Sequencing My Hero Academia’s “Manga DNA”: A Breakdown of Katsuki Bakugo | 1.0 | 2.0 | AO3 (updated to ver. 4.0)

This “presentation” post is a primer on Katsuki Bakugo’s character, influences, character arc, and meta. This post covers topics including Kohei Horikoshi’s manga influences, basic character roles in literature, a brief history of shonen manga and the real-world conditions in which the genre as we know it came to be, Japanese social and cultural references such as honne and tatemae, and other miscellaneous anime tropes.

Baku slowly loses his hearing in school because of his explosions being so loud and close to himself. However, instead of presenting help for his situation, he's cut off from the program.

He can't be a hero if he can't hear: It's a disadvantage on the field, he won't be able to hear his friends or civilians in need of help, he won't be able to keep in contact w/ the agency while on the field, etc...

Baku is livid, he put his entire life into this just to be turned away close to graduation. Not even his friends or family could help. So what does he do?

He goes vigilante. If they won't help him, he'll help himself, get some underground person with a quirk that can help with his ears, and learn sign language for bad days.

He finds other rejected but talented people that join him, creating a band of vigilantes that take Japan by storm. They do good while also trampling on the commission in the process. Fucking with both villains and heroes for the greater good.

Ty!!!I have a good amount but:

I don't think Ojiro and Tooru have chemistry-people rag on Todomomo and Kirimina for being 'heteronormative'(and they're wrong but i digress)but at least both characters in those ships have been important to the the other's arc.To me,it really feels like people just ship them to have a token het ship so they choose the most boring one possible because they already ship Kiri/baku and Momo/jirou

Momo is a trans girl.Idk how unpopular this is but i've barely seen any content for this hc and i actively look for it.She's got massive transfem swag imo

Minamomo and Kyooru > Momo/jirou.I think Momo and Jirou definitely have crushes on eachother and i hc that Jirou was Momo's first love but at the end of the day i prefer the first two

I hate that Izuku,Katsuki and Shouto are a trio.Izuku's admiration towards Katsuki is a trauma response and Shouto deserves better than to be potrayed as liking someone who disregarded his trauma to his face and never apologized.Also:Kiribakujirou as a trio or bust

Fuyumi should be as chaotic as her brothers in Todosibs content.Girl characters deserve to be as interesting as boy ones and if Shouto's positive feelings towards E slur can be seen as bad writing,the same should go for her

Dabi and Hawks' relathionship has exactly zero romantic coding-they were never even friends-and they barely have chemistry platonically.Hawks was PRETENDING to be a villain,he was never a part of the Lov,and bnha ain't a fake dating fic or a YA novel

Miruko should be her own character in fanworks instead of Hawks' Sassy Black Best FriendTM
