks and rigged group shows.
Idols will come out and talk about the mental illnesses they’ve gained during their idol years, and how the company did not care. They would be pleading for a break but they weren’t given one. They’ll talk about their greedy ceos and industry people who only care about money and will constantly overwork idols while they don’t have to lift a single finger.
Idols will talk about how much they hated being an idol… all of the “luxuries”, brand sponsors, stage outfits, m/v’s and etc meant nothing to them. Other than trauma and exhaustion. The idols will talk about how fed up they are with having to act all innocent and well behaved in order to avoid negative reputations. They’ll talk about the overworking and underpayment. As well as exposing the disharmony within their groups too.
Idols will come out and expose either a ceo/manager/staff member and even their own members of being bullies. They’ll talk about the abuse and tormenting they faced thanks to that bully under their companies. Idols will talk about being tricked into overworking by the company and being told if they work hard they’ll be successful… which is true but that led to the company taking majority of the income from the idols work.
This whole expose will be making its rounds all over social media, but there will be one male figure in particular who will avoid this whole fiasco.
Overall, the idols who decided to expose the industry will be feeling really victorious and are happy to finally expose. They got tired of hiding, being forced to keep quiet, hiding secrets no… they just want to be free. This will also allow them to escape the K-pop industry for good.
Who will be exposing the Kpop industry? : KNoW, 7oP rx, The Star, KoC
An extroverted idol or just an idol who is like genuinely fed up will start exposing. Nugu idols/ idols with stagnant careers will also begin exposing. A really well known idol/songwriter will also expose the industry.
Possible Astrological Signs?! : PoS, KoW & 3oC
Idols with Earth placements, Fire placements and Mercury in Cancer
(Card placements are like a domino effect. One courages idol will start exposing, then a 2nd idol/figure who’s known will participate and then there will be an influx of emotionally drained and fed up idols exposing everything and everyone.)
Aftermath : 7oP, 7oW rx, KNoS rx, 4oS rx
The industry could take a while to get back up on its feet, but they will really push to regain its image again. They’ll be unable to try coverup and defend people anymore. The industry will definitely be judged and looked down upon. They’ll try debut more groups and some industry people will come out and talk but they should be careful as they’re words will be used against them. They will get back on their feet… but it could be a really slow process.
General publics thoughts: 4oW, 2oP, Hanged man rx, The Magician, 9oS, QoS, KoC rx
People will be happy?!😭 I think other music industries could start establishing their own things thanks to kpop going into shambles. Some could also not really care tbh… and people will try divert the attention from the exposé? There will be a lot of talk on social media, and more artists could be glad that their creativity will be shown? Some people will be heartbroken, they could just be in utter shock tbh. People will be happy that ppl are getting exposed now. Overall, just a lot of talk on social media, different sides and opinions as per usual…
Kpop stans thoughts : KNoC rx, 3oS rx, KoW rx, QoP, Death & AoP
They will think idols are lying and are jealous of their faves. They will not believe any of the news coming out and will attack the idols still and say they fake. Some kpop stans will definitely be leaving the fandom, and never come back. It will just be a mess tbh, a lot of death threats and doxxing will happen. People will definitely defend and some will applaud the idols who exposed to industry.
Woke Kpop stans will possibly leave this whole kpop industry and this will also lead to the declining finances in the industry.
i hope we will all be prepared for when this day comes because it’s going to be one longgggg bumpy ride 😵‍💫
Thank you for reading 📦

hay what do you think of 8h stellium in a composite chart??
If this relationship ends, you will probably never be the same. You two are transformed into two unrecognizable people as a result of the lessons you learn from one another. Your shadow sides can deeply resonate with one another. You two get a lot out of your private time with one another. You can just sense what the other person needs and wants on a primal level. You never want anything to happen to them. They are your most prized possession, one that no amount of money can buy. I feel like there is a higher chance of codependency with this set-up. You two might feel like a shell of a person when you’re without the other. You two have an immediate agreement that this relationship is not to be taken lightly. “We either merge completely or you leave me alone.” You two might have your finances become completely entangled if you don’t monitor this enough. You can become addicted to one another’s energy. You want to possess them mind, body, and soul. If there were more than just mind, body, and soul, you’ll want to possess that too. You guys will never hesitate to share with one another. “What is mine is always yours.” You two construct your own void to escape in to, a cave that can only be roamed by one another. The sex here can be transformative and bring about changes in your perception of pleasure. You guys might dabble in kinks you once were hesitant to explore with others. Once you two can fully give yourselves to one another sexually and let loose, the sex can be extremely vulnerable and beautiful. You will find it difficult to leave one another even when issues pop their head in. If toxicity begins to control the reigns of your relationship, get ready for the uncontrollable tears, screaming, destruction, and exposure of all your ugly sides. You will shoot to k*ll. Saying the most horrendous things to one another, getting into their psyche, and then still feeling like you are unable to leave despite your resentment and disgust can be a possibility with too much 8H influence playing out in a dynamic. Breaking up feels like you can be preparing to mourn a real death. Just know that you can take the lessons you’ve learned and take on a fresh, healthier approach to life once you’ve moved on. Do not encourage toxicity in anyway because it can get out of hand and it won’t be “cute” or “sexy.” Your safety and wellbeing matters, and you do not need to compromise it to keep anyone around. On a more positive note, I feel like you two can share a lot of interests or have parts of yourselves you only feel comfortable revealing to the other. I feel like you can confide in one another and share secrets you don’t feel like you can tell others. This is another match that wouldn’t be phased by period sex. I feel like 8H relationships can be apt to get each others names tattooed. When you two are not together, I think you can easily find things to remind you of your partner. “I look for you in everything.” You two can really get each other the most wonderful sentimental gifts. I feel like people underestimate how great Scorpionic energy can be when it comes to giving gifts. They know what screams “you,” because they’ve made the time and effort to psychoanalyze you. You want to know what makes the other “tick.” You are keenly aware of any shift in the other persons mood, and want to right it immediately. You can dive deep into each others brains and work passed any trauma you may have. You two can experience infinite deaths and rebirths by being together. This couple could feel like their partner is the only one who truly “sees” them and understands them on a deep level. “You are the light at the end of this dark tunnel.” If the other one hurts you or acts out of malice, this will feel like they legitimately tore your heart out of your chest. Any sort of betrayal is extra hurtful, and can lead to irreconcilable differences. “I’ll never forget what you did to me, even if I’ve forgiven you.” I feel like these two can become more antisocial once they are together.
“I’d live off the grid with you.” (Funny enough, I wrote this sentence in January of 2024; in March of 2024, i reconnected with someone I have an 8H composite stellium with, and within the first day of reconnecting he made this joke to me lol)

There she stood laughing with Soap. Her laugh was so contagious even for the Austrian Soldier. He watched her at a distance. The way she danced, the way she laughed and twirl around. The sounds of the skates she wore rolling on the concrete.
Earlier Soap surprised her with a pair of roller skates. She was so excited and giddy to put them on.
König wanted to so badly walk over to watch her closer and maybe talk with her. But the way she smiled and laughed made his heart beat faster.
The dirty thoughts that arose in his head became more and more elicit. The way she gasped when she stopped and from when she bumped into Ghost as he walked by.
Her little gasp made König face red, so red he was so thankful for his hood. The way his cock twitched and leaked with precum. The way she blushed at Ghost was enough to put him over edge.
König wanted to pick her up and throw her over his shoulder and take her away to his room. To worship her every way possible.
To kiss between her thighs, while slowly making his way to her soaked sopping pussy.
Feeling her soaked pussy with his thick calloused fingers. Ever so slowly swiping her folds while watching her reaction. Teasingly pushing his index and middle finger in her while she squirms under his grasp. Listening to her pleas and moans.
“K König please?” “I c can’t with the t teasing”
While knuckle deep in her, he started to curl his fingers watching her gasp and bite her bottom lip. The sounds of wet soft squelching noise made his cock quiver with anticipation. He wanted to place her on his cock to bounce her up and down to his own pace. But he had to get her wet enough.
“I’m not done yet Schatzchen”
Lifting his hood pulling her thighs apart. Looking like a starving man he takes one look to her before diving into her soaked sopping pussy. Twirling his tongue around on her clit, sucking and slipping his tongue into her. Tasting her is like pure euphoria. The way she tastes is like ambrosia sucking her clit and swallowing is pure nectar.
Cupping her soft supple breast pinching her nipples. Listening to her gasp and moan as he massages her breast.
Pulling away from her pussy with a *pop* from sucking her overstimulated clit.
Lifting his hood he sucks on her breast leaving a trail love bites as he gently bites her harden nipple.
Licking her nipple slowing making his way down to the valley of her breast. He pauses taking in the taste of her in. Relishing in the moment. Closing his eyes memorizing her taste the way she felt on his tongue.
Saliva dripping from his mouth he licks it all back up, making his way up to her neck. The way she smells is so intoxicating. Her perfume, her sweat mixed together is so intoxicating.
“Oh schatz you have no idea the things you do to me.”

𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑬 𝑩𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑲
𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒐 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒐 𝒙 𝑭𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒆!𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓
Warning : 18+, Minors DNI, smut, vaginal sex, blabla as usual you know by now, angst with comfort.
Word count : 3,9 K
Just, was listening to some sad songs and this baby boy popped in my mind, it's safe to say that it's pure shit because I wrote it on impulse.
And when in the middle of the night, the doorbell rang, you'd just know it's him, always him.
You'd open the door, greet him with frantic heart beats and the warmth of a smile, of a home.
Sometimes there would be no words, none were needed. The absence of his smile was loud enough, his dark circles dark enough to let him in the comfort of your house, to that living room he knew like the back of his hand.
-" You can smoke if you want to, I'll go make some coffee" you went to turn around, if not for his hand to wrap around your wrist, the next thing you knew you were sitting on the couch, well, on his lap.
-" Please, jus'... Just a minute, let's stay like this for just a minute. "
You knew those goosebumps all over your skin, when he nuzzled his head in the crook of your neck. You knew that tone his voice took only after exhausting days, and you knew you'd fall in again.
Because you knew Sano Shinichiro, your best friend before you even knew what those words meant. Few could claim to do what you could, to see the truth of the wars he was hiding behind those dark eyes of him.
You adjusted yourself better on his lap, your hands began rubbing his back, chin on his head.
Your heart beats humming a rockabye to his ears, some nights your scent seemed like the only anchor. Strange indeed, because it was in your arms that he often let it all go, the weight he carried on those broad shoulders, your hands on his back took it away for a little while.
A break in time.
And he'd look up, catch your worried eyes on him, you'd put your most beautiful makeup, a smile that could have been convincing.
If he wasn't Shinichiro.
-" And I make you worry. Again. " a dark chuckle leaving his mouth, as seldom as Shinichiro was to that bitterness, those dark nights of him were not.
-" What an asshole I am... "
-" Hey ! " as his hands found your waist, trying to gently push you off his lap, yours cupped his cheeks, lifting his head and diving in his deep dark hues.
-" No matter what you do, I'll always worry about you, that's what friends do. "
Right, friends.
Since friends held each other that way, and looked each other that way, then you were friends.
He often wondered, what if's keeping him up at night. What if he has been good enough ? Found it in him to speak loud enough, then he'll figure out how useless it was.
Because he will never be enough. Not for you, not for his family, nor for anyone else.
-" Shin, I can't pretend to know how you feel. " You added, once making sure he was with you. " But know that I'm here, always and forever. "
In your eyes he could read no more than a solemn oath, hands cupping his face tight as if like water, he could slip between your fingers.
-" It's just... "
In vain, it was the well-known end for this everytime. How was he even supposed to tell you this ? You would run away, telling him how much of a mad crazy man he was. That was the reason why those late night visits would never end up with confessions, because how the hell was he supposed to explain...
-" No matter how hard I try, it's never... I'm never Enough ".
Spectator of his own nightmare, watching the castles crumble.
-" For Manjiro, for Emma, for the gang... And you".
At his early twenties, Shinichiro Sano, the weak king had the strongest shoulders. They carried the weight of a family, of a hundred men who chose to entrust him, and whenever the burden gets too heavy, there's only one place he'd lean on.
-" and all I want is-"
Crestfallen, he'd hide his face in your neck but you'd feel the wetness against your skin, your heart broke the same way his voice did.
-" for everyone to be fine " he sobbed in your neck, needless to say he loathed himself and his cry baby tendencies at that moment, yet you started rubbing his back with one hand while running your fingers in his hair with the other, and for the first time in his life he felt... At ease with crying.
-" Shhh, it's okay, it's gonna be alright. "
His breath hitched, as you placed a kiss on his temple. Tender was that gesture, stealing a heart beat from him as he held onto you like a lifeline.
-" You don't get yourself a whole gang to follow you when you're not enough, Shin. " You gently whispered, laying your chin on top of his head, and before he objected, you added.
-" You don't raise two great kids on your own when you yourself was supposed to be one, if you're not enough. "
-" You don't have any idea what I-"
How could he say it... ? You would never understand.
-" Maybe I don't. " You pulled your face away, looking him dead in the eyes, making him shiver. " I have no idea about the darkest roads you're going down. But, I know I'd follow up their way no matter how far. "
And in yours arms he found solace, when he'd grew tired of running.
-" I don't care if you think you're not enough. Because there's nothing than I won't come through to get to you. "
And when it's hard to make the ends meet, you'll just meet him in the middle.
-" even if I have to die for you. "
And just like that, you swept him off his feet. Your words could be the trigger, the gun nevertheless was your eyes, how they shone with nothing but honesty. Devotion.
Love.
-" You say things... " He grunt, rubbing his face with one hand while the other arm rested around your waist. You smiled, the shiniest thing he'd probably ever get in his life.
-" things ?" You tilted your head to the side, taking his breath away from him.
Do or die, he should really let go. After years of playing the blind and the fool, pacing between the friendship and the more, he gathered himself and all his pieces, heart beating too fast.
-" Things... That makes me want to say fuck friends. Things that makes me want to kiss you. "
And though he whispered the last part, dark eyes swallowing yours, your body inside was none but celebration, beats and lights flickering. Your cheeks heated, never before have you two talked about what was going in between the said-friendship, though both were oblivious idiots in love.
-" Anyway" you chuckled, hiding away the embrassement while his cheeks were turning red. " You don't have to tell me what's wrong, and my shoulders might be small but my pretty black dragon king can cry on them though."
He swallowed hardly, upon hearing that word for the first time. Turning him into a stuttering blushing mess was your own art after all.
-" I'm not pretty " he mumbled, shying away from you, before looking back at your face after hearing your light chuckle.
-" You are. My weak, pretty king".
Though huffing, his arms tightened around your waist as he brought his head back in your neck. It was not the first nor the last time he'd wander the darkest alleys of his mind, neither was it the first or the last time your touch was to bring him home, or to bring home to him.
You held him together, secure, safe, where the outside worries would not get to him, only for a night, for an embrace.
Then the thoughts started getting to you, biting your lower lip you played his words again, fuck friends. You stared at him, lidded eyes in the void while his fingers were rubbing circles on your skin. On the verge of losing him again to the demons in his head, you took his face back in your hands and with a hesitant smile you whispered.
-" Let me make you feel better".
Confused, his hands stopped their movements as you dropped on your knees in front of him. The lewdest of the ideas began creeping in his mind, wide eyed gaze bored into you with an already growing heat in him, while he whispered your name.
-" Wh- I mean, what're you up to ?"
Your hands quickly found his belt, starting to unbuckle it restraining your smile by beating your lips, the sight alone was enough for his hard on to show up as you slided his pants down slightly.
-" Do you trust me, Shin ?"
Trust, an unspoken word, obvious rule between the two of you.
-" 'f course. " He nodded, trying to calm down his erratic heart beats, in vain since the next minute, the soft palm of your hand was gently welcoming his length.
Shinichiro fisted the couch, fire burning in his bones, your thumb smeared the precum over his rather impressive length.
-" You have the prettiest cock, Shin " the groan he left was the most pathetic to him, the sweetest to you, so much that you began leaving open mouthed kisses on his tip, ones that ended up with almost his entire shaft in your throat.
-" Oh! F-fuck " his hands hesitantly found your hair, holding on the slightest hint of reality. You bobbed your head up and down, hollowing your cheeks which resulted in him buckling his hips against your face, whispering your name in a broken whisper.
-" Just that way, damn, such a... Such a good fucking girl".
Climbing his high, he didn't knew where that confidence came from but considering how you whimpered around him- vibrations nearly sending him to the edge- you seemed to like it.
With each look those eyes of yours-which so long haunted his wildest dreams - gave him, pleasure's walls were tightening around him. He couldn't even resist the urge to thrust in your throat anymore, contemplating the tears running down your cheeks in the most breathtaking sights. You noticed, how wouldn't you, the way his eyes trailed down your sleep crop top, and smiled around his length.
-" What's-" his eyes widened, your hand guided his to your chest closing it around your breast, safe to say he moaned at the same time you did.
-" So, so fuckin' soft" he kept squeezing your mound, pinching your nipple from time to time, each moan of you around him a melody to his ears and a shiver to his core.
After so many years of unspoken truths, clumsy touches and buried feelings, touching you this way was supposed not to be more than a wet dream, a late night fantasy. The meer thought, along with your smooth skin when he slided his hand to cup your breast under your shirt was enough to send him to overdrive, thick white ropes running down your throat, his other hand tightened around your hair.
-" Shit, pretty girl ! " Throwing his head back, he thrusted through his orgasm into your mouth, eyes closed while your hands squeezed his balls dry. " Goddamn..."
A wet pop could be heard next, as you pulled away from him with a small smile, waiting for the euphoric sensation he was feeling to calm down. And when he finally started coming down, core still trembling, he peered at you and in his gaze flickered all the world's adoration.
Just you-the one he always worshipped the ground you walked on- on your knees for him. Some of his release on the corner of your glossy lips, wet lashes and bright eyes staring at him as if you were not conscious about being the prettiest thing to ever graze his eyes.
-" Won't you keep all of me ?" He asked, thumb wiping his cum from the corner of your mouth and brushing against your lips. Never leaving his gaze, you swallowed the whole thumb, swirling your tongue around the finger and pulling a grunt from him.
-" that was... Wow, I mean, you did so good t'me-" he started, while you stood up from between his legs. His eyes twitched, hands coming to fist the poor couch again seeing you removing your tank top in a swift gesture, your sleep shorts next, countless were the times he slept with the thought of your bare body, but not even his wildest dreams have made you this breathtaking.
You easily sat back on his lap, as if he hasn't been building up all along, years where that body of yours he sought. Picture perfect, made his heart burn and slowly simmering with desire. Ever so shyly, his hands circled your waist, pupils darker than a moonless night.
-" Too good for me, you're a damn masterpiece... "
You yelped, hands reaching his hair the second his hands started playing with your breasts again, and in no time, his lips were on yours.
Shyly first, how long had he dreamed to kiss those lips. The taste was nothing short of fantasy, sweet, addictive, pulling him back everytime you tried separating for some air.
-" Sh-Shin !" You moaned softly, grinding down on his naked erection because of his hand pinching your nipple, while the other reached for your clit between your two bodies.
-" This right, m'love. You make me feel so good, lemme do the same for my pretty girl."
If someone told you, days ago you'd be naked in your best friend's arms, riding his fingers while he whispered sweet praises in your ears, you would've probably laughed.
Still there you were some minutes after, cumming on those fingers which held yours for years, getting him hard once again by the unique sight of you on top of him, fucked up expression and eyes rolled back.
He would've laughed too, if someone told him days ago that the one who introduced love to him would be within his reaches.
Yet there he was, sliding slowly inside you, sinking you by the hips lower onto him.
-" You're so tight... Y'feel so good ".
You tried hiding your head in his neck, only for him to cup your cheeks, bringing your face back in front of him.
-" You don't get to hide such a pretty face from me, 'Kay ?"
-" Shi-" he cut your pathetic attempt of speaking by thrusting for the first time inside you, grunting along with your moan. You helped yourself with your hands on his shoulders, while his held your hips and his lips were back on yours in no time.
-" gonna love you so, so good " he mumbled, and maybe if you have been a little more focused, would you have gotten the non-sexual meaning to his sentence. But with every edge of him hitting the right spots inside you, all you could do was moaning his name in broken sobs, which itself wasn't bad since his name rolling of your tongue was symphony to his ears.
Now sure there were still hidden monsters in his mind you knew nothing about, but in your embrace, they all got tamed.
Past, future, different futures melted into nothing between your warm walls hugging him. His sore shoulders put down the burden, and his restless soul came back home.
One night, between his travels and journeys no one knew about. A time break, and a bed for his tired heart to rest in the cocoon of your touch.
-" I'm close, Shin. Don't- oh fuck, don't stop, please! "
His lips found yours, tasting you again.
Solace.
-" let's cum together, Love. Give me your all, and take all of me ".
So here it is, just a short thing I needed to write considering the new chapter, gosh I love him even more than before...

Watching original content...
Some of the bloggers that I follow here talk about how important it is to watch original content. It seems to be an obvious thing to do, yet many never go quite that far. Especially some of the fringe people who are hyper-focused upon a single member or a particular relationship within Bangtan.
All I can say is that it does matter, whether one sees original content, or not. When a person relies only on compilations, videos that are created with a particular "focus" (relationship or idol), analysis videos, and content that has incorrect translations or interpretations, then the person is going to have a very distorted view of things.
I know as I've been there..... not realizing what I was viewing as a pre-baby ARMY. (I didn't even know what it meant to be "ARMY".) That YouTube algorythym that can take a person down rabbit holes that have never been explored, you know. Yeah. So I watched a ton of videos on all sorts of things related to BTS, before I was on this platform, and before I really had a grasp on what any of it meant.
Thankfully, one of those YT channels recommended Dalloga's blog here on Tumblr, as she is known for her translations and clarifications on Korean language and culture. I managed to find her blog, not having any clue what Tumblr was. lol It took me over a year get the nerve to create my account, and then another year before I started to follow people and post.
So yeah....As an English-speaking woman living in the States, I had a HUGE learning curve to navigate, and much of it had to do with understanding the culture around BTS. I had to learn what a "bias" was, what "shipping" meant, what the heck those combined names meant 😆 (Jikook, Taekook, Jinkook, etc., etc.), and none of it really made sense to me. Here in the US, we don't have anything quite like the culture around K-Pop. Even now, I don't get the total attachment to labels in the fandom.
So what is the point to these words?
I am finally making my way through some original content that I have never watched before. Yay for me! 🎉
Tumblr media
Having watched BV season 1 last week, I just finished season 2 of Bon Voyage last night, and OMG. To watch from beginning to end, to see everthing as it was and not chopped up and edited to fit a storyline someone has created, has been so awesome. It's been even more eye-opening given where we currently are in the BTS timeline (everyone in the military).
And, I see dynamics and moments in their original context which helps to clarify my understanding of things. Yeah. Clarity and understanding... always a good thing.
I understand how some have mis-interpreted certain things.
I'm going to navigate away from making big statements here, that would lead down some rabbit holes that I'd rather not explore. There are plenty here on this platform who have done it already, and it's not my forte. I'll just say that it is always a good choice to look at original content, and just let it be what it is. The reminder here is that they never show everything. What we see is but a glimpse....
Tumblr media
These months that we have on-hand are a prime time to take the deep dive into original content. Perhaps it is a re-visit for some folks.
I'm going to do my homework, and learn what I can, via tons of episodes of BV, RUN BTS, and anything else I can put my hands on. It's going to be a fun journey! 💜💜💜

Tomorrow X Together Refuse To Play It Safe Musically: ‘We Don’t Want To Limit Ourselves’
Tumblr media
After Tomorrow X Together’s scored a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in February with The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION, the K-pop trailblazers could have been tempted to recreate a collection of similarly whimsical pop cuts. But the quintet opted to push forward with their story by fusing in new genres and collaborators for a goal greater than commercial success.
TXT’s latest musical journey, The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, showcases an unwavering commitment to pushing musical boundaries. From serving one of the best choruses of their careers with a side of ‘80s new wave in the lead single “Chasing That Feeling” to dabbling in everything from metal to Latin pop thanks to mixing new and longtime collaborators, FREEFALL ultimately speaks to their group goal of abandoning traditional genre labels altogether.
“We tried to experiment with new sounds and styles on this album,” says Tomorrow X Together vocalist Taehyun, who co-wrote three of the album’s nine tracks. “We don’t want to limit ourselves to one genre and [want to] continue to experiment with a variety of sounds. At the same time, we want to put our own spin on them so that ‘Tomorrow X Together’ can ultimately be a genre of its own.”
Subverting expectations and refusing to limit oneself is not just a sign of courage in an unpredictable music industry, but artistic confidence that one’s messages and story can continue with the fans and listeners willing to open their ears and minds, with Taehyun, Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu and Hueningkai living that motto in their music. Dive into more with the members of Tomorrow X Together for insights into their creative process, album’s themes and aspirations for the future.
TAEHYUN: We tried to experiment with new sounds and styles on this album as well. There’s 1980s-inspired new wave track “Chasing That Feeling,” hard rock-driven “Growing Pain,” and “Deep Down” which has a Jersey Club sound. We don’t want to limit ourselves to one genre and [want to] continue to experiment with a variety of sounds. At the same time, we want to put our own spin on them so that “TOMORROW X TOGETHER” can ultimately be a genre of its own.
Jeff Benjamin: You mentioned “Chasing That Feeling” has the '80s new-wave sound. What made it the proper title track and how did you approach blending in your sound?
YEONJUN: “Chasing That Feeling” is a song that marks a new beginning in reality and an important turning point in the Name Chapter series. It sings of a fresh start away from the sweet but irresponsible past which our previous album The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION dealt with. So it felt right as the lead single for the new album.
HUENINGKAI: I think the retro, new-wave sound of the track works well because it captures a youthful and resilient energy. It’s a youth anthem, but not like the romantic youth anthems people might expect, and lays out the pain and emptiness of reality which I think a lot of people will find relatable.
Jeff Benjamin: The choreography for “Chasing That Feeling” features voguing, which is rare for boy bands. Can you tell us the thinking behind it and how it complements the song?
BEOMGYU: We wanted the choreography to reflect the message of the song. A lot of the movements were designed to visually convey this sense of speed and a feeling of freefalling. We like to experiment and try something different for our performances, so voguing was a new but fun experience. It resulted in a very dynamic performance that I think our fans will enjoy very much.
Jeff Benjamin: Going through some album songs, “Growing Pain” opens and stands out with its hard rock, almost metal sound. Can you share the story behind this track?
HUENINGKAI: “Growing Pain” is about facing reality head-on and feeling that sense of pain in the process. But rather than looking at this pain as an end, the song embraces this as growing pains and a process to mature in the end. I really liked this perspective of looking at reality and tried to reflect that in the lyrics.
Jeff Benjamin: The lyrics and message in “Deep Down” are very intriguing about seeing one’s horns as a crown. Is there a connection between it and your debut single “Crown”?
YEONJUN: There’s definitely a connection. “Deep Down” is about accepting one’s “horn,” something you want to keep hidden, as one’s “crown,” something that makes you who you are. “Crown” is about the discovery of what makes you different and “Deep Down” embraces that difference as a part of one’s true self. So, it’s like a full circle moment, and I think it’s natural that there’s this evolution in the narrative because we have evolved and wanted to share that journey through our music.
Jeff Benjamin: MAX co-wrote “Happily Ever After.” Are you fans of him or have you managed to start a friendship?
HUENINGKAI: He's one of my favorite artists, and I was genuinely thrilled when I heard the news that he would be taking part in the track. I was also pleasantly surprised when we received the demo because he sang it himself.
Jeff Benjamin: The color blue appears in several TXT song titles: “Blue Hour,” “Blue Orangeade” and, now, “Blue Spring.” What is the significance of the color and connection with your fans, MOA?
HUENINGKAI: The color blue has a part in the cohesive story we’re trying to tell through our music. Therefore, certain imagery reappears and evolves along with the theme of our albums. It also plays a role in further immersing our fans into the story we’re telling.
Jeff Benjamin: The visuals for the album range from dark and to fantastical, how do they fit into the overall album theme or sounds even?
SOOBIN: Since we wanted to talk about reality as we see it in this album, the album’s visuals also reflect this. We intended to recreate the look of the real world as it is to give off this sense of reality seen without a filter. And in this reality, there are moments of both pain and beauty, so you can see that reflected in the melancholy and fantasy-like imagery.
Jeff Benjamin: You worked with Ryan Tedder for two songs “Do It Like That” and “Back for More” on this album. What was the experience like and how did he contribute to your established creative process?
TAEHYUN: We had a chance to meet and work with Ryan in Los Angeles during the U.S. leg of our most recent world tour. He took the time out of his vacation to come to the studio to direct our recording sessions. His dedication and level of professionalism throughout the entire process really inspired me. He’s an incredible musician, and it was such a pleasure working with him.
Jeff Benjamin: The album has a message about “freefalling” into reality. Have there been times when you unexpectedly or suddenly had to face reality head on?
YEONJUN: I’d say the journey of becoming an artist was an experience where I faced reality head on. The path to becoming an artist, and a great artist at that, requires a great deal of hard work and responsibility along with growing pains. Through it all, I feel that I’ve become a better artist by enduring those times.
Jeff Benjamin: The series of “Dreamers,” “Deep Down,” “Happily Ever After” and “Skipping Stones” is strong; I think fans will find inspiration in their messages of identity, hope, and courage. Are there personal sentiments here any of you can relate to?
TAEHYUN: In "Dreamer," there are lyrics that say, “I'm a dreamer, dreamer, dreamer with memories of stars.” I love the sense of resilience in these lyrics because it’s about choosing to embrace adulthood without abandoning the capacity to dream, rather than giving up on hopes and dreams as an adult in the real world. That’s something that I very much aspire to do.
HUENINGKAI: “Skipping Stones” is another great track that I relate to. It’s about staying strong in the face of adversity. The song compares one’s inner turmoil to the fluctuating water surface from skipping stones. One’s inner turmoil creates this wave of unsettling emotions, but just like skipping stones, the water eventually becomes still—I love the lyrical imagery on top of the track’s raw sound.
Jeff Benjamin: Do you have any specific hopes or goals for this album on the charts?
BEOMGYU: We received so much love on our previous album, and it’d be amazing to continue to garner great results on the charts. Regardless, I’m still very proud of how far we were able to expand our sound once again and artistically grow through this album.
Jeff Benjamin: Now that The Name Chapter: FREEFALL is here and fans have seen yet another side of TXT, what are some other aspects you’re excited about or hope to show?
BEOMGYU: I think our fans will enjoy our #ChasingThatFeeling dance challenge videos that we shot in many different locations. Some of them were shot on the set of our music video at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, which gives a behind-the-scenes look of different promotions we’re doing for this album. We also did the dance challenge with other artists that you might not have expected. So, I’m excited about that and I think our fans will enjoy it too.
Jeff Benjamin: Anything else to add or a message you want to ensure fans know?
SOOBIN: We worked very hard on this album. I hope that many people enjoy it and relate to it in a way that makes tough times a little easier.

for @ofmanycol0rs !!!
Love had sent an ask about J.J's blonde party guy era but Tumblr tricked me into deleting it, so here is it my second attempt to talk about it as a post. I hate this Hell site mechanics more than anything, BUT! I am very passionate about this one topic as you can see by the size of THIS.
Tumblr media
GIO.
I am making a little tangent here because this is a great opportunity to talk about J.J's blonde era as a general phenomenon, as well as do a little character deep dive into how Jiahang's mind works when the subject is his public appearance, because I'm yet to fully communicate just how business savvy and attention seeking he is at his core. These two characteristics were very integral to his nightlife downfall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⤴️↪️ A MOMENT IN TIME: J.J's BLONDE ERA PITIFUL FINAL AESTHETIC. He is currently recovering from it successfully, but still. The horrors.
One thing that is key to understand about Jiahang is that he is NOT a team player, he wasn't raised by his social climber pageant mom and his millionaire movie director dad to be one. His long term goal is to stand on his own as an 'icon' - notice the use of 'icon' instead of 'musician' or 'artist' or even 'idol'. He wants everyone to see two Js put together in a sentence and immediately associate them with him (as in J.J Xu, not LOOPiN's J.J, and definely not as J.J from That Once LOONA Sibling Group), but he is realistic with his limitations: Jiahang is not a musical prodigy like Zhiming, or obsessed/respectful with the craft as Minwoo, or has the mental discipline to train himself to greatness like Haegon, and when you're in a group with people like that with ambitions like his, you're always in a competition.
To put it very bluntly: Jiahang is too clumsy to ever become more than an average dancer, he doesn't have an easy voice for singing and he can barely call himself a rapper. Artistic kills can't be the base of his brand, because that's what he sees his J.J stage persona as, a brand. He's not an artist. And if conventional talent can't be his selling point, he has to use what's naturally available to him - personality, a face widely considered to be attractive, a shitton of money, and an extremely sharp eye for business.
Seriously, the amount of marketing stunts he has pulled for and come up with for LOOPiN alone is NO JOKE. Jiahang understands the inner workings of the entertainment industry more than any of his bandmates, and that's his head start.
Now, on the hair. Jiahang has a very deep and sentimental history with his hair, a bit too extense to fully explain with this one post, but he's been wearing it very long since he was a child, because he loves it, and he was picked up on for it constantly. Keep growing it out despite everything what his first real way of asserting himself, and it's the one thing Jiahang is authentic with throughout - integrating it into his branding was essential to him.
He went about it very strategically: J.J never had a defined clothing style, instead, he goes out of his way to wear almost anything to prove that his hair doesn't automatically put him on a visual box, and there is no reason for him to sacrifice it for any gig. He won't be a long haired male Idol until someone tells him time's up, he will be The Definitive Long Haired Male Idol (and in canon he has succeed! Like, K-Pop knows he's the final boss).
A lot of iNSYNCs consider him one of LOOPiN's fashionistas for this plus all the design shit he has, side by side with Seungsoo and Haruki, but that title doesn't fit Jiahang at all. Haruki and Seungsoo have a genuine interest in fashion, while Jiahang has none, it's all performance. He simply wants a stable signature attached to him, something he can have the ultimate control of, and that he won't get bored of maintaining. Alas: his very, very adored long hair.
⤵️➡️ A DISSECTION OF J.J's BLONDE ERA (FEBRUARY 2022 - SEPTEMBER 2023)
Tumblr media
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: (1&2) J.J's 'Punch' teasers, a shocking blonde debut. | (3&4) The overall lengths and colors Jiahang kept transitioning between in his day to day life. | (5&6) 'Mess' peeking through near the end, but integrated into his presenting style. | J.J's 'Beatbox - Street Beat Ver.' and 'Internet War - Tell Me What To Do' teasers.
(1&2): I can't even begin to describe how iNSYNCity completely STOPPED when the 'Punch' teasers started rolling out and J.J appeared not only fully blonde, but with these polarizing face covering bangs. The styling came fully out of his own brain, of course, and he wanted all the controversial attention right out of the gate to plant the seeds of the 'elevation' of his stage persona. He wanted 2022 to be his year SO BAD;
(3&4): Up until that point in his career, Jiahang had his hair straight, ironed out to perfection even when he dyed it anything else than his usual black and brown, but while blonde he always kept it very wavy to drawn an even bigger contrast with his former Idol branding;
(5&6): Oh, mid 2023... The roots showing... The messy teeny tiny ponytails... The color... You can clearly see a lack of polish that is very unusual of him. Jiahang wore a lot, and I mean A LOT of hair extensions during this era right here, mostly to cover up how fucking fried his hair was starting to look due to low maintenance (Dongwook and CIA made fun of him if he showed up Too Put Together at the clubs, and after a while it really started to get to him). He adopted a very edgy Y2K style to try to make it all seem intentional, even had stylized black highlight for a while, but Jiahang felt like he wasn't fooling anyone - it didn't appear as such to the public, lucky him. This is pretty much how he looked until he fully cut off his nightlife circle of "friends" in September, and dyed his hair back to black;
(7&8): Ah, his last blonde official teasers... What a way to go. Blonde J.J had such a dramatic styling but that was very well translated into all the eras he was on, he never looked out of place. That's why even the general public now considers this run to be very iconic, as he wanted. But at what personal cost, Jay?! AT WHAT COST?!
Tumblr media
I am still debating on how his 'clean era' looks like. I'm not sure if he would just dye his hair black and cut off the bits that look Horrible (J.J!Bayi) or if this whole experience fucked him up so bad that Jiahang would cut it pretty short and grow it back from the begging, for the healings (J.J!Didi), but anyways! He is doing better <3 currently <3 not for long <3 like at all <3 he is about to get very fucked up by the narrative <3 but on the bright side (????) that means that he'll have another very Intense hair moment, and spoiler alert, it'll look a lot like this (in Vibes, the length is still something I don't know 😁)

-` ♡ ´- a/n: thanks to those liking, reblogging, and commenting!! much appreciated ^^
*NOT CLICKBAIT!!!* when asmo learns that you, the newest exchange student has a youtube account and following somewhat comparable to his own, he decided right then and there not to like you. however, after an unfortunate (and misleading) exchange goes viral, he has no choice but to fake date you in order to save face. will asmo crush you and put you into place like you deserve? or are those funny feelings in his stomach not hate, like he had thought? like, subscribe, and maybe fall in love (with this smau) to find out!!
Tumblr media
asmo takes a deep breath, stepping out of his car. he’s just got to give you your uniform and then he can leave.
but wait, what if you try to keep him? or are so overwhelmed by his presence you want to take a pic? oh god, he’s going to have to force a smile, isn’t he?
as he gets close to the door to diavolo’s castle, it swings open before he can knock, and barbatos welcomes him in.
“hello, asmodeus,” barbatos says, that all-knowing (and all-infuriating!) glint in his eye. “here to drop off the things for mc?”
“yep!” asmo says, sensing a chance. “and i’m actually in a hurry so can i just leave them with you? i’ve really got to get going.”
“i’m here!” a voice calls, and he sees you practically run into the room. you’re dressed simply, unlike his completely put-together and gorgeous outfit, and your hair is a complete mess. resisting the urge to fix it for you, he offers you a charming smile.
“you must me mc. i’m asmodeus. pleasure to meet you.” as he speaks, he calls upon his charm, eyes glowing pink.
“nice to meet you,” you return brightly, offering a hand. somehow completely unaffected by his powers.
swallowing a scowl, asmo forces more charm into his voice, taking your hand delicately and pressing a kiss to the back of it instead of shaking it. you jerk back slightly but recover admirably. annoyingly. whatever.
“thank you so much for taking the time to drop this off,” you blabber on. “i know you’re probably really busy and what not, but i appreciate it. you’re literally a lifesaver.”
“well, of course i’d help our newest exchange student,” asmo hums. “especially since you’re so cute~”
you laugh. laugh! at him!
“well aren’t you a charmer,” you say. “i was warned about you, and i guess the rumors are true. you’re just as flirty in real life as you are online.”
“you’re a fan?” asmo asks, acting like he hadn’t spent the last hour doing a deep dive into all of your accounts to see if you were following him, if you’d liked his posts, et cetera.
“i wouldn’t call myself a fan,” you dismiss easily. “but i’m definitely aware of your online persona. a lot of my fans are also fans of yours so i see your name pop up in my comment section sometimes.”
“oh, yes, i saw that you also do youtube,” asmo says. “diy videos, yes? how cute.”
as if you didn’t even notice the barb he just threw your way, you smile. “thanks! i’m still pretty new to the whole thing, but it’s been really fun so far.”
asmo returns your smile, lips thinly pressed together. “well. as nice as it’s been to meet you, i really must be on my way…”
“oh! yes, of course!” you exclaim. “again, thank you so much for dropping this off,” you say, gesturing to the neatly folded uniform asmo has deposited onto the nearby counter. he’d taken the liberty of switching the shirt lucifer had selected for a larger size and wondered what you’d do to combat that on the first day of school. petty? maybe. but fun? definitely. “i really appreciate it! i hope we’ll see each other around at rad.”
“mhm, i’m sure we will!” asmo chirps. “and you’re welcome. i hope you enjoy your time here. and good luck on your channel! if you ever need any help or have any questions, let me know. i am kind of an expert.” unlike you, he implies.
“oh, definitely!” you reply, again not even seeming to register his snark, or his attempt at using his powers. what is wrong with you?! “i’ll keep that in mind. have a good day!”
“you too!” he says, sickly sweet, then takes his leave, only letting his mask fall once he pulls out of the driveway. i’ll show you, he thinks angrily, coming here, acting all famous… i’ll show you.

K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Dreamcatcher (Part ONE)
Tumblr media
A Disclaimer: I was planning, when I first started Tumblr, to be a lurker, but then I began an office job and needed something to listen to to keep myself occupied. And then, I started going through entire K-pop groups’ repertoires, album by album, and jotting down my thoughts. And then, I stumbled into K-pop tumblr and decided, you know what, there’s at least four people on this hell site who would read in depth rants about these discographies and at least five who wouldn’t read it and then get mad because it’s kind of our job as K-pop fans. My lukewarm takes should be taken with an entire silo of salt and the knowledge that this is completely for fun and occupying my very bored, very neurodivergent brain. All this to say, for the love of god, I’m a sleep-deprived student and I don’t have time for internet hate, so don’t kill me. With that being said, enjoy!
Here are my credentials: I’m a HUGE fan of Dreamcatcher, and have been an Insomnia since mid-2021 or so, just after the release of BEcause. They were actually the first concert I’ve ever been to, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for that. They totally gave their all for those two hours and I ended up loving them even more afterward. I’m even considering going again if they have another tour.
Dreamcatcher debuted in early 2017, so they’re nearing their 7th anniversary (breaking K-pop’s infamous curse), with 7 members: JiU, SuA, Yoohyeon, Gahyeon, Handong, Dami, and Siyeon. Handong was not involved in their 2020 comebacks due to being in her home country of China when COVID broke out, but she’s since returned. They have very complicated storylines which I won’t be going too deeply into here besides when I think a specific song’s meaning in context is important to mention.
Tumblr media
Their first single was Chase Me, which starts with a deceptively lovely piano and very typical for-late-3rd-gen-vocals. I was surprised by how k-poppy the song sounded, at least in its early stages and verses, but this was their debut after all. A lot of their early work is slowly stepping out of k-pop convention, one step at a time, although a sound all their own wouldn’t come for a couple songs. Any worries I had were assuaged by such a strong chorus, especially the combination of the bridge just before the last one.
Good Night immediately stands out from the often overly-bubbly, aegyo-filled 2017 k-pop landscape with its creepy ticking clock, marionette-like dance moves and an almost violent electric guitar riff. This time the guitar continues through the whole song, so there’s no fear of it sounding same-y. I’ll probably say this many times in this review, but I just can’t get over how well-suited DC’s vocals are to this rock sound, which isn’t always the case for other groups I’ve seen with a rock concept. The distorted voices in the bridge are a nice touch too. The b-side Lullaby is actually quite lovely, and is a good showcase for their voices in a more soothing context.
Fly High is a poppier sound for Dreamcatcher, although still with more of a rock base than is usual in k-pop, which does make sense as it’s supposed to be a prequel to their much darker storyline. I’ve heard it described before as a bit like an anime theme song, and I’d have to agree, especially the “I can make it!” combined with the strings, lighter electric guitar, and super high power note. Even with a bit of a sound change, Dreamcatcher never slows down their energy, which is something I really appreciate. They always sound like they wholeheartedly believe what they’re selling.
Tumblr media
From the EP, Prequel, there are a few great b-sides I could choose (like the off-beat Sleep-walking), but I’m gonna have to say that Wake Up is my favorite. I’m totally biased, but I’ll just never forget the experience of watching them have the absolute best time performing this live for their encore and jumping into the stratosphere while waving a pride flag back and forth. It’s an anthem that needs an audience, first and foremost, and there’s really nothing more exciting than screaming “Wake up, wake up!” at the top of your lungs.
Full Moon is a special single for their first anniversary, and I won’t spend too much time on it, but I really like how it combines that anime-esque energy from Fly High, a harsher electric guitar, EDM, and some ballad elements. It’s a style that DC returns to later in their career, and it’s fun to see a slightly less complicated version here. I never gave this song much of a chance before so I’m glad I did now.
You & I is next in the “Nightmare” saga, and is probably both the most popular of that arc and the most similar to a lot of mainstream k-pop (which I do like, I want to be clear about that. This is not an attack on mainstream k-pop, guys, I run a blog about it.). Maybe it’s a product of that, but in such a strong catalogue it doesn’t really stand out to me. All of DC’s songs add other elements to their rock sound like EDM, pop, metal, or even a flute (we’ll get to that), but You & I is pretty straightforward, as are its lyrics. The chorus and the opening hook are both pretty good, I will admit, and always get me at least nodding to the song. Again, I in no way even dislike this one, and I’m not going to skip it if I’m doing a re-listen or if it comes up on shuffle, but I just never find myself going out of my way to listen to it.
Though the title isn’t my favorite, I quite like the EP Escape The Era. Which a Star may be an average b-side but it's really elevated by their voices and its twinkling instrumentation, while Scar takes some lovely strings and some crushing electric guitars and somehow turns itself from a rock song into a ballad and right back again. Mayday, meanwhile, is much like Wake Up with its anthemic answer, and immediately gets me headbanging to its hook.
Tumblr media
WHAT starts with a tense energy right out of the gate with those strings, and in what may be DC’s best first 20 seconds of a song, it culminates in an excellent electric guitar riff that would feel right at home in a BabyMetal song. When the song returns to “normal” after, it only adds to the sense of “wrong” and foreboding…until the chorus smashes through a brick wall with perfect metal anthem energy. In case it wasn’t clear, I love this song and it’s tied for my favorite. You just can’t do much better than a song encouraging people to wake up, fight their nightmares, and live another day, which is one of my personal favorite song subjects.
In a switch from Escape The Era, I love What but Alone In The City is one of my least-favorite of their albums. That being said, I do like the contrast between acoustic and electric guitars in Trap, and its build up is pretty great. But I usually have more than one liked b-side.
Over The Sky is another special single and returns to the softer, more string and pop-rock led base (or “anime theme”, I suppose). It feels much happier than a lot of Dreamcatcher’s singles, and is a nice break in between their very heavy discography. I especially like the twinkling quality of its background piano.
Tumblr media
PIRI is the end of their nightmare saga, and is a continuation of the defiance seen in What. It’s named after a traditional Korean flute that the song uses to say “sound the alarm (piri), emergency, emergency.” This is the first time rap is incorporated in its own (albeit short) verse, and I think the combination works quite well. The inclusion of the flute in the background is something I’ve never heard in a song before, but its shrillness provides a good contrast to the very low guitar and drums and Dreamcatcher’s voices sitting in the middle, perfectly capturing the song’s whole idea of being stuck in between light and dark. Overall, a fitting finale.
From PIRI’s EP The End Of Nightmares, while I do really like the sweetness of the ballad Daydream, Diamond was an easy choice for me. It has quite a minimalistic chorus, which normally I’m not the biggest fan of (for evidence, look at any review I’ve ever written to hear me decry the existence of anti-drops), but here it’s to let the great guitar hook and electronic background have some time to be appreciated and its fuller pre and post-choruses make up for it.
Deja Vu is a special single made for a game collaboration, so perhaps one would assume it to be a usual ballad or easily-overlooked piece of a great discography. One would assume very, very wrong. I assumed this, when I heard the first, very slow verse and the backing piano. Deja Vu definitely leans more into melancholy than most of their singles, but it's really at the end of the pre-chorus where the band comes in and DC goes full-on rock ballad that it begins to sound like them. The song is a slow burn, definitely, but the incredible catharsis at the end is totally worth it. Just go watch the music video itself, which is full of delightful drama and betrayal, and can best be described as “Macbeth, if it was gay, Korean, and magical.” You’re welcome.
Tumblr media
Raid Of Dream, the EP, was also produced for the game, but the mix of metal clashing and delicate vocals in Silent Night, the backing piano for the full-on ballad Polaris, and the return of the anime theme (plus guitar solo!!) in the call-to-action that is Curse Of The Spider render it quite a strong album in their greater discography.
I don’t normally dive too deeply into Japanese releases, but, like with Taemin, Dreamcatcher’s offer an interesting expansion on their work. Endless Night starts with much harsher rock than most of their singles, while Breaking Out features a surprisingly chill tropical beat, and No More goes full now-or-never nu metal with guitar riffs that would make Babymetal proud.
R. o. S. E. BLUE is another special single produced for a game, and does lead into the more ballady side of k-pop soundtrack songs, but without sacrificing Dreamcatcher’s rock edges. It, like Deja Vu, is a slow burn that doesn’t seem to have much energy at first, but builds up to it through its great pre-choruses. It’s definitely not as good as Deja Vu (few things are), but does remind me of later-stage Gfriend’s more dramatic and celestial sound, and the music video follows JiU attempting to rescue her friends from the magical prison their minds are trapped in, at the expense of herself.
Tumblr media
So that’s where we’ll end it for now, being around halfway through. I mentioned last time in my TXT review that this was supposed to be a one-parter and became two, but the second one is basically done and will be coming out in a few days (after I listen to the new album), not a week from now, and I won’t be doing supplementals. Apologies to the five people who actually read those, lol. So, I’ll see you next time for Part Two. Tschüss!

Reasons I'm enjoying gotham war: a thought exercise.
I wanted to do a deeper analysis but am sitting in a restaurant waiting for my family to get here so might as well dive into it and I can do a more scholarly deep dive later.
I want to talk about Gotham Wars, why I'm liking it, what I think about it, and what I think they're doing well. I'm new to comics (tell me, at what point does your brain start to explode when you try to read the entire DC batfam canon in 2 months. Asking for a friend) but I'm not new to storytelling, so here we go!
K, so im a huge angst fan. It's a disease, not everyone is here for the angst but I most certainly am. The batfamily is so incredibly messed up, which is just right up my alley. I love WFA but let's be real, if they're not crying I'm not as invested. So this run where they are absolutely beating the shit out of my favorite character (Jason Todd)? Mwah. Beautiful. 10/10 will read 100 times.
I read stories for the connections between the characters, not so much the plot. Which is a personal preference thing. So the obvious plot holes and issues with the various characters points of view just don't really bother me. I can suspend my disbelief to think that heroes are running around in spandex beating people up, I can suspend it to think catwoman training an army of thieves to eat (I mean steal from) the rich is a viable idea. I don't care about the logistics, I care about how those things effect the characters.
And MAN do they effect the characters. Honestly I've loved Selina throughout this run. She could get a post all on her own. I love that she's refused to slander Bruce, I love how protective she is over her kids (step kids? Exs kids?) And I love every single interaction she's had with Jason. Honestly the moment that hit me hardest with her was when she's looking for Jason and thinks that if she loses him Bruce will never forgive her.
Obviously, Jason is a worthwhile human that has value outside of Bruce, but I think it really gives us a glimpse into Selina's mind right now. She loves Jason, she's grateful for his support and cares for him, but at the end of the day, he's the love of her life's baby boy, and it is that identifier that will pop up during times of stress.
I LOVE everything about Jason's involvement with this. I like that the tie ins are showing how he disagrees and the main storyline has him already convinced. I love that it explores both sides of his character, I love how it shows how important he is. And he is SO. IMPORTANT.
Bruce has obviously lost his ever loving mind (rip) and vacillates wildly between thinking his children were a mistake and wanting to protect them from everything. Up to this point, though plenty of the bat kids are sympathetic toward Selina, they aren't actively helping her, except of course for our boy Jason Todd.
Jason is actively working against Bruce (shocking right?) And I LOVE that Jason even tells Bruce that it's not just to spite him (though I'm sure that's a plus) it's because he believes in what Selina is doing. And Bruce cannot handle it.
Like I said before, Jason is Bruce's baby boy. The one he can't lose again. The one he needs to protect. But also he has to stop him from murdering people. And above ALL ELSE he cannot stand to see Jason in cahoots with someone else. Bruce doesn't share well under normal circumstances, let alone when he has totally lost his mind.
This vacillation has a lot of people irritated because they think that Bruce is being written inconsistently. I disagree, I think my man has lost his ever loving mind and he wants to both protect his children and STOP them. Him telling Jason he loves him not once, but TWICE within the span of a few panels while simultaneously ruining his life and leaving him completely defenseless is just... dude. My man. My psycho baby. Stop that.
Jason has always been fiercely independent and now that independence has been stripped from him. He literally can't protect himself. He's going to need to rely on other people to help him and heaven knows he doesn't have a good track record of people helping him out when he needs them.
Luckily, Dick knows about the drugging now and is super pissed off (GOOD!) Cannot wait to see where that goes next.
So tldr: why am I enjoying gotham wars? Mostly because so far everyone is obsessed with Jason Todd, which is highly relatable. Also because these relationships are being torn to shreds and looked at from a very interesting lens. Bruce is gone gone gone. Cannot wait to see his horror when he realizes what he's done.

Okay, so another deep dive into symbolism in relation to that one scene with Law vs Big Mom (Wano arc spoilers)
I have honestly loved this bit of the fight against Big Mom and the absolute symbolism we get just from the color choices alone
Tumblr media
Sure, we can argue that it's just a cool monochromatic theme going on with a color pop. But considering that at that moment in the fight, he was literally fighting for his life for a payoff with Kid's combined attack, it's VERY much the callback for Law when he was fighting for his life as a child. The fact that they not only decided to use a monochromatic palate, but also make Law's hair WHITE is such A MAJOR thing when you consider that one of the late stage symptoms with White Lead Disease was the hair turning white. But what really really gets me about this scene, is that you have this part that's in full color when Big Mom asks if he's dead and Lands a major punch on him. Also interesting (and perhaps a small bit of a reach) is that Big Mom's hair is pretty much made of flames at this point in the fight.
Tumblr media
And then you get this cut which looks like blood falling on a mostly white background, which ofc is symbolic of where Corazon died and also can be meant to for the blood spilled in the White Town of Flevance. What’s also interesting to note is that the smaller splotches of blood look very similar to the splotches on Law’s hat when he was younger, which I don’t think they would have made this choice if it wasn’t meant to be a parallel. Also upon closer examination, there is a shape of a heart that is made both with the larger pools of blood, and the negative space, if you really take a moment to look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it's also important to note that the shot with the sword is also in monochromatic colors as the K-Room is in black and white rather than the usual blue, and the magma is the same red/pink as his tattoos and hat spots. He was enduring all of Big Mom's punches to stay alive long enough to ensure he could carry out his goal, much as Corazon did.
And when he calls for Kidd, and he says "Don't make me repeat myself, Trafalgar! Don't tell me what to do!"
You get Law's smiling blood stained face that looks like Corazon's face paint extending from the corner of his mouth.
Tumblr media
And then of course his crew is threatened with giving up their lives to Big Mom and he tells them that they should be the ones getting away
Tumblr media
Then in order to save their lives (and Kid's crew along with everyone else in earshot) He uses the Re-Room
Tumblr media
What else I find even more meaningful is that the bubble in which Cora-san enables Calm is always shown in purple too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously the purple enveloping Law when he uses Re-Room was also due in part to Kid's Damned Punk, but it's too coincidental not to have not noticed
Anyways, thanks for coming to another one of my Ted Talks!

Manga I Enjoyed in 2023
Tumblr media
It's been another great year for manga. And I don't think we wouldn't have it any other way, right?
I got to read a bunch of manga, old and new, this year. But these titles stood out to me the the most.
Honorable Mention: Kindergarten WARS by You Chiba - This was something I needed, post-Assassination Classroom. A school filled with rich kids protected by assassins who have nowhere to go fighting against assassins trying to kill the kids. Not only that, the main female lead is desperate for a boyfriend and will date anyone who looks hot. But if they have certain peeves, the bodies will hit the floor. This is a really funny series with fun characters and a lot of action. It also has one of the best gags of the year.
Favorite Ongoing Weekly Manga: Akane-banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamase Moue - Akane-banashi continues to impress me every week. I absolutely love how every chapter continues to be impactful. Akane is still a refreshing protagonist and I love how it feels that even though she can win rakugo competitions based on sheer determination, Akane knows that she has a lot to learn. This is a stand-out manga that is excellent for teenagers.
Here's my top 5 manga of the year!
5.) A Home Far Away and The Yakuza's Bias by Teki Yatsuda (tie) - Once I got into K-Pop, I had to check out The Yakuza's Bias. I enjoyed a lot of the humor and the gags are well-done. It's a title that really showcases what it means to take a deep dive into fandom when you're new at it in hilarious fashion. But Yatsuda's debut work about 2 boys on the run is one of the best things I've read all year. It's truly a heartbreaking LGBT romance that will touch a lot of emotions. Also, Yatsuda's art is absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see their new work being licensed in the future.
4.) ZOM 100: Bucket List of the Dead by Haro Aso and Kotaro Tanaka - The only zombie manga story I read was Kengo Hanazawa's I Am A Hero, but I gave this title a follow because people were telling me about it due to its messaging. ZOM 100 stands out as an upbeat zombie apocalypse story that speaks to the resilience of people in tough times. I think we all forget that we can do great things in times of adversity if we all get support. There's some great moments in this series worth talking about. I never felt bored reading it. I'm glad I gave this manga a chance because I really think depressed people need to be told that while it's okay to feel the way they feel, they can still try and people shouldn't shame them for it.
3.) Kowloon Generic Romance by Jun Mayuzuki - Hong Kong nostalgia at its finest, in my opinion. This is one of the most fascinating stories of 2023 with regards to finding your identity and reconciling your past with your present. I have this high up because I really like how the central love story is slowly tying into a bigger mystery on why the world in the manga seems very off. People struggle so much with their pasts and I feel that this manga resonates with those folks. Especially me as I find myself longing for past moments that I dearly miss despite having not-so-pleasant experiences I would like to forget.
2.) Chainsaw Man Part II by Tatsuki Fujimoto - I absolutely adore this series. Fujimoto pulls no stops in telling the story he wants to tell. I love the new female characters that have all shown up and the return of a very notable one. I like Denji's development as he really doesn't know what he wants despite being granted a frightening power that continues to be a target to those who want to use him. This is the story of a "hero" who doesn't have the resilience to be an actual hero. It's also a story about people having their emotional needs warped into desires in the worst way.
1.) The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren - I normally don't read horror manga, but this manga is phenomenal. There was so much hype about the manga being released here in the U.S. and it has delivered in all cylinders. The art is great. The usage of sound effects to convey a sense of dread is top-notch. The interpersonal dynamic between the two main characters is frighteningly realistic. This manga, at its core, about dealing with a relationship that should've ended, but didn't. As much as we talk about needing relationships with people to survive, they have to end sometimes. There's a lot of horror and dread over how to talk about a relationship ending and good god, the manga delivers on displaying that. I also love the subtle reminder that bad relationships have serious consequences for everyone else. In real life, we've seen how abuse and interpersonal trauma trickles down from the victim into other parts of life and other people. All of this makes The Summer Hikaru Died my top manga of 2023.
I hope you all enjoyed my top picks. There's been a lot of fun reads that I probably missed out on, so let me know what you guys enjoyed. 2024 is probably going to be another great year for manga and there's already titles I'm looking forward to.
See you all in 2024!

As promised here, I'm continuing a series of posts on NewJeans and why I think the group holds real potential. What I want to briefly talk about this time, is the quality of their music.
Credit: @/haerin1sta
*
Not exactly sure how this is going to come across, but the truth is very few groups in k-pop give me a quality sonic experience. I mean, for a lot of groups, I get no joy from playing them out loud in my space. BTS is one group where the music is so dynamic, textured and layered... I know this probably sounds pretentious, but BTS's music is the perfect blend of cohesive + complex + simple to suit my taste. I enjoy sitting back in my living room, dimming the lights and drawing the blinds, to hear Dis-ease play over my Bowers & Wilkins 800 D4 speakers. It feels like an actual pleasure. I get this with BTS, nearly every time. There's a handful of other groups whose songs I sometimes feel this way about, but there's been no other group that consistently gets me this way lately more than NewJeans.
At least I'm pretty sure there's no other group that gets me to break out a subwoofer more than NewJeans, after BTS.
All their songs have such a deep and rich bass.
It's almost sickening. Listen, k-pop has done R&B for years. The sound isn't new to the industry by any means, but the way NewJeans does R&B you can tell whoever makes their shit, cette personne a eu le cœur brisé par une personne noire.
Take for example a song like ASAP. That moment the bass comes in at 0:40, during the chorus - it sounds heavenly on my speakers. The whole song feels kinda magical and odd, like Christmas in July, and I suspect one reason why is the chord progression which I recognize to follow that of many Christmas hymns... and the deep heavy bass.
youtube
You might not hear it right in this clip because of how Youtube compresses their sound, but I think one can still tell the pitch shifts slightly. The tweaky game-beat percussion that fills up the rest of the song feels disorienting but that's also the point. By the time the second chorus comes in, the contrast it creates feels like you're diving into a pool of cool water on a hot day. It's so good. It's like that weird genre-mix thing SM likes to do in their songs, but with NewJeans it's so much more effortless, weirder, and cooler.

All five girls have clean, clear vocals and very distinct vocal colours. One reason their music is so good, is because all their songs put an emphasis on their vocals. For example, listen to the pulled stems for Hurt.
The first 2 minutes and 50 seconds is pure acappella heaven, and then you realize it's placed in the center. The mix is so full and centered, it's perfect. The other stems in the video from 2:50 too are such a delight to listen to.
youtube
The sense of easy excellence is everywhere in NewJeans' sound and concept. They don't need to force anything, they don't need crazy ornamental riffs, or ridiculous beat switches to capture and hold attention. All the harmonizing that needs to be done is already in the music. It's simple and for that reason, good. Hurt for example is just a well made song.
It's so fun to play in the car. It sounds like a joint Andre 3000 would produce.
Another song that absolutely blows me away when I play it, is Cookie. Can you even try to imagine what the intro on Cookie sounds like with subwoofers?
It's mad.
youtube
*
Ador encourages the girls to fully participate in several aspects, from songwriting (the members have been writing their songs since debut and 4 out of 5 members are credited on their songs so far), to making their choreography, to applying their ideas towards their marketing. It's really remarkable for a rookie group, but I also feel this is a culture HYBE has been trying to create at all their sub-labels.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to more music from NewJeans. Get Up was a solid treat - my ranking of the songs on it so far:
