Too late - Evan Buckley

Pairing: Evan Buckley x gn!reader

Summary just a short blurb in which the reader decides to finally tell Buck how they feel about him

Word count: 422 damn my bad

Warnings: none I think

For the past few days, you had been gathering up courage to finally confront Buck and tell him how you feel. Hen and Chimney were absolutely rooting for you and even Maddie was convinced that Buck felt the same way about you.

You and Buck had become close friends ever since you joined the 118. For you, those feelings quickly grew to something more than just friendship. You kept your feelings hidden for years, but a conversation that took place a couple of weeks ago made you change your mind.

“I think it’s time for Buck 3.0.” He said, leaning against the fire truck.

Chimney snorted. “Here we go.”

“No, I’m serious, you know. I know I said that Buck 2.0 would be different, but this time I’m actually going to change.”

You raised your eyebrows at him. “Really?”

“Don’t be so skeptical, y/n. You just wait and see.” He said with a smirk on his face.

Hen gave him a pat on the shoulder and walked away with a smile on her face.

“Whatever you say, Buckaroo.” Chim said.

Buck pouted. “Why does no one here actually have faith in me?” He said, putting a hand over his heart, feigning being hurt.

You laughed and shook your head. “Because we all know you, Buck.”

Buck gasped. “Ouch, that hurt.”

You, however, were head over heels in love with the guy. So, you believed him when he said he would change, and you decided that telling him how you feel could maybe work out.

So here you were, on his couch, Chinese take away food on the coffee table and feet in his lap. This wasn’t unusual for you and Buck; you both had found some sort of comfort in watching movies together.

Buck noticed you weren’t paying attention to the movie anymore, so he turned to look at you. “You good?” He said, before looking back at the television.

You cleared your throat and sat up a little straighter. “Yeah, there’s just something I want to tell you. It’s been on my mind for a while.”

“Shoot.” He said, not realizing how anxious you were.

You took a deep breath and relaxed your shoulders. You only live once, right?

“I-…” you started to say, but his phone ringing interrupted you.

Buck sighed and held up a finger to pause you.

He smiled at the caller ID and picked up his phone. His next sentence shattered your heart and you felt like the dumbest person on the planet; you should’ve known.

“Hey baby, what’s up?”

oh please no, don't mind me, just thinking about the implications of them ending this season with eddie asking buck about the go karting place in the desert (that they mentioned in the first episode)

they'll both be out of their respective relationships, buck will have figured his feelings out for eddie and eddie will have just started to really uncover what he feels for buck, and finally digging thru all of his overwhelming amount of catholic guilt and what that means for him.

they could be in the locker room, about to leave after their shift (to further the parallel) and eddie could wait til everyone else leaves, so it's just the two of them left alone before he asks buck what his plans are for the day. buck would have a lackluster response, having nothing planned, and eddie would say something like;

"well uh hey, if you had nothing goin' on, this uh, person, told me about this go karting place out in the desert, could be fun" he would probably be smirking a little, his smile wavering a bit to showcase his nerves (though not understanding fully why he is nervous because? he's just asking his friend to hang out.. isn't he?)

but buck would obviously notice, laughing a little to try and ease the tension and calm his nerves a bit, "yeah, yeah i think i heard of it. uh- no yeah i don't have anything goin' on, i'm sure chris would love that" smile easily sliding onto his face, thinking about spending the day with the diaz boys.

eddie would sorta backtrack a little, not expecting that response, and adds on, "oh i uh- i was actually thinking that uh, maybe it could just be, y'know, us? i mean, if you're cool with that of course! i can ask chris but i think he might have plans with one of his friends and-"

buck cuts him off before eddie can ramble himself into oblivion, "-eddie. don't worry about it, i- i would love to go with you" his cheeks a little rosy, clearly not anticipating this turn of events and what it could possibly mean.

and then to really send it home

"great, it's a date."

just to really show that hey, this is the direction they are going in btw! yes it is romantic! yes it is intended to be that way!

and ofc s8 would be them sort of Knowing but not doing anything because eddie needs the time to work on himself, figure himself out and everything but by s8 finale they get together <3

What do you think Buck and Eddie's love language is?

So here's the thing both Buck and Eddie had such fucked up childhoods and hectic lives that they definitely need on all 5, but they switch depending on their moods. I think Eddie's most common and most needed are physical touch & words of affirmation. He just needs to be reminded that you're here for him and that you love him. Whether it's a quick "I love you baby" or simply resting a hand on his back while curled up together. Buck's is quality time, words of affirmation, and acts of service. It's obvious Buck is needier than Eddie, so I think he has one more than Eddie. As a kid, Buck always felt like a waste of space, so you acknowledging his presence with light touches or loving words here and there that would make him fall madly in love with you. Rubbing his shoulder and giving Buck compliments while you do it might just get you knocked up. Also, Buck always felt useless as a kid and always tried/tries to fix everything every chance he gets so having a partner that does that might be a change of pace for Buck that he loves. Checking in on him during a stressful day at work or making him a cup of coffee in the morning would make Buck feel that domestic bliss he's always craved in a relationship.

hello! for the holiday extravaganza, Christmas morning with buck including lots of cuddles, breakfast in bed and presents but they make it quick cause they have a party at Athena’s after.

“Merry Christmas,” he whispers to you, arms wrapped around you. Smiling, you lean back into your boyfriend. “Merry Christmas Buck.”

The two of you lay in bed for a bit longer, contemplating if you should get out. “Do we have to?” Buck groans, grabbing your arm as you get out of the bed. The man pulls you back down, letting you sit before he shifts to drop his head on your lap.

Your hand passes through his hair. “We do; we have gifts to open plus I need to wrap the stuff for the team before we head to Athena and Bobby’s, remember ?”

“We can skip that,” he smiles up at you and you smile, leaning down to kiss your boyfriend’s nose. “We can’t; now get up Buckley.” You get up, letting his head drop down onto the bed.

Buck pouts as he sits up, the two of you eventually making it to the bathroom to get ready for the day. At some point, Buck finds his way to the kitchen to put the cooking skills he's acquired to good use.

You sat at the counter, wrapping the gifts for Denny and Chris when Buck set a cup of coffee in front of you, hugging you from behind. “Those are cool,” he says, reaching for the sweaters you had on the counter.

There’s two; one with space ships and planets while the other one had science equipment and little germ cartoons with faces.

“I know, I saw them and I had to get them. The space one is for Chris and the science one for Denny.”

“It’s perfect,” Buck smiles, kissing your cheek. “So are you.” He add and you smile, a hand resting on your boyfriend’s cheek.

“Buck, baby?”

“Hm?”

“Your French toast is burning.” You say and the man looks up at the stove, “shit!” He lets go of you and runs over to the stove. You bit back a smile when he takes the pan off the stove.

“Uh,” he looks around, “how about an omelette?”

“Sounds perfect.”

Thought I would share a bit from that hook-up fic that was meant to be 3k words but has passed 9k and quickly coming up to 10k, with more ideas for it in my head 🫠 I keep the general introduction of Eddie to the 118 the same, but twisting it as I see fit.

Chimney let out a low whistle. “No, look at him. That is one beautiful man.”

Hen peaked over Buck’s shoulder. “Where’s the lie? And I like girls.”

Buck twisted, looking back through the glass walls of the locker room and froze. “Shit.” Buck breathed out.

“What?” Hen asked, cutting a look at him.

Buck’s eyes bounced from Hen to Bobby, before turning back around. “W-who’s that?” He stuttered, watch as the man pulled an LAFD shirt over his head, muscles flexing and move with the motion, lightly tanned skinned disappearing under the fabric. Buck curled his hands into fists, the memory of just how soft and warm that skin was branded on his palms.

“Eddie Diaz, new recruit. Just graduation top of his class this week, everyone was after him, but I talked him into joining the 118.” Bobby told them. “He’s a former Army medic, served multiple tours in Afghanistan. Even has a Silver Star.” He said proudly.

“Wow, Silver Star.” Hen smirked at Buck as she moved toward the locker room.

“He’ll be a great addition, obviously knows how to work under pressure. Come on I’ll introduce you.” Bobby said, a step behind Hen.

Chimney snorted a laugh. “Looks you you’ve got some real competition now, huh Buckaroo?”

Buck turned, trailing behind his teammates, keeping his head low as Bobby made the introductions to Eddie.

“And this is Buck.” Bobby turned, reaching out and grabbing Buck by the shoulder, pulling him forward.

Eddie’s eyes went wide when they landed on Buck’s, darting around as if looking for a way to escape. His face seemed to flush slightly, and Buck caught the bob of his throat. Okay, so he wasn’t the only one panicking, this was good. This made it easier.

Buck’s shock off the awkward feeling, attempting a polite smile and stuck his hand out. “Nice to meet you, man. Welcome to the 118.”

Something like relief passed over Eddie’s face, the tension in his shoulders easing. He smiled back, shaking Bucks hand. “Thanks.”

"So, did you finally..." Eddie trails off, raising his eyebrows with every second of silence that passes between them. Buck just blinks at him, the barest hints of a smirk tugging at his lips.

"Did I what, Eddie?" He asks, all wide eyes and fluttering lashes. Eddie can't decide whether he wants to punch him or offer a belated helping hand.

"Did you, you know," he sighs, rolls his eyes, "donate?"

"I did." Buck nods. His responding grin is just ever so slightly off-centre, plasticky and brittle, but convincing enough that Eddie wonders if he's projecting.

"Okay." Eddie breathes because he's not quite sure what else to say.

He knows what he wants to say. A million different things ranging from what the fuck is going on in your head to are you sure this is a good idea to how long is it going to take you to realise that you're more than just spare parts to please take it back. A million different things in between the why did Hen know before me and the why does this feel like last year all over again and the why does this hurt more than a bullet to the shoulder.

So, its not that he doesn't have anything to say, its just that he's not sure what he should say. Because there's a fine line he always walks with Buck: sometimes he pushes and Buck begrudgingly listens, sometimes he pushes and Buck pushes right the fuck back.

And ever since Buck flew after Chimney on a fucking bike of all things, Eddie's had the distinct impression that Buck has been trying to run away from him. If Buck wasn't, well, Buck, Eddie would be waiting for a formal letter of resignation and a new partner.

"So, your vow of celibacy is over?" Eddie asks when Buck has been staring at him for too long. His skin is itchy under his Henley and he tries not to think about the day last week that Buck walked into the gym, saw Eddie there and then immediately changed back into his uniform. He can't think about it now he has this new information or he'll go insane and quite possibly throw himself off a bridge—or into Buck's bed.

"Yeah." Buck breathes a sigh of relief, but there's something fragile about the humour they're both trying to maintain. Eddie resolutely does not think about Buck in a sterile room with a hand on his— "Thank, God. I'd never make it as a priest." Eddie is suddenly assaulted by an image of Buck in all black and a dog collar—and theeeere's the Catholic guilt.

Fuck, he never should have let May talk him into watching Fleabag.

"The woman handed me two porn mags." Buck huffs down at his beer. "A female and a male one." Eddie does not choke on his next sip, thank you very much. "It was weird, but, I guess, maybe they just don't try to assume?"

"Mhm." Eddie clears his throat of the high-pitched lump forming there. "Did you even need the magazines after five weeks?"

"Barely." Buck snorts a startled laugh, blue eyes shining with something that looks like delighted shock as he stares up at Eddie.

"Have you," another cough. Fucking lump in his throat. "Have you heard from Connor and Kameron?" Eddie's really hoping that his voice didn't come out as venomous as he wanted it to.

Because he has nothing against Connor and Kameron. Absolutely nothing at all. Come on, Eddie can't kid himself, if he had the opportunity to get a little blue-eyed Buck running around, he'd jump at the opportunity too. And, like, he's seen what Buck does to a kid seven years late and just nurture, no nature, so he knows that it'd take anything short of an apocalyptically bad childhood to turn Buck and Kameron's—Buck and Kameron's—child into anything other than human sunshine.

So, really, he has nothing against Connor and Kameron. He's kind of in awe of them, if anything, because they actually had the guts to do what Eddie couldn't. And he should be thanking Connor because he was the one to bring Buck to LA, to bring Buck to the 118, to bring Buck to him and Chris. Its just...

Eddie's never been good with listening to Buck's self-deprecation, or seeing any sign of the people who have made Buck feel like less than he is, or facing up to the reality of Buck thinking he's expendable, defective parts, a sacrificial lamb. He's never been good at it. And now Buck's giving another piece of himself away for nothing, to someone who he's barely spoken to over the past few years, for absolutely nothing in return. Sure, that generosity is one of the things Eddie loves about Buck—sue him!—but sometimes its dangerous. And Connor and Kameron are taking advantage of it.

Okay, maybe he has the teeniest tiniest bit of dislike for them. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with the way Buck had blushed when Eddie had asked just a friend? about Connor. Absolutely nothing at all, no siree! Good for Connor! He just doesn't like that Connor showed up, ordered a beer and asked Buck for his sperm. Or the fact that Connor and Kameron had showed up to his work when he hadn't answered his phone like he wasn't a very busy firefighter with a crazy schedule. That's just fucking weird and kind of inconsiderate, especially considering that was how they'd all found out about Buck's... philanthropy.

(Sure, maybe they'd eavesdropped, but that wasn't on them.)

And like. Who the fuck spells Cameron with a 'K'?

But Eddie doesn't have anything against them.

Really.

"They said thanks." Buck nods, his brow furrows then smooths out in under a second. Eddie sees it, he always sees it.

"Buck." He murmurs.

"Don't." Buck swallows the last of his beer, pats his thighs, and stands. "I should get going."

"Buck, don't—"

"You've gotta pick Chris up in a couple of minutes." Buck shakes his head, as clear of a dismissal as Connor and Kameron's thanks. Eddie doesn't give up so easily.

"You could come with me?" He suggests, hating the hope in his voice. A month ago, he wouldn't have had to hope, he would have known that the answer was a yes. But he follows Buck to the door which means he sees the exact moment his best friend freezes with one hand on the hallway wall. "Chris would love an impromptu movie night—"

"I can't." Buck snaps. He doesn't turn around, but Eddie hears enough of a waver in his voice to know that there are tears building in his eyes. "Eddie, I can't."

And Buck walks out of the door before Eddie can catch the first piece of his breaking heart.

He should have pushed.

just a little blurb about taking Christopher to the zoo

a/n: this bi little firefighter has stolen my heart, I cannot stop thinking about him, I love him so so much and now I will annoy you all with it

“Did you know tigers are the only big cats with stripes? It helps to provide camouflage in dense cover.” Buck turns away from the information board to look at both Christopher and you.

“Everyone knows that,” Christopher quips, “and we can all read.” Your involuntary giggle earns you a playful glare from Buck.

“Ohhh, ouch!” Buck places both hands over his heart like he’s in physical pain. “I think you two have spent way too much time together,” he points straight at you, “your sass is rubbing off on him.” You completely ignore Buck’s comment and turn back to Christopher.

“Just be glad you don’t get ‘Buck’s fun facts’ at all times of the day like some of us,” you say it lightheartedly, looking up at your boyfriend with a smile. You actually love it when Buck voices the little tidbits of information even when it’s at midnight and you’re trying to sleep or in the middle of a stressful shift. Buck lets out a scoff playing along with the bit as he turns and begins to walk away from you both. “Just watch out he’ll start telling that story about the tiger that escaped-”

“Again!” You both speak at the same time and Christopher at least finds your joke funny, throwing his head back and laughing. Buck stops in his tracks and turns to look at you both as you radiate pure joy.

“I heard that!” Buck calls from a few feet away and it only makes Christopher laugh even more. When you look up at Buck he’s grinning, unable to even fake being annoyed with the pair of you. “Next time we go to the zoo I’m taking Jee, she likes all my stories.” Buck adds as you both start approaching him.

“That’s ’cause she can’t talk yet.” Christopher’s quick wit never fails to amuse you, he reminds you of his father more and more everyday.

“I hope you know I actually really do love Buck’s fun facts,” you hook your arm around Buck’s and look up at him as your chin rests on his shoulder. He gives you a genuine smile before contorting in a way so he can kiss you.

“Good, ‘cause I have more.” You both chuckle and Buck’s free hand comes up to hold the side of your head, his lips placing a kiss to your temple.

“Gross.” Christopher mumbles as he passes you both, making his way to the next animal on the map. Both Buck and you laugh in disbelief before following after him. Buck makes sure when you all stop to look at the rhinos to place an over exaggerated kiss on top of Christopher’s head which he definitely doesn’t appreciate.

“hey, pretty boy.” y/n says into bucks ear, finally getting out of work and meeting him and his team at the bar.

he feels her warm arms wrap over his shoulders, not once second guessing who it was. he could feel her soft hair dangle on his ears as she leaned over him. her sweet perfume flooded his nose has one of his favorites, concealing the dark cover of ash and flames that he had been around all day.

“that’s a new one.” buck smiles, turning his head to look at the adorable smile on her lips.

“you don’t like it?”

“never said that,” he mumbles against her mouth, pecking her lips with his own and feeling the soft, pink skin.

he allows his whole body to tilt, his chair spinning and he places his hand on her side. “you’re cute.”

“can you guys not?” eddie grumbles from next to buck, tempted to throw a piece of popcorn at him. buck just ignores him, letting the cheesy grin grow on his face as his nose scrunches.

“anyway,” buck chuckles a bit, looking back to the girl besides him. “i ordered you a drink!” he tells her, taking the glass from the bartender. “a red sangria for my lady.”

“you remembered.” y/n smirks.

“how could i forget anything about you?”
