well good day to all of you. i have a tale. a classified, certified absolute god tier disaster of a tale.

at the ripe hour of 6:45 am i was awoken from my slumber by a Noise. what sort of noise? you might be asking.

the sort of noise that usually accompanies my father getting up at the ass crack of dawn and trying not to turn on the tap loudly so that he doesnt wake us up.

for one blissful moment i thought that i was at home, in my bed, and all was right with the world.

and then i remembered that i live approximately four hours away from my parents and all is not right with the world.

so i did what any person would do. waited for the noise to go away.

but it did not.

so i investigated. in all my bleary eyed glory.

and found that my bathroom ceiling light was pissing.

not just a little either.

a severe, unauthorized amount of water was streaming out of my bathroom light fixture.

so after banging on katyas door and finding a bucket and throwing on a sweatshirt i dragged my tired ass down to the front desk and reported the tea as it were.

now one thing you need to know about our building is that it is old. the second thing you need to know about our building is that the maitenance guys (we call them the boys) are absolutely incredible, like tumblr funny guy posts but irl, however they take for fucking ever to respond to any situation.

this time though, nothing was in clear danger of exploding or lighting on fire. so we made some breakfast. drank some coffee. watched the bucket that we had put in the bathroom fill up with water. and we waited.

and waited.

and waited some more.

then i noticed that if you stepped on some of our kitchen floor tiles they started squelching.

so back downstairs i went and explained the tea as it were once again.

and let it be known, that i worked for two very solid and very miserable years as a resident assistant in college. i know all about the woes of people complaining to you to fix things that you cannot fix and you cannot tell them when it will be fixed because the person who needs to do the fixing is otherwise indisposed. so my general attitude towards this whole situation was "hey man you can't make this better for me and im really not pressed about it as long as someone eventually comes and sorts out my pissing ceiling." which is a great attitude to have in this general situation. and especially so because it was about to get even more strange.

at approximately 9:30am our apartment was graced by the presence of one of the boys. the maintenance man. we will call him james.

we have encountered james before. he delt with our fuse box nearly exploding. that situation was not nearly as chill as this one was.

hes also incredible.

so he comes in and he goes "hey how's it going" and i say "well you know things are just leaking!"

he proceeds to tell us that the fridge in the apartment above us had a connection pipe that froze and exploded some how and that managed to leak all into our apartment. not nearly what i was expecting but hey! at least they know what's going on!

we tell him about the squelching tiles and he says that he will bring us a dehumidifier after he turns off the water and deals with the mess of the fridge above us. we say ok great! this is wonderful!

and he goes to leave the apartment. out of habit i had locked the door when he entered. he goes "aw man did you lock me in?"

and i say

"oh sorry!"

and he pauses.

and he looks at our door in disbelief. perhaps even utter horror.

and this, my lovely audience, is what he was looking at:

surprisingly. he was not staring at the entertainment for man and horse plaque that katya and i found while thrifting. nay. he was staring at the unfortunate combination of the printed photo of lando norris and max verstappens face.

now why are lando norris and ax verstappen on the back of my door? you might be asking. you might even be asking who they are.

and if youve been following the lore of this blog, you might recognize them as formula 1 drivers. lando norris of course being a mclaren driver and max verstappen being the reigning world champion of team red bull.

and how did they wind up on my door? well at christmas katya thought it would be funny to put a picture of lando norris on top of our christmas tree and so we got one printed at cvs but when you get wallet sized photos printed they print you four of them so we ended up with four of the same photo of lando. one went on the tree, one went to my sister, one is in our bathroom and now one is on the back of our door.

as for max. well. katyas partner drinks red bull and he was on the red bull box so we cut him out and stuck him there. neither of us are particularly big max fans, it was just funny.

but anyway. i digress.

james is standing there staring at this array of perplexing stuff and goes.

"really? him??"

and i go

"yeah..." not knowing what else to say.

and james turns. and he looks at us. and he goes. and i shit you the absolute fuck not.

"now what's wrong with lewis hamilton???"

(sir lewis hamilton being the mercedes f1 driver, 7 time world champion and absolute icon)

and katya and i go

"oh no no! we love lewis hamilton! we just respect him too much to put him on the door!"

which is true

and james goes "now what did you think of him going to ferrari?"

and i say "i thought it was an interesting choice"

and katya says "i was surprised."

and james says "you and me both" and then he shuts the door behind him.

katya and i look at eachother. and we both fall to the floor in fits of laughter.

let it be known that james has come face to face with a giant tapestry of mr worldwide mr 305 pitbull himself that is in our bathroom, on several occasions, and yet, he chooses to comment on our choice of formula 1 driver that is taped to the back of our door.

im still in a state of disbelief. my ceiling is still pissing. my floor is still squelching. and my maintenance man felt the need to call our my choice of formula 1 driver at 9:30 on a saturday morning.

Hello Ladies,

I’ve found the cheat code when it comes to hypergamy! You’ll only need a little start capital…not that much, only around 1-2k.

You need to rebuild your entire wardrobe. Yes. Throw out your crop tops and your leggings. No high value man wants a woman that is dressed like a yoga teacher all day. I don’t care if you’re only 21. Buy all those long skirts and button up tops and don’t even think about purchasing a bag cheaper than 500 dollars.

Think about what you can do in terms of your appearance. Maybe a nose job or a skinny BBL? If you’re lucky you can get away with only lip fillers.

Only speak about feminine stuff. Home decor. How you’re planning to homeschool your children. Let the man talk about masculine things like politics or finances.

Are you still reading? Well…I have a surprise for you…

…there is no such thing as a cheatcode.

Sorry, but I need to rant a little bit.

I’m so fucking annoyed at posts like this. There is currently and likely never will be a cheatcode for hypergamy.

Don’t believe those feminity influencers – most of them aren’t even married or have bagged a billionaire. Don’t buy books from these people and don’t give them money for strange online classes, that claim you’ll meet a billionaire within a five step program.

The truth is, wether you like it or not, that only very few woman will marry into high society and even fewer will stay in those circles.

I don’t know if you get it but those men are only human and want a honest connection with their partner. (Well, I’m sure there are men that really only care about looks but is this really a man you would like to marry? Even if he’s the richest man on the planet?)

Hypergamy is work. Hard fucking work.

Many of you seem to think that those men only fuck you and look at you. What do you do if you can’t fuck because you’re on a gala or his mothers birthday dinner? You’ll have to open your mouth and start talking.

I’m like 98% sure that you could be a grenade in bed and the most beautiful woman that ever walked on earth, if you can’t hold a conversation for longer than a minute, you won’t be succesful.

I am not that beautiful myself, I’m average with a few nice features but I can entertain my boyfriend for hours just talking about my day. I can discuss current politics with him and talk about his business without googling every second phrase.

He loves to spend time with me because he likes how I make him feel. I make him feel welcomed in his home, I make sure to listen to his problems and about what brings him joy. I am the first person he wants to call when he has a hard or a very succesful day because he know that my reactions are always honest and genuine. I won’t just tell him what he wants to hear – I tell him my opinion.

Another thing that bugs me, is that those feminity influencers make relationships seem like the only things to do are shopping, taking vacations and going out to eat.

Honestly it’s fucking hard to be with a high value man.

High value man = very full schedule.

My boyfriend works from 5:30am to 7pm and sometimes even longer. When he comes home he wants to shower, eat something and talk to me.

I prepare his meals and clean the house while he’s at work. I do grocerie shopping and laundry, I iron his clothes and order his skin and haircare products.

He doesn’t expect me in a full face of makeup and a bodycon dress with heels when he gets home but he wants me to be clean and freshly showered. He want’s no drama and he expects that I know my place – beside him.

A relationship is work, especially if you’re in one with a man that works 80+ hours a week. Don’t expect endless shopping trips with him or a nice dinner every day. There is a reason why he has money – he works for it and his working hours are usually very long.

Happy New Year to anyone who follows me on Tumblr! I'm an Australian who lives in Sydney, and LOVES all things Michael Sheen. It's 1:30am 1/1/2024, and I'm not particularly keen on crowds and loud noises so that's why you'll find me typing up this blog instead of celebrating 2024 I confess that if you follow blogs like @ingravinoveritas or @problematicwelshman, I am the Aussie Anon who happened to see Michael Sheen everyday for an entire month at my work. I would share my observations on MS while he was in Sydney to rehearse and perform Amadeus. I also have a selfie to prove it:

Yes I am under the emoji. I also saw Amadeus 3 times. My last time Anna Lundberg was sitting right behind me, where my friend was game enough to speak to her where I didn't. ANYWAY what brings me here, right now, in this instant on New Years is due to a pretty petty and possibly inane thing that Anna repeatedly did while she was in Sydney, and something she posted just now. She uses the New Zealand flag when referring to anything related to her, and her family's time in Australia. New Years last year:

Look, I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of backlash for this, people saying who cares!? However Anna, as someone who is in a relationship with Michael Sheen who is a fierce and proud Welshman, and is the mother of 2 of his children. She should be delicate about using the CORRECT flag that represents a country. ESPECIALLY when in the same breath she mentions an Australian icon which is the Sydney Opera House. The SOH has been the home of Australian Art, Innovation and in a massive way Indigenous Representation (albeit the SOH was designed by a Dutch person) I don't see any excuse for using the wrong flag when referring to Australia. Especially in a world when we're learning more about expression of identity. I don't care if she has baby brain, or thought that New Zealand and Australia were one and the same because they're "Down Under". Or she thinks the flags look the same (they really don't) Or she has no time! It's no excuse to not Educate yourself! Ask questions! Yes we make mistakes but when you're representing yourself and your famous partner, you ought to take care! Yes you're human, and you have emotions, fallacies, but c'mon! You're letting yourself down!

I don't respect the Australian past of colonialism, and I wouldn't expect New Zealand to respect the same. But this flag represents us today as separate nations. Also in no way was Amadeus a duel nation production. I know the producer that's why I was able to see the show 3 times. I am losing so much respect for Anna Lundberg and I try sometimes to give her the benefit of the doubt, because let's be honest she ain't in a loving relationship save for her children, and I think Michael respects her as a friend, and mother, so it can't be easy. But it really begs me to question, how long can he tolerate the lack of self awareness? Lack of awareness in anything but beyond her bubble!? If any one responds to this please be diplomatic and tactful.

tue … wednesday,

gif warning on this one!

i was gonna post this last night but apparently i am now the type of person who gets extreme digestive distress from indian food :-( so i was too distracted by my agonies. much better today, and i feel like i had a worse reaction a few weeks ago from indian food, so maybe it's something that will get better with time like everything else ...

listening: so my brother spontaneously bought us tickets to see st vincent in [redacted] while we're on vacation...i haven't listened to her in ages but i was like sure why not...her new album dropped on the 26th and it's SO good. i'm kinda obsessed and very excited to see her live now. it's a good album. listen to it.

listened/watched the wtyp on five over ones, and started the more recent one on the camp fire.

reading: continuing 'how to read poetry like a professor'. yum. poetry.

watching: once again, dunmeshi (my boyf keeps asking "when is best girl showing up" (izutsumi) and i finally was able to be like "i think next episode"), more asobi asobase. insane show. the voice actors are masters of their craft, truly. good lord.

playing: fallow.

making: some stuff came out of the kiln that i actually like! the cave painting mugs!!! i made One fatal error - i put a 'satin' topper over the outside assuming it would be matte. it. kinda isn't? kinda is? made these weird "jizzy" (instructor's words, not mine, lol) streaks. thankfully it isn't too noticeable and they came out really good otherwise. the hardest part has been photographing them, the designs go all the way around and choosing a favorite is so hard...i made a gif to try and capture it all lol, and i really love the little handprints on the handles. these will go in their own post in the next few days so i can tag the inspiring artist :)

i also threw some new ones to make more! i do think in the future i will be handbuilding them though. i just really don't like throwing red clay for some reason. maybe i just need to practice more i dunno. i've since trimmed and put handles on these but i forgor to take a photo.

citrus juicer! it works!! it came out a little more Orange than i anticipated, the only downsides are manually scooping out the seeds, and also that it can kinda only handle one fruit at a time, but man, whatever, it's so cute.

mug/teacup that i tried a new underglaze technique on, where i put the flowers on the greenware and then use liquid latex to cover them to just slather the thing in the bg color: works well, i did this for the mug from last week too! my mistake with this one was putting that same jizzy satin overglaze on the flowers and it made them weird and blurry. it's cute otherwise though.

some stuff going in the kiln for bisque: fun texture bowl and a little trinket dish that i underglazed some cherry blossom trees on, inspired by something a friend in class did!

in terms of new things, today is actually the last day of class for me til i get back in july, so i will be trimming a pot and plate that i made last week but will otherwise just work on things i already have! the goal is just to leave things in a place where no extra clay work needs to be done; things can be left as greenware til i get back.

i also made some little watercolor palettes! for some reason the last one i made i didn't carve out material, i just sort of pressed in, and this made the whole thing a little wonky, so i'm hoping these will lay flat because i carved material out

eating: nothing of crazy note. made deb smittenkitchen's soy glazed chicken again because it whips ass.

misc: wough...fucked up day......butter chicken for dinner knocked me for a major loop last night and i wasn't able to sleep til like 1:30am from the Agonies, woke up to feed the cats and then went right back to bed...didn't get up til noon...but now i feel loads better so i might try to do some light exercise this afternoon before pottery, otherwise sleeping tonight is gonna be a nightmare lol. the goal for the afternoon is to submit my last thing for classes (takehome exam, it's not bad i just have to finish it up, and then i officially finished my masters degree (!!!)) and then do a little more for my meeting tomorrow morning. this time next week my brother will be here with me, and that following weekend we drive home together, so everything is about to happen very fast! i'm not gonna be home for as long this summer, and won't just be rotting in my room the whole time, so hopefully things will go much more smoothly mental health wise. fingers crossed! things are looking up! :)

It had been a few days since your volunteering, you were in group chat with the rest of the volunteers, you clicked on Yoongi’s picture and added his number to your contacts. You have been seriously considering messaging him, but you don’t want to seem crazy, and if you do message him, what will you even say? Things are getting busy at work as the fiscal year is coming to an end, you decide it’s best not to say anything for now.

Ding

You heard your phone, but you were in an online meeting with your stakeholders from Japan, you couldn’t check your phone immediately.

Ding

You were curious who was sending you all these messages, nobody messaged you like this. The meeting had another 5 minutes, you thanked God that the Japanese were strict on time, meaning this meeting will actually end in 5 minutes.

Finally, you had the chance to check your phone.

You have been added to a group chat.

You saw that Sora had made a separate group chat from the main chat, with you, Yoongi, Yeonjun and herself.

Sora: So guys, I made this chat, maybe we can volunteer again as a team, there’s many opportunities posted on the main chat, let me know if anything interests anyone

‘Yeonjun Set the name of the group chat to Dream Team ☆’

Yoongi: Sure.

Yeonjun: How about we all volunteer at the Hope orphanage this coming Sunday?

Nobody had responded, Sunday was one of your free days.

You: Yes, sounds great, what time?

Yeonjun: Awesome, 11:30am

Yeonjun: Sora? Yoongi?

You could see double blue ticks on your message, Yoongi had read it, why wasn’t he replying, you were starting to feel a little anxious, hoping he would agree.

Sora: Yes, I’ll see you guys there!!! Sooo excited!!

You felt a little relaxed, your new friend Sora will be there at least, you reacted with a thumbs up on her message and put your phone down to focus on your work.

A few hours had passed, it was almost 6pm, you normally left work around 6:30pm, since you were feeling a little peckish you decided to leave a little earlier, to grab something to eat before you called it a day.

You opened the group chat, still no response from Yoongi. Just then as on cue:

Yoongi: I am busy in the morning, but I can join at 12:30pm.

A smile plastered your face as you were exiting your office building.

Finally it was D-day, you’ll get to see Yoongi today. You got dressed in mid-length pale pink pleated skirt, a white shirt, white trainers and a pale pink cardigan, it was a little chilly today. You did your hair and makeup, then messaged Sora that you are on your way.

When you arrived, Sora was already in the parking lot.

“_____! You’re here! Yeonjun is going to be little late, we’ll go first?”

You exchanged your greetings, it was nice to always see Sora being cheerful, you never really had friend like her, she was sweet, kind, and genuine. On the contrary, you were never genuine, you didn’t care about others in the past, you used to be self-centred hence having no friendships for many years until you met Sora.

You were preparing a snacks table for the children; Sora was decorating the room with bunting and balloons.

“Do you like Yoongi?” she asked out of the blue.

You almost chocked on air, eyes wide, like a deer caught in headlights. Sora chuckled at your reaction, wiggling her eyebrows, expecting an answer.

“Umm, I do find him interesting, is it that obvious?” you tamely asked.

She laughed, “Of course not, I just had a feeling, I specifically made the group chat to bring you guys closer, you guys look so cute together, even Yeonjun thinks the same!”

You were flabbergasted and giddy at the same time, unable to contain your smile.

Sora patted your back and winked, “I’ll be your cupid, don’t you worry _____.”

It was now 12pm Yeonjun had just arrived and got to work, he kept the children entertained with his storytelling, as you and Sora made some final touches.

It was 12:20pm, you heard the door open and saw Yoongi walk in, instinctively you smiled and waved at him, he smiled back with a wink, making your heart skip a beat.

Yeonjun’s story had ended, the children were quietly sat in the library room, Yoongi asked them to follow his instruction, and surprisingly they were listening, he led them to the room where you and Sora had prepared the snacks and decorations. It was heart-warming to see them smile jumping around in excitement. They enjoyed the snacks as the 4 of you and the 2 caretakers helped to serve snack and drinks to them. After the children were done, some of them had made a little mess, Yoongi swiftly grabbed tissues and wet wipes, cleaning them, you joined in to help.

It was nice spending the afternoon with the children, you could see that multiple times Yeonjun and Sora purposely put you and Yoongi together to complete tasks, not that you minded, it was just so funny that being adults they were still pulling the high school tricks, nevertheless you were thankful as you got to learn more about Yoongi.

Yoongi liked oranges, his favourite perfume scent was bergamot, and he owned a chain of cafes under his family’s business ‘Min Corperation’, you were aware of the business but just never had the chance to work with them in the past.

Your week started off boring, it was 2pm, you decided to message Yoongi. It’s not weird to ask him out for a coffee, he does have a chain of cafes… you pull out your phone.

Hello Yoongi, would you be free…

No, it was too formal, you erased the text.

Hey Yoongi, would you be up for coffee sometime this week?

Your heart was beating a little faster and harder, you anxiously stared at your text, it seemed fine but why were your ears burning up, you reluctantly put down your phone, screen facing down. It’s not like Yoongi will reply straight away.

You tried to focus on your work, you had to win this contract you’ve been working on for weeks, you had to prove to your father that you were worthy of taking on his company, not your half-brother Kim Taehyung.

Taehyung your older half-brother, the golden child of your stepmother, of course he would be because he was her own blood and flesh. Whereas you were a side product of your father’s extramarital affair. Your stepmother made it clear from day one she disliked you; your father was absent for the most of your childhood, you had various nannies who took care of you over the years until you were capable of taking care of yourself. You had sworn to impress your father and outshine Kim Taehyung, the bane of your existence.

Buzz buzz.

You raised your head and looked at your phone, it was ringing, it was Yoongi!

You picked up “Hello?”

“Hey ____ how are you?”

“Good, you?”

“Good good, I was wondering instead of going out, would you like to help me out with something?”

Your heart at this point was racing, you’re sure he could hear it through the phone.

“You still there?” Yoongi asked, showing a hint of concern.

“Yes, I’m here, sorry, help you with what?”

“I have new coffee roast blends, they just arrived today, I need to pick out the best one, for our winter toffee lattes, help me decide the which one to sell?”

“Of course, I’d love to!” you exclaimed, you internally slapped yourself, you sounded like you were five.

Yoongi chuckled, “Great I’ll text you my address be there for 7 yeah?”

“Yup see ya at 7” you quickly hung up and grabbed your water bottle.

Woah that was more difficult than trying to negotiate with your clients. It was 4:30pm, you decided to leave at 5pm, get dressed and leave your apartment by 6, to be at Yoongi’s place by 7pm.

Your door flew open, and walked in Kim Taehyung, why did he have to be here to ruin your mood.

“Dad want’s analysis done on the future potential partnerships, do it by the end of tonight.”

He threw the file of papers on your desk.

“No.”

Taehyung turned back to look at you with disgust.

“What do you mean, no? How dare you, you filthy little b-”

“Taehyung, I said no, I can’t do this plus it’s your side of the business” you cut him off.

He walked over to you, placing both his hand on your desk and lowering himself to your sitting level.

“Okay, I was going to tell you a little secret after you did this as a reward, so you wouldn’t be too shocked my dear little sister.” He looked soullessly into your eyes.

You were starting to feel anxious and fidgety, Taehyung never had good news.

“Fine I’ll do for Friday if you tell me what secret” you bargained.

“No-uh has to be done tonight.”

“Tae I really can’t do it for tonight”.

“It’s Taehyung for you, not just Tae, and fine, do it by tomorrow afternoon.”

“Fine. Tell me the secret first!”

“Work first”

“I will do it, I promise, can’t you just let me know?”

He was enjoying this a lot; you could see how he was trying to hide his smirk.

“Dad is getting you married to his best friend and business partners one and only son, Park Jimin.”

You were too shocked to even respond, how could your father do this to you, he knew what sort of a person Jimin was, everyone did.

“Bye sister!” Taehyung yelled as he slammed your door shut.

It was almost 5, Yoongi, that’s right, you had to leave to meet Yoongi on time, you can worry about Jimin later, for all you know this could be one of Taehyung’s sick pranks.

i've said for months now that i want to write the ofmd beat sheet of season 1 and where i think season 2 could go, and @ourflagmeansgayrights had asked me to tag them in it in ye olde yesteryear, and i am finally doing it bc i just finished revising a romcom w my lit agent so it's all fresh in the brain (please note i have been going to bed bw 1:30am - 2am for the past week bc of that deadline so if i start rambling no i'm not)

this post will be long, so it's going under a cut. for this writeup, i will only focus on Ed and Stede, not the other characters with their own plot with their own beats. if you want to read the book i'm taking these beats from (and i highly recommend it if you're someone who likes to write or wants to start writing romance novels! of any subgenre! but it'd probably work for longer fics, too, or even shorter fics if one of them applies to a certain beat or follows certain beats), it's Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes.

going in, do remember that this is not a hard and fast rule. depending on the writer, variations of this can crop up in fiction, and do, often with success. but for the purpose of this post, we'll stick with the preestablished beats.

Beat #1: Introducing H1 and H2, aka introducing your two main characters. in the case of ofmd, this is Ed and Stede. Stede's introduction, as we all know, is him appearing on the stairs of the Revenge narrating to Lucius about how he runs the ship. episode 1 is, in essence, the entirety of Introducing H1, bc it's spent on Stede first and foremost. one might think that episode 2, when Black Pete starts telling the audience via the crew about Blackbeard, is Introducing H2, even though he isn't physically on the screen yet and what we hear of him isn't actually true (he doesn't have embers for eyes etc). and while it is and it isn't, i think a better example of this introduction beat is in episode 3 when we-the-audience finally get to meet Ed onscreen, as he orders Izzy around and blows smoke rings.

Beat #2: Meet Cute, aka what it says on the tin. obviously this is the end of episode 3, when Stede is stabbed by the Spaniards and Ed saunters on with all his pomp and circumstance to rescue him. meet-cute for the ages, that.

Beat #3: No Way #1, aka when our character expresses in some way why they don't want to fall in love--at all or with a particular person--and sets up the romance arc. for Stede, we the audience know he's married and doesn't actually think he can be/know he is gay (depending on your interpretation--i'm not here to say which it is), so we can interpret that as contributing to his No Way #1.

Beat #4: Adhesion, aka what keeps them in proximity of one another. this beat encompasses much of episode 4, when Stede and Ed have to work together to find a way to deal with the Spaniards hunting them, and also what follows afterward that morning in the crow's nest, when Stede and Ed agree to spend time together: Stede to teach Ed how to be a Proper Gentleman and Ed to teach Stede how to be a pirate.

Beat #5: No Way #2, aka Beat #3 but for the other protagonist. now, sometimes that's not always the case, since Beat #3 can also introduce the No Way for both protagonists, which would thus leave Beat #5 as simply a time in which we dig deeper into why a character or characters doesn't want to fall in love or doesn't want to fall in love with one specific person. but in the case of ofmd, Beat #5 is for Ed introducing his No Way. at the end of episode 4, Ed expresses to Izzy that he intends to kill Stede and take his place as a Proper Gentleman (whether or not he actually means to follow through on this or had planned this from the beginning are another couple things up for debate depending on your interpretation, which again i am not here to touch on). therefore, he has no intention of falling in love at all, but with Stede in particular.

Beat #6: The Inkling, aka when we start to have fun. in a typical beat sheet, rather than one specifically for a romance, this would be the start of the Fun and Games beat, where we go along with the characters on the start of their plot/journey. for a romance, this is when the two characters start to Feel Things, even if they can't identify those things or aren't fully aware of them. this encompasses episode 5 and stretches into episode 6, in which we see Ed and Stede spending more time together while they teach one another about being a gentleman and/or about being a pirate. we see Ed and Stede hanging out chatting; we see them telling stories with the crew; we see them dressing one another in finery; we see them sword-fighting. Stede doesn't want to go to the fancy fuck party, but he goes bc Ed wants to. Ed has a rough time of it there, which leads to Stede being The Gentleman Pirate. all of these scenes are meant to allow them to grow closer/feel attraction to one another (whether or not they're aware of it) as they learn more about one another and spend time together realizing they get along really well and might not actually hate it. this beat ends with Ed being forced to attempt to carry out his plan to kill Stede by Izzy, except he can't do it. bc Ed is more self-aware than Stede and/or bc he isn't unaware of his being gay, he can see how this has changed things for him, even if he's not sure he's ready to welcome that.

Beat #7: Deepening Desire, aka when those realized feelings in Beat #6 begin to come to a head. fittingly, this beat begins in episode 7, when Stede and Ed go treasure hunting not bc Ed wants to but because Stede does and Ed is unable to say no to Stede's puppy eyes (or his very sassy "we're having a day!" and flip of his coattails). again, i'm not sure that Stede is aware of his feelings for Ed yet (perhaps his attraction to Ed, but that's another thing that's up for debate) but Ed is certainly aware of his own growing feelings for Stede, even if he doesn't think anything will come of them...until Lucius gets involved, giving Ed the kick in the pants he needs to recognize that, while Stede might be oblivious to his feelings and unable to name them, he's still very much Feeling Things. just look at the way Ed encourages Stede to use his map, even though it's burned. just look at the way Ed looks at Stede when Stede is looking at the map and decides to set off in A Direction. Lucius knows Ed is aware of his feelings for Stede, hence the teasing, and Ed isn't denying them, even if he has no intention on acting on them. at least until, of course, he suggests in unison with Stede the idea of becoming co-captains. with regard to Stede's Beat #7, i think it goes into episode 8. he might not recognize what he feels for Ed yet, but he absolutely recognizes he's jealous of Ed and Jack's relationship (even if he expresses it in a way Ed might find difficult to understand), and learns that "anything goes at sea." Stede might not have been fully aware of his being gay, but he's certainly aware of the concept of homosexuality (how can he not be with the crew he has?). thus, he understands what Jack implies, and afterward, when Ed has left him, this comes to a head with how he watches the beach all night (poor Olu, patience of a saint and heart of gold).

Beat #8: Maybe This Time, aka when they think Maybe, Just Maybe, it wouldn't be the worst idea to maybe sort of give into all those thoughts and feelings. after all, at the beginning of episode 9, Ed just sacrificed himself to the British for Stede, returning to the Revenge to be with him no matter what Badminton has in store. Ed just threw himself between Stede and a firing squad. they both just signed the Act of Grace, damning themselves to ten years of serving the British Empire that Stede chafes under and Ed has spent his life fighting against/fleeing from. but they're doing it together! maybe it'll be okay! maybe! this! time!

Beat #9: Midpoint of Love, aka when Things Happen bc we're now at the halfway point of this story. Stede and Ed are together at the privateering academy, Ed wants to be Just Ed bc the time he has spent with Stede has been the most fun he's had in ages, maybe ever. they kiss! they actually kiss! they start making plans to run away to China together! Ed is happy! Stede is too, but...

Beat #10: Inkling of Doubt, aka when highs start to fade even as attachment (whether on the page--the two characters are dating, or sleeping together, or holding hands, whatever the story demands--or more vaguely, such as the two characters being aware of their feelings and how they're reciprocated but are unsure if they can actually get away from their No Way beats). Stede might be riding high on the thrill of being kissed by Ed, but that doesn't mean his worries have gone away, as evidenced by his continued almost dissociation throughout episode 9. thus, when Badminton finds him and confirms all his fears (that he's ruined Blackbeard, the greatest pirate of all time) (that he's abandoned Mary and his children) (whether or not Badminton actually showed up or was a hallucination like Stede experienced in episode 2 is another thing up for debate depending on your interpretation), he decides to run away and abandon Ed to return to his wife and children, thus harkening all the way back to his No Way beat (#3 up there).

Beat #11: Deepening Doubt, aka when things get progressively...bad. in this case, Ed knows now that Stede isn't meeting him. he starts to wonder if he misread everything, despite the kiss, bc he doesn't know what really happened to Stede--only that he never actually showed up. he returns to the Revenge and hunkers out in the blanket fort, all his fears getting worse, confronting his own No Way beat of whether or not he should have fallen for Stede.

Beat 12: Retreat! Retreat! aka when things start to go from bad to worse. Ed starts trying to move on from Stede, in the best way he can, after talking to Lucius about life just beginning again no matter how much we might hurt. for Stede, this is when he tries to force himself back into the mold of the man he left behind--the man he never was--by playacting as that hoity toity asshole society demands he be. look at how he talks to Doug, and how he forces himself back into Mary's life, no matter how miserable he is (and others are as a result--Mary in particular). he thinks he can't have that life at sea bc he has responsibilities w Mary and his children that he can't escape from.

Beat 13: Shields Up, aka when the characters are at their lowest for varying reasons. Ed knows that, if he wants to survive Izzy, he can't be Ed. he has to be Blackbeard, he has to be the Kraken. he also tells himself he was wrong about Stede, full stop. this leads to him tossing all of Stede's fine things overboard, marooning the crew while forcing Jim and Frenchie to remain onboard, and going full Kraken Mode--or so we wants people to believe. we see him at his other lowest, sobbing alone in the empty captain's cabin, looking at the painting of the lighthouse. Stede, of course, ends on a high (his arc was a bit fast-tracked toward Beat #16 down below, but not fully).

now, it's possible that Beats 11, 12, and 13 might show up in the beginning of season 2 in some way/shape/form. we might not be done exploring those beats and all they encompass, for either character, simply bc there wasn't as much time spent on them at the end of episode 9/in episode 10. but these are the upcoming beats we can might see explored throughout season 2, since we know that David Jenkins is following a romance arc for this series. and one thing to remember, as i mentioned above, is that this is not a hard and fast rule. beats can be played around with, overlap for different characters, have hiccups or brief reruns.

Beat #14: Break Up, aka what it says on the tin. some might wonder if this beat happens in the above Beat #13 scenarios i've written out, and while that may very well be possible, it would mean that Beats 10 - 13 were fast-tracked in a matter of two episodes. remember, season 2 wasn't greenlit by the time season 1 aired but months later, so David Jenkins might have wanted to play around with the structure so we're not completely left on the same low that Ed is. we know that Stede is coming back for him, even if Ed doesn't yet. thus, we might very well get a Beat #14 in season 2. Ed and Stede might reunite, Stede believing he and Ed can simply go back to what they used to be, only for him to be confronted with just how badly he hurt Ed. from the theories going around, they're bound to meet up at least a couple times before they're spending consistent time together again.

Beat #15: Dark Night of the Soul, aka the lowest of the low points at the worst of the worst points in a character's journey. for Stede, this might be him believing that he'll never be able to win Ed back. for Ed, this might be him going Full Kraken, as we see in many of the stills and teasers (him threatening Frenchie, him objecting to weddings, him adopting what the legend of Blackbeard says he looks like with the nine guns on his chest).

Beat #16: Wake Up! Smell the Coffee! aka when the sun finally rises. for Stede, this might be when he finally figures out a way to win Ed back and, perhaps, gets an inkling that Ed might actually be open to it. for Ed, this might be him realizing he's actually willing to try again with Stede, trusting that Stede won't hurt him.

Beat #17: Grand Gesture, aka what it says on the tin. if i say "picture the grand gesture in a romcom," you might picture a character running through an airport to get to their love interest before they board a plane forever. you might picture a character running through the rain to find another character bc when you love someone, you want the rest of your life to begin right now. (yeah i'm referencing when harry met sally sue me) on a show like ofmd, with a character like Stede, i think we can anticipate a very, very big grand gesture. i've written so many of them myself in so many ways (one of which even kinda aligns with that theory i saw floating around with Ed climbing up out of the surf and finding himself on an island with Stede and the crew) as have so many other brilliant writers, so i think it can go in any way we might have predicted and perhaps even some we haven't yet dreamed up.

Beat #18: Whole-Hearted, aka when we see the two characters in their New Happy, living together in love. now, i can see this going one of two ways: either season 2 ends with this Whole-Hearted beat only for season 3 to throw in some new kind of obstacle(s) that forces a revisitation of any of the above or perhaps new beats entirely, or season 2 doesn't make it to the Whole-Hearted beat and we thus have to wait for it (and perhaps Beats 16 and 17) for season 3. we know that David Jenkins sees this story as requiring three seasons to tell it fully from start to finish, which is why i think that we'll be revisiting some of the later beats from season 1 in season 2 and only get through a couple (perhaps Beats 14, 15, and 16) in season 2 before the season ends. season 2 has only eight episodes, versus season 1's ten. this could be bc of HBO fuckery, but it could also be bc David Jenkins has plans to explore some of the later beats in season 3, with season 2 just focusing on, perhaps, Beats 12 - 15.

of course, there's no way we can know until we see season 2. i'll definitely revisit this as the season progresses, since these are all just predictions based on my knowledge of writing and editing romcoms and romance novels. and others might have different takes on what happens for each beat in season 1 and season 2, bc again, everything is based on your own interpretation of preestablished rules and where you think a certain character might be mentally and emotionally. no one person is right about where each scene, moment, or character beat falls (apart from the show's writers, obviously, given they're the ones creating this).

but this is to give people some reassurance going into season 2, since i've seen so many people worried that the show is gonna go darkdarkdark, like Black Sails darkdarkdark. i understand your worry, given how often queer shows have screwed queer viewers over (i've been there!!! when i first started watching ofmd last year, i was right there, thinking we might not actually get an actual queer story like we've all been hoping for). but i also want to say that, as a writer myself, as an editor of romance, i'm not in the least bit worried that we won't eventually have our happy ending. David Jenkins isn't the kind of person to jerk our chain. he's here to tell a love story. he's not going to kill them at the end.

if you read this far, congrats! i rambled! there are probably a fuckton of typos! i will return to edit this eventually, but it's almost 11pm my time and my brain is fried. but my inbox is always open if you want to talk about anything above. just don't come into it with bad faith takes, willful misunderstanding, or whatever bullshit might pop into certain fans' minds. i'm really not here for it. i love this show, i love these characters, and i have full faith we'll be okay in the end. 💖

Of course!!!

Just today:

I learned that the Golf Country (wicked factory off road version of the Mk2 Golf) was lifted over 4 inches for a total of around 7 inches of ground clearance!

I learned the absolutely mental Cobalt SS was essentially a parts bin special -they had a powerful 4 cylinder from the Saturn Ion Red Line and figured they'd put it in the less weird Cobalt and people would care, which they did- and that its epoch-making 260hp powertrain was only a later upgrade -again, borrowed from another car, the Pontiac Solstice GXP- once the original engine no longer met emission requirements. And that it had a sedan version!!!

And, while writing this post, I looked for details on how this lapped the King-Daddy, longest and most gruelling monster of all circuits that is the Nürburgring faster than the all-wheel-drive six-figure Japanese demigod that is the Skyline GT-R, and found out about the popular misconception that this refers to the R34 Nissan Skyline (right), to date the most coveted and sought after, whereas it actually refers to the R32 (left), a prior version -though not much less groundbreaking in its own time- and that the nonetheless staggering feat may largely be attributable to tire formulations having vastly improved between 1990 and 2008.

I learned of the Ford Transit Sportvan, a confusingly diesel sporty? version of the Ford Transit!

Hell, I learned about a small 20s brand I didn't even know existed!

I find out new things about cars every week, and that's not every day just because most days I run out of time to read and listen and browse all the car-related content I would want to (hence me writing this at 2:30AM, cough cough). Every model has an intricate story usually originating years before its birth, thousands of parts, usually dozens of variations year over year, mountains of media created around it and thousands of examples that have gone around to be featured in movies, owned by celebrities, and participate in history in other thousands of minuscule little ways. Multiply this for thousands of models worldwide and then multiply that for a century and a half. However narrow your area of interest, if you think you know as much as most of the car trivia within it you are absolutely a fool.

Oh wait you were probably asking for an actually fun fact.

Oops.

Well, still today, I learned that our dear Saturn Vue, remember our dear Saturn Vue? Well, not @makenoplans's, the second generation, it turns out that 1. at fucking least it drove well and 2. it died along with Saturn itself when GM went bankrupt and a clause stipulated for the government bailout was to kill three of its brands - Saturn being one of their least successful at the time I WONDER FUCKING WHY I WONDER IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ONE COULD HAVE DONE TO SAVE IT LIKE NOT EVISCERATING ALL LIFE OUT OF IT AND TURN ITS CORPSE INTO AN AMERICAN DISTRIBUTOR FOR A MEDIOCRE GERMAN CAR BRAND i am calm i am calm i am digressing. Well they'd relatively speaking just started making the second gen Vue in Mexico and they were like aw cmon do we really have to stop selling it so soon? And so they just fucking. Used the "Chevrolet Captiva Sport" branding it was sold with in South America to sell it to rental companies. It's basically like a fake ID but it's no faker than the one you started off with.

Oh! And a bit less recently I found out that bafflingly you could get the first generation Honda Civic with three different trunk doors - seen here in increasing order of price and sense.

Even more thoughts, even more feelings.

Yet another long post ! it’s 1:30am, bear with me once again !

SAM’S IMMEDIATE HUG ONCE HE’S OUT, WITH DAVID RIGHT THERE NEXT TO THEM. I’m imagine Darlin’ is absolutely devastated.

Sam IMMEDIATELY wanting to get Darlin’ home. Away from any and all of this. David asking for a hug, and getting it, hugging them DEEPLY. Reassuring them. Apologizing. Promising that they’ll be okay, that he has their back. That he’ll keep in touch.

Sam asking how he can help the second they get home. I can imagine that they can barely look him in the eye, if at all. I’m crying at the fact that Sam makes sure they know that they have Complete agency in what they need, that they don’t have to do Anything they don’t want to.

David was by their side the whole time behind the glass. I’m glad his presence helped them get through it. I bet he’s just as heartbroken about it.

Poor Darlin’. White-hot fury’s burning coals settling in their soul, left with remnants of shock and shame and guilt. :(((

Darlin’ asking if he’s okay too, even if Sam doesn’t think he deserves to be asked that. Which he absolutely does.

I’m glad Sam acknowledges why he was asked to be in the room with Quinn and not them. I’M SO GLAD he reassures Darlin’ that no matter what games Quinn played to try to drive a wedge between them, no matter what stories or secrets he could reveal. Nothing changes between them, if anything it only makes them both stronger. Their love deeper.

“...and how I feel about you is that you are my ABSOLUTE Priority. Always.” Yeah i’m SOBBING.

SAM SAYING HE’S SO PROUD OF THEM. HOW THEY FOUGHT FOR THEMSELF TO GET OUT, FOR THEIR FRIEND, FOR THE JUSTICE THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. They are not Lesser for the things that happened to them, and they are So incredibly Brave.
