Author & Mensch: Reflections on the impact of @neil-gaiman on my life, in essay and doodle
As a woman of a certain age, I am a well-practiced overthinker. Nerd, geek, know-it-all, intellectual, the names have been biting or praise depending on who wielded them. They’re all true, and I embrace them.
In the early days of adulthood, when I was a wee 20-something overthinking nerd, geek, know-it-all, intellectual (20+ years ago), I became deeply interested in image and text and text-as-image. While friends were watching and arguing over Survivor, I was obsessing over Peter Greenaway’s The Pillowbook and Prospero's Books and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. (To this day my copies of the Sandman graphic novels and the English translation of The Pillowbook of Sei Shonagon are proudly displayed on the good bookshelves—you know, the ones I want people to peruse.)
Sandman isn't merely good storytelling and good art, it teases at some of the fundamental questions to which my religion-major heart was consistently and reliably drawn. It modeled a way of rendering the questions—and suggested answers—I would never have imagined on my own.
In those days, I created an artist's book: an altered gift edition of Hamlet. I explored Ophelia’s femininity and the inevitability of her break with her mental health, caught as she is between Hamlet and her father. I imagined her story if she’d had true agency. I investigated the way art (fan art?!) had shaped my understanding of the play and my relationship to it. I layered in my story—my resonance and dissonance with hers—and my art, along with images of famous and not-so-famous paintings of Ophelia. I proudly named Greenaway and Gaiman as influences.
I imagined myself an artist. And, truthfully, I suppose I was one.
I read Good Omens back then, too, delighting over the religious tropes and subversions, the humor, and the fundamental faith in humanity that shone through.
In the two decades since then, below the din of “responsible” choices (that have mostly moved me away from imagining myself an artist) there has been a melody quietly bringing me comfort, shifting my perspective, and reminding me who I want to be. When I stop to listen for and name the music, I realize much of it generates from Neil Gaiman.
The Graveyard Book gave me comfort and hope as a new parent.
Ocean at the End of the Lane reminded me of the layers and the depths⏤the archetypes and metaphors⏤present in everything around me, if I am willing to seek them.
Neil’s anecdote about meeting Neil Armstrong has been a talisman against imposter syndrome. Or, more precisely, it has been a permission slip for forgiving myself when the imposter syndrome inevitably surfaces.
The episode of Dr Who he wrote (“the Doctor’s Wife”) changed the way I understand the entire Dr Who experience before and since.
Lucifer (tv), which his work inspired, gave me joy, comfort and distraction through a tough time in my life.
When, a few years ago, I realized he is Jewish, I had that swelling of pride and resonance that I always get when someone I admire shares that identity with me.
And now there’s the Good Omens tv series. It has opened something in me I didn’t realize was closed. Crowley and Aziraphale are helping me better understand myself, and love, and gender, and storytelling, and, believe it or not, Torah. I am writing again for the first time in ages. I'm drawing more often and with more joy than I’ve known maybe since childhood.
I’ve been getting back into my gratidoodle practice, drawing and writing what I’m grateful for. And when I decided to add Neil Gaiman’s face and some words about my appreciation for his work to my sketchbook, I realized he’s brought me full circle.
Text and image and text-as-image + Neil Gaiman + story is an old constellation for me. And once again, I find my thoughts dancing, shifting, blossoming to the quiet melody of (one of?) the greatest storyteller(s) of this generation.
And now that I am actively engaging with other Gaiman fans, I see how responsive and kind and encouraging he is to those of us who love his work, and his name is permanently etched on my heart: a benefactor, a teacher, a role model.
How satisfying and fitting that such a powerful and resonant voice, miraculously, thankfully, beautifully, also seems to be a genuine mensch.
B”H (thanks to God) that I am alive at the same time as such a one.
#I didn't realize I was going to write AND draw when I started this #but I felt I needed both #I wish I had a flatbed scanner #this photo doesn't do it justice #there's greater nuance in the color in person #Stories matter #Art matters #like, really matters #Neil Gaiman is a gift to this world #Good Omens #Crowley and Aziraphale #Ocean at the End of the Lane #The Graveyard Book #Neil Armstrong and imposter syndrome #The Doctor's Wife #So grateful for tumblr

Frida & Sarah by mairithetree
Today for bi visibility day 💗💜💙, celebrated in France and in many other countries, I wanted to share with you a special piece I worked on for the last few days.
Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923) in her Hamlet costume and Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954) in masculine clothes side by side, two bisexual women who marked art history in different eras. It's a hommage to art nouveau as well and to Mucha who portrayed Sarah Bernhardt in many illustrations. Most of the flowers represented as patterns are flowers Frida had worn in her hair 💖💕
Here are the refs that inspired me for that piece : link, link
I cherish this illustration very deeply because this is how I strongly connect with my bi/pansexuality visually speaking : it's intricate, fluid, and colorful.
Going to see exhibitions about Sarah Bernhardt and Frida Kahlo this year had marked me and helped me a lot with the proccess of defining myself. That's why I wanted to draw them together 💖
Happy bi visibility day 🌈

The Tumblr reblog sensation is returning. But like the Sayians or Shakespeare’s folios, it has the potential to develop in many forms.
Visit kamehamehamlet.com to be notified when we have more details.
Follow this blog for a peak behind the curtain.
And read on to learn more about the show, how we got here, and where we’re going.
Thank you for waiting just a little bit longer.
Revival Project Q&A
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Daniel Cole Mauleón (@writepictures), the writer of Kamehamehamlet. In 2015 I co-founded the theatre company Play-Dot Productions with KHH’s director Shalee Mae Cole Mauleón.
What is Kamehamehamlet?
Tumblr media
Kamehamehamlet: Good Night Saiyan Prince, was an hour-long one act play, performed during the 2015 Minnesota Fringe Festival. It’s a staged retelling of Vegeta and Freeza’s battle on the planet Namek. Marketed as a Dragon Ball Z and Hamlet mash-up, the parody quickly shuffled off its weighted gi, revealing it was actually a Waiting for Godot spoof. After five performances, Vegeta hung up his helmet of spiky hair. Seven years later, K (@amokslime) wrote this incredibly gracious post on Tumblr, which inspired two people to reach out to me via Reddit to ask if I had a script or a recording of the performance.
I want to pause the semi-marketing voice and say a heartfelt thanks to K. Kamehamehamlet was brought to life by an incredible team of artists during a summer I’ll never forget. We got laughs at jokes, gasps at fight choreography, and we broke even on the budget (a Fringe miracle TBH). K’s post gave me the chance to revisit that show through someone else’s eyes. The mix of pride and humility it stirs up is truly indescribable.
If there is art which has changed you, and especially if the artist is still alive I encourage you to non-intrusively share that with the artist.
Is there a copy of the script?
Yes, I’ll speak more about that at below.
Is there a recording of the performance?
There was, but I genuinely lost the files. And that’s for the best, honestly. It was a last-second attempt, filmed from two cheap cameras (with different qualities and resolutions!), both at bad angles and with truly awful audio. Trust me. It’s better this way.
That said, I do have other archival footage from rehearsal's, tech, etc. that I look forward to sharing for those curious.
What’s next?
This is the question I’ve been asking myself over the past year and the reason it took so long to post anything. Especially since one thing I want to do differently this time is make sure that any artists involved are meaningfully compensated for their time and skill. However, I can’t plan without a better estimate of what kind of support we would have, and I didn’t want to share our intentions without concrete details.
Right now, the best way you can support this project is by signing up for the announcement on kamehamehamlet.com.
The second best thing you can do is to share with others about this project, if I’ve learned anything reading through the comments on K’s post, it is that there’s a much bigger audience for KHH than I could have ever imagined, and you likely know at least one more person who would be interested.
And while I don’t want to promise anything I can’t deliver on, I will share that I’m planning on making the script available this year and I’ll be writing a separate post about that in near future.
If you’ve read this far thank you so much.

Yandere! Sebastian Sallow x Reader
Tumblr media
"I still can't believe you of all people lost in a duel." Ominis can't hide his curious delight. "I've offered my greetings to that new fifth year, but I wouldn't've guessed in a thousand years that they were this skilled!" he chuckles, amused. He wishes he could see what expression his friend is bearing right now.
Sebastian returns the smile. He was never one to shy away from defeat, especially if it comes with such a worthy opponent.
"No joke. I might've been pulverized by that troll in Hogsmeade, too, if they weren't there. Some good moves for someone that just landed at Hogwarts."
Sebastian recalls the brief trip to Hogsmeade to help Y/N with supplies. He's rather embarrassed to admit the excitement he felt when Professor Weasley asked him to accompany you. Perhaps you even asked for him, out of all other people. Everything is carefully etched into his memory, down to the finest detail. The small talk you had on the way to the hamlet. The firm swish of your wand as you took charge without hesitation during the troll attack. The little laughs that erupted from you when he tried to lift the tension with poorly made jokes at Three Broomsticks.
The cunning Slytherin doesn't fall just for anyone. In fact, it wasn't even included on his agenda, given the situation with his sister Anne. But a mysterious and charming transfer student suddenly dethrones him in class and before he knows it, he's spilling all his secrets under the guide of that innocent smile and he finds himself hoping you'll do the same.
"You're awfully humble about it, too.  Merlin's beard, the surprises don't seem to end. Don't tell me you-" Ominis politely stops himself with a cough. He's saying too much at once. Better to let Sebastian figure out his own feelings. "We should get ready for class."
Considerate as always. But Sebastian is very much aware of what Ominis was about to inquire. As adventurous and reckless as he is, there's an equal amount of introspection that follows quickly behind, and the young boy has already been analyzing the stubborn feelings that've bloomed ever since laying his eyes on you.
Sebastian is pacing back and forth as his heels clack on the aged stone. He can hear you and Ominis discussing his newest idea of trying to find Salazar Slytherin's scriptorium. He's confident it could contain some clues on how to save Anne, though his confidence had to brake at the immediate refusal of his companion. He realizes very well why Ominis is so against anything to do with the Dark Arts, but at the same time he feels that the overall goal of healing Anne from the curse is a good enough reason. Seeing the disapproving frown form on his friend's face completely flattened his mood and he doesn't have high hopes you could change anything.
If worst comes to worst, he'll just have to rely entirely on you. You've proven yourself to be smart in your ways, so both of you working together can only lead to success. Yes, the two of you could take anything on. If he has you by his side-
"Sigh. Alright. You've convinced me. I'll tell you what I know."
Sebastian is staring in disbelief.
"Now you'll share? You wouldn't tell me when I practically begged!"
"Turns out it's easier to get people on your side when you're not constantly getting into trouble." you wink at the boy playfully.
"While Sebastian IS the bigger menace, I'm afraid you're also somewhere up there in the top, Y/N." Ominis seems to have calmed down enough to respond back with humor.
Sebastian quietly watches the exchange and feels his heart tighten. What's there to be bothered about? He got what he wanted. He should be glad about it. Maybe Ominis has a soft spot for Y/N. Maybe Y/N knows how to get on Ominis' good side. But when would they gain such intimate knowledge of each other? Did they get this close behind his back? Ominis took notice of Sebastian's interest in Y/N. To think his own friend would just disregard all that and-
"Are you coming, or not? This was your idea to begin with! What're you spacing out for?" you're snapping your fingers impatiently in front of the Slytherin.
"Probably scheming the next way to get us involved in strange business" Ominis hums.
"What? No! I was jus- I-..." Sebastian groans, irritated. "Let's just go."
Fantastic. Now he's made a fool of himself in front of Y/N. He mustn't get distracted. He came here with one purpose and he'll show you just how reliable he is.
And yet, as the minutes pass, the distance between the two of you grows further. You're quick to figure out the traps and puzzles after Ominis unlocks the first door using his ability to speak Parseltongue. What does he have in order to compete?
Sebastian clenches his fists and feels the resentment building up. It's not the time to despair. Don't be pathetic. Y/N doesn't need someone that bemoans their lack of power. Ominis may be a Gaunt, but Sebastian's ambition is unmatched. His relentless research and endeavors are not in vain. If he could only find out more about the Dark Arts, he'd be able to protect Y/N and be a fitting partner for- Ah. A silent gasp escapes his parted lips. He's here for Anne. He needs to find a cure. When did he forget about it? No, no, he didn't forget. He can want more things at once, can't he? They don't exclude each other. And once his beloved sister is healthy and happy again, he can dedicate himself entirely to you. Then you'll see that no one else can compare.
He's almost getting lost in thought again when he detects some sort of glowing scribble sprawled onto the tiles.
"Crucio...and the last journal entry of your aunt, Ominis." You wave the yellowed page and approach the two boys. "What could this mean? She mentions being trapped here - blocked by an Unforgivable Curse."
"This... is where she died. This is where we'll die. I shouldn't have listened to either of you!" Ominis is becoming more agitated as you raise your hands in an attempt to pacify him.
"Ominis, I'm truly sorry about your aunt. But, I know what to do. It's going to be difficult." Sebastian is fixated on the carved wall in front of him. You take a moment to observe him and his focused gaze. Paradoxically, it's these stressful moments that seem to bring a certain calm to him. The gears begin to twist and turn and he's cautiously examining possible solutions.
Sebastian lays down the plan to you and Ominis. Someone will have to cast Crucio and the pale, blind boy is even more drenched of color. You can clearly notice the twists of his expression and regret wells up inside of you. You hastily shove Sebastian away to allow for a separate talk.
"Listen, we will NOT force Ominis to go through this again."
"Oh, I'm sorry to have upset your precious. Truly. I must have gone astray in my search for...you know...making sure we don't end up dying."
"What's gotten into you?! Ominis is your friend! You of all people should be looking out for him. Godric's heart, you're impossible sometimes!" you turn around with a loud shuffle to indicate your indignation.
In a panic, Sebastian grabs your wrist to stop you. He shows a puzzled countenance and his eyes rapidly dart around in an attempt to find the words.
You're right. Ominis has always been his best friend. If anything, he's the one that had encouraged Sebastian to pursue his feelings towards you. Why would he suddenly suspect him of such betrayals? The boy furrows his eyebrows. He's scared of his own jealousy. Just like the serpent statues that he'd faced moments ago, it twirls and spirals feebly until it abruptly leaps from the dark, jaw unhinged and glistening fangs dripping with venom. He doesn't know when it had slithered its way in or how to make it go away.
"Please forgive me. I do agree that involving Ominis would be too cruel. As it happens, I know how to cast Crucio myself. But if you'd like, I can teach you instead. As you might expect from an Unforgivable Curse, it's excruciatingly painful. You can cast it on me. I brought the two of you here, it's the least I can do."
Sebastian's mouth curls into a small, reassuring smile. He scans your features, wondering if he'd missed any aspect of you. He's clueless on how to deal with all these violent emotions that overwhelm him sometimes. Maybe they're just proof of how serious he is about you. He exhales discreetly, reaching some sort of revelation that puts his mind at peace: in this very moment, there is no one else that loves you as much as he does. And he'll continue proving it to you forever. That's the only thing that matters right now.
He glances down at his now warm hand holding your thin wrist.
"What do you say? I'll follow whatever you decide to do."
You purse your lips, considering the options.
"I..."
What will you choose?

Hello! This is very out of the blue, but I just wanted to say hi and thank you. A million years ago, I was a shy little high school kid who adored Hamlet and wanted to do art, but didn’t think I had a chance. You were “the coolest kid” on Tumblr, and massive inspiration to me. I remember gushing to my friends when you responded to my asks.
I recently came back to tumblr and found those old asks (askredwolf, the kid who’d share Hamlet memes to make her dad laugh. He still loves them).
Thank you for being so kind. You’re an incredible artist, and your work really brings me back to how happy it made me back then.
That means a lot, thank you so much! I still remember those asks, and I'm delighted that my art made you and your dad smile. It's wild to me that people remember my Hamlet stuff from years ago :,D
I know it's been a while since I've made any Shakespeare art and have been posting more about my OCs, so thanks for sticking around regardless. ^ ^

recommending the made in abyss anime (which is fantastic, truly a masterpiece adaptation of masterpiece source text, even moreso s02 than s01 or the movie) is made tricky partly by the infamous sexual interests of the creator, which shine thru in the anime even if not as clearly as in the manga. this is what everyone says and its kinda true
but this is at least a dignified competing access need. he is clearly indulging in smth he likes and catering to ppl in the audience who share his tastes, and doing so in spite of the inevitable alienation of many potential readers/viewers. he is making the art he wants to make and it wont be fully to everyones tastes. this is a legitimate tradeoff
what makes me more hesitant is the way the anime (less so than the manga, but still quite a lot) frontloads the most boring, generic aspect of the story: the relatively generic fantasy town at the mouth of the Abyss, complete with a bunch of fairly stock characters with mostly stock character designs to match. they spend like, what? three episodes on this shit? plus the early parts especially are suffused with mysticism about the significance of biological kinship, in which it is treated as self evident that a young girl would care deeply about an older woman with whom she has had basically no contact most of her life simply bc the latter gestated the former. the Abyss, the core of the setting that is the beating heart of the story, is barely visible until like 1/3 thru s01
its like if the divine comedy spent the 1st ten cantos on some unremarkable italian hamlet and traded in beatrice as dantes motivator for invented daddy issues

The analysis of characters' names in Stay
First of all I want to apologize for any mistakes and potential misinterpretations. My English is poor, I'm obviously not a writer, so don't take it seriously. Just a bunch of thoughts that I finally got the courage to share. Feel free to share yours too!
Henry Letham
Some of you're probably aware that Letham is an anagram of the word 'Hamlet' which is referred to numerous times throughout the film.
I can assume that his last name also has something to do with the Latin word lētum (sometimes written lēthum) that translates to 'death', 'ruin,' destruction' in English.
Sam Foster
to foster — to look after or to take care of (a child or a young person). Throughout the movie, Sam fussed over Henry like a mother hen with one chick, so there is no denying that he was some kind of father-figure to Henry in his dreamworld. In the script, Smitty even mistook Sam for Henry's father once.
Tumblr media
Lila Culpepper
This one might be very far-fetched, but Lila's last name reminded me of the Latin word culpa, which can be translated as 'blame', 'fault' or 'guilt'.
Athena
I'm convinced that her name refers to the Greek goddess of wisdom, war and arts/crafts. Athena got a few minutes of screen time, but she struck me as very ambitious, powerful and intelligent young woman. And she's good in different forms of art, therefore I guess Athena is a perfect name for a girlboss like her.
Tristan Rêveur
The name Tristan comes from the French word triste meaning 'sad', 'sorrowful'; 'melancholy'. Rêveur can be translated from French as 'dreamy' or 'dreamer'.
Technically Tristan Rêveur is a sad dreamer, which I find quite interesting.

Hello there ! Do you have any headcanon about Lady Maria ? Like maybe her relationship with other characters than Gherman and Adeline ?
Thank you for an ask! I've posted some headcanons about her past ( x )and her habits and alike ( x ) but it was a considerable time ago! Also I have a delayed ask from my friend @heraldofcrow regarding Maria's family because the sheer amount of people I needed to cover and contexts I needed to explain crashed me shdfhsd (I will post it when I am ready Crow </3 )
I will cover more or less solid ideas here though because some headcanons I am still just bouncing around!
Maria and other Old Hunters
Tumblr media
Like it says here, she and Henryk were the ones helping Byrgenwerth, descending from the families with close ties to ancient cultures and having a lot of knowledge under their belts (as well as personal interest)! Both of them are not very talkative outside of "important" stuff. However, every time they do speak with each other it is very agreeable, fulfilling and positive experience! They share a lot in common and understand each other's struggles and fears effortlessly!
Djura was a person she respected a lot, especially for being the fellow denier of magic using, unlike the rest of Old Hunters that enjoyed arcane weapons, Moon-granted powers, bells, etc etc. That's why Powder Kegs were "heretical"! They both only relied on their skills, only he also was a great engineer! She considered straight up joining Oto Workshop (remains of which later became Powder Kegs) but did not like what their fixation on fire was unfortunately bringing in her. She has the secret pyromancy power, you know x)
Tumblr media
^ The fact that concept art features a Charred Hunter similar to Djura with a rapier and one of Powder Kegs weapons imitates a Cainhurst weapon makes me consider the idea that Maria and Djura knew each other even before the Hunters stuff! I will examine this idea later, but them being old friends is an appealing idea! In either case, for her Djura was like that one "cool mutual" who instantly gives you self-esteem boost if they like your post! xD Djura was yet to undergo his character arc at the point Maria's resolve as a hunter cracked after Fishing Hamlet though, so his (former) feverish hatred to the beasts made her trust him less. She already got burnt when Gehrman somewhat harshly didn't understand her faltering and didn't want to risk getting judgement from Djura, the second person she admired, too.
Gratia is a cousin that Maria never learned of, as Gratia was discarded since birth (born same kind of Pthumerian-Human hubrid as Snatchers)! It was rather lucky to still meet within Old Hunters as adults. Maria felt quite comfortable with her, coincidentally getting sense of 'older sister' figure from her that she missed after parting with Annalise! Even though Gratia and Annalise are nothing alike of course x) But a much more stronger, more bold and confident, and more tall woman is something that allowed Maria to connect with her softer side, especially when Gratia would straight up pick her up in a (too tight) embrace when she congratulated her with something, or expressed vocal wish to "protect" her!
Matias (Blood Minister from intro cutscene) used to double as a bar man at the times when alcohol was still relevant in Yharnam, so she interacted with him outside of the hunt enough! She needed a glass sometimes, okay? xD He is a curious person though and prefers to get under facades and see what people are really made of, so he abused being sober while she was drunk to ask her about her feelings on various topics and people, or pry on her secrets. She was so stoic and reclusive, he just wanted to know who was the person under the Hunter role! Very crooked of him, but at least he didn't use drunk secrets of others for evil, he is Just Like This lol. He eventually felt guilty for being so shady though. As one of the first Old Hunters who started to experience the potential drawbacks of the hunt and blood (losing legs capacity, blindness, having to amputate fingers etc), he also was one the first to get in a wheelchair. Maria was so nice and helpful to him despite him becoming "useless", he should have been nice too, this old nosy bastard.
Maria and the Healing Church
Laurence... Alright, heeeere we fucking go again with my beloved image that is a pillar for many of my headcanons:
Tumblr media
Maria and Laurence are not blood-related (at least as far as great-grand parents go, I didn't develop centuries of family tree!), but saw each other since younger age! They were not close though, as Laurence travelled and studied abroad in his kid and teen years! Whenever he visited, it was also not more than simple exchange of news at the dinner in a group of people. Maria and her squad (Annalise, Crow and King) knew him as arrogant asshole with inflated ego, but he returned in Maria's life in Byrgenwerth era, as admittedly more charismatic and pleasant person than before.
They managed to patch up years of awkwardness and distance and became friends, especially since he got along with Gehrman quite well! ...but then he decided that HE was special, and HE could tame the holy blood when Loran and Pthumeru Ihyll failed 🙄 Maria was more by the side of Caryll, Rom and Willem on the big bad academical infighting! She argued with Laurence a lot. When he convinced Adeline that letting him surgically alter her body to produce holy blood was a good idea, Maria straight up could not handle it maturely. It is a long one to go into but Laurence already tugged some unexplainable sense of fear and hesitation in Maria. She felt like his influence somehow was everywhere (not she alone, actually) and she never could stand up against him properly, but "losing" Adeline was the very peak of the sense of helplessness. She wished she reacted more maturely and her weakness only proven Adeline that Laurence was more reasonable trustworthy (owch.....), but in either case, since then a HELL of passive aggression and coldness followed between Laurence and Maria.
....and then, they somewhat broke the ice in Research Hall arc, after Maria abandoned the hunt and could at least entrust in evolution through Eyes and Stars. They both figured they took bad turns in life and there was no point in lamenting the past, they still needed to save what could be saved. They finally had pleasant, albeit very bitter-sweet interactions after years of mutual vitriol. However, I am considering a very dark idea of Laurence seeing that Maria was bordering suic1dal moods and not only letting it happen, but even "encouraging" it in secret, as he wanted her out of the way before commanding Cainhurst massacre. No, he knew that he had her will broken and she would just let him do it, he was not scared. But he... didn't want it. He figured it was a better way to go for her as someone who still believed she could atone for her sins, rather than living to reach complete state of helplessness. He "allowed" her one last "choice" in her life.

Fucked up concept, fucked up concept, I know.
With Brador relationship was a bit strained, but they were more of friends than Maria and Laurence. At least, she was not feeling so inexplicably cornered by him with all her might as a warrior, nor Brador was trying to scare her into being hush. He believed she was smart enough to not get herself or her friends into more trouble, albeit always felt bad for her kind, honorable nature. He knew he was an opposite of her, completely drenched and even reveling in disgraceful crimes he was doing to help "smarter people" advance. But, Maria pleaded with Brador to get a word out from her to Laurence, to pay attention at the weird actions of Doctor Micolash at the Research Hall and why patients kept suffering and diving into 'Sea', and Brador listened to her. It is quite a confession from Brador to go against Laurence for someone, and Maria knows this. They'd have very deep friendship under better circumstances, I think.

Vasylissa (White Church Hunter) is another character Maria saw often! Technically, Maria replaced her as an overseer and caretaker of Research Hall in the end. Even before that, Maria appreciated this person and was always relieved to find her in Grand Cathedral praying instead of Laurence. Vasylissa at least remembered to "fear the blood" much better than everyone else in the Healing Church. Very arcane-leaning, very should-have-stayed-in-Byrgenwerth person that helped Maria to feel less alone. They exchanged everything they knew as well as had many heart-to-hearts, and Vasylissa considered themselves to be good friends.. She was one of the people who cried and blamed herself when Maria was gone. I also like to play with an idea that Maria would like to approach her romantically, but noticed someone else had eyes on her - that Black Church female Hunter who guards her! So she decided to step back.
Ludwig was also a person with whom Laurence and Healing Church stuff didn't sour the things with! Heck, the guy loved what Laurence represented more than himself, and mostly was just fixated on the hunt (and his 'Guidance', but that was a secret!)! They are both knightly and full of honour, naive and kind but ruthless in battle! I even wrote a post of headcanons of them as a pairing once ( x ), but everything said in that post still applies minus the dating bit :') They were good friends that vented and could comfort each other, they disagreed on the same Healing Church's antics, they had friendly sparrings, they kept each other in mind upon separation and stocked up things to share with each other when they'd meet next..
I think when Maria went from 'magic bad humanity good' to 'maybe there IS some hope for humanity in pursuit for Stars and Moon 🤔', Ludwig showed Holy Moonlight to her. He was a little reluctant and jealous considering it, but could not see Maria so doubtful and lost. If sharing something so intimate could've helped her to finally make sense of her conflicts, then so be it. Only.. it made things worse, because Maria saw that the violence and murder was in the plans of even the Great One that was advertised by Laurence and the others as the way to help humanity!
Maria and Cainhurst
Tumblr media
This is the part where I unfortunately have to restrain myself, because there is so much to unpack that, like I said, I still have a separate ask to work on this!
But, Maria had sort of a friend group since childhood with Annalise (half-sister from her cheating father), Eidinghardt (Bloody Crow of Cainhurst) and Elias (King)! Her relationship with Crow were the closest of the group, as the two were like siblings! They were fighting a lot but not in a toxic way, more like the typical siblings banters! Maria additionally pinched Crow's cheek or invited him for a nice fist fight when they were kids and Crow constantly made Elias cry, or was rude towards Annalise! He was an asshole, and she was an anti-bully ranger x) Yet, whenever it subdued, they were playing together a lot and getting into trouble together. Crow was very jealous when Maria decided to leave Cainhurst, like... I would not surprised of the 'straight up clinged to her leg and dragged after her across the floor' situation fdshhfd For people that fought a lot he felt only she truly understood him, and he never quite recovered from realisation that Maria might not really felt the same, even if she did love him too.
Elias was very gentle person when he was growing up, and could only really turn to Maria to hide from judgement for "shaming" his noble family. She was there for him during both of his most hardcore conflicts with Annalise (who was and is extremely hard to earn forgiveness from), and believed in him when he decided to become a warrior too. Annalise, like I said, Maria found a comfort in, lacking a mother figure and instead seeking a woman to turn to in older sisters figures. But also, Annalise gave her chills sometimes! She never dared to lie to her or break a promise to her- and she did see what happens on example of Elias. At the same time, Annalise was so reliable, someone Maria could share her problem with and just know that Annalise will help...

This is all for now! Obviously this is not all characters to cover; there are still Logarius, Izzy, Caryll (one more cousin, but known one), Micolash and Rom, and relatives in Cainhurst! I just wanted to answer the ask now but I am still cooking some headcanons because I figured I can't rush it and right ideas find me at their own pace :pensive: Still, thank you for letting me talk about it in detail!!

more fragments from Michael
I just stumbled on this interview of Michael:
youtube
circa sometime in the 2000s .
I appreciate the way he describes the depth and danger of the character and the play Hamlet; the idea of an ever-present ghost of Hamlet who is given life by each actor who plays him.
...
As I find these little fragments and share with the GO fam, I am not trying to be a Michael scholar; not at all. In fact, if I were doing this for independent scholarship, my subjects would first be Neil and Octavia and Ursula, since they are foundational from my early life to now, way before I knew of Michael or David.
but I have been in and out of a worryingly deep abyss, for a long time now. emerge then sucker punched down again and again.
I know in my scattered soul that making art is my surest way out. I see these incandescent creative artists as lamps on my own dark journey, lighting a way forward.
They will never know how grateful I am for what they share.
and so I pass it on.

Just felt like sharing my most recent arts and crafts project 😊
I decorated a lampshade with pages of my defective copy of Hamlet (it was one of the really small Folger’s editions and the middle 180 pages just fell out before I had even gotten to that point in the book). If anyone’s got any craft ideas involving the remaining pages let me know!
