K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Dreamcatcher (Part ONE)
Tumblr media
A Disclaimer: I was planning, when I first started Tumblr, to be a lurker, but then I began an office job and needed something to listen to to keep myself occupied. And then, I started going through entire K-pop groups’ repertoires, album by album, and jotting down my thoughts. And then, I stumbled into K-pop tumblr and decided, you know what, there’s at least four people on this hell site who would read in depth rants about these discographies and at least five who wouldn’t read it and then get mad because it’s kind of our job as K-pop fans. My lukewarm takes should be taken with an entire silo of salt and the knowledge that this is completely for fun and occupying my very bored, very neurodivergent brain. All this to say, for the love of god, I’m a sleep-deprived student and I don’t have time for internet hate, so don’t kill me. With that being said, enjoy!
Here are my credentials: I’m a HUGE fan of Dreamcatcher, and have been an Insomnia since mid-2021 or so, just after the release of BEcause. They were actually the first concert I’ve ever been to, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for that. They totally gave their all for those two hours and I ended up loving them even more afterward. I’m even considering going again if they have another tour.
Dreamcatcher debuted in early 2017, so they’re nearing their 7th anniversary (breaking K-pop’s infamous curse), with 7 members: JiU, SuA, Yoohyeon, Gahyeon, Handong, Dami, and Siyeon. Handong was not involved in their 2020 comebacks due to being in her home country of China when COVID broke out, but she’s since returned. They have very complicated storylines which I won’t be going too deeply into here besides when I think a specific song’s meaning in context is important to mention.
Tumblr media
Their first single was Chase Me, which starts with a deceptively lovely piano and very typical for-late-3rd-gen-vocals. I was surprised by how k-poppy the song sounded, at least in its early stages and verses, but this was their debut after all. A lot of their early work is slowly stepping out of k-pop convention, one step at a time, although a sound all their own wouldn’t come for a couple songs. Any worries I had were assuaged by such a strong chorus, especially the combination of the bridge just before the last one.
Good Night immediately stands out from the often overly-bubbly, aegyo-filled 2017 k-pop landscape with its creepy ticking clock, marionette-like dance moves and an almost violent electric guitar riff. This time the guitar continues through the whole song, so there’s no fear of it sounding same-y. I’ll probably say this many times in this review, but I just can’t get over how well-suited DC’s vocals are to this rock sound, which isn’t always the case for other groups I’ve seen with a rock concept. The distorted voices in the bridge are a nice touch too. The b-side Lullaby is actually quite lovely, and is a good showcase for their voices in a more soothing context.
Fly High is a poppier sound for Dreamcatcher, although still with more of a rock base than is usual in k-pop, which does make sense as it’s supposed to be a prequel to their much darker storyline. I’ve heard it described before as a bit like an anime theme song, and I’d have to agree, especially the “I can make it!” combined with the strings, lighter electric guitar, and super high power note. Even with a bit of a sound change, Dreamcatcher never slows down their energy, which is something I really appreciate. They always sound like they wholeheartedly believe what they’re selling.
Tumblr media
From the EP, Prequel, there are a few great b-sides I could choose (like the off-beat Sleep-walking), but I’m gonna have to say that Wake Up is my favorite. I’m totally biased, but I’ll just never forget the experience of watching them have the absolute best time performing this live for their encore and jumping into the stratosphere while waving a pride flag back and forth. It’s an anthem that needs an audience, first and foremost, and there’s really nothing more exciting than screaming “Wake up, wake up!” at the top of your lungs.
Full Moon is a special single for their first anniversary, and I won’t spend too much time on it, but I really like how it combines that anime-esque energy from Fly High, a harsher electric guitar, EDM, and some ballad elements. It’s a style that DC returns to later in their career, and it’s fun to see a slightly less complicated version here. I never gave this song much of a chance before so I’m glad I did now.
You & I is next in the “Nightmare” saga, and is probably both the most popular of that arc and the most similar to a lot of mainstream k-pop (which I do like, I want to be clear about that. This is not an attack on mainstream k-pop, guys, I run a blog about it.). Maybe it’s a product of that, but in such a strong catalogue it doesn’t really stand out to me. All of DC’s songs add other elements to their rock sound like EDM, pop, metal, or even a flute (we’ll get to that), but You & I is pretty straightforward, as are its lyrics. The chorus and the opening hook are both pretty good, I will admit, and always get me at least nodding to the song. Again, I in no way even dislike this one, and I’m not going to skip it if I’m doing a re-listen or if it comes up on shuffle, but I just never find myself going out of my way to listen to it.
Though the title isn’t my favorite, I quite like the EP Escape The Era. Which a Star may be an average b-side but it's really elevated by their voices and its twinkling instrumentation, while Scar takes some lovely strings and some crushing electric guitars and somehow turns itself from a rock song into a ballad and right back again. Mayday, meanwhile, is much like Wake Up with its anthemic answer, and immediately gets me headbanging to its hook.
Tumblr media
WHAT starts with a tense energy right out of the gate with those strings, and in what may be DC’s best first 20 seconds of a song, it culminates in an excellent electric guitar riff that would feel right at home in a BabyMetal song. When the song returns to “normal” after, it only adds to the sense of “wrong” and foreboding…until the chorus smashes through a brick wall with perfect metal anthem energy. In case it wasn’t clear, I love this song and it’s tied for my favorite. You just can’t do much better than a song encouraging people to wake up, fight their nightmares, and live another day, which is one of my personal favorite song subjects.
In a switch from Escape The Era, I love What but Alone In The City is one of my least-favorite of their albums. That being said, I do like the contrast between acoustic and electric guitars in Trap, and its build up is pretty great. But I usually have more than one liked b-side.
Over The Sky is another special single and returns to the softer, more string and pop-rock led base (or “anime theme”, I suppose). It feels much happier than a lot of Dreamcatcher’s singles, and is a nice break in between their very heavy discography. I especially like the twinkling quality of its background piano.
Tumblr media
PIRI is the end of their nightmare saga, and is a continuation of the defiance seen in What. It’s named after a traditional Korean flute that the song uses to say “sound the alarm (piri), emergency, emergency.” This is the first time rap is incorporated in its own (albeit short) verse, and I think the combination works quite well. The inclusion of the flute in the background is something I’ve never heard in a song before, but its shrillness provides a good contrast to the very low guitar and drums and Dreamcatcher’s voices sitting in the middle, perfectly capturing the song’s whole idea of being stuck in between light and dark. Overall, a fitting finale.
From PIRI’s EP The End Of Nightmares, while I do really like the sweetness of the ballad Daydream, Diamond was an easy choice for me. It has quite a minimalistic chorus, which normally I’m not the biggest fan of (for evidence, look at any review I’ve ever written to hear me decry the existence of anti-drops), but here it’s to let the great guitar hook and electronic background have some time to be appreciated and its fuller pre and post-choruses make up for it.
Deja Vu is a special single made for a game collaboration, so perhaps one would assume it to be a usual ballad or easily-overlooked piece of a great discography. One would assume very, very wrong. I assumed this, when I heard the first, very slow verse and the backing piano. Deja Vu definitely leans more into melancholy than most of their singles, but it's really at the end of the pre-chorus where the band comes in and DC goes full-on rock ballad that it begins to sound like them. The song is a slow burn, definitely, but the incredible catharsis at the end is totally worth it. Just go watch the music video itself, which is full of delightful drama and betrayal, and can best be described as “Macbeth, if it was gay, Korean, and magical.” You’re welcome.
Tumblr media
Raid Of Dream, the EP, was also produced for the game, but the mix of metal clashing and delicate vocals in Silent Night, the backing piano for the full-on ballad Polaris, and the return of the anime theme (plus guitar solo!!) in the call-to-action that is Curse Of The Spider render it quite a strong album in their greater discography.
I don’t normally dive too deeply into Japanese releases, but, like with Taemin, Dreamcatcher’s offer an interesting expansion on their work. Endless Night starts with much harsher rock than most of their singles, while Breaking Out features a surprisingly chill tropical beat, and No More goes full now-or-never nu metal with guitar riffs that would make Babymetal proud.
R. o. S. E. BLUE is another special single produced for a game, and does lead into the more ballady side of k-pop soundtrack songs, but without sacrificing Dreamcatcher’s rock edges. It, like Deja Vu, is a slow burn that doesn’t seem to have much energy at first, but builds up to it through its great pre-choruses. It’s definitely not as good as Deja Vu (few things are), but does remind me of later-stage Gfriend’s more dramatic and celestial sound, and the music video follows JiU attempting to rescue her friends from the magical prison their minds are trapped in, at the expense of herself.
Tumblr media
So that’s where we’ll end it for now, being around halfway through. I mentioned last time in my TXT review that this was supposed to be a one-parter and became two, but the second one is basically done and will be coming out in a few days (after I listen to the new album), not a week from now, and I won’t be doing supplementals. Apologies to the five people who actually read those, lol. So, I’ll see you next time for Part Two. Tschüss!

I love that shittysawtraps post that's going around rn like "you can make a character playlist for any character but you can't use Mother Mother or Lemon Demon" and then every reblog is like "and for a REAL challenge, don't use any of THESE wildly popular artists, either" and then proceeds to list twenty artists I've never heard of in my life

Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: ahn yujin was a name you didn't want to hear ever since your break up three months ago. sure, it hurt at first, but now you were okay, you were over her. until she gave you a letter.
genre: angsty fluff
includes: panic attacks (happens twice), parties, mentions of alcohol (reader doesn't drink) and making out, all of lsrfm and ive except leeseo and eunchae, lizrei side ship, reader is in denial, angst with a happy ending, exes to lovers, lmk if i missed anything
pairing: ex! yujin x ex! fem! reader
word count: 3.1k
a/n: this took way longer to type down than i'd like to admit
Tumblr media
With shaking hands, Yujin gave you a small envelope before dashing off in the opposite direction. Your heart leaped as you guessed what it was.
Yujin was your ex. It had been three months since you both ended things. She told you that she didn’t feel like she was in the right mindset to continue being in a relationship anymore. While you were grateful that she didn’t just ghost or ignore you completely, damn right did that hurt. What was worse was how you couldn’t really blame anyone for this since it was no one’s fault.
You had moved on though. You had bandaged up your wounds, and the ghosts that haunted your which reminded you of her had been exorcised.
You were ready for this letter, but you weren’t going to read it on campus. Shoving the envelope in your purse, you walked out. Autumn was evident — leaves were turning orange, brown and yellow, falling out of trees and flying away with the gentle, cool breeze. You pulled the beanie you were wearing more over your ears, not wanting them to go cold. The sound of soft, calming music playing in your earphones accompanying the visual treat your eyes got to see made you smile to yourself and momentarily forget about Yujin and her letter. Upon reaching your dorm, you took out the dorm key and unlocked it, seeing the living room pristine as usual. Trust Rei and Wonyoung for that. You went into your room, which was a stark contrast. Throwing your purse and bag onto your bed, you flopped into your chair in front f your desk exhausted. It was a Friday, which meant that you had the weekend to do your work (or procrastinate), so you stayed in your chair in an odd position, almot like a ragdoll.
Your eyes darted to your purse and you sighed.
Yujin.
‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ a voice in your head said.
‘But satisfaction brought it back,’ another one argued.
You reached out for your purse. If you didn’t read it, you’d be in the dark about what Yujin wanted to tell you, and it’d be rude to ignore her and what she wanted to say. Your fingers traced the edges of the white envelope, as if scared to read the contents. Slowly peeling off the seal, you undid the flap and pulled out the paper inside. You unfolded it carefully, heart beating quic-
“Y/N, Y/N, me and Wonyoung are going to the mall to get some new clothes. There’s a limited edition collection. You coming?”
This could wait. A distraction was exactly what you needed.
“Sure. Give me ten minutes to get ready.”
“The outfit you came back in is fine.”
“Bu- Wait, you saw me?”
“Duh?”
“Oh. Alright then.”
Placing the envelope in your desk drawer, you took your purse again, before opening the door of your room. Rei and Wonyoung were waiting in the living room, Rei giggling at her phone and Wonyoung teasing her about it. Their outfits fit them and their personality perfectly, and for a minute you felt self conscious. Their fashion sense was to die for.
“Ah, Y/N! Ready?”
“Yep. Wonyoung, I really like your shirt. It’s cute.”
She smiled sweetly at you.
“Thank you. Yujin bought it for me.”
Your face froze at the mention of her, and Wonyoung (being the caring person she is) immediately apologized.
“Ah, sorry. I know things aren’t all…smooth sailing…with you guys.”
She grimaced at her own mistake, but you didn’t notice. You were thinking about the letter, and your mind was tracing back to the memories of the year you were together, and oh God, oh God-
“Y/N?”
You could feel her hands on your shoulders, concerned eyes looking down at you.
“You’re shaking…”
She hugged you tight in a moment so rapid you barely felt it. Her arms wrapped around you protectively, one of her hands patting your head like a mother comforting her child. Rei was nearby too. You didn’t see their faces, since your eyes were closed shut so that you could prevent your tears from falling, but you could hear Rei softly talking and reassuring you that everything was okay, a stark contrast to how she usually was.
“Y/N, listen to Wonyoung’s breathing, okay? In and out…in and out. That’s it, that’s it. Nothing’s going to happen, you’re just fine.
They didn’t know what else to say. Neither of you did anything wrong, and Yujin was their friend too. It was a confusing thing to handle.
“Y/N, how do you feel now? Do you still want to come?”
“Yeah. Need to take my mind off things.”
“You sure?”
“Mm.”
“Not a clear answer.”
“I am.”
Rei sighed before nodding.
“If you’re okay.”
Tumblr media
Five hours.
You were at the mall for five hours.
And it sure as hell did take your mind off things.
There you were in your room — stomach satisfied, bags with clothes, stationary and other random items (maybe a plushie or two) in the corner, yet your mind was still restless. Delaying the reading of the letter was not a good idea, since now you had even more nerves than before. You had to open it at some point, but holy shit could you just not do it? You took out the paper inside and unfolded it slowly, your hands shaking as much as Yujin’s when she gave it to you.
Tumblr media
Dear Y/N,
It’s been three months. I thought I moved on, really.
As I write this to you, I realize I haven’t.
I’m not asking you to take me back, but I can’t sleep properly at night because I think about you and cry so much.
~ Yujin
Tumblr media
Your eyes widened, and your jaw dropped. You thought you had healed, but this? These three sentence ripped off the bandages and rubbed salt into the wounds in your heart. You put the paper on your desk, wanting to process what you just ‘blessed’ your sight with, although your brain begged you to read it again. In the end, you gave in and read through it again.
And again.
And again.
And then it hit.
Yujin still loved you. It was so simple with the way she wrote it, but due to the shock factor, it didn’t click.
Yujin still loved you.
No wonder she was shaking.
There was another question — did you still love her too?
Didn’t you move on?
Didn’t you?
Or had you been lying to yourself this whole time?
Leaning back in your chair, you started thinking. You would think about her every night, every time you were bored, every time you were free, every time you were stressed — basically, all the time. You’d think about how she’d hold you, comfort you, hug you, kiss you, cuddle you, talk to you, laugh with you, cry in front of you, vent to you…and more.
Whenever you found yourself in an unideal situation, your mind always darted back to Yujin. ‘What would Yujin do?’ was something you’d ask yourself when you were in hot waters.
Maybe you weren’t over her.
Maybe you still needed her.
Scratch that maybe.
You still loved her.
This realization — this enlightenment — shook you to the core.
The world was spinning around you. You desperately needed her. You needed her with you, to hug you, to calm you down and to tell you that everything was going to be alright.
But she wasn’t here, she wasn’t here.
Interrupting the loud and muddled thoughts in your brain causing havoc was a soft knock at your door.
“Y/N-ah? Can I come in?”
Hastily shoving the envelope and letter in your drawer, you call out.
“Sure, Rei!”
You saw the door handle slowly move, and the girl entered. Her eyes scanned the room, before finding a spot to sit on your bed. You tried to act cool, willing your eyes away from the drawer.
“Y/N, how are you feeling now?”
“What do you mean?”
“A lot, honestly- but right now I’m referring to the slight panic attack you had earlier…?”
“Oh, that. I’m fine, I swear. Yujin’s name just brought back back memories, and- I don’t really know.”
She nodded, her face making it evident that she was lost in her thoughts.
“So the reason I came here is to ask you something.”
“Go on.”
“There’s a party happening tomorrow evening Wonyoung’s not going because she wants to complete her assignments, and I don’t want to go alone…”
She pursed her lips into a thin line and looked at you, a tad bit of hope in her eyes.
“I mean, sure.”
“It’s going to be in Yujin’s dorm…Gaeul and Chaewon are hosting it. I’m pretty sure that Yujin won’t be coming out of her room though.”
That made you freeze. Even though Rei had mentioned that it was unlikely that you’d see her, there was still a chance you would.
Did you want to risk it?
Rei had no one else.
Things could either go spectactularly right or horribly wrong.
“I’ll come.”
“Sure?”
“Sure.”
“You’re sure sure?”
“I’m sure sure.”
You laughed a little, and she smiled too.
“Tomorrow, 7 p.m. Wear something…party-ish, but not too formal, I guess? You know what I mean.”
“Yup.”
Tumblr media
6:45 p.m.
You were sitting on the couch of the living room, wearing an outfit you deemed appropriate for the party. Rei was still getting ready in her room, so to pass the time you were on your phone, scrolling through your Instagram feed.
Chaewon. Like, comment.
Gaeul. Like, comment.
Wonyoung. Like, comment.
Jiwon, Rei. Like, comment, cute.
Yujin.
She didn’t post anything fancy or pictures of her going outside or having fun.
It was just selcas of her wearing her new headphones. She had her favorite lipgloss on, her hair was in a bun and she was wearing her glasses in the pictures.
She probably wasn’t going to be in the party then, since her outfits for parties were completely different.
You should have been sighing in relief, but no — you felt your heart sink from disappointment.
Yet, you were staring at the pictures. She looked adorable, and she was smiling brightly in the last picture, and damn it you were falling for her all over again.
If you weren’t down bad before, this cemented it.
You wanted to see her smile, you wanted to see her face right in front of yours, not on an Instagram picture that didn’t fully capture and present her beauty. You wanted to see her laugh because of you. You wanted her to be with you, and it hurt.
You quickly turned off your phone as you heard footsteps. Rei came in, shining with excitement. She looked stunning. You grinned at her.
“Trying to impress someone?”
Her face turned red, and she looked away from you.
“Uh…um…”
“Is Jiwon coming? Your precious Liz?”
She was cosplaying a tomato at this point, giving you your answer. Liz was a nickname for Jiwon that only Rei had permission to use, and bringing it up was how you could squeeze stuff out of either of them that they were unwilling to divulge at first.
“She is, right?”
“Yeah…”
“Cute. Love the Instagrm post too, by the way.”
“You saw-?”
“Of course.”
“Y/N…”
“I’m not stalking you both! I follow you girls, remember?”
She sighed.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. We should get going now, it’s 6:57.”
You realized how quickly time passed while you were staring at Yujin’s pictures. You stood up and walked out the door, not really expecting anything.
When you reached, the strong smell of alcohol hit your nostrils and you winced, not really liking it. You couldn’t back out now, however, so you just shrugged it off before sitting on the couch in the middle of the living room as people danced, socialized and drank all around you.
You didn’t know anyone at the party on a close basis save for Gaeul, Chaewon, Sakura, Yunjin, Kazuha and of course Rei. You preferred to keep your circle of friends relatively small so that you wouldn’t be involved in any drama, although you liked hearing about it. You always thought it worked effectively, but now you were wondering what it’d be like to be on the dance floor with a few other friends.
Chaewon and Gaeul came over and talked to you at some point, but they had to leave after a while since they were the hosts and had attend to other guests. Chaewon told you that Yunjin and Kazuha didn’t want to come. Sakura was busy, so she couldn’t. Just like Wonyoung, you couldn’t help but think.
You were thirsty and they had arranged some juice in the corner for those who didn’t want to drink. You got off the couch, deciding to let the couple making out nearby have some space. You went over to the table with the juice, and you took a bit of time to choose what you wanted to drink. As you were troubling yourself with this very hard choice, you heard a quiet and groggy voice right behind you.
“Hey, can you pass me a cup of apple juice?”
Extremely familiar voice. Your fingers gripped the plastic cup in your hand tighter.
“Yu…Yujin?”
You turned around, and your guess was right.
There she was in full glory.
She had those headphones on, and was wearing an oversized shirt and sweatpants that looked comfy. You subconsciously tugged at the collar of your dress. Her hair was ruffled, and her eyes were red and puffy along with her face looking sullen, making it obvious that she had been crying before.
“Y-Y/N? I’m sorry, I-I’ll just get-get it my-myself-”
“No, it’s…fine. Apple juice, right?”
The tension was so thick that your 3rd grade English teacher’s ass was (quite literally) shaking. She nodded, and watched you pour her a cup. You could feel her eyes on you, waiting for you to say something, and you guessed that it was about the letter.
Suddenly, you could feel her hand on your shoulder, before she gently pulled you close to her as she wrapped her arms around you in one of her familiar and comforting hugs. Her hand was in your hair, stroking it.
“Come, let’s go to my room. I’ll help you calm down.”
You didn’t say anything in protest, instead simply allowing her to take you. The two of you went inside her dorm room, and she closed the door, locking it. Your eyes darted around the four walls you were in, and your mind flashed with memories of that whole year you both had. You set free the tears trapped in the prison that was your eyes. She hugged you tightly again, her voice soothing.
“Y/N, darling, it’s okay, it’s okay. I’m sorry.”
The petname she reserved for you, ‘darling’, slipped out of her mouth, as she always used to use that with you. She froze for a moment, but as she saw that you had no reaction to it, she relaxed. Back then she could call you that unabashedly, but now she had to be careful. You didn’t care though, you loved the way it rolled off her tongue.
After a few minutes, you had finally calmed down. You looked at the plastic cup in your hand, noticing that it was now half empty. You were sure that it was nearly filled to the brim before though. Your eyes trailed to Yujin’s shirt and you saw a few stains on it, solving the mystery of the missing juice. Were your hands really shaking that much?
“Um…sorry about the juice on your shirt.”
“Nevermind it. How do you feel now?”
You slowly moved the cup — now only contaning half of its previous content — to her free hand, but she gently pushed it back and tilted your hand upward, towards your face.
“You drink it.”
“But-”
“Drink.”
She smiled a little at you, and you were mesmerized. You probably looked like an idiot right now, gaping at your ex, but could you really care? She was here, in front of you, smiling at you, and your eyes darted to her lips almost instinctively, missing how they felt on yours.
“Y/N, how do you feel now?”
Obviously, you couldn’t stare forever.
“Better. Thanks Yujin, you…really helped.”
She tilted her head at you endearingly in her usual manner, her smile getting wider, although there was some sadness behind it.
"I missed you."
Her eyes widened, her facial features rearranged into surprise, confusion and a tiny bit of hope.
“You…missed me?”
You looked at your fingers, fiddling with them nervously.
“Uh…sorry if it was a bit inappropriate to say rig-”
“No, no, no- don’t apologize, Y/N.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t mind.”
Her eyes looked deeply into yours, searching for something, searching for an answer. You knew what she wanted, and you took a deep breath.
“I…I read your letter.”
Her eyes widened, and her fingers intertwined with your desperately. You missed the feeling of her hand fitting perfectly into yours badly, and you didn’t realize that until now.
“And…? I’m not going to react harshly to anything you say, I just-just need an ans-”
“I want you back.”
Her eyes were about to pop out of their sockets at this point. Her face was full of disbelief.
“Re…Really?”
“Yeah.”
Gently taking the plastic cup from your hand before setting it on the nightstand near her bed (one you remembered well), she held the other hand too, a silly little smile on her face.
“Y/N, you don’t have to if you don’t wan-”
“But I do. I want you. I want whatever we had. I need it all back.”
Her smile reached her eye, squeezing out a few tears. One of her hands moved from yours to cup your cheek.
“Thank you for giving me another chance, Y/N darling. I was scared of what you’d say, if I’ll be honest.”
You smiled at the familiar nickname, and inched a bit closer until your foreheads were touching. She giggled softly, a sound that warmed your heart.
In a quick movement, you felt her lips on yours in a small yet delicate peck, as if anything more would make you break. She pulled back, looking away shyly. Your eyes were wide, and your face was frozen in shock. Your lips were parted slightly for a moment, before you put a hand on her shirt collar and tugged it, making her jerk forward so that her lips could meet yours again.
Just like that, you both were back in the old times.

PAST
You ran down the dirt path that led to a little clearing in a field of daisies. Sitting on your usual picnic blanket, was your best friend since childhood, Cho Miyeon. You finally reached her, and you let your hands rest on your knees as you try to catch your breath. She looked at you in this state with a slight grin, and you were anticipat-
“Did I take your breath away now?”
“Mi, you’re too narcissistic.”
But then again, she was right.
Every time you saw her, everything else seemed to disappear. You got this rush of adrenaline, these butterflies, this feeling you could get with no one else. To say that it was just a minor crush would be lying. She was the only one who mattered, you felt, and to some extent, it wasn’t just a delusion, it was true.
“Y/N, Y/N! I have an idea!”
“Go on.”
“What if we make daisy chains?”
“Well…I’m not the most talented at that.”
“It’s fine. I’ll make them for us.”
“You sure? I’d feel bad letting you do everything.”
She turned to face you, her grin shifting into a small smile.
“I’ve already told you, Y/N. I’d do anything for you. I’d move mountains for you, if I had to.”
“Do it then. Let me see if your cheesy ass would actually move a mountain.”
“Y/N! You’re ruining the sentiment!”
You chuckled as Miyeon started pouting.
“Sorry, sorry.”
She got up and went to pick daisies, and you promptly followed her. Together, you looked for the best, whitest daisies. She took the flowers and spread them over the picnic blanket before starting to make daisy chains. You watched intently, her fingers made quick work and in almost no time, she finished two pretty chains, one for her and one for you.
“Are these good?”
“No. They’re amazing.”
“Mmm? Who’s being cheesy now?”
“I’m being truthful. There’s a difference.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure.”
She glanced around the field, breathing in a bit, before spotting two dandelions.
“Y/N, do you want to make a wish on a dandelion?”
“It’s just a silly superstition, Mi.”
“You never know!”
You shook your head in defeat. Miyeon’s enthusiasm was too contagious, and you couldn’t say no.
“Fine. Only because you said so.”
She grinned excitedly at you. She took both of the dandelions and carefully handed one to you, making sure that the feathery bits didn’t fly away yet.
“Y/N, did you know that the bits that fly away are called pappus?”
“That’s…interesting?”
“Right? Until now I always used to call them flying or feathery bits.”
“I know.”
You looked at each other and chuckled. Miyeon looked at the dandelion in her hand, and spun it around slightly.
“Mi, what’s your wish?”
She looked at you with wide eyes.
“Y/N, you’re not supposed to tell your wish! That would ruin the magic and the wish won’t come true!”
You scratched your head in confusion. “What…? Isn’t that for birthdays?” “It applies to dandelion wishing too.”
“Curiosity killed the cat then, if you really can’t tell me.”
Miyeon turned to face you again, and she lightly booped your nose with her finger.
“But satisfaction brought it back. I’ll tell you my wish…when it comes true.”
You whined in annoyance.
“Oh come on! That could easily be never!”
She laughed a little at you.
“Fine. In ten years?”
“We could be dead by then!”
“Five years. That’s the minimum.”
She had a serious look on her face and you knew that there was no budging from there. You sighed in defeat.
“No other compromise I can get, huh?” “Nope.”
You stared into her eyes a little longer than best friends would, but neither of you realized it. A lot of things were normal between you both. She turned back to her dandelion. “Y/N, let’s blow the dandelions? They might fly away otherwise.”
“Sure, that’s better than a blowjob.”
Her head whipped to look at you again. Her glossy back hair flopping around her face.
“Y/N. Y/N, that was extremely out of pocket, you unholy little prick.”
She smacked your forehead, leaving a slightly red mark where she hit you.
“Ouch! That was unnecessary!”
“It’s unnecessary just like what you said, my sweet Y/N!”
You blushed a little, which was noticed by her. She presumed that it was because you were embarrassed. No, you were blushing because of the last three words she said.
‘My sweet Y/N.’
Oh, how you wished to be exactly that.
“Alright, no more delays. Let’s blow them together on the count of three.”
“Whatever you say.”
“Three…two…one!”
You blew on the dandelions at the same time, and watched as the pappus flew away delicately in the gentle breeze.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Not as beautiful as you, Y/N."
You blushed yet again. She poked your cheek and smiled brightly.
“Mi! You can’t just flirt like that!”
“Why not? Can’t I do anything with my Y/N?”
“Anything?”
“Y/N! Why are you this-”
“This what? Amazing? Spectacular?”
“Unholy.”
You grinned at her, before nudging her shoulder.
“That’s why you love me.”
Little did you know, she very much did.

6 MONTHS LATER
Miyeon had called you to the daisy field again. It was usual for you to meet up there from time to time, at least every month, but she seemed to be a bit more serious about this now. She stood at your usual spot, but there were no dandelions this time around. She was facing your direction, arms behind her back, lips pursed together. When she saw you, she smiled, but it looked forced and almost…sad. You immediately knew something was wrong. You went up to her and stood in front of the girl on the soft, squishy ground. Your eyes met hers and you frowned slightly.
“Mi, what’s bothering you?”
She sighed, and you could feel your heart sink a little. Miyeon was usually so bubbly and cheerful,  and you had rarely seen her glum or sad in all the years you knew her.
“Y/N, I…I’m moving.”
You stared into her almond eyes, blinking thrice before registering her statement.
Moving.
“Wait, wait- moving as in moving house or…?”
“Moving states. I’m moving to Seoul, and it’s pretty far from here…”
“So I can’t see you again? When are you going? Please tell me you have at least a month or so left? We-we had so many plans Mi-“
She placed her finger on your lips, cutting you off.
“Y/N, I’m going next week. This…might as well be our last meeting, because I’ll be too busy packing and running errands…you get the gist.”
She stared at you hesitantly, waiting for your reaction.
“When- when- are you coming back?”
“I-I really don’t know.”
Her voice sounded small and broken. You stared at her in disbelief.
“You’re going for like- forever in a week, and you only care to tell me now?! Why couldn’t you tell me earlier? We could’ve done so much if I knew we had a time limit of sorts! Why, Mi? Why?”
She placed one of her hands on your shoulders, steadying you.
“I’m so, so, so sorry Y/N, but honestly? You’d be too sentimental about it. Every time we’d meet up, I can see you reminding me about the ‘dreaded day’, and I don’t want that. Do you see my point, my Y/N?”
You stayed silent for a while, before letting out a heavy breath and nodding in agreement.
“Yeah, I see your point, Mi. I get it. I just- I’ll miss you so much, I-I don’t even know where to start. It’s hard, really hard to imagine this place without you. All our usual places, this daisy field…it’ll all feel so empty.”
She wrapped her arms around you, enveloping you in a warm, comforting hug. You hugged her back as you buried your head in her shoulder. There was silence for a while before you heard a few sniffles from her.
“I-I’ll miss you too, Y/N. Dearly. More than you could ever imagine. Like- it’s too hard to put in words…but it feels like I’m losing my world.
“Mi…”
You trailed off, fearing that your voice would crack if you spoke anymore and you’d let the floodgates open. You were doing your best to remain composed and to keep your shit together.
“I know, Y/N. I know. I’ll miss you. I feel guilty about everything we haven’t done yet, but I am deeply, truly grateful for all the memories we made together, even if they were bad ones.”
As she spoke, you mentally kicked yourself for not confessing to her. You weren’t in the mindset to do it now, and there would be no opportunities later. Now, you’d have to live possibly the rest of your life without knowing whether she felt the same way. Damn it, you were such a coward.
She suddenly pulled away and hid her hands behind her back again.
“Y/N, I have a little something for you. It’s not much, but I hope you like it.”
She brought her arms in front of her, revealing a baby pink rose in full bloom.
“So that’s what was poking my back. Boom, mystery solved.”
“Hey, say something about my gift! Don’t you like it?”
You stared at her with a serious face.
“No, I don’t.”
Her face fell and her insides twisted around a bit until she saw your own face break into a sweet smile.
“I love it.”
She gave it to you in relieved happiness.
“Thank God. It took me a while to find it.”
You twirled it around in your hand, careful not to prick yourself on the thorns.
“You know something Y/N?”
“No, I don’t.”
You replied back simply, not taking your eyes off the rose.
“Well, let me tell you. To me, you’re like a rose among the daisies.”
This remark made you look at her face in utter confusion.
“What does that mean?”
“Just like this rose, you have beautiful petals and sharp thorns, yet I love it all the same.
This rose is unique among all these daisies, and it stands out. You’re just like that. In this world, you stand out to me, and you’re extremely special to my heart.”
You stood there in shock, heat rushing up to your cheeks.
“Miyeon, I- that’s so…poetic of you.”
“I know right? I should become a poet!”
You rolled your eyes in playful annoyance.
“Sure, sure. Remember me when you’re famous.”
She held your free hand in hers.
“Y/N, I could never forget you.”
Her eyes welled up with tears.
“Just- just please. Promise me you’ll do the same.”
You smiled sadly at her.
“That’s a promise I can keep very easily.”

PRESENT
You were walking in the old, familiar daisy field. It felt so empty and dull without Miyeon. It just didn’t feel the way it used to.
You had bought a new, similar pink rose when the one Miyeon got you tried out. After that, it became necessary for you to replace the rose whenever it wilted. You didn’t have to, of course, but you wanted to keep that memory of her alive. Not like it was possible for you to forget her, considering that she made such a big impact on your life, but still.
As if it was muscle memory, your feet instinctively walked to the nostalgic clearing, expecting no one else there. Your expectations were wrong, and you saw a stunning, drop dead gorgeous blonde woman sitting on a rather familiar picnic blanket. You took a glance at the woman’s face as her eyes were closed. You could connect her to someone very fresh in your memory, and your stomach started doing somersaults.
You didn’t want to get your hopes up, but it was worth a shot.
“Mi…yeon? Cho Miyeon?”
Her eyes shot open at her name being called, before widening at seeing your face. She got up and ran over to you to hug you tightly, as if she never wanted to let you go.
“Y/N! My Y/N!”
You wrapped your arms around her as well, rocking her from side to side slightly.
“Yeah, your Y/N. When did you get back?”
She moved back before she rested her hands on your shoulders.
“Just yesterday, actually. I was planning on going over to your house to see you again, but
oh, you’re already here, standing in front of me! This- it’s such a wonderful- maybe coincidental, but wonderful nonetheless- surprise!”
“Mi, you’ve only gotten prettier. Like- I was star-struck seeing you.”
Her cheeks turned red as she smiled shyly at you. The old nickname made her feel safe
and warm, as if she was returning to her home after years.
Technically, that was exactly what was happening.
“Come on, let’s sit down.”
She went and sat down on the picnic blanket, and patted the spot next to her. You sat
there, and looked at the blanket curiously.
“You still have this?”
“Yep. It’s not in bad condition, why throw it?”
“Makes sense.”
You both started chatting animatedly, catching up on all the drama and events that happened to both of you during the years you were apart. After a while, you simply sat next to each other, staring at the setting sun and the sky, which was all hues of pinks, blues, oranges and yellows, as if a giant paintbrush had been jiggled into a jar of water. Miyeon’s right hand suddenly held your left hand, and you squeezed it a little, smiling to yourself.
The setting was perfect, almost romantic. A sudden surge of confidence rushed through you, and at that moment, you knew what you had to do. This bravery wouldn’t come back so easily, and it was now or never.
You turned to the girl next to you.
“Hey, Mi? I have something to confess…”
She turned to face you.
“Hm? What is it, Y/N?”
You took a deep breath, trying to relax. You didn’t have to be scared. Even if she did reject you, she’d be sweet about it and would help you until you got over her. Only question was, would you be able to handle it?
“I…I have a crush on you. I’ve had it for a really long time, and it hadn’t diminished one bit while you were gone. If anything, it got stronger…”
She seemed to be frozen in place, and you were already regretting it.
“I’m sorry for doing this so-“
“Don’t be.”
You were confused.
“Why?”
“Because…I feel the same.”
Your eyes lit up.
“Really? Like- actually?”
“Really.”
You smiled at each other lovingly, lost in the moment, lost in each other. She suddenly decided to break the silence.
“Y/N, you might not remember, but…there was this one day where we both made a wish on a dandelion.”
You had that day picture perfect in your memory.
“I remember. Hey- it’s been more than five years…now you should tell me!”
“Yeah, I was going to do that. On one condition though.”
“What is it?”
“You tell me your wish too!”
You nodded in agreement, before smiling shyly at her.
“Well, my wish was to one day be able to confess to you, Mi.”
“Mine was for you to love me back.”
You stared at her, mouth agape.
“See, this wishing in a dandelion thing isn’t bogus; it works!”
“Well-“
You spoke up in protest, but you really didn’t want to have a silly little argument right now.
“Y/N…this is- you are all my dreams come true.”
She stroked your hair gently with her left hand, her right one still holding your left.
“Mi, I hope that in all alternative universes and next lives, I find you.”
You both let your foreheads touch as her arm wrapped around your waist. She whispered to you, her breath soft on your face.
“I love you, Y/N.”
“I love you too, Miyeon.”
“Can I- Can I kiss you?”
You blinked twice, considering what she said.
“Yes…yes you can.”
Her right arm was around your waist, as she used her left hand to gently tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. Her hand moved gently, leaving a featherlight touch. It rested on your cheek, and she stroked it gently. You smiled at each other, before she leaned in and closed the gap.
It was perfect.
Her lips were soft and sweet, and those few moments felt like heaven. She pulled away after a while, looking at you nervously.
“How was it?”
“Mi, that was- perfect. I’ve never felt anything like that before.”
She giggled before speaking again.
“I got you a gift.”
It was another pink rose, almost the same as the ones you bought. She gave it to you, her eyes shining.
“To think that the last time you did this was years ago…Mi, you’re an angel. You- scratch that, you’re my paradise. My own paradise, especially every time I look into those angel eyes.
She blushed heavily. “And Y/N, you…you’re my rose among the daisies.
