“I can´t shoot all of them…”, Salomé hissed.
“How is your magic training going? Anything you can use already?”, Benicio asked. Celia shrugged:
“I broke a glass today.”

I can't remember if I asked you this before. If I did, then you could just ignore this message. But.. I'm really curious about your opinion about characters. I know everyone prefers insert characters since they have been mostly more inclusive for people who enjoy reading characters.
But what's your opinion about original characters. Like the characters who might actually have face claims as some visual representation of those characters? Since I know many people don't care about original characters like that anymore. Which is understandable in some ways.
Howdy! I’m hoping I’m understanding this question correctly! 😅😅
So as for reading: I personally don’t really read insert fics if the character is named or has major descriptors that don’t match me. Stuff like: plus sized characters or different skin tone, eye colour, etc. And it’s not because I do not enjoy that kind of content or don’t want to appreciate that authors work or the place in which that creation comes from, but it more so feels like a space that was not intended for me to be in, so I just. Don’t. (In a dramatic example: it would be like me (atheist) going into a church for mass. Like I can appreciate it and see the beauty in it. But it’s clearly not something meant for me as I will never fully understand it. And so that creates a disconnect for me)
There are exceptions every once in a while. I read a fic a long long time ago where the insert character was in a wheelchair and honestly it was such a beautiful story. I loved it.
As for writing: god do I wanna make characters simply for my peace of mind dude. Writing insert is fun and all for the inclusivity but you have to be SO. CAREFUL. with your words and your phrases and your actions and everything. Because it is a character meant to be replaced by the person reading it, commonly with themselves. So if I screw up and say something like “rose tinted cheeks” or “straight long hair” or “as he rose tall above her” these are all phrases that could potentially not relate to some folks and it’s extremely mentally exhausting as someone who only wrote charactered stories prior where I never had to worry about it. So it’s exhausting but also a fun challenge. I’ll continue to write insert fics here but maybe every once in a while I’ll throw myself a bone and be like “this character has long smooth hair” or “this character is on the thinner side” in my warnings just to have some leeway with descriptions. And that way the readers know prior to going in as well.
As for not reading insert fan fiction, I love all characters. Big, small, physically strong or weak, mentally strong or weak, all skin colours, all weights and sizes, everything. I love seeing what authors come up with and how it then ingrains into the character themself.
Like how I could never imagine Aelin from Throne of Glass as anything but blonde. Or how I always picture Jude with her signature hair horns and how they just suit her character so well, or how America from The Selection just embodies her name whole heartedly. How Clary Fray is an artist and it’s core to who she is. I love it. So so much.
I hope that’s the kind of answer you were looking for? 😅😅. There’s a very real chance I may have misunderstood but thank you for asking regardless!! This was a super fun ask!

CC is clearly biased for Herondales. She tries really hard to make the reader find Herondales attractive the truth is I never felt more dry reading about Jace, Stephen, Will and James. They do nothing for me. They all have the same personality except for James who has next to no personality aside for being constantly horny for Cordeila. I dare any person disagreeing with my statement give me 5 difference between Will, Jace and Stephen personality wise. Despite all her efforts to make us like Herondales I always found the other characters more attractive. Jem over Will. Anyone over Jace. Michael over stephen. Anna over James honestly anyone over James. Kit is a mini jace no originality. Freaking Manuel from TDA came off as more attractive than Jace and that says alot 💀.
Oh and can someone please tell me her obsession with eyes, weird ass body proportions and no one mentions the way shadowhunters walk sounds hilarious ngl like what what do you mean they walk like cats or lions or dancers. If shadowhunters's walks are like cats does that mean Jace walks are cattier cuz of all the extra angel blood. I try to picture Jace's walking and all I can imagine is Andrew tate's looney tunes fruity ass walk.
Her books are the fast food of literature as a booktuber described it as.
Period.
I said sometime before that the side characters are more interesting because they aren't (as) surrounded by Clare's bias or manipulative narration. Therefore more likable because I am not force-fed how great and amazing they are, I just get to take my time with them and get familiarized with their characters on my own. Problems also arise with Jace having problems more important than the others, that his issues are the grandest and most highlighted. Also Jace, Clary, and Simon are the only necessary characters whose stories are tied to the main plot. Even their romances (Clary with both Jace and Simon) have plot relevance. Others not so much.
As Clare's writing has always been more or less mostly telling than showing, it's not surprising that she needs to tell how amazing the Herondale's are instead of actually basing her pretense on actually showing. Instead the readers are just offered this premise in every story, every other character is written just admiring and loving them, so it must be true? Just have characters fawn over someone and you bet the readers will also. Right.
Clare seems to think that other characters telling things is showing.
Clare's attention strips any side character of all intrigue and turns them into what Clare's protagonists usually are. Then they become all looks and hair and eye colors and wear white shirts through which their marks shine through (like Jace literally in every TMI book). Some concepts which Clare presents in her series are complex and complicated, I can agree with that, but her writing is unable to capture any depth or meaning of any of them. Attributing factor to this her always ending up focusing majorly on love, especially the romantic kind of the main couple, as the motivator. I've read amazing pieces of TSC fan fiction, the kind of thoughtful and honest looks on the characters that Clare is unable to acknowledge on her part.
Her writing only presents the shallowest of emotions. Her writing on grief, loss, or love aren't really thought-provoking, just more cookie-cutter ideas on top of the previous ones. Not that all writing absolutely needs or has to be insightful, it's just that people pretend her writing is deeper than it actually is. Like people think chopped-up sentences are anything but surface-level poetry when in its essence poetry as an art and craft is more than that.
Everyone is so on money with James' lack of personality. When he got furious with Grace (rightly so BUT) I felt really weird about it. You're message really helped me figure it out though: I had no idea of his personality nor any prediction on how he may react to more controversial happenings. Well, that's not true. Everyone on the Righteous Side of things in TSC always react with fury, roasting the antagonists crisp with their verbalism. But still I had no idea. Who is this guy calling Grace a criminal and a fiend? I don't know him at all.
And what makes the Herondales great really? I don't see why James or Will are anymore heroic than Clary, Cordelia, Emma, Simon, Alec, or Isabelle. I don't think Tessa as particularly heroic but that's also my faint memory of TID and disgust of her talking, so this is not to be entirely trusted.

Filing Off the Serial Numbers: Professionally Published FIcs
While texts that we might call fanfiction in the most basic sense of the term have been published in the past (think Wide Sargasso Sea), modern fanfictions have only started to go pro in the past few decades. Fanfiction authors will pull all their fic from the internet, change the character names and other ties to the source media, and publish their works as original fiction. This is a process known in the fannish community as “filing off the serial numbers,” and it’s generated a lot of controversy as more and more fan writers take their work to the professional publishing stage. In this iteration of Fic History, we’re going to explore three of the most well known professionally published fanfictions.
The Mortal Instruments
Cassandra Clare is a household name to any fantasy or YA fiction lover, but you may not know that she also used to be a household name in the Harry Potter fandom. Then writing as Cassandra Claire (peep the i), Clare was a Big Name Fan who was revered in fandom circles for writing The Draco Trilogy, among other fics, which helped to shape how the fandom characterized Draco. She pulled all of her fics from the internet prior to the publishing of City of Bones, but the name of the series that City of Bones belongs to, The Mortal Instruments, shares a name with a Ron/Ginny (yes, incest) fic Clare penned in 2004.
Tumblr media
I want to clarify that The Mortal Instruments is not officially a published fanfiction, but fans have noticed similarities between main characters Clary and Jace and Clare’s characterizations of Ginny and Draco, and a passage from one of her Draco fics appears verbatim in City of Bones, save for a few name edits. Due to the popularity of the series and Clare’s past as a fan writer, I chose to include the series here.
Fifty Shades of Grey
Starting in 2009, an author going by the screen name Snowqueens Icedragon began publishing a Twilight BDSM AU fic titled Master of the Universe. It was deleted from the internet in 2011, and in early 2012, Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James was published to international acclaim and revilement. These two texts are the same story by the same author. While Fifty Shades generated a lot of stir in the media for being a doctored fanfiction (something many people had never heard of before), it generated a lot of stir in fandom spaces for a few reasons. One, many beta readers had worked on the story when it was a fanfiction, and those readers received none of the profit (Jamison 2013). Two, the book was now essentially mainstream media’s only perception of fanfiction, and given that it was being heavily criticized for being a poorly written inaccurate (in terms of the BDSM stuff) smut-fest, it gave fanfiction a bad name.
Tumblr media
The After Series
The most notable and recent example of filing off the serial numbers I can think of is the After series by Anna Todd, known to the internet originally as Imaginator1D. You may know the series now as a best-selling set of novels featuring college students Tessa Young and Hardin Scott that received a set of movie adaptations starting in 2019, but the original iteration of After was a college AU that starred characters Tessa Young and Harry Styles of One Direction fame. Harry’s then bandmates were featured as friends and stepbrothers of Styles, while Tessa is an original character. The After series also received/receives a lot of flak from fannish communities for not being a very high quality example of fanfiction, as well as glorifying what many viewed as an abusive relationship between the two leads.
Tumblr media
Publishing your fanfic is forever going to be a touchy subject in fannish communities. Some are completely fine with it, and some fans see it as the ultimate fan sin. As Anne Jamison wrote in Fic (see Bibliography page),
“The fan culture tenet that ‘thou shalt not profit from fanworks’ has been, depending on who you talk to, an almost sacred and inviolate, wholly necessary founding principle of fandom. To others within the same community, it’s only been a necessary evil.”
She also notes that the fact that the term fanfiction doesn’t have one solid definition, and doesn’t actually clarify how close the story is to the material it was based off of. This doesn’t even bring into question the ethical dilemma surrounding profiting off of a fic that beta readers worked on for no cost. All in all, filing off the serial numbers will always be hot button issue in fandom, and I’d love to hear what thoughts y’all might have on it!
Happy reading,
KP

Tumblr media
• I’m quite pure for my ships, I prefer non-canons because they’re not written to be together on purpose but more unexpected and natural, and that make sense to me. I have confidence and believe in their connection, so they have.
• I repect the different opinions and I don’t care too much actually. Because everyone is a different individual, and if something I really dislike or disagree with, I will block/mute it myself. So nothing to worry about. The world is tolerant, we all fair and have a right to exist, and it’s valid.
• I’m open mind for all kinds of contents/shipping, characters are free and fiction doesn’t equal to reality, there’s no such limited in it. Agree/like/ship it or not, it’s all up to ourselves, only if we like it/or not, that’s all. Don’t find stupid excuses that even yourself doesn’t understand fully to stop others from enjoying, because you personal don’t agree with. That’s rude.
• I’m happy to see people who love my works and would like to create extended content for it (like the AUs/prompts that I give) for the same characters. I really appreciate it :)
But I DO HATE the inspiration and conceptual plagiarism. Such as I post my art for A/B and after 11 hours, someone posts the work that almost uses the same color palette and ideas as my art but for B/C from the same fandom. I have to say that I feel sad for you actually, you really have no idea of how to rumor-mongering for your ship, huh?
Please respect the spirit of original and honest. Don’t be an inspiration/idea thief. (Just like the AI art)
• Fandom police & antis are not welcome here. I block/delete antis/fanpols with no seconds and explains, hope you guys know. My ship is my baby, you guys are trash and don’t deserve to be under their post. Please feel free to block/mute me too if you don’t like my post contents or you’re a antis/fanpol, thanks a lot 😉🫰

Shadow and Bone rant, because I need it
Shadow and Bone has some incredible potential, both the books and the show, but neither actually lives up to it.
Alina could have been interesting. Cartographer is a rare profession for fictional characters, but in the books/show she's just a beginner (at 17/20 it's understandable). Make her at least 25 with 9 years of experience in the army, give her a promotion with subordinates she's responsible for and you would get a more interesting character who saw some serious shit in the army, acts like a soldier, and knows responsibility. (And maybe wants to stop the war at all cost, utilizing the Fold maybe.*wink, wink*)
It bothered me that we never saw her using cartography this profession that makes her unique for reaching her goals. In the show, she has dreams about the stag. It would have been interesting to see HER figuring out the whereabouts of the stag by using the stag's surroundings like mountains, specific types of trees, topography, etc. Work smarter, not harder.
Diana Bishop suffers from the same passiveness in the first book of the All Souls trilogy, but she actively uses her science historian background and those passages are the most interesting parts of her POV. Alina's interest in drawing and geography would give her a unique personality, and made her relatable to many (see ADoW and history nerds). Many YA heroines have a specific and useful skillset: Katniss-archery, Clary Fray-drawing, etc. Sadly, her entire personality is running away with Mal.
Mal's character feels pointless to me. The story depicts an oppressed minority group with special powers, and their struggles in the world, the heroine and the antagonist are both part of the said minority group, and he's constantly shown to be a bigot against the Grisha, so what makes him so important to the plot? His tracking skills? Give the job to a no-name tracker and I wouldn't miss him.
At least the show made him more likable, but Archie and Jessie still lack romantic chemistry. However his chemistry with his friends Mikhail and Dubrov was spot on, I really liked it. They showed life as a simple otkazat'sya soldier on the front, and their death was painful to watch. I thought that his friend's death would make a bigger impact on Mal, him wanting to get revenge on the fjerdans and end the war at all cost, and saying that maybe Kirigan's plan actually makes sense would make an interesting narrative. (They are at war dammit, there's no black and white only grey.)
Mal and Alina don't act like soldiers in a war-torn country, they act like American teenagers, and it's annoying. The General and Ivan are the only ones who act as soldiers in a 3 front war. When the villain shows the most responsibility in your story you should rewrite your heroes completely, or make the villain your hero.
The show is better than the books. It's a rare phenomenon but it is something everyone agrees upon. To me, the first book reads like a draft the author forgot to expand. The worldbuilding, the Grisha, and the characters were a perfect base to an original fantasy universe, but it all falls flat. The show made it richer by introducing multiple POVs and giving the actors more leeway (Ben Barnes ladies and gentlemen). But in the end, they had to stick to the books.
This is incredibly confusing to me because we have numerous fanfictions about Alina staying at the Little Palace, embracing her Grisha side, helping the Darkling because his plan makes sense, or changing his plan by coming up with a better one, or having dark!Alina etc... Clearly, this is what book fans wanted: giving Alina agency, make her realize that she had to work with the Darkling because she's Grisha too and they have the same goals but have different methods, let her be Professor X to Alexander's Magneto, ending the corrupt and incompetent Lantsov line, anything would have been better than taking Baghra's words at face value and running off.
Change I like: the whole West-Ravka storyline, it made the General decision understandable. Zlatan sold Grisha to the fjerdans, wanted to kill Alina and his actions could have led to a civil war, Kirigan only acted as a general of his time (not 21 century guys, we are talking about the unforgiving 19 century) and besides we only see the destruction of Zlatans army (BTW they were ready to kill everyone on the skiff) and not the whole city.
Change I don't like: making Alina half Shu. I'm not completely against it, but it was poorly executed. The racism Alina faces overshadows the Grisha-hate, rather than complementing it. Alina acts like being half Shu is somehow worse than being Grisha, eventough there are literal Holocausts going on against Grisha in two neighbouring countries, slavery in another, and the show never addresses it. This is the biggest problem with her character, she never embraces being Grisha, sides with the muggles, and makes her mission to kill the only person who stands between Grisha and persecution.
Would have been good: the show could have made little 5 minute scenes depicting the plight of Grisha in other countries. Either at the beginning or the end of every episode.
Episode 2: the Ice Court
Episode 3: the Shu concentration camps with the experimenting
Episode 4: slavery in Kerch
Episode 5: the Wandering Isle with consuming grisha blood
Episode 6: the Demon in the Woods storyline
Episode 7: Luda+Aleksander
And now... The Darkling/ Aleksander Morozov/ General Kirigan: the most interesting character in the entire series.
In the first half of SaB he was depicted as every soldier's dream general. Sitting and eating with his men, fighting side by side with them, constantly checking on his troops while other generals prefer to attend court. But in the second half, he transforms into a Mustache Twirling Villain TM and makes rather OOC decisions throughout the trilogy. He could have been a generic villain from the start, but why make him then a compelling character with understandable motivations?
In the books, I understood his motivations, but in the show, he was completely right. His backstory shows that he tried peaceful tactics but those never worked out. The only thing that worked against his enemies was power and violence. The price of hesitance was Luda's life (I'm willing to bet they were married). The Fold was actually a mistake born from desperation. He spent centuries in hiding, seeing his people persecuted. Even with the Little Palace and the Second Army Grisha are considered second-class citizens, they can't hold properties. He has to walk the fine line between usefulness and being a threat. He has to bow to incompetent Kings who don't give a shit about the state of the country. If Alina had to go through so much how would she end up? Because it's a miracle that Aleksander still has it in him to fight for the Grisha.
Many bring up Nikolai Lantsov as the Darklings foil ( or Diet Darkling as @ambitious-witch calls him) to show there is an alternative to Aleksander, but it's wrong. Because Nikolai was never part of an oppressed minority group, never had to fear centuries of persecution, he's an actual prince, it's easy to not be radicalized with his background.
Bonus: If Bardugo wanted to create a fictional world with tsarist Russia as a base, the least she could have done is to open a Wikipedia page or a dictionary for the correct names and terms. Starkov is a man's name: Alina Starkova is the correct form. Ilya Morozov, Aleksander Morozov, and Baghra Morozova would be the correct forms.
EDIT: They could have shown the building of the Little Palace and the start of the Second Army. I wanted to see the normal life at the Little Palace before Alina came along, little Grisha enjoying their powers, their reaction if the Darkling comes to see their training (I headcanon he visits the lessons at least once a year), the other teachers, and their reaction to Alina. Alina in canon is good with kids, maybe if she had spent time with little Grisha, she could have embraced her powers sooner. Having met with foreigners (Fjerdan, or Shu) and hearing their gruesome accounts of the foreign treatment of the Grisha would made her willing to fight for their future.

Figuring out some of my AUs on Shadowhunters (and i have PLENTY bc why does this fandom fit, like, EVERYTHING???)
This one is a crossover with a wonderful Russian graphic novel “Exlibrium” originally created by Bubble studio (the authors of Major Grom btw) Explaining some details: the novel tells us about an organization that deals with fiction characters that come out from “awakened” books to our real world and cause troubles... And actually all its members were once harmed by those characters, became infected with a (kinda) transformed ink and - after an initiation - got a certain “spectral color” and a superpower connected with it (the original plot is amazing but sooo hard to describe :,) ) But thinking about it is quite fun, so: - Jace got azure = super speed so he is a freaking pain in the ass  - Clary is a holder of green and is able to heal (but not much of a fighter) - Isabelle - red & fire, because it is just HER - Simon was unlucky to get purple which gives an ability to control time and is quite dangerous so EVERYBODY HUNTS HIM LOL NOTHING CHANGED - Alec’s color is grey that is not normal (like black or white also) and he is under a certain control which makes him deal with a lot of issues (including mental) - Magnus... is not even a human being one of book characters who work on this organization  -and I assure you the things are a lot more complicated and in my head I’ve got a pretty big remake of the original TSC story based on this setting but ANGEL GIVE ME STRENGTH TO WRITE IT- Hope u enjoyed :>

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS??? I HAVE A LOT OF THOUGHTS BEAR WITH ME PLEASE.
1. My favorite thing of course is how Clary and Jace didn’t give up on their artistic side? Like she legit built herself a studio??? Jace practicing music seriously and composing originals??????
2. Lmao I love how Chairman Meow has run away enough times for Jace and Simon to write a song about it. Chairman is so extra and iconic like his father!!
3. The name ‘Adele’ has a strong history among the nephilim - ARE THEY REFERRING TO TESSA’S MOM?
4. Lmao the shade towards Alec’s wardrobe is *chef’s kiss*
5. Magnus giving introverted hobbies a try and then giving up on them after 2.5 seconds to officially take up partying as a hobby cause he needs attention is the most hilarious shit.
6. THEY CALLED OUT IZZY’S NERDY ASS.
7. Omg Simon keeps in touch with his family through fan fiction sjfhjhvjke.
8. Okay but Jonathan doing crazy pranks to get his father’s attention and then Valentine being like “welp at least he ain’t killing nobody’ is the sooooo insane!!!!!
9. I love the tmi gang <3

April l was apparently the month for me to revisit some children’s authors who are steeped in controversy at the moment. So here’s my hot (well, lukewarm) takes on issues that absolutely do not need a single other person talking about them. Also some actual good books that I read this month!
Tumblr media
Badger in the Basement
The Animal Ark books are a childhood classic — though I recently found out that apparently there’s a difference between American and British publications, and the American versions didn’t include a lot of actual COOL animals which is… bizarre. As a Canadian stuck in the middle of this, this nonsense drives me nuts. This one was about the main character, the daughter of pair of vets, trying to protect a local badger sett from men wanting to participate in badger digging and baiting. These books are always feel-good, and it was a nice single-day-read while I waited for a library book to come in.
Tumblr media
Chi’s Sweet Home
The cutest manga series about the misadventures of a little kitten, Chi, who has been adopted by a loving family. I’ve never bothered to read them in order, but apparently this time I stumbled across the last in the series -- whoops! Still, stood on it’s own pretty easily, and it was a fun read! Things get tense when the family realize that they may have found Chi’s original home… and may have to give up Chi forever.
Tumblr media
Earth Before Us: Dinosaur Empire!
This was an odd graphic novel, I feel like I’m not sure who the target audience was exactly. It was a nonfiction comic done in a Magic School Bus style, with the purpose of teaching current, up-to-date facts about the animals that lived in the Mesozoic Era. If you’re into dinosaurs, you’ll probably enjoy this! The art is absolutely adorable, I love the dinosaur illustrations, and I learnt some really neat facts. That being said, the pages are really dense, and there’s a lot of info crammed in… some of it will probably go way over a child’s head without specific additional teaching or a very strong personal interest. But that being said, a dinosaur obsessed kid is still probably going to really dig this… as would a dinosaur obsessed adult. It wasn’t my cup of tea exactly but I’m sure it is someone’s.
Tumblr media
assorted Dr Seuss Books
I love these types of controversies because it means getting to listen to every moron who has never had an opinion on Dr Seuss ever start generating a mile of them out of the aether. So many people are so mad about the six books that are getting retired and I bet most of them haven’t even read them. These are not the friggin Cat In The Hat or The Lorax or even the likes of Yertle The Turtle. I was raised by a grade one teacher, was a voracious reader who loved Dr Seuss, and wrote my university thesis on children’s literature, and I still only knew two of the six books on that list. So by all means, if you want to write an essay explaining why those specific books are worth clinging to, feel free, but if you haven’t even heard of them maybe it’s not a big deal. *grumble*
Anyway, my grousing aside, it gave me the urge to reread a bunch of Seuss books, including the two retiring books I personally knew: McElligot’s Pool and To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. I do still enjoy both, especially McElligot’s Pool which always sparked my imagination, but it’s obvious why they’re being retired and I personally think it’s the right choice. There’s so much good kidlit out there, we can survive without these.

Goodbye, My Rose Garden
A f/f romance manga, fairly standard fair though cute if you’re looking for some historical angst, pretty dresses, and mutual pining. A young Japanese woman moves to England in the hopes of meeting a writer (Mr Frank) who she has long admired. Along the way she is employed by an enigmatic woman with plenty of money, rumours, and melancholy following her. I’ll be honest, uncut romance isn’t really my genre, but I’ll probably still try to the second book to see if the story picks up.
Tumblr media
From The Holocaust to Hogan’s Heroes: The Autobiography of Robert Clary
It’s no secret that I’ve been on a Hogan’s Heroes kick. This is the autobiography of Roberty Clary, who plays my favourite character in the show, Louis Lebeau. And holy shit what a life this man has had. He was a Jew growing up in France before the start of the war, and who was one of many children taken away from his family and sent off to the concentration camps in Germany. This was an amazing, intense, inspiring, and heartbreaking read… it has Clary’s voice all over it, and it tells everything from the charming childhood he had, to the horrors of the concentration camps, the brutality of survival, and then about his exciting journey into the entertainment industry afterwards. It’s an experience, would recommend if you’re a fan of the show.
Tumblr media
The Ickabog
The second controversial author I read this month. Originally I was going to give Rowling’s new book a miss, given everything that’s been going on over the past few years, but in the end my curiosity got the better of me. Politics aside, it was a fun read! Not groundbreaking, but enjoyable enough and written in an interesting style. It didn’t read the same as a lot of modern kidlit, it felt more like a cross between a classic fairytale and a Dahl book. Perhaps a bit like Despereaux. It tells the tale of how an idyllic country gradually falls into ruin through the ignorance, inaction, and greed, and how a supposedly fictional monster hides the very real, human monsters at the heart of the country. It was cute and pleasant and I’m glad I decided to get it from the library, though for anyone who is choosing not to engage for political reasons: you aren’t missing anything major.
Tumblr media
Franklin In The Dark
A Canadian classic. I don’t think there’s a single person my age who hasn’t read or been read a pile of these books, and the nostalgia is so comforting. I found this on Youtube and listened to someone read it to me, and honestly 10/10 would recommend for a calm evening.
The big reason I decided to seek this one out though, was because I finally got to the M*A*S*H episode that inspired this entire series! In the episode C*A*V*E, in which Hawkeye is freaking out over his claustrophia while the camp is forced to take shelter in a nearby cave during some intense shelling, he mentions that if he had been born a turtle he would have been afraid of his own shell, and that the other turtles would make fun of him cause he’d be forced to walk around in his underwear. And so this first story about a young turtle who’s afraid to sleep in his own shell and drags it around behind him. So if you were ever curious, Franklin the Turtle is in fact named after Dr Benjamin Franklin Pierce. (this is also why the French version is named Benjamin!)

Wolves of the Beyond: Lone Wolf
I loved the Guardians of Ga’Hoole books as a kid but I never read the Wolves of the Beyond series. This first book was an interesting read, Lasky does a great job creating worlds and societies for the animals that inhabit them. Lone Wolf is about a deformed wolf cub who was abandoned in the wilderness to die. And he would have, if a desperate mother bear, who had recently had her only cub killed, hadn’t stumbled across him and saved him, vowing to raise him as her own...

Petals
A “silent” graphic novel. It has beautiful artwork and is told entirely through pictures, no text at all. It’s loves and heart-wrenching, though it left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied… I felt like there should have been more. Still, a neat story.

The Southern Book Club‘s Guide To Slaying Vampires
What a banger of a novel!! I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s about a group of suburban mothers in the ‘80s who form a book club out of a shared need for community and a love of grisly true crime novels. But when a strange drifter appears in town and starts setting down roots… and when children begin disappearing… these women need to band together to confront the horrors that have invaded their neighbourhood, and face down not only a terrifying monster among them but the patriarchal system that allows it to flourish. To quote the preface:
“Because vampires are the original serial killers, stripped of everything that makes us human — they have no friends, no family, no roots, no children. All they have is hunger. They eat and eat but they’re never full. With this book, I wanted to pit a man freed from all responsibilities but his appetites against women whose lives are shaped by their endless responsibilities. I wanted to pit Dracula against my mom.    As you’ll see, it’s not a fair fight.“

The Weirn Books: Be Wary of the Silent Woods
I love Chmakova’s graphic novels, though I’ve only ever read her slice-of-life middle grade series before. This one is pure fantasy and very fun. It’s about two cousin “weirns” — witches with demon familiars — who attend the local night school. Things get strange though when an ominous figure appears outside the old, abandoned school house deep in the Silent Woods, and begins tempting children down its path…
I’m very much looking forward to word of a second book and was honestly kind of surprised that I haven’t heard more about this book given how popular her other series is. This has all the same charm and quirks but for those of us who prefer stories based in fantasy rather than reality.
And A Bonus...
For some masochistic reason I got a Garfield book out of the library. Jeez, if I didn’t love these as a kid, I found them absolutely laugh out loud hilarious, and now I just don’t see it anymore. But here I will share the one strip in the book that actually made me laugh

The Mortal Instruments – Graphic Novel Vol.3 Story by Cassandra Clare, Artwork by Cassandra Jean
Warning: Spoilers
With the first two volumes in this series I already knew what was going to happen based on what I’d seen from the 2013 film, volume three is the first one in which I’m reacting to (mostly) unknown story developments, and as such this is going to be a very different type of review: it will be me gushing over what I find exciting, and scowling all the disappointments.
Speaking of disappointments, when I saw this cover I got super excited that we were going to see the beginning of Alec and Magnus’ relationship, the only clips I’d seen of the tv series were relating to them and I absolutely loved it. The biggest disappointment with graphic novel volume three is that their relationship happens “off-screen”, we get hits that things have happened between them but we don’t see ANY of it first-hand. We get a casual comment from Magnus that they’ve been “friendly” with each other, and Alec getting embarrassed at a love bite on his neck, and Jace remarking that he doesn’t understand why they are keeping their relationship secret. A glance here, a glance there. And that’s it. Now it could be that in the Mortal Instrument novels the Alec/Magnus storyline does indeed happen off-screen and the graphic novels have stuck to that, while the tv series had more time to show us their development, but still, I can’t suppress how disappointed I am, I was really looking forward to seeing their romance blossom.
Simon is probably the only character in this fictional world that I truly hate, he’s the dopey-eyed best friend, secretly yet not-so-secretly in love with Clary, the type to always be insinuating things but never saying them outright, always giving longing looks but never brave enough to declare their feelings properly. In this volume he calls her his girlfriend and kisses her. When someone asks Clary about it she says that she and Simon haven’t actually discussed becoming anything more than friends.
There are parallels between Simon and Clary’s relationship and Luke and Jocelyn’s, both Simon and Luke are in platonic yet potentially romantic relationships with women who are (or have been) attracted to someone else, and that someone else is more “alpha”, more charismatic than the “secondary men”. However the reason why Luke’s character works is because he has a lot more going on aside from his relationship with Jocelyn: he has a history with Valentine, he’s a werewolf and has a clan, he’s a parental figure to Clary and a source of wisdom, and he commands respect. Simon on the other hand is a mopey teenager who plays in a band and 80% of his life seems dedicated to pinning over Clary.
While it is true that Simon is going to be turned into a vampire and that is going to bring all sorts of new conflicts and drama to his life, it doesn’t fix the fact that his base character is so MEH. I’ve seen some spoilers that suggest that he and Isabelle might become a thing, which I absolutely hate, Isabelle’s character feels much older, much more mature, and she deserves more than this wimpy kid. However I am very keen on new character Maia, she looks about the same age as Simon, she’s super cute but with a bit of sass, it’s great to have more characters of different ethnic groups, and I think the fact that she’s a werewolf and Simon is a vampire and those two groups hate each other could make a potential Maia x Simon pairing really interesting, dramatic and hot.
Another pairing that I would love is Isabelle and faerie knight, Merliorn. Her over-flirtatious nature against his stoic appearance is perfection. But again spoilers indicate that Isabelle x Simon is the end goal, I’m sorry I just don’t see it.
Other comments, I find Jace’s rebel boy pick-a-fight-with-anyone attitude quite tiresome. But I’m happy with the progress between him and Clary, I already know the spoiler regarding them so I’m not on the edge of my seat for them, but I like them as a couple, helped greatly by how Clary is so likeable in the graphic novel. I am so glad I’m reading the graphic novels instead of the original novels because I can’t imagine dedicating so much reading time to multiple will-they-won’t-they romantic couples. I am, however, loving the supernatural world, really love the introduction to the faerie court and how they get in there via the moon’s reflection on a lake, and I’m liking the introduction of more werewolf and vampire characters.
Side Note: the illustrator has created a few colour illustrations that show character floral bouquets, at first I didn’t really like these, I feel like she should have drawn the bodies because it feels a little like floating heads, however I do find it interesting to read which flowers she’s picked, what they mean in the language of flowers and how that represents the character’s personality.

“Celia, this is – my father, Michael Wayland.”, he turned to him, “this is Celia Velázquez, I'm sure the name is familiar to you.”
Celia realized that Michael was looking her up and down as if evaluating her.
“You are supposed to be dead…”, she said.
“Aren't you too?”

Clari, may i ask you to explain why you love twin peaks so much? i want to start watching it and instead of googling reviews or watching trailers i want YOUR opinion over anyones lmao
AH OKAY ANON SORRY IT TOOK ME A FEW DAYS TO GET TO THIS but i was finishing up bmb and i wanted to be able to take my time on this ask and give it my full attention so!!!
WAAAAAAAH okay, first of all, david lynch is just one of my favourite directors ever. i love him so much, i love all of his work, and it’s so difficult for me to put into words WHY, because lynch’s work focuses so much on FEELINGS; or at least, it does to me!! they’re quite bizarre but they’re so DREAMY. they evoke so many feelings in the viewer and honestly watching one of his films is literally a whole experience in and of itself. i’d even argue that he borders the line of the art film, too. see aaah i’m already having trouble explaining what i mean here, but it’s like idk you’ll watch a scorsese film or a carpenter film and yeah, of course, it evokes emotions but we almost instantaneously know why we’re reacting that way. does that make sense??? they’re a little more straightforward in their messages, in their story/plot, in their characters, etc.
i personally feel that lynch’s work goes a lot deeper than that; it really makes you think and question and it’s almost introspective in that way as well??? because (to me) with his work, it instills all of these emotions in you, but sometimes you aren’t exactly sure WHY you’re feeling the way you’re feeling--it’s a little challenging, and you have to do more work to understand the film or understand your personal reaction to the film. i also just love everything lynch thinks about art in general; i find his presence very calming and i agree with many of his sentiments surrounding art as a whole. okay now that i’ve rambled about my love for him
twin peaks is a fantastic intro to lynch (although of course he didn’t direct/write every single episode, but the show itself is truly imbued with his whole presence and all of his themes, just toned down a little. most of this was due to abc in the 90s; which means fair warning, season 3 is much more lynchian than the first two seasons, and it is honestly more of a 18 part movie than it is a television show!!). to be honest with you anon, i’d say twin peaks is one of the biggest influences on my own work!! i love the dreaminess which is almost infused with these feelings of hopelessness and despair, i love how bittersweet it is, i love love LOVE how the universe as a whole is a few degrees removed from our actual reality, i love the characters and their relationships,  i love the way it plays with drama and the human subconscious, i love the aesthetic, i love the air of mystery that surrounds the whole twin peaks universe, i love all of its beautiful surrealism...it’s so STRANGE in such a lovely way, it reminds me a little of the original twilight zone too.
it’s so hard for me to explain it anon, but it’s so much more than a murder mystery (and tbh it knows this; it’s self-reflexive to an extent, especially with invitation to love, which is a satirical fictional soap opera in the world of twin peaks). i feel like it deals with the human condition in a way??? because there’s significant focus on emotions, dreams, hallucinations, death, morality, etc etc all wrapped up in this thin translucent element of the supernatural.
give it a try and see if it hooks you from the beginning or not!!! i’m sorry this is a bit of a mess ehehehe, interpreting twin peaks feels especially personal (i relate to some of the characters a LOT and the town itself reminds me of my hometown so much its scary) so i’m not sure if you’ll feel the way i do when you watch it, which is totally okay and completely valid!!! the fandom is STILL cooking up theories etc honestly there are ENDLESS theories for the twin peaks universe as a whole (it spans books + a movie as well). with that being said, please let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to expand upon here or if you have more specific questions!!
i’d also just warn you that you will not get closure with this show; it is extremely open-ended, so keep that in mind to if that isn’t exactly your thing!! aaaah i hope u give it a try n like it tho anon!! <333

Hi Anon,
First of all I know this is long but please if you want to know a little about why I love TSC so much read it. 🧡💛
Jace my golden boy how he saved me.
I have never actually been extremely open entirely about it and this is extremely personal but I will say, I found these books in a time in my life when I was at an end, I didn't know who I was, who i wanted to be, i didn't really see myself in any fictional characters and I had just come back from an incident that made my family and friends and even people who didn't know me look at me differently. I was dealing with totally strangers commenting on my scars and saying things that are still with me to this day, and I was ashamed of myself and I felt like a total fuck up and let down to my family and it is why the incident happened in the first place.
I remember after said incident I asked my mom if we could go to the book store it was originally to get the other two Hunger Games books and I remember my mom saw City of Bones and was 'you know your big sister read these books.' And I was like okay I'll get it it won't hurt. And we came back home that day and I showed my big sis and she was like 'omg! You are going to love it! And you'll relate to Clary a lot, she reminds me of you actually, and she is like you, she looks delicate like a doll but she's not and she's strong and tough like you.' I remember being like I'll have to read this then and so I picked City of Bones up eventually and after the first couple chapters I went to my mom and was like 'hey listen i need you to order me the rest of these books cause i need these.' And she did and i remember i related to Clary and lot but i related so much to the character my sis didn't think I would, I related to Jace Herondale, I had and still have always been afraid of love, cause of how it can destroy you, and I remember dealing with all my mental issues and see him deal with his and his he held it all in and pretended he was fine and acted tough and strong and like things didn't hurt him and I saw myself in him. I remember later on relating to his issues with his parents more so in these recent months with my mother and the way she has been treating me.
But I remember reading about how he was told how his sensitivity was a weakness, how his gentleness was a weakness, how his empathy was a weakness, how his softness was a weakness and I saw the many times I was told you are gentle and the world breaks and crushes gentle things, so you need to toughen up. And I remember trying to bury that part of myself like Jace tried to do. I remember so many saying how beautiful I was and how my mom needs to keep an eye on me, and then reading the quote "the world breaks beautiful things." And suddenly it all hit differently. I remember how he was with things like his pain and how I saw in him how he didn't want to bother people with it or be pitied for it and how I was the same way. I remember growing up seeing blondes portrayed as just ditzy and the dumb one, and I remember growing up hating my hair cause of that, cause everyone will think I am just a ditz, in fact it's why I dyed it dark. And then I read about Jace and how yes he has his dumb moments but he is also smart, he is strong, he is so much more then just a blonde, and he made me want to go back to my natural hair color and own myself. I remember being so insecure in my looks and hating my looks so much but reading about Jace gave me so much confidence and he has been a big part of where my confidence has come from, I look in the mirror and I see beautiful now. I remember what it was like to see the character who has so much trauma and mental issues to win, to win against his abuser, to win against the people who constantly made comments, to win against his battles, to win against his demons and find love and acceptance, to see Jace happy and in love with Clary gave me the hope that maybe I could actually find love and happiness myself, maybe my story doesn't have to stay a tragedy *cliche of me to say I know*, seeing him win against his abuser was honestly an eye opener and watching him blame himself for the abuse is something i did for a long time, I always listened when they said 'we are talking to you like this' or 'we are doing this' cause they wanted me to be tough enough for the world. Jace made me realize that my abuser was in fact abusing me and manipulating me and using me.
I dealt with hearing said abuser say things like 'she's a life destroyer' through my walls every night and I remember thinking i deserved it and that i really was one.
I remember when I first read Jace say no to Valentine and I was like you can say no to your parent??? And I realized how I wasn't allowed to have an opinion in my parent's house and how nothing I ever said was validated or important, in fact I was told to do as I was told and be obedient. I remember how when he talked about plants he reminded me of the love I have for plants and it brought back childhood memories of me talking to plants and telling them they are beautiful. I remember reading about him talking to church and how I used to have conversations with my cat and share all the tea with him and how much of a comfort he was to me.
I remember first reading about how Jace played the Piano and how the Piano has Always interested me and how I always wished I knew how to play it. I remember Jace saying he read a bunch of books as a kid and how I used to read books as a kid, I remember when I was first able to read on my own and how proud I was of myself and how I would sit and just read, it was my escape from my parents constantly screaming they hate each at each other and how they could just leave and not come back. I remember first reading about how Valentine being gone affected Jace and how when I first lost my bio dad how even though I was extremely hurt by him in ways how he was gone and how in a way I was abandoned which is something I am extremely afraid of. I remember how I saw a broken teenager and saw myself in him. I have never looked at myself as anything but a broken girl really and I remember how numb I was, how hard i had tried to shut my feelings off, and I remember reading about Jace brought back my feelings and how he made me want to own my brokenness, he made me want to own my gentleness, he made me want to own my sensitive side. I remember seeing him with kids and I saw myself, I have always had a passion for kids and how beautiful and innocent their spirits are and how I have always wanted to protect them from what the adults are going to tell them. I remember how Jace made me want to be happy and how he truly brought my feelings back. I remember how my feelings just came back and things started hurting me more often again but in a way it was a reminder that hey you are back. I read about how fragile he is and how I am the same way, you can break me so easily, and I remember his quote about god and how I said something very similar.
Now onto Clary since I have already made this post long.
Clary Clary Clary where do I start you beautiful red haired girl, she showed me that the small short girl can be the hero, as a 5'2 girl myself, I look up to her and she inspired me, she encouraged me and she just showed me so much bravery and projected that bravery onto me. She showed me size doesn't matter at all. *I have always been teased about my height* she taught me that forgiveness is important and that giving another chance is important but that they need to change. She taught me kindness and cheerfulness, I remember reading about how she loved this anime called Bleach and I was like hey that's my favorite anime, I remember reading about she read Manga and I was like hey I read Manga, I remember reading about her curly hair and how I had curly hair, I grew up hating my curly hair cause it wasn't like all these other girls hair and now I absolutely love it and would never give it up, and Clary played a part in it, I know to some the hair stuff may not seem like a big deal but I used to hate my hair with a passion and these two characters made me love it. I remember what it was like seeing the girl save the guy instead of the other way and how strong and brave Clary is.
Recently Clary's bravery saved me, I went through something that totally shook up my world and changed my life completely but if i hadn't thought about Clary's bravery and something similar that happened to her it would have been much worse and I am so thankful for her, and i remember reading about the way Clary sees the world and how i see it in similar ways. I see the Beauty and the Horror, and I see it in a gray way. I remember seeing her fight for her loved ones and how I fight for mine. And Goodness there is so much more, I remember how so many see Clary as delicate and fragile but how she is actually extremely tough and how that's how I am, somebody pushes me and expects me to go into the ground but I don't. I remember how she is kinda nerdy and how I am too.
I remember what Clace did for me and showed me you can be happy and you can find love. They taught me so freaking much and have built me into who I am today.
MALEC TIME
And one last mention Alec Lightwood-Bane and Magnus Lightwood-Bane, they were the first Queer couple that said hey you're valid! To me and they represented me in a way I didn't think I could be, they mean so much and are so very dear to me. Reading about them has truly also shaped me into who I am. I remember first reading about them and wanting to cry because they were Queer characters that weren't just comical relief or there to be killed off, and they got a happy ending, *for now* I remember it like and pat on the head saying babie you are valid and you are beautiful and you will find someone who will cherish and love you like Alec Lightwood-Bane loves Magnus Lightwood-Bane, I remember seeing Magnus own his bisexuality and not being ashamed or take shit about how he wasn't valid cause damnit Bisexuals are valid.
Again there is so much more but hey this is extremely long and it's almost 3 am and It's that time of night where everything just pours out of me and i may regret saying all this later.
If you would like to hear more just ask.
Anyway Anon have a good day and thank you for this.
And I want you all to know this is not very much like me but with everything that's going on I want you to know, what TSC has done for me.

Ok so I have a couple fanfic ideas, and if anyone can write them PLEASE DO SO!! And if you know any fics that fit any of these descriptions please send them my way. THANK YOU!!
Ok so these are gonna be for a whole bunch of different fandoms, and when I think of some others, I’ll add them as I go. All plots and ships can be adapted, just a loose idea of what I want to happen. Some I can’t think of characters so that’s up to you.
Song fics:
1. My heart I surrender - I Prevail
Ship: Bakudeku (Boku no Hero Academia)
Plot: Either Bakugo or Deku or even both (doesn’t really matter, fits both, will be referred to by K/D/B) are having crisis over feelings or something happening to the other, and to get over said thing and get back on rhythm, the class does a singing contest/karaoke, starts off alright then K/D/B either choose this song or say they want to sing an original song - could also be a band au. Sprinkle a little bit of angst of childhood memories and badabing badaboom you got a bkdk story.
2. Astronaut - Simple Plan
Main focus: Lance (Voltron)
Ship: I think no ship would be better but if you want a ship, I don’t care who.
Plot: Langst. You know the standard, Lance is ignored, his homesickness, depression and anxieties are bass boosted to the max, and no one notices -if ship is included they are the only exception- and he is reading into things too much. Standard langst, I really don’t care what kind you write. Anyway, on one particularly bad day, Lance is yelled at more because everyone is having a bad day, because Lance decided to take a night off from putting everyone to bed because he wanted to have a day for himself, Lance is feeling especially down, goes into the earth room, or could be singing to child, or to calm himself down, but either way he is singing astronaut by Simple Plan, you can decide if he has a guitar for this, but someone overhears -could be ship or just random person- and realises that ‘Hey, Lance isn’t ok’, and tells the team and they realise they have taken him for granted and so on so forth, end it however you want.
3. Gone too soon - Simple Plan
Ship: Malec (Shadowhunters)
Plot: Alec dies, could be on a mission or from old age, Magnus grieves and plays this to help get over it.
If mission: Jace, Clary, Izzy, Simon, Raphael and whoever else, they all go over to see how Magnus is doing after the funeral, and they walk into him playing it on guitar, while wearing alecs clothes, a slideshow of his memories of Alec and all Alec’s belongings around him, he is singing when he starts to cry and hyperventilate, and everyone rushes over to him to comfort where he just breaks because Fuck this is the hardest goodbye he has ever felt since his mother died.
If Old Age: start off with Alec in hospital or something, him and Magnus laying together in the bed, Magnus wakes up and realises that Alec is gone, fast forward to the funeral, Alec was the last one of that generation to pass, Magnus visits the cemetery whenever he can, one day he takes a guitar, or not, and sings the song he wrote to them all because these people were his family, one he had been looking for for centuries. Finish with Magnus walking away, and the ghosts of the shadowhunters sitting on their gravestones all embracing as they realise that Magnus has finally accepted it and will begin to heal and move on.
Movie Au:
1. The Greatsest Showman
Ship: Literally any ship, I live for Greatest Showman/Circus AU’s - cannot get enough of them, wish there were more for my ships.
2. The Broken Hearts Gallery
Ship: Bakudeku with past Tododeku
Side ships: Kirishido, Ochiida, and Shenki
Plot: I know this movie has literally just been released in cinemas, I saw it today, but on my way home from watching it I was trying to think which ship would it fit with, and that ship is all I could think of. So Deku as Lucy, collects random crap from past relationships, lives with Shinsou and Ochako, Iida basically lives there too -moved in with Uraraka if you want- Deku is dating Todoroki -plays Max. They work in an exhibit together under Aizawa, or someone like that, when on the opening night of an exhibit, Monama -Plays Harvard- tells Deku that Momo has come back and that she and Todo are getting along. Deku gets drunk and has to introduce Todo as director of exhibit, makes a fool of himself, later that night after being dumped by Todo, and fired, he gets into what he thinks is his Uber, but is literally just Bakugo’s (Nick) car. Literally just follow rest of storyline. Marcos: Kirishima, Marcos’ wife: Mina, Chloe: whoever you want as Bakugo’s ex that shows up for a total of like 5 minutes, max.
Love, Simon:
Ship: Doesn’t matter, I want to read one of Bakudeku, or Bokuaka/Kuroken.
Simon: Baku/Akaashi/Kuroo
Blue: Deku/Bokuto/Kenma
Nick: Kami/Kuroo/Yaku
Abby: Shinso/Kenma/Lev
Leah: Kiri/Tsukki (couldn’t think of someone else)/Bokuto
Martin: Monama/Oikawa/Oikawa (can’t think of anyone else)
Cinderella story series:
Ship: Bakudeku, BokuAka, Kuroken
Plot: Any ship can fit the plots, each movie could be the same ship or you could switch it up and have a different ship for each one, for example,
First movie:
Bakugo as Austen, Deku as Sam, Uraraka as Carter, Aizawa or All Might as Rhonda, Hisashi as Fiona, Shigi and Dabi as Breanna and Gabriella.
Second movie:
Akaashi as Mary, Bokuto as Joey, Kuroo as Dustin, Kenma as Tammy, everyone else up to you.
Third movie:
Kenma as Katie, Kuroo as Luke, Hinata as Angela, Bokuto as Mickey, Lev as victor, everyone else up to you.
Tropes and ideas I want to read more of:
1. Cheerleading: Example: Bakudeku
Deku would be a cheerleader, Bakugo would be Football player.
2. Lance’s birthday is forgotten
3. Lance is forgotten when group is deciding something/left out of recreational activities (see @blueplanettrash’s story Three little questions)
4. Anything angsty regarding Lance, but also for any character.
Uhhh, that’s all for now, I’ll add others as I think of them, thank you for reading. And if you want to write any of these please go ahead, adapt them to your style and ships, this is just an idea of fan fiction that I want to read.
