Story Prompt 105
As the figure approached, he couldn't help but chuckle softly. "You know, it's funny how everyone expects the hero to win every time."
The heroes, caught off guard by his nonchalant demeanor, exchanged uncertain glances before one of them retorted, "Well, that's how it goes. Heroes always prevail. It's the way of the story."
He shook his head, a wry smile playing on his lips. "Seems like a narrow view of things, don't you think?"
Their confidence waning, the heroes tried to muster their courage. "You won't win this time. We'll make sure of it," they declared, their voices tinged with desperation.
With a shrug, he replied, "Guess we'll find out soon enough."
In a sudden flurry of action, he overpowered them with ease, leaving the heroes stunned and defeated. As they lay defeated at his feet, he sighed softly.
"You never stood a chance," he mused, shaking his head at their misguided certainty.

I dunno if the month prompts are still open, if they're not you can just chuck this but yo number 13. In a fairytale (preferably slightly dark fairytale vibes but just normal fairytale would do grand as well). For the character I dunno I'm leaning towards Thorin but you can just pick whatever lotr/hobbit character you want
The Dragon Prince: Thorin x Female! Reader
Tumblr media
(Inspired By the story of the Lindworm Prince)
You always dreamed of your wedding being a happy one, never did you think you would find yourself married to The Shadow of Erebor. The dragon that plagued the land now for years. But Erebor was not always plagued by this curse. At least not until that fateful night.
The kingdom had always thrived even in great times of distress, it and its people were strong and hardy with wealth without limit. But to one none of the riches could hold a candle to the want of a child. The queen of Erebor was stricken with grief over having been unable to bare an heir, to never know the love of a child broke her heart. Until one night when the kingdom was visited by an man, one of unknown origin and quite handsome but strangely his eyes were older than they expected, it was as if they had seen everything. He claimed he could bless them with a child giving them a box with three gems, red white and black, of significant beauty inside and to have them be placed in fire for a year. After that they would break open and their gift would be received.
He told them that the red gem would give them a son and the white gem a daughter. When asked about the black gem the man only replied.
“It will give you a gift like no other. But I must warn you...One or two I can promise but a third cannot” and with those words he left. Never to be seen or heard from again.
That night the queen was too eager at the prospect of not only one child but three made her forget the man’s warning as she placed all three into the fireplace in the royal chambers. For the next year the servants kept the fire ablaze until that fateful night when the gems cracked. Triplets had been born, the youngest was a daughter with hair as white as diamonds and the middle a boy with hair as red as the hottest forges but the third...was no child. A baby dragon as black as the sky cooed at its mother but before the queen could even respond. The servants made it flee in fear into the deepest forests near Erebor where none dared dwell. And like a bad dream the birth of the dragon was soon forgotten.
Many years past and both the young prince and princess grew up both beautiful and kind and strong in their own ways. And soon the time came for them to find one to marry. Their son Frerin along with their daughter Dis arrived at the crossroads when suddenly the ground beneath shook as from the forest as the trees strained against the tremble of the beast that emerged from the shadows. A black dragon as dark as the night with eyes as blue as the deepest drowning oceans, scales stronger than any steel splattered with white specks like stars in the night with horns and mane to match. And from it the only words it said
“A bride for me before a bride for you.”
It did not allow either to pass but did not harm them either. With their only option to return home and to tell of what happened. The night it was revealed to both children and the king that the dragon was in truth their oldest sibling and the rightful heir. The king knowing the dragon though it was his child meant that it would not harm his kingdom and their people. So with great regret he wrote to two kingdoms promising the prospect of marriage to their child, one to the realm of Mirkwood and one to the Kingdom of the Northmen. Twice did the halls of Erebor cheer for the marriages and twice did the wedding nights end in bloodshed. Once again the worlds the dragon spoke were only
“A bride for me before a bride for you.”
-
And now here you were a simple miners daughter forced into the situation at the request of your father and the king to spare the wrath from another kingdom. But you had a secret that even the dragon could not have guessed.
-
The night your father told you that you were to be given to the dreaded dragon as a bride you fled into the woods crying at the thought of your life ending, You thoughts wondered to the idea of fleeing but you knew in doing so the dragon would attack the people. A fate you could not accept. The sounds of the forest gave little comfort until the sound of an elderly voice spoke out to you.
“What would be the matter child of stone?”
You looked up to see a man dressed in a grey robe and beard to match as a blue pointed hat moved to show the old man smoking on a small pipe as he walked with a staff in hand. A wizard no doubt.
“I am to be married to the terrible dragon but it has devoured two princesses already...I have no chance for it to spare me? Why am I to die?” You exclaimed as tears fell faster as your breath shortened at the terror of what would come.
It was only the gentle shoulder touch from the elderly man that brought your attention back.
“Dear child of stone, listen carefully and do as I say and you will survive the night and save not only your life but the dragon’s as well.”
-
Those last words echoed in your mind. It was no secret now that the dragon was in truth the eldest prince. But how would doing what he instructed save both of their lives?
The next day a third royal wedding was prepared but it matched in no way to the two prior, while those had a measure of hope for the end to the situation. Now it was nothing to anyone except an elegant funeral for you. In truth it was almost everything you imagined for you true wedding. A dress as white as snow with diamonds and satin clinging to your body with white fur around your shoulders and a white veil to match and while the dragon never showed itself you heard its deep voice from the shadows echo in the deep halls
After the wedding had finished, the banquet had begun but for you there was no time to relax and enjoy the false festivities. You quickly rushed to the kitchen and requested they bring you ten nightgowns and two barrels one with ale and the other with wine and along with that a whip.
When night came you were brought down to the dragons chamber and luckily saw the material you needed were there and sighed a bit from the relief. You looked around the barely lit room to see a bed was in the center with some decorative fabrics hung above. But the fear and knowing that two maidens died her made you shudder. Before the dragon was to arrive you hurried and removed the wedding dress and threw it to the ground and rushed to get the ten dresses on and placed the veil over yourself as you sat on the bed awaiting the beast.
You thoughts wondered off so much that you had almost failed to hear the mighty steps of the dragon enter the chamber. A sudden surge of fear rushed through your body as a small bit of tears pricked your eyes as you brought your hands together praying until you felt the veil from your head gently lifted from your head causing you took look up to see the dragon in all. It’s scales showing only slightly from the shadows as the vibrant blue eyes stared into yours. You could not lie to yourself, it was quite a beautiful dragon. Its deep voice spoke.
“Your eyes show fear...but I see no greed or hatred in them. The others were not like you. The elf showed no love to me and the maiden to the north only had greed in her heart for our gold. Brides not worthy for me”
The dragon shifted closer to you as it spoke again.
“Maiden, shed your dress.”
It said with no question . Making you slightly happy knowing it didn’t suspect anything. At least for now
“I request you shed your skin.”
You saw the dragon slightly taken aback from this.
The dragons previous brides to be did not even try to speak to him. Only their screams when it revealed itself and their true intentions made true when it looked into their eyes. A dragons eyes can see much but most of all the true intentions and feelings of their captive.
“None of the maidens before asked this of me? Why?”
“A wedding gift for me on my last day.” You said looking straight into its eyes showing this time no fear.
The dragon said nothing as it did what you asked, but when you shed a gown only for the dragon to see another it requested once more it to be removed and once again you requested it shed its skin. The hours passed slowly as now the dragon laid on the floor too tired from the stress of shedding its skin. The scales on its body looked fragile as if they could break with a simple touch, the mane and horns now smaller and more glossy than before. You were down to your last gown when the dragon raised its head, looking into its eyes you saw something you never thought you would see in such a terrifying beast. Tears. Tears falling from its eyes showing it to be in pain.
“Maiden...” It said weakly as you quickly opened the barrel filled with ale and dunked the whip into it before striking at the dragons soft hide making it scream and whither in pain as you watched it cry out and thrashed on the ground amongst the shed skin and gowns before you grabbed the barrel of wine and threw it on the dragon causing it to cry even more than before, as you stood over the dragon you could not help but feel sorry for the creature. It was denied any love from its very birth and even denied a normal life.
You carefully stepped forward wrapping your arms around the neck of the dragon and gingerly moved him on to the edge of the head and hugged his body close. You could feel his body shake as the tears still fell but his body slowly relaxed as you hummed him to sleep as you spoke to the dragon this time.
“Sleep, dear prince. I will not leave you.”
You felt the dragon shift only slightly as sleep slowly took over both of you until the crack of dawn came as the first light shined into the room, rousing you from your sleep as you opened your eyes as a small gasp escaped your lips. In front of you was no dragon but a man, Hair black and white exactly like its scales, his skin was slightly red from where the whip had hit him, you blushed ever so slightly as you saw his arms had wrapped around your frame sometime in the night but more so did the blush darken once you realized he was nude with only the loose individual scales covering his lower body and yours like a blanket.
You shook your head as you looked up at his face bringing a gentle hand to the side of his cheek. The feel of his beard against your hand tickled a bit as you gently stroked your thumb against it. At least until he shifted and brought a hand to his chest and arm in pain. Before he gasped slightly at the realization that he had a normal body. Suddenly he looked at you with eyes as vibrant as sapphires. There was nothing you could think to say for a moment as you brought a hand into his.
“I am sorry you had to endure so much...but someone needed to whip you into shape.” You said with a small smirk to him.
He said nothing as he started to chuckle and soon started laughing causing you to join in. Until you felt him take one of your hands in his kissing the back of it.
“I  truly hope you meant what you said...when you said you would not leave. But I would not blame you if you never wanted to see me again after all I have done.”
You shifted a little to his side of the bed slightly lost in thought.
“Wat’s your name?”
“Well my mother when I was born did call out to me before the servants scared me off...she called me Thorin. I suppose that’s what she meant to name me.”
‘Well Thorin...” you brought your forehead to his as you felt the exhaustion of everything that had happened crashed over you like a wave as you sunk into the bed.
“I believe we have all the time in the world to get to know each other better. But for now...lets just rest a bit longer.”
“As you wish,” He said holding you a bit closer as sleep took over both of you once more but this time no worries or fear of what was to come. Only the prospect and hope of what the future held.

Robin landed on the roof next to him and Bruce could already feel the headache building. They were looking down on a young blond man with pointed ears and a large halberd on his backriding on a white horse. The guy looked like he had come straight out of a fairytale. He knew that if this was a new rogue Damian would argue about keeping the horse. Actually he would probably want to keep the horse even if he wasn't a rogue.
Deciding the guy had gotten close enough they swooped down to confront him. The man, startled, stopped his horse and pulled the large halberd off his back. He held it in front of him, as if in warning. The man looked wary of them but not afraid. They stared at eachother for a moment before the man spoke in a language neither Batman not his Robin knew.
---
Link was having a wierd day. He had literally just saved Princess Zelda a week ago (and for the second time) when he encountered some kind of demon in black and white. The Master Sword glowed in the demons presence which was all Link needed to know before chasing after the being. The thing, looking like a teen in odd clothing that reminded him of links own rubber suit, bolted into a green portal it had created.
Not hesitating he had his horse leap into it. And now he was in a strange place with no sign of the demon. After getting attacked by a man yelling in a language he didn't recognize, he switched out his sword for a halberd for that extra reach on horseback and continued on his way, leaving the unconscious man on the road side behind him.
This place was odd. Parts of some walls would light up, showing images of people and places he didn't know along with a written language he didn't recognize. He came across many people who looked at him oddly...or at least he thought they were people. They looked like Hylians but most of them were taller than the average Hylian and to Links horror they had short rounded ears. How could they hear thier gods with such tiny ears?
He was scared, but he carried on anyway. Eventually he gets confronted by someone dressed as a monster and a child. They manage to settle thier...dispute?...without violence so that was nice. He pulled a few apples and swift carrots out of his tablet-to the curiosity of the duo- and hands them to the child. The kid caught on quickly and raced off to feed his horse her favorite snacks.
Link will have to figure out how to overcome this language barrier
Bruce however, has discovered this was not a man, but a teenager lost in a foreign world and is set on adopting him.

Prompt #2
There is not NEARLY enough Rapunzel AU fanfics. I'm thinking of mighty witcher Geralt coming across a lone, tall, moss, ivy, and lavender covered tower out in the woods, and being surprised to find a young man imprisoned there. I love the idea that instead of paintings like Disney's Rapunzel used to fill up her time and tower, that instead he sings and makes songs, so there's like.. Lyrics and sheet music scribbled onto the walls.
♡!Optional addons!♡ • Geralt is tracking down an evil infamous mage, of whom turns out to be the captor of this gorgeous musician he found
• Jaskier has blonde hair until it's cut like in Tangled, to call back to his Dandelion roots (hah.. Roots... Like hair... and dandelions..) • We could go the Disney's Tangled route and have there be a lost Prince Julian that Jaskier just so happens to resemble (and secretly is)
• Perhaps Jaskier is physically bound there by magic or chains, Or perhaps he's there out of nothing more than guilt, shame, and/or fear toward the person keeping him there • Perhaps Jaskier is a painter in this universe, and above all, wants to see real buttercups, dandelions, etc, out in the wild, for they don't grow near his tower, and the best he can get is his own paintings of their descriptions in books.
• Maybe if we feel more adventurous, Jaskier could be part harpy, kept in a mage's tower in a birdcage, kept for his magical hair activated by his magical singing (Ooh, this gives me more bird jaskier ideas.. You might see those soon)
• Or perhaps, after Blaviken, a witcher is sealed away in a tower, only for some dumbass (affectionate) struggling bard to stroll across and think it a perfect shelter from the oncoming rain.

“Kiss me, dear princess, for I may have the appearance of a frog, but I am really a prince who was cursed into this form! Free me from my suffering!”
“Oh, shit.”
“I beg your pardon — ”
“I mean, sorry, I totally would — it’s just that… I don’t know if it would do anything to lift the curse, or what. I’m cursed, too, you know.”
“That’s impossible, you look like a beautiful human princess.”
“Well, by dawn, I’ll be a swan. It’s… kind of a popular curse, isn’t it? Turning royalty into animals? What’s up with that, do you think?”

Fandom: Lord of The Rings - The Hobbit Ship/Pairing: Fili x Reader Trope: Fairy Tale - Curse Note: Prompt is in the ask. Thanks @sotwk I don't have the occasion to write for Fili near enough. SORRY FOR BEING SO LATE. Warnings: Curse, losing your voice, not being able to communicate, near death experience. Word count: 1 954 Tag-list: @heilith @asgardianhobbit98 @middleearthpixie @glassgulls @evenstaredits @fizzyxcustard @sotwk
The summer had barely begun, when you met him. At first, you thought he was an illusion. A trick of your mind. Clear eyes, blonde hair, he’d carried himself just like you thought he would. The Crowned Prince, they called him. He had introduced himself as Fili. Nothing more. He came and went to your stand on the market place. Over the course of a few months, he had become a vital presence in your life. Just as you did in his.
To your agony, none of you would speak of it aloud. In your mind only, could he hold you, could he be with you. The status was one thing. The other was how people called you: the witch. Fili would never refer to you in such a way. He once called you a “soft-spirited soul who could cure any wound”. It had made your heart beat so fast you thought he would surely see the beats on your skin. But, the herbs you used and the unguents? It was common knowledge, yet it was not as widely used as it should have been. It was considered a women’s trade first and then was replaced completely by modern medicine. They did not keep your stall empty though. Even, on occasions, some people would come to you for more than just healing. For a kind ear and a cup of ale. That was why it did not surprise you when the tall and grand man came, in his white robes and equally beautiful staff. He did not say his name but you would remember his face forever. An intricate affair of wrinkles and bones showing under his skin. It was as if he’d been taunt over an overused canvas. You had seen worse ugliness, worse gnarly members, deformed by arthritis or unfair accidents. It was nothing new and you thought nothing of it.
“What may I help you with tonight, traveller?”
His robe was stained on the hems, earth and what you assumed was crusted mud over it. He did not move, only following your movements across the room with intent. His lips seemed to be moving, but no sound came out of them. Uneasy, you sat down and offered a cup of warm tea, just brewed. He stayed motionless.
“You look just like her, you know? — What?”
The jolt almost made you knock over your tea. The last time someone compared you to anyone else was when your grandmother was alive. Could he have known her? Or was he toying with you?
“You like just like your grandmother…” He stepped into your space, closing in on you. A chill ran down your spine. He had known her then. “The same eyes, the same face, those same treacherous lips…” He grabbed onto your chin, a harsh grip forcing you into meeting his eyes. You were so scared you did not dare move a muscle. “And you will pay for her lies and her filthy words.”
He released you, your body meeting with the floor in a violent attempt at getting away from him. His staff pointed at you, he mumbled incoherent words. Then, some all too coherent ones.
“Blood of the blood of my enemy, I hereby punish you. For your grandmother broke my heart with her words and it will break yours too! You will remain speechless, until someone confesses their love for you. Only if they do and you love them in return, the curse shall be lifted. A day and a night you shall have before the words strangle you. Hear my wrath, blood of the blood and know your time to be shortened.”
A maniacal laugh echoed through the room, white and grey fog sneaking through the door. You raised your head and he was gone, heaps of smoke the only sign he was there at all.
The next morning, you were mute.
———— It had taken a heavy toll on you. People could not understand why from one day to the next, your voice had gone out. The weather could not explain it. You couldn’t any more either.
Of course, Fili chose that day to show up. He did not exactly chose, for it was the first time in weeks he had managed to have some free time. Naturally, he arranged to come and see you.
“Hello.”
The smile you offered was…odd. Uneasy. He wondered what he could have done to deserve this thin lipped, excuse of a smile. You were always so quick to smile brightly, even in the early hours of the morning, eyes stinging with the last remnants of sleep.
“Are you not going to say it back?”
He rose an eyebrow, more out of curiosity than animosity. You tried. You really, really tried to tell him. But the clients were growing impatient and the line was growing thick behind him. Upon seeing you interact with them, gestures and half guessed prices, Fili realised you were not choosing not to answer. You could not. In an impulse, he jumped over the stand and joined you behind.
“Hello, good sir, what might we do for you today?”
The dandy man blinked once. Twice. His eyes kept going from you to Fili before choosing to ignore the fact that the future heir to the kingdom was now selling herbs and creams on the market. You could not stop him even if you had wanted to. Before you could try to intervene, he had already taken it upon himself to help you. He pushed you back and sat you down on your chariot. He did not stop, not for one minute. The whole morning he served and listened sometimes turning to you for confirmation. You intervened once or twice, and that was that. How long did he observe you to know almost as much as you did? From where you were you saw him leave his heavy pelted coat, warmed up by the activity. His shoulder blades barely hidden behind a linen shirt, became a good distraction to the feeling of helplessness within. Your fingers twitched once or twice, wanting nothing more than to reach out for him. You knew you couldn’t. But one can always dream. Right? Suddenly in lack of clients, he turned to you, chest rising rapidly. A hint of hair peeked from under his collarbones and you had a hard time focusing on his words.
“Now. How did you lose your voice?”
A real worry started to gain his face even as he smirked. He could not fool you anymore. His eyes started studying you, as if your face could tell him what had happened.
“Did you catch a cold?”
You shook your head and sighed. This was going to be impossible to explain. Suddenly, you sprung to your feet grabbing his hand. If he had been in his right mind, he would have stuttered and crumbled internally at that. Luckily he wasn’t and merely blushed when you did. Your hands were showing him something.
“Something to write?”
Excitedly, you nodded. He pulled a piece of paper and a charcoal out of his pocket and handed them to you. In quick words, you explained the situation to him. As he read on, his heart kept sinking. He knew his attachment to be love. Fili had known for quite some time. Regardless, if you did not feel the same then it was a doomed story. The deadline was growing closer as each moment passed and he was losing his mind. He kept pacing trying to find another way out of it. There was none. Even if he had gone to Gandalf - the sorcerer of the Kingdom - it would be too late before he’d come up with a solution. His only hope was to tell you how he felt. In the unlikely odds, that maybe, you would not reject him. If not, he’d make your last day a feast and a paradise. The taste of grief melted in his mouth. He swallowed it soon. In a whisper and an extended hand, he called you to him. When you took his hand, shaking and hesitant, his heartbeat accelerated.
If only he knew. His face told you everything. You could see his resolution disappear with every passing moment. He had no solution. So, he did not love you in the end and the dreams you had about living together were just dreams. You almost cried when he pulled you in, embracing you in his arms, his warmth. He could not look at you and you could not blame him for it.
“It’s time I told you…”
You held your breath, a deep sigh shaking him. He took your face in his hands, gentle and tender.
“I am afraid that all those months I have deceived you.”
Your heart sank again and as you struggled in his hold, he stopped you.
“Let me finish, please.”
You nodded, tearful sobs already on the edge of your lips.
“I have not been honest. From the very first time we met, I knew. I knew I would come to love you. I did not stop it. I knew our stations would not match. It didn’t bother me. It still doesn’t. I don’t care if you don’t love me back. I need you to hear this…”
Tears ran down your cheeks. He had to be lying. He had to be. How could he say such lies when you were in this deadly situation? How could he toy with you like this. Again, you struggled against his hold and he gripped your shoulders. Through the cloths his heat was both a fast poison and a powerful balm.
“Just look at me. Forget everything else. Forget where we are. Just listen to me.”
You did. You looked at him and his sea-coloured eyes. A deep feeling of content took root inside of you. Maybe if you were to die by tomorrow, enjoying him was not the worst thing you could be doing right now. So you did as he said and focused on his voice, his eyes, his neatly braided beard. Your fingertips combed gently through it and it made him stutter for a moment.
“I love… No. I adore you. You will not die today, I will not allow it. Never will I allow it. You cannot leave me like this. There were shadows in me before, now there’s only your light. Yours and no one else. How you did it, I will never know but I love you. I love you, and I will always love you until the end of time… —I love you too.”
Your voice croaked as if it had been unused for years. It startled both of you. An immense joy washed over you and you jumped into his arms, breathing him in, basking in his warmth. He held on to you so tight, it was sure to leave marks. The market around you was unchanged but you were. He looked at you dead in the eye, a mere centimetres from your face.
“Never, ever, do that again. —No promises.”
You laughed and squealed when he mumbled about “promises” and “worried sick” and you being the death of him one day. Quickly, in between two rants you pulled him to you and kissed him. He continued on for a good moment before he realised what had happened. He blushed furiously, the corner of his lips lifting. Soon, your lips found his, gently. He wanted to enjoy that kiss and all the others coming afterwards.
People around you, were sure to have something to talk about the next day.
On the other hand, you would choose to be nowhere else but right there in his arms.
All their words be damned.

Listen. A Rapunzel au/retelling for Kavetham would be absolutely hilarious. Alhaitham would be perfectly fine in his tower—no one to bother him, a nice cushy home, no need to work—as long as he’s kept supplied with interesting books. And then you have Kaveh, who’s more interested in critiquing the tower’s architectural design than saving the prince(ss)

Remember how I said stay tuned for a sequel to Stargazer, Moonweaver, Net? This is that sequel! You can also read it here.
This was conceived of for Phantasy Phest, but written for Ectoberhaunt 2023: Tabletop.
This fic was a collaboration! The authors are @akela-nakamura, @datawyrms, @seaglass-skies, @jackdaw-sprite, and myself.
“The sky goes dark, and a cold wind rises. In the distance- thunder, growing closer! The forest goes quiet, holding its breath.” A heavy pause, then, “Suddenly the wind howls! But you know you can’t seek shelter. There is something lurking in these ruins, and if you aren’t careful. It. Will. Find. You.”
A low whistle breaks the atmosphere sharply enough that not even the very real wind rattling the equally real windows can bring it back. Tucker shoots a glare Danny’s way, slowly lowering his hands from where they’d been wiggling dramatically in the air. All it gets him is a sheepish grin and an apologetic shrug. He pushes his glasses up his nose with a huff, ignoring Sam’s snickering, and turns his glare back to the screen in front of him.
“Anyway. Roll for perception.”
The rattle of dice was followed by a couple of groans and a soft yes! from Jazz.
"Okay, what did you guys get?" Tucker asked, peering at the dice on the table. "Oh."
"I think we can safely say I don't know what's happening," Danny said at his expression.
"Yeeah. Sam?"
"Twelve."
"Jazz?"
Jazz bounced a little in her seat. "Twenty one!" She knew playing a ranger was a good choice.
"Okay, okay.” Tucker took a deep breath and looked back at his laptop. “As the thunder rolls like great wheels in the sky, the wind whips at you. It flattens the grass around you in vicious ripples and grabs at your clothes. The ruins stay motionless around you, unmoved by the building storm.
“And yet, beneath the keening of the wind in your ears, you hear something else. It’s rhythmic, sharp. Repetitive. And it sounds like–
“Snap. Snap. Snap.”
Tucker smiled.
“Sam,” he said. “You see that it’s coming from a ragged banner, fluttering in the wind.”
Sam frowned in thought.
“You,” Tucker pointed at Jazz, “see a little head poking around one of the fallen pillars. It's got a beard, and its hair looks kind of weird."
"What do I see?" asked Danny.
"You're staring at the sun, I think." said Sam.
"You’re not the DM,” said Danny. “Tucker?”
“The sun is no longer visible,” said Tucker. Before Danny could gloat, he added, ”You’re staring at where it was.”
While Danny pouted in betrayal, Jazz was mentally rifling through the manuals she’d read as research before playing. Something small and bearded, and it had weird hair. Or something was wrong with the hair. Or something was in the hair?
But there weren’t that many short bearded races eccentric enough to do any of that.
She hazarded a guess. “Is it a gnome?”
Tucker raised an eyebrow. “Roll for knowledge nature.”
That was a yes! And Danny had said she didn’t need to read everything to be prepared.
It was not a gnome.
It was something smaller and weirder called a grig, and as Tucker described it escorting them from the (apparently cursed) ruins, Jazz looked out the window.
The rain was still pouring down outside, dense enough to make white cloud the farther houses on their street and gather in mist along the ground. Water streamed down the glass in rivulets, leaving the image of the street distorted.
The reflection of their room in the window was warm by comparison, all yellows and creams and scattered paper.
And a little bit of green.
Jazz smiled back at her brother in the windows’ reflection, not letting on that she'd seen the subtle iridescence of his eyes. He'd tell her when he was ready, and until then she'd just be supportive. And patient, even if she could feel a horde of questions burning in the back of her mind.
“The grig sits on a log and pulls a doll-sized fiddle from his pack,” said Tucker, and Jazz returned her attention to the game.
“He puts it to his chin,” and Tucker mimed holding a fiddle to his chin –
“I thought that was violins,” said Danny.
“Danny, I am going to commit some violins,” said Tucker.
“Never mind.”
“He puts it to his chin,” repeated Tucker, “And begins to play. And it’s beautiful.”
He consulted his laptop and fiddled with some keys. With a decisive tap on the spacebar, music began to play. Tucker spoke over it.
“The music fills the air like raindrops on leaves. Slowly, it grows to a musical crescendo and you find your spirits bolstered, your burdens lessened. It’s as though there’s air beneath your feet and you could –almost– begin to dance. But he stops after just a few more chords and chuckles under his breath.
“‘Nah,’ the grig says. ‘I won’t do that to ya.’”
“Do what?” asked Jazz before she could help herself.
“Ya don’t know, miss?” Tucker said, still in the grig’s voice.
Oh right. This was supposed to be in character. And Jazz was playing a ranger. “Maybe?”  She reached for her dice, rolling them between her fingers.  They were, she had quickly discovered, surprisingly fun to fidget with.
“Knowledge nature,” Tucker suggested in a stage whisper.
Jazz straightened in her seat and rolled the d20, watching as it settled. “Eighteen?”
“They’re good enough musicians to weave spells with their music like bards, and can trap people in dances for hours. They do it as a prank, sometimes.”
Jazz remembered the siren from a few months back and winced.
“Thank you for not doing that,” she said.
“It just didn’t seem like it’d be funny enough,” said Tucker, back in character.
“Wow, reassuring,” said Sam.
Tucker smiled.
“And that’s less reassuring,” Danny commented. “I roll diplomacy for him to not do that. Twenty five.”
“What do you say?” asked Tucker.
Danny thought before responding.
“That was some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. You’re very talented. Where did you learn to play like that?”
“You’re right it’s a talent! Everyone in the clan’s got music in their bodies, right down to their feet,” Tucker said. And then he switched back out of the grig’s twang. “He puts his legs together and rubs, and they fill the air with a deep hum. His wings tremble from the effort and the sound.”
“That’s not a trick I’d ever manage,” said Danny. He sounded impressed.
“Not you! And not those lepre-cons,” said Tucker in the grig’s voice, snarling on the last word.
“Leprechauns?” asked Danny.
The start of whatever Tucker was going to say was cut off with a crash as the basement door was kicked open with a heavy thunk immediately followed by Jack Fenton’s booming voice. “Did somebody say leprechauns?!” He charged into the room, swinging some kind of… something vaguely resembling a gun, forcing Sam to duck and earning a yelp from Danny as he dove under the table.
Tucker was quick to pipe up, slapping a hand down over the monster manual in front of him. “Nope! No leprechauns! No, uh, sir. Not here!”
Maddie’s voice trailed into the room more slowly than her husband’s, followed by the woman herself. “Now, dear, you know the Fenton Fae Fryer isn’t ready to use yet!”
Danny’s hiss of “The what-” went ignored.
“But it will be! Soon! And those monsters won’t know what hit them!”
“That’s right dear! Now, kids, remember to stay inside after dark this week- I know, I know it’s raining, but the rain’ll let up eventually, and with the eclipse coming up you can’t be too careful!”
Sam looked like she wanted to say something, but stopped when she caught Tucker shaking his head at her. She sat back in her seat with a huff.
“Darn right!” Jack chimed in from where he’d finally set the huge weapon down on the kitchen counter. “This is a huge opportunity for hunting! All those monstrous meddlers will think they’re too strong to bother hiding like the foul fiendish felons that they are!”
“We’ll remind them why humans drove them into hiding in the first place!” Maddie chimed in. “Oh, I hope we can keep some captive specimens too, there’s so much to learn! The small ones just fall apart so easily, we can barely do even a single test…”
Jack squeezed his hand into a dramatic fist. “Of course we’re gonna capture ‘em! We’re gonna grab those ghastly goons or my name’s not Jack Fenton!”
With a whoop, he punched the air.
Jazz had been glaring at her parents, shoulders tense, but something twitched in the corner of her vision. When she looked, Danny’s reflection in the window was haunted. A pit formed in Jazz’s stomach, and her heart sparked with anger.
Danny was one of the ‘small ones’ in his other form.  She didn’t think they’d managed to catch any like him.  She didn’t think he would still be here if they had, but–
“Now, Jack. We’re not guaranteed to have success just yet,” her mother said, but she was smiling at Jack’s cheer. “We haven’t finished baiting everything. And without first-hand data to back up our research, it’s just that much harder to hunt efficiently, much less decide what bait is effective. Knowledge is power, of course!”
“And we’ll have plenty to work with soon, baby!  We’ll catch one this time for sure!  Maybe one of those ‘fairies’ that keep tricking the kids–”
Jazz shoved her chair back with a horrendous screech and slammed the fist still holding her dice down on the table, ignoring the one that went flying off across the room and the brilliant flare of lightning that had the overhead lights flickering. “No. No nono, no. You are not doing this tonight!
“Maybe, just maybe, for once in your life you should try to understand instead of just finding better ways to kill people who never did anything to you!”
"Jazz," said Maddie in a tone of forced patience, "they aren't people.  These things are monsters, even the small, pretty ones."
Danny had sunk so low in his chair that his chin was level with the tabletop.  He looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.
"Especially the small pretty ones!" shouted Jack.
Danny flinched.
A bibliophile, Jazz had read the words ‘shaking with rage’ dozens of times.  She’d always thought it was a turn of phrase.  A metaphor.  A literary device.  But here she was, physically trembling.  Not all of the static on her skin could be attributed to the lightning outside.
“Have you two even bothered to confirm that?” she asked. ”Or have you just gone around committing atrocities for the fun of it?”
“Don’t you take that tone with us, young lady! We’re just trying to keep you safe!”
“You’re not trying to keep anyone safe with your awful, deranged experiments! I don’t know how you even call yourselves scientists!”
Thunder crashed, as if it had only been waiting for her cue.
She looked between their shocked faces. Heaved one breath, two, and ran up the stairs towards her bedroom.
Maddie ran after her. “Jasmine Marie Fenton!”
Jazz whipped around and almost snarled at the look of indignation on her mother’s face.  Static jumped to her hand from the doorknob as she reached for it, but she didn’t flinch.  Instead, she squeezed it so hard she was surprised it didn’t come off.
(She was fairly certain the few dice she still held in her other hand had fractured.  It was too bad.  She’d liked those.)
“Do you two even hear yourselves?  ‘Especially the pretty ones?’ ‘The small ones just fall apart so easily?’ You want to see monsters?  Take a look at your reflections!”
WHAM.
Jazz looked at the darkness in surprise. She hadn’t expected the door to slam shut quite like that. It had rattled the windows with a force she’d felt in her chest. And then there was the darkness.
Oh. It was a power outage.
In the sudden quiet, Jazz heard her mother’s footsteps returning down the stairs, and then muted conversation. The front door opened, then shut.
She took the three steps to her window, and peered out.  Her parents were standing on the front stairs, headlamps strapped over their hazmat hoods and their arms full of pre-loaded net-launchers.
They were still going hunting, then. After all that.
Jazz turned from the window before either of them could look up at her watching them and get ideas about whether she regretted her words. She didn’t.
As she followed Jack out onto the street, Maddie sighed. “That girl, I swear. I don’t know where she gets these ideas in her head…”
Jack sighed. “I think it’s just a phase, Mads. Kids and the internet these days, you know?”
“Maybe,” Maddie said. She looked up at Jazz’s window before she turned her attention back to her husband. “Either way, I’m not thrilled with her tone. We’ll have to have a talk.”
“That’s the spirit!” Jack bellowed, grinning wide. “She’ll see that we were right, soon enough.  Everyone will, after we catch one of those dastardly fae!  Or a hobgoblin!  Or a vampire!  Or a sidewinder!  Or a dragon!”
“Yes, dear.  But first we need to figure out what took out the power, and…”  Maddie narrowed her eyes at the still-dark Fentonworks building behind them. “That’s strange. The generator should have brought everything back online by now.”
“I bet it was those dastardly gremlins! Well, if they think they’re gonna stop us from wrapping them all up in triple-strand hemp braid reinforced by silver-iron alloy, pinning them down with steel-jawed monster-chompers, or canning them up tight with the Fenton Thermos, then they’ve got another think coming!”
Lightning continued to flash overhead, bright enough to see color, and for the puddles and windows around them to flare brightly with reflected light.  The ozone and charge in the air, combined with the strange lighting and lack of normal city noises conspired to give a magical cast to the night.
Magical meaning dangerous, in Maddie’s vocabulary.
Usually, she wouldn’t leave the children home alone with the power off, but lightning alone wouldn’t knock out the electricity at Fentonworks, and they’d monster-proofed the backup generator to within an inch of its lifetime warranty.  Whatever was out here was their responsibility to deal with, as monster hunters.  Jazz, Danny, and his friends would be safe, behind the wards of Fentonworks.  This was for everyone else.  For all the citizens of Amity Park and the wider world who had been convinced that the supernatural didn’t exist, who were vulnerable, unprotected, unaware of the dangers they faced constantly.
Even if Jazz couldn’t appreciate that.
“This way!” cried Jack, shaking her from her partial reverie.
She shook her head before following him.  That was a bad habit to get into while on a hunt.  But then, fighting with her children had always unsettled her.
She followed Jack across the half-flooded road.  It would take days for things to dry, even if the rain let up.
But the rain would let up sooner or later.  This storm may or may not be natural in origin, but they had good evidence that there was at least one creature that could manipulate the weather in the region.  No such creature would allow clouds to reduce the amount of power it could gain from basking under a Blood Moon, much less a Blood Moon that was both a supermoon and a blue moon.
That only made it more important to catch whatever this was.  As excited as she and Jack were about the opportunity presented by the carelessness of monsters and the loss of their illusions, the lunar eclipse would be a dangerous time indeed.  Reducing the number of monsters present even by one would make everyone much safer.
Jack skidded to a stop and fired one of his nets.  Its weighted edges wrapped around the glass sides of a bus shelter.
“I think I really got it this time!” said Jack, bounding forward as Maddie covered him.  Nothing was going to sneak up on her husband on her watch.
On the other hand…
“Jack, sweetie, I don’t think there’s anything in the bus stop.”  Her goggles, which had been treated with their Fenton Paranormal Peeper Powder (not for direct use on eyes) (patent pending), weren’t picking up so much as a glimmer.
“Not in the bus stop!  Down there!”  Jack pointed at a storm drain just under the overhang of the bus stop shelter.
Gun ready, Maddie approached it.
The shadows between the grate bars gave way to the pale glare from her headlamp, throwing the inside into stark relief. The light sliced across water-stained concrete walls, reaching down until it met light.
The water at the bottom of the drain was stagnant, the drain so full of rotten leaves that they piled above the water in places, outlined in the brilliant white of her headlamp and bright enough to leave scribbled lines dancing in her vision.
The only motion Maddie could see in it was in her own face.
“Nothing,” she sighed. Chasing mirages again.  And wasn’t that a metaphor for life?
“Oh,” said Jack. His face appeared alongside hers in the water. “Sorry, Mads, I really did think I saw something.”
Maddie patted him on the shoulder and surveyed the surrounding street.  The light from her headlamp bounced off of the mirrors of parked cars and the windows of nearby businesses.  All dark.
But a few streets over, there was still light, still power.
“Maybe you did, but something interested in electricity is going to go that way.”  She pointed.  “Let’s sweep these streets.”
Jazz didn’t sleep until her parents made their way home, defeated.
She didn’t know if it was worry for them, as they ran around in a lightning storm, or if it was fear for everything else that could be out there that kept her awake.
But if she had to guess, it’d be the latter.
.
Omake:
“Well, uh. I guess game night’s over?” Danny asked. He was still under the table, having hidden when Jazz started yelling.
With a thunk, Tucker’s head met the table next to his laptop. It was followed by a swish, a rustle, and the clatter of dice falling to the floor. The room was still pitch black, only the occasional flicker of lightning casting any light.
“Well,” Sam sighed. “At least your house is never boring.” Danny let out a dry laugh, missing most of its humor.
“I could use a little more boring.”
“Good luck with that,” Tucker said, his voiced muffled by the table. Danny sighed, having not yet moved.
Good luck, indeed.
Stay tuned for more!
