If you liked Camp Damascus, try Hell Followed With Us
and vice versa!
Tumblr media
There's a lot to love in both Camp Damascus by @drchucktingle and Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White. As horror novels about queer youth with, shall we say, complicated relationships with religion, they have a lot in common - if you liked one you very well may like the other. Let's take a closer look.
Characters:
Both books feature queer, autistic youth fighting back. The characters are trying to survive in a world created for them by abusive adults and religious institutions that hold power over them.
In Camp Damascus we follow Rose (autistic, lesbian). In Hell Followed With Us we follow Benji (neurodivergent, trans) and Nick (autistic, gay).
Genre:
Both books are horror, but with two distinct flavors. Camp Damascus has more of a creepy factor, while Hell Followed With Us leans more toward gore. In Camp there is some mystery to the evil, but in Hell the evil has a name, a face, an address - and a to-do list.
Both books deal with Christian cults and the horrors of indoctrination. They deal with the characters' complicated relationships to Christianity as an institution and God as a concept. They also both quote Christian scripture heavily.
Vibes:
While both books are horror, they do feel very different, largely because the primary emotion that drives each story is different. In Camp Damascus, it's love. In Hell Followed With Us, it's rage. You'll certainly find both emotions in certain quantities in either novel, but what they primarily put forward distinctly changes the vibe of both books.
-
So there you have it! Two fantastic reads in close thematic conversation with each other - but still quite distinct. If either sounds good to you, do yourself a favor and check out both today!

Like Real People Do Giveaway!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you want a free signed (by both me and Deacon!) copy of LRPD shipped straight to your door? Of course you do.
Rules for entry: 1. Must be following me 2. Like this post 3. Share this post
Closes October 1 midnight. Winner to be announced October 3rd! I'm doing a separate giveaway on Instagram if you want to double your chances. :)
The Blurb:
Nineteen-year-old hockey phenom Alexander Price is the youngest-ever captain in the NHL. With a polarizing social media presence and a predilection for dirty play, he typifies the stereotype of young, out-of-control athlete. But away from the cameras, Alex is a kid with an anxiety disorder and the expectations of an expansion franchise on his shoulders. And maybe he tries too hard to fit the part of asshole playboy, but it’s better than the alternative; in his line of work, gay is the punchline of an insult, not something he can be.
Eighteen-year-old vlogger Elijah Rodriguez is a freshman in college recovering from an injury that derailed his Olympic figure-skating dreams. Mixed-race, disabled, and out of the closet since he was fourteen, Eli is unapologetically himself. He has no qualms about voicing his disapproval of celebrity jocks who make homophobic jokes on Twitter and park their flashy cars in the handicapped spaces outside of ice rinks.
After an antagonistic introduction, Alex and Eli’s inexplicable friendship both baffles and charms the internet. But navigating relationships is hard enough for normal teenagers. It’s a lot harder when the world—much of it disapproving—is watching you fall in love with your best friend.
Also if you don't want to let fate decide your ability to own a copy, you can find them on Amazon any of these ebook retailers or in print at your favorite bookstore nationwide!

OUT NOW: REAL JOBS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's the day - the queer artist flatshare book is finally, officially, released and out in the world.
Since I already did the synopsis thing for my first announcement, I'm going to do this one for the laundry list book pitch enthusiasts.
Real Jobs is the book for you if you
are, have been, or aspire to be a starving artist of any kind
would like to read more books that are set in neither the US nor UK
like books with all-queer casts
like books with all-queer casts that are not about being queer
are in your 20s and stressed about it
have a real job
wish you didn't
like strange chapter titles
are an enthusiast of lesbians in not-romantic-not-platonic-but-a-secret-third-thing relationships
are an enthusiast of distressed bisexual men
are forever furious about the New Adult genre being declared dead
would like to give an indie author a crisp 1 buck in royalties
would like to give me a little kiss
If any of these apply to you, you should consider grabbing this book.
You can go to any of the sites here and pick up an ebook.
You can go to Barnes and Noble, Blackwells, Amazon, or most other online book retailers and pick up a paperback.
You can go to your local book store and ask them to order it for you. (Bonus points)
If you want to read it but can't afford it, you can ask me for a PDF and I will send it to you. (Yes, really)
If you're on the fence, you can read the first six chapters here.
Special thanks to @/0hlee on Twitter for the cover art, @cupidle for the promo art, @nicosraf for inspiring me to give selfpub another shot, and you if you get it 🫵

Who is your favorite anti-hero?
I’m not 100% sure you can call him an anti-hero, but Damien is one of my favorite misunderstood characters. He wants so badly to belong, but his power of suggestion leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to doing the right thing. I don’t want to spoil anything, but after reading A Neon Darkness by @laurenshippen I totally understand where Damien is coming from in the Bright Sessions podcast and why he does the things that he does. My heart really goes out to him and I’m so glad Lauren gave us a little more of his story.
If you’re into fiction podcasts and audio dramas at all, I highly recommend giving @thebrightsessions a go. It’s basically like what would happen if the X-Men were in therapy dealing with their trauma instead of saving the world? It’s so good! If you’re not into podcasts, there are three books set in the world: The Infinite Noise (follows Caleb and Adam), A Neon Darkness (follows Damien), and Some Far Away Place (follows Rose). All three books (and the podcast) are incredibly queer and so so SO GOOD! The books are all technically stand-alone and supplemental to the podcast. Except for The Infinite Noise—it’s basically the first season from Caleb and Adam’s perspective. So if you do read it, and you like it, definitely give the podcast a chance.

SAPPHICS / WLW
Rebecca Thorne has made Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea free to get on Amazon ebook until the end of the month.
It’s cosy, cute, gay as heck and low angst. For fans of legends and lattes & d&d. Sharing this as it’s great for anyone who often can’t afford or struggles to safely access physical books in ban areas.
The author is also awesome, and speaks a lot about queer access to literature. Can’t recommend Thorne enough.
*edit, this is now no longer available *

Book Blurb:A swoon-worthy debut queer Victorian romance in which two debutantes distract themselves from having to seek husbands by setting up their widowed parents, and instead find their perfect match in each other—the lesbian Bridgerton/Parent Trap you never knew you needed!
Gwen has a brilliant beyond brilliant idea.
It’s 1857, and anxious debutante Beth has just one season to snag a wealthy husband, or she and her mother will be out on the street. But playing the blushing ingenue makes Beth’s skin crawl and she’d rather be anywhere but here.
Gwen, on the other hand, is on her fourth season and counting, with absolutely no intention of finding a husband, possibly ever. She figures she has plenty of security as the only daughter of a rakish earl, from whom she’s gotten all her flair, fun, and less-than-proper party games.
“Let’s get them together,” she says.
It doesn’t take long for Gwen to hatch her latest scheme: rather than surrender Beth to courtship, they should set up Gwen’s father and Beth’s newly widowed mother. Let them get married instead.
“It’ll be easy” she says.
There’s just…one, teeny, tiny problem. Their parents kind of seem to hate each other.
But no worries. Beth and Gwen are more than up to the challenge of a little twenty-year-old heartbreak. How hard can parent-trapping widowed ex-lovers be?
Of course, just as their plan begins to unfold, a handsome, wealthy viscount starts calling on Beth, offering up the perfect, secure marriage.
Beth’s not mature enough for this…
Now Gwen must face the prospect of sharing Beth with someone else, forever. And Beth must reckon with the fact that she’s caught feelings, hard, and they’re definitely not for her potential fiancé.
That’s the trouble with matchmaking: sometimes you accidentally fall in love with your best friend in the process.
Review:
A debutante desperate to snag a wealthy husband least her mother and her end up destitute finds herself falling for the one person she shouldn't be, a fellow debutante... who's father also has a complicated history with her mother. Beth is anxious to find a husband in her last season, she needs the money to make sure her mother and her can still keep their house. Yet when she meets Gwen, a charming and beautiful debutante who has no intention of finding a husband, Beth finds herself falling for the first time in her life. To make matters a bit more complicated, what started off as friendship and hopes to get Beth's widowed mother to marry Gwen's father, a romance that had happened in their past, Beth and Gwen find themselves falling for each other. Beth and Gwen want to fix the twenty year old heartbreak between their parents yet also deal with their own complicated situation when a handsome suitor offers for Beth's hand....and Beth will be forced to choose between financial stability in a loveless marriage, or living a scandalous life but with the girl who has her heart. This was a really cute parent trap/ forbidden romance book. Beth and Gwen are both dealing with difficult situations, particularly Beth. They love each other but in a time where such a relationship would be hard to have they have to find a way to be together and find out how to make their parents happy. This was a really cute historical sapphic romance and I did love how Beth and Gwen schemed to be together and constantly fought for one another.
*Thanks Netgalley and Avon and Harper Voyager, Avon for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Are cozy vampire books a thing yet?
Tumblr media
Because this series is it.
Cozy, immersive, healing. You can tell the author spent a lot of time building this world, and characters. It's vampire and queer normative, and the character arcs are phenomenal.
Okay, now that the official review stuff is out of the way:
Nino is baby girl. I said what I said.
Haruka = panther = yes
The slow burn and love scenes (because they are 100% love scenes, not smut scenes) are so beautiful I want to cry. THIS is romance.
I still think the third will be my favorite but we'll see after I'm through with my reread 💪

Stars Still Fall - Finally here
I didn't plan to stay up until the release, but due to dealing with a death in the family, here we are. Happy birthday to me, and to this book.
Prose-heavy Southern Gothic coming-of-age story set in mid-90s Alabama. We've got:
99% vibes and 1% plot, just like Papa Hawthorne taught me.
Jolene, but make it gay.
We heard you like hurt/comfort so we put some hurt/comfort inside your hurt/comfort.
If you'd like to request the paperback at your local bookstore or library, you'll need this: ISBN:9798215007990
Amazon has both e-copy and paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2XQ8J85
And of course you can buy it directly from me from Payhip (for a dollar less, or, if you use QUEERFAM at check out, for free): https://payhip.com/b/m8va0
You can read the first chapter and half of the second chapter here: [Sample]
And of course I'd appreciate a review on whatever platform you like, including [GoodReads].

Fav Books with Ace Characters
Oh?? It's Ace Week?? We have books for that.
Tumblr media
These days, we're spoiled for choice when it comes to books with ace rep, so to narrow it down here are just my personal favorites:
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Just in case there's some chance you haven't heard of Tumblr's favorite terrifying murderbot. Murderbot is a security unit that hacked its own governor module and, with its newfound freedom, binge watches TV instead of going on a murderous rampage. No, it's not a problem that the ace rep in this book is a sort of robot. Trust me on this one. Start with All Systems Red.
Wayward Children series by @seananmcguire
Nancy went to another world when she was a kid. Now she's back and her parents don't know what to do with their quiet, strange girl child. Luckily, there's Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. No solicitations, no visitors, no quests. Start with Every Heart a Doorway.
Dread Nation duology by Justina Ireland
An alternate history set in Civil War era America where, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the dead began to rise. Congress quickly passes an act requiring children of certain backgrounds (take a wild guess) to attend combat schools and train to be zombie killers and protect the wealthy, white upper class. The main character in this one isn't ace, but another major character is. Start with Dread Nation.
The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
Epic fantasy about a disgraced and forgotten order of knights re-emerging to save a world perpetually at war from an even worse fate. It's not outright stated until later, but a major character is ace, and she's easy to spot. I know these books are cinderblocks but listen. Listen. They are So Good. If the length is intimidating, try the audiobooks - they are expertly narrated and they fly by. Start with The Way of Kings.

Happy International Asexuality Day! 🖤🩶🤍💜
Much like last year, here's a recommendation list of aspec books I've read and a few on my tbr. I've also added some aspec authors, too. It's obviously not an exhaustive list, but it'll get you started.
I'm spending this rainy day celebrating (i.e. reading) instead of educating. I've got some posts already on my page with my experience being ace. I'm tired of constantly educating and defending my sexuality to people. Google is a good starting point. Search out ace bookstagrammers and content creators. We aren't a monolith and all of our experiences are different.
I hope you enjoy the recs! Have you read any of these or have any favorites I should put on my radar?

Book Blurb: A charming POC-led WLW romance where two new friends hit the road in search of the missing volumes of their favorite manga.
Neesha Sparks is a disabled, vocal community activist with a passion for costume design. Gabby Graciana is an optimistic surfer - and, like Neesha, a new kid at school. When the two girls discover that they like the same manga series, Navigator Nozomi, they become more than just fellow new kids. But it was more than just having read the same book series--neither of them had finished it! Soon, they become new friends on a mission - to track down the remaining Navigator Nozomi books. This slice-of-life romance follows the two girls as they adventure across North Carolina to find each book, with their story intercut with the tales of Navigator Nozomi. Neesha and Gabby find more than just the books though—they find acceptance, friendship, understanding, and love.
Review:
A charming and sweet story about two girls who find friendship and romance when they try and find the missing volumes of their favorite manga. Neesha Sparks is a disabled community activist with a passion for costume design. Gabby Graciana is a optimistic surfer, and both girls are new kids at school. When they both discover that they like the same manga series, Navigator Nozomi, they become friends. Neither of them has actually finished reading the series and decide to track down the remaining books together... and along the way find romance and friendship in each other. This was a really sweet read and the story was touching, I love the emphasis on friendship and the slice of life aspect of the story was great. I would absolutely recommend this book!
