TW: Self-harm, cyber bullying
On the surface, my boss seems like a really nice and benevolent person. But lately, there have been instances that make me think I'm actually working for a narcissist.
Last year, my coworker got hurt on the job and needed stitches. After that incident happened, I heard some really icky things spoken by my boss anytime my coworker asks for even something minor, "[Coworker] cost me more money than any other employee!" When it was rumored that co-worker might quit; "If [they] do that [they'll] have to return every cent I paid [them]!"
But whenever my boss is in hot water with their superiors, they will ghost everyone for a couple of days and then show up with some story as to why no one could get ahold of them. "I had a heart attack yesterday, but I'm here. I am working!" I believed them at first until they let slip that they say that every time their customers are getting furious with their lack luster customer service; "I just tell them that and they instantly change their tone with me every time because they don't want to appear unsympathetic."
But this last part gets really bad. I had another coworker who was being cyber bullied in the neighborhood Facebook groups. I was never aware of it because I'm not active on Facebook, and I especially avoid those toxic neighborhood groups. People were making posts in these groups specifically to shit talk this coworker. I later found out my boss and other coworkers were aware of it and chose to ignore it. The bullies even went so far as to send them DMs and make fake accounts to harass them. This coworker eventually attempted suicide and I never saw them again. But I recently heard my boss say, "I don't care! [Coworker #2] put ME at a disadvantage trying to off [themselves]! [They] were out of work 2 months, and it really cost me!"
What the fuck? Is that all you can think about is how it disadvantaged you?! You KNEW this shit was going on, since you're in those groups yourself and you chose to let them suffer in silence because it had no personal impact on you until they couldn't take it anymore and chose the nuclear option? But anytime someone calls you out on your bullshit you pull out your ass some lame excuse to explain it all away and earn yourself more brownie points.

A Tumblr Essay in Response to Youtuber Aldone’s Video Essay Titled “Why Elsa IS A Bad Character”
Tumblr media
This is the first time in forever I use anti-tags in this blog, but I have to protect myself. To be fair, this is Tumblr and you have full freedom to block me after reading this post, so bear with me.
And I will close the comment session for this one because I imagine I would be exhausted to deal with it in this particular post. Forgive me for my cowardness.
 Caveat:
Trigger warning: This post has mentioned misogyny, mental illness, and cyberbullying.
I should first explain my relationship with Frozen franchises. When Frozen was out, I was a little 13~14 gremlin. I seldom went to theatre for a movie in my entire life, and I am still the same now. In the 23 years of my life, I have ever gone to a movie theatre three times. Every other movie I watch is from DVD renting stores or Disney Plus. Therefore, when I watched Frozen 1, it was when our music teacher in the high school decided to play the film in the class as Frozen 1 was a musical (so it qualifies as teaching material in a music class I guess).
I am a cis woman who once succumbed to 1990s feminism—I refused to have anything to do with feminine qualities as I’ve never learned make-up and dress-up. So Frozen actually resonated with a part of me that I had never thought existed—I saw the girl who wished to be seen as more powerful and tougher in the characterization of Elsa in Frozen 1. But at the same time, the influence of 1990s feminism in me told me that I should feel ashamed for liking Frozen 1. I refused to tell anyone (including my family) that I love Frozen, except my closest friend in the high school.
Once, I had to confess to my younger sister because she found me drawing Elsa fanart. I confessed: “I love Frozen, yes. Your super masculine-looking sister loves Frozen. Could you let me be and don’t tell my Mom? I can’t deal with how she would think of me if she knows I love Frozen.”
I love Frozen. I love Frozen Fever. Olaf's Frozen Adventure is mostly repetitive for me but I still feel the warmth when the sisters sing “When We’re Together.” I understand there are flaws in these films, but hey, I have a fun time watching those films, and they would be a big part of my teenage years.
But I don’t like Frozen 2. I personally disagree with many of the creative choices in this film, which I don’t think I would go too much into in this post. But just so you know: I am an Asian and I once wrote Frozen fanfiction and did prompts occasionally on the Internet platform in my own country. Once my criticism of Frozen 2 was known by the Frozen fans in the Internet community in my country, I was cyber bullied to the point of depression and despair.
That is my story about my relationship with Frozen franchise. I believe Youtuber Aldone has his story of his…somewhat love-hate relationship with Frozen franchise told again and again in his video. (Yeah today I’m going to express my personal opinions on this video essay)
Aldone, if you are reading this, I would like to say that the purpose of writing this post is not out of mean spirit or hatred against you. It is me doing the thing I am more familiar with—writing, to express my thoughts on your several points in this video. I think we can agree to disagree, it’s the purpose of a conversation even though we have never met. I appreciate your effort to put the original video together, as I understand how much work it takes to make a video because I have edited crappy videos for my school projects before.
But I am here just to provide my opinions, nothing more, nothing less. Perhaps by doing so, I can finally have more peace with a part of me that was once obsessed with this franchise. I could finally be free from the prison of this obsession.
And to anyone who cyberbullies Aldone after reading my post, I just want to say: fuck off from my lawn and you are the worst.
Then shall we begin?
Pardon me for not quoting Aldone’s original video quote-by-quote. I would write this in bullet points, but I would simply the arguments Aldone attempted to make rather than quoting them with composing a Tumblr post purpose
  1. Aldone: “Elsa’s parents are the worst royal parents in Disneyverse, they were portrayed in a positive light, but everything they did as parents were horrible to Elsa. The issue is the film never made it clear that Elsa’s parents were bad parents.”
My counterpoints: The thing with parenting, imo, is you can love your children but still fuck up the parenting. You can love your children but still gaslight them subconsciously so they will learn better, even if you mean no ill will. Their parents’ flaw was that they didn’t know how to confront Elsa’s emotions after the Anna incident. If Frozen 1 tried to flat-out portray Elsa’s parents as characters like Mother Gothel, manipulating Elsa just for their personal gain, then honestly I would be disappointed. It would not necessarily be a bad story, per se, but how I view Elsa’s parents is: they tried their best to protect Elsa, but they messed up.
“Do You Want to Build a Snowman” for me, it’s a heart-wrenching experience as I feel bad for both Anna and Elsa. Parents served as a purpose to fuel Elsa’s fear further, rather than being a pair of good parents.
The thing about this world is that love is not enough for salvation sometimes. And love sometimes is poison. I don’t agree with the view that there’s “fake love/just obsession” and “true love.” Love is a fact, love is an emotion, but love sometimes will not necessarily make you a better person.
But I gotta say, as a fellow who dislikes Frozen 2, I agree it makes no sense in retrospect considering Iduna had some experience with magical spirits so I am mainly talking about Frozen 1 here.
  2. Aldone: “’ For the first time forever’ is good until Hans ruined it because upon re-watching, we know Hans was the true villain. So the contrast between Anna and Elsa in this song is weakened. This song is supposed to be about the hero vs. the villain. (Aldone did not say this in this bracket, but I guess he wanted something like ‘Out There’ in Hunchback of Notre Dame from ‘For the First Time in Forever.’)”
My counterpoints: I am sorry, Aldone. But pardon me for being blunt: I think you grapple with the idea of “Elsa was supposed to be the main villain in the first draft” too much, to the point that you couldn’t see what Frozen is now as an end product on its own.
Yes, I admit it is always interesting and important to understand the creators’ intentions. But sometimes, I would choose to embrace “The Death of the Author” more to free my expectations from those interviews from the creators.
So what’s my point here? My view on “For the First Time Forever” is: This is a song about fear, the very core theme of this film. It is not about good and evil, but it is about how two sisters deal with their fear. Now, you might ask “Well, it is obvious for Elsa, but what do you mean on Anna’s end?” Anna was isolated by her sister without understanding the reasons, her fear was: what if the coronation party couldn’t solve her isolation?
I know it all ends tomorrow
So it has to be today
'Cause for the first time in forever
For the first time in forever
Nothing's in my way! (Anna’s verses from “For The First Time in Forever”)
While I personally don’t agree with the choice to make Hans the twisted villain, I do not agree that Hans ruined the song. The contrast between Anna and Elsa in this song still works even if Hans exists, because, for me, Hans’ problems have nothing to do with the brilliant writing in this song and the reprise.
  3. Aldone: “’ Let It Go’ is bad for character development because it sends a bad message. It looked like woman empowerment but felt flat because when Elsa built the castle, she didn’t face the consequences of her actions.”
My counterpoint: I think a comment under Aldone’s original video said it better than me: “Let It Go” is about Elsa being a hypocrite.
Yes. And I mean it. Elsa was hypocritical in this song. She sang about being free and could use her power in her will, but she chose to close the gate (of the balcony) right in the face of the audience. She was blinded by her desire to be free from her lifelong fear, but she didn’t realize her ice castle was just another prison for herself because her mind was never free from her fear for real. I feel like I am not reading too much in that particular frame of closing the gate right in the audience’s faces??? I just feel like…the metaphor ain’t that subtle???
Well, people always told me that I read too much in everything. I guess that’s how I function as a human being named Levi.
“Let It Go” was unfortunately framed as woman empowerment because of its fame. Let me say this: If you really have ever watched AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” you would understand the scene when Walter White said “I AM NOT IN THE DANGER, SKYLAR—I AM THE DANGER” is one of the most pathetic moments of the character of Walter, rather than how mainstream critics interpreted as “badass.”
Now, you could say “But this song was supposed to be a villain song! They ruined this song by making Elsa not the villain in this film!” Then pardon me for being a broken record: Embrace The Death of the Author. The song was not ruined, the misinterpretation of the mass did.
Finally, I just would like to add something to “she didn’t face the consequences of her actions.” I think: “For the First Time in Forever (Reprise)” is her consequence. You could argue that this consequence was far from enough, therefore, Elsa never learned from her mistake.
I would like to remind you that feeling guilty doesn’t necessarily make a human being a good person. Oppenheimer was crushed by his crippling guilt after WW2, did that make him a good guy?
Elsa felt the guilt, that was her consequence, and yes, she tried to run away from it, but that made her human. The inability to face her fear was her major character flaw.
But dear Aldone, pardon me but: Having character flaws doesn’t make a character badly written.
  4. Aldone: “We don't know what is Elsa thinking that much in the course of the film. (He implied that just seeing how her magic respond to her emotions felt flat in term of characterization) She was too passive in Frozen 1.”
My counterpoint: A character does not necessarily need to be proactive/having their own agency to be compelling. Elsa’s battle in Frozen 1 is her battle within her fragile heart. I understand Elsa felt more like a tragic character belonging to a Greek myth than a main hero/heroine in a Disney film, but to me, personally, that is her charm at least in the first film.
Sorry, this one I only have my own opinions to say rather than delivering anything else more elaborating.
  5. Aldone: “It felt forced that Elsa was brought back to Arendelle rather than realising her mistakes on her own. It’s nonsensical for Elsa to escape the whole kingdom after realising the horror consequence of her actions.”
My counterpoint: She was dealing with trauma just evoked by the confrontation with Anna—She just literally re-created the horror haunted in her imagination after the incident in her childhood, I personally think it’s unfair to expect her to react rationally at this scene.
  6. Aldone: “Hans' existence ruins Elsa's character arc as well because Elsa is now forced into a hero character which she was never meant to be. She has never faced her consequence.”
My counterpoint: I understand where you came from. But I wouldn’t call Elsa a hero/heroine. I would call her an interesting character, as I have no interest in classifying them into heroes or villains.
I would say: blame the masses for misinterpreting “Let It Go.”
I am sorry for sounding so irresponsible of my own claim in this particular session.
  7. Everything in the Frozen 2 session.
My response: I fully agree other than I think Elsa’s character was handled WAY WORSE than her in Frozen 1 personally. But it would require another long post. I have severe PTSD response to watching anything related to Frozen 2 because it evokes memories related to the cyberbullying against me in my country during its release. So no. I do not wish to explain why I personally dislike Frozen 2 on this site at least any time soon. And I do not wish to have anything to do with #BringElsaHome. I dislike it for its plot and character development.
 Please forgive my cowardness.
  8. So Levi, are you saying Frozen 1 is Pogger, and Elsa is a good character?
My answer: Elsa in my opinion, is relatable and compelling, as a woman whose major flaw was her need to escape her fear, but never realized that such desire would worsen her fear. She is by no means a bad person, but neither is she a pure-of-heart innocent cinnamon roll. I love her as what she was in Frozen 1 and her character is one of the most interesting for me in the Disney animation movies. And I am sorry, I tried my best, but I dislike Frozen 2 personally.
Elsa’s story in Frozen 1 was not about her personal growth, but rather about how such a powerful (magically) woman needs something with human warmth in order to have a chance for her salvation.
You might ask: Does such a “terrible(TM)” person like Elsa deserve salvation even to begin with? My response would be: In my opinion, characters respond to the situations around them with their own blind spots and their limited information like each of us is in the real world. Elsa, in my opinion, at least in Frozen 1, had tried her best despite all her faults. And that to me, earned her a shot for salvation, which was Anna.
And I love Anna as a character. But I just love flawed characters more when I consume fictional stories.
I understand why Elsa’s character arc didn’t resonate well with other people, and I respect their opinions, as everyone can have their opinions.
Finally, I just wish to write some words, and immense myself in my own words so I could reflect on myself more. The fact that I love Frozen and I can’t change my own opinions has plagued me for a long while. I know the fault is mine, and I am currently trying my best to improve my self-esteem.
At the end of the day, let me quote this from Breaking Bad to explain the essence of this whole long post:
“I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. And I was really, I was ALIVE.”
 LeviChou out.

IF YOU USE UQUIZ, PLEASE DONT SCROLL <3
Edit: Eh, I’ve realised it’s better to just ignore it at this point
Hey guys, so uquiz is a quiz website and all that jazz. I love taking quizzes under the “new quizzes” tab for fun. But recently, I’ve seen SEVERAL quizzes addressed to “Felix” but I wasn’t sure if it was me. Putting together some information and I do think they actually are meant for me. These quizzes are hateful because I “wrote a paragraph” in a provided textbox because the person who’s quiz I was taking said some racist, fatphobic (i think), and homophobic shit and I’m obviously not okay with that.
I genuinely don’t know what to do in this situation and I’m kind of scared. Anyone have advice? /srs
Under the cut is every quiz about felix I could find.
This above one is from Ren, the other person receiving hate
And below are the two quizzes I took that I believe started the drama.

// long post ahead. less explicit angst than usual but there is cyberbullying + workaholism involved. also Rui being on his gifted kid bs.
Rui lets out an exhausted sigh. After a certain point, everything became a blur. He remembers crying to his brother, remembers breaking down in front of Nene, and beyond that, everything's a blur... entering the hospital, vitals checked, some patronizing remarks, a nurse up his ass for a while...and finally, it was dark outside, and he could be left alone.
His head hurt. His feet hurt. His legs hurt. His stomach hurt. His chest- god, his fucking chest hurt.
He was relatively sure he was administered pain meds that were supposed to kick in soon, but evidently they hadn't yet. So...
He reaches for his phone to pass the time. He toggles on just about every screen filter - this wasn't good for his eyes, he knew, but he was in the hospital with a broken rib, he had worse things to worry about than some blue light.
He opens a social media app he forgot he had, he'd downloaded it only to follow a certain account that posted robotics materials, and never deleted it.
He scrolls.
And scrolls.
And scrolls.
Mind drifting, eyes blurring out, this is just something he's doing with his hands at this point, he's not even retaining let alone looking at anything he sees-
until he happens upon a picture with a familiar face.
[Ah...that girl...]
[...yes, she's one of many that bothers me at school...]
He scrolls past the photo, but he stops.
[... I'm going to be stuck here for at least a week. In that time, my grades... Oh, and we had that big history project coming up...]
He scrolls back up, then clicks on the account. Scrolling through it, various selfies confirm this is in fact the person he thinks it is.
Several moments of hesitation, and he clicks the "message" button.

[xxx]: < if you fuck up that homework though I'm not gonna be pleased >
類: < i anticipate this >
類: < thank you >

Rui does exactly that, closing the app and shutting off his phone...as he tries and fails not to internalize his classmate's unsavory remarks, he lies his head down and lets tears fall once more.

what exactly did frank iero do. other than problematic tweets that he made in like 2009 (over a decade ago). like people intentionally try to engage with him in a way where he gives them ‘sass’ or rubs them and that’s his brand
TW. harassment, suicide, self harm, cyber bullying, death threats
Before I get into it, I'm really glad that someone asked about this because I've been meaning to make a post about it. Thanks for asking about it.
I'd recommend checking out @ patheticjunkievampire on Instagram (and possibly twitter? I'm not completely sure if they've said much about it on there) they mostly talk about that incident when frank made a tweet saying smth along the lines of "is you see any accounts saying that they're me reply with "STRANGER DANGER"".
Tumblr media
The account he was referring to (patheticvampirejunkie) was literally just posting MCR themed photography- they never claimed to be frank and yet he sent his entire fanbase to essentially harass this person (again, all they did was post photography.)
If you go back and check their first post, a lot of the comments are just "STRANGER DANGER". I know that might not seem like a lot rn but it gets worse.
They posted a lot on their story after they finished the set (I'm not sure what the word for that is. The MCR themed photos they did all counted down from 64 (the beginning) to 1 (the end)) they talked about how the MCR fandom and specifically frank Stans have made their mental health significantly worse than it was when they started posting.
They would post screenshots of interactions they've had with Frank Stans and it's sickening. They received death threats, and messages like "you should kill yourself" and ppl would tell them to cut themselves.
Patheticjunkievampire has also stated before that they've struggles with suicide and self harm in the past, so the fact that these hardcore stans used this against them is sick.
A few people reached out to patheticjunkievampire and told them about experiences they've personally had with Frank. This person gave a platform to people who have had bad experiences with him (ik you cant tell whether someone is a dick or not purely based of some people's experiences, but there were a lot and they were all relatively similar. So to me, these stories that people shared seemed extremely possible since the things he did just suddenly seemed like something he would do.)
The frank stans didn't like that this person was giving a chance for people who had bad experiences with him to express their feelings. They received so much hate for simply saying their opinion.
This all took place on Instagram and Twitter. Obviously depending on what platform you use and engage with MCR content, you're gonna be around different people. The ppl on Tumblr seem way more accepting and open to criticism of their fav band, the ppl on twitter and Instagram are way different.
In my opinion it's kinda weird that frank hasn't really said anything about it. He's literally always online, how tf has he not even heard of any of this??
Another thing I just wanna add (doesn't have anything to do with patheticjunkievampire but I still think it's worth adding) frank sold a bunch of his old stuff. Which isn't inherently bad or anything but...
He was advertising a bunch of old clothes and instruments he had during the MCR era, so he was clearly targeting his fans (his young fans). He was advertising extremely old shitty clothes (that you can find way cheaper literally anywhere else) and he sold them for like X4 (at least) of the original prices. He claimed (for the instruments at least) that he wanted to know that they were being played, because he obviously can't play all those instruments at once.
In that case, if the main reason that he was getting rid of all these instruments... Why didn't he just donate them?? Why did he have to heavily advertise his store to his fans and then sell all his old ratty shitty clothes for such a huge profit? Just doesn't seem ethical to me tbh...
TL:DR
My main problem with Frank is that he, not only, picks on people on twitter, but he makes that kind of behaviour acceptable. By not apologizing or taking accountability for these things, he makes this behaviour (harassment, death threats, cyber bullying, telling ppl to kill themselves or hurt themselves) an okay thing to do. His fans are so toxic and will defend him so much to the point where if you literally just say that you don't like him, they will harass and spam you with really triggering things.
I really hope this clears that up. He's definitely done other things but I couldn't remember them- if anyone has anything else to add please do.

Well, I suppose it's time I get this off my chest.
Oshi no Ko started publishing in April of 2020. In May of 2020, a Japanese professional wrestler and actress named Hana Kimura tragically ended her own life. She was forced into treating another actor cruelly on a reality show, which resulted in her being relentlessly cyberbullied until she committed suicide.
Now, what does Hana Kimura have to do with Oshi no Ko?
Well, Episode 6 involves a character named Akane Kurokawa being cyberbullied after being on a reality show, before attempting suicide. Needless to say, Hana Kimura's family wasn't too pleased about this, especially since they were not contacted about the episode.
I need to make it very clear that Hana's mother was not calling for the cancellation of the manga or anime, nor did she blame the author of the manga. From what I've heard, she thinks these issues should be discussed, but treated with sensitivity and respect.
Anyways, fans took this as an excuse to harass Hana's mother. They even went as far as accusing her of wanting the manga to be cancelled and said things to her like "What if the author becomes depressed and kills himself because of you?"
I don't think I should have to explain why saying shit like that to someone who lost their child to suicide is disgusting. Worse yet, there are people calling Hana's mother a Karen for her complaints. It's fucking sickening.
And what makes this even more ironic is that this is what Oshi no Ko is condemning. The show went out of its way to portray cyberbullying as the harmful and terrible thing it is, and fans still went on to cyberbully this grieving mother.
Now, here are my two cents on the topic. I personally think the resemblance to the Hana Kimura situation was a coincidence, as some people have pointed out that the arc may have been planned long before Hana's death. I am willing to give Akasaka the benefit of the doubt and I believe he had good intentions when writing this arc, and that he truly wanted to shine a light on just how awful cyberbullying is.
That being said, we cannot ignore the fact that Hana's mother lost her child only three years ago, and that wound is still fresh. When something that very closely resembles your child's case comes out, it's going to make you upset. And that is something that cannot be glossed over, since these are real people. I also believe the producers of the show should have contacted her beforehand about the episode.
The only people truly in the wrong here are the scumbags who harassed Hana's mother. To them, I have this to say: fuck you. You are no fan of Oshi no Ko if you watched that episode and still decided to harass a bereaved mother airing out her grievances online.
Anyway, that's it for now. See you guys later.

The older generations need to lay off our current school aged kiddos by saying how hard it was in the past compared to now.
I work in education, so I get to see what our youth have to face in their daily lives. One of my students (I’ll call them L to protect their privacy) came to me during an after school activity that I run about some issues they’re having with a friend or maybe former friend now. I was just trying to be someone for them to vent to because I know they’re currently going thru a lot in their home life. During this interaction, they were ranting about how they’re dealing with their queer identity and how a friend was calling them and some other kids bitches and how they’ll end up on the streets. I asked to see the texts, and I saw red when reading the little bit that I did. Everything was over text. I immediately reported it to the school social worker because that’s who the student wanted to talk to and did my best to diffuse the other students who overheard my conversation with L. I could tell that L was broken and confused about the texts because to them, this is all out of the blue. I also strongly encouraged them to block the number but to keep the messages as evidence for when they talk to the social worker.
Point is, these kids have it way harder than when I was growing up. Yeah, I got bullied relentlessly, and I shared my experiences with L in hopes they feel less alone, and told L that parts of middle school suck but that they’ll get through it and I would be there for as long as I could. With texting and social media, these kids are bigger targets than those of us who grew up before or as it was coming out.
If you’re a parent, make sure that your kid knows they can go to you if they’re being harassed or being made to feel uncomfortable from their peers. Have those honest conversations, but don’t invade their privacy. Hell, simply by being that safe adult today, L trusted me enough to look at their phone a couple times to process what I was reading, and hopefully I got the ball rolling to stop this before it goes too far.
Teachers, don’t be afraid to be just a little bit vulnerable to your students. Share tiny bits of yourself here and there. Make those connections so that when a kid is going through a hard time, they’re comfortable enough to go to you.

Chapter 12 - "I've Seen Footage"
Rays of light from the morning sun beam into the gardening shed, in which two young animals lie.
One of them, Pina, sleeps peacefully after the long night he enjoyed before. At some point in his sleep, he unconsciously shifted even closer into his partner’s embrace, and now, he lies atop Bill with his head on the tiger’s firm yet simultaneously soft chest.
Bill, on the other hand, is in a rather unfortunate position – not only is he positioned in just the right place for the sun to shine directly into his eyeballs, but his legs are numb and there’s an immobile sheep parked right on top of him. All attempts to sneak out of Pina’s clutches have been met with unconscious grumbles and a tighter hold, so the poor tiger accepts his fate for now.
At least it’s somewhat comfortable being held by someone who has real feelings for him, carnivorous nature and all.
Suddenly, a flowery chime rings out from Bill’s phone, which is still in the pocket of the pants he tossed aside last night. Despite the fact that he sets his own alarm, and it’s his own fault it’s ringing on the morning of a day off, Bill lets out a quiet, relieved sigh. He can get up, placate his captor with some whispering and forehead kisses, shut off the alarm, and let his legs wake up, all before slipping right back into bed for more cuddles.
However, that plan tosses itself out as soon as Pina’s eyes crack open. “Billlyyyyy…” With bleary eyes, he looks up at the feline’s chin. “Why’sa alarm goin’ off…?”

I think Kingdom Hearts fandom is going through a “renaissance” into bad behaviors I haven’t seen in a while.
Kingdom Hearts shipping toxicity usually increases the longer we lack canon content. That’s not entirely unique to KH. Fandoms tend to spin their gears during downtime between installments, and a lot of that gear-spinning is shipping. But. Like. Kingdom Hearts shipping is so toxic, I’m slipping under.
I put this under a read more for length. And also a sprinkle of vent. Ship names are censored to keep this out of their tags.
Prologue
This is not meant to bash on any ship. It is simply chronicling what I saw in the past and now, and drawing a line between them.
Regarding S0wwiku and S0k@i- I’m not trying to bash S0wwiku as a concept. It actually makes more sense to me than S0k@i, which smacks of someone behind the scenes forcing the characters together. I might even ship Sowwiku openly, if not for the bad behavior outlined here.
Regarding akuw0ku- That ship is my nOTP for reasons that will become apparent in this rant. If you ship it, I mean no ill-will towards you. But I personally can’t stomach it.
A Brief Prehistory
To understand what I’m seeing, we need to explore how we got there. The real birth of the mega-toxic shipping culture was back around Kingdom Hearts 2. There was a fandom around the original game and COM era, but from what I’ve seen, it wasn’t as noxious as it was today with the shipping. I’ve seen S0ka! and S0wwiku (which is my new censored spelling you’ve gotta deal with). But not much else.
The reason is simple and clean- there wasn’t much else to talk about. The game only added four original characters (Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Ansem SOD, the last of whom was ignored when Riku wasn’t in the room). The introduction of the original Organization XIII was the spark for the toxic fandom of the mid-to-late 2000s.
I’m not 100% sure on the history for the CoM era, but it wasn’t long. There were only about 1-2 years (depending on your country) between CoM and KHII. That’s just enough time to get bored with speculating on the purpose of the Organization before you’re introduced to the whole boy band.
There were four years between KHII and 358/2 Days. Four years. Of basically nothing (remasters don’t count, and Coded was Japan-exclusive at the time). Armed with tons of pretty guys and free time, the bad seeds were able to sprout.
Ship wars. Character bashing. Creepy behaviors.
The Living Nightmare
I once knew this girl in real life who shipped akuw0ku religiously. Once, I went to a cosplay party dressed (sort of) as Roxas. She was there with a roll of duct tape. She chased me and tried to tie me up with duct-tape (she didn’t). But the thing that sticks the most with me is she didn’t call me by name while she did this.
She called me Roxas.
Most people were not as loose with their behavior in real life as her. But they were all over Internet spaces. Where- unrestrained by real life- they spit out the most toxic garbage you’ve ever seen. Age might have been a factor in this era. A lot of what went down could only be accomplished by bored teenagers. But the absolute deluge of horror was something I haven’t seen before or since.
The ship bashing and the insistence on pairings being canon was at an all-time high. “Evidence” was often based on purposefully mistranslated or false info. I believe the lie that Nomura insisted there were no romantic pairings in the series was created as an attempt at damage control. But there was just no stopping it.
“Consoled” by the “evidence”, people felt free to write OOC garbage using the seme/uke dynamic. Once the seme and uke positions were set, the characters could not leave them. Any person who attempted to criticize any of this was dogpiled. If they were targeting a gay ship- and they often were- they were instantly labeled as homophobic regardless of explanation.
Some people were. Make no mistake. But a lot of people weren’t. Some people (i.e.- me) were new to fandom and didn’t understand slash shipping as a concept. I said things that probably were homophobic without understanding (I was 14-ish). I probably shouldn’t have said those things. But every conversation eventually became a fight for my life. After a single rebuttal, I was always personally attacked. No-one noticed I was a fresh fish in the pond. No-one tried to explain to me.
“Don’t like don’t look” wasn’t used as good fandom advice or for safety. It was used as a weapon. This is why it took my years to accept it as valid advice.
The female characters got a lot less “love” than their male counterparts. When Xion was revealed, fans attacked her for the crimes of being a woman and “cockblocking” akuw0ku. All they had at the time was a picture and a name. Kairi faced such terrible abuse that there was legitimately a fic called “The Horrible Bloody Death of Kairi”, where Sora and Riku actually kill her.
The reason was all down to shipping. Kairi/Xion existed to threaten or “de-canonize” the gay ships. So it was best if they didn’t exist at all.
I know Kairi- amongst most of the female cast- is poorly written. But the animal behavior of these people was still excessive. It wasn’t merely disliking a character. It was wanting them to suffer to the point of obsession. Never mind how their fans might feel about this behavior. I wonder if anyone who liked Kairi read or was messaged that wretched fic...
Shippers of this type were- in some places- a very vocal minority. But they ruled the roost. The rules were simple. The ship was law. What ship didn’t matter- it depended on what corner of the Internet you were in. The roles were set. The puppets played their parts. Move the puppets, object to the group, and you were incinerated like Vexen.
A Brief Dark Age
This nonsense continued through 358/2 Days up until around Dream Drop Distance. In 2012, it petered out. But from KHII to 3D, we got three games. 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, and 3D itself. But no properly numbered titles. No major releases.
358/2 Days/BBS was just enough of a drip-feed to keep the fandom beast alive, without really progressing Sora’s story. Terra and Ventus formed a new couple, but Aqua wasn’t as poorly treated as Kairi/Xion. People were maturing. Nature was healing. Once Sora’s story creaked forward with 3D, it came with tons of new lore to talk about. To obsess over. To focus on.
Something outside of shipping.
And then the dark age came. Not counting Re:Coded, we didn’t get a new game until 2019. I haven’t really monitored the fandom during this time. But they seemed to grow up a bit. With Kingdom Hearts 3, new ships- like Axel and Isa- rose up. But they never became cults. Seme/uke roles were lessened. Not gone, if they already existed. But definitely weaker.
We might be able to move on. Or so it seemed.
And Yet You Understand Nothing
We are in a new dark age. Sora’s story hasn’t progressed since 2019. We’ve gotten prequel upon mobile game. But time has yet to move forward. The last time I saw people get super excited was with the end of Union X. Dark Road also brought some chatter. But since Dark Road ended, we’ve just been waiting for KH4. It has no release date- just windows that will be moved several time. You know the game.
In the void, there’s nothing to talk about. Nothing but the old fallback. Nothing but shipping.
I’ve seen a return of the canon-grubbing cult. With nothing else to talk about but old content and shipping, it was only natural. Especially regarding S0wwiku.
Sora’s tag is about 95% S0wwiku right now. People in that tag want it canon so damn bad that they draw false conclusions, and bash female characters or rob them of their accomplishments. It’s the old game in a new era.
Some people- from what I understand- place their own experiences onto the characters. Which is fine. Okay. I get that. But the drive to be canon- to be right- is coming back in full force. I fear we could go back.
Ship wars. Character bashing. Creepy behaviors.
We can pretend we grew up, but these elements never really left us. In the void without new content, desperate for something to do, we cling to darkness. And darkness is the heart’s true essence...
Kingdom Hearts is Light- Advice for New Fans
I want to end this ramble with things I wish someone would have told me. If the evil really isn’t defeated, people will jump in blind. I want them to have a better, safer fandom experience than I did.
Gay ships are okay. They are someone else’s interpretation of the characters. They are allowed to have that opinion. You are not homophobic/a monster for not liking the ship, or having a different opinion.
If you don’t like something, don’t look at it. That’s not an attack. That’s for your safety. Click the back button. Close the tab. Block the person.
Your hatred of a ship or type of content will not make it disappear. Your comment will never make content you don’t like get deleted. Attacking the author of a fic with a pairing you hate will do nothing but hurt someone’s feelings.
Blocking is not cowardly. The block function exists to protect you. If a conversation is going south, or morphs into a personal attack, block them.
If you have a ship you really like, it doesn’t have to be “canon” or “right”. If the ship-cult is trying to insist that it is, be wary (they could be exaggerating in light-hearted fun). If they attack people with other opinions, cut ties or block.
A ship is not more important than other people’s feelings. Don’t attack people who ship something you don’t like. Don’t retaliate when people tell you to ship something you hate. Block them. On sight.
If you don’t like a character, think of their fans. There is a way to say you don’t like a character other than writing fics of that character being brutally murdered.
On Tumblr, keep character or ship rebuttals out of their tag. Censor ship names or character names. This isn’t an “unalive” situation where using the full word is important.
Never, ever, ever bring the conversation out of the fandom and into personal attacks. For example, if someone says “I don’t like this ship”, your response shouldn’t be “kill yourself” or “you’re a bad person”. Your response should be ignoring them (if they are non-aggressive) or blocking them (if they are).
I’m going to make this section its own post, because I feel like it’s so important. We always believe that fans are seasoned veterans. We never account for people who just left the islands and are starting their adventure. It would be wrong to post this without addressing the facet of this issue that led it to scar me.
