Aline: I thought Jace was dating that vampire.
Alec: “No. Jace is not dating Simon. Jace is straight. Simon is straight.”
The two mfs in city of ashes:
Simon: I could’ve killed you.
Jace: I would’ve let you.
Aline: that’s straight??????

Literally all of The Shadowhunter Chronicle romances are completely unhinged it’s not even funny (I lied, it’s very funny). Here’s just some examples:
William “Will” Herondale/James “Jem” Carstairs + Theresa “Tessa” Gray: It totally would have been a vee type polyamorous situation if it wasn’t for all the death and 1800s London society going on.
Henry Branwell + Charlotte Fairchild: How dare this misogynistic society put us together, I mean, we wanted to get together anyway, but not for those reasons. Welp, time to be as unconventional as possible.
Gabriel Lightwood + Cecily Herondale: Look, you made fun of my sister, it’s only fair that I marry your sister; that’s the rules.
Gideon Lightwood + Sophia “Sophie” Collins: Dad, I have a perfectly valid reason to betray you and go to the other side. What your doing is wrong and – nO tHiS haS nOThiNG to do wiTh tHeIR mAid wHy wOUlD yoU eVEn sAy tHat?
Jesse Blackthorn + Lucie Herondale: Your request to not be brought back to life has been denied, deal with it.
James “Jamie” Herondale + Cordelia Carstairs: He didn’t commit arson we were just having sex – why are you all looking at me like that’s worse?
Anna Lightwood + Ariadne Bridgestock: Listen, there’s a lot of society going on right now, so we’re going to have to get together in secret. Oh, you don’t want to? Okay, never mind, fuck society, let me win you back real quick.
Christopher Lightwood + Grace Cartwright: Oh good, you broke into my house, now we can talk about science.
Thomas Lightwood + Alastair Carstairs: I’d really like to hate you, but I think the biggest problem with that is that I love you. Once I get over that hurdle, I think we’ll be in the clear.
Lucian “Luke” Graymark + Jocelyn Fairchild: Good job on us for breaking away from the genocidal cult run by our best friend/husband; we should hook up, you know, as a reward.
Jonathan “Jace” Herondale + Clarissa “Clary” Fairchild: Ayo the same guy conducted experiments on our blood, that’s crazy; btw so glad we’re not actually siblings.
Alexander “Alec” Lightwood + Magnus Bane: Marrying each other is against the law? Okay, fine, I’m a law biding citizen. Oh oops, I made it legal. I am the law now, and I want a wedding on the beach.
Simon Lovelace + Isabelle Lightwood: It makes sense to have our engagement party on the day of my brother’s death, that’s when we really started bonding.
Helen “Alessa” Blackthorn + Aline Penhallow: Well, I guess we’re going to go in exile together. Yes, I said together; your exile is my exile, what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine, that’s how relationships work.
Julian Blackthorn + Emma Carstairs: Yes, it’s a technical war crime to love each other, but the law itself is not really our main concern about it.
Kieran Hunter + Mark “Miach” Blackthorn + Cristina Rosales: We’re really living that cottage core aesthetic, and all we had to do to get here was do a small war and some amnesia. Worth it.
Gwyn ap Nudd + Diana Wrayburn: I’m going to stand by just in case something happens, but it probably won’t, she knows what she’s doing – WHY IS SHE JUMPING OUT THE TENTH STORY WINDOW OH MY GOD WAIT
Tiberius “Ty” Blackthorn + Christopher “Kit” Herondale: We take cosplaying Sherlock and Watson VERY seriously, so of course we needed to go to all the most illegal places, it’s only natural.
Ash Morgenstern + Drusilla “Dru” Blackthorn: So anyway I saw them in a sort of fever dream like state this one time and they’ve still been on my mind for years.

"TMI is the worst-written TSC series" Okay. Okay, you are objectively correct, but I think we need to appreciate how genuinely fun TMI is. It has a great group of characters, and all of them have distinct personalities and voices. It's fast-paced. The humor is genuine and omnipresent. It manages to be consistently lighthearted on a character/relationship level despite its darker underlying themes and plotlines. This isn't even to touch on the hugely important role that the series played as a pioneer for LGBT representation in modern literature.
TMI isn't good, but it's fun. And that's genuinely what matters. You can't go into it expecting a literary masterpiece, but you can expect a wild ride, time with some great well-developed heroes and heroines, and a witty and engaging tone. Tolerate the weird metaphors and grammatical mistakes. Forgive questionable plotlines. Clary Fairchild and her found family are worth it.

the lightwood family dynamic is so funny to me because:
- alec is, like, barely above mundane drinking age and running the whole shadowhunter government, which is basically the same age as his divorced, half deceased parents were when they were running around committing hate crimes. he’s married the notorious manic wizard down the street, magnus bane, who’s, like, 400-something and witnessed said parents’ hate crimes, and they’ve adopted an abandoned warlock child who is completely blue and a prickly 5 year old who doesn’t speak a word of english.
- jace was adopted because robert and maryse felt morally obligated to due to them thinking he was the son of robert’s ex-parabatai who was in love with him and didn’t even turn out being his father. he is engaged to clary who he thought was his sister but still wanted to bang, and she is the daughter of the leader of the hate cult robert and maryse were involved with and her older brother (who also wanted to bang her) killed jace’s adopted little brother. jace is parabatai with alec, who he offered to kissed once to prove a point.
- isabelle fights demons in stripper heels and is engaged (married?) to simon who is really just a guy. a guy who was randomly dragged into the their whole family disaster and turned into a vampire then drank her blood then saved her life then drank her brother’s blood because he saved her life, then forgot everything. then she dragged him back into her whole family disaster and they were will-they-won’t-they for forever (even though they were obviously will-they the whole time) and they had sex and he drank out of a shiny cup and became a shadowhunter.
- there was also this one time they were in hell and jace was having sex with clary and isabelle was making out with simon and alec was getting wine drunk by himself, all in same cave
i’m not even going to go into their parents because what the fuck

one thing about city of bones clary is that she literally always is yelling at jace and one thing about city of bones jace is that he does in fact deserve it every single time

hi cassie! i miss clary so so so so much and was wondering if you could hint at what we should emotionally prepare for in TWP since a lot of the elements are connected to her. last we know janus left off with the ominous “bring me clary fairchild” and we also know she dreams of sebastian sometimes so will there be interactions between her and janus and/or her and ash? clary and ash know of each other but i’m curious as to what seeing her late brothers son in the flesh will actually do to her, and even more scared for what janus will literally do to her
i’m assuming clary (and the other 5 ogs) will be in twp sparingly but more a focus in the black volume of the dead? please drop any obscure tbvotd clary tidbits you can, i’ll take anything!!!!
tysm and much love from seattle!
I mean, I think it's legit to be worried about Clary. We know Janus is focused on her, and that what he wants from her (undying love, for starters) is not anything she is in a position to give, or would want to give. We know Janus has Big Plans for the future and those involve Clary but they sure don't involve Jace, so there's that.
There will be interactions between Clary and Janus, more than Clary and Ash, at least at first. I think her feelings about Ash are very dependent on the kind of person Ash turns out to be, and we don't know much about that yet.
Clary and the other OGs will be indeed, in TWP but not the focus, and Clary/Jace still aren't the focus on Black Volume, as Malec are the focus. There is a Clace short story in the Better in Black short story collection that maybe addresses more of what you're asking about, so maybe that's the tidbit?
