while i’d love to read peoples reasonings for their answers, i’d ask that you don’t put your answer in the tags so that your followers aren’t influenced by your answer
i’ll try to edit this post with the answer shortly before the poll finishes so you can check when you get the poll complete notification!
reblogs appreciated! i want to get a feel for how people use/understand these terms

So I’ve been wanting to talk about this one unpopular opinion I have regarding Encanto, and it has to do with the infamous picture scene. Why? Well because I’m going to be honest, I think a A LOT of people misinterpret this scene, so I want to give my personal two cents on the matter. Keep in mind that these are MY opinions, so if you disagree, that’s completely okay! Without further adue, let’s discuss it.
Tumblr media
Near the opening of the film, we have Antonio’s ceremony, the character who is getting his gift 10 years after the last one didn’t work, that one being Mirabel’s. The family is relived when they figure out that it does work, and they all go into his magical rainforest room. To celebrate, the family decides to take a picture together, but of course, Mirabel isn’t there. Most people in the fandom always bring this scene up to support their argument on the mistreatment of Mirabel, and how her family doesn’t treat her the best. Many have said that they didn’t include her because she didn’t have a gift, as well as people also saying that they blatantly ignored her all night and should have noticed she wasn’t in the photo, so yeah it’s mainly people who claim that the family is awful to her. I’ll get to that, but let’s go slow.
So for a more in depth explanation, after Antonio returns on his jaguar, Abuela and the family celebrate, with her saying that they need a picture. Mirabel watches, her facial expression changing from happy to hurt. While Abuela tells EVERYONE to come, we see Mirabel stay STILL as the rest of the family get ready to take the picture. It’s happens within seconds, but one of the things I have to mention that apparently some people didn’t get was that it was MIRABEL who didn’t move. Abuela herself said “EVERYONE come”, and then it cuts back to Mirabel, who we can clearly see decided not to move or even try to get in the photo, not the other way around. I only say this because it kinda felt like a lot of people always acted as if Mirabel DID try to get into the picture, but the family purposely pushed her out of the way and went “Not you Mira, you suck, we’re not letting you in because you don’t have a gift lol”, cause that’s not what happened. I mean look, Félix and Agustín are there as well! The family never excluded her from the photo or said she couldn’t join, she CHOSE not to join, so some of y’all need to stop acting like they pushed her out of the frame or something. Anyway, of course the question begs why didn’t Mirabel try to join in? Well, as an audience member it isn’t spelled out of course, but one can come to the conclusion that she probably felt insecure, that she either didn’t want to show her face and was ashamed and embarrassed, or she felt she didn’t deserve to. THAT should have been people’s thoughts, not “they didn’t include her in the photo!”- but whatever. The correct answer to why she didn’t join though was given by director Jared Bush in one of his Q and A’s however.
Tumblr media
So there you go folks. Her family NEVER excluded her from the picture, she purposely didn’t join in because she felt she didn’t measure up to them. Which real quick, I have to say when I read this it made me emotional, poor Mirabel. ❤️
Anyway, regardless of if Mirabel wanting to join in or not, a lot of people of course wondered why nobody noticed Mirabel wasn’t there, and asked her to come. I honestly have a few things to say about this subject, but let me first say real quick that wether the family didn’t notice she wasn’t there, didn’t bother to ask her to join, OR was rushed and just had to take the picture as quickly as possible, whichever reason you think does NOT make the family horrible people. I know I sound like a broken record when it comes to this but I just have to say that, because once again people use this scene to paint the Madrigals as a bunch of monsters when they’re not. They clearly didn’t have a bias or anything against Mirabel being in the picture, or heck, they never had a bias against her in general, or more importantly, NONE of them had mean spirited ill intentions in this scene, and I’m kinda tired of people acting like it. That’s honestly the thing about how some people see the Madrigals in a nutshell. The whole point of the movie is that these characters are GOOD people, they just lost sight of what was important, (like you could say they were just so happy about Antonio getting a gift, that they unintentionally overlooked the one who didn’t have one) and while I’m not excuse anything, I WILL say that they’re not cold hearted monsters like some people are acting like. For me personally, I think the family just got swept up in everything going on, maybe they were rushed since the picture happens in seconds, or maybe they were all just caught up in the moment. I don’t think ANY of them we’re trying to be mean here, and that’s what some people need to understand. Usually when you’re in a situation like this, ESPECIALLY in a huge family, it’s not impossible to overlook someone. What I’m saying is, it’s clear they didn’t overlook Mirabel on purpose. That’s all I want people to understand, cause like I said, I’ve seen tons of people say “they didn’t include her in the picture because she doesn’t have a gift”- when that’s SO off. Now yes, someone could have asked “Hey, where’s Mirabel?”- but to me like I said, usually you don’t really check your surroundings in this situation. Most people are focused on themselves when they’re taking a picture, and to me personally, I see this scene as everyone just being caught up in the moment, eager to take a photo that they didn’t notice, that’s just MY opinion tho. However, it wouldn’t be a bad question to ask Jared if the family noticed she wasn’t in the picture, if you’re someone who wants confirmation!
The last important thing I want to say is why I think this scene was included. A lot of people interpret this scene as mean spirited, basically showing how Mirabel is the outcast of the family and how they don’t really include her because of her lack of gift. I see it a different way. For me personally, they of course not only included a scene like this to transition into “Waiting On A Miracle”, but I believe they created this scene to visually show how Mirabel feels like she doesn’t fit in with her family, like she doesn’t belong. When it comes to storytelling, ESPECIALLY musical storytelling, you want to create visuals that associate with the theme of your movie, your character. Since Mirabel feels like she doesn’t belong in this family because they all have gifts and her view on them is that they’re perfect and amazing, the image of her family on one side in the spotlight, and her on the other is a perfect way to symbolize to the audience how she feels out of place.
Tumblr media
I’d also like to add that for me personally, it would be weird if Mirabel WERE to get in the picture, only to stand out and face her family to start singing. That would look weird, so while her avoiding family pictures is sad and depressing af, it’s a better idea. However, again I kinda feel like people are missing the point of this scene, or even as a whole on what Mirabel feels. It’s not that she feels out of place because her family “treats her like shit” as some have said, she feels out of place because they all shine, they all have gifts, and she has none of that. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the treatment between her and her family at all, but even if you disagree with everything I’ve said, I will say that I just don’t like it when people misinterpret things from this film, or look at it through black and white lenses. People think this scene existed so the filmmakers could go “yeah her family shuns her out because of her lack of gift”, and that’s just not true. The family may not have noticed her or something, but that doesn’t really make them horrible people, that makes them flawed. Y’all need to understand that if you’re in a big family where literally everything is surrounded by your gift and you’re working constantly to uphold to that all your life, the member who doesn’t have any of that is going to get overlooked, even if it’s unintentional. Jared has confirmed that all these characters are going through their own things, they’re busy, and sometimes it’s going to be hard to keep track of certain things. Of course, we don’t have a straight answer on this subject, so I suggest asking Jared next Q and A on if the family didn’t notice her or whatnot, but the fact of the matter is that this scene obviously wasn’t intended to be mean spirited. You’re of course supposed to feel bad for Mirabel here yes, and again, y’all can disagree with anything I have said, that’s fine! I’m just kinda sick of people interpreting this scene as the family purposely pushing her away because they hate her and all that bs. Wether you agree with the actions of the family or not, all I ask is to please stop painting them as one note insensitive jerks.

Hi so... I already have some questions now that I've gushed about the game in another ask.
First one is about the lion MC.
Descriptions say they have round lion ears replacing their human ears. But does that mean the lion ears are situated at the sides of the head in the same place as the human ears were, or are the ears situated more atop of the head like the ears on an actual lion's head?
Also, since they have both "regular hair" and the mane, just how is the distribution between the two? And does the mane descend a bit over the shoulders and the back?
Yeah, I know, these are very specific questions, but I want to draw my MC so I need to know haha.
Also, I wanted to ask something else, about how the whole being a lust demon works.
So, the MC needs to be sexually active on a daily basis. But we can also have MCs who are exclusive with their partners AND monogamous... Does that mean on some days such a MC would have to deal with their needs on their own cause their partner wouldn't necessarily be into doing that everyday (and our fellow lust demon may simply be busy with a different partner since she's not exclusive), or all ALL the possible partners up to uh... "daily activity"?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for indulging into my very specific questions!
I also want to add I really like your unique take on the possible appeareances for the MC. The skin tones that depend on the MC's sin in particular are very interesting. I didn't even realize I was making a sinless MC (and making it very visible with the skin color) before I read your guide about that once I was done with my playthrough!
don't worry about sending questions, i'm happy to answer the ones i can!
first, re: the lion mc - the ears are positioned like a lion's ears would be, towards the top of the head. this also goes for other forms with replaced ears like the bat, bear and raccoon. as for the hair/mane mixture, i thought a lot about it when i was first writing the descriptions - a lot of things with cat/lion people in them just have All the person's hair be the mane but. i didn't want to override peoples' choices to have very curly or coily hair since a lion's mane is not like that.
basically when you're looking at a pic of a lion you can see that they have that very outer layer of more golden hair which is quite short and tufty in the parts on the top of their head but longer around the rest of the face... that part is the chief manifestation of lion mc's mane, and behind that on mc's scalp is the normal hair follicles. (this lion below has a very Distinct colour difference to make it easy to see)
Tumblr media
i hadn't planned for the mane to explicitly go down onto the back and shoulders because even adult lions have such a huge variation of mane size/volume and also. the humanoid shape made it hard for me to imagine that. however... i am not an artist haha. if while drawing your mc you think it would look better that way, you're probably more correct than i would be XD
as for your second question, this is something that's going to have kind of a divergent answer in watsonian/doylist interpretations lmfao. in the universe of the game, if your mc is only interested in one partner then there will inevitably be situations where they have to provide for themselves so to speak (whether that's because the RO is not in the mood or busy or Away or injured or what have you).
but within the scope of the Game, it's not going to be taking place over a super long period of time, and most of what time passage there is will be skipped over. i think it'll Probably be possible (don't quote me on this before i've written it all lmfao) for people to spend every single intimate scene of each day within the game's focus with the same RO for all of the ROs except for if you want to specifically Romance Malkorath... and maybe Twilit (though that one's still up in the air).
there will probably also be options down the line for mc to get into big arguments with ROs and in that case they might be too annoyed to sleep with you that day but. those will obviously be Conditional on you choosing the specific dialogue choices that start the fight XD either way, there's always going to be an option available for mc to take care of themself... the game isn't going to force you to choose an RO to explicitly sleep with every single time if you don't want to or can't get the one you want. i hope that makes sense as an explanation sdjbgdfg
lastly, thank you very much for your kind words! i'm glad you're enjoying the game!

18- soulmates with hoseokie pls🤍
thank you for doing this, i am so excited!!
It’s angsty! And I used the “invisible red string that only the two of you can see” idea
“This was supposed to be easy, wasn’t it?” You asked, looking down at the diaphanous red string on your finger. It went across your living room, connecting to the man you had met a little over a year ago. “Find your soulmate, a live happily ever after. Did we do something wrong?”
Hoseok shrugged, leaning back against the couch. He looked exhausted, and you were probably just the same. “It’s never that easy,” he answered. “We just have to work on some stuff.”
“We’ve been doing it for so long now, and we keep having these… stupid arguments over nothing,” you said. Just now, it had been the napkins he had bought — the cheapest ones, that hurt your face when you used them. It was like he did it on purpose, considering you had kindly asked for him to buy another type countless times before.“Maybe this isn’t meant to be.”
He laughed, sarcastic, and raised his index finger so you could see the string around it. “It quite literally is meant to be,” Hoseok corrected.
“Yeah, but I feel like neither of us want it.” You closed your eyes, fighting back tears. “I want to want it, though.”
“Maybe that’s the problem,” he argued. “Maybe we’re trying too hard to make it work. Maybe it is easy and we’re expecting too much.”
“Maybe,” you said. You were too tired to argue: the issue was the opposite: you two weren’t trying at all. All conversations about it had turned into excuses, deflections. “Whatever. It’s late. We’ll talk about that tomorrow.”
“Going to bed?” He asked. You agreed, getting up. “I’ll be there in a second.”
You mumbled something and went to the bedroom. You knew Hoseok would game until the sun was about to come up, and then make up some excuse on why he had to leave early. He didn’t even tell you where he went anymore, and you didn’t want to ask.
Every day the string on your finger seemed to grow lighter and lighter. What was once a vibrant red was now an almost transparent pink-ish color, which would shake in the wind and threaten to break at any given second. There was no doubt that Hoseok saw it too, but neither of you wanted to mention it. No one really talked about the possibility that maybe the strings were wrong, maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe some types of love just grow weaker with time and, eventually, fade away.

Hey m, what's your stance on separation of the art from the artist when it comes to the artist being of a questionable character?
And on a wholly separate note, did you ever talk of Letter and Jimin and Jungkook and if there's a case for interpreting the song as most shippers have done?
Wow, that is a totally separate note there, anon 😆
But let's start with the first part of your ask. I'm sure I've written about this in the past, but my tagging system is not the best. Anyway..
What I can tell you is that there is no definitive answer. Which is probably boring because we're "supposed" to pick a side and stick to it. Regardless of our position, it's almost expected for us to be radical. I've had this exact debate so many times, with people of different ages and backgrounds. It's an ongoing debate and I really don't think there is a correct way of looking at it. I think that the more we try and move away from an abstract position and rather look at the particularities, it would be easier to understand our own arguments and how/why we choose to accept or dismiss some people. Then we also have to keep in mind what is condered questionable character. Does its definition include a general understanding of a person that is accepted all across the board? Or our own character and world views influence the way we perceive other people? And sometimes, there's another element that perhaps it's easily explicable, but in my mind, it's the one about a lack of logic. I'll give you an example. It's close to impossible for me to rewatch CMBYN because of Hammer's cannibalism allegations, more than the ones of abuse against women. I also publicly and vehemently condemn Woody Allen because I believe he is guilty of what he's been accused of, but it doesn't mean I will also never watch Annie Hall. Does that say that I'm a bad person? A hypocrite? Maybe. But it also says that I can't help but be subjective depending on each singular situation and that some of my views don't have any logic even in my own mind.
But these are extreme cases, of people who had actual charges brought against them. There are countless others that are usually accused of wide range of things, from sexism, racism, homophobia to xenophobia, you name it. Everything under the sun. Some people will not care, while others will. It's an individual choice. Not only a moral one, but economic as well.
I'd like to end this though by saying that I personally don't expect art to be made only by morally righteous people. I think that's a dangerous trap that leads to just another type of extremism.
Now, the second part, a bit more fun!
The only time I mentioned Letter was in one of my early posts on the new blog. I said it reminds me of a studio Ghibli movie but that I also have a more personal attachment to it.
I know how it's been interpreted by jikookers. I personally don't subscribe to the theory, but not for some major reason. I think it's nice Jimin had Jungkook do the backing vocals and seeing him sing during a livestream was moving. That's sort of enough for me. I think it's perfectly possible for the song to really be a letter to his fans. What I'm trying to say is that as much as it is really sweet, if it's for Jungkook or not, it doesn't have a major bearing on my opinion regarding them.
But I want to be very clear that just because I believe that, it doesn't mean I have an issue or condemn any jikooker who believes in the theory that it's a song for JK and about them. It's a harmless theory that is not based on any toxic or weird narrative. People should be free to talk about it, without having condescending anons or bloggers making fun of it or even criticising it too harshly. I've seen that happen a lot after the album was released.
P.S. Anon, I just saw your second ask. I'd rather stick to my answer as it is now, without going into any RM specifics as of today. I'm not in the mood for that.

Ok, I love reading your asks and your replied to them (never thought of Sylki Darkfic before but you are so right, selflessly possessive Loki being low-key creepy would be fitting). So I want to hear your two cents about this:
Sylvie has no reason to learn how to trust or suddenly be able to trust in S2. As you said, Loki doesn't give her a reason to trust him, it's almost like he just nags her till she gives up. The TVA are still pruning the Timelines (Dox) and they are still indifferent to the Timelines being pruned (Mobius). Sylvie could have seen the chance of the TVA agents redeeming if she had any interactions with B-15, but she doesn't. After trying to hope for the best, they failed at accomplishing whatever they dragged her from her life on the Timeline for.
So, does Sylvie get any development at all, or is she there to be the hysterical anti-cop mouthpiece as the other anon said?
okay first of all my disclaimer on this one is that while i have indeed come to appreciate the male sylvie loki as a character i did first get dragged in by sylvie so i tend to take her side on things because she is the superior blorbo.
(i put this behind a read-more thingy cos it got a bit long)
my feels on sylvie this season are that she's been demoted from 'her quest for revenge is the main driver of the plot' to 'isn't it awful that she makes the man upset by understandably-yet- foolishly disagreeing with him?' she's not had a pivotal moment with B-15 because sylvie in s2 is (so far) primarily there to make loki feel sad. she had that lovely end-credits bit of discovering the McDonalds Burgermatic Universe but then we didn't see that after all, we just skipped to her working on a till apparently established in her new life. there's two episodes left so this could all change but the first half has not been that great on the sylvie front :'(
even the fact that (someone correct me if i'm wrong pls as it is very possible) loki shows up at mcdonalds mostly because he saw her in a lift in the previous episode and assumes this means she will know about... her own future? somehow? or possibly because he knows she's one of the main characters and so she needs to be brought into this new plotline. or for emotional reasons but he obviously can't so much as hint at that to her in case they resolve their relationship issues too early. (how can sylvie expect him to tell her the truth about these things? it was only the second episode and that's far too early! what a daft bint she is!)
people get mad at sylvie for not being nice enough to loki but she's got a normal-seeming life now that she appears to enjoy, and him turning up (in a TVA uniform with his cop buddy AND THEIR PRISONER) demanding answers she doesn't have and telling her to just accept that The Cops Are Good Now Actually, Apart From All The Ones Who Aren't so like... why would she go out of her way to be polite and helpful about keeping the TVA running?
i don't think she's intended to seem like a hysterical rebel, but we're not being shown things from her perspective as much as before and we assume (we could be wrong about this but we do assume) that as the main character loki is going to turn out to be right about most of these things and we don't really get a balanced set of arguments, which seems to be partly because we need to hold off on these characters actually discussing anything so that we can ensure that loki stays sad about her until such time as he can be rewarded for his work on the time loom by the lifting of that sadness (or whatever).
there's still two episodes left though, which is enough time to turn this around a bit, perhaps by showing us a bit of sylvie's new life or by having some proper discussions/arguments about whatever the fuck the TVA are supposed to be doing now. so my feelings are currently mixed. could turn out fine, could end up crap. OH THE TENSION D: D: D:

I just have to say that I clearly need to read the books again bc I’m missing evidence in the argument that it’s “obvious” Elain/Az have “been building for several books.” They had some moments, sure. However, (correct me if I’m wrong) they didn’t meet in the first book. The second book, and possibly third, they were still individually in love with other people. Elain/Grayson and Az/Mor. Once they were kind of the odd ones out, they seem to come together in a comforting/rebound sort of way. Nesta and Cassian were together or at least arguing lol. Feyre and Rhys were together or at least good friends… so who is left? Elain and Az. That doesn’t mean love or even romance? I also understand that Az is so desperate for a mate & that he kind of would gravitate towards Elain bc he feels like it “makes sense” to have the third sister. That also doesn’t mean love or romance. Idk…. Maybe I’m not seeing it or maybe I just interpreted things differently from the start. Though Elain/Lucien and Gwyn/Az all have some healing and growth to go through… I think they can actually eventually be very healthy couples. And I like them all individually, so I’m hoping for a happy ending for them all. Also, not to be dramatic….but the 3 brothers and 3 sisters thing makes me gag and if that happened, idk if I would recover. 😂

Their big moment from ACOMAF is Azriel answering Elain's question about Illyrian's flying.
But.....Elain was only trying to cut through the tension between Cassian, Feyre, and Nesta so she turned to Azriel to ask him the question. And Azriel was only self-conscious because he doesn't like when the attention is on him (which is PROVEN later in the series when Mor and Cassian laugh at a joke he made. This characteristic of Az has NOTHING to do with romance or Elain).
And before that we have, "but Azriel's attention was on my sister, a polite, bland smile on his face."
Ain't no romance like a bland smile romance 😒
That's the thing with E/riel. Everything is "peace and quiet, soft, gentle, bland, polite." And if you have ever read a fantasy book, especially a fantasy book by SJM, THESE ARE NOT GOOD THINGS TO INDICATE AN ENDGAME COUPLE!!!!!!
And in the same novel, we have:
"Mor breezed to my side. She wore a gown of pure white, little more than a slip of silk that showed off her generous curves. Indeed, a glance over her shoulder revealed Azriel staring blatantly at the back view of it, Cassian and the stranger already too deep in conversation to notice what had drawn the spymaster's attention. For a moment, the ravenous hunger on Azriel's face made my stomach tighten."
And.....
"Not the cold, beautiful shadowsinger who tried so hard not to watch her with longing on his face?"
And....
"The issue, actually, wouldn't be me. It'd be him. I could peel off my clothes right in front of him and he wouldn't move an inch. He might have defied and proved those Illyrian pricks wrong at every turn, but it won't matter if Rhys makes him Prince of Velaris - he'll see himself as a bastard-born nobody, and not good enough for anyone. Especially me.
And....
"Azriel's head lifted from where he was sprawled in his own blood, eyes full of rage and pain as he snarled at the king, "Don't you touch her." Mor looked at Azriel - and there was real fear there. Fear - and something else. She didn't stop moving until she again kneeled beside him and pressed a hand to his wound. Azriel hissed - but covered her bloody fingers with his own.
So what's really romantic coding here? Azriel staring with hunger and longing at Mor and never being willing to make a move because he doesn't think he's worthy or Feyre thinking Elain would seek out Az for peace and quiet? One is passion and one is what I'd do with my grandma.
I am almost positive SJM originally planned on Az and Mor ending up together in ACOMAF until she decided she needed more inclusivity in the series and made Mor bisexual in ACOWAR. Which means when she made Elucien mates in ACOMAF, she wasn't remotely thinking about E/riel being a thing.
And then she changed the direction of Mor in ACOWAR which means she needed to created a new storyline for Az and a way that Elain and Lucien needed to avoid one another until it was time for them to accept the bond in their own book. They needed not to fall for one another while she was still mourning the loss of Graysen.
SJM couples do NOT fall in in love with their endgame person while still in love with someone else. She ALWAYS makes sure the reader knows the FMC is over their past love before falling for someone new.
Enter....the E/riel rebound!
Every single moment people think E/riel has in ACOWAR is followed by imagery of why they wouldn't match. It's followed by the fact that he's still hung up on Mor and she's still hung up on Graysen. There is NO love building between them. Then by the end of that book and in ACOFAS, we see Az starting to realize he may never be with Mor and Elain realize she may never get to return to Graysen. So they latched on to the convenient other single person within their orbit that they're "fine" with. That they feel "comfortable" with. Again, not SJM endgame material. And for God's sakes, Elain is in the room on Solstice while Az looks at Mor with yearning! What the hell kind of romance is that?! Elain's obviously chopped liver when Mor's around 🤔
That's why Gwynriel and Elucien's arguments are so strong, because we don't even need to add Lucien or Gwyn to any of this to make it obvious as to what's going on. And that's why Lucien and Gwyn will be endgame because they are separate from the Mor / Az, Elain / Graysen mess. There are no feelings of love involved with Gwynriel or Elucien right now but there is absolutely an overlap between canon evidence of Az being in love with Mor and Elain being in love with Graysen and E/riels saying Elain and Az are in love.
I'm about tired of their "go back and read the book" arguments considering we can refer back to multiple scenes involving multiple characters outside of just the Elucien or Gwynriel ones versus them, who can only recite E/riel moments. I think it's pretty obvious which readers have actually read the book.

For the Ask Game, maybe Luisa?
EEEEE LUISA TIMMMEEEE!
Luisa
Tumblr media
⚧ - Pronoun hc: she/her
🏳️‍⚧️- Gender hc: cis female
🏳️‍🌈- Orientation hc: straight or bi with a preference for men. Idk she just gives that vibeeee.
🌌- zodiac sign hc: Luisa was born on November 14th, making her a scorpio! I was actually quite surprised by that, she doesn't really give major scorpio energy lol.
🧠- MBTI/Enneagram hc: with my novice knowledge, I think she'd be a INFP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idealistic is a pretty good description for Luisa I think. I mean:
Tumblr media
She likes to dream🥺🥺🥺
Factors that influenced my decision:
Are you outwardly or inwardly focused? Extraversion or introversion?
Despite Luisa being seen around town a lot; interacting with people, she still chooses to do so alone and with as little interaction with the villagers as possible. She doesn't have any small talk with them or even speaks first, she just answers to the calls of "Luisa! X needs fixing." And says, "Okay!" Then does it. Also, her dream is to just relax and sleep, she's a poor introvert with a extroverts job.
How do you prefer to take in information? Sensing or intuition?
I chose intuition for this one; despite how Luisa feels very stuck in her job and believes that it is what she needs to do, she still enjoys imagining the possibilities of how things could be, based on how easily she talked about her dream scenarios with Mirabel, like she's already very familiar with them and only now has had a chance to be open about them.
How do you prefer to make decisions? Thinking or feeling?
Feeling. We're talking about Luisa here.
A thinking person, would be described as: making decisions in an impersonal way, using logical reasoning. Enjoy finding the flaws in an argument. Could be described as reasonable, level-headed.
Luisa is a very emotional person, which can come as a surprise to some people who just judge her on looks. The decisions she makes aren't logical: she resorts to hurting herself and working to exhaustion to protect other people. Believing that not carrying all the donkeys 'properly' would "let everyone down."
How do you prefer to live your outer life? Judging or perceiving?
Perceiving. I like to think Luisa would settle into a outright 'perceiving' role after the movie. I feel like it'd really benefit her and make her feel less stressed if she tuned into that more spontaneous and flexible side we only see when she quickly takes on tasks. I think because of all the stress she doesn't allow herself to live how she is actually programmed to, instead modifying it to a detrimental degree to fulfil others needs.
❤- OTP hc: don't have one and although I don't usually make love interest ocs(correction: I've never made one lol), I think it'd be so cute for her to have a major simp of a boyfriend, who'd be the opposite of her in every way lol.
🧡- Everyone I ship with this character: 0
💛- Brotp: the blue sisters 💙 they deserve to be bffs😭 (this isn't romantic tho. Dont get it TWISTED😤😤)
💚- Notp: anything gross🤢
💙- Crossover ship: 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
💜- Crossover non-ship relationship I like: imagine her and merida hanging out. Think about it😌😳
📖- AU I'd like to see them in: HERCULES AU COME THROUGHHHH
❤🩹- Angsty hc: she's a naturally angsty girl. I think, even though she doesn't physically feel the weight of things, carrying things and overworking her muscles can cause her to come out in bruises and pains. She has a lot of tense muscles, this girl could use a good massage😌😌😌
💖- Happy hc: she loves princess stories and disgustingly romantic stuff 💖 she often daydreams about handsome princes and stuff, she's never really grown out of it lol. she seems like the type to stim a lot, like me AHH🤪🤪. Like, if she's happy and can't stay still, I feel like she'd pace around the room and jump about. I'm exposing myself here lol😭😭
😋- Funny/stupid hc: when she was little she could burp the alphabet. Isabela taught her how.
🥖- Food hc: she eats like an athlete, she definitely makes sure she's eating enough so she can continue to work out. Still, its somehow not as much as what Camilo eats😭 I think she'd have a big breakfast, a big lunch and a big dinner, with snacks in between, of course.
🪞- Appearance hc: she has 0 or very little acne, making all her siblings and cousins very jealous and confused. I like to think, because of working out, she'd have some visible viens on her hands or arms, she has high blood pressure, yall.
🏡- Domestic hc: Agustín and Julieta still call her a little girl or their little Luisa🥰💗 Agustín still buys fairytale things he sees in town for her🥰
🛌- Sleep hc: she was always jealous of Isabelas princess bed. I think after the fall of Casita, she'd get a canopy bed instead. She sleeps on her back and snores silently. The epitome of a sleeping beauty😭
🗡- Badass hc- she'll jump in front of anyone to protect them, as seen in the movie. She also knows her gymnastics and can make a jaw dropping, back flipping entrance if she wants too.
Tumblr media
She can be very graceful as she does it too.
❓- Anything else you want: if this was a modern au, this girl would watch toy unboxings and collect toys 🥰 I already think she'd collect dolls anyway lol, as I said, Agustín would see them and still buy them for her, she'd set them up on a shelf above her bed. Now that she has free time, she'd go out in town and buy some herself and maybe, take part in hilarious, very serious doll trading debates with the village kids, Mirabel would be witness to these and be very enthralled.

My internal debate about being a guest in Hawai’i and the Maui fires.
I’m debating this again in my head since the fires on Maui started. It got sparked by a TikTok and a few tumblr posts that I saw that basically said “see, this is why people shouldn’t move here, colonizers/tourists are taking away resources from people who actually need it.” I’m basically having this debate in my head over the ethics of living here, and moving here, and whether or not I’m being overly defensive/kneejerk when I see arguments like “don’t come here.” The conflict goes something like this:
Part of me knows that, at a systemic level, the system runs off of tourism money, and absolutely favors colonizers and tourists, and by moving here I’ve contributed to this and continue to do so by my presence. The resources of the islands are already strained and exploited, and these fires are evidence of that. This is all compounded by the fact that I’m white, and am protected by and made physically safe by the system in question.
However, another part of me knows that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and that being forced to participate in the flawed system is not the same as actively supporting the system. I did not move here to live in a pretty paradise, I moved here because I answered a request from a company that is based here that does good work, that I believe is actually contrary to the system’s interests (construction companies would not hire Archaeologists or Cultural Monitors if they didn’t have to legally). I’m not exactly in a position to go to any of the resorts or do the tours or anything like that, and try to shop local where possible.
Part of me thinks that the main problem is not the tourists themselves, but the system that misallocates resources, and that the main solution to that problem is a revolution, or at least a socialist reform (although idk if reform would solve the whole issue, but that’s another discussion). That revolution is going to have to pull from the lower, middle and upper classes in order to succeed. The latter two of those are the only two who are able to with any sort of consistency, come to Hawaii. Therefore, the argument “don’t come here” is mostly targeted at them. But, the people who don’t care about BIPOC in Hawaii won’t bother listening to that argument, because it’s made BY those same groups. This leaves the only people who would listen to this statement and not come are the people who would more than likely join in or at least support the revolution. Therefore, that argument isn’t helpful, because it actually weakens the power of the community that backs the changes that need to be made.
However, another part of me says that I don’t want to be that white guy who tells BIPOC “oh, you shouldn’t argue this way, that’s not helpful.” White moderates have said that at basically every step of the history of change in US and they have never once been correct. It’s actively harmful to say. So then, should I even bother thinking any of that revolutionary stuff I mentioned earlier would be helpful or even ethical to bring up? Am I just being reactionary because I don’t want to be perceived as a colonizer (I know I am one, it’s a rhetorical question)? Is it as black and white as “locals good, tourists bad, so don’t come here?” Do I even do good work through archaeology at all? Is the “don’t come here” argument based on isolationist xenophobia? Or is that my capitalist indoctrination telling me to ignore what BIPOC are saying??
I don’t know the answer to any of these questions and am super super torn up. Either way, I’d already planned to leave HI at some point in the next year when I can get a job on the mainland (if anyone knows anything over 24/hr lmk lmao) so it’s not as though these arguments are falling on deaf ears. But looking back on this whole part of my life, I am beginning to be unsure if it’s something I can be proud of. I think that archaeology is revolutionary action, and that building community around cultural heritage is an important boost to leftist movements. I’m going to continue to support the pro-independence movement here, even when I don’t live there anymore, but man every time I see one of those kinds of posts it makes me think and worry.

Basically, the issue that's causing the anti-Dadrius folks is the same thing that caused so many issues in the Miraculous fandom, the Gravity Falls fandom, etc.: past generations thought "everyone who disagrees with me is wrong". Today's generation thinks, "everyone Secretly Agrees with Me Already, but some psychological dysfunction is preventing them from seeing things properly". So, today's fans are obnoxious because they don't think the rest of us are wrong, they think we're Brainwashed (TM).
I have seen the argument that some people online think that they're so correct that everyone does agree with them, but is just hiding it for whatever reason. That they're using the argument that: "you have no reason to trust anything a stranger online tells you," to justify completely making up everybody else's personality. But I've mostly seen that attitude in people who think: "Maybe we shouldn't act like asses 24/7 when online," should always be answered with: "This is the internet! Everybody's an ass!" while the fact that someone just politely asking them to be less of an ass should already be evidence to the contrary. "Everybody else is an ass, so I am justified." Basically, they feel they're so correct, they don't actually write any proper counterarguments despite being the one to start the argument.
There is more to the tendency to try to pick fights in fandom spaces, though. I feel stuff like tag-bombers and post-hijackers are a result of more people online disregarding the concept of personal space, even in a digital space. Like, how often does someone defend hopping onto someone else's post with something combatative with: "You posted this publically online, so I'm justified in arguing with you," completely forgetting the possibility that the post might be trying to reach like-minded individuals? They definitely show the Everyone Secretly Agrees With Me attitude in viewing this behavior as okay when they're called out on it.
These people also actively stalk the tags used by people who disagree with them to find posts to argue with, or just post their opposing takes but tag them with the tags used by the people who are guaranteed to disagree with their posts. They often play coy ("I used the ship tag because I'm talking about the ship no other reason I swear!"), but tag-bombing is about picking fights. Basically, everything is treated as an invitation to debate, every topic as something suitable to debate over and every other fan as a willing debate partner.
I've seen people lamenting how we no longer use phrases like: "Don't like, don't read." Basically, fandoms can no longer just accept that one group of people thinks this way and another group of people thinks that way and if you feel too strongly about mutually exclusive takes, you probably should avoid each other for the sake of having a lighter fandom space. Shipping wars have always been a thing, and could get pretty ugly, but these days people seem to feel so strongly about everything and feel the need to prove that they're correct more often than before.
For many, it used to be enough to privately think you are right and chuckle with your like-minded friends over how everyone else is wrong, but now you have to prove that your way of thinking is actually the most logical one. Like you said, these people think that the only reason anyone thinks differently from them is that they don't know any better and they just need to be educated, because, surely, if they knew all the facts, they'd agree with the "obvious correct take".
Some fandom behaviors have gotten more exhausting, is what I say.

I am in love with your liveblog (as a finished Umineko reader). Thank you for sharing your journey! One of the best parts of finishing Umineko is seeing other people theorize about it lol. I am curious- what did you know about Umineko going in? Also I’d love to hear about your favorite/least favorite characters thus far. Or if you’ve got a favorite moment so far too.
ah thanks! <3
as to answer what i knew about umineko going in - it's a super long murder mystery, someone compared it to the homestuck epilogues (the thing which made me choose to read it), and a sizeable portion of my mutuals are really into it. my only quote unquote "spoiler" that i kind of have going in which isn't too much of a spoiler is that at some point in the story the golden witch beatrice will make a physical appearance (if only because so many people use her sprites for their icons on the internet). other than that i really didn't have much foreknowledge, and i especially knew nothing about the characters/events/settings before i started.
my top five faves as of right now are kanon then shannon then maria then battler then jessica. kanon and shannon more because of the theories i have made up in my head about them than anything specifically they've done in the text so far (that said kanon being mad at gohda/the ushiromiyas is kind of iconic...that boy is very much teetering on earning the coveted blorbo status) but maria is objectively great, a perfect angel child who can and will never do a thing wrong in her life and is also correct about everything. battler and jessica get the last two spots because a) they're actually rather endearing as characters and b) they make up the remainder of the Least Evil People On Rokkenjima group.
characters i don't outright dislike but i think would be interesting to examine more are rosa and natsuhi. like they both occupy such interesting positions in the power-abuser-powerless-abused cyclical dynamic. individuals preyed upon within the ushiromiya hierarchy who exert power and abuse over those even lesser than them. very fucked up. very interesting.
despite what it may seem like i don't Hate george but reading anything to do with him is so pitifully embarrassing and unless he gets a character arc i would not be mad if i didn't hear from him again. it's like. Why Are You Such A Loser.
kinzo is evil and i hate him on principle but also he's kind of funny. wet pathetic old man so encaged in his ivory tower of abuse and violence and power and he is unironically engaging in a blood ritual to resurrect a murderwitch he made a faustian bargain with, not for any purpose other than to ogle over her one last time. he's garbage. he's trash. i hope he fails in the worst way possible.
i've got a couple standout moments so far. the first is the first sibilng argument in the parlor where they all gang up on krauss and then turn on each other. i cherish the ushiromiya failson/faildaughter petty greed thunderdomes like nothing else, even though i now know that most people apparently don't like these scenes??
other good scene is the dinner with the letter. love the way it's every emotion at once and maria gets to have her moment as the messenger of beatrice and also the adults once again tear each other apart, and also gohda's atmosphere gets ruined. i think i'm obsessed with seeing this family self-destruct.
maybe contender for another good scene is the jessica/natsuhi moment in chapter 8. not an absolute fave but i do appreciate seeing that other side of things.
my other standout is not exactly a scene but the atmosphere building in anticipation of the golden witch's arrival. the omens and the music and the slowly mounting sense of dread are so good. umineko is so well written i love it.

I dont at all think you intended it this way (and you don't at all need to publicly respond to this ask), but the post you recently reblogged from midnightssea contains a lot of gateway-TERF ideology (setting up men as inherently/naturally/biologically oppressors and women as a inherently/naturally/biologically oppressed class; drawing false equivalences; presenting this argument in hard absolutes with language like, "if you believe this, you're not really a feminist"). Often--not always! But often--this kind of mild, measured, not obviously TERF-y feminist discourse is used as a reasonable gateway to attract smart, compassionate, thoughtful people to agree with some base tenets of this ideology and ultimately encourage sympathy to more radical claims. Again, I'm not saying any of this to publicly call you out! That post just contains a few dog whistles and I want to make sure that you can hear them.
I’ve been scrolling through my blog for minutes to figure out which damn post you mean only to figure out that I reblogged that on my main @librinaut and not here. I feel kinda pressured to answer this, which is stupid in itself but I will post this to my feel-good blog even though I don’t like discourse here. This is meant in the kindest way possible, I am just not very good at not sounding passive aggressive. First of all, because it seems to be so important on tumblr to check every OP we reblog from lol, as you can see when you click on the original post, midnightssea specifially dislikes transphobia and tagged that post accordingly. Secondly, I have been following her for quite some time and she knows exactly what she is talking about when she is addressing feminist issues. I have a background in sociology and I have read my very fair share of theory so I might be in an ok position to judge that. I am not naive, I am educated in this matter and I know exactly what I am talking about or agreeing to. Nothing what she says has a hidden meaning and everything she says is correct. Now that’s out of the way: I think it’s incredibly heart breaking how basic feminist theory gets called a “dog whistle” or a “gateway” as if we are talking about a dangerous ideology here. Again, I am educated in those things and I hate how on tumblr or twitter terms like that are thrown around without any background or meaning. You seem to already have an issue with what OP directly said. Direct meaning isn’t a dogwhistle. I can guarantee you that OP dislikes transphobes, so there isn’t even a hidden meaning behind what you already disagree with. If neo-nazis (people who actually use dogwhistles especially in real life public settings) were using dogwhistles like that a lot of people in law enforcement etc would have much easier jobs. So no, dog whistles don’t work like that. In fact I have yet to see an actual dog whistle when tumblr calls one out. What OP talked about is basic knowledge, proven by statistics and historic records over and over again. If facts in regards to feminism are “problematic” then we are heading for some wild times the next decades. I also don’t quite grasp how what she wrote has anything to do with trans people. I heavily dislike how we are using terms such as “transphobia” “dog whistle” etc to describe the most basic grounds of feminism. Also painting it as if trans people are somehow all inherently opposed to feminism or the fight against patriachal structures. Which in turn at least my trans friends would find quite insulting. This is such a great example of how tumblr shoots itself in the seemingly progressive foot. In the sense of “Hitler was a vegetarian, let’s cancel animal activism” we are cancelling truly progressive, useful terminology and facts because some people who are deemed problematic are also using them alongside things we don’t like. Ultimately damaging progress in the name of owning whoever we want to own. I’m seeing this in a lot of instances, not just with this example. This is not meant in a mean or condescending way but seriously, without a personal moral compass all of us are in danger of falling for blind ideology and hollow buzzwords. I love when people disagree with me because it makes me question my own opinion and gives me an opportunity to expand or change it. But just talking about how something is problematic because it uses certain words isn’t an opinion I can argue against or expand my own knowledge with. It’s like a cardboard cut out of an opinion and I know I will only argue against buzzwords instead of against true arguments. If you are interested in discourse or theory or want to know where I come from: I base my current socipolitical ideological framework roughly around Engels “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State”, which gives a great overview of material thinking in regards to class analysis even though I am not agreeing with him on everything. But it’s more about HOW to think and not WHAT to think. It gives some good food for thought regarding feminist class analysis in a capitalist framework though. For data and statistics I recommend “invisible women” by Caroline Criado-Perez and the Women’s Atlas (there are new ones every few year I think?). It’s mainly just numbers and you can form your own opinion based on that. A lot of times there are pdfs of these books floating around somewhere. And lastly: This and my main blog focus on feminist issues and just... on women and my attraction to women. Under “mp” on this blog (blood-and-poetry) you can find some of my posts about TV shows and characters that will paint a pretty clear picture on what my personal views are. If you feel uncomfortable with that (which is fair. I have some strong opinions) you can of course unfollow me. Again not meant in an “ugh go away stupid anon” way but in a “maybe we just don’t have anything valuable to contribute to each others life” way. Despite all of this I am thankful for your kind tone and your honest concern! In turn, I am showing some friendly concern and I hope you can read it as such. Take care anon

Here is a part of my final paper on Descartes and what I chose to write about- Cartesian doubt and Kierkegaard’s despair in the discovery of the true self. Descartes isn’t the awful guy you think he is, give it a chance. May I also add I got an A on this. Carry on if you’re interested.
How can we truly know meaning or meaninglessness when so many contradictions arise, how do I know what I am doing is the correct answer? How do I know that God does not want me to suffer and I can truly depend on my thoughts to uncover the truth if I am depending on my own thoughts to prove the existence of God and through that the belief that I am endowed with the abilities to rely on my own thoughts? These questions help illustrate the contradictions which arise when trying to understand Descartes and the process of relying on oneself for the truth of oneself. If I was being deceived by reality, why would God allow that to happen if God is good and exists and is not a deceiver? We must understand that with the notion that God endowed us with rational abilities of distinguishing truth from falsity, God is not deceiving us because he is allowing us to understand the world through deception. Yet how can I depend on my own thoughts when everything I used to know is an illusion? We have to understand that this is about freedom as we understand anxiety and despair come from freedom. Many contradictions arise when trying to understand Descartes, contradictions involving God’s goodness and existence in the context of mastering oneself. Yet we must follow Descartes truth argument to understand we are not deceived by God and we can depend on our own thoughts. The understanding is in the fact that we have freedom for error but we also have freedom to have clear and distinct ideas. We make mistakes because our will is greater than our intellect. If we only believe things according to our mind (our intellect) then we will eliminate error. How can we even believe we have the capacity to think these things if god allowed all of this evil and deception of the world? We must understand that evil is created by humans and depends on freedom and responsibility, same for error. God only creates contradictions because he wills us to understand. We will never be able to truly understand and discover the truth as there are too many possibilities and too much freedom, so we must understand that if we believe god exists and believe we have the abilities to choose right from wrong he is allowing this process of truth discovery and thus self discovery to happen. If these truths we have discovered end up to be fake, then god is a deceiver because he created our mind, yet what meaning does that bring? If one is empowered by despair and the discovery of a true self, one will not give up on the search for the true self, as the idea of being deceived and thus everything being false is extremely impractical for life. When contradictions arise, it is important to rely on clear and distinct ideas, ideas which rely on nothing except your own thoughts. God can create contradictions, but if God wills something- it is necessary. We can understand this as God is an infinite being whos methods cannot be comprehensible to finite beings incapable of such. We see that going through the cartesian circle is also impractical, as proving oneself can become impractical for life as it takes away your freedom.
God has given us freedom, which produces anxiety, allowing us to pursue discovery of our true selves, what Kierkegaard has so emphasized. Everything must be based on our own self. Mastering yourself is finding purpose or meaning. You may find that everything you know is meaningless, but it is the goal to move past that for practical life. You must find meaning despite the meaninglessness and evil in the world. Though this does not mean you should not turn to evil, as it implies weakness (lack of power). We must secure an objective mind through critical and rational understandings of the realities of modernity, thinking which is free from the outside influence (which are things that do not have value because they do not depend on you), to be able to understand that that there is no worldwide objective truth and what matters the most is the truth for ourselves as long as we see the world and aim to change ourselves rather than the world, as others will not find truth in your own personal truth, it must become a learning experience collectively. If you find the power within yourself, by thinking critically and rationally, you can do things honestly. It cannot be a matter of searching for answers, it must be a process of asking the right questions, questions which are essential to your own personal growth and understanding. It is as Descartes emphasizes in his emphasis on the importance of being clear in language, as what we say is not always what we mean due to the bounds of language. Thus, we must uncover the ways in which we can facilitate proper and clear communication of meaning and the only way to do this is through asking more questions and continuing the consistent critical thinking. Although consistencies inevitably lead to inconsistencies it is up to ourselves to establish what is important to take a stance on and what to believe.
As we now understand, Descartes and Kierkegaards doubt and subsequent despair are realities which lead to the discovery of the true self. Yet, one should not get lost in staring into the abyss if it has no practicality for life. Sure, become an existential thinker and believe that everything is meaningless but only if you kill yourself, as you may believe that life is meaningless but actually imputting it into reality does not allow for the discovery of the truth. In this, the discovery of truth and knowledge as Descartes emphasize is truly the discovery of one’s true self. We may understand that the truth is scary and the truth holds much responsibility, as how can we cope with the reality of meaninglessness when such provides no hope for possibility. Meaninglessness, as we understand, becomes a trap of thinking which allows us to get stuck in deeper despair, thus the only way out of it is to find meaning. The truth is not worth it if you are not powerful enough to keep seeking knowledge, as you understand that the more you discover the unhappier with the world you will get. Yet, one who can truly understand the purpose of critical thinking and finding the truth will move towards the discovery of ones true self, even if that means living a life of meaninglessness to find meaning. It is such cartesian circle-esque notions, which illustrate contradictions and deception, that allow us to understand the most important concept from Cartesian thought. You must rely on your own thoughts and process of doubt to understand that everything is meaningless, thus you have to make a meaning for yourself. You cannot run from despair, rather learn from it. Live your life. It should not be a question of is truth worth it, rather what is it worth. To truly understand the world around you, you must discover yourself first. You cannot change the world, rather you must change yourself- think critically and when reality seems so bad that you may turn to nihilism, all you can really do is laugh.

This is the most shocking thing in cricket that I have ever heard of. What the Australians did was within the rules, so cannot really be called “cheating” but it was so far outside the spirit of sportsmanship that I cannot see the point of playing them again. If they are so keen to win that they will stoop to tricks as low as this, then I say “let them keep the Ashes for ever. It isn’t worth bothering with scum like that”.
My cricket correspondent will doubtless disagree with my view, as he revels in being contrary. I will therefore demolish his arguments before he comes out with them.
1. “You wouldn’t object if England had done this”: utter nonsense. Of course I would. I would disagree very much with such conduct, but being English, I would have to carry on supporting them.
2. “It is done all the time in club cricket”. So what - it doesn’t make it right even if so.
3. “Barstow has done the same thing himself when playing as wicket keeper”. I don’t know whether he has or he hasn’t. It doesn’t matter. It’s immaterial - two wrongs don’t make a right.
4. “Barstow was careless. He should have known better. He got what he deserved”. Probably correct on all three - BUT, it still doesn’t make it right to give him out.
5. “It isn’t cheating. It’s in the rules”. Yes, I agree, but sometimes the law is an ass - see below. The particular rule we are concerned with is in place to stop a batsman stealing a run. If Barstow HAD been attempting to steal a run, it would have been fully justified to run him out/stump him. The problem is that it is obvious to anyone with half a brain that he WASN’T trying to steal a run.
6. “England lost because they batted disgracefully in the first innings. The defeat was nothing to do with the Barstow stumping”. Nothing to argue with there, I totally agree. It has nothing to do with the central argument though: what the Australians did was the worst gamesmanship since Trevor Chappell bowled underarm to stop the possibility of a six off the last ball of the match. They only did it because they knew that Barstow was a good batsman who was capable of hitting the runs. Does anyone in their right mind think they would have done it against number 11 batsman James Anderson with 100 still needed to win - NOT A CHANCE.
7. “The umpire hadn’t called over. The ball was therefore still in play”. This is the technicality that lets the Australians get away with it. It is also why I say, according to the rules, “out” is the only decision they can make. This is bunkum of course. The umpire is not required to signal “dead ball” after every single ball. Calling “over” simply means that the over is over. The stumping could just as easily have happened after any ball of the over. Barstow had clearly grounded his bat. The bowler’s end umpire was not watching and was taking a fielder’s hat out of his pocket. The square leg umpire was not watching and was walking towards the new bowling end. Although “over” had not been called, it was plainly obvious that both umpires were not watching and considered the ball dead. The not calling of “over” is simply a huge red herring. In future, to avoid confusion, the umpire MUST pronounce and signal when he considers EVERY ball dead.
8. The age old cry of “rules are rules” goes up. This is the easiest one to refute. I refer my cricket correspondent to the tribunal case “Padglade Ltd”. In his summing up, the chairman said that “the officer should have looked into the mind of the taxpayer”. Very true. The taxpayer was bang to rights according to the letter of the law, but he wasn’t intending the outcome as it happened, so he was let off. I believe that this ruling is not specific just to Padglade, but is a fundamental principle of English law. As in Padglade, the umpires should have looked into the mind of Barstow and asked themselves a question: “is he is trying to steal a run?” If the answer is NO, then it cannot ever be justified to give him out.
In my opinion, what was done today was worse than a Mankad dismissal. At least in a Mankad the batsman is acting unfairly by backing up too far and gaining an unfair advantage. With the Barstow dismissal he wasn’t acting unfairly at all, he gained no unfair advantage from doing what he did, and wasn’t trying to steal a run.
The Australians already have two proven cheats in their side from the sandpaper scandal. Many people think they got away extremely lightly with one year bans. Letting them back in so quickly certainly gave the impression that cheating isn’t taken seriously. This incident isn’t “cheating”, but is shocking gamesmanship. Every Australian should be thoroughly ashamed of their team tonight.
————————
My cricket correspondent may remind me of Stuart Broad and not “walking” when apparently cleanly caught.
My memory fades over time, but my opinion was this: “if he nicked it and knew it, he SHOULD have walked. I don’t remember condoning what he did. I would just add that no Australian in the history of cricket would have “walked” in similar circumstances.
—————————-
He may also remind me of Michael Atherton and the “dirt in the pocket”. My memory of this was that what Atherton did was fairly standard practice at the time and that he didn’t think for one minute that he was doing anything wrong. He was making absolutely no effort to hide what he was doing. Of course, he shouldn’t have been doing it, but neither should all the other thousands of cricketers from time immemorial.
—————————
Then there is the incident of Alec Stewart stumping Brian Lara in an ODI back in the 1990s. I have no memory of this at all, but it is essentially the same incident as yesterday. He held the ball over the stumps and waited until Lara’s foot had moved out of the crease. Again, within the laws, but totally against the spirit of the game. I don’t remember the incident, but I can’t imagine for my life that I would have ever supported it.

Video Games Portrayed in the Media
Earlier today, I had to write an argumentative paragraph about the perception of video games according to people that are less of an expert on the subject. When I turned it in for AP Lang, I found that I was proud enough to turn it into a Tumblr post. But of course, I revised it to be more grammatically correct and to give myself more creative freedom (rephrasing things to fit my personal writing style.)
Many people downplay video games as a childish activity. However, this only exemplifies their ignorance and exposes the fact that they have little experience in gaming. These people often imply that gaming is unproductive, a slothful activity for sluggards. They assert that gaming is addictive and unhealthy. These critics dismiss the positive aspects of gaming: the community it builds, the strategies needed to win, and the enjoyment you get from it. I acknowledge that for some people, gaming can be addictive. However, for most people, gaming adds a positive and fun element to their lives.
Without a second thought, I totally agree with this. These critics can be ignorant when it comes to playing video games, though I got a good idea as to why this happens. The answer is quite simple: like with all sorts of things we find cool in life, there are significant generational gaps. Most people who game tend to be younger, especially in the modern gaming market. (Retro gamers can have pretty old guys because they immersed themselves in consoles of that time when they were younger and want to continue enjoying that experience.) Because of how we view the gaming demographic, hearing someone in their 60s playing games like League of Legends is a shock to us! That is because most people who play LoL tend to be around their 20s.
Though, we must recognize some of the things the less knowledgeable say in the media about video games. No matter if the people are experts in a subject or not, people will still tend to believe what they see in the news. One infamous topic to add that tends to be brought up is the sentiment that “video games are a cause of violence.” Despite the numerous claims these people have made, experts have repeatedly failed to confirm that such a trend exists, implying that it more than likely doesn’t exist. If there was a possible source for where all of this has sprung from, this would have to come from games with violent themes in them, like fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, which exemplifies the gory side of fighting. Games like this were often blasted by the media because of such themes.
Lest we forget the idea that the activity is childish either because, in the Mortal Kombat situation, the prominent presence of blood should be a good indicator that the game is not meant for a younger audience. Some games are just meant for adults, not just because of violence but because of many other things. The ESRB tends to list these things on the covers of console games and as a note on Steam games. The addiction part, though? That is true, but of course, this is not exclusive to the gaming world. Any activity can become an addiction if they get enough into it, such as gambling. For most people who game, though, addiction is not really too much of an issue, but it is good to check gaming habits if one does end up being concerned about them. Games sometimes have notes on the boxes to take breaks every so often as to avoid eye strain.
Despite everything the media says about video games, it is also agreeable that video games attract communities full of like-minded people to freely express what they enjoy about that game and even topics similar to what that game is about, even other games entirely! I think there will come a time when we, Generation Z, along with millennials and Gen X, come into power in our home countries with more of an idea of what video games are. Though, there is an as-likely chance that this will not happen, and we will continue to have tech-illiteracy on the throne; who knows?

Father of Mine – 1/2
Character: Bruce Wayne x Daughter!Reader
Summary: With the tragic passing of her mother, Y/N learns to the truth of who her father is.
Word Count: 4,000+
Warnings: Family death, cancer, absent father, cremation
A/N: The reader is described as tall in this fic. Bruce Wayne is 6′2 and I’m tall, so I’m indulging myself with no apologies. Read it or don’t.
Tumblr media
“Do you want to say anything before we…” the operator asked her.
“No,” Y/N answered quickly.
“Oh, my assistant forgot to give you this,” the operator gave her a shy smile as he handed her a small cardboard box.
She opened it to find all of her mother’s jewelry that had been on her body at the funeral.
“Thank you,” Y/N told him.
“Ready?” The operator asked.
He had been so kind throughout the whole process. It was obvious he was used to people breaking down and being extremely emotional.
But Y/N had been stoic, almost concerningly so.
Though he wasn’t one to judge. Everyone grieved differently.
With the pull of a handle, Y/N watched her mother’s body going into the chamber.
“It will be a few hours,” the operator told her.
He meant it will it will take a few hours for her mother’s body to burn to ash. Then they would hand her a tacky vase with her remains.
Y/N just nodded. “I’ll go for a walk.”
As soon as she was outside, Y/N called her mother’s executor.
“Ms. Y/L/N, I was just about to call you.”
“I’m at the crematory,” she told him. “I figured we should discuss the bills that still need to be paid for.”
“Yes, of course. As I mentioned to you before, your mother’s life insurance covers quite a lot of it…” his words died out.
“But it’s still not enough,” Y/N finished for him. “I’ll get the money.”
She wasn’t exactly rich, but she also wasn’t living paycheck to paycheck. But people never realized how much money it cost for loved ones to die. It was honestly ridiculous.
“You might want to consider taking out a loan,” he tried to suggest gently.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Another thing, Ms. Y/L/N. There was an envelope with a name on it. And your mother left instructions on delivering the envelope to them.”
She stopped her pacing.
“What name is on the envelope?” Y/N asked.
There was a pause.
“Bruce Wayne.”
Y/N’s brow furrowed.
Of course she knew who Bruce Wayne was – everyone in Gotham did, as well as most of the country. He was a billionaire playboy, only making headlines when he was a mess. But every once in awhile his philanthropy would sneak in there. Y/N always assumed those were only to help recover his image and not because he was a good person.
“You still there?” The executor asked.
“Yeah. I’m just a bit confused. But please pass it along to him, if that’s what my mom wanted.”
“I can’t. The instructions specifically say for you to deliver the envelop to him in person.”
“In person?” Y/N groaned in annoyance as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
Why did all of this have to be so god damn complicated?
“Yes. Her instructions are…oddly specific."
“Fine,” she huffed. “I’ll pick up everything from your office before the work day ends.”
——————
Y/N stared at the envelop that she’d tossed on her coffee table as she sipped a rather large glass of red wine.
She was wracking her brain trying to think of a time when her mom mentioned knowing Bruce Wayne. But Y/N would’ve remembered her mom saying his name – even in passing. It’s not a name that one can drop casually.
Y/N pulled up her phone and googled him. But she looked at his history. Yes, he was from Gotham, as was her mom, but so were 10 million other people.
But then Y/N’s scrolling paused when she realized they went to the same high school: Gotham Academy. Not only that, they graduated in the same year.
‘Were they friends?’ Y/N wondered.
But just classmates or friends still didn’t seem to warrant a handwritten letter to be delivered after one’s death.
Y/N didn’t open the envelope.
Her mother’s instructions specifically told her not to. And if she put in that much of an effort to get this done after her death, Y/N wasn’t going to ignore such a request.
That didn’t mean she wasn’t curious.
“Fuck,” Y/N sighed before throwing back the rest of her wine.
——————
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I can’t grant you access to the building without your name being in the system by the company you’re visiting,” the building receptionist told her for the third time.
“I understand. But I called his office 30 fucking times and they refuse to put me through to him or get me an appointment,” Y/N practically growled.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I already called their office to say you were here and they didn’t recognize your name. I can’t let you through to the elevators.”
Y/N’s gaze flickered to the security guard who stood a few feet away. He was eyeing her now that there was clearly an argument going on.
Y/N wanted to roll her eyes. She had a good foot on him – even without her heels on. And he looked like he couldn’t run a 50 yard dash without passing out or vomiting. If he thought he was going to physically stop her, he had another thing coming.
“Listen, I am not some crazy fucking stalker. My mom knew Bruce Wayne and in her will she asked me to deliver this to him,” Y/N’s voice lowered and became disturbingly calm. “I don’t want to be here just as much as you don’t want to have this conversation.”
“Ma’am, I’m going to need you to calm down,” the security guard finally stepped forward.
“Oh, fuck off,” Y/N rolled her eyes at the rent-a-cop.
“Ma’am, I’ll have to ask you to leave,” he continued.
“Call me ma’am one more fucking time…” Y/N growled.
But the security guard was taking a step to her.
“Excuse me. What seems to be the problem here?” A voice suddenly interrupted.
Everyone turned to see a young man – younger than Y/N – glaring at the security guard just as he was about to grab Y/N.
“M-Mr. Drake, we were just escorting this young woman from the premises,” the guard stuttered out.
Everyone at the building knew every member of the Wayne family. But unlike his siblings, Tim Drake was at the office almost every day. As one should be when they’re the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company.
“For what reason?” Tim Drake asked.
“She insists on seeing Mr. Wayne. But she doesn’t have an appointment. For security reasons, I cannot let her through, obviously, unless the company she is visiting has put her into their system and the building’s system,” the receptionist explained nervously.
Y/N frowned as if she was bored of the whole thing.
Tim stepped forward. “May I ask what your business with Bruce Wayne is?”
Now that he was closer, Y/N noticed how exhausted he looked. He was handsome still, of course. But she wondered when he last got a good night’s sleep. He was shorter than her, probably standing at 5’5. And she still believed he was younger than her, which was wild seeing as he was already the CEO and couldn’t be older than 24.
Y/N sighed before she grabbed the envelope from her black leather satchel, and showed that Bruce Wayne’s name was handwritten on it.
“My mother wished me to personally deliver this to him.”
Tim tilted his head slightly. “Why isn’t she doing it?”
“Because she’s dead,” she shot back without emotion.
But Tim’s face became sympathetic. “I’m sorry. I should’ve assumed…”
“It’s fine,” Y/N quickly cut him off before he could continue.
She was so tired of being on the receiving end of people’s sympathy. It didn’t help. And the words stopped holding any meaning to her.
“But I’m sorry. Bruce isn’t in today. And he probably won’t be coming to the office for the rest of the week.”
“Oh,” was all she responded with.
Of course Bruce Wayne didn’t come to work. Why would he?
This was a stupid idea. And now she had made a scene because of it.
“But if you give me your information, I will personally let him know that you are trying to reach him.”
“Really?” Y/N asked in shock.
Tim smiled at her surprise. “Of course.”
“Here’s my card,” she quickly grabbed one from her wallet and then a pen. “All my info is on that.” She wrote something on the back. “And that’s my mom’s name.”
He took it from her and nodded. “What was your mother’s relationship with Bruce?”
Y/N shrugged. “Honestly, I have no idea. I’ve been trying to figure it out. Apparently they graduated in the same high school class. But that’s all I was able to find.”
He nodded.
“Thank you…Mr. Drake. For your help. Really,” she urged.
“Please, it’s just Tim.” Then he glared at the receptionist and security guard. “For you it is, at least.”
“Thank you again,” Y/N felt like saying it 30 more times still wouldn’t be enough.
“You don’t have to thank me. Someone will be in touch. Have a good day, Ms. Y/L/N.”
“Y/N,” she corrected with a smile before she nodded and started backing away.
He smiled at her correction and gave a final nod.
——————
Y/N didn’t expect to hear from anyone for at least a week.
If the Wayne family was one thing, it was busy.
They probably had parties to go to, meetings to attend, private jets taking them around the world whenever they wished.
Why would they ever prioritize a meeting with her, a stranger?
So imagine her surprise when she received a call from an unrecognized number the same day she gave Tim Drake her card.
“Hello?” She answered.
Usually she would let any unknown number go to voicemail.
“Hello,” a British voice answered. “Am I speaking with Ms. Y/F/N Y/L/N?”
“This is she,” Y/N sat up straighter on her couch.
“This is Alfred Pennyworth. I work for Master Wayne and manage all his personal appointments. I was told by Master Tim that you wished to meet with him?”
“Uhhh. Yes. Yes, I do. Is that…is that possible?”
“Would you be able to stop by Wayne Manor on Friday afternoon?”
Y/N already knew she had nothing going on that would stop her from getting this done. But she still paused to pretend to think about it.
“Yes, Friday afternoon should be fine. Are you sure he doesn’t just want me to stop by Wayne Enterprises?”
It felt oddly intimate to stop by Wayne Manor. Wouldn’t they want to meet her in a more secure location like a corporate building with security that already hated her?
“He is quite certain. Should I send a car for you Ms. Y/L/N?”
A car?
Y/N felt even more out of her depth now.
“Oh, no. That won’t be necessary. I’ll be there.”
“I look forward to meeting you, Ms. Y/L/N.”
“Thanks,” she answered before hanging up and realizing that probably wasn’t the proper response to such a polite goodbye.
——————
“I haven’t heard that name since high school,” Bruce had muttered as he stared at the business card for what felt like the thousandth time.
“Yes, and the end of your relationship did not end on the best of terms,” Alfred commented.
Y/M’s/N Y/L/N had been Bruce’s high school sweetheart.
An she had seen the last moments of Bruce’s normal life.
Upon graduation, Bruce decided to leave Gotham and that’s how his second life was founded. The two of them broke up before the summer after graduation had even ended.
Well, “Breakup” was a strong word.
Bruce stopped answering her calls.
She was his first love and he continued to love her.
But once Bruce realized where his life was going and who he wanted to be, he knew he couldn’t drag her into it. She deserved better.
And Bruce was a coward about relationships then. Maybe he still was.
“I am certain you did a thorough background check on her already,” Alfred commented with a smirk.
Bruce took in a breath before listing off all of her accomplishments. “Y/F/N Y/L/N. Graduated number one in her class at Gotham Academy. She was the star of the track team, breaking the regional record for fastest time in 100m, 200m, and 400m races. Also captain of her soccer team. Attended NYU’s photography program before dropping out after a year. Now she’s a professional photography. Her work’s been featured in Vogue, New York Times, National Geographic…amongst others.”
“Rather an impressive woman,” Alfred said.
Bruce nodded.
“I should get the tea and coffee ready for her arrival.” And with that, Alfred left Bruce in the drawing room.
30 minutes later, the doorbell rang.
Bruce glanced down at his watch: she was right on time.
He heard Alfred saying his pleasantries before he heard the clicking of her heels as she rounded the corner to enter the room he was waiting in.
For being a famous photographer, she could’ve been a runway model with her height and the way she walked into the room, completely owning it. She wore four-inch heels, only adding to her natural tallness. And her bright, red coat only added to her presence.
For a split second, Bruce was convinced that he was looking at an Amazon. Diana immediately flashed into his mind for a split second. Perhaps that was what Y/M’s/N needed help with: to get her daughter to her real people. But how would she have known Bruce Wayne had such connections? Unless she knew Batman’s true identity…
As soon as Y/N spotted him in the room, he rose from his seat.
“Ms. Y/L/N,” Bruce greeted.
He took a step forward and held out his hand.
“You guys really love the formalities.” She said it with a dark evenness, but it was clearly a joke. “Y/N is fine, Mr. Wayne,” she added as she shook his hand.
“In that case, it’s Bruce,” he countered with a soft smirk.
There was something so familiar about her. But Bruce knew they’d never met.
“Thank you for seeing me. I don’t want to waste anymore of your time,” Y/N quickly got to it. She opened her purse to grab the envelope.
“My mom wanted you to have this. And she wanted to make sure I was the one to give it to you,” Y/N explained as she offered it to him.
Bruce took it carefully, but didn’t open it. “Yes, I heard about her passing. I’m very sorry for your loss.”
“Thank you,” she said hurriedly, making it obvious to Bruce that she did not want nor need his condolences.
Bruce nodded slowly.
There was a pause.
“Do you know what it says?” He asked her lightly.
She shook her head. “I wasn’t supposed to read it.”
“I see.”
“I should really be going. I have a flight to catch later tonight.” Most people that visited Wayne Manor wished to stay there forever. Or their curiosity got the best of them and their eyes took in every little detail.
But Y/N looked like she’d rather be anywhere else. And she wanted to get out as soon as she possibly could.
“Thank you again for seeing me,” she rushed out.
Without waiting for his answer, Y/N turned and started walking out of the room.
But she only got a few steps before she stopped.
Bruce watched her shoulders tense and her body move as she was clearly taking in deep breath.
Slowly, Y/N turned around to face him.
“Were you friends?”
Bruce gave her a watery smile. “She was my girlfriend in high school.”
Y/N seemed annoyed by that answer. “She never mentioned you. Not once.”
Bruce’s brow furrowed at that and his eyes zoned out as if he was revising the past in his mind. “I’m not entirely surprised. Things didn’t really end well between us.”
She nodded slowly. “Goodbye, Mr. Wayne.”
And Y/N turned and strutted out of the room without looking back.
As soon as Bruce heard her cab drive away, he ripped open the envelope and pulled out a letter.
He barely noticed that Dick had walked into the room. “May I ask…Who was the extremely attractive and tall woman that just walked out?”
But Bruce didn’t hear him as his eyes raced across the letter. His heart sped as he continued reading.
“Bruce?” Dick asked after being ignored. “Is she your next conquest or what?”
It wasn’t until Bruce was done reading the letter for the third time that he finally looked up and acknowledged Dick.
Alfred had also walked into the room, unbeknownst to Bruce.
“You OK?” Dick asked, now concerned with how silent Bruce had become.
“Master Wayne?” Alfred also urged.
“That was…my daughter,” Bruce finally muttered.
Dick blinked before his eyes grew wide in shock.
Alfred seemed less surprised, almost as if he had already put that together.
“Excuse me,” Bruce told them and exited the room.
———
Dick and Alfred must’ve warned the rest of the family not to bother Bruce in the cave. Usually he would’ve been disturbed by now.
Bruce had been at the computer for hours.
Alfred was the first person to come down, carrying a tray with dinner and tea.
The butler wasn’t surprised to find Y/N’s face all over the screens.
If Bruce had left any available information hidden before inviting Y/N to the manor, it was all out there now. Bruce knew everything about Y/F/N Y/L/N that was public knowledge – probably even some things that were not.
“You know, you did not seem all that surprised,” Bruce said to Alfred as he put the tray of food down next to him.
“Seemed rather obvious, didn’t it?”
Bruce quickly turned to look at him. “It did?”
Alfred smirked. “Her eyes,” was all he said.
“The color?”
Alfred shook his head. “As soon as she walked into the manor, they were reading me.” He tilted his head in Bruce’s direction. “Observation. Perception. Attention to detail...That is all you, Master Wayne.”
“The way she held herself,” Alfred continued, "Shoulders held back, head high, walking with purpose. No hesitation.”
“Also me?” Bruce asked.
Alfred simply nodded.
“I don’t think she liked me very much,” Bruce sighed.
He didn’t know how he felt about that yet.
“A lot of people think you don’t like them when you first meet them,” Alfred countered. “Because I don’t trust them yet.”
Alfred raised his brows and silently ask him, ‘Don’t you see my point?’
Bruce rubbed his face and reached for the tea on the tray, ignoring all the food.
“I don’t know why you’re so entertained by this, Alfred.”
“Yes, I was entertained. I just saw a younger, female version of you, Master Wayne.”
“I abandoned her,” Bruce shot.
“You didn’t know she existed,” Alfred corrected.
“And why do you think that is?”
Alfred’s face dropped a little bit when he noticed the envelope discarded on the far end of Bruce’s desktop.
He looked down at the ground as he asked, “Might I ask what the letter said?”
Bruce glared at the letter as if touching it would burn him.
But after a moment, he grabbed it and quickly handed it to Alfred.
Bruce,
If this letter has finally reached you, it is because I have passed.
I must admit that I wrote this letter mostly in the event that I leave my daughter before she is an adult. But once Y/N turned 18, I decided to still pass this along to you.
There is no easy way to tell you this, so I will get to the point.
The young woman who delivered this letter to you is your daughter, Bruce.
Y/F/N Y/M/N Y/L/N.
When I found out I was pregnant with her, I was only 18. We had just graduated high school. You had started traveling. You called less and less. And you grew more distant – physically and emotionally. Eventually, you stopped answering my calls altogether. I left you a voicemail, only saying that I so desperately needed to talk to you, that I needed you.
But you never called me back.
With no words at all, you made it very clear that you no longer wanted anything to do with me.
But there I was, a teenager who was pregnant with our child.
I would be lying if I said I never considered terminating my pregnancy. I was scared and you broke my heart. All I wanted to do was erase you from my life.
But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Once I decided what my future was going to be, I also decided that I did not want you to have any part in it.
I knew even if you pretended to play the doting father and the committed partner, you would grow tired of us eventually. You would resent me and our child for bringing you down. And you would brush us aside for yourself.
I realized I would rather Y/N have no father at all than one who would only disappoint her over and over again.
To this day, I truly believe I did the right thing for all three of us.
There are not enough words to explain the complicated woman that Y/N grew up to be. But I will try my best. I think I owe you that at least.
Or maybe you have no interest.
I don’t know how she became so much like you, even when I never so much as showed her a picture of you or uttered your name.
She enjoys being alone – almost to her own detriment. I constantly catch her repressing her feelings, always staying strong for everyone else. It reminds me of you. She’s assertive and confident, never letting anything stand in the way of what she wants. Sometimes I don’t think she’s scared of anything. It worries me, just like it worried me when I thought the same of you.
I truly don’t know what you will do with this information.
But…if you have any desire to form some sort of relationship with her, then you should know this: she will not make it easy for you. She will push you away. And she might even hate you. I raised her to never need a man in her life, and she’ll make sure you know that.
I don’t expect anything from you. I never did.
But I would just like to know there might be someone who will be there for her should she need them.
Goodbye, Bruce.
Alfred slowly handed the letter back to Bruce when he was finished.
“I pushed her away because I knew what I was about to become,” Bruce explained darkly. “And I didn’t want her anywhere near it. She would’ve been in danger.”
“Y/N, as well,” Alfred added.
“But had I known…if I just listened to her–”
“Master Wayne, I thought we had agreed to never linger on the ‘what ifs.’”
That sure silenced Bruce.
“Now, what do you plan on doing, Master Wayne?”
———
Y/N frowned when her phone started vibrating and she recognized the name of her mom’s executor on her phone screen.
“Hello?”
“Ms. Y/L/N, how are you?”
“Fine. How are you?” She was quick, wanting to get this over with. Surely, he had bad news. Another medical bill came in or some other expense that slipped by them.
“Good, good. Just curious…have you placed any payments to our various claims?”
“Uhhh…no. But I’m working on it.”
Y/N hadn’t expected to get a call nagging about paying bills.
“No, no, no. You misunderstand. They’ve all been paid,” the executor explained.
Y/N sat up straighter in her chair. “What? That’s not possible.”
“An anonymous donor. They somehow got record of all your outstanding payments and covered all of them.”
Y/N was stunned to silence.
“Ms. Y/L/N…this is a good thing.”
She blinked and shook her head. “Right. Yes, of course. I just…thank you.”
“Don’t thank me. Thank this guardian angel of yours.”
