Self-taught one work-in-progress at a time so that there鈥檚 some beginner stuff I don鈥檛 know and advanced stuff that I do know and I will forever be making silly beginner mistakes in complex projects that I鈥檒l probably never complete :)

I'd like to introduce to everyone this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).
Tumblr media
This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that's not all! Behold!
Tumblr media
You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!
Tumblr media
I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.
So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.

You know at first I didn't believe it when fiber artists on tumblr would tell me to be wary of the fiber art slippery slope. And yet. I hear the siren call of the spindle. Fellow crafters help me resist. Tie me to the fucking mast. Please.

Posting the final product one more time because I鈥檓 so proud of it! Taught myself crochet this summer with YouTube, then spent all of this fall making Persian Tiles during my down time at work (there鈥檚 a lot). Sized it up from an afghan to a queen size because 1) go big or go home 2) worsted weight acrylic yarn is dead cheap. Learned a lot! Also talked to so many people who saw me working on it and told me their own stories about crochet- old projects of their own that fell to the wayside, the blanket their grandma made. I got inspired to make this after I saw the pattern online, then spotted a finished one at the fair in the crafts barn. Felt like full circle when someone else told me they felt inspired to pick the craft back up!

Interested in cool cable knitting patterns?
I've made a site where you can make your own
I learned to knit a while ago specifically to make cool braid patterns with cable knitting and I'm also a web developer
So I made this
You can make a braid and it will create a cable knitting pattern out of it
Tumblr media
It starts with this here, you can change the size with the inputs above and when you hover over crossings you can click and it will change how it crosses (right over left, left over right, or parallel)
Tumblr media
Every time you do it updates this pattern down here that you can follow to knit that braid
There are notes and abbreviations listed on the site for the specifics
Please tag me if you make things with this I'm so proud of it :)

I am going to make this a separate post, since the other one got so long.
So, like I mentioned there, I sent my grandma's granny squares off to my Loose Ends "finisher" with the intent of giving my mother the blanket when it was complete. I had NO thoughts in my head at all for saving something for myself.
When I received the box in August with the completed blanket, it had two additional things in it. It had a letter and a bag. The bag had two and a half skeins of left over yarn (please peep the picture of all they yarn I sent this lady, I was SO surprised she was able to use so much of it!) my grandmother's crochet hook, and a single granny square. In the letter, my finisher, Katherine, wrote that she set aside one of the original squares my grandma made--she specifically said the one she guessed may have been one of the first--in order to put it in a central place in the finished blanket. But then she forgot about it when she went to put the blank together, so now there was one left over. She said she sent it along with the blanket, hoping it would still find a home.
So, like I said in my last post, I gathered up the blanket and brought it to my mom....but I kept that lone granny square for myself. I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it:

I bought this little shadow box on Amazon, pinned in the granny square, and added my grandma's hook. I plan on hanging it in my little crafting zone in my apartment 鉂わ笍
Just another reason why the Loose Ends Project has my heart in a chokehold. There was so much thought and kindness that went into what Katherine did--for both me and my mom.
