It’s taking a lot of effort to not block anyone tagging my art as q slur.
It sounds like a lot of you might might need to learn some queer history. Which is fine - there is no shame in learning our history. We don’t get taught it- you have to go and specifically look for it.
It’s also important to note- Every single lgbtqia+ community label has been thrown back at us as slur. There isn’t a single one that homophobic, transphobic people haven’t used in a derogatory way. If we collectively decided to call ourselves Humans as our only lgbtqia+ label - no doubt there would be hateful people screaming back at us. Those types of people hate us - and no matter how sanitized, and pure - and free from any stigma you present your queer self - they will still hate us.
Queer was strategically chosen as an umbrella term during the protests in the late 1980 & 90s. If you’re not aware of the AIDS crisis- please learn about it. It was brutal -and the disgusting response from the government, conservatives, religious extremists was - they were happy that it was happening. They let hundreds of thousands of queer people die because they thought we deserved it. It was a truly horrific medical emergency that was purposefully ignored for many years.
So “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re not going to disappear.” became one of the slogans people would yell during marches and protests.
Queer was chosen because it wasn’t sterilized, sanitized, it wasn’t an assimilated, quiet version of being lgbtqia+. It was fucking in your face queer.
You couldn’t ignore it- we weren’t going to hide away in shame, or keep things wrapped up in secret like previous generations. Homophobic , transphobic people had to deal with the fact that queer people existed- and would always exist & there was nothing they could do or say to change that.
Because that’s exactly what they wanted. They wanted assimilation, or total nonexistence of all queer people. And unfortunately they still do.
Which is why seeing “the q slur” is so messed up. It’s giving that sanitized, reagan administration evangelical morality - homophobic, transphobic people everything they had hoped for. A fear based response of - if I make make myself as palatable as possible will you finally respect me?
Here is an amazing photo by Dan Nicolette that I think encapsulates that idea of what queer meant. I’m not going disappear, make myself easier for you homophobes to digest.

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH, ALPHABET MAFIA
just a few reminders:
- first pride was a riot
- black & BIPOC queer people are the foundation of our entire nation and the global culture
- we owe most of our rights and progress to BIPOC trans women/femmes and different communities of lesbians, trans/gnc folks and elders.
- trans people have always existed, they are ancient and indigenous to many cultures and places and are SACRED.
- I’m glad you’re here and there is community out there for you, waiting with open arms. Don’t give up just yet, please.
- rainbow capitalism isn’t liberation
- we are all we have, be fucking better to each other
- lesbians have done so much for lgbtqia+ people and should maybe idk stop being erased for no reason
- biphobia is real and just bc your ex cheated on you doesn’t make it bi folks fault, you’re projecting babe
- being queer doesn’t dissolve white privilege, pls touch grass
- be safe at pride. they’re coming for us all and we need to protect ourselves.
- not everyone wants to use the word queer/dyke/fag etc. I’m glad you reclaimed the slurs used against you, me too, but not everyone wants to and you need to respect that. LGBTQIA+* exists for a reason.
- the black and brown belong on the flag.
- the A is for asexual/romantic or agender, not ally.
- get some pussy (or whatever you do (or don’t do)) and make space for joy! because black/queer joy is revolutionary and fucking righteous just as much as our anger is, too
- Juneteenth coming up too, issa parade in my city fr
- asexuals/aromantics belong at pride. Period. Full stop.
- safe sex is the best sex
- get tested!
- it’s okay to not watch the news. america is hell, go take a nap
- people 100% know themselves better than you ever will, people are who they say they are and you don’t get to decide that for them. respect pronouns, identity, etc. or argue w ya mama/god/someone else cause it ain’t finna be me ❤️
- you deserve relationships that feel safe and actually are safe. Don’t settle.
- learn your queer history. they won’t teach us. they took our elders from us.
- Black LGBTQIA+* history IS Black History.
- we all need to be thankful to the house mothers and the ballroom scene and those who gave us what we have now, regardless of who you are.
- don’t call yourself a stud if you’re not BLACK. wit a capital B and at least one BLACK parent.
- not everyone is out. happiest of pride month to y’all. you’re still gang and we love you just as much. 💗
- our collective liberation lies in the fact that we are all tied to each other. if you’re down for the gays but not the theys, you’re not as decolonized as you think you are.
- shout out to fanfiction writers who have been single-handedly providing queer art/content/representation for years while the industry continues to make a mockery of us or intentionally leave us out. one thing we gonna do is help someone find their queer awakening, and get that story right. love us 🤪 go team
- your life means something. it’s important beyond comprehension. you look good. your ass is fat (if you want it to be). get the mullet as a lil treat.
- LGBTQIA+* people across the board have ALWAYS existed in literally every culture and every continent (and Antarctica counts if you count the cute lil gay penguins😌). Don’t let them tell you different. We are not a “mInOrItY”, we have been MINORITIZED. we are not small, we are great and mighty and have ALWAYS been here. And we always will. We exist in the future just as we have existed in the past. We stand on the shoulders of MASSIVE collective ancestors. If that’s not an indication to keep going, keep fighting, keep laughing, dancing, voguing, and keep showing up authentically - then I don’t know what is.
- it’s gonna be ok baby. pinkie promise.

🏳️‍🌈 Moths and Butterflies — LadyAj_13 / @ladyaj-13
1.363 words / Harry x Louis
It seemed like such a good plan a week ago. It had seemed like fate, for the town’s Pride parade to fall at the very same time when work sent him there to charm some clients. Who was Louis, to sniff at a higher power? It was exciting, a week ago. Now he’s here though, in the thick of it, and he thought it would feel freeing but it doesn't. It just rams home how he doesn’t belong.
This is a lovely fic for anyone who has ever questioned whether they are queer enough to belong in the queer community. You are, and this fic will remind you of it whenever you need it.
🏳️‍🌈 Quite the Pickle — @lululawrence
1.455 words / Grimmy x Harry x Louis
Nick hated pickles. It was an entire thing for him and he used to get into arguments all the time when his mum insisted he could just remove them and the sandwich would be fine without them. She never seemed to understand. The flavor was still left behind because of the juices. The scent was still there. The pickle was never fully removed. Not successfully. And now one was sitting on the plate, almost touching his perfectly pickle free sandwich, all whilst leaking it’s flavor and scent all over his chips. Good thing there happened to be a pregnant man with a craving nearby.
An adorable, cozy meet-cute between a couple and a stranger, this fic has so much goodness in so few words. From the struggle of pregnancy cravings to the unexpected pleasure of finding people who will accept you as you are, it’s a fun little roller coaster you don’t want to miss.
🏳️‍🌈 Over The Heads Of The Crowd — DancingOnCapitals
3.232 words / Harry x Louis
Harry attends a fandriven LGBTQIA+ event to support the queer part of his favourite band's fandom and probably also some members of said band when he spots the most beautiful person he's ever seen.
Love at first sight it’s always nice, but gay love at first sight is something special in itself. A meet-cute fic where they share a bed... What else could you ask for?
🏳️‍🌈 Courted in Cabos — @alphalouis
5.511 words / Louis x Oli
Oli's spent his whole life with Louis Tomlinson. More accurately, he’s waited his whole life for Louis to pop the question. When Louis invites him to Los Cabos, he thinks this will be it. So he waits. And he waits. Eventually it becomes clear Louis won’t make the first move. He decides to take matters into his own hands.
Absolutely adorable! Friends pining on each other is always such a nice trope to read. Seeing the development of their relationship was really cute, and this fic is more than worth a shot, considering Niall’s special additions.
🏳️‍🌈 falling in love with the stable boy — @sup3rbloom
5.620 words / @1dreversebang / Harry x Louis
Louis is the son of King Tomlinson, and now that he's older, he's interested in learning horseback riding. King Tomlinson assigns Harry, the kingdom's stable boy, to train him. It's love at first sight for Louis, and this wouldn't be a problem if being gay wasn't wrong in the kingdom.
This fic is a little heartbreaking, considering how Louis' own family might reject him for something he doesn’t have a choice in, however it was extremely cute how Harry, Zayn and Liam were there to always protect Louis.
——
As always, support the authors by leaving kudos and comments! Happy reading!
Since it's Pride Month, we want to bring attention to our other three related tags and past recommendations:
COMING OUT;
GENDERQUEER;
LGBTQIA STORIES;
PRIDE REC
And to take the opportunity to mention that the @projectotb is back this year and also running a drabble fest, and give a shoutout to the @1dpridefest which is currently happening, so don't miss the chance and support all the amazing writers and creator participating!
If you love a fic that has gotten less love than you think it deserves, submit it to us so we can check it out and perhaps add it to one of our recs! — FYMHM xx

For reasons I’m not sure of (algorithms) all my social media is giving me A LOT of og 911 content. I don’t care for it but it keeps popping up. Apparently Buddie is definitely happening this season and who knows maybe it will but I do wonder if the reality would ever live up to the expectations. And on another note, apparently they are also (not Buddie, 2 other characters) getting a big wedding episode between two mains. Now I’m curious as to whether those 2 will have to “earn” their wedding like Tarlos did or if that only applies to the same sex couple. Yes, Tim Minear you’ve done a lot of great things for LoneStar but I’m still very upset we didn’t get a happy wedding. Those boys and the LGBTQIA+ community deserved something that was just pure celebration and I’ll be forever sad that that opportunity was missed. I don’t mind the Gabriel plot but I just wish it hadn’t happened before the wedding.
I have seen commentary from some fans who seem to think they’ll become canon this season but I remember fans were pretty sure it would happen last season two and then didn’t they both end up with new girlfriends? I have no skin in that game so I hope those fans get what they want! Being disappointed by a show you love is an awful feeling.
And I get that criticism for sure. I feel like the wedding itself was so joyous that it didn’t take away from the importance of the occasion for me, even with the bittersweet tinge. But I get it for sure if Gabriel’s death overshadowed it for some people.

FANE MASTER POST
youtube
[Status December 1st 2023. Issue 1 now available in digital and print-on-demand formats! www.FANEmag.com | Currently accepting submissions of all kinds for Issue 2.]
{Contributors/contributions per category for next issue: Art (0), Photography (0), Interviews (0), Music Reviews (0), Print (0), Articles (0), Random (0), Letters (0)}
FANE is a digital & print zine with the intent to lift up artists of all kinds and expose them to new audiences. In every issue I hope to feature Musicians, Photographers, Illustrators, Poets, Painters, etc., along with life testimonials from marginalized peoples (are you a gender non conforming POC in the Crust Punk scene? I wanna know what that’s like. Are you transitioning in a rural area and want to share your experience? I want to help you do that. Do you love transgressive writing and like picking it apart? I wanna read those book reviews.). I am actively seeking out creatives in the LGBTQIA+ community who make the kinds of works that don’t get the attention or respect of mainstream queer culture. That said, FANE is all encompassing and we welcome submissions from peoples of all different walks of life (from CisHet to TransQueer, and everything before, in between, and after).
FANE is 100% volunteer. Everyone involved is donating their time and content. The digital version of the zine is available completely free. The print version will full color A4 Print-on-Demand by Lulu.com Any kind of profits made or donations received will go towards building an online presence, securing future hosting/domain related fees, etc.
Examples of what we’re looking for:
Music Reviews, Live Show Reports, Photography, Painting, interviews (both interviewers and those willing to be interviewed), indie film makers, queer activists/artists, anything that defies convention, short stories, poetry, anyone willing to share honestly their struggles with mental health or other health issues, anyone into body modification, anyone with an unconventional body structure comfortable showing their body and discussing it, anyone willing to share terrifying personal experiences they’ve overcome, comedic works as prose or illustration, sex workers willing to share what their lives are like. Anything & anyone who deserves their “15 minutes” currently denied by surface culture. Contributions don’t have to be small, and you don’t have to do any page layout/framing (we can set up the pages from your content/files). ‪Aesthetic: glitchy, dark, dusty, ash, noise, industrial, goth, experimental electronics, metal, punk, esoterica…‬
Examples of what we’re NOT looking for:
Pornography, edgelord shit for the sake of edgelord shit, right wing/conservative bullshit, Racists, animal cruelty, white nationalist propaganda, Nazi sympathizers, homophobes, transphobes, sexists, and other generally shitty human garbage. This doesn’t mean journalistic articles about such things can’t find inclusion, just that I don’t want to print the actual things themselves. ‪For legal reasons, we’re also not accepting fandom art, fan fiction, etc. We respect those of you who create such things, it’s just they’re not a good fit for us.‬
All submissions to FANE must be your original work or works you have the legal right to use. When submitting, you give FANE the right to reproduce your material in perpetuity within the context of magazine print runs, website/blog postings, publishing collected editions of the zine, etc. (we’re not going to sell your works as prints or shirts or mugs or any kind of similar shenanigans). You are NOT giving us exclusive rights to anything, and your works will always be yours to do with as you wish outside of the zine.
No matter what you’re submitting, we ask everyone for a photo of themselves in the portrait orientation. If you are uncomfortable sharing a photo of yourself, we can go with an artistic interpretation or simply a “No Photo Available” generic pic. There’s also a short questionnaire. Any question you don’t want to answer, you can put “No Comment” or something sassy, etc. The Bio bit should only be about a paragraph (2-5 sentences).
Name:
Age:
Pronouns:
Gender:
Location:
Primary Medium:
Other Mediums:
Bio:
Links:
For each visual artist that has contributed so far, I’ve created a Bio page for the issue. I don’t know how that will translate to written works (would make sense for poetry submissions, or long journalistic works, but probably not for short reviews, know what I mean?), but better to have the info/pic and not need it than the other way around.
Please make sure to include a direct link, or links, to your work. You can also send files via email, but keep in mind we’re not touching anything that looks shady (Archives, Executables, etc). Also be sure to tell us what it is we should be looking at, and what your contribution idea is (Example: Photographer who provides links to their photos and states they want to share new works for the zine.)
Questions? Suggestions? Contributions? You can contact me here on tumblr or use FANEmag at gmail. I’m working on other communication methods as well, but I’m an Elder Millennial so please be patient with me :)
Feel free to reblog/spread far & wide.
Here are some visuals from Issue 1 to give you an idea of what the overall “vibe” of the zine is. The full issue can be downloaded for free from FANEmag.com

Asked & Answered:
* Hey! What does the name FANE mean/stand for?
It’s a noun. It means a church or temple. I’m not a religious person, but the most spiritual I feel is when I’m submersed in the arts, hence the name choice. Major world religions aren’t exactly friendly to the LGBTQIA+ community, so the zine, in my head at least, is an alternate experience where people can find community, inspiration, and acceptance.
I’m a self deprecating sarcastic asshat too, so the fact it rhymes with “feign” as in “to feign interest in this boring zine” is absolutely intentional. As is the fact that it’s a four letter “F” word :)
* Who are you?
Hi, my name’s Rob, and I’m an alcoholic (recovering). I’m a married cisgendered gay white male who uses he/him pronouns living on the East Coast USA. I’m medicated for anxiety and depression, and I believe I may have undiagnosed ADHD and/or ASD. I’m an amateur creative that’s been doing the best I can for the last 30 or so years with zero professional training. I’ve put out a good chunk of experimental music, some of which is still available online (“Vermilion Sky” is my best if you go looking). I’ve also collaborated with other musicians, labels, etc. I’m currently working on histological and minimal photography, as well as graphic design and illustration (digital).

Didn't want to derail a post so I'm making my own.
I came across a post talking about how we're not gonna get rid of the radfems until we give up "all cis men are evil" because gender essentialism is brain rot. Which is completely and totally true.
AND ALSO
I can't believe I have to fucking say this, but we need to give up "all cis men are evil" because cis men are... also people??? I understand that the people who have hurt women and the LGBTQIA+ community are white straight cis men, but that doesn't make them inherently evil or inhuman. It is dehumanizing to label an entire category of people as evil. I don't care if they have privilege, they still deserve to be treated as human beings. Cuz surprise, ALL PEOPLE should be treated like people and have the right to not be told that they're scum constantly.
And fuck it, hot take: it fucking sucks to be told you're evil for shit you can't change, no matter who you are. It's not ok to call all gays evil, or all black people evil, or all trans people evil, or all women evil. It's NOT OK to call all straight white cis men evil either.
And you know what? If I was called evil all day every day online and out in the real world by people who claim to be "liberal" and "feminist," I might get angry, or at the very least depressed. When you are in a heightened state of emotion, you are vulnerable to manipulation. If some asshole is like "hey I get it, *those people* hates me too, they're all stupid," men, especially young men who are depressed and angry, might follow them into whatever stupid shit they're doing. That's how Andrew Tate has as big a following as he has.
TLDR: Men need to do better, AND communities that push for acceptance and change NEED to drop the "all cis men" are evil thing. Those things aren't mutually exclusive!
We need to treat men like real human people.
Otherwise what the fuck are we even doing here.

can I say something controversial after we just got done celebrating miles and Alex reuniting?
I think Milex is a cute ship, it is, they are an adorable pair. their chemistry is very sweet and they are like soulmates you can tell, be that platonic or not in y'alls opinions. I personally don't ship it (always been a mattlex girly myself, platonically talking). I do feel at times y'all do focus on the wrong thing with Miles and Alex. some of you lot love defending Miles and how he doesn't deserve to just be associated with Alex but please and I beg you, tell me truthfully you know Miles from his solo work and not from TLSP. there's few of us, I think Miles is great and his music is good, I saw him before AM live FFS but no I wouldn't know Miles without Alex. It's just a thing that will always exist and it's unfortunate I know but it's true. I also think documenting and cherry picking at specific moments that have literally no correlation at all to milex romantic moments and making them oddly sexual is fucking odd. like I'll give you the d, I wish you would: that's an innuendo, that's funny and you can make that sexual cuz they did. they act like an old married couple at times. the lentils joke about their bad habits for example, it's cute and domestic. it's fic material. I understand that, trust me but like sometimes they are just on coke and giggling like little boys over like bringing bread and crumpets to the studio and that's not an allegory for fucking each other (an actual real post someone made). please it's odd and fetishism of two men who are straight. I understand that being gay is still a taboo subject for some people from more oppressive countries and maybe at 14 when you found AM, milex was your first introduction to shipping culture and men being shipped together, that would be exciting to you. However the nuances of that is that it can cross a line to a degree where you aren't respecting the two real people. I was in the Dan and Phil fandom before they came out and we had an era called 2012 where Dan especially was on the defense constantly to a point where it was a taboo to us to talk about but through time, that defense became more empathetic with them coming out. we all grew up and that behaviour from when we were kids was not ok anymore and that frustration was valid. I have many straight friends who have felt that pressure to be part of the LGBT community in order to not be shamed and on the flip side, I don't even need to tell you how hard it is still for lgbtqia people to want to hide in the closet with all the problems we still as a society have to face.
what I'm trying to say is, these are straight men and it's ok for straight men to be affectionate with their friends, I know it may still be frowned upon in some cultures but we wouldn't have am without a close bond between the lads. we wouldn't have TLSP without miles and Alex being best friends. i don't think milex is wrong, plz do what you want, draw your porn art if you want, write fics upon fics but plz just think about why this makes you so happy and understand the true consequences on what you say because you could be upsetting the gay community around you by being elated that miles can kiss his friend on the cheek. let boys love each other platonically or not, it doesn't matter. If Alex or Miles came out tomorrow, I'd support them, it's just something to think about.
Plus it's ok for teenagers and younger people to see what the boys do and want that, that's valid and I hope you have fun. There's a point where you may realise that something you said was a kid that you don't agree with and that's part of growing up, I know (hence the dnp rant). I see this now as an adult and think of that as crossing a line by prying at someone's sexuality cuz that's not mine to know and I don't know that person in real life. However if you are like a long time monkeys fan in your late 20s, early 30s, please consider what you're doing and re-evaluate what this means to you because maybe it's not just Alex and Miles that make you feel this way and that's not healthy: that's a parasocial relationship you've held for so long you don't know any different.

URGENT EMERGENCY TRANS BOY IN DANGER OF BEING ON THE STREET
I am so, so sorry for having to do this but things have escalated and now since we are still without electric even though we've been desperately trying and trying to raise the money our landlord wants us out. We received a paper today that is very clearly targeting us and throwing out every accusation possible when we told everyone repeatedly we could not pay the bill in a timely manner. We were declined for every source of public help. They're giving us until July 7th to be out. I have never been in this situation in all my life and genuinely don't know what to do. I feel sick to my stomach thinking about Kokichi having to spend his 5th birthday at the humane society because we're out on the street. I live in the DMV area if anyone would be willing to help. I have a list of numbers I need to call tomorrow but aside from that I'm trying my best to stay calm and figure out a plan of action. I'm so sorry for having to do this. The system sucks and we did nothing to deserve this but be negatively impacted by the pandemic. I don't want to lose my son, he's all I have. Please help
The title in caps is because I'm hoping the lgbtqia+ community sees this and they can help. This isn't how I should be spending pride.

All or Nothing: Loveless
I just finished Loveless by Alice Oseman. I have some thoughts.
Tumblr media
Here there be spoilers!
Alice Oseman is a gift to LGBTQIA+ literature. She has mastered the art of Jane Austen: writing a book that apparently has very little plot, but is actually a depiction of some of the most important facets of every day life. Her most famous contribution to the canon, Heartstopper, is light, bright, and sparkling in tone. With Loveless, Oseman adds a more nuanced piece of work to her world.
The novel centers around Georgia Warr, a rising first year student at university who is desperate to star in her own romantic love story. She’s imbibed all the intoxicating tropes of allonormative fiction: she knows every meet cute, every slow burn, every AU under the sun. She’s studied up, and she’s ready to go. The problem is that when she tries to take it from fantasy to reality, she finds that she has zero sexual or romantic chemistry with anyone. Worse still, she’s repelled by everyone she tries with. Over the course of many failed experiments, and through an introduction to a lovely friend, Georgia must come to terms with her reality: she cannot find that fabled romantic love story with one person. She’s aromantic asexual.
Asexuality, let alone aromanticism, is a rare study in contemporary fiction. By placing Georgia’s self-discovery at the heart of the novel, Alice Oseman has provided a novelty to a community that rarely finds itself directly addressed. This is a new kind of coming out, and coming to terms, story: what does life look like when your relationships fit no kind of translatable norm?
The answer provided to us is that Georgia is able to find beautiful, true love stories with her friends. As her new roommate, pansexual Rooney Bach declares to her: “I feel at home around you in a way I have never felt in my fucking life. And maybe most people would look at us and think we're just friends, or whatever, but I know that it's just...so much more than that. You fucking saved me, I swear to God.”
Because whether we are aromantic or alloromantic, love comes in life in so many different forms. Just because society has prioritized one expression does not mean the others are less worthy.
Just as Georgia must come to grips with how she can give and receive love, so must the others in her life. Some people have been disquieted by the fact that the title of the novel is Loveless, fearing that it represents yet another jab at people on the aroace spectrum. I would argue that the title is, quietly, more nuanced than that: the majority of the rest of the characters may be alloromantic, but that doesn’t mean that they rest easy with the knowledge they are lovable.
Georgia’s friend Pip is an out-and-proud lesbian. But multiple times in the novel, Pip declares that she’s destined to be forever alone. Having been treated as a ‘gay experiment’ in the past, Pip believes she isn’t worthy of anything else. Georgia’s second friend Jason, apparently a straight man, has endured bullying in his life. Because that bullying centered around his being undesirable and unlovable, Jason rushed into romance and dating with the wrong people because he believed that it was his only shot and he didn’t deserve to hold out to be treated well. Newly discovered pansexual Rooney has embraced free sexuality and flirtation, but for her they don’t equate to love. She believes she deserves to be punished for having fallen in love with the wrong person, causing her to have made years’ worth of bad choices and sacrificed healthier friendships.
I think what this book is all about is really that we all struggle with what it means to love. Love comes in so many forms, and those forms shouldn’t be discounted just because they don’t fit preconceived notions. Love in all its forms is so rare in this world. When it comes our way, we need to keep eyes, arms, and heart open. Don’t miss it.
To my asexual, aromantic, or even allo family who dread feeling forever alone: I implore you to stop and ask yourself where you find love in this world. I have had days where I didn’t want to live anymore, but I asked myself who would take care of my dog if I wasn’t here? So, I decided it was worth sticking around a little longer. Calmer reflection reminded me of parents who try their best. Of friends who chose me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Of mentors who pushed me forward. Of kids in my classroom who gave me unexpected hugs and told me I was their favorite teacher.
Sometimes, love feels like an all or nothing affair. Either we’re the heroes of some grand romance or we’re the also-rans. But the reality is so much different. Love can be all around us. If we don’t stop and look around once in a while, we might miss it.

🥺
🥺 what’s a truly underrated book/series you recommend and wish the whole world would read? All of these books are ones that either never won awards, or are not well known -- as in if I mention them, people give me blank looks or show no recognition of the series or author.
A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers
Young Wizards Series by Diane Duane
The Circle of Magic, The Circle Opens, and Will of Empress by Tamora Pierce
Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy: Annihilation; Authority; Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer
The Species Imperative Trilogy by Julie Czerneda
Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor
Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection edited by Hope Nicholson
A Psalm for the Wild Built is a novella and about a nonbinary monk who travels the countryside and serves tea to people, while listening to their troubles. Except they decide they need to go into the wilds, but during their journey, they encounter the first robot humans have seen in over two hundred years. Their friendship is adorable. It's a solarpunk world, and it's message of hope is everything. I adored it, and I wished I lived in this world honestly.
____ The Young Wizards series started in the 90s actually. I was a kid when I read the first book: So You Want To Be A Wizard. I grew up reading these books, and so I never got into Harry Potter. Mostly because when I tried Harry Potter, it felt like a poor shadow of the Young Wizards series. So I abandoned Harry Potter to continue to read Young Wizards. Honestly, I adored Nita and Kit and their fantastical adventures. @dianeduane is a master at twists and turns, and the plots of Young Wizards goes from localized problems to multi-universe problems the young wizards must rush to solve. I can't recommend it enough. Seriously, I want more people reading Young Wizards so I can talk to more folks about it. So that we can have some fanfiction for it, so that we can have more fanart. It deserves so much more attention, plus the author is super awesome and supportive for LGBTQIA folks! I'll sound the drum on this series forever. lol
____ Another series that I grew up with that I wish more people knew about is The Circle of Magic, The Circle Opens, and Will of Empress by Tamora Pierce. Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar were my found family, comfort characters, and their teachers were so gay (the two lesbian teachers were together actually). The themes explored were complex and fascinating. Pierce is more known for her Alanna series, which I think isn't as good as her Circle of Magic series honestly. This is my comfort series that I've read a bazillion times.
____
Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy: Annihilation; Authority; Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer is very hard to describe. I know a movie was made of the first book -- Annihilation, but the movie really doesn't capture the true weirdness of this series. Nor the rather hopeful if bizarre ending. I keep going back to re-read this series because it's prose, its worldbuilding, how the land itself becomes a character is so utterly fascinating. I want more people to read the books so I can talk to them about it!!
____ The Species Imperative Trilogy by Julie Czerneda is one of my favorite trilogies of all time. It's not well known at all, which makes me sad. Julie Czerneda is a master at crafting alien species. The story is about a salmon researcher that ends up on an investigation about an alien species that may or may not be eating entire planets of aliens -- it's a conspiracy that spans the galaxy. I couldn't put it down, and I keep going back to it because its themes are fascinating.
___
Nnedi Okorafor is more well known for her Akata Witch series (I highly recommend) or her Binti series (also highly recommend). However, her Lagoon really by far one of her best I think. It's the story of first contact with aliens, but it's also an exploration of identity, liberation, community, and how we react to change and difference. It has a very diverse cast including well-written trans characters, and I wish more folks read it (beyond scholars) so I can chat about it!
___
Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection edited by Hope Nicholson is a kickstarter I did randomly, and I'm so glad I did. I have three in this collection, and it's comics by Native American artists. They are all fantastic and I don't even know where to begin. There's just so many good stories in it, and I wish more people knew of this collection and would read it. It explores identity, intergenerational trauma, healing, liberation, and community. One of the best comic anthologies I've ever read.
____
I'll stop there. Mostly because I'm getting tired and I know the question only asked for one. But I can't choose! These are all so good, and I highly recommend them all! So thank you for asking. :)

FANE MASTER POST
(Original post about this permalink here)
[Status August 3rd 2023: I have roughly 39 pages in various states of design/completeness.]
{Contributors/contributions per category for current issue: Art (2), Photography (0), Interviews (1), Music (1), Print (0), Articles (0), Random (1), Letters (0)}
The digital version of the zine will be available completely free. The print version will be a lo-fi print-on-demand option priced to cover cost. Any kind of profits made or donations received will go towards building an online presence for the zine and further promoting the zine.
All submissions to FANE must be your original work or works you have the legal right to use. When submitting, you give FANE the right to reproduce your material in perpetuity within the context of zine print runs, website/blog postings, publishing collected editions of the zine, etc. (we’re not going to sell your works as prints or shirts or mugs or any kind of similar shenanigans). You are NOT giving us exclusive rights to anything, and your works will always be yours to do with as you wish outside of the zine.
As of writing this, the print edition will be black & white only (to keep price as low as possible, and honor xerox culture), but the digital edition will be full color. Please keep this in mind when choosing any visuals you may want to include. I think I can get the price down to $4 for b&w, but color would be $8 or $9 just in cost which I feel is a lot to ask (maybe I’m wrong). The goal here is simply to make it as accessible as possible.
Questions? Suggestions? Contributions? You can contact me here on tumblr or use FANEmag at gmail. I’m working on other communication methods as well, but I’m an Elder Millennial so please be patient with me :)
Feel free to reblog/spread far & wide.
Here are some visuals to give you an idea of what the overall “vibe” of the zine is. Nothing here is final… it’s all in progress/template/mock-up type stuff. I will update this post with changes, additions, etc.

I’m again tagging creatives at random. Don’t feel obligated to participate, but obviously I’d love to have ya:
@annaxmalina @ad-wills @blaue3 @conkerart @equinoxes @ericpenington @florian-93 @ghostribbons @jogoraz @justizpalast @rnarccus @rmtrl @st-nothing
Asked & Answered
Hey! What does the name FANE mean/stand for?
It’s a noun. It means a church or temple. I’m not a religious person, but the most spiritual I feel is when I’m submersed in the arts, hence the name choice. Major world religions aren’t exactly friendly to the LGBTQAI+ community, so the zine, in my head at least, is an alternate experience where people can find community, inspiration, and acceptance.
I’m a self deprecating sarcastic asshat too, so the fact it rhymes with “feign” as in “to feign interest in this boring zine” is absolutely intentional. As is the fact that it’s a four letter “F” word :)

Eventually! First we need to get federally recognized as a religion and are working towards that now!

We have a donation link in the website and all donations will be used to create promotional material, start services for LGBT youth, and to cover any future legal fees. We also have a cashapp if that is easier: $churchPrismaticlight
✨ Is this more of a social community or is it a deeply religious/spiritual faith?
Prismatism is as religious/spiritual as you need it to be in your life. If you simply need a loving, supporting community then that is what it is. If you want to dive in an truly embrace the Tenets, then that is what it is.
✨ Will there ever be in person services?
We sure hope so! We’d love to be able to grow enough to have physical building where we could bring communities together and offer services and resources.
✨ Can I promote my GoFundMe within the community? Will the church publicly promote my GoFundMe?
Unfortunately at this time, we do not allow the self-promotion of GoFundMe (or similar) campaigns within this community. Nor will the church promote GoFundMe (or similar) campaigns on your behalf. It is our hope that this will change in the future, but for the time being we cannot allow it.

Tony Dungy Apology
There is transphobia and hatred of LGBTQ in his original. For that reason it has to go below the “read more line” Please preserve your mental health.
Tumblr media
Original tweet text That’s nothing. Some school districts are putting litter boxes in the school bathrooms for the students who identify as cats. Very important to address every student’s needs.
9:38 1/18/23
This assertion has been debunked
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/misinformation/urban-myth-litter-boxes-schools-became-gop-talking-point-rcna51439

Apology tweet:
Tumblr media
Text of apology tweet:
I saw a tweet yesterday and I responded to it in the wrong way. As a Christian I should speak in love and ways that are caring and helpful. I failed to do that and I am deeply sorry.
1. What is he sorry for? 0 No idea. I had to go digging for the original text.
2. Who is he sorry to? 0. No idea who he is sorry to.
3. Why was it wrong? 0 No idea why it was wrong.
4. How would he fix it and not do it again in the future? 0 No explanation of this.
5. Accept full responsibility? .1? But I’m more likely to give him zero. 0
6. Make reparations? 0 God is not the people you hurt, and the Bible said to try to make amends to the people you hurt.
Deductions:
- Appealing to God -1. What does God have to do with the people you hurt?
https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-apologizing.html
God would not support you doing this.
Rating: Non apology -1.
Rewrite of apology: While the original non-apology is shorter than most, I think it’s important to think about scraping it and starting through each of the steps.
I falsely stated that children identify as kittens and schools are putting litter boxes in bathrooms. This is completely false and has been debunked. I realize now this is an anti-LGBTQIA statement and an urban legend, which deeply hurts that community. But it also hurts school teachers and the original children this accusation was made about.
In order to make amends, I have posted the corrections to the original statement in the thread below, and will dedicate X amount to the Trevor Project specifically aimed towards education and Education initiatives to help teachers https://www.donorschoose.org/ in X amount.
I deeply apologize to the LGBTQIA community and teachers for the hurt I have caused.
If he insists on an appeal to God... then it should go something like this:
I have also disappointed my fellow Christians as we are taught to apologize properly and talk with love and understanding. I ask for forgiveness from God, but understand I do not always deserve it from the people I’ve hurt and in this case, school teachers, children, and the LGBTQIA community.
But this should not be in lieu of the former proper apology and making amends.
Note:
Shortest non-apology on the blog so far.

I almost finished All the Mother's Rage and my god white women even while writing about their own experiences, claiming to dispel the myth of uneven parental load, have to make sure the patriarchal system they feel they owe has been thoroughly for validation of their femininity.
She ends the book thanking her husband as a muse lol and adds he's also something more. Ummm
Also thanks her parents for enduring their marriage???
Fills the book with concrete examples and claiming that men need to be responsible yet never, never explicitly says these men are doing this purposely in the examples she states (just that they don't seem to know what they are doing, mystifying lol)
Of course, has her casual racist moment lamenting if Michelle Obama eventually had to cave whats the hope for the rest of us? Yawn. Funny, she noted that Black women and men tend to be more honest about the state of heteronormativity and went on to prove that with her book which is well researched but still maintains the tone of one of the books she criticizes (Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus).
The entire book is tainted with wishy-washy, rose coloured glasses that stems from women dissociating from their own experiences, yet the book only touches on how men dissociate in their relationships with their wives??? The book is about how women's humanity is ignored and debased and yet, women's actual feelings and in depth of what the causes of this stress is left untouched and the book ends as it began.
She states its a marker of a failing patriarchal society that doesnt support women if the birth rates are declining, massive yikes. Sorry, even in a world where you have an amazing husband and all the community support, you will struggle with more than 3 kids. That's just reality because raising a child and actually devoting energy to them being the best they can be is time and energy consuming and we are all limited in what we have to give while also supporting ourselves.
Most parents are attending to their basic needs and ensuring their are a productive citizen (bless those trying to work around that and provide more in a society that hates children) but doing this while also growing as an adult into the versions of you that deserve to explore cant be done while attending to a small colony of children. And in a world where women have the support and aren't coerced into having kids, families will be smaller as some wont have kids and others will have the number of kids they are comfortable supporting.
One reviewer complained the book offered no solutions and then added that its good because her husband is perfect so she doesnt need it? wtf
Another reviewer on Amazon, gave this book 5 stars and posted a picture of her attending to the baby while her husband ignores her and plays video games. Sigh.
Totally understand why Jane Ward said this book was depressing, though she was likely speaking to the stats and overwhelming evidence of parental load not shifting since the 80's. But I think its also how deeply ingrained suffering and sacrifice and ensuring the status quo isnt in anyway upended in a book that's suppose to bring illumination.
I've struggled endlessly why it seems like an Herculean task to at least make more cis women open to the journey of questioning/reorganizing/recreating their identities and this book makes it abundantly clear that for many, doing this is tantamount to forsaking their humanity, as it has been moralized to being a good girl so deeply.
Among my close group of friends, I'm the only lgbtqia person and on top of that the only who is openly gender questioning, they are all amazing and supportive but again maybe I can relieve myself of the need to actively intervene (they do listen to me and are making changes which is at least good), I will love and support from afar while not getting entangled in the heteronormative death drive that permeates most relationships. Its much deeper than just doing that, there are complex neurological patterns, trauma, background, relationship with their bodies and an acceptance of a new world view required to move past this.
For myself, I'm going to stick to primarily reading transformative works from people of colour (as too many white people, particularly white women wont give this movement the depth and nuance it deserves, as they strongly believe they benefit from it) and keep moving forward.

*****DOCTOR STRANGE SPOILERS AHEAD****
CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT HOW ANTI PAGAN THIS FUCKING MOVIE WAS?!
While I liked the fact that it did have LGBTQIA representation (for a single freaking second in the entire movie), everything else was awful, insulting, and yes I'm going to say it, DISCRIMINATORY TOWARDS WITCHES, WICCANS AND THE ENTIRE PAGAN COMMUNITY.
This film was absolutely disgusting. I am a real witch, an actual pagan witch who worships the old gods and uses Magick on a daily basis. And the way that marvel is giving into the hatred of my people is absolutely unforgivable.
First of all and most of all, referring to the word "witch" as another synonym for monster. SERIOUSLY?! This is not the sixteenth or seventeenth century, not Salem. That term should be banned by now as discrimination. Let me tell you something. I'm not a monster, and my religion is not an insult.
Or let's talk about the fact that they portrayed those who practiced witchcraft as being haunted and tormented by demons. THE FUCK. That's exactly something I would expect from some hot headed Catholic priest egging his congregation on, not MARVEL.
Or the fact that Wanda became a MURDERER because she practiced spells. That she was somehow tainted and lost her way.
Or the fact that Billy and Tommy screamed "it's a WITCH!" When she crossed into another universe.
Or the fact that "witchcraft" according to them is worse than Dr. Strange, who practiced Eastern witchcraft. All of it is Magick, Dr. Strange just got it from Sanskrit and Wanda got it from Nordic runes. ITS THE SAME. I practice dream walking or the actual term for it ASTRAL PROJECTION on a daily basis. I studied in both forms, and Magick methods around the world to become a healer. Tarot cards contain both "Dr Strange type" and "Wanda type" Magick.
Or the fact that they gave into the trope that witches kill children. They might as well have painted Wanda green and have her say "I'll get you my pretty!"
Or the fact that both Wanda and Loki have suffered tremendously for seemingly no particular reason, but they both have one thing in common...they're both witches. Loki is a witch as well, because he too specializes in Magick. Males can be termed as Witches and I have a number of good friends who are male witches. It makes me think that Marvel is giving a message that we deserve that kind of hell.
And furthermore, I would like to also point out that this will only put fuel on the fire for those who already hate us. I'll face discrimination because of this movie. I wear my pentacle everywhere. Coming out of it last night I was getting murderous looks and people were glaring and whispering among themselves, keeping their children away from me. I know I'm also going to face it at work now because everybody knows I'm a witch. Marvel, what have you done.
In conclusion, I think marvel is not only never going to give long term LGBTQIA screen time but they also based on their treatment of my kind they are anti pagan and might as well be puritans at Salem.
I AM NOT EVIL
I DON'T HURT CHILDREN
I DON'T HURT LIVING THINGS
I AM NOT A MONSTER
FUCK YOU MARVEL....FUCK YOU.
