There are certain kinds of deaths that one should not be expected to relive, certain kinds of connections so deep that when they are broken, you feel the snap of the link inside you.

Books read in 2024: ANNIHILATION by Jeff VanderMeer
Nothing that lived and breathed was truly objective—even in a vacuum, even if all that possessed the brain was a self-immolating desire for the truth.

Contemporary weird fiction reading list
A chart of New Weird books and other bizarre, unsettling, and uncanny literature published in the last 30 years or so. This is a follow-up to my previous chart of classic weird fiction and another selection from my list of over 200 works of weird literature.

“The effect of this cannot be understood without being there. The beauty of it cannot be understood, either, and when you see beauty in desolation it changes something inside you. Desolation tries to colonize you.”
— 📚Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer // 🎞 Annihilation, Alex Garland (2018)
Trying to read more fiction and the Autism and Queerness and Transcendent nature of these books truly has me in a chokehold. Like there’s something so liberating in The Weird, the eco and the body horror, the undefinable, The transcendent nature of area x ugh

there's this passage in annihilation where the biologist dissociates and depersonalises as she's observing this lake ecosystem and really my best experiences observing nature or even waiting while birdwatching have kind of felt exactly that. i have genuinely started to think of reading that passage for the first time when i want to access that feeling quickly.
