The Salvation Day Interviews (2 of 2) with musician Anthony Tadlock

Dear listener, this is part 2 of 2 of my Salvation Day Interviews with Anthony Tadlock, A.K.A. t-underneaththeradardancing on Tumblr. For reference, Part 1 is here. Without further ado let’s start picking T’s oddly poetic and musical brain once again...

Mr Tadlock, SD’s style of music seems quite distinct and doesn’t sound exactly like any other band I’ve heard of. When you two record music, what is the specific style you’re aiming for? Do you and Ms Vita Rhie Quintanilla align on any favorite influences that heavily sway your sound? Do you two enjoy the same type of music outside of SD? How much does classical or modern music affect your own expression as musicians?

whether we are recording - playing live - just fucking around (what passes for "practice/rehearsal ") we dont actually aim for a style - early on we talked in general about "goals" we agreed that what we aim for is transcendent magic healing - and we will settle for being in tune and not sucking - influences many and varied but both agree if on a desert island - and could only have one album it would b miles davis "kind of blue" - we both enjoy a wide range of music...

everything we hear - have heard - from classical to punk rock influences us - we also play a fair amount of "covers" live - a typical example would be "i know places" which is a kind of dirge by lykke li - vita had never heard it before - it was a staple in my live performances at the time - vita listened to what i had done w it and it became a staple of early performances having morphed into almost a stax type r&b - like many songs we play - we worked out the arrangement during performances with little or no discussion about arrangement

I find that some of the most effective musical groups out there are duos. There’s just something that seems more concentrated and concise about a duo’s ability to wrap an album in a tight bow. Compared to other musical projects you’ve worked on in the past, do you prefer dealing with one single other creative mind… or many others… and what are the disadvantages of both from your point of view? When you’re playing guitar and she’s singing, for example, how do you deal with the inevitable issue of adding percussion to ‘enhance’ a track or live performance?

at this time there are actually 3 members of SD - the 3rd is london - he plays guitar and bass - is engineering / producing our next project - at various times we have had a 3rd musician join us for a song or 2 - and there is maggie umber the artist, who created our web site - a video and some behind the scenes stuff - which is not precisely answering the question - i understand about duos though - with 2 minds/ souls it is easier to keep the connection - the unspoken - and be as 1 - with the whole being more than the sum of - it was only in making the album and making hard choices / dealing with forced choices and realities that i realized my true role / gift as a guitarist/musician is being a catalyst for magic to happen - to digress - often at open mics - peeps play along from their seats - impromptu collabs occur - sometimes the whole place becomes the stage - today im gonna prob play 1 song w the host/emcee - we have played 2x together - 1st time was cuz someone who had someone die that they were close to requested she play hendrix purple haze and she asked me if i could - tho i have heard the song countless times - the last time i played parts of it - i was maybe 15 - but it’s a simple structure - i said give me a minnit - went outside tried out chords as i remembered and something resembling the guitar parts - spent maybe 5 minutes total - came back in and said yah sure but u have to sing - no rehearsal - loose and nothing like note for note - ffs i dont play anything note for note or exactly the same way twice –

anyway - it’s like that w vita - she often asks - can we play xxx - i say sure - look up chords if i dont know and ...w vita it has been consistent magic from the start and while not effortless by any stretch - we both put everything we have into the music as we play - whether we are loosely playing in my dining room / her living room - out in the street - onstage - sometimes we think there is no audience and a neighbor will later say they liked it - or look up on the street and realize we have attracted a small audience - in terms of the limitations - especially when vita isnt playing guitar - partially i am accustomed to playing solo just me and guitar - have developed different strategies for compensating / filling holes in the sound - that said we have wanted a percussionist from day 1 - on the album and ep we used synthesized drums / percussion which can be hard cuz we are a bit quirky - so in some ways salvation day will always be vita and t at the core - tho our 1 performance w london was ez and in some ways our best - and playing w him is ez and natural - unfortunately no recording

I have but one final query and it’s a general one, so buckle your fuckles. I’m curious Mr Tadlock, what do you think of the state of modern music? When I listen to Salvation Day, I hear a group that is 100% genuine. You’ve got an interesting story and your entire act and delivery is sincere… when I turn on modern radio I just hear utter nonsense. Nonsense that is often dumbed down by multimillion dollar corporations that are trying to turn the talents of others into a saleable product. Do you think the vast majority of modern music is even healthy for people, and is there a conscientious effort on your behalf to keep the presentation pure with Salvation Day?

the state of modern music ? idk tbh - it’s a scattered and confusing landscape - like always - much of wat is out there is crap - but then again - i lissen to 60s station on sirius when on road trips w the unpoet and much of what i hear is pretty crappy and i love the 60s lol - same same modern music which i get sporadic exposure to via tumblr instagram and youtube - hearing while in cafes or in ride shares - SNL ... and every once in a while an absolute gem is heard so is "mainstream " pop /commercial music "healthy" - fuck if i know - i remember 1st listening to top 40 am radio in 1st grade - loved the chipmonks (Alviiiiiiin!) singing witch doctor - a one off "flying purple people eater " lots of "novelty records " when previously listened to moms opera and frank sinatra - beatles werent on the radar yet but beach boys - mostly vacuous but fun - have gone thru phases - only listened to jazz and opera for almost a decade - have compulsively listened to 1 album or artist for periods - was any of it "healthy" maybe - it fomented trance and being outside myself - sometimes music is entertainment - sometimes just background for a lot of people - but also a way of coming together - a way to express confusing/conflicting emotions - i could critique modern music as being cookie cutter and meaningless - but no more than say doo wop dang a langa ding dong indeed or has there ever been anyone more transgressive than little richard then again chuck berry stooping to my dingaling ffs

so did we do we trynna keep it "pure" w salvation day - fuck yah - i mean how fucking audacious (pretentious) to call it Path of Sacred Art - i thot our producer understood and they did sorta but - and i love our album but at one point i almost walked away from it - the process slowly grinds - yah rough edges r smoothed but - a case in point - the epitome of early salvation day - the sacred art side was/is "reincarnation" something went terribly wrong in the studio - after spending waaaay too much time recording vita's guitar - and too much autotune on her vocal - her guitar track had a "glitch" making it unusable - by the time that was discovered vita was in davis again - covid was just about to go into the lock down phase ...it was expedient to hire a classic trained studio musician that the producer knew and could record studio quality on his laptop

and tbh i still am not sure how much of the electric on it is actually me or if some was replaced w same studio guitarist - little dramas like this went on for months during the mixing process and much of the email text exchanges w producer were late night sleep ruining drama - in the interest of ever getting the album finished - vita - whom i gave ultimate decision making since they are her songs - deeply personal - she has literally shed blood (read her book) during the writing of performing recording , allowed almost all of her guitar to b scrapped - replaced by same studio musician - tho to said musicians credit - she did a good job of re creating vita - and if some of my guitar - we only talking about a few notes - was also replaced - she faithfully re created - tho i did go in studio one day a couple weeks after recording was "finished" and laid down a lot of riffs / repeating lines / solos and i was sooooo stoned i truthfully dont remember - in those daze because of intense constant pain - i used what in retrospect were enormous amounts of thc and cbd - no other drugs or alcohol but i was high 24-7 and rarely got as much as 3 hours sleep a night - anyway - so yah we did our best to keep it pure - and there is nothing cookie cutter about the album

Today was warm and bright.

The Sun beamed brilliantly as you basked in its heat, breathing in the distinct scent of the air instead of the accustomed whiff of the chilly weather. Several eyes bore into your direction, and those within hearing range spoke in hushed tones to themselves, either completely ignorant of the fact or purposely doing so.

Call it a hunch or instinct, but you are always most certain you are the subject of their sneaky glances and hush whispers. Especially whenever you are accompanied by the villager's Elders, their gazes harden. As much as they try their best to hide it behind their fake innocent smiles— you knew they were telling gossip about you.

Rumors of this caliber quickly spread like wildfire around your close-knit community. In every community, there was always a person that spoke behind closed doors, and that person was… her.

(R/N) disliked you. She openly admitted it to a fellow villager behind your back whenever she thought you weren't listening. Perhaps, she even hated you for being favored by the Elders. Perhaps, she despises how you were exempt from the physical labors because of it. Therefore, she was the perfect person to get information on the ruckus earlier.

So, you wait…

Spending the rest of the afternoon in your hut, face buried in a book after cleaning the tiny space. The constant ticking of the clock on your wall mildly reminded you of how much time has passed. You remain seated in your lounge, waiting for the surroundings to darken like you've always had – this time to sneak out to gather intel instead of visiting your boyfriend.

You expertly stepped out of your hut without a sound, heading towards a specific location. The skies were littered with a veil of clouds, making it easier to creep up to your destination: the Leader's hut, where the adults have their meetings at midnight. The bushes gave you plenty of cover to stand near an open window as you listened in to (R/N) carelessly informing the Council about the severe problems caused by the God in the sea.

You knew of the God who resides in the sea. Colossal Emperor, as they call it. You've heard stories from the Elders of its large stature and how it can cause rainstorms every time it resurfaces above the sea. You found the tale intriguing, as terrifying as it might sound to a child and the other village folks. You'd always visit the beach where the said God surfaces, hoping to catch a glimpse when it does.

You shook your head, trying to focus on the task at hand. "There's only one way to stop these constant rainstorms, and I suggest we bring an offer." She proposed.

"We can't. We have limited cattle and crops." Countered by another.

"How about a human sacrifice?"

"That's inhumane! Everyone has a role in this village—"

"Besides one." Everyone fell silent, and you immediately knew who she was referring to. "She hasn't contributed to this village like the rest of us have. She served this village for no purposes besides entertaining the Elders."

What she said was the truth. Although, advantages were keeping the Elders company, such as being favored by them and being exempted from physical labor. They were not the ones in charge of this village's community. It was the Council and their Leader, Irihata Nobuteru.

"I agree with bringing an offering for the Colossal Emperor, but," Irihata started, "we mustn't stain our hands with murder." The rest of the Council agreed with the Leader's statement, and there was a slight pause before he broke it. "How about we vote on which approach we should proceed with?"

"Who votes for bringing an offering such as food, cattle, and so? Please raise your hands." Several hands raised their hands, but it was clear that the majority would vote for the next option. "Since the majority didn't raise their hands, is it safe to assume that everybody agreed to offer a living human?" Everyone nodded.

"Let us hope this sacrifice will suffice. We can't afford another rainstorm if this fails." With that, they ended the meeting right there and then.

The following morning came, and two women from the Council were in front of you. It was really quite a sight to behold, watching them squirm and stutter at your front door as they attempt to explain your circumstances that you already knew. The shame and guilt on their faces bring you slight solace for your own sake. You didn't dare interrupt them nor ask for an explanation— you were sure they'd give you pointed and disapproving looks.

The whole village knew you were orphaned, which is why you were close to the Elders, as they were the ones who raised you as their own. Additionally, they knew you didn't have any lover they knew of – making you the perfect sacrifice to offer for the Colossal Emperor.

"… when?" You simply ask, looking down at the ground as you clenched your hands into fists while trembling slightly. A mix of emotions swirled through you: sadness, confusion, frustration, hopelessness, and… rage.

"Tonight, at sunrise." You nodded sadly in understanding before closing the door with a soft thud as you slid down against the door with your hands on your face. You knew it would eventually come to this – it was in a human's nature, after all. To simply discard those who aren't helpful to them. You just didn't know; it would be this quick for them to throw you away.

You spend your morning reflecting on your time here at the village, reliving the memories you shared with the Elders. In the afternoon, you visit them and say your goodbyes after informing them of your fate. These people were the ones who became your parents and family, especially Granny Aoi. You decided to stay there, giving them one last memory before you ultimately disappear from the village and their lives.

Night came faster than you anticipated, and you quickly sneaked out of the Elder's hut when they least expected before walking towards the Leader's hut and knocking on his door. He opened the door, revealing his relatively short yet large build.

"Yes?"

"Just in case, can you promise me that you'll evacuate the Elders and children, taking them as far away as possible?" Your abrupt request seemed to have taken him by surprise. It was unexpected. "This is my only condition."

Irihata reluctantly agreed to your favor, and you left him be for the night. This interaction, however, gave him an unsettling feeling in his gut. It was… as if you knew something that he doesn't, and he can't seem to pinpoint it. Your words stay with him, haunting him until he finally gives in. Irihata woke the Elders and children, telling them to leave the village immediately and to hide in a large cave within the forest until further notice.

Meanwhile, you walked down the beach to visit your boyfriend. This was located underneath a cliff just a few miles away from the village. The Elders have always warned you to avoid that cliff as the Colossal Emperor is said to snatch unsuspecting people there whenever he resurfaces. Yet, he never appears whenever you are there.

But you did meet him there whom you've met purely by chance. It was at night during one of the rainstorms that the said God would cause, and yet, you didn't see a towering monster – what you saw was a man in the water, staring off at the cloudy skies above. You learned that his name was Matsukawa Issei. You're not exactly sure what drew you to him in the first place – he was mysterious and brooding from a distance. Still, with you, he was easy-going and always managed to make you laugh somehow.

A smile forms on your lips as you spot him leaning against the edge of the docks with his lower half submerged in water. "Is it finally the day, my dear?" He asks with a toothy grin when you reach him, and you give a grin of your own in return.

"Indeed, it is, my love."

The cold rain breeze made you shiver as you woke up, tied up on a wooden post that was promptly embedded into the ground. The rain trickled heavily, covering your surroundings in a thick mist. Despite this, you can still trace multiple silhouettes in front of you. Besides the crashing waves beneath you and the loud rain pouring, you could still make out a… prayer?

In your stunned state, it sounded almost like a ritual. But before you could recover from your daze – the post you were tied to suddenly spun around, knocking the air out of your lungs as you gasped in horror when you faced the cliff edge. The uneasiness in your stomach grows as you stare at your fate.

Will this be the end? Will this really be how I leave this cruel world by being sacrificed to a God I don't believe in?

A sting of pain on your palm managed to bring you back to reality – a warm liquid dripped down from your hand. You could almost whiff the scent of blood through the overpowering combined smell of the earthy soils of the forest nearby and the briny waters of the sea below.

Then, you and your companions hear the sounds of water splashing on the rocks underneath and accompanied by a low roar. Your heart almost jumped out of your chest as you came face-to-face with the humongous anomaly.

"Oh, Colossal Emperor, please accept this humble offering from us, and in exchange, would you be so kind as to ease these rainstorms?"

The creature brought up a clawed limb, tearing through your bindings, before picking you up in its hand and staring at you. The villagers below rejoiced by God's acceptance of their offering; however, they soon realized that the storm wasn't easing away.

Confusion was written on their faces as they watched the Colossal Emperor open its hand and see you stand on its palm with a triumphant smile. Their confusion slowly turns into fear as it lets out a deep growl when it inspects your wounded hand.

You dared lay a finger on her?

It spoke telepathically in their minds. The voice sounded of a male human with a deep and alluring tone. They could also hear the low rumbling noise from its throat as it raises itself more, showing its proper height to the people.

"We've offered you a sacrifice!" A council refuted.

It clicked its tongue. You hurt her.

"It was necessary!"

Was it? It chuckles darkly. How foolish of you to think I control these storms when I simply emerge when it happens? It paused for a second, letting its words sink in. A shame, really. You all could've lived but

Anyone that touches what's mine is punishable… by death.

The rain had ceased, and the sunlight shone brightly through the cracks of the clouds in the sky. There you were in your soaked and mud-covered white dress, standing eerily still at the center of bloodied corpses of the adults and former Council members – except one. You crouched down to Irihata's eye level, his blood-covered body trembled as he stared at (R/N) 's decapitated head at the front of his feet.

"Why?" He asked desperately and almost pathetically in a hoarse tone while looking up at you. You saw the immersed feelings of suffering and anguish in his eyes that were practically eating him alive.

You offer him a kind smile, making him almost forget the whole ordeal. "Because you deserved it, leader."

"For you, death is a mercy you aren't entitled to."

Again, your words echoed in his mind. A forever reminder of his failure to protect his people who were with him as he watched your retreating figure, leaving him there to wallow in his thoughts. You were practically glowing in excitement as you walked back toward your lover at the idea of your new lives together.

He again lowers his palm to the ground, just enough for you to climb onto it. Lifting it up to stare at each other, wordlessly communicating before slowly pushing his torso off the cliff, preparing to take his leave with you.

"Wait!" Irihata yelled, running to the cliff's edge and hoping to catch up on you before you left. But he was too late, both of you – you and the Colossal Emperor vanished with a massive splash before he could even reach the edge.

You two quickly arrived at your stop, just as hasty as you left. Matsukawa settles you down on a beach shore after roughly dragging you underwater. The wet smooth gritty sand beneath you clang onto your bare feet and in its crevasses, making you cringe at the contact before it was washed away by the tide.

"We make a pretty good team, don't we?" You turn to face him, mirroring his twisted grin. "I still can't believe it worked." Although still towering over you like a predator, his current form resembles a human-sized scale and height

This, whichever form he took – either his monster form or his humanoid form, was the man you fell madly in love with and would do anything for him— even dirtying your hands with blood.

"You doubted me?" You gasped dramatically and playfully at his reaction, arching a brow in amusement. He shakes his head while chuckling, making you join him promptly afterward.

"No. Of course not, dear." He starts, "I didn't think it would be this easy. It went just as you told me, step-by-step and bit-by-bit."

The early events were all a part of your plan. It started with a misunderstanding about being exempted from physical labor— you weren't, never was, and never will be. However, you planted a seed of doubt in them by letting them think that you are, and they fell right through your trap. The rest you predicted in due time, planting more lies to grow their hatred and pettiness towards you until it ultimately led to their demise.

Your thoughts are interrupted by his excellent hands cupping your face, making you look up and into his dark-colored eyes— only to be taken aback at the rare display of raw emotions: a mixture of adoration and devotion swelling in his eyes. Unable to look away, you watch him glance between you and your lips.

"May I?" You nodded, and his lips captured yours immediately, making you melt into him. The little, breathy sounds you made were driving him to his limit. He so desperately wants you. Teeth grazing slightly on your bottom lip as he sucks on it, fingers twined into your hair and clenching into a fist, tugging on it slightly and earning an airy gasp from you.

When you part with your lips, Matsukawa instantly shoves his tongue down onto you and expertly explores your mouth for the first time. You pull him closer, removing the little distance between you and him. You found yourself snaking your arms around his neck as his tentacles wrapped around your legs, effectively trapping you.

Matsukawa hurriedly untangles his tentacles around you, lifting you up in his arms with your legs securely hooked around his waist before carrying you over to a rock near the shoreline. He gingerly places you on the rather large flat surface. Goosebumps ghost on your skin upon contact with the rock's cool and smooth texture as he grinds his slightly opened cloaca against your clothed sex.

You whimper into the kiss before pulling away and looking up into his eyes with uncertainty and desire as he peers down at you. "You do not need to worry. Just relax, leave everything to me… Let me take care of you." He says, brushing away a stray strand of hair from your face and pressing soft kisses all over it.

He starts rubbing your shoulders and arms just as you like it, making you relax and sensitive at his touch. You feel an unfamiliar writhing appendage slipped inside your dress, tugging at the collar and revealing your breasts to your lover while another pair grabbed your ankles, spreading your legs more to him. A R C H I P E L A G O x SimspirationBuilds collab (patreon - beachfront tier, early access)

You guys, I am so very excited to share this month's set. SimspirationBuilds & I got together to create a HUGE set to fully customize a build idea that was really inspiring us. The idea is set around a co-working space & café. We wanted to create a super cozy but modern working environment. The 1st floor would be an area to gather, take a coffee break & relax. The second floor is divided in small working areas, with a bigger space for meeting/sales pitch etc. We totally had in mind a place to allow different types of small businesses to work in the best atmosphere possible. Cozy, but work oriented, with all the amenities in one building. The goal is to bring together self-employed people, small businesses & entrepreneurs all under the same roof. Hence, the name archipelago.

For this collab, we both created separate sets that complete each other. To download @simspirationbuilds part of the collab & have access to her content (20 meshes) & build, head over to her tumblr (or instagram or patreon). All the content is, as usual, early access.

Now, regarding my content: I created 26 new meshes (!!), from sofas to desk, to clutter. Adding to these 6 different minimal-type windows, a glass door, a cozy little deco reading nook etc! For the archipelago collab, all the content in my preview pictures is staged for the purpose of showcasing a café/work environment, but I definitely see most of those pieces used in a regular home as well, to create a cozy living area or a home office space.

Im genuinely so confused as to why the new slmccl video (specifically his Dead Space Remake video) is age restricted like. I watched it w my dad and even he was confused.

And i even went and checked 4 other ppl playing dead space, specifically their 1st part, and none of them were age restricted?

I checked Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, MKIceAndFire, and Indeimaus

Markiplier and Jacksepticeye are 2 of the most well known youtubers, and MKIceAndFire has a larger amount of followers (3.33 mil vs 1.84 mil) but they seem to have about the same reach in terms of viewership, at least for their dead space videos.

I’d also like to point out that MKIceAndFire’s Dead Space Remake video showcases the whole game, and was seemingly sent the game early? If I remember correctly, unlike Charlie Slimecicle, both Markiplier and Jacksepticeye have a cloak brand collab with Dead Space Remake.

So afterwards I went to Indeimaus’s video which was released roughly a day or 2 ago as of writing this, so about a week an 1/2 after Charlies video was released, they don’t seem to have any collaboration with the Dead Space Remake or EA or whoever. And yet their video (last time i checked) was also not age restricted.

So. What was so wrong about Charlie’s video that it deserves to be age restricted?

Pls no one ask why i decided to do this im just genuinely befuddled by this and decided to do some (very basic imo) “research” because he even asked on twitter why it was age restricted and youtube™️ said that after looking it over it was going to stay that way and then didnt say why which.

After collaborating twice with SUGA, IU choose V to star with her in the MV for her song “Love wins all”.

More details about the concept were shared in an interview with the MV director (Eng translation, original article). V’s character is partially blind, IU’s character can’t talk, the camcorder shows the filter of love, and the square symbolises discrimination.

IU’s custom wedding dress was designed in the Korean haute couture house Dénicheur (Instagram post), props were provided by The Prop (Instagram post), and they filmed at Freya, an abandoned beach resort in Yangyang (rental website, with pictures).

Byun Baekhyun is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actor. He is a main vocalist in EXO, EXO-CBX, and the leader of South Korean supergroup SuperM. Baekhyun has been labeled as the "Genius Idol," and is regarded as having one of the best vocals in Kpop. His solo songs and individual albums have broken records across the world, and he has also participated in numerous acting projects and variety shows. He keeps fans entertained on his multiple social media platforms, has a very cute corgi, and is one of the only men to look good with a mullet. Please join me in celebrating EXO’s 🐶

This post is part of an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of EXO over the past 10 years and to provide tangible avenues for supporting these artists in 2022 (when they will likely be leaving SM Ent.) and beyond 🖤

Baekhyun began training to be a singer when he was 11 years old, influenced by South Korean singer Rain. In High School he was the lead singer in a band called Honsusangtae (lit. "coma") and won a local music festival. In addition to musical activities, Baekhyun trained as a martial artist in his youth and has a dan 3 black belt in Hapkido.

His first solo song, titled "Beautiful" as the soundtrack for the EXO Next Door, became the first soundtrack single from a web drama to top digital charts. “Dream,” his collab with Miss A’s Suzy, won first place five times on music show programs, sold over 1.3 million copies, and debuted at number one on the Gaon chart. His collab with Soyou entitled “Rain” reached number one on every South Korean online music chart, an achievement known as "all-kill.”

His first solo mini-album, City Lights, sold over 500,000 copies in July 2019, breaking the Gaon Chart record for the highest monthly album sales by a solo artist. The second mini-album, Delight, garnered over 732,000 pre-orders, making it the most pre-ordered album by a soloist in South Korean history. On July 1st, it was announced that the album had sold more than 1,000,000 copies, making it the first solo album in South Korea to do so since Another Days in 2001. In 2021 his self-titled Japanese debut album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. In March that same year he released his third Korean mini-album, Bambi, which replaced Delight as the most pre-ordered album by a solo artist in South Korea at over 833.000 copies. It debuted atop the Gaon Album Chart and is Baekyun's second consecutive Korean-language album to have sold over 1 million copies.

Since May 6, 2021, Baekhyun has been enlisted in South Korea's mandatory military service as a public service worker. His expected discharge date is February 5th, 2023 and we eagerly look forward to both his return and to the amazing creative endeavors that are sure to follow!

Thinking about how the hermits have been slowing down progress lately (despite still making incredible progress) on minecraft, savoring the early game, those first day feels of manual farms and little to no redstone.

Thinking about early hermitcraft, where it evolved into progress on top of progress on top of progress, where it was the norm, if not highly expected, of builds to keep getting bigger by the episode.

Youtube as the medium that it was back then played a huge part on early hermitcraft and how that was just the culture. Daily/consistent episodes and how hermitcraft just had this reputation of making creations to the extremes. Despite being an smp, it was literally just a server of, well, hermits. Far away from each other and barely catching wind of their neighbors because they all needed the space for their gargantuan creations.

The audience plays a big role on the content too. How viewers back then only wanted to watch builds, the flack female gamers got and the creepy shipping from the slightest interactions between genders.

Hermits would ask their audience did you like this build? To which they'd reply, yes! Do more!

Then Hermits would collab and visit other hermits and prank them and it was great for exposure and shows what great friends they are because it was all in the name of fun and having good content, to which some of the audience replied spoilers! How could you! Hate! Envy! Awkward! Cringe! Scripted!

The rise of dream smp and its promotion of rp, community, and collaboration to younger viewers. Dsmp fans expecting none of such when taking a dip into hermitcraft, only to get hit by season 7.

Pearl and Xisuma realizing rp just wasn't their cup of tea, but glad they tried it anyway. Making it clear they won't be diving into it again anytime soon. Their audience supporting the decision.

Thinking about Grian doing third life and a hundred hours and immediately debunking everyone saying it's against the rules. There are no rules. It's his series. He can do whatevere he wants. His need to constantly remind his viewers that everyone is his friend, that no fan of his shall spread negativity to them.

A raise in youtube viewership because of the pandemic, a blessing amidst a tragedy, so many hermits reaching milestones the old youtube would never have given them the chance to get a glimpse of sooner.

A wave of twitch viewers migrating to yt and vice versa. Hermits Helping Hermits.

Hermits having long meetings deciding seeds, which helped them plan better for their episodes, coming out with a survey saying their audience don't care about seeds. The audience cares about hermits, and them as people. And minecraft as a game and an experience and we just miss you. We're waiting for you to come home but we don't want to rush you but we worry as well and we're grateful you even keep us updated with your thoughts and opinions at all.

The way minecraft kept updating bigger and better each season was a huge influence to how hermits play. How their episodes were structured and spaced out. How collabs and sxheduling could work.

So many new viewers never experienced hermitcraft early game grind, bcs it usually doesnt exist. Grian beating the ender dragon 1st episode was an expectation. It could've been any Hermit, really. Maybe even a group whose scheds matched up and with a challenge to boot.

Older viewers miss the early grind. Like the hermits, its so refreshing to witness the game all over again with a twist the updates provide. That feeling of fresh wonder mixed w nostalgia is seratonin inducing.

So there was always something new, and there's always something the same, and i just feel very proud of these content creators, these artists, and the community that built up around such loveable people and their craft.

Hey I love your fics and writing style and well since I've been meaning to start writing fics I wanted to ask you if you have some advice you'd give.

Ohhh advice? Sure, I can do that! I shall bestow all of my knowledge upon you now, but you gotta look below the cut. Shhhh, it's a secret~

Okay really I just knew this was going to be a really long post and didn't want to clog up everyone's dash lol. ONTO WRITING ADVICE

I kind of live by these rules in writing:

1. Know the rules before you break them 2. ANYTHING can be inspiration 3. Remember the doll 4. Use your resources 5. Don’t hold yourself back 6. Practice 7. Enjoy yourself!!

1. Know the rules before you break them

Pay attention in English class (or whichever class for the language you're writing in) and learn the grammar!! I don't always have perfect grammar in my fics and sometimes I consciously choose to ignore grammar rules to make it more impactful, but you HAVE to know the rules before you break them. Study those grammar lessons! Learn how to use the fun punctuation, like semi colons and em dashes and en dashes and all that good stuff. I know they're scary, but they're a lot of fun too.

ALSO PLEASE USE PARAGRAPH BREAKS IM BEGGING that's like, a HUGE problem I see with a lot of new writers. Paragraph breaks are not optional!! Change 'em when the main topic of the paragraph switches or when a new character is speaking. Overdoing it with paragraph breaks is better than underdoing it, I promise.

2. ANYTHING can be inspiration

Have you ever played Story Cubes?

If you haven’t, it’s essentially this game where you roll the cubes, they each land on a different image, and you gotta tell a story that uses all of those pictures. Some are literally just a question mark or a speech bubble and that’s what you have to use. Me and my siblings used to play the game a lot. And you know what? Some of those stories are the most creative ones we’ve ever come up with. When I say anything can be inspiration for a story or a character, I mean ANYTHING!

I based my Donnie design off of the vintage globes and journals I have in my bedroom.

My little sister threw a pillow at me and it inspired a funny scene I wanted to write in another fic

I designed two OCs off of Mars and Pluto and an ENTIRE 40,000 word fanfiction based off of a space documentary I watched

My NaNoWriMo story last year was based off of the concept of shadows and how cool I thought it’d be if they could talk

Me and my friend made an entire dystopian original story commenting on our world today. It was first inspired by a crack self insert Death Note RP we had at 13 years old. Not kidding.

Literally anything can be inspiration. Challenge your mind!! The best ideas come out of completely ordinary and unexpected opportunities, in my experience. You don’t need one of those super detailed and crazy expensive prompt books (though they are fun) to write a great story. Use music, use a color, use the sky, use your favorite food, use anything! Just find inspiration!

3. Remember the Doll

Remember Mulan?

We never got to see the Huns destroy the village and we didn’t get to see them kill anyone there either. But by showing that doll there, the animators took an entire battle full of death and destruction and summed it all up in one, heartbreaking moment. You don’t need to spend ten pages writing about how horrifying the bad guy was and listing everything he did from start to finish, nor do you need to write an analysis on why she’s bad. All you need to do is show one or two very meaningful ways they impacted the world... and you can do that with something as simple as a doll lying on the ground in a burning village.

Because the doll is there; the little girl is not.

There’s a quote that sums this up really well, and I have it written on the dry erase board by my desk.

“You don't write about the horrors of war. No. You write about a kid's burnt socks lying in the road.” - Richard Price

And adding onto that, try to write more about what’s there, not what isn’t. Mulan didn’t say ANYTHING about the girl in that scene, but by showing what was there, it told us a story about what wasn’t. Focus on what is in the scene and it will tell your reader about what isn’t.

I do think writing a balance is good though, so I try and keep it around a 3/1 ratio of what is there vs what isn’t. Remember this is art though, not math; you can change the formula as you please just to make it feel right. It all depends on the scene and what you want.

4. Use Your Resources

You know how, in the artist community, there’s this sort of stigma around using references? And some artists have to make posts reminding others that there’s nothing wrong with using references and you even should use them?

It’s the same concept in writing!

There is NOTHING wrong with looking to other writers’ work or keep a thesaurus constantly open or bookmarking a reference page of other words to use than “said”. Nothing wrong with it at all! When I write, I always have two tabs open: my writing document and thesaurus.com. I have a folder on my computer bookmarks of ways to describe a smile and a body language dictionary. Before I write fanfic, I watch a “best moments of *character*” compilation video on Youtube to remind myself of how they speak. I watch fight scenes from The 100 or Avatar or Marvel while I write my own battles!

There are SO MANY resources out there for you to reference. Use them! And if you need some to start with, shoot me an ask. I have a ton.

5. Don’t Hold Yourself Back

One of the scariest parts of writing is the thought of “what will people think?” Creative writing is EXTREMELY personal, and you’re going to find a lot of you inside your work, including the thoughts you didn’t want anyone to know about.

People will discover how often you think about love. People will discover how dark your mind can get. People will discover the morals you hold that even you didn’t know about. They’ll discover that the person you swore you’ve moved on from is still on your mind. They’ll discover that the pain you swore you got over still hurts you.

This thought scared me a lot, and still does. I’ve let go of and forgotten about so many story ideas because they were just a little too personal. I could write it and not publish it, but what if someone still sees? Writing, like all art, comes right from the heart and reveals a lot about a person. That paranoia of being known kept me from writing so much.

But I promise you, your most powerful stories are going to be the most personal ones.

I wrote Hated Resemblance based on my thoughts about myself, and I wrote Dagger From the Mirror based on thoughts about myself too. A lot of it is dark, most is painful, and all of it is scary to show the world. But I wrote it anyways and it’s created something pretty amazing.

Hell, even now I’m wondering if I should post that lil anecdote, but I think it’s the best way to make this part of my point stronger. See? Writing about things that affect you is the best way to make them impactful, even for something as simple as advice.

And even if you want to write about light and happy stories- you’re still going to have to get personal.

This all got pretty deep but my point is this: Don’t hold yourself back. Write what you feel you need to and it don’t worry about what anyone will think. Don’t hide that one sentence because you’re scared who will read it because you’re scared to be known so deeply. Add it in even when it’s scary.

That’s something I’m still learning how to do, and it’s a slow process that has taken years... but it’s worth it, I promise.

6. Practice

I started writing in 1st grade. I’ve written regularly since then, and this is my word count every month this year:

Most of that is fanfiction. Some are just random thoughts, some are really thought out posts or answers to your questions, and some are made up of original stories. That total words written number is since November.

You don’t have to write this much every month, I promise, I just don’t really have any other hobbies lol. My point is that practice is really really really important. Write a paragraph or even just a sentence every day. You’re gonna improve so quickly, I promise.

“Write every day. Writing is a muscle that gets stronger with use.” - Abbi Glines

But take breaks too!!! Don’t overwork yourself. Burn out is a real thing and you shouldn’t force yourself to write just because you’re scared you don’t write enough! Write at a pace that’s comfortable for you. There will always be writers out there who write more than you and even more writers who write less than you. That’s okay. Everyone has a pace they’re comfortable with, and you just gotta find yours. As long as you’re writing consistently, the numbers don’t matter too much. 50 words a day or 5000 are both good!

7. Enjoy Yourself!!

You’re here to have fun!

No matter what you’re writing (angst, romance, fix-it, AUs, hurt/comfort, fluff, ANYTHING), remember that fic writing is supposed to be fun!! You’re not getting paid to do this. On one hand, that sucks, but on the other hand it gives you the amazing opportunity to write literally whatever you want! Find projects you’re enthusiastic about, meet other writers, do collabs, make playlists for your story, create over powered OCs for the hell of it, ignore plot holes and write without regard to canon, or write the most realistic and in-depth canon-compliant book ever. Create the most self indulgent story you can think of!

Have fun. This is your story and you get to write the rules. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Be proud of yourself. You can get all of the comments and feedback in the world, but if you’re not proud of what you wrote, it’s gonna be hard to look back on it with joy. Be proud no matter how many reads it gets—you made it!
